CHRISTOPHER ZSARNY / Z STUDIOS

EDITOR’S NOTE

LESSONS FROM THE DEEP END

I

T STARTED WITH A LITTLE RED BOOK. Back in October of 2014, Ojai Studio Artists (OSA) published the book to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its annual art tour. As you’d expect, it’s loaded with page after page of fabulous local artists. One in particular grabbed my attention: Douglas Lochner (cover + page 39), a minimalist sculptor who strives to “create art that touches people on a primal level.” I’m a big fan of the primal level and try to spend a lot of time there. But what really drew me in was Lochner’s former career path. In 2001 he started a company called Flexible Energy®, which was something of a proactive retort to the inefficiency of our energy structure. Designing ultra-efficient distributed energy solutions led Lochner into the world of fine art, and in 2007 he left the commercial sector. In the early stages of this issue, I was taken with the idea of minimalism and the art of efficiency — the streamlined speed and accuracy of a hummingbird as opposed to a lumbering bear. But the connection between energy efficiency and minimalist art fell to the wayside as Lochner’s volcanic intellect erupted with other compelling angles. Ryan Smith’s interview came in with an extra ton or so of prime meat, which, unfortunately, had to be trimmed due to space limitations. Suffice it to say that novels could be written on many of the thought-provoking tangents their conversation took. To be sure, Lochner operates on a higher intellectual frequency than most. Anyway, I bookmarked his page and aimed for a run in this August 2015 issue. A few seasons later, while poking around my desk, my 7-year-old daughter noticed a photo of Rejoice, a Lochner sculpture depicting a trio of abstract dancers, and confirmed what I already knew.

6

AUGUST 2015

“It’s a really cool sculpture,” she said with big-girl certainty. “Yeah, it looks great,” I replied. “And just imagine, those stainless steel dancers are even taller than you are.” She rolled her eyes. “Dad, I don’t have to imagine. I know. I see it every week.” Turns out she’s been taking swim lessons in Lochner’s pool, dog paddling at the foot of that very sculpture. He’s more than a hyper-intelligent artist, you see. He’s the grandfather of one of my kids’ classmates. I share this story to illustrate the close-knit community we live in. This is a place where the concept of six degrees of separation is frequently split in half. It’s a small town wrapped in a medium-sized county, a patchwork quilt of interconnected yet distinct communities. And after nearly a decade of publication, Ventana has become one of the myriad threads that combine to create our local fiber. My little swimmer is an artistic type. Her little brother is a Lego fiend (and part-time Jedi). They both make some pretty wonderful creations. And who knows, with time and practice, they just may develop their creative skills into a profession. But as figurative painter Michael Pearce (page 11) indicates, there exists a great chasm between creative types and artists. Pearce is a true artist, no question about that, and he’s on something of a mission to reestablish “skill-based art” as the apex of the art world. Writer Mark Storer went deep into the layers for this article. I’m not sure how many “research” meetings at the pub it required, how many “interviews” went down over who knows how many pints. But it worked. And with the bottom of the page gaining on me and a mid-summer sun whispering temptations in my ear, it’s high time for me to follow his lead. – Matt Katz mattk@ventanamonthly.com

THE ARTS

in defense of

KITSCH Figurative painter Michael Pearce and the reemergence of skill-based art. BY MARK STORER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL MOORE

f TOP: Artist Michael Pearce in his studio on the CLU campus, Thousand Oaks. ABOVE: Tools of the trade. Pearce staples canvases to the wall and uses a level to help lay out a painting’s composition. The spring-topped can is a brush washer, the artistic equivalent of an archer’s arrow sharpener.

or a man who teaches art, Michael Pearce didn’t have a lot of patience for art school when he was younger. Disillusioned as a student in his native England in the 1980s by what he saw as a preoccupation with abstract art, Pearce set out to become a life painter. But he had to do so largely on his own. “The classes I was taking were more about making sculptures out of piles of shoes and how to make pieces of string into a net, and I didn’t care at all,” Pearce said. “When I went on to do a bachelor’s degree and I looked around the studios, that’s what they were doing. It had nothing to do with technique, nothing to do with skill.” Pearce felt that art was dead. }}

AUGUST 2015

ABOVE: Pearce works on several canvases at once, stapling them in a row so he can move easily from painting to painting. Here, he continues fine-tuning Emerge. INSET: Emerge, 2015 (unfinished), 36”x66”, oil on canvas.

Over chicken curry and pints of ale, Pearce discussed the long road that led to a studio on the campus of California Lutheran University where he teaches in the atelier system—the classroom is the artist’s studio where he produces his paintings, and his teaching is an extension of that. A professor of art and organizer of The Representational Art Conference (TRAC), a prolific painter and author of a book called “Art in the Age of Emergence,” Pearce wound through a few happy accidents before emigrating to the U.S., found his calling as an artist, and began teaching. It was 1983 when Pearce attended art school. “I wanted to paint like Caravaggio. I looked at those great paintings, the old masters, and I loved that stuff. I was interested in light and figurative drawing,” Pearce said. Conversations with art school instructors proved fruitless, though. “They would say, ‘Oh, you don’t want to do figurative art. There’s no room for that.’ I got a bit lost, frankly.” Being lost, however, had its upside, and Pearce found theater a welcome change. Not acting or directing, but behind the scenes, a whole world opened up to him by accident. “I went to a news agent on a Tuesday—I never used to go to get a paper on Tuesday, but I walked by and picked up the Guardian’s education section, and I saw this ad for Dartington College,” Pearce said. “It’s closed now, unfortunately, but in those days it was this really interesting, experimental, mad school where they did just fascinating stuff based on the principles of Rudolf Steiner.” Steiner was a late 19thand early 20th-century philosopher whose work impacted everything from literary criticism to art, architecture, and agriculture. “I learned so much about creativity there. It was fantastic, and it was all because I bought a paper on a Tuesday instead of my usual Thursday.” Pearce took his Tuesday revelation and ended up doing set and lighting design and publicity: for first a dance school and then a theater. He loved the work, and the thread that weaves that formative period of his life to the present is more like a cable; something about using light to create moments and illuminate figures on the stage spoke to Pearce. “I really loved doing that. Lighting was so interesting, and it got me into understanding that. At the time, I wasn’t conscious of that, but I think it led me in the direction I went in painting.” He studied technique and skill, earning a master of fine arts degree from USC and then a doctorate from Plymouth University, all while living here in the U.S., his adopted home country. Pearce is just about to turn 50 and came to this country on his birthday in 1990. Twenty-five years later, he’s in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen. “People gripe about the United States, and I think they’re completely wrong,” he said. “There’s more personal liberty here than anywhere in the world, and I quite like that.” As the organizer of TRAC, Pearce said he believes representational art is coming back. His book is testament to the idea, and he is passionate about figurative painting. “Postmodern aesthetics has kind of run out of steam,” he said. “It was a very destructive philosophy, as was relativism, and, of course, nihilism. There’s nothing left in those. They’re not a great way of looking at the world.” Emergence, by contrast, is a natural way of looking at the world, Pearce said. “Emergence has you looking upward and outward, not inward and downward.

13

It’s about things being greater than the sum of their parts.” Pearce believes that the mind is an emergent quality that one must consider when looking at human culture. “Culture is a combination of all those elements of things that people make,” he said. “It’s inverted Plato. In Plato, everything emanates from God. In emergence, there’s everything—and ideas come from that. I think these things that are in the universe are the mind of God, we’re part of the mind of God.” So painting representational and figurative art is, for Pearce, a true and natural exploration of human culture, and studying it tells us more about ourselves than piles of shoes and collections of string. Now about two-thirds of the way through another book he’s writing on the subject of kitsch, Pearce’s artistic worldview is unironic and unapologetically optimistic. “I remember seeing Odd Nerdrum’s paintings at a museum in Long Beach in the 1990s. In those days there wasn’t much representational art around,” Pearce said. Nerdrum was one of the speakers at the first TRAC gathering in 2012. “It was mind boggling and extraordinary. Here was a guy painting in spectacular technique, reminiscent of the old masters, and he wasn’t all about despair. The people in his paintings were sort of wandering in this desperate landscape trying to find new answers. They were hopeful.” Pearce said that Nerdrum’s paintings were revelatory because they were contemporary and sentimental. “Kitsch is sentimentality, and that is the human condition,” he said. “Love, beauty, and grace are the things that define us, and fine art has said no to all of that. It’s absurd. Kitsch is great. Of course there is tawdry cheap stuff, but then what could be more sentimental than ‘King Lear’ or a Dickens novel? It’s sentimental and necessary for art.” But kitsch has many levels, and Shakespeare or Dickens are not the same as a picture of a puppy chasing a ball. And for Pearce, art is not only about evoking emotion. “It’s also about the sharing of an idea. It’s the only thing we make that is solely about sharing an idea— its only purpose is to serve the mind.” His studio is currently awash in paintings he’s preparing for a show in September at Camarillo’s Studio Channel Islands. The paintings, in various states of readiness, all center on the theme of relationship. “It’s all about how we can’t really know each other,” said Pearce. “Falling in love is at least getting close. You fall in love by experiencing another person—and art is the same way.” If that’s true, Pearce said, then artists shouldn’t spend so much time on negativity and bringing other people down. “Why wouldn’t you make stuff that’s deliberately made to raise them up?” In that vein, Pearce continues construct rather than deconstruct. “Love is the answer to nihilism,” he said. “You can’t deconstruct love.” That seems at the heart of his painting, teaching, and writing. As Pearce himself said, “I think art has a lot to do with love.”

PROFILE A couple that plays together: Bevan Manson with his musician wife, Jennie Hansen, in their Oxnard home.

FLOWMASTER

Bevan Manson and the art of ascribing a narrative to music.

BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL MONTANO, WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF JACK KEOUGH I HEARD AN INTERESTING COMMENT ON THE TUBE recently, by a composer whose name I didn’t catch. He spoke about ascribing a narrative to music. I mention this because Bevan Mason, a brilliant, somewhat eccentric, extremely talented musician/composer/ writer who I hung around like a bad suit for a couple of months, usually ascribes narratives to his music. It might not be my narrative — or yours, for that matter — but each composition seemingly has its own unique story tied to it. His stories might not match the images in your mind or mine, but that doesn’t really matter. What matters is that there are a lot of people on the planet and, like a fingerprint, each one is unique. Some are more unique than others, and the way we hear music and visualize images from what we hear is completely individualistic, like Bevan Manson, who may have a PhD in “flow.”

What is flow? Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is the architect of the notion of “flow,” the creative moment when a person is completely involved in an activity for its own sake. Csikszentmihalyi has contributed pioneering work to our understanding of happiness, creativity, human fulfillment, and the notion of “flow” as a state of heightened focus and immersion in activities such as art, play, and work. He says that when we are involved in [creativity], we feel that we are living more fully than during the rest of life. The social theorist says creativity is a central source of meaning in our lives. If that’s the case, Bevan Mason has a super rich and more meaningful life than most. I first heard Bevan Manson perform at a house concert in Ventura, in the home of Henning and Linda Ottsen. Bevan played }}

piano and was accompanied by drummer Charles Levin, bassist Tom Etchart, guitarist Hans Ottsen, and flautist Dave Tolegian. They performed a condensed version (called a reduction) of the orchestral score of his piece “Santa Monica Mountains,” which I would hear a few weeks later performed by the Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra. (Bravo, by the way, to the CICO for including a challenging piece by a local, living composer.) Jazz was also on the program, including some of Bevan’s original compositions, like “The Gaze,” a tune inspired by Ventura’s views that was so pretty it moved me to tears. Bevan has composed over 100 jazz tunes, by the way. But his delightful sense of humor and great chops shined through in his composition “Dangerous Paws,” a cheerful, energetic piece inspired by his gaggle of dogs that had some funny little bonmots/musical references, including a musical phrase from “How Much is That Doggy in the Window?” My friend Twyla, who went with me to the concert, astutely observed, “He’s like a hummingbird.” Yes, the man seems to be in constant motion, whether he’s ticking the ivories of the piano or pacing back and forth listening to one of his compositions being performed. Bevan is an East Coast transplant who moved to Oxnard from Santa Monica almost three years ago. He chaired the jazz program at UC Berkeley and taught at the New England Conservatory of Music, which makes him comfortable speaking in front of an audience as well as performing. After introducing myself to Bevan and his wife after the house concert, he kept me posted of upcoming concerts, and even invited me to another house concert at the home of fellow composer Jeff Beal, who did the score and theme for the Netflix drama “House of Cards.” Since the concert would be in Agoura Hills, Bevan offered to carpool from his pad in Oxnard, if I didn’t mind going a bit early — adding that I could catch a ride back with his lovely violist wife, Jennie Hansen, an accomplished musician in her own right. I arrived on time and walked to the front door, where I also crossed paths with a concert violinist friend of the couple who had spent the previous night. Five little dogs (the couple adopts rescue dogs) greeted, licked, and welcomed me. If you didn’t surmise that Bevan is a super nice,

kind, and thoughtful human by now, you may not be paying attention. The afternoon house/chamber concert consisted of works from five composers who make up Improvisatory Minds, a group of full-time working jazz musicians who, like Bevan, compose modern day classical music. “We are from the same tribe,” Bevan told me. “We love each other’s music and promoting other [musicians].” The consortium has produced seven concerts, most in Los Angeles and one in New York City, and they often include a guest composer. Bevan’s piece, “Small Places in America,” consisted of four movements: Ventura Botanical Gardens (lovely, romantic), Relationship Dance Burbank (interesting and complex, like the composer), The Old Town (his evocative, romantic riff on Boston), and Ludwig at Artie’s Deli (83rd and Broadway). There was nothing small about the enthusiastically received composition, beautifully performed by the accomplished members of The New Hollywood String Quartet. The pictures in my mind (remember, he creates narratives for his pieces) included an old shop, horse and carriage, women dressed in crinolines and corsets, strolling in a park. Life going on, just as Bevan had described it. His three-movement piece about “a few places and incidents” has local meaning, with the first movement based on Ventura Botanical Gardens, where the composer noted, “One can take respite, and exercise, and can even feel lonely.” The stories equated with his music range from funny to poignant, imaginative, and observational. To top off the springtime musical riches, a few days later I went to one of Bevan’s jazz gigs at Squashed Grapes in Midtown Ventura, where he tore up the ivories for a small but appreciative audience. You can often hear Bevan at the cozy jazz club, as well as at downtown’s Café Fiore, where he plays with Leigh Vance and Friends. Don’t take my word for it. Go hear Bevan play, or try to get to one of his concerts. Better yet, buy one of his CDs. Those who know Bevan are swift to label him with superlatives like “genius” and “brilliant.” And he is. But he is also humble and funny and kind, which in my book, is the most brilliant kind of genius of all. Follow Bevan Manson online at bevanmanson.com

CONVERSATION

Douglas Lochner in his Oak View studio, grinding away at his latest gravity-inspired sculpture.

THE PRIMAL TOUCH Photo by Christopher Zsarnay / Zstudios.com

Minimalist sculptor Douglas Lochner on dynamic tension, peace and joy, and the power of “junk art” as a catalyst to a feeling. INTERVIEW BY RYAN A. SMITH

T

HE ROAD TO BECOMING AN ARTIST IS TYPICALLY the one less traveled. For the Ojai Valley’s Douglas Lochner, it began in an entirely different world. Indeed, Lochner’s whitecollar successes in the fields of advertising, marketing, computer software, and energy are worthy of their own feature articles. But he gladly jumped off the corporate gravy train, trading suit-and-tie executive meetings for leather coveralls and furnaces inside his Oak View art studio. Seven years on, Lochner is now forging uncharted paths in the fine art world.

Less than a decade ago you owned two highly reputable and profitable businesses, Flexible Logic® and Flexible Energy®. Have you ever doubted your decision to leave the corporate world to pursue art? I have no regrets. I was at the height of my professional career and was bored, the work was no longer challenging or fulfilling. I’ve altered career paths several times in my life and have never looked back; I see each new path as a natural evolution, allowing me to learn and grow with exciting new challenges and opportunities. You began creating “junk art” as a hobby while still running two companies. How did working with discarded materials help focus the artistic side of your brain? I’ve always been creative, but usually constrained within a business environment requiring a high level of finesse and discipline. I started “playing” with scrap metal and junk because it was so totally different from my day-today work. It was crude, dirty, and grungy. Forging rusty metal — getting it white-hot and beating on it with a hammer — was about as far away from my day job as I could get. It was a wonderful stress release. It allowed me to nourish my primal creative instincts (and stay sane) while still working in a more traditional business structure. You’ve said that you “strive to create art that touches people on a primal level, exploring universal themes that circumvent the limitations of language and culture.” Which primal concepts do your works wordlessly discuss? I strive to create joyous works: Rejoice is a good example. After all, it is just bent stainless steel tubing; however, most people see happy people dancing, and viewing it makes them feel good. Trinity is very soothing. Again, it is just formed glass, yet it has a unique presence. It is a catalyst to a feeling, as is Impact and Let’s Swim, each providing a different sensation. Sculpturally, how are you able to achieve these statements? By understanding and leveraging subconscious triggers and primal emotions you can create works that impart a feeling without the need to be analyzed or deciphered by the viewer. Materials, shape, scale, color and light are all important components of the whole, everything working together to foster a level of intimacy and communication with the viewer. You’ve been commissioned to create Wings of Honor, a magnificent installation of cantilevered glass designed to honor those who served at the Santa Barbara Marine Corps Air Station during World War II. Why do you feel it is important to not include war imagery? To me, it is not about bullets and bayonets or the icons of war; it is about service and sacrifice. We all instinctively feel good when we see an unselfish act of kindness. With Wings of Honor, I am trying to elicit that joy

and connect it to the memory of our veterans. I felt it was a travesty to associate the sacrifice made by these men and women with the horrors of war. The sculpture is a monument to the power and grace of the human spirit in service to others. It celebrates the best of mankind, not the worst. If completed to your specs, will you consider this your masterpiece? That is a good question. Wings of Honor certainly will be the largest and most ambitious work I’ve done to date. It also is a technical and engineering marvel, the only one of its kind worldwide. As far as it outweighing my other works, I don’t see it that way. To me, it is not about size or budget; it is about purity and truth. All my major works have been site or event specific. They all had different influences and criteria, and each was approached with the same intensity and care as Wings of Honor. What are your favorite universal themes to explore, and how? Joy and peace. Peace as in serenity or being in harmony, and joy because there just isn’t enough joy in the world. Gravity and balance are also consistent factors in my work as is nature. For the last year or so, I’ve been interested in flocking and swarming behaviors (of people, insects, birds, and fish), which are based on very complex rules of attraction, intersection, and repulsion. The swirls of colored frit in my blown glass pieces are an analog representation of schooling fish. The flowing energy particles in Stream are based on very complex mathematical algorithms designed to model this intricate, natural behavior. I’m now taking these concepts to the next level: a very large (50+ feet) abstract sculptural representation of schooling fish and a new series of “flocking” digital interactive works. What are you expressing with the use of cantilevering in your sculptures? A sense of tension is a consistent thread in my work, often obtained by cantilevering an object such that it appears to be precariously balanced. This creates dynamic tension — your primal mind sees the object on the verge of falling, which triggers your subconscious. It’s nothing you need to think about or decipher, just a subtle feeling which adds nuance and energy to the work. You have a special affinity for blowing glass. What is it about the process that has you hooked? Yes, glass blowing is intoxicating. I find molten glass extremely seductive; it is a very intimate and responsive material. You have all the wonderful optical properties of glass to play with, plus an amazing amount of control by leveraging heat and gravity. It is the combination of those natural forces coupled with the time constraints that force a spontaneity that I seldom experience with other mediums. Some of my metal sculptures have taken years to fabricate, where my blown glass works are typically birthed in less than 15 minutes. There is something highly therapeutic to me in that.

Most recently, you’ve revisited your computer software coding days and found a way to blend it into art. What spawned this new medium? I was looking for a way to make my sculptures more intriguing and interactive, so I began experimenting with the Arduino microcontroller and a variety of sensor technologies. It just so happened at that time I was to be in a group show at the Ojai Valley Museum. The director, Michele Pracy, set a theme of “Rejuvenation” and asked each artist to revisit something from their past and make it new, so I created Stream. In a very true sense, it is my computer skills being reborn as art. Technologically, what is going on behind the scenes to create Stream? It uses a hidden structured light 3-D camera and a computer to look at a scene, it processes the image in real-time to isolate any humans from the background. These are then traced to produce polygons, flipped so as to be a mirror image of the viewer and filled with a stream of swarming, charged particles which are displayed on the “canvas”, which is actually a high-definition monitor. The use of “open-source” technology is key to your “smart” sculptures. Can you explain what this is? Open-source is, essentially, software (and now hardware) that is available free for noncommercial use, typically created and maintained by a highly dedicated, unpaid group of volunteer programmers and engineers. Some of the best software and development tools available today are opensource. The Arduino microcontroller is a fabulous example of open-source hardware. It is a wonderful invention that is literally changing the world. (Log on to ted.com and search for “Arduino” to learn how this tiny device is “open-sourcing imagination.”) How do you envision something like Stream being presented in a public, interactive environment? I envision Stream and its counterparts projected along a long hallway in a public space, like an airport. Wouldn’t it be cool to get on a moving sidewalk at LAX and have the wall interact with you as you go to your gate? Are there any new processes that you are getting very excited about now? My work is very process-driven. I am constantly experimenting with materials and techniques, and refining my skills. I have some new interactive works in early development that I am very excited about. I’m in the early phase of a major body of work based on “intelligent human aware sculptures,” which I find very exciting. I’m also constantly pushing the limits with glass. I guess the best I can tell you is to check my website every so often. Keep up with Douglas Lochner and his latest projects at artthatworks.com. TOP TO BOTTOM: A sample of the type of dynamic moving images created by Stream, a fully interactive digital sculpture from 2014; Douglas Lochner blowing glass at Ventura Hot Glass; and a 2013 selection of blown glass vessels.

SHORT LIST JOHN NAVA: SELECTED PAINTINGS AND TAPESTRIES

Through November 8 | Santa Paula Art Museum The Santa Paula Art Museum presents John Nava: Selected Paintings and Tapestries, a survey of works by internationally renowned painter and tapestry designer John Nava. The exhibition includes works never before shown in Ventura County, and some that will be exhibited publically for the first time. One highlight is a magnificent 16-foot-high tapestry designed by Nava as a test for his tapestries for the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. 117 N. 10th St., Santa Paula. For more information, visit santapaulaartmuseum.org.

CUBANOS: ISLAND PORTRAITS BY LORENZO DESTEFANO

Through September 13 Museum of Ventura County The Museum of Ventura County will exhibit photographs taken by Lorenzo DeStefano on trips to Cuba between 1993 and 1998. In the photographs we see glimpses of everyday life in Cuba from 20 years ago. Candid portraits allow viewers to explore unfamiliar landscapes and people, while reaffirming our common humanity. 100 E. Main St., Ventura. For more information, visit venturamuseum.org.

FAULT LINES: OJAI PLAYRIGHT CONFERENCE

August 2 – 9 | Matilija Auditorium & Zalk Theater at Besant Hill School Under the direction of Artistic Director/Producer Robert Egan, carefully selected playwrights will join together for an intensive two-week, in-residence conference to develop new works for the American theater. This process culminates in the OPC Summer New Works Festival, a five-day celebration of new plays and creative collaboration featuring readings of new plays, special performance events, and the popular OPC Youth Workshop show. For tickets and more information, visit ojaiplays.org.

SERGIO’S CARTOON COLLECTION

August 1 – January 3 | Ojai Valley Museum Explore the world of cartoons through the personal collection of MAD Magazine cartoonist and Ojai resident Sergio Aragonés. Over a century of cartoons will be exhibited. Daily and Sunday comic strips include Blondie, For Better or Worse, and Peanuts, to name a few. Also included will be single-panel comics from magazines such as Playboy and The New Yorker. Aragonés has been a MAD Magazine contributor since 1963, and there will be an entire section of cartoon art from that magazine. 130 W. Ojai Ave., Ojai. For more information, visit ojaivalleymuseum.org.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM: WESTSIDE STORY

August 6 – 15 | Rubicon Theatre, Ventura “West Side Story” is the award-winning adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet. The feuding families become two warring New York City gangs, whose hatred escalates to a point where neither can coexist with any form of understanding. But when Riff’s best friend (and former Jet), Tony, and Bernardo’s younger sister, Maria, meet at a dance, no one can do anything to stop their love. For more information, visit rubicontheatre.org.

HORACIO MARTINEZ

August 7 – 31 | Vita Art Center, Ventura There is something deeply personal about Horacio’s portraits. Apart from the obvious skill with which they are made, they show us something about the connection he has to each sitter. They are not glamorous, but rather earnest expressions of human qualities, whether a dignified display of masculinity or a demure sense of the feminine. Opening reception on August 7 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Vita Art Center, located in the Bell Arts Factory, 432 N. Ventura Ave. Studio 30, Ventura. For more information, visit vitaartcenter.com.

Beautiful Queen Anne Home

This 2.5 story Queen Anne style (Victorian) home was constructed in 1894 by Judge Felix Ewing, who was the only judge in Ventura County at the time. It features artisan stained glass windows in the master bath; curved leaded glass windows in front; five custom fireplaces; and fine woodwork with

handsome staircase railings, four unique parquet floor designs and large Maplewood pocket doors. The entrance is graced by a covered portico with ionic columns and Batchelder tiles beneath a curved 2nd-floor porch with ocean views. It has a two-story garage with pergola and fountain. OCEAN DREAMS 2

S

A client loved the ideas of the Ocean Dreams Pendant you saw here last month. But wished to have earrings instead of a pendant. Here are the renderings of the earrings we are building to fill that wish. We will be delivering the finished earrings just about the time this Ventana is delivered to your door. Each pair of Opals is unique. Which requires each piece in the Ocean Dreams series to be just a little different from all the rest. Just as each client's dreams are different. Each creation is fabulous because it comes from You!
