EDITOR’S NOTE

MICHAEL MONTANO

THE AMERICAN WAY

J

ust how many editorial gems are buried in obscure corners of Ventura County? What with our proximity to Hollywood and the cosmopolitan stew of Los Angeles, this relatively quiet slice of California holds secrets aplenty. Case in point: Tom Kelley Studio (cover + p. 15), the county’s largest photo studio and a second-generation trove of Hollywood memorabilia tucked into a garden-variety industrial park. Its files overflow with classic portraits of mid-century megastars like Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, and James Cagney. Props include storied antiques and custom-painted Hollywood backdrops, though Tom Kelley Jr., who took the helm from his father in the early ‘80s, has pulled away from a 21st-century movie studio system he describes as impenetrably thick with restrictions and “lawyerly” threats. These days, Tom Jr. focuses on advertising and illustration photography. But the ghosts of Old Hollywood remain. Among the studio’s most captivating images—a red velvet fantasy that Norman Mailer called “breathtakingly beautiful,” and that lodged itself into the memory bank of our art director, leading to this article—is a 1948 nude photo of an out-of-work actress named Marilyn Monroe. Five years later, the shot became the first Playboy centerfold. It is but one of the many highlights in a largely unseen archive of photographs by “the godfather of pinup,” and one of the most viewed nudes in history. While the elder Kelley passed away in 1984, Nancy Shaffer’s article dips into his backstory before tracing the evolutionary arc of both Hollywood and professional photography into 2016. Both, it seems, have lost some of their shine. But that’s how things go. Everything from careers

to larger-than-life institutions morph over the years. The upwardly mobile shift gears to match the flow. Self-determination. Creativity. These have always been key elements of the sort of American ingenuity that set this country ablaze. A slow climb up the company ladder is no longer the accepted career path. Structural change is afoot, and it’s not just impacting the Millennial Generation. Take, for example, Mike and Chris Brown (p. 25), who realized that “corporate America wasn’t going to take care of [them]” and created Cantara Cellars, shaping their own destiny as a husband-and-wife vintner (and soon to be brewer, as the evolution continues) team. Like the Tom Kelley Studio story, this one has multi-generational connections. While the wine is made in Camarillo, the grapes come from Lodi, in Northern California, where Mike’s family has lived since 1847 and some 110,000 acres are covered in vines. His parents currently manage 28 acres of premium Chardonnay on land that was once his grandparents’ farm. More than ever, workers seem to be looking for an aspect of personal fulfillment from their jobs. Lifestyle businesses are booming. Workplace flexibility has taken priority over pay for many employees, and the security of a corporate position doesn’t feel quite as secure as it used to. The story of the Browns creating their own retirement plan rather than banking on a shaky 401(k) is not uncommon. A gig economy is on the rise. As the Great Recession fades, the workplace landscape continues to shift, with a growing number of people taking it upon themselves to build a better future. And that is the true pursuit of the American Dream. – Matt Katz mattk@ventanamonthly.com

THE HERBALIST

Ojai’s Stacey Moss blends science and intuition to create organic, plant-based aromas that honor the source. BY AMELIA FLEETWOOD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIANA SCHULZE

“PLANTS ARE MY PASSION,” says Stacey Moss, the creator of Moss Botanicals, an Ojai-based essential oil business. She is both perfectionist and purist, melding sustainability with her Native American heritage of honoring the earth. While synthetics and chemicals flood the perfume market, Stacey opts instead for all-natural ingredients, blending them into fine aroma mists and body oils. Launched in 2007, Moss Botanicals offers unique oil blends with soothing, evocative names like “Transform,” “Relax,” and “Calm Heart.” She even created a special “Ojai Blend” in honor of her hometown. The blends are designed to foster emotional, spiritual, and physical wellbeing, and each scent evokes a distinct mood. Stacey, who attended the College of Botanical Healing Arts for Aromatherapy in Santa Cruz, has a history as a healer and maker of home remedies, particularly plant-based medicines. But smell, she says, is the “most powerful and primitive sense we have. When people breathe things in, it … helps in the creation of an earth-consciousness, which is so important for me to share.” A believer in the power of simplicity, Stacey uses only the bare essences of plants while drawing on and integrating her Native American sensibilities. She hand-blends and pours every batch of oil, and grows and distills many of her own plants: hummingbird sage, mugwort, rosemary. “Distillation is an art very much like making wine,” she says. “Batches can differ slightly from year to year, but the medicinal and therapeutic qualities will remain constant.” For plants not readily available in the local area, she relies on other small companies that share her passion for sustainability and quality. She is careful not to employ any essential oils that appear on the endangered or rare list, avoiding scarce, overused Indian sandalwood, for example, and instead opting for a more abundant strain from Australia. Indeed, Stacey makes earth-conscious decisions whenever possible and holds the plants themselves in the highest regard. “There is so much to learn from plants, and so many ways to use the oils,” she explains. “I’m always excited to give the plants a platform to communicate their knowledge to us.” v

Photographer Tom Kelley Sr. put a shine on the tinsel during Hollywood’s mid-century heyday. For the past 25 years in Ventura, his son has carried the torch. But who’s next? And what will become of the family’s collection of iconic pop-culture images?

BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN “NOT MANY STUDIOS THIS SIZE ARE LEFT,” says Tom Kelley Jr., walking around his place of business on Eastman Avenue, in Ventura’s industrial zone. “Most photographers can’t afford the space.” Two 7,000-square-foot studios with 20-foot ceilings are filled with lights, cameras, and other equipment; props from almost every era imaginable; and one of the largest stock libraries in the area. It’s an impressive array, and a testament to a career that has spanned decades. Tom Kelley Studio got its start during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Founder Tom Kelley Senior (his son has taken over the family business) was one of the most important photographers working for the studios during this heyday of the film industry, and his work did much to enhance Hollywood’s glamorous image throughout the 1940s and 1950s. Kelley was born and raised in Philadelphia, and moved to New York City as a young man to apprentice with a photographer. Once he started

taking his own pictures, he found work first with the Associated Press and later Town and Country. “He was more of a thinker or a creative kind of guy,” Tom Jr. says of his father. “That led him to magazines, and ultimately Hollywood.” Wintering in Arizona and California was common amongst wealthy families at the time, and Kelley’s society page gigs often took him out west. The movie industry in those days was undergoing a sound and color revolution, and Kelley sensed the excitement…and the potential. He moved to Los Angeles in 1935, eventually opening Tom Kelley Studio just off Melrose Avenue (in 1950, it moved to West Hollywood). This was a propitious time for both the movie industry and the photographer, and it was a mutually beneficial relationship. Samuel Goldwyn and }}

copyrights…It’s gotten more lawyerly. I don’t work in Hollywood much anymore.” In 1990, Tom Kelley Studio moved to its current location in Ventura. Most work today comes from advertising and the music industry. The studio did the image for the Little Friskies Cat Food box—recognized by the cat licking its chops—and several album covers. The younger Kelley is a favorite of the Eagles, for example. “When you work with someone for 30 years, I guess they trust you,” Tom Jr. notes with a chuckle. A fun fatherson collaboration photographing dolls for the book “A Century of Dolls” led to work in calendars. It’s less glamorous than the film industry, but in some ways more creative. “It’s kind of like a workshop,” he says. “I take projects that interest me.” Tom Kelley Jr. himself is (slowly) moving towards retirement, and as of now he’s not sure who, if anyone, will take the baton next. Admittedly, there are some big shoes to fill. In addition to a large, fully equipped photo-factory,

the studio boasts an archive that could take its place alongside holdings at UCLA or even the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Thousands of original prints, many in pristine condition, serve as photographic documentation of Hollywood and pop culture through the postWWII decades. When Tom Kelley Studio closes its doors, where will all these amazing images go? Tom Jr. isn’t sure. “But I would love to see it preserved.” v

PROFILE

David O. Selznick retained Kelley to take promotional shots of performers like Greta Garbo, Lana Turner, Clark Gable, Bob Hope, and Carole Lombard. One of his first clients was a young Swedish actress named Ingrid Bergman, who was making her American debut. “They weren’t big names yet,” Tom Jr. explains. “They were the upand-comers that people like David Selznick wanted to promote.” It was a winning strategy. Kelley’s artistic vision and technical mastery lent these legends-to-be in front of his camera a certain allure that helped transform actors into stars. It was during this time that Kelley shot what has become his most famous portrait: a nude of Marilyn Monroe used as the first Playboy centerfold when the magazine debuted in 1953. The starlet, practically unknown at the time, is shown in all her sensuous glory on a rich red background, all curves and luminous skin and coquettish, beckoning glance. In this single image, Kelley captured much of the essence of Monroe’s appeal that would shortly make her a star—and maintain her legacy as a pop culture icon. Kelley continued to do pin-up-style nudes until the 1970s (a compilation, “Tom Kelley’s Studio,” came out last year) and while their artistry is undeniable, none are quite as arresting or memorable as Marilyn. Between studio and advertising contracts (much of Kelley’s work involved celebrity endorsements), the studio did brisk business throughout the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. His son, Tom Jr., began haunting the studio as well. “He was busy working, so it was his other assistants who showed me how to load film, operate a dark room, etc.” Tom Jr. learned from the likes of George Hurrell and Helmut Newton, and became every bit as skilled and passionate as his father. In the 1980s, when ailing health forced Kelley to take a step back, Tom Jr. began running the studio. His father died in 1984. By that time, the movie studio system had given way to a different model. “In the early days we had access to all the celebrities,” Tom Jr. recalls. “Jack Benny, he’d just walk through the door. That’s not true anymore. When you work with someone recognizable now, you have restrictions on what you can do with the image, there are

TABLE TALK

STAGES OF MATURITY

Following a long-term business plan, Camarillo vintners Mike and Chris Brown continue to evolve alongside the local wine industry. BY MARK STORER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL MOORE

MIKE AND CHRIS BROWN OFTEN FIND THEMSELVES at the end of long days enjoying the fruits of their labor—literally. Sipping golden glasses of Chardonnay at their Moorpark home and going over the day’s peaks and valleys, only stopping to consider whether the vintage they’re drinking meets their exacting expectations. After all, they made the wine in their Camarillo winery, Cantara Cellars. And that fact leads to all kinds of speculation. Words like “luck” and clichés like “following your passion” are commonplace around startup winemakers. But while there is some passion involved, luck, as entrepreneurs like to say, is for rabbits. “We picked this business,” said Mike. “We discussed what kind of business we wanted to create and maybe retire in. We knew that corporate

Winemaker and co-owner Mike Brown.

America wasn’t going to take care of us, so this was kind of the long-term plan.” Since they sold their first vintage in bottles in 2005, the Browns have increased production to about 2,500 cases a year, including a number of varietals and blends for the Cantara Cellars label. They also store wine in barrels and do custom crush for a few other wineries. “We have six clients we make wine for,” said Chris. “We’ve had a couple of Ventura County wineries move out on their own, and it’s a treat to watch them fly.” Magnavino Cellars in Oxnard, Back Patio Cellars in Camarillo, and Plan B Wine Cellars in Ventura all got their start at the Cantara facility, which has acted as a kind of wine business incubator. While they weren’t the first winemakers in Ventura County, or the }}

most well known, they were at the forefront of a surge that now comprises more than 20 wineries from Thousand Oaks to Ojai. All of Cantara Cellars’ fruit comes from Lodi, one of the largest winegrowing regions in the world with 110,000 acres under vines. Mike grew up in the Northern California town, and his mom still lives on vineyard land where she grows the Chardonnay grapes the Browns use. Several times a year, more during harvest season, Mike and Chris travel to Lodi and spend time with the growers before hauling grapes back to Camarillo. The couple both have backgrounds in manufacturing, and Mike still keeps his day job at Little Castle, a furniture manufacturer in Oxnard, while Chris and the couple’s son, Jesse, work full-time at the winery along with two part-time employees. That manufacturing background is bedrock for the couple as winemakers. “A wine club member buys a case over a year and they’re having your wine maybe months apart from each bottle,” said Mike. “Every time, you’re being judged. So consistency is important.” Call winemaking art if you’d like, and if it helps you appreciate the finer points of a glass. But before wine is art it has to be crafted and standardized to produce consistent results. It’s hard work. From the beginning, the Browns wanted to make wine that both aged well and is ready to drink, and they’ve achieved that. All of their wines now sit in the barrel for three years before bottling, giving them the character the Browns desire, including lower alcohol levels, specific taste characteristics, and true consistency. “We have wine that is bottled and in the cellar for three to six months before we sell it,” said Mike. “It makes it more uniform, and we can get that consistency we want.” But that, too, took time. It wasn’t until 2010 when the Browns were able to keep wine in barrels longer as they slowly ramped up production and made more wine so they could release some and store some. It was all part of the plan, of course. Hearing the Browns tell it, the Cantara Cellars business plan is akin to the Constitution: a document that guides the couple’s decisions years into the future. “It’s not a business for the faint of heart,” said Mike. “It’s not a fast way to make money. This is work, but it is a fun product and that’s what people see.” From Thursday through Sunday each week, 95 percent of Cantara Cellars’ business is out its own front door as customers come in to taste and see. “For the first five years, we didn’t take vacations; there was no time off,” said Chris. “It was seven days a week. It’s what it takes to get any business off the ground.” Chris was laid off from her day job in 2009, and while that was stressful, it allowed her to focus on the winery full time. “I never have to worry about losing my job again,” she said. “Mike and I knew we could work together, too, which isn’t something all couples can do. We work great together.” They’ve had to. The Browns have put four children through college and were doing that at the time they opened the winery. Beyond the great wines they produce, it is worth going to the winery to have a glass, get a plate of cheese and meat, and see a married couple work so well together. “The winery had to evolve based on the money we could put in at each interval,” said Mike. “We put 10 percent in marketing, but we’ve even seen that change with social media. We focused on pouring events and getting our name out there.” Chris is also president of the Meadowlark League in Camarillo this year, and has been actively involved in both Camarillo’s and Thousand Oaks’ chambers of commerce. “Getting involved in the community is one of the greatest things I do,” she said. “I love that aspect of it. It makes what we do feel more like home, like a local business.” Cantara Cellars was originally one of the founding wineries of the Ventura County Wine Trail, an association of local wineries working together to drive tourism, but they dropped their membership this year. “We weren’t getting the bang for our buck for marketing dollars,” said Chris. }}

Mike Brown, Chris Brown, and Jesse Johnson at Cantara Cellars, Camarillo.

The Browns maintain their membership in the Ventura County Vintner’s Association, and Chris said all the members believe their growth is tied together. “We think people in the county are just now starting to get how important wineries can be to the area’s economic growth. The lights have just started to go on,” she said. “But we need to get to something like 50 or 60 wineries in the county before that really would change things, so it’s another long-term plan.” Long-term planning is what winemakers have to do if they want a future. The old joke is that if you want to make a million dollars in the wine business, start with $20 million. But start-up wineries aren’t $20 million companies. So, it’s thinking smaller—

but more long-term. “We started the planning for this in 1996 and pulled the trigger financially in 2005,” said Mike. “This wasn’t a spur of the moment decision. We spent four or five years researching the process, going to wineries, and figuring out points of sale and retail. In the big picture perspective, it isn’t the kind of business that requires an immediate decision. Nothing really has to happen right now—there is time to consider each decision. We think about where this goes years from now.” They’re not stopping at wine, either. Next up for the Browns is Cantara Brewing. Much like how the couple began making wine in their home and converted to a winery, so too have they been mak-

ing beer and are about to take the next logical step. They’ve already expanded their Wood Road industrial site to make way for a tasting room, and while the brewery is still in the planning stages, the winery continues to attract customers and fans 10 years after releasing its first vintage. It is the 21st-century retirement plan, but it’s nothing new—and it is proof that there is life after retirement. Indeed, there’s more life there than before it. v For more info, visit cantaracellars.com or call 805.484.9600.

SWEAT EQUITY An all-inclusive luxury resort provides an antidote to holiday weight gain—and tools to manage health and wellbeing all year long. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK

D

on’t you just hate that old pant zipper trick? The one where it won’t… quite… zip up? Much to my dismay, I recently gained five pounds, and I feared adding to the scale/my girth over the winter holidays. Tempting platters of cheese, crackers, and cookies would soon be waved under my nose, but I was hoping to release my gain to the universe. Or at least hold my own. So, right after Thanksgiving, I made a quick visit to a wellness camp to get a jumpstart on any weight-related New Year’s resolutions. VeraVia (Latin for “true path”) proved to be an amazing, effective “fitness, health, and wellbeing” retreat, located just a couple hours away in North County San Diego’s Carlsbad. Wellness encompasses the mind, body, and spirit – VeraVia’s holistic approach addresses all three with medical assessments and meetings with various experts in their fields, including a naturopathic doctor, fitness experts, and a nutritionist, topped off with fitness classes, yoga, meditation, and fresh, organic cuisine. Redefining each client’s relationship to food (including mental and psychological levels) and providing tools and strategies for the prevention of diseases and sports injury while getting fit is all part of the program. Everything is truly personalized, with the goal of helping guests achieve their “optimal self” via training and new skills that can be used for the rest of their lives. I didn’t know quite what to expect during my brief yet effective stay, as I would not receive my itinerary until the day of my arrival. A warm welcome in the grand lobby of the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort by two of VeraVia’s terrific team members, Adrienne and Jacqueline, included a tour of the facilities that would be my home for the next three nights. In addition to a spacious guestroom, there were inviting pools, a Jacuzzi, and a fitness center and spa. A review of my daily itinerary revealed a full schedule ahead, with days beginning at 6 or 7 a.m. and ending with dinner at 6 p.m. My first evening was spent over a lovely din-

ner with another female guest who had also just checked into the program hoping to not only lose weight, but also de-stress. No bread, no butter or olive oil or salt on the table. No honey for her tea. But there was anti-inflammatory turmeric and pepper and chia seeds: the benefits would be explained later by VeraVia’s nutritionist. Each meal began with a “shot” of apple cider vinegar to stimulate digestion and balance blood sugar. Dinner was a lovely salad and an entrée of halibut served over a puree of celery root, with two stalks of jumbo asparagus. No need to hold the dessert. There wasn’t any! Two other guests were in residence, a Californian businessman and a New Yorker who works in the stressful financial sector. All four of us were committed to losing weight and getting fitter. I had enrolled in VeraVia’s three-day Express package; the other’s stays ranged from one week to one month or longer. And so far, they had each “released” a pound a day. The first day of my itinerary went something like this: 7:30 a.m. start with orientation and fitness assessments. Erkan, my wonderful fitness guru, told me my goal was to practice not holding my breath and to exhale when exerting energy. This was to be remembered during all our fitness classes, from core to weights to yoga. My fitness “assessment” included squats, a mile on a treadmill, and pushups. We were all at different levels, with me being the slow poke in the group. Lunch was chicken salad with grapes and blueberries; dinner was fish, kale, and lentils. Dr.Derek, the house naturopath, spoke to us about genetics in his Foundations of Health workshop. “Genes are not your fate,” he said, which was encouraging, citing epigenetics. A behavioral health workshop, led by Natasha, was informative, and Megan Lewis, director of the behavioral health program, told me during a private session that the longer a guest stays, “the deeper she goes.” Nutritionist Cat (who designed all our tasty meals) imparted great information and advice during }}

our one-on-one consultation, as well as great tips to help with my insomnia—including staying off the computer for an hour-and-ahalf before going to bed and unplugging my Wi-Fi router. On the second day, a highlight was an early morning fourand-a-half-mile hike that included a challenging climb up Mount Calavera, a 22 million-year-old volcanic plug, one of just three in Southern California. I never in 22 million years imagined I could accomplish this feat: the equivalent of 34 stories, 28 of them at an 80 percent angle. Thanks to the gentle guidance, encouragement, and helping hands from hiking guides Evan and Erkan, five of us scaled to the top, where one colleague’s phone app revealed our accomplishment. Rewarded with sweeping views, we shared our sense of accomplishment at overcoming not only physical, but emotional fears. Did I mention that breakfast (after our hike) consisted of scrambled egg whites and asparagus followed by smoked salmon with apple on gluten-free bread with goat cheese? VeraVia Founders are Wyatt Chapman, an award-winning architect who oversaw a $4.2 billion dollar company, and his wife, Melissa Chapman, who owns and runs a huge antiques showroom in downtown San Diego. The couple went seeking help for their own stress and health issues at various “boot camps” where they would lose weight but return to old habits once they got home. “There was shame. We had no behavioral change, nor a medical component,” Melissa admitted. So the couple “dreamt up a magical place,“ Melissa told me. “We wanted to be in an elegant place, get

results, have medical and educational components… and we wanted it to be fun!” They created VeraVia two years ago, to fill in the gaps and provide a really important aspect that helps accountability when guests leave the VeraVia program: an online alumni portal and follow-up emails and phone calls with the staff to stay on track. Groups are intentionally kept small (usually no more than five guests at a time) and programs are tailored to each individual. Despite being costly, approximately $1,000 per day, it is a good value considering all the personal attention in classes, private meetings with the behavioral therapist, nutritionist, and others, all meals, and luxury accommodations, not to mention the follow-up and life skills gained when you leave. I just checked in for the VeraVia Express program to get a kick-start on my end of the year/new year fitness and health program, and to acquire new tools to take home with me. But I gained more than that. I “released” a pound the first day, and continued to do so even when I got home. At the time of this writing (the height of holiday season temptations), I not only ”released” the five pounds I’d recently gained, but felt like pushing myself harder in my fitness regime. Best of all? I made a really nice new friend, Cassie, with whom I trade texts and support as we chase our respective fitness goals, an unexpected bonus to VeraVia’s great program. v For information on VeraVia, an all-inclusive luxury weight loss resort, go to veraviafit.com or call 1.800.527.1936.

SHORT LIST DUETS: ART & ARTISANS IN HARMONY

Through March 13 | Museum of Ventura County The Museum of Ventura County presents “Duets: Art and Artisans in Harmony,” an exhibit that celebrates and showcases the work of remarkable local craftsmen. Works from local artisans such as Tom Anderson, Peter Boles, Fletcher Brock, Eilam Byle, David Eichelbaum, Jean Larrivé, Jim McCarthy, Tony Moraza, David Salais, Marston Smith, Joe Till, and James Wimmer take visitors through the artistry and design of music. Also included are instruments from the RKS Design and Drum Workshop in Oxnard. The exhibit will discuss their place in the context of instrument making along with their inspiration. Works of fine art from the Museum’s collection will be paired with the instruments in a thematic and complementary way. 100 E. Main St., Ventura. For more information, visit venturamuseum.org.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Through February 21 | Carnegie Art Museum, Oxnard Our environment is strongly impacted by the earth’s relentlessly evolving weather conditions and manmade stimuli. This exhibit shows how artists have reproduced, commented on, and critiqued our ever-changing environment, whether the result of nature’s forces or human interventions. It brings together different approaches to the subject both formal and conceptual. Curated by Billie Milam Weisman, director of the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, and generously funded by the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation. 424 South C St., Oxnard. For more information, visit carnegieam.org.

THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES

January 8–20 | Conejo Valley Players, Thousand Oaks Join Sherlock Holmes for his most spine-chilling mystery. Sir Henry is heir to the vast Baskerville fortune, a legacy that comes with a family curse: death at the fangs of a horror that prowls the moor! Only Holmes can stop the beast. While mysterious lights signal Baskerville Hall and the hound terrifies the countryside, the sleuthing begins and suspicion abounds. By Tim Kelly and based on the story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Presented through special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. 351 S. Moorpark Rd., Thousand Oaks. For more information, visit conejoplayers.org.

PAINTING IN THE LIGHT

January 9–February 3 | Ojai Art Center Brightening the dark days of winter, a new show by visionary artist Joyce Huntington, “Painting in the Light,” will fill the Ojai Art Center. A reception for the artist will take place on January 16, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Huntington spent most of her childhood in the desert southwest. A precocious, dance-obsessed child, she faced a near-death bout with polio, which left her confined to a wheelchair. No longer able to dance, her creative spirit found new expression in painting. She has since dedicated her life to bringing feelings of peace, healing, and inspiration to others through her artwork, which springs from visions she receives in meditation. 113 S. Montgomery St., Ojai. For more information, call 805.646.0117.

Reimagine A Classic

This two-row ring in 18K Yellow Gold and precision cut Pink Sapphires was designed for a special lady. Sculpted with only curved surfaces; some positive curves, some negative curves, but all of them curves. Hers was the first of a limited edition available in Pink or Blue Sapphire, Ruby, and/or Diamond. A man’s version of the ring will be available. Each ring will be built for someone original enough to wear it.
