entura County is such an idyllic location to spend the summer that it’s easy to let it slide right past lounging on the beach or sipping tropical cocktails decorated with colorful umbrellas. But too much relaxation might mean missing out on some of the fantastic summertime events involving adventure, excitement and education. From up-close looks at soaring hot air balloons and ocean wildlife, to performances by talented musicians, summertime activities in Ventura County offer diversions of all kinds.
10 — Ventura County Summer Guide — 2012
Local brew and wine on Lake Casitas More and more wine is being made right here in Ventura County, and the Ojai Wine Festival provides a showcase for both local vintners and others from farther afield. It’s held along the beautiful shore of Lake Casitas and offers music and other entertainment as well as fine wine. More than 60 wineries are represented. There are also beer tastings from more than a dozen breweries. Free boat rides on the lake are another relaxing aspect of the day. It’s planned for Sunday, June 10. Visit www. ojaiwinefestival.com.
nity to learn about Reagan’s friendship with Walt Disney. The official Disney Fan Club presents an exhibition of more than 500 iconic props, costumes and artifacts from the Walt Disney Archives collected over nine decades. Reagan was a cohost for television coverage of the 1955 opening of Disneyland, and after leaving office, officiated over its 35th anniversary, declaring it “One of America’s national treasures.” The exhibition called D23 Presents Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives opens on July 6 and runs through next April. Motorsports and rodeo are also featured there. This year marks the debut of the new 38,000-square-foot Judge William P. Clark Livestock Center, replacing animal pens that were about 75 years old. The open-air building will benefit visitors, exhibitors and the animals. The Ventura County Fair is set to run Aug. 1 through 12. Visit www.venturacountyfair.org.
Up in the sky An air show at Camarillo’s airport, and special events at Santa Paula’s offer entertainment and aeronautical history. The Aviation Museum at the Santa Paula Airport is open on the first Sunday of each month. Hangars showcase historic and experimental airplanes that take people back to the early days of flight. There are also antique cars and motorcycles on display. Another exciting aviation event will take flight on Aug. 18 and 19, the Wings Over Camarillo air show. A highlight this year will be the reunion of a legendary unit of airplanes called the Checkertails that dominated the Mediterranean theater of combat during World War II. For the love of music The rare two-story Monterey-style adobe built by Don Raymundo Olivas back in the 1840s is one of Ventura’s most historically significant buildings, and the large interior courtyard was known as the site of huge gatherings before California was even part of the United States. The festive spirit lives on during the popular Music Under the Stars series held each summer. There’s a feeling of magic in the air as music lovers listen and dance to a variety of genres under the shining moon and swaying trees with the adobe as a backdrop. Many people bring picnic dinners, or a delicious catered hot buffet can be ordered in advance. Some acts this year include Latin jazz with the Estrada Brothers on Aug. 18 and the always-popular zydeco performer Lisa Hailey on Sept. 8. The concerts are on

The Water Adventure at Lake Casitas is a great place to cool off on a hot day, especially since swimming in the lake is not allowed. There’s a colorful water playground with squirting fountains for young kids. An impressive lazy river feature is fun and relaxing for adults as

Fair food and fun Summer’s biggest event includes something for everyone, from thrill rides and art exhibits to concerts by famous performers. Rockers Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Brett Michaels of Poison fame, and country star Martina McBride are among the performers who will grace the Grandstand Arena.
