EDITOR’S NOTE

SITTING QUIETLY, DOING NOTHING

O

ne afternoon in mid-April, I found myself sitting atop a rock on a Ventura County beach coordinating an interview between a local writer and an American Buddhist monk on layover in Delhi as he traveled from his home in the Himalayan foothills, near the Tibetan border, to Oxford, England. Thanks to the modern magic of Skype and a smartphone that didn’t exist when I started editing this publication in 2007, there was no need for me rush to the office; this rock was my desk. Crashing waves and raucous gulls replaced water-cooler conversation as our pings flew through cyberspace, and no one cared that I was barefoot. Indeed, digital media and the Internet have transformed the way we work. And in many ways, it is quite nice (see above). But the tools we’ve developed at such a rapid-fire pace in recent years have put us in an awkward position. Remember when sitting on a rock meant just that? Sitting. On a rock. My iPhone is beginning to feel like a super-connected weight that makes “sitting quietly, doing nothing,” as the old Zen proverb begins, virtually impossible. The rocket ships and TV dinners of mid-century America got us all fired up on technology, but God knows we’ve choked down enough Salisbury steak and peas to know that mediocre food blasted into a flash-freeze with liquid nitrogen is no substitute for a fresh, home-cooked meal. I’m starting to think we’ve reached the saturation point. And apparently I’m not alone. Across the nation, people of all stripes and ages—not just hipsters and hippies—are rusticating: getting back to basics, particularly when it comes to wholesome food. On page 35, we visit a spoonful (this is not a comprehensive list) of local groups and individuals dedicated to a healthy, natural lifestyle and connecting others with their food sources. Then there’s Darla Hoffman (cover + pg. 21), who’s on to

some next-level fitness—the sort of fit you just don’t get without a lot of hard work. And lest you think her path is all about vanity, bear in mind that this 35-year-old mother of two not only overcame her own insecurities about body image, but has dedicated herself professionally to helping others feel “happier and more confident” by reaching their fitness goals. But back to that rock: I’m not suggesting we’ve hit a technological peak and are now sliding back to the Stone Age whistling the Green Acres theme song. In fact, I’m more inclined to believe author Marshall McLuhan’s theory that humans are essentially the “sex organs of the machine world.” That as we perpetually look for new ways to modify technology, we are in turn modified by that technology. It’s just happened blindingly fast. We find ourselves suddenly plunged into an age of planetwide interconnectedness and virtually infinite knowledge, thanks to the Internet—our baby, which we birthed and are now nurturing as part of our natural, organic evolution. In our interview with the American Buddhist monk I mentioned above, Dr. Barry Kerzin (pg. 11) addresses the health benefits of periodically emptying one’s mind. A former Ventura County physician, Kerzin is now one of the world’s foremost experts on the mind-body connection, not to mention a personal physician of the Dalai Lama. I’m not sure I’ll attend his upcoming lecture or meditation workshops, but I do believe it’s more important now than ever before to occasionally unplug—literally and figuratively. That’s easier said than done, of course. But the next time I sit quietly on a rock, I’m leaving my phone in the car.

CONVERSATION

EMOTIONAL HYGIENE Dr. Barry Kerzin on meditation and the mind-body relationship. BY MARK STORER

IT IS A LONG WAY FROM VENTURA COUNTY MEDICAL Center to the foothills of the Himalayas, where Dr. Barry Kerzin now lives. The former Ventura County family practice physician followed the road less traveled when he met the Dalai Lama in 1989. Kerzin, who also taught at the University of Washington for many years and is the founder of the Altruism in Medicine Institute (altruismmedicine.org), was at a gathering of the Mind and Life Institute in Newport Beach. “I was able to meet His Holiness for the first time, and I told him I wanted to do a Buddhist retreat on this idea of emptiness, of releasing the mind,” Kerzin said. The notion of emptiness is Buddhist wisdom that in order to find peace, one must empty one’s self of all negative emotions and thoughts and other obstacles that might block meditation. “He looked at me and pointed a finger and very sternly said, ‘Emptiness and Bodhicitta, fifty-fifty!’” Bodhicitta is the full form of compassion in Buddhism, sometimes called universal or unconditional

compassion. Since that time, Kerzin was ordained a Buddhist monk by His Holiness and has served for the past decade or so as the Dalai Lama’s personal physician. It’s not a full-time job, however, and Kerzin, who also teaches at the University of Hong Kong and travels the world speaking about meditation and the relationship between mind and body, has dedicated his life to something beyond practicing medicine. Kerzin will return to Ventura County in July to give several talks and lead workshops on mind and body harmony. On July 17, he will speak at Samuelson Chapel at California Lutheran University on the subject of consciousness and its relation to mind and body, comparing modern science to Buddhist science of the mind, or Buddhist psychology of emotions. Following the public talk, Dr. Kerzin will lead four one-day meditation workshops (July 18, 19, 25, 26). We caught up with Kerzin while he was in the U.K., speaking at the }} University of Oxford. Where do you call home these days? India’s been home for 26 years. I live in Dharamsala, about 5000 feet above sea level in the foothills of the Himalayas, near the Tibetan border. Does the “mind-body relationship” refer simply to attitude and its impact on our bodies? You’ve said that research shows this to be true. Many of us believe it and don’t need the research. But there’s now a lot of good research to show that there is in fact an intimate relationship between the brain and the body. When I say the mind, we’re talking about emotions—and those emotions have a profound impact on our health. You hardly meet a person who doesn’t have anxiety these days. From a very common sense standpoint, we can say that we all suffer at times from imbalance of some kind. If we address that imbalance, it has a positive and healing effect on our bodies. Does that require committing one’s life to Buddhism to find that peace? A lot of what we do is begin with the premise that peace and happiness starts at home, starts inside us. It’s not easy to do that, of course. But if we work on ourselves, then we can bring it to the world. It’s the notion that change begins in us, not externally, not outside of us. That’s something everyone can understand and do. What do inner peace and happiness look like? I don’t know. I think you have to ask someone like His Holiness. But I guess that it’s rather like the idle speed in a car at a stoplight. So many people have so much stress, anxiety at their idle speed. To be free of that stuff so you don’t have fear or anxiety about the past or the future, or to at least be able to minimize it, is really the goal. Once you are able to do that, peace comes easier. So, it’s about control? This approach is not saying that you completely ignore your future or your past. It’s more about you controlling your emotions, so that you can turn that stuff off and you can rest and feel whole. It becomes a matter of choice, then, so that when you want to plan for the future or look at the past, you can do so with a clear mind. American culture can be tough on people who choose not to run the rat race. It tends to reward those who hurry and rush. How can that be addressed? So many people are turning to a slower lifestyle, or even just turning to nature or music, or just something

where they can live in the moment and experience that tranquility. Many of the great spiritual masters spent a good part of their lives in nature. They found a place where they can go deeper in their minds and release that stress, anxiety, and fear. Nature is a great outlet for that because it helps you feel and understand your place, and gives you the quiet to ease you into your own mind, your own body. And that’s something that can be taught? A lot of scientists are researching that question: Can it be taught? People who meditate were studied, and researchers showed that meditation actually provides structural change to the pre-frontal cortex and increases blood flow in the brain. In EEG studies of long-term meditators, there are bursts of gamma waves that are high amplitude, and it was thought that it had something to do with facial muscles or even seizures, but these people weren’t seizing. The current thinking now is that it means some sort of harmony, a synchronicity between the body and brain—as though everything is being orchestrated in a very smooth way. You also referred to studies on people who have only meditated for a short time. Yes, the question was, ‘Can we find some changes in people who were taught to meditate, and then check them two weeks later, with just two weeks of experience?’ And there are studies from the University of Wisconsin, as well as from Germany, showing that even after [a short period of time] there is a change in these people—it affects their level of compassion, how they see others. So, your seminar and meditation retreats will provice the tools for people to create these things in their lives? Yes, it’s what I call emotional hygiene. What it means is to first identify destructive emotions, like anger, jealousy, pride, selfishness. Often times we act on these without being aware. So we identify them and stop them because they destroy our peace. Then we teach ways to attenuate those emotions and eliminate them. The second thing will be meditation itself: What is meditation and what is the mind? And a very practical thing will be meditating and giving people the chance to experience what that means and how to use it. I’m very much looking forward to it. v

“A Non-Drug Solution Signature:___________________________ For Low Back Pain & Sciatica Sufferers” Date:

Ventura - “Sciatica has puzzled doctors and frustrated patients for years. But now modern technology may have finally cracked the back pain and sciatica code.” Those are the enthusiastic words of Ventura’s Dr. Steven Alff, D.C. Dr. Alff has been using non-surgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 - an amazing medical breakthrough to treat low back pain, disc herniations and sciatica… for over seven years now. “I was shocked at the results spinal decompression gets in a short time, and how long those results last… without the side effects of drugs or risk of surgery, commented Dr. Alff. “The best thing is we are able to offer this non-invasive therapy to so many back pain, disc herniation and sciatica sufferers right here in Ventura County”. 16

Due to his tremendous success with back pain, herniated discs, sciatica and pain radiating to the legs, Dr. Alff, D.C. wants others to know that this therapy is now available to anyone suffering with these painful conditions. “I just wanted low back pain sufferers to know they have an option other than temporary fix injections, toxic medications and risky surgery. I wanted to let them know there is finally REAL hope. To find out if your leg and/or low back pain can be relieved with non-surgical spinal decompression, Dr. Alff is offering a free, no-obligation consultation as long as it is scheduled prior to June 30, 2015. Due to the expected demand for this treatment, Dr. Alff suggests calling the office at once. The phone number is 805-232-5939. Call now!

MOM ON A MISSION How Darla Hoffman found the strength to quiet the little voices in her head.

ttention all new mothers, out-of-shape couch potatoes, tired middle-agers, Gen X-ers, and boomers. Do you suffer from lack of energy? Can’t quite zip up those pants? Miss the awesome abs of your youth? Well, have we found a local role model for you. Darla Hoffman, a 35-year-old Ventura native, transformed herself from an out-of-shape, stayat-home mom into a champion bodybuilder, winning a trio of trophies in her first competition. She recently placed second overall in the bikini division of the National Physique Committee Body }} Building Competition in Las Vegas, where she also took second place trophies in the novice division and Masters (age 35+).

How did it all begin? Darla graduated from California State University, Chico, where she studied to be a teacher before pursuing a career in acting. The model-pretty blonde nabbed bit parts on shows like Anger Management, American Beauty, Son of a Beach, ER, and Firefly, “but never landed anything big,” she said. She returned to Ventura County to teach fourth grade at Ventura Missionary School before marrying Jeremy Hoffman, who she’d known since their teen years at St. Bonaventure High School. The couple had two small children—daughter London is now 5, son Logan is 3—and Darla tried to settle into her new role as a 30-something stay-at-home mom. But she wasn’t fully satisfied. “I was determined to change my body, despite my low energy levels and feeling a bit alone as a new mom,” she said. So Darla partnered with a friend and opened a Stroller Strides franchise in Ventura. Trained in prenatal and postnatal fitness, the moms on a mission helped many local ladies “get their bodies back” after having babies. “We led group fitness classes for mommies and their babies in the park,” she explained. “Teaching Stroller Strides (a stroller-based fitness program designed for moms with little ones) was what began my love for fitness.” When her second child was born, she switched to CrossFit and later became a personal trainer at Mavericks Gym in Ventura, where she currently teaches premium group classes. “It was difficult to teach the group fitness classes in the park with two children,” she said, “so I sold the franchise. My husband and I started taking classes at West Coast Strength and Conditioning (also known as Ventura CrossFit), and suddenly I was doing things in fitness that I had never done before.” Darla thrived in the competitive environment of CrossFit. She learned Olympic weightlifting and won the eight-week “Evolution Challenge” by losing the most weight and posting the best before-and-after photos. She continued in CrossFit but wanted to work as a personal trainer. Mavericks “took a chance on me, and paid for my online training to get certified as a personal trainer.” While preparing for competition, Darla exercises two to three hours a day, six days a week. Her exacting six-meals-aday diet, from her Team Edge coaches, consists of four to five ounces of protein and veggies, two servings of healthy fats (nuts or avocado), and three servings of healthy carbs (sweet potatoes, brown rice, or oats). No fruit. No sugar. And she avoids sodium. “Meal prepping makes it easy for me. I never have to think about what to eat. I prep my food on Sunday for the next three days, and then again on Wednesdays,” she explained, adding, “Wherever I go, my food goes!” Eating every two-and-a-half hours keeps her metabolism high and helps her build lean mass while keeping energy levels up. She supplements her diet with glutamine, amino acids, and daily vitamins from one of her sponsors, Better Body Sports Ventura, and drinks a gallon of water a day. When not in “competition prep,” her normal workout routine takes about an hour-and-a-half, four to five days a week. While this might not be realistic for most people, the 22

trainer stresses that people should find activities that are fun. “Fitness should be something you enjoy, not something you dread,” she explained. “The best part of my job is helping others reach their fitness goals. … I have a client, Crystal, who has lost over 80 pounds working with me. The other day when she finally bought new workout clothes, I cried because I was so proud of her. She looks like a completely different person. She is happier and more confident.” But of course there are the excuses—which, Darla admits, get old. “Oh, we hear a lot of them as trainers. People constantly say they want to make a change, but they aren’t willing to give up small things. If giving up the cream in your coffee is a deal breaker, then you must not really want to change.” Her foray into bodybuilding led to some confusion—and even a few lost friendships. “The worst part of bodybuilding is that people don’t understand it. They either ask if I’m going to ‘turn into a man and get all muscly,’ or they become defensive and start telling me all the reasons they could never do some-

thing like that. People are usually negative because they don’t understand it.” But walking across that stage in a “teeny, tiny bikini” to be judged was an eye-opener for a formerly self-conscious young girl who “never felt completely comfortable in my own skin.” Darla was petrified, to be sure, but found that fear was “actually a huge motivator. I wanted to let go of all those little voices in my head that made me think my body wasn’t good enough.” During 22 grueling weeks of training, she never lost sight of her goal. And when the day finally arrived and the competitor walked “proudly” across the stage with “one of the biggest smiles ever” on her face, it was the realization of a dream. “One of the best days of my life,” she recalled. “I would never trade that experience. It has made me into a better person in so many ways.” v

TRAVEL Photo courtesy of Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort

THE WATERS OF LOVE A weekend getaway up the coast offers health, wellness, and just a whiff of romance. In the healing springs of Avila Beach, writer LESLIE A. WESTBROOK takes the plunge. LOVE IS SAID TO OFFER SURPRISING HEALTH BENEFITS. Married people visit doctors less frequently, live longer, and tend not to suffer from depression. Soaking in mineral water also promises curative benefits, from skin to spirit. So why not try to combine the two—love and water? As luck would have it, a potential love interest appeared on my radar recently. I thought we could “test the waters,” so to speak, with a getaway I’d already planned at a healing spot just a two-hour drive up the coast. This was not a “toss in the hay” trip; I wanted to get to know “Tom” better. If he could pack a swimsuit and pajamas—and sleep on the sofa bed and leave his sexual expectations at home, I told him, he was welcome to join me and spend some real, face time together in a beautiful setting. He was on board for one night during my two-night stay. I hadn’t been to Sycamore Mineral Springs in Avila Beach since

the last century. Since that time, the natural springs resort and spa, set on 100 acres, had been expanded and remodeled. We’d be staying in a suite, set along a long row of connected cottages located across a bridge from the main part of the resort. Nestled in a tree canopy, our lodging was adjacent to the Bob Jones Trail, a two-mile long public pathway to the beach. Our trip started out fine. “Tom” is a wine collector, so we collected bottles from two wineries in nearby Edna Valley, Sextant and Tolosa. We drove up See Canyon and visited the Avila winery Kelsey See Canyon Vineyards, where we admired the resident peacocks as staff prepared their regular Sunday afternoon shindig with live music, food, and wine. We then headed to our destination. The cottages have names like “Soothing,” “Peace,” “Happiness,” and “Longing.” Signs of what might transpire in this tranquil, tree-filled nature preserve setting. Our lovely king size cottage (“Soothing”) included a living room with a sofa bed; a

large bedroom with a king size, four-poster bed; a nice bathroom with a walk-in double-headed shower; and a private deck with a deep soaking tub. Soothing, to be sure. We filled up the private deck spa with hot mineral water and got into the tub and chatted. Later, we strolled across the bridge to the Gardens of Avila restaurant and enjoyed a Sunday dinner with wonderful wine and conversation. But when we got back to the room, Tom retreated silently to the couch. He hadn’t brought his pajamas and didn’t want to share a bed with a woman he wasn’t having sexual relations with, he told me. There was not enough fire for me to ignite a torch (yet), and he didn’t want to waste any more time “waiting to see.” Needless to say, he left the next morning, deeming us “off.” We wished each well in our respective pursuits of love. But I did feel a bit bruised. I crossed the bridge and meandered the long path to the main part of Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort many times during the remainder of my stay. There was hatha yoga in the dome, trips in my car to explore Avila Beach and the spa and hot tubs on the hill. I had time to reflect as the wind rustled the sycamore leaves and birdsong filled the air. Had I been misled, or had I been misleading? Were we both too stuck in our ways? He was nearing retirement; I was nearing retirement age. We both wanted a companion. But he seemed to want whoever was there at the moment, whereas I wanted to make sure the person I wanted also wanted me, not just any gal. I felt objectified. He felt rejected, I assume. But we all work at different speeds. Women need to feel loved and safe, and to believe they can trust the person they open up to. Men just seem to—well, if you are a man reading this, you tell me: Is it really just about food, libation, sports, and sex? Maybe so. We all want to feel loved, which keeps us healthy and well.

A wise physician once said, “The best medicine for humans is love.” When asked what to do if it doesn’t work, he smiled and replied, “Increase the dose.” The next morning I took a pre-massage soak in one of the hot tubs in the wooded part of the resort, a place I’d remembered fondly from previous visits. It was like being with an old friend. The spa had been beautifully remodeled, and I savored the hacienda/Moroccan-style lounge and patio before my integrative massage. My masseuse, Karen, worked her magic on my body and soul. We laughed about men—and laughed at ourselves. When I told her about Tom, admitting that perhaps we were both too stuck in our ways, she swiftly replied, “Maybe you need someone who likes how you are stuck.” This was just what I needed to hear to make everything fall into place. I knew I’d made the right decision in bringing Tom. After all, if we didn’t fall in love in this setting, it probably wasn’t meant to be. In the end, my trip to Sycamore Mineral Springs and Avila Beach was a perfect weekend getaway for health and wellness. And perhaps most importantly, for wholeness and being true to myself. v TRIP PLANNER Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort & Spa is located at 1215 Avila Beach Drive, San Luis Obispo. For detailed info call 805.595.7302 or visit sycamoresprings.com. Rates are $159-$399 (check online or with the resort for specials). Hot tubs are $13.50 an hour per person, and spa services begin at $65. Hotel guests can partake in hatha yoga, meditation, and Pilates classes free of charge. Learn more about the area at visitavilabeach.com and visitsanluisobispocounty.com. OPPOSITE TOP: Tucked into the lee of Point San Luis, Avila Beach is one of few Central California beach towns protected from the coast’s prevailing northwesterly wind. OPPOSITE BOTTOM (L. TO R.): The original ‘20s-era tile-roofed spa building, with outdoor deck for post-treatment relaxation; behind the spa, a garden gazebo (popular for weddings); stand-up paddleboarders off Avila Beach Pier.

TABLE TALK

EARTHBOUND BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER

entura County is the land of the locavore. Nearly every independent restaurant incorporates seasonal produce into their menu. Shops specializing in locally produced beer, wine, cheese, meats, olive oil, and more have sprung up all over. And every city in the county boasts a weekly (or more frequent) farmer’s market. The trend is bringing food production and distribution back to our own

backyards as much as possible. Whether it’s raising chickens at home, learning how to make your own cheese, or sharing garden harvests with neighbors, there are lots of ways to make the food supply a community endeavor. Here are some (but by no means all) of the organizations helping average citizens live healthier lives by offering alternatives to Big Ag.

Ojai Valley Grange Ojai’s Grange is part of the larger, national fraternal organization officially called the National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry, which was founded after the Civil War and is the oldest American agricultural advocacy group. The Grange was always meant to be a place where farmers (and their families) could gather, share wisdom, offer support, and simply come together as a community. The Ojai Valley Grange hall on Cruzero Street has been the location for classes in soapmaking, cheesemaking, permaculture gardening, animal husbandry, and other traditional skills. But while it originally developed as an agriculturally focused society, the Grange now includes craftspeople, artists, and all manner of people interested in the environment and the local economy. “This generation’s iteration of the Grange idea may be a whole mix of things,” explains Grace Malloy of Poco Farms. “We’re just reviving this ritual of using Grange space as a hot house of community resiliency and reviving all of that old wisdom.”

Blue Hill Farms

Ventura Produce Cooperative

“I was a city kid, born in LA,” recalls Kim Hamilton. “At 4 or 5 I went to a county fair and touched this beautiful goat—that turned me into a farmer.” Hamilton has happily kept pygmy goats, chickens, ducks, rabbits, and quail on her one-acre plot in Casitas Springs, and shares her wisdom with the many locals attempting to recreate some aspects of agricultural living at home. “People are trying to be more connected with their food supply,” she says. At Blue Hill, Hamilton teaches everything from chicken raising to soil building and composting. But she’s most passionate about her outreach to local schools: “We need farmers in the future. If I can interest one child, I think that’s doing something.”

Not sure what to do with all that zucchini? Having trouble keeping up with your avocados and oranges during a boom year? Don’t throw it on the compost heap—bring it to the co-op! Twice a month during the summer, you can come to the Crop Swap held at A Secret Garden Florist and Cafe (981 E. Main St., Ventura) and exchange the bounty of your garden with that of other local growers. It’s a great way to unload extras, get some variety, and commune with other avid gardeners. And while you’re restocking your larder, you just might make some new friends.

Thrive Market Think of it like Whole Foods, but delivered to your door. Thrive founder Gunnar Lovelace got the idea from his stepfather, who ran a food-buying club from his organic farm in Ojai. Lovelace has taken that same model and expanded on it, creating an online store that stocks numerous brands of healthy, organic food that members shop for at a discount (25-50 percent, the site claims). Though it’s not strictly a locally based company, we’re including Thrive here because we appreciate how easy this contemporary marketplace makes it for people to make healthy food choices, at a price they can afford.

Ojai Valley Bee Club Colony collapse disorder, parasitic flies, Varroa destructor mites, and toxic pesticides have taken a toll on bee populations. The Ojai Valley Bee Club is a group of concerned citizens and bee enthusiasts hoping to keep local bees thriving. “Pollinators are responsible for 30 percent of our food supply,” says club member Bob Meyer. While some members are amateur beekeepers, many are involved in education and advocacy: encouraging people to include flowering plants in their gardens, provide a source of water for drought-stricken pollinators, and generally make the environment more friendly to Apian species. “We like to get people thinking about bees, just being aware of the things they can do to help,” Meyer explains. “We’re concerned about our future.”

Ventura Fish Company This family-owned fishing outfit aims to keep seafood—a Ventura County staple—a constant source of healthy protein through sustainable practices. Operated under a U.S. fishery management plan, the company works with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and National Marines Fisheries Service to make sure that their practices meet national standards designed to eliminate overfishing and maintain healthy fish stocks. Purchase their local, wild-caught seafood at Ventura Harbor’s Saturday Fisherman’s Market (Saturdays 8-11 a.m.), or check out their Facebook page for other opportunities to buy their ecologically harvested bounty.

JUNE 2015

Coming Soon: Food Co-Ops A food cooperative is, at its most basic level, a market owned and operated by its members, who have a say in how the store is run and the products it stocks. Members pay a fee in exchange for discounts and voting rights. They all operate differently based on the needs and expectations of each community, but in general, the emphasis tends to be on locally produced food and commodities. Food is a powerful building block for a community, and localizing the food supply means investing in the local economy, including its farmers and artisans. And of course, getting your products closer to home means a smaller carbon footprint for everyone. Ojai and Ventura are in the early stages of building their co-ops (the process takes 3-5 years), but the organizers are passionate and both communities seem poised to embrace the idea with open arms. Having such a wealth of agricultural riches right here doesn’t hurt, either. “We have the ability to feed ourselves,” Ojai Food Co-Op founder Michelle Lopez-Dohrn says. “And we’re working with other organizations that are committed to building a more resilient food system.” One of those collaborations is with the Ventura Food Co-Op, which just started organizing last year (Ojai’s started in 2012) and intends to be a “sister co-op” to Ojai. The model may be different, but the goal is the same, says founding member Ally Gialketsis, who also works with Food Forward. “There are so many reasons to have a co-op, but one of the big ones is to control the food systems to benefit the community.” Stay tuned for more developments on both co-ops in the months ahead. v

ALLSTATE BUSINESS SHIELD for SM

Protect the health of your business with customized coverage.

This Mid-Century classic home designed by Michael Chalfant Head, son of the noted California architect Randolph Chalfant Head, has remained in the family from the time it was built. The design mirrors influences from Michael Head’s time in Vienna, where he studied architecture. The original circle-in-square plan of the house, its surrounding walls, and the Koi pond embody Head’s efforts to apply Renaissance design principles to a modern home. F I N E

Feel the stunning impact of two glass walls, a boldly sloped diagonal beam, and lush redwood paneling as you enter the Great Room, taking you right back to 1961. Floor-to-ceiling glass on three sides allows the light and life of the gardens to flow right into the rooms. The house retains most of its original features including a name plate built into the front door reading “Michaelus hoc fecit”. A pull-string bell announces your arrival. The 1600 sq. ft. house on a 3/4 acre lot features three bedrooms and two bathrooms, as well as a detached accessory building that could be used as a studio or office. The gardens feature mountain views and walking paths. One of those unique homes that rarely come on the market - and waiting for the discriminating buyer.
