EDITOR’S NOTE

MICHAEL MONTANO

MORE OF THE SIMPLE THINGS

A

t a certain age, it seems, we slip into a state of blissed-out wonder over the simpler things. The sort of things we’ve always observed but rarely scrutinized: a garden bug scaling a blade of grass, drops of morning dew gathering lazily in a meadow, the banter of songbirds. I’m not exactly sure when this began for me, but it’s firmly underway. On our nature walks together, my young kids dart from one attention-grabber to the next while I pause to ogle an exotic flower bloom or the mating rituals of insects. They bounce to and fro while I stare and contemplate and wonder. And I see other parents doing the same, gradually transforming into their parents, their grandparents, warts and all. At some point in my forties, a fascination with ornithology crept into my consciousness. Chalk it up to middle age; you don’t see many young birdwatchers—and I suppose that is what I’ve become: a binocular clutching, feather collecting, amateur “birdwatcher.” It’s a term rife with uncool implications. Until, that is, you meet people like Alyssa and Mike Bordonaro. They’re not stodgy or thick with age. In fact, they’re young and fresh out of college at CSUCI and operating what I consider one of Ventura County’s coolest businesses: The Hawk Pros (cover + p. 33). Federally licensed falconers, Alyssa and Mike train birds of prey to abate “pest birds.” Think crop-devouring starlings, pooping pigeons… It’s a modern take on an ancient art, with roots going back to around 2,000 BC. Alyssa trained her first bird of prey at the age of 10 and introduced Mike to falconry on one of

their first dates, further shattering the unromantic stereotype. In the pages ahead, we also check in with Rick and Laura Mancilla (p. 27), a local couple who took it upon themselves (no architect, no interior designer) to transform a mundane, ‘80s-era house into a uniquely charming country home. Leslie Westbrook put her customary personal spin on the article, infusing what could have been a dry brick-and-mortar piece with the sort of flesh-andblood writing we prefer. Wordsmith Ken McAlpine also lets fly with a poetic, firsthand narrative about his recent trip to Burgundy, in east-central France (p. 19). Don’t expect flag hotels or cliché attractions. Instead, the Ventura-based author regales us with, as he puts it, “the heart, the soul, and the simple yet not-at-all-simple moments of travel that raise goose bumps and remain with you forever.” The poet’s pen. The painter’s brush. If ever there were a musical instrument designed for creating art, it would be the harp. Its sound is the whisper of angels, a spring shower in paradise. To be sure, it is a magical instrument. And there is a virtuoso in our midst. Or, as Leonard Bernstein put it, “simply a genius.” On page 11, Leslee Goodman chats with worldrenowned harpist Heidi Lehwalder, who recently brought her world of experience (she debuted with the Seattle Symphony at age 9 and has performed with more than 65 orchestras in North America) to Upper Ojai, where she’s launched a performing arts series called Chamber on the Mountain. Next up: the March issue, springtime—and more of the simple things that drive us into a state of blissed-out wonder. – Matt Katz mattk@ventanamonthly.com

GENIUS Q&A with Heidi Lehwalder, the creative force behind Ojai’s intimate new concert series. BY LESLEE GOODMAN

W

orld-renowned harpist Heidi Lehwalder has had a long and illustrious career, performing with some 65 orchestras throughout the United States and Canada and touring extensively around the world. Chamber music is her passion, however, which is why in 1988 she founded the Fredericksburg Festival of the Arts, in Virginia, and three years ago launched Ojai’s newest performing arts series, Chamber On The Mountain. She spoke with us about her career, why the harp, and why Ojai. Leslee Goodman: How old were you when you first started to play the harp—and why did you choose it? Heidi Lehwalder: Playing the harp was actually my mother’s idea. She was a cellist in the Seattle Symphony for 40 years and also played in a trio with a violinist and a harpist who (my mother thought) wasn’t very good. She said that if she had a daughter who was halfway talented, her daughter would play the harp. When I started picking out my brother’s songs on the piano by ear before I was three, I was nominated. Then, when the great harpist Lynn Wainwright Palmer moved from Philadelphia to Seattle, my destiny was more or less decided. Palmer accepted me as a student when I was seven years old. I debuted with the Seattle Symphony when I was nine. I remember that I had matured enough that my parents were able to remove the little blocks they had attached to the harp’s pedals so that I could reach them.

ABOVE: Deeply committed to the fine art of chamber music, Heidi Lehwalder teaches around the world and recently launched a concert series in the bucolic folds of Upper Ojai.. LEFT: Heidi’s first publicity photo, at age 8, for her debut with the Seattle Symphony

The irony of it is that I begged my mother to play the flute. But my mother was adamant. All my life people helping me carry my harp would joke, “Why didn’t you play the piccolo?” And I’d always say, “Well, I wanted to.” But it has worked out wonderfully because I’ve been able to play with some of the world’s greatest flutists. LG: You’ve had such an impressive career. What do you consider some of the highlights? HL: First was working as a child with the great harpist Carlos Salzedo—still believed by many to have been one of the greatest harpists of all time. It’s his harp I play on today. I got to study with him for two summers at his music colony in Camden, Maine. In 1960, at the end of the first summer, he said, “I want you to go to the international harp competition in Israel in 1962” and gave me a repertoire to learn. I came back the following year with most of it memorized. He and I worked again that summer, with long lessons every couple of days. But he died the day just before my last lesson. I was extremely attached to him. It didn’t matter that I was 11 and he was 76. Somehow I knew I didn’t have a lot of time with him so I tried to absorb everything I could. The last time I saw him he took my chin, lifted my head and said something I took to be prophetic: “Little girl, you have to carry on.” The next day he died of a heart attack. You can imagine what an honor it is to have his harp now. I went off to Israel the following year and won a major prize. But it was bittersweet because he would have taken me, had he lived. The next high point would have to be auditioning for the CBS Young People’s Concerts before the great conductor Leonard Bernstein. I was 13. I got to audition for him in Carnegie Hall, and after I finished playing he came onto the stage and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I didn’t wash that cheek for a week! He selected me for the first Young People’s Concert performed in the brand new Lincoln Center. A few months later I got to play with the Cleveland Orchestra, which was the greatest in the world at the time. Being one of the first recipients of the Avery Fisher Prize (now the Avery Fisher Career Grant) was another very big deal. And founding the Fredericksburg Festival of the Arts, in Virginia, was a high point. The festival began as a showcase for chamber music, which is my great love and which, unfortunately, I can’t play much of on the harp. LG: Why not? HL: The great classical composers—Bach, Brahms, Beethoven, Mozart—wrote very little music for the harp. I’ve done some arranging for myself, and several contemporary composers have written concerti for me. But the repertoire is limited. I fell in love with chamber music when I was 17 and started attending the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont, where

you had all the greatest musicians congregating in the summer to play chamber music. So in 1988, many years later, I founded the Fredericksburg festival and directed it for 20 years. It was a huge success, was broadcast nationally to 425,000 listeners on Classical WETA in Washington, DC, and is still going strong. In fact, it has grown from a small, world-class chamber music festival into a premier, year-round presenter of the performing arts, including symphonic, operatic, ballet, Shakespeare, and a Young Artists’ Competition. LG: How did you happen to relocate to California? HL: I had returned from the East Coast to teach at the University of Washington in Seattle, but there was something calling me to California. My daughters were here, but there was also something else. It was Ojai. I met Jimmy and Radha Sloss, trustees of the Happy Valley Foundation and the Besant Hill School, who were excited about the possibility of creating a chamber music series here. That was synchronous because my Uncle Austin Bee had been chairman of the Happy Valley Foundation for many years and I have three cousins who graduated from the Besant Hill School. It’s thrilling to bring these fantastic musicians to our cozy venue in a fabulous setting. Everyone loves it. The musicians wake up in the morning and have their coffee staring at the mountains. It’s magical for them. The audiences are delighted; and I’m in my element. LG: What is your vision for Chamber on the Mountain? HL: To continue bringing exceptional talent to this exceptional place—and for the community to understand what is being presented here: musicianship at the highest level. These are artists you could see at the Lincoln or Kennedy Center— but for $25 you’d be seeing them from the farthest row. Here, you get to see them in a very intimate setting and you have the opportunity to interact with them afterwards. For $25! It’s phenomenal. It’s also important to me to give students exposure to the level of talent we are presenting. Last fall when Julia Bullock performed, she met with the Besant Hill School students the next day and had such great rapport with them. It was wonderful to see. Knowing what an impact being surrounded by the world’s greatest musicians at the Marlboro Festival had on me, I’d like to share that kind of opportunity with other young people. I would love for Chamber On The Mountain to include master classes someday. I would also love to get some kind of a summer program going. But for now we’re just planting seeds and they’re starting to sprout. v

TRAVEL

RAINDROPS ON COBBLESTONES Wandering the pastoral ribbon roads of Burgundy Ventura author Ken McAlpine discovers the true France.

T

HERE ARE FEW CERTAINTIES IN LIFE. One of them is that rain sounds better on cobblestones. Within the former l’ancienne chapellerie (hat shop) that Rene and Terri Peeters have turned into a bed and breakfast, you can run your hand across cool stone that may date from the mid-1600s, or you can occupy yourself with warmer matters and then lay in bed with your lover listening to the rain and the church bells, their pealing in the village of Cuiseaux, where they chime precisely at noon and seven, all the more romantic for echoing off ancient stone. Pleasant and wise to adhere to the dictum of British philosopher Bertrand Russell: The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time. To bring you up to speed, Cuiseaux is a charming medieval village in Bresse, Burgundy, not far from Lyon and Dijon in central eastern France. From the nearby town of Bourg-en-Bresse, it is two hours by train to another world called Paris. Home to 1,500, Cuiseaux still boasts portions of its original 12th-century ramparts. Some have called it one of the most charming villages in Burgundy, but if you have been to Burgundy you know this is quibbling, like ranking South Pacific sunsets. Added plus, in Burgundy you have wine and cuisine of the highest order, and much of it you can enjoy only en Bourgogne, because, frankly, why would even the wine and cuisine leave this place? These are interesting facts, but, as any traveler knows, facts give you only the smallest feel for a place, and they neglect the things that truly matter: the heart, the soul, and the simple yet not-at-all-simple moments of travel that raise goose bumps and remain with you forever.

Memories are about splendid details, and few details are more splendid than those absorbed in this quieter France. You can go to Paris. I recommend it highly, for it is a remarkable city with its indelible stamp, and the waiters are not as rude as everyone claims. But if you seek the true France, there is no memorable stamp like a small village where the residents regard you with a mix of curiosity and modesty and then rush you to practice their English and help you improve your bad French. In the countryside surrounding Cuiseaux you can travel to the villages of St. Amour, Cousance, Louhans, Coligny, Orgelet and Maisod: places off the traditional tourist map, stone and steepled villages where the wind of civilization is distant and the song of birds immediate. My wife, Kathy, and I did precisely that, and so it was that somewhere in this countryside, we found ourselves standing in a small cemetery beside a small church, amidst a small collection of weathered headstones. We crouched together beside one and read the inscription: “Le temps passe, le souvenir reste.” Time passes, the memory remains. In Cuiseaux we stayed with Rene and Terri Peeters, for reasons too numerous to list. Rene and Terri are kind and generous and great fun, and, helpful in a place where American tourists are scarce, Rene speaks fluent French, courtesy of a Belgian father and French mother. Also, Rene is a childhood friend. And though it had been forty-some years since we had parted ways, it didn’t take five minutes in his adult company for me to remember how, when a pleasing idea occurs to Rene, his eyebrows bump, and if there is mischief involved—and in our past there often was—Rene leans forward in a conspiratorial manner and advises we take up whatever deviousness he has in mind. It was a joy to see that }}

Rene still possessed his childhood enthusiasms, paired now with an adult love of the finer things in life, namely food and wine. Keeping it short again, the mischievous friend I had known had grown up to become a worldclass chef. Having run critically acclaimed restaurants in various locales about the world, he had retired and come to Cuiseaux, where he cooks whenever he feels like it. Which is often. Not that he ever mentioned his credentials to the locals en Bourgogne. “They don’t care,” grinned Rene. “They think anyone outside of France can’t cook anyway.” As part of their B&B, Rene offers as much, or as little, as guests wish. He will cook you dinner. He will teach you how to cook dinner. He will take you wine tasting, or on a tour of the local countryside, or combine the two. And if he warms to you, or if he is your old friend and has little choice, after dinner he will play a very good guitar and sing in a surprisingly good voice that allows your own voice to be somewhat drowned out. When Kathy and I arrived in Cuiseaux in mid-June, we immediately discovered the advantage of a town with 12th-century roots. Nothing is far, and much is very, very close. And so we walked. In the dusky early morning, we walked out of the apartment and past another fine B&B, Place des Nobles, located next door and operated by friends of Renee and Terri, to Boulangerie Nico. Here, we admired the army of bread, croissants, and pastries baked daily and arranged in a presentation as breathtaking as anything you’ll see at the Musee d’Orsay. The boulangerie also proved a fine place to meet townsfolk, for, as one elderly woman put it, waving her cane just off my nose, “The French must have their bread, or they will revolt.” In a place like Cuiseaux, you must also find time to be still. Evenings, Kathy and I sat quietly on the front stoop and watched shadows creep down the stone-walled church as sparrows dropped from the eaves. At noon, when all the village rested, the same stoop afforded a view of a lone butterfly negotiating the empty town square. When it rained at noon, we listened to the patterings and pourings from bed. We also explored the Burgundy countryside beyond the villages. You should choose your own ribbon road, though I would recommend you explore the ruins of Chateau de Chevreaux in the nearby hills. We also drove past vast sunflower fields to explore the market at Louhans, where, beneath a sea of awnings, everything is for sale, from Shetland ponies to panties to the best cherries we had ever tasted. Should romance rest atop your agenda, I would also recommend a picnic in any field of your choosing. Ours was a mountaintop meadow where butterflies hopped among the yellow flowers, and the grass was soft and cool, and we exchanged sweet Louhans cherries between us without using our fingers, and then my wife fell back into the grass and stared dreamily at the sky and very softly said, “I’m dreaming we’re in France.” One afternoon we drove up into the foothills with 20

Rene and Terri to buy cheese. The, yes, narrow ribbon road ran past meadow and forest, rising and twisting, twisting and rising, until Rene stopped the car in front of a stone farm house with a cheery blue sign that read “Place Nicod.” Rene has spent his life traveling the world, and so, like any experienced traveler, he asks exactly the right question. Up went his eyebrows. “You want to see the goats that made the cheese you’re about to buy?” And so we trooped across a rolling field with Madame Clerc, a vivacious woman with muscled hands and a charming smile, who also possessed an eerie connection with her goats, for as soon as we topped a rise and became visible to her charges, their heads came up as one, and they clattered toward us with a merry bleating. The goats milled about us, vying for attention, mostly from Madame Clerc, as she alternately cooed and scolded them, for a few turned pissy, clacking their companions with their horns and muscling them away. Turning to me, Madame Clerc spoke slowly. If I am I correct in translating, what issued from her lips was a bright laugh followed by something like this. “They are like children. They stick to you like glue pots, and they will do anything stupid they can do.” Thus, I understood my own affinity for the goats. Later I learned that when Nicole and her husband go for walks, the goats follow along. It was a lovely thought, a wife and husband sharing a pastoral existence, raising children who wouldn’t tax them with college tuition, while also providing them with the yummiest cheese. For the cheese was yummy. I am no foodie, but I will tell you that the cheese we sampled in the small refrigerated room at the foot of the farmhouse was far yummier than yummy, and it tasted even better that night, properly paired with a lineup of wine bottles that sparkled in the candlelight. Upon the long wooden table, Rene had spread the wealth of the land—duck and chicken, wine and cheese, and tarts topped with just-picked raspberries from a neighbor’s garden. The meal unwound as meals are meant to: in a languid fashion now sadly lost to much of the antic world, yet still elevated to art by the French. We talked of world affairs, and books, and travels and old friends. We forked and sipped and laughed, and now and again I stole glances at the green-eyed beauty who still squeezes my heart. When the meal and the dishes were finally cleared and put away, Rene pulled out his guitar and we sang along, the words to long ago songs springing to the lips for the first time since, well, long ago. Outside, the rain pattered on the cobblestones. v PLUS D’INFORMATION WHERE TO STAY Rene and Terri Peeters’ B&B: watels.com Place des Nobles: placedesnobles.com DISCOVER Burgundy Tourism: burgundy-tourism.com

NESTING

HOUSE OF SONG One family’s path to Casa del Canto.

BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK | PHOTOS BY MARIANA SCHULZE THIS IS A LOVE STORY. Love of family, love of work, love of change. It’s a Wednesday morning, 11:15 a.m. to be exact, and almost every table in The Worker Bee Café is filled. Breakfast is served all day at the Carpinteria restaurant, and co-owner Rick Mancilla, who lives in the Ojai Valley, is buzzing around in circles. His trajectory is like a racetrack, as he moves from the front booths, whizzes past the 12-seat counter (pouring coffee refills along the way) into the kitchen, then ‘rounds the curve to the coffee stand and back again. If he wore a Fit Bit tracking device, the gregarious waiter/chief dishwasher and self-proclaimed “Dean Martin” (a.k.a. front man) of the place would probably clock

about 20 miles a morning. I dig into a half order of the killer “Potato Skin Hash,” a mash up of eggs, potato skins, and bacon with a side of sour cream, and realize the best thing you can do at the café is not be in a hurry. Instead, sit back and enjoy the jazz, blues, and quirkiness of the place. Farm eggs are available—when the hens are laying at the Mancilla’s Ventura County compound, a welcoming family house where the serial entrepreneur also bakes for the restaurant he owns with his chef son/namesake Ricky. I knew I liked Rick from our first conversation at The Worker Bee, as he raved about not only jazz, one of my passions, but also about Luca, his two-year-old grandson, who can also be spotted }}

TOP: Looking toward the western mouth of the Ojai Valley, Rick and Laura Mancilla soak up another mellow, late-afternoon view. ABOVE: On the back porch, old hats provide shelter for bird nests and hibernating frogs.

from time to time also buzzing around The Bee. Rick has had an interesting career path. A self-proclaimed “infoknowlogist” (a term he coined by melding the words ‘information’ and ‘technology’), Rick traveled a lot on business. He worked for Hughes Corporation, spent 26 years in healthcare technology and information, and started three companies when he and his family moved to California in the late-nineties. He secured $5 million in seed money for Aviant, then sold that and consulted for a tumor ablation clinic in Mississippi named Saphenia. He’s also a drummer who once played in a rock and funk band, although he prefers jazz. The saying goes that behind every successful man there is a woman. In Rick’s case, it’s Laura, his diminutive but mighty wife of almost four decades. Rick and Laura and their family moved from the East Coast to the Ojai Valley, settling into a house they named Casa del Canto (House of Song). Located high on a ridge near Oak View, the two-story, five-bedroom abode has been lovingly remodeled. A potbelly stove warms the interior, where family photos fill the walls and tabletops. Interior details include uniquely sourced fixtures: glass and chrome towel racks from Rejuvenation; vintage doorknobs and other accessories from Liz’s Hardware in L.A.; handmade, notched bookshelves and abalone tile accents in one bathroom. Outside, there’s a tree house—more of a man cave, really—where Rick keeps his drum kit, as well as spaces for lounging, barbecuing, and dining. The Mancillas, both of whom were born in Chile but raised in New Jersey, met as children at a Chilean Independence Day celebration in New York City. Laura was 12, Rick was 11. “Rick chased after me for years, but I wasn’t interested,” Laura laughed. “My brother fought him off for me— and even beat him up! He was annoying.” Eventually, though, Rick’s persistence paid off. The couple got married in 1976, as teenagers, and their love has endured. Laura inherited a keen interest in equestrianism from her Chilean father, who created the first dressage school in the U.S. and coached dressage for the U.S. Olympics and Pan Am Games. There are currently five retired horses living on the property, sharing space with a flock of freerange chickens and four (down from 10) rescue dogs. It sounds idyllic, but Laura admits, “We didn’t want to move here,” adding that they bribed their two children,

Ricky and Monique, who were in high school at the time, with California’s lower driving age, a swimming pool, and horses as incentives. Son Ricky went on to become a chef at bouchon and other fine restaurants in Santa Barbara, and ultimately approached his dad with a proposition: “Dad, let’s change our lives. Do you want to be business partners?” They threw around a few options, then one day Ricky called about a restaurant for sale in Carpinteria. It was a bigger investment than they’d planned, but the two Ricks pooled their beans and, in less than a month, purchased the old-fashioned style café. “We opened in October 2012, the same week as the Avocado Festival. I am having so much fun!” admits the reinvented 58-year-old father. “We’re not making the big bucks, but life is good.” v CASO DEL CANTO VILLA: casadecantovilla.com THE WORKER BEE: theworkerbeecafe.com

ABOVE: Custom-made beveled glass windows and antique furniture, including a circa-1900 Otto Altenburg piano, lend the front living room a vintage charm. Rather than employ an interior designer, Laura “aged” the home with myriad similar details. OPPOSITE, FROM TOP: The treehouse, a.k.a. Rick’s drum studio/office/getaway, and a poolside entrance with ironwork by Ventura-based Mares Wrought Iron. The outdoor lighting was custom-made in Mexico.

ABOUT TOWN

RISE OF THE FALCON A A Camarillo couple’s modern interpretation of an ancient art.

BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER PRINCIPAL PHOTOGRAPHY BY @PLANETMOORE

LYSSA BORDONARO ALWAYS LOVED BIRDS. Although she grew up in Antioch, a suburb in San Francisco’s East Bay, she was raised in a hunting family. “Dad used to trap birds,” she says. “And he taught me when I was young.” The falcons, hawks, and other birds of prey they’d encounter endlessly fascinated the young Bordonaro, so her father got her a book on falconry. It was from the 1800s, written in a somewhat antique style that required “a rough translation,” but Bordonaro deciphered it. “Piece by piece, I got an idea of what it meant,” she explains. “I had a kestrel and I trained it with that book as a guide.” She was 10 years old. Falconry was an interest that never wavered, even throughout high school and college. Bordonaro took her passion with her to California State University Channel Islands, where she majored in biology. “I had red tails, Cooper’s hawks, kestrels, merlins,” she explains. “I’d fly them for a season and release them in the spring.” Many of the birds she trapped in the wild (legal when in season and with proper licensing— which Bordonaro had then and now) were injured or otherwise in distress; their temporary stay in captivity was also a time for rehabilitation. }}

She met her now-husband, Mike Bordonaro, in college, and very quickly turned him on to the sport as well. “On one of our first dates she took me out with her red-tailed hawk,” he recalls. “We went out to this isolated field with a cliff. All of a sudden the bird shoots down, and Alyssa runs full sprint down this hill. I got to see firsthand what she does—it was really cool. And a great date!” The Camarillo couple has been together ever since, and falconry has been a big part of their relationship—and their career. The Bordonaros run Hawk Pros, a pest control business that operates on a completely different model from outfits that specialize in termites, cockroaches, or even vermin. Falconry is best suited to dealing with bird pests, like pigeons and seagulls, and surprisingly, most of Hawk Pros’ customers hail from urban environments: restaurants and hotels make up the bulk of their clients, most of which are located between Oxnard and Long Beach. Hawk Pros relies on two Harris’s hawks to get the job done. “Harris’s hawks are just really predictable,” Mike Bordonaro explains. And their social nature makes them easier to work with; Bordonaro finds that they are more willing to satisfy their trainers’ expectations out of a desire to please. But make no mistake: raptors of any type are not pack animals. “I best describe it as a partnership,” Bordonaro explains. “She works for me and I work for her.” Training is an ongoing exercise. “It’s not a tool you can put in the closet,” Bordonaro attests. Surprisingly, though, it takes only about a month for Bordonaro to get a bird ready to take in the field. Using raptors for pest abatement relies on deterrence rather than removal. Hawks and falcons don’t consume pests (except for the occasional catch); their very presence is terrifying to the birds that in the wild would serve as their prey. Prey birds clear out if they suspect they’re on the menu. “The hawk sets a perimeter,” Bordonaro explains. “And the falconer is kind of the choreographer. … We start off with an aggressive schedule, going out three to five days a week.” This helps the hawk establish a consistent presence; visits are less frequent once the resident bird population knows a predator habitually visits the area. Why do clients consider falconry as an option for pest control? Frankly, because they are desperate. “They come to us last, after everything else has failed,” Bordonaro admits. “They’re willing to try anything—and it works. They have to see it for themselves to believe it.” Pigeons and seagulls are common pest problems, of course, but swallows can be troublesome for a business as well, due to the nests they build, which can deface buildings, and their droppings, which are messy and unsani-

tary. “We get asked about swallows, because they make a big mess, but they’re protected and it’s hard to deter them—they know they can outfly a falcon or hawk. Coots live on golf courses, and can number in the thousands. They’ll decimate a golf course. You need to obtain a special permit [to control them].” Even with several trips to clients, daily training and flying (anywhere from 30 minutes to 12 hours, depending on the birds’ particular needs), caring for two children (four-year-old Ayla and one-year-old Hunter), and the occasional raptor presentation at local schools and such, the Bordonaros still find time to practice personal falconry. “I enjoy watching her fly, and her graces,” Bordonaro says of her Alpomado falcon, named Esperanza. “I don’t do it for the kill; I enjoy experiencing their wild life.” And she appreciates the problemsolving aspects that caring and training birds presents, both on and off the job. “It’s almost like a puzzle, like people who do Sudoku or crosswords. You’re figuring out how to get the most out of your falcon. From the time of day to what side of the field you enter on to where you flush game, there are a lot of factors.” Hawk Pros continues to see their client list grow, and expects that the company will, too. They’re already looking into acquiring more hawks, and have considered taking on another experienced falconer. “But we don’t want it to get huge,” Bordonaro is quick to clarify. “A lot of people [in this business] just see the dollar signs. That doesn’t foster an appreciation for the birds. I want them to have a nice life, and to treat them well.” Their feathered assistants in pest control aren’t just business partners; they’re a part of the family. Once you’ve taken them under your wing, it’s a relationship that needs to be honored. v

ABOVE: The Hawk Pros put a modern spin on the ancient art of falconry, using raptors to control pigeons, seagulls, and other bird pests. Alyssa Bordonaro, seen here with her Aplomado falcon, began the practice at age 10. Falconry dates to around 2,000 BC. INSET: The Bordonaro’s male Harris’ Hawk, Gunner, in his juvenile plumage.

SHORT LIST ERYN TALEVICH: CULTURE/COUTURE

Through February 21 | Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts Eryn Talevich explores the relationship between humans and clothing: how it reflects identity, perspective, and values. Clothing has grown from a necessity of survival to an expression of identity. The works in this exhibition celebrate the lives of Beatrice Wood and her contemporaries—what they consciously wore, their personal styles, and legacies. 8585 Ojai-Santa Paula Rd., Ojai. For more information, visit beatricewood.com.

BLACK COMEDY

Through February 14 | Ojai Art Center Theater The power fails but the laughs never do in this “veritable detonation of human glee” from the pen of Peter Shaffer and directed by Richard Camp. Beginning on a darkened stage, the action is illuminated while eight hilarious actors playfully deal with stolen kisses, pilfered furniture, an open trap door, and a deadly sculpture. 113 S. Montgomery Ave., Ojai. For more information, visit ojaiact.org.

“...AND YET, THINGS CONTINUE TO UNFOLD.”

February 5 – 27 | 643 Project Space Utilizing illusionistic painting, Erika Lizée reimagines the surfaces of the gallery walls with real and metaphorical dividing lines to explore phenomena that were once considered inexplicable or magical but are continually redefined by scientific discovery. Through her work, Lizée seeks to express the conflicting feelings of wonder and uncertainty when contemplating the fluid and impermanent nature of reality. There will be an opening reception February 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. 643 Ventura Ave., Ventura. For more information, visit 643projectspace.com.

NATURE INSPIRED: THE PAINTINGS OF SHERRY LOEHR

February 6 – June 12 | Santa Paula Art Museum This exhibition features a stunning array of paintings by awardwinning Ojai artist Sherry Loehr. Inspired by nature, Loehr’s work explores a world guided by imagination and intuition, and brought to life through her signature improvisation with color and texture. Largely self-taught, Sherry portrays her subjects with a disciplined Old Masters approach to still life. The exhibition will premiere with a reception on Saturday, February 6 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Admission to the reception is $10 for museum members, $15 for the general public. 117 N. 10th St., Santa Paula. BAUBLES, BANGLES & BRIGHT SHINY BEADS

February 6 | Brooks Institute, Ventura When does jewelry become art? Is important jewelry made only with precious metals and gems? How does jewelry transform the wearer? These and other questions will be explored as Mary Galbraith visits with Jo Ellen Lee and Elaine Unzicker. Jo Ellen earned a Ph.D. in Medical Genetics and worked for many years in genetics laboratories. She took up beading in 1993 and it was soon evident that her precise, careful work and superb color sense took her beaded art pieces and jewelry to high levels of excellence. Elaine, a member of the Ojai Studio Artists, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Master of Science in Art and Master of Fine Art. Her specialty is working with chain mail, a material that is tantalizingly soft and hard at the same time. This event is presented by Focus on the Masters. 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. 5301 N. Ventura Ave., Ventura. For more information, visit focusonthemasters.com.

ELEGANTÉ It’s one of my favorite designs. The gleam of the high polish contrasting against the satin texture in-between. It's funny how sometimes what seems like such a simple design takes so much more thinking to get it to be just right. I went through 14 iterations before I got all the lines to harmonize and flow. ELEGANTÉ is available in White or Yellow Gold as shown. The center gem can accommodate a round Diamond or gem of 1 carat or larger. It can also hold a cushion or oval shape gem starting at 1.2 carats. This would be a marvelous ring for your Diamond. Or pick from our selection of Diamonds and colored gemstones. Available as a mounting from $1350, depending on the size of the gem and your choice of Gold.
