EDITOR’S NOTE

ORAL TRADITION 2.0 THERE IS AN IRISH GREAT-GRANDFATHER ON a rocking chair. He’s bouncing a child on his knee—tweed flat cap atop the narrow egg of his head, sinewy limbs pockmarked by work scars. He smells of Guinness. Of sweat and pipe tobacco. And the young girl doesn’t mind that his woolen V-neck sweater is grating her skin like Dubliner Cheese. She is a laughing porcelain doll, lost in the moment. Family members are watching and smiling. Because generations are colliding here in front of them. Here in this toasty cottage. And I can smell the wood smoke, the booze and tobacco, the steaming bacon and cabbage. I can feel the heavy mustiness of age. I’ve gone to the Emerald Isle and back in time. I’ve experienced the five senses. I’m four lines, 35 words, into Mary Kay Rummel’s “Ars Poetica” and already I’ve colored her selfreflective poem with my own life experiences. Thirty-five measly words. Granted, it’s the second or third time I’ve read the piece. The rest of it is thick with characters: gangsters, saints and sinners, priests and nuns. And all throughout, there is Mary—first as a child, then a grown woman embracing the confusion of her middle years. She weaves the arc of her life into the present moment and lays it down for us to do what we will with it. Welcome to Oral Tradition 2.0—the evolution of storytelling. Poetry. I’ve never met any of the people in Mary’s poem. I’ve never met Mary. For all I know, her great-grandfather lived in a ritzy apartment and despised tweed, and rocking chairs. And he may have been a white wine drinker or, dare I say, a teetotaler, a soft codger with scarless skin and none of the whiskysoaked Irishness with which I’ve painted him. But in my mind, there is a cottage. The fields are green, of course. Black pints of Guinness flow for the men in the pub while, at home, a gossipy herd sips hot tea and mashes potatoes.

FEBRUARY 2014

In life, we color everything with our own perception. In poetry—indeed, in most or all forms of art—that’s the point. As the painter Edgar Degas put it, “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” Well then, Mary Kay Rummel’s poetry is, undeniably, art. She clearly deserves to be Ventura County’s first poet laureate—no doubt about that. The question is: What exactly is a poet laureate? In our interview on page 25, Mary discusses the position and how it relates to our local community. But I was curious to see what poet laureates have done on a national level. Joseph Brodsky brought poetry to airports, supermarkets, and hotel rooms. Maxine Kumin started a series of poetry workshops for women at the Library of Congress, and both Gwendolyn Brooks and Rita Dove focused on elementary school kids. Robert Hass organized the “Watershed” conference, which brought together noted novelists, poets, and storytellers to talk about writing, nature, and community. One of the things Mary hopes to do is share the stories of older people through poetry. Now, as much as I’d enjoy a little poetry while being frisked by TSA, I think Mary is on to something more significant. (No offense, Mr. Brodsky.) In Japan, on keir no hi, or Respect for the Aged Day, the entire nation bows to those who came first. I don’t expect such grandiosity, but if I do eventually get the big promotion from dad to grandpa to “great,” a simple nod of respect would be nice. And I like to think a few rascally youths would be interested in my stories. That they’d live on in some physical form. As Mary Kay Rummel so eloquently put it, “I do not want to die without writing my watery unwritten universe.”

The Perfect Pair Music and wine—with a hint of Ventura terroir BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK • PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIE GREGORIO-OVIEDO There’s some very cool stuff happening at Main and Seaward. It’s my second Saturday night visit, and the place is bustling. People of all ages are milling around, glasses of wine in hand as 20-year-old blind musician Rachel Flowers rocks the electric organ, with Adam Clark on drums and guitarist Hans Ottsen on guitar. At the end of her first set, Flowers switches to flute. The audience is mesmerized by her sweet rendition of “Body and Soul,” and couples and friends embrace. Four-year-old Tara, one of the patron’s children, charms the hushed crowd with her interpretive dance on stage. The song ends and the audience burst into a loud applause, roaring with appreciation. It is a fine evening filled with great jazz, a convivial crowd, house-made wine, and good eats—especially the fried Brussels sprouts. Squashed Grapes sounded like the perfect pairing: wine and jazz. How could I not know of this place? Was it a speakeasy? An insider spot? I had written about the bounty of great jazz venues in Ventura County for Ventana a couple years ago. Was my brain mush? No. That was just about the time they started presenting jazz, on Friday

nights only. It was time to put on my gumshoes and do some sleuthing. I made a call and reached Adam Randall, one of the owners. Adam hails from the south. He was born in Texas and grew up in Louisiana, and he attributes his discovery of jazz to New Orleans, which has “the best food and music in the country.” He told me the lineup and I said I’d see him on Saturday night. On my first visit, I invited a bunch of Ventura friends to meet me for wine tasting, music, and grub. We had a wonderful evening. We tasted nine wines, all with cool jazz labels, deeming Bella Blanc, a Chardonnay/Semillon blend with Billie Holiday on the label, our favorite white ($6 glass/$20 bottle) and the Cabernet/Alicante not only as rad as Miles Davis on the label, but a good pairing with a “porkstrami” sandwich from the Saturday night food truck, Scratch. The music on my first visit was also dynamite. Saxophonist Jon Stanger played classic jazz tunes with bassist Jeff Falkner and generously took requests. Drummer Adam Clark dropped in later and picked up the beat. More food—a pizza, some fried risotto balls,

smoked pork and squash tacos—and we were on a roll. Squashed Grapes was opened in Camarillo, in 2003, by Gwen Riplinger and Karen and Bob Taylor (former Ventura city councilman) as a make-your-own-wine shop. In 2005, Gwen’s daughter Danielle Aue and her husband, Alan, along with Josh McNutt, bought the business. Adam joined the party in 2009. Basically, the business morphed into a partnership between Adam, 30, and Josh, 40, who run the front of the house, make and bottle the wine, book the talent, and keep the customers happy while Danielle keeps the books. The business moved to Main Street in October 2010. “Once we moved to Ventura, we still helped people make their own wine, but we morphed into a winery and started making wine under our own Squashed Grapes label,” Adam told me. He also admitted that he began making wine, as well as hard apple cider, in high school. Same for Josh, a Southern California native who made high-octane beer before attending art school. He later chucked the corporate world and morphed from a customer of Squashed Grapes into an owner—who, by the way, still works an additional full-time job while raising two kids. The duo produces just 500 cases annually, with varietals such as Syrah, Tempranillo, Zinfandel, Grenache, a Chardonnay-Semillion Blend, and Pinot Grigio. In addition to wine, the venue offers grub from roving food trucks and Cordello’s Pizza, which delivers salads, subs, pizzas, and more. “We put the delivery on a silver tray and bring it right to the table,” noted Adam. Then there’s the music, which isn’t limited to weekends. Wednesdays are particularly hot, when top talent is more available to book a gig in a small venue. When Skip Spirrows’ 12-member “Little Big Band” blows into the 50-seat space, “It’s a ratio of one musician per every four people,” laughed Adam. Join the Facebook page to keep up with the schedule of performers. No matter how you cut it, squash it, fry it, or ferment it, Squashed Grapes is one of my favorite new discoveries. One patron from Santa Barbara, when asked if she’d come back again, replied enthusiastically, “Oh, yes.” v And so will I.

THE UNIVERSE of the WATERY UNWRITTEN Ventura County welcomes its first poet laureate: Mary Kay Rummel INTERVIEW BY TREE BERNSTEIN PHOTOGRAPH BY GARYANDPIERRESILVA.COM

T

HE HOI POLLOI MIXED WITH POETS AND POLITICOS AT THE Ventura County Arts Council’s recent induction of the county’s first poet laureate, Mary Kay Rummel. Senator Julia Brownley sent a representative, along with congratulations. Senator Hanna-Beth Jackson noted that the presence of a county poet laureate will serve to focus attention on the importance of the arts in local schools. The history of poet laureates goes back to the Greeks, who actually crowned their poets with a laurel wreath. In the United States, a Poet Laureate Consulate was officially initiated in 1937. Santa Barbara County created its poet laureate position in 2005; Los Angeles followed suit in 2012. Now, Ventura County has the distinction of honoring the literary arts with our own poet laureate. Rummel will serve for two years as the official poet and ambassador of poetry for Ventura County. It was Fernando Albert Salinas who proposed the idea to the Ventura County Arts Council. (He has since become a board member.) An advisory committee of local poets was formed to define and refine the poet laureateship role, and to send a call out to poetry groups, art centers, and libraries across the county that the search was on. The VCAC handled the application process, with many qualified applicants in the pool. With seven books of poetry, more than 350 published poems, and dozens of awards, Mary Kay Rummel brings a string of cred to the position. She has taught at Cal State Channel Islands since 2002, and her forthcoming book, The Lifetime Trembles, has already won the 2014 Blue Light Poetry Prize.

How do you see the role of poet laureate in Ventura Country? I see the poet laureate as public ambassador for poetry, a way to make expanded connections among poets and others. The title helps open some doors to poetry, and the poet laureate can use that as a way of reaching out. I don’t think it is about one person—it is about all the gifted poets and writers in Ventura County making community around what can be lonely work. What will that look like? Will you be writing occasion poems for the opening of a new carwash or shopping mall? I hope to initiate projects that will bring in children and their families, as I see poetry as a way to empower children with language and imagination so that they can create new realities. I would also like to begin a project involving older people in sharing their stories through poetry. How do you view the poetry scene in our county? When I came to Ventura I was so impressed with the inclusiveness of the poetry. The unique connections between writers and visual artists also really made an impression. During my tenure, I would like to work with others to deepen these relationships among artists. You’ve been publishing poems for many years. How has your own sense of poetics evolved? Poetry is both private and communal. It is a way for us to be connected to ourselves and our lives, to the wider community, and to the earth through the power and beauty of language. My first big publication, over 35 years ago, was a memory piece about my Irish grandmother sewing clothes for me. Years later I wrote “Ars Poetica,” which goes back to [that grandmother] and even deeper into her influence on me as a writer. What is the job of a poet? And why is poetry important? For me poetry has always been a way to get at deeper meanings of experience—a process of discovery. The languages of the senses, of emotion and music are my passion and my road map through life. I hope to travel deeper into poetry.

ARS POETICA After Jackson Wheeler Because my mother’s mother carried her Irish language across a stormy Atlantic to St. Paul Because my great grandfather who lived to be 100 sang in Irish as he bounced us on his bony leg Because on the front porch of my grandmother’s house the cousins, all named Mary, learned 100 names for green from rebel songs Because I lived sixty years before I learned my mother’s father died drunk under the hooves of a horse he was driving Because my cousin, Sheriff O’Connell, who took bribes from Chicago gangsters, gave money to my widowed grandmother Because when I read about him in St. Paul histories I thought saint not sinner Because my father’s tiny mother came from Galway with a family too full of priests and nuns Because she loved to talk in the way of Irish women over tea and toast at small tables Because I grew up in the quotidian music of women’s murmuring close to the ground where the world begins Because men were either silent or overbearing I lived my girl’s life with Ann of Green Gables and Little Women the bus plying the Old Fort Road to school became my Bridge at San Luis Rey Because art and music were in the church I thought beauty belonged to God Because roots of my young astonishment cling to my inner life like the pine cone—growing even after fire, living scales Because in the convent we were told to be silent I picked up a pen Because of my heart’s homelessness Because love will not let go Because words un-write as they are written un-speak as they are spoken Because my granddaughters listen to my tales of trolls and beanstalks— their eyes pools where words sink and grow the way I once listened to the old ones I do not want to die without writing my watery unwritten universe.

CITY OF LIGHT Never mind Mona Lisa’s smile. Lesser known Parisian attractions got travel writer CAROL STIGGER grinning.

I

N THE MIDST OF OUR HEATED DEBATE

between Switzerland and Italy, my sister offered “Paris” like a peace treaty, and that ended the controversy. We made a list of things to do besides buy scarves and visit the Mona Lisa and booked a boutique hotel in the Latin Quarter. We learned to decipher a Metro map (with a magnifying glass) along with the rewards and the limits of lists. Parapluies Simon (Umbrellas Simon) was not on our list. We happened upon the shop on arrival day during our jetlagged stumble to Luxembourg Gardens, which was on the list. This boutique with ceiling vaulted like an open umbrella has been keeping Parisians chic and dry since 1897. Devoted to keeping the umbrella a fashion statement instead of a boring necessity, Parapluies Simon offers approximately 3,000 umbrellas for every mood and fashion. From frilly parasols to stately gray umbrellas with curved, wooden handles that could take on a monsoon, the shop gave us even more respect for the capitol city of style. The shop also offers umbrella repair services. “Only in Paris,” we sighed, “would one own an umbrella worth repairing.” We eventually wilted into chairs in Luxembourg Gardens and watched children sail rented toy boats in the large, central fountain. The Gardens were created by Marie de Medicis in the 1600s to surround the Palais du Luxembourg she had built to replicate her childhood home: Florence’s Palazzo Pitti. The Palais now houses the French Senate, but the gardens are open to the public and free. On Sundays an orchestra plays in the bandstand, pony rides are offered, and we saw several grown up “children” sailing little rental boats. The park has many strolling paths and hundreds of movable chairs. We read for awhile beside the fountain before exploring. Two delightful finds were a miniature bronze Statue of Liberty and the Medici fountain tucked into a corner and shaded by large trees. Although it was early fall, flowers bloomed in formal gardens validating writer Henry van Dyke’s observation: “Paris is a woman’s

town with flowers in her hair.” The Moulin Rouge was not on our list, but a friend from Geneva who met us in Paris wanted to go. He wanted to go so badly he bought new glasses for the occasion and asked wistfully if we could go twice. No. Like the gondola ride in Venice, the Moulin rouge is something to do. Once. It is a melting pot of tour groups, and the dress code is “whatever.” The meal was three ho-hum courses, the champagne was high quality, and the show was a tasteful twohour extravaganza. Topless, but tasteful. The only distasteful act was an underwater swim with a topless woman and several boa constrictors who looked bored with the whole thing. In addition to dancers in sparkling costumes gyrating in flashing, blinking lights, acrobats defied gravity and a

ventriloquist defied physics. The Moulin Rouge has been drawing crowds since 1889 when the cancan was decidedly naughty. The best thing about the Moulin Rouge was that it inspired a keen interest in the bohemian Montmartre district. Here is where the cancan was born and the first cabaret, Le Chat Noir (The Black Cat), opened in 1881. The cabaret is now a boutique hotel, but the district retains much of its bohemian ambience. Posters and paintings of the Black Cat abound at the Museum of Montmartre. This charming 300-year-old house contains paintings, photographs, and posters that illustrate the bohemian history of the neighborhood. “Le Moulin Rouge” by Toulouse-Lautrec and the “Theatre d’Ombres” by Henri Riviere are two of its most important works. Renoir’s studio was here, and the gardens were recreated using his paintings as a guide. You can sit on a swing swaying in the exact location of his painting “Girl on a Swing,” which now hangs in Paris’ Orsay Museum. The painting was ill-received when he completed it in 1876 and probably never will be put up for auction. Two of Renoir's paintings have sold for more than $70 million, and the Orsay knows how to hang on to its treasures. From the garden, you can see a vineyard that has existed since the Middle Ages and was replanted in 1933. According to the New York Times, the vineyard is reputed to make the most expensive bad wine in Paris. We decided not to sample the wine, but the view is stunning. We saved the most poignant attraction on our list for our last day. The official Le Petit Prince store is in a quiet Parisian neighborhood. No grand marquee announces its location, and

we walked by it once expecting bright lights and helium balloons. But the shop is as modest as the Little Prince and, like his asteroid, has just what we needed: silk scarves made in France, baby clothes, note cards and post cards, little cups and plates, mugs, fuzzy foxes and sheep, and the Prince’s proud rose with four thorns. We wondered, perhaps for the first time since we were children, if the sheep ate the Prince’s cherished rose. After all these decades it remains an important question—as important as sunsets are to the Little Prince. What do we tell the grandchildren after we read them the book and give them each a fuzzy sheep? We will tell them that the sheep did not eat the rose, because children who read the book draw what the pilot forgot to draw: a strap for the sheep’s muzzle. If you missed the book by Saint-Exupery, it was published in 1943 and is the most read and most translated book in the French language. Our mother was reading it to us before we could toddle. That night, we strolled around the Latin Quarter. Shakespeare and Company Book Store was a special treat with its maze of rooms and selection of books both current and rare. That first edition of Babar the fictional elephant was hard to pass up. Hunger struck with a surprising twist. “I want to eat French fries in France,” my sister said. We bought carry-out French fries at a gyros shop and carried our snacks to a park bench facing the Seine. Notre Dame gleamed under flood lights and the moon rose as we finished our fries and agreed with Hepburn that Paris is always a good idea. v

THE ART OF LOVE At home with Elisse Pogofsky-Harris and Robert Brown.

T

BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CINDY PITOU BURTON

he moment I walked onto the grounds of Elisse Pogofsky-Harris

and Robert Brown’s Ojai property, during the 2013 Ojai Studio Artists Tour, I got that tingly feeling in my body that said, “Oh, this is going to be wonderful.” And indeed it was—and still is. I strolled through the gate and past a lovely pool and wooden house reminiscent of an East Coast cottage before entering Elisse’s high-ceilinged art studio. Built of wood, stained the same grayish blue color as the house, with a row of high windows providing the northern light coveted by artists, the room reeked of creativity. I admired the many works and the variety of images for sale. We chatted briefly before I mustered the courage to ask if I could also peek inside her house, guessing it would be equally charming. The artist kindly obliged and we walked into her home, which met, and surpassed, my expectations. Out popped her tall, striking husband, Robert Brown, who welcomed me with a baritone voice, adding that he wanted to show me some of his artistic efforts as well. The thespian regaled me with a bit of his theatrical background, while sharing a portfolio of stunning black-

and-white photographs he’d taken in Europe. This being the month of Cupid, it makes perfect sense to share Elisse and Robert’s love story, which first blossomed some 34 years ago. But first, the Cliff Notes on the couple’s long and interesting bios. Elisse Pogofsky-Harris is a Chicago native known for her highly personalized narrative paintings infused with symbolism, as well as abstract sky and seascapes. She creates evocative etchings, mysterious imagery, and charming drawings. Humans, drapes and kimonos, wolves, sky, and sea have all been represented under her deft hand and keen eye. Her art is in many private and museum collections, and she is currently at work on “not so still” still lives. Her husband, Robert Brown, began as a stage actor in New York in the late 1940s. As a television actor, he appeared in classic programs like “Perry Mason,” “Bewitched,” and “Bonanza.” Fans of “Star Trek” know him as Lazurus, but more interestingly, he pounded the boards on Broadway, appearing with Helen Hayes in Somerset Maugham’s “The Circle,” Dame Judith Anderson in “Come of Age,” and Zero Mostel in “Ulysses in Nightown.” There were other notable productions, includ-

OPPOSITE: In the living room, antique curios and mid-19th-century portraits reflect the couple’s interest in history. BELOW: November 13th. Only after she’d finished did Elisse realize the work was a self-portrait.

ing quite a bit of Shakespeare, before Robert was lured to Hollywood. In 1978, he gave up acting—and “having to put on makeup and fancy clothes”—and moved to Ojai to begin anew, although he commuted to L.A. to do voiceover and narration work. Their property, which they bought 15 years ago after living in the east end of Ojai for many years, is a blended cornucopia of treasures and antiques collected throughout their lifetimes and marriage. Eighteenth and 19th-century Spanish and Italian paintings and furnishings are artistically integrated with Chinese, African, and Native American artifacts. A very small handful of Elisse’s paintings are on display. But stunning bronze sculptures of her as model/muse, created by her first husband, adorn outdoor walls and the entrance gate. As one might imagine, it is not unusual for each of them to finish one another’s sentences or make loving comments. Case in point, regarding the property that took them

six months to put into habitable condition: “We were looking for a place to build a studio, as well as a property we felt comfortable living in,” said Elisse. “We came here and sat for one whole day, and it felt really wonderful. After we moved into the house, we started on the studio, which is almost perfect. Nothing is perfect.” “You’re perfect!” Robert chimed in. As Elisse puts it, “We both had experiences of many different things in life, and we knew what love was really about by the time we met. Robert was totally supportive of my work; there was mutual support and love. We were soul mates, weren’t we?” “Absolutely,” Robert answers firmly, while also referring to their relationship as a renaissance and adding, “We still are. Living together as two creative people was very easy to do. We respected each other’s creative ability and reassured each other on a daily basis. We brought so much joy and support to each other’s lives.”

I recently saw a black-and-white image of a couple who had been married for 65 years. It reminded me of Elisse and Robert. The pair was wrapped sweetly in one another’s arms, and the caption read, When asked how they managed to stay together for so many years, they replied, “We were born in a time where if something was broke, you fixed it, not threw it away.” Robert harkened back to those times during our conversation. “My Scottish mother and English father were both born before the motorcar and the telephone. They would often talk about life as they knew it no longer existing,” he recalled. “Now, the life I knew no longer exists. But Ojai seems pretty much the way it was before the Second World War, which I was in. This life here is yesterday: peaceful, beautiful, and idyllic. We look at the birds and smell the flowers.” Which is exactly what Elisse and Robert and I did on the Sunday morning of my visit. We spotted squirrels and two woodpeckers with bright red heads in the garden. Elisse showed me her favorite oak tree, a majestic old specimen, and I picked an orange that somehow called to me from of one of their many fruit trees. If it ain’t broke, as the saying goes, don’t fix it. Here’s a toast to the good life, the long life, the creative life—and a life of love, in idyllic Ojai, all under the guise of Cupid’s potent arrow. v

SHORT LIST VINTAGE VALENTINE EXHIBITION AND GALLERY TALK

Through March 2 | Ventura County’s Agriculture Museum More than three dozen valentines from the late 19th and early 20th centuries will be displayed at the Museum of Ventura County’s Agriculture Museum. Included in the display are elaborately cut Valentines that open to form three-dimensional objects such as a horse-drawn carriage, early motor car, windmill, zeppelin, and hot air balloon. Arts and Crafts era parchment cards, amusing penny postcards, and a romantic card inspired by Robert Peary’s 1909 North Pole expedition complete the display. Vintage candy boxes will also be shown. On Thursday, February 13, at 2 p.m., Jill Stoliker, the woman who collected the valentines, will give a Gallery Talk. 926 Railroad Ave., Santa Paula. For more information, visit venturamuseum.org.

“TWELFTH NIGHT”

Through February 16 | Ojai Art Center Theater Comic confusions are the norm in this comedy of disguised identities, false letters, spurned lovers, a clown, and a ludicrous duel. Add to the mix a shipwreck, a pair of identical twins, a former pirate, a besotted uncle, a sour butler, and a goofy suitor and you have the makings of one of Shakespeare’s most delightful comedies. Love, of course, is at the heart of the comedy. 113 S. Montgomery St., Ojai. For more information, visit ojaiact.org.

T.O. ART ASSOCIATION JURIED SHOW

February 3 - 27 | Thousand Oaks Community Gallery The show will feature some of the finest art and artists from a fourcounty area (L.A., Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Orange). Nationally recognized artist Bill Anderson will judge. Several hundred dollars will be awarded in categories including oil/acrylic, photography/digital art, mixed media, and sculpture. A “Best of Show” cash award was donated by CLU. The public is invited to the Awards Reception on Sunday, February 9 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Thousand Oaks Community Gallery. 2331 Borchard Rd., Newbury Park. For more information, visit thousandoaksartassoc.org.

FOCUS ON THE MASTERS ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: TRACY LEE STUM

EDDIE PALMIERI AND HIS LATIN JAZZ BAND

February 21 - March 30 | Camarillo Skyway Playhouse Based on the beloved film and book, Willy Wonka is the timeless tale of the mysterious candy man as he stages a contest involving five hidden Golden Tickets that allow five special children into his factory, and give them a lifetime supply of free candy. Four of the five don’t seem to follow the enigmatic Wonka’s rules, but a young lad named Charlie Bucket learns that through Wonka and his Oompa-Loompas, his life can be changed forever. Featuring classic songs from the film, including “Candy Man” and “Pure Imagination,” as well as brand new songs written for the play, this musical is one for those who will be forever young at heart. 330 Skyway Dr., Camarillo. For more information, visit skywayplayhouse.org.

February 22 | Vita Art Center Come for some wine and painting in a relaxed, fun environment, with expert guidance. No experience is necessary. You will be guided stepby-step through an original piece of art. At the end of the night, you’ll take home a one-of-a-kind painting. $40. 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. For more information, visit vitaartcenter.com.

ON THE HORIZON

March 2 - 5 | Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach Artists, critics, academics, collectors, and curators will return to Ventura in March for the second international conference on representational art presented by California Lutheran University. Presentations, panel discussions, and studio art demonstrations will explore the direction of 21st-century representational art, which portrays recognizable people, places, and objects. The conference will include an excursion to the CLU campus, in Thousand Oaks, to see the “Women by Women” exhibit in the Kwan Fong Gallery of Art and Culture and the “Resonating Images III” show in the William Rolland Gallery of Fine Art. CLU faculty members Michael Pearce and Michael Lynn Adams organized the first conference in 2012 to address the lack of critical appreciation of representational art and explore the new directions it might take. 450 E. Harbor Blvd., Ventura. For more information, visit trac2014.org.

FOTM ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

February 15 | Ventura High School Theater Celebrate Valentine’s weekend with Eddie Palmieri and his Latin Jazz Band, winner of nine Grammy awards and the 2013 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master (the highest honor bestowed by the United States). Palmieri’s music is renowned for its infectious sound, distinctive orchestrations, and trailblazing style. His music in the 1970s was the first to incorporate elements of salsa, funk, soul, jazz, and a band comprised of Latin and African-American musicians. His initial Grammy Award, in 1975, was the first time Latin music was recognized by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. 2 Catalina St., Ventura. For more information, visit venturamusicfestival.org.

February 11 | The Comedy Club at The Harbor Eight artists have been selected for FOTM formal documentation for the 2014 season. The first artist featured will be Tracy Lee Stum, an internationally recognized American chalk artist and street painter who specializes in spectacular, interactive 3D chalk art street paintings. A visionary and master in the chalk art world, Tracy’s 3D images continue to inspire and amaze viewers around the globe. Tracy is considered one of the finest street painters today and holds a Guinness World Record for the largest street painting by an individual. 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. 1559 Spinnaker Dr., Ste. 205, Ventura. For more information, visit traceyleestum.com. February 13 | Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza This powerful, dynamic, and unique show will feature Taiko drumming and innovative choreography. Pulse-pounding rhythms will emanate from percussion instruments: from tiny bells to huge drums. Combine the beats with giant props, precision movement, dramatic lighting, and nonstop action and you have any evening of pure adrenaline. The stars of TAO live and train in the mountains of Japan; the performers each bring nontraditional flair to the group by drawing on their diverse backgrounds. Kavli Theater. 8 p.m. Single tickets are priced at $54-$30 with group discounts available. Tickets available from Ticketmaster at 800.745.3000, online at ticketmaster.com, or through the T.O. Civic Arts Plaza Box Office, located at 2100 Thousand Oaks Boulevard. For more information, call 805.449.ARTS (2787) or visit civicartsplaza.com.
