here ain’t no party like a cocktail party, and the party rocks even harder when a mixologist is on board. Step into a dimly lit bar where the mood is set by the cool young folk dressed to the nines in designer outfits just as much as by the cocktail in each of their hands, and you may stick around for a bit. Luckily enough, Ventura County has had its fair share of mixologists taking up residence, buckling down for some serious crafting as of late. There’s no need to travel to L.A. for your fix.

Mixology, for all of the air of pomp and importance surrounding it, is simply the art of creating a cocktail out of the best and freshest ingredients. When a bartender claims to be a mixologist you should expect an experience higher in quality than your standard well fare. In no particular order, these are a few of the go-to spots for a mixologist-certified cocktail in Ventura County.

Saloon BBQ, born from the mixologist haven The Tavern, has made quite the name for itself in downtown Ventura. Its stylish, moody, country-inspired interior is the perfect setting for a night out, and if you’re looking for a cocktail, Saloon BBQ isn’t messing around. For a fashion-forward taste sensation, order a beer-infused cocktail, a unique way in which to combine the best of both worlds — beer and liquor. Think Miley Cyrus without the wrecking ball. The Mexican Chocolate is a brilliant combo of tequila, strawberries and a pink peppercorn-infused syrup with Samuel Smith’s Chocolate Stout. While the new-school mixologists will say that bigger is better, nothing beats a classic cocktail expertly made. For relaxing times, make it a Lure Fishouse cocktail. Known for the catch of local ingredients and fish, Lure doesn’t pop out as a cocktail destination, but it should. Public School 805’s The Shrub 2 oz Templeton Rye ¾ oz Pear Shrub (see below) ½ oz Grapefruit juice ½ oz Lemon juice Top off with Peach Lambic

The Official Sazerac Cocktail 1 cube sugar 1½ ounces (35ml) Sazerac Rye Whiskey or Buffalo Trace Bourbon ¼ ounce Herbsaint 3 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters Lemon peel

Combine all ingredients in shaker with ice. Shake and strain into Martini glass. Pear Shrub Recipe 9 cups chopped pear 4 ½ cups sugar 3 cups apple cider vinegar 1 ½ cups chopped thyme 6 cups water Reduce apple cider vinegar in a large sauce pan for five minutes. Add water and thyme and stir in half of the sugar, let simmer for eight minutes and add chopped pear. Once the pear starts to soften, add the rest of the sugar and simmer for five minutes. Remove from heat after pears start to break down and blend with immersion blender.

Pack an Old-Fashioned glass with ice. In a second Old-Fashioned glass place the sugar cube and add the Peychaud’s Bitters to it, then crush the sugar cube. Add the Sazerac Rye Whiskey or Buffalo Trace Bourbon to the second glass containing the Peychaud’s Bitters and sugar. Empty the ice from the first glass and coat the glass with the Herbsaint, then discard the remaining Herbsaint.

eer has enjoyed a renaissance over the last decade, with microbreweries popping up like mushrooms from the Ojai Valley to Agoura Hills. The food that accompanies these ales, lagers and stouts is anything but typical: restaurateurs are pairing their high-end, handcrafted brews with innovative menus, taking the usual burgers, fries and nachos in a more gourmet direction.

“I think pub food has taken a dramatic change from when it first came out,” said Jorge Alem, co-owner of Ojai Beverage Co. “Pub fare was mainly fish and chips, small bites and sliders. onsumers today are not just interested in how their food tastes, they are also concerned with what they are eating and where their food comes from. We seem to have entered into a new era, where kale has become the new romaine, chia and hemp seeds get top billing over sunflower seeds, and almond milk is favored over soy. Even some popular coffee shop chains are now offering almond milk as another option. Whether consumers are purchasing products from local grocery stores, eating at neighborhood cafes or fine dining establishments, food trends are changing on all fronts. According to the National Restaurant Association, “True trends — as opposed to temporary fads — show the evolution of the wiser shift of our modern society over time, and focus on the provenance of various food and beverage items, unique aspects of how they are prepared and presented, as well as the dietary profiles of those meals.” Toward the end of 2013, the association conducted a survey of nearly 1,300 professional chefs and members of the American Culinary Federation, looking at the up-coming food trends for 2014. With this new cleaner-eating emphasis, new nut and seed companies are popping up everywhere, and it is not uncommon to see supermarket chains offer all kinds of nuts, dried fruits and seeds. Where one used to have to seek out specialized health food markets to purchase things like hemp and chia seeds, now they are easily acquired at big food markets. With rising concerns about increased obesity and the effects of consuming GMO products, food and drink companies have been shifting their approach and offering healthier options. Raw green juices and smoothies are listed high on the food and drink trend scale, and juice bars are popping up everywhere. The Chinese refer to kombucha as “the immortal health elixir,” and it has a list of preventative health benefits. Made from sweetened tea that’s been fermented by a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast, this drink is now being offered in popular supermarket chains. For the ambitious, it can also be fermented right in your own home. Increased health awareness has created a shift in the types of foods and drinks that are being consumed. While these trends continue to expand, remember that a calorie is still a calorie; a gluten-free donut is still sugar-laden. It seems, however, that we are tipping the scale in the right direction. dg

Moorpark just woke up from a deep slumber with a face-melting guitar riff known as Rock and Roll Pizza. I walked into the restaurant and immediately thought, “Where the heck am I?” This feels like a rock venue on the Sunset Strip and has enough memorabilia to be an extension of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. By the end of the night, I was already making plans with friends to return and catch some live music and eat another four pizzas. Do yourselves a favor. Get out that old leather jacket you’ve been hiding in the closet; you know the one I’m talking about. Dust it off, and grab a real NY pie and open your ears to the familiar sounds of the Ramones because Moorpark just got a much -needed dose of Rock and Roll. -Ron Russ VC Reporter
