T

HE DOWNHILL IS THE FUN PART. First, you have to pedal your mountain bike to the apex of that favorite trail of yours. Look out over the distant horizon, take in the epic grandeur and thank the chaparralcovered mountain Gods for placing you on the seat of a mountain bike. With the ability to pump those legs through some difficult, narrow, rocky single track-trail, you have to be grateful to be a mountain biker in Ventura County.

N

ow before donning your bike helmet, keep in mind that you’re not the only one on the trail. Besides other mountain bikers, horseback riders, hikers and trail runners also relish Ventura County’s dirt roads and single-track routes, so let’s be considerate so everyone can enjoy.

East Frazier Mountain Road Even though you’ll be biking to an elevation of 7,800 feet, East Frazier Mountain Road may be one of the cooler places to ride this summer. Staying cool beneath the shady canopy of Jeffrey Pines is one thing, but enjoy even cooler views of Ventura’s backcountry from this lofty perch. This out-and-back moderate route is 10.4 miles round trip and begins at 7,500 feet, so there’s only 300 feet of elevation gain. Directions: From Highway 126, head east, then north on Interstate 5. Take the Frazier Mountain Road exit and west. Follow it to East Frazier Mountain Road. Los Padres National Forest Ojai Ranger District, 646-4348.

Gridley/Pratt/Cozy Dell Loop Trail This Ojai lung buster, 22.8-mile round-trip ride will test your mountain biking mettle. With over 5,000 feet of total elevation gain, the first 11 miles of this loop ride will put your strength and stamina through their paces. The reward is arguably the best views in Ventura County, with the Channel Islands to the west/southwest and the Los Padres National Forest looming to the east and north. After a deep breath, the descent is challenging and will keep you on your toes all the way back to the trailhead. Directions: From Highway 33, turn left onto Gridley Road and follow it until it dead ends. The trailhead is on the left. =

Several new courses have been built recently, such as Rustic Canyon near Moorpark, which has won awards from golf magazines. Others have been redesigned, including the historic course at the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa, and Ventura’s Olivas Park Golf Links. Playing at Olivas is nothing like the 1980s, when my mom and I would be the first golfers on the tee before dawn so we could complete nine holes before my seventh grade classes started. Now, it’s a completely rebuilt links-style course inspired by traditional coastal layouts in Scotland. These days, it’s a bit like taking a quick trip to the birthplace of the sport. Instead of requiring numerous shots above and around water hazards, the new course rewards players who can hit straight shots that avoid thick and difficult seaside grasses, where it can be hard to even find your ball when you’re unfortunate enough to land in it. Oxnard’s River Ridge Golf Club features two challenging

courses. Officials there are trying something completely new to get people excited about golf, people who may never have considered playing the traditional way. It’s called FootGolf. It was invented in Holland a few years ago, and Oxnard has the first course built in California. It’s played with similar rules, but with a soccer ball and holes that are 21 inches in diameter. Four holes on the older course will be used for FootGolf, starting on weekday afternoons, to see if it takes off. River Ridge General Manager Otto Kanny says FootGolf holes are laid across the fairways and rough, but have different greens. “What really comes into play are the undulations in the fairway and the slopes. Because if you’re going uphill with a soccer ball and don’t get it to the top of the hill, it will come all the way back,” says Kanny. “It takes advantage of the natural hazards we have on the course, including trees and shrubs that you have to navigate around.” FootGolf costs $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Kanny hopes it will attract people who would never consider more Continued on page 20

expensive traditional golf, since so many people love to watch soccer, or played it when they were young. Ventura Disc Golf Club Chairperson Erich Schaffer has watched that unique form of the sport grow in popularity. He organizes the annual Coyote Classic tournament at the Coyote Point course at Lake Casitas. Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc, or Frisbee®, according the Professional Disc Golf Assocation. Schaffer says it’s a wonderful place to experience nature and wildlife and breathe fresh air. “I think we’re fortunate that we have one of the more beautiful courses. underwater universe An expedition for adventurous SCUBA divers by alex wilson SCUBA diving provides a fantastic view into an exotic world off Ventura County’s coastline, making it a great place to learn the exciting sport. The ocean surrounding Channel Islands National Park attracts enthusiasts from across the globe. Dive Officer Kelly Moore says they’re drawn to abundant wildlife, swaying kelp and historic shipwrecks.

88

22 — Ventura County Summer Guide — 2013

“It’s really surprising the light penetration that comes down through the kelp. It’s quite a 3-D experience because you have the flowing water and the color and the light.” — Yvonne Menard, Chief of Interpretation of Channel Islands National Park “To many divers, the kelp forest at the Channel Islands is their very favorite spot in the world. These islands are situated in a very unique area that experiences both warm and cold water currents. This mixing creates a very diverse and productive ecosystem, and in fact the kelp forest provides food, shelter and protection from predators for nearly 1,000 different marine organisms,” says Moore. “That is what’s really so special and unique about this area, is the incredible amount of diversity and productivity,” she adds. Bright orange garibaldi is one of the most beautiful fish species to encounter, and the juveniles have iridescent blue spots. The aggressive fish seem to have no fear of divers and are designated as the California state marine fish. Another thrill is swimming with marine mammals like see sea lions, and realizing how graceful they are underwater, as they swirl and turn in search of prey. Starfish and sea anemones also add vivid color to the underwater environment. Chief of Interpretation Yvonne Menard says diving among kelp is a different experience compared to coral reefs in tropical climates. “It’s really surprising the light penetration that comes down through the kelp. The kelp has that incredible amber color, the flowing fronds of the blades of the kelp that are supported by the little air bladders. It’s quite a 3-D experience because you have the flowing water and the color and the light,” says Menard. “It’s often described as cathedrals of light. It’s an impressive experience. Many divers like to get down below and turn upside down, and just look up and see fish swimming through.” Menard says people can get a quick taste of the underwater world 24 — Ventura County Summer Guide — 2013

through the park’s Internet website, by gazing from a webcam near Anacapa Island or watching rangers interact in real time with ocean critters through their Live Dive Program. Anyone in reasonable physical condition can try SCUBA diving, and almost everyone has a fantastic time. Moore says staying safe should be a priority. “There’s definitely risk involved. You are subjecting yourself to pressure situations and environmental hazards. There are lots of different things that divers need to be aware of. You should always dive with a buddy. You should always have safety precautions in order. Wildlife is a concern, but I wouldn’t say it’s one of the top hazards to consider,” says Moore. Ventura and Channel Islands Harbors are home to several SCUBA businesses. Ventura Dive & Sport has been operating for about 25 years, and its instructors have certified divers from 10 years old well into their 70s. Ventura Dive and Sport President Jim Smith makes learning fun while also emphasizing safety. The full-service shop is convenient because it has a classroom and swimming pool for students taking their first breaths of compressed air underwater. Smith operates a fast boat called the Raptor, designed specifically with divers in mind that makes quick day trips to the best local dive spots. He also leads international trips to places like Fiji and Bali in the South Pacific, and Caribbean destinations like Bonaire and the Cayman Islands. “Little Cayman is family-friendly. It’s a great value with awesome diving,” says Smith. “That’s one of our main trips that we like to recommend for people just getting started with their international travel.” 
