TRANSFORMATIONS
C
ommitting to major changes is often a January thing. The clock strikes midnight and there we all are, with our resolutions, gym memberships, healthy foods on the grocery list and a determination to make a fresh start. The New Year is a time for new beginnings, after all. But the truth is, real transformations — the ones that stick — aren’t anchored to a day marked on the calendar. Lifestyle evolution, like the biological kind, tends to occur gradually, through small modifications that build up over time. It took Mee Lee, CEO and chef of nut butter enterprise Mee Eat Paleo (page 21), years to get from investment banking in New York City to a CrossFitand-surfing culture on Ventura’s C Street — but she eventually made it, and couldn’t be happier. Donna Johanson of Chivas Skin Care (page 31) bought two goats simply for the luxury of having raw, organic milk for her family. Being in the beauty biz was never part of the plan. But with too much milk on her hands, she started making soap . . . which led to selling it . . . which eventually blossomed into a family farm and a line of artisanal skin care products. Sometimes we switch things up for the most mundane of reasons, and end up finding meaning beyond the original impetus. Scott Andrade was staring down layoffs at the company he had worked at for years.

Ventura Float Center (page 12) was his way to avoid the unemployment line. But it also became a catalyst for change, as the self-described resident of “cubicle nation” reinvented himself as an entrepreneur in the healing arts, leaving the stress and corporate culture behind for freedom and fulfillment. Not every transformation has to happen on such a grand scale to be meaningful, of course. Leslie Westbrook traveled less than 200 miles to immerse herself in the healing waters of Desert Hot Springs (page 37). A few days in this quiet, restful desert landscape was enough to hit the reset button, allowing her to return home relaxed and refreshed, ready for the next grand adventure . . . or maybe just ready to take on another day. The point of all this: evolution isn’t dependent on dates or seasons, and there’s no one-size-fits-all plan for transforming your life. Seismic shifts, incremental adjustments, a change of scenery or perspective — they all serve the same goal: furthering the pursuit of health and happiness. May we all be so lucky as to recognize our many myriad opportunities for change . . . and use them to forge a path to greater joy.

3 LOVE IS BREWING IN PARIS CHAMPAGNE LUNCHEON AND TEA The Third Annual Love is Brewing in Paris Champagne Luncheon & Tea was held May 14 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village. Guests donned tea-party attire and elaborate hats while sipping sparkling wine, perusing auction items and enjoying accordion music on the gorgeous Waterfall Lawn. Special guests included Assembly Member Jacqui Irwin, Supervisor Kathy Long and Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean. The event, presented by the Ventura County Credit Union and Interface Children and Family Services, honored Commander Monica McGrath of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, who received the Champion for Change Award in recognition of her advocacy on behalf of survivors of abuse. The art exhibit Project Hope was also unveiled, featuring artwork by domestic violence victims helped by Interface. The event raised more than $70,000 for Interface’s Family Violence Intervention Services’ shelters and prevention programs. 1. TAKING THE PLUNGE Good vibes and good health at Ventura Float Center. BY MICHAEL AUSHENKER LESA JOHNSON MOVED TO OXNARD nearly two years ago from San Diego, where she had floated on a regular basis since 2011. No, not floating between jobs. Literally floating: in a therapeutic bath of magnesium and nutrients-laden saltwater. Relocating for her employer, an international construction company, in 2014, Johnson was bummed to find that, unlike San Diego, there was a dearth of float facilities near her adopted home. That all changed last summer when Scott Andrade opened Ventura Float Center. “He wants to make sure the experience is what you get out of it,” Johnson said. “If you don’t, he wants to know why. He walks you through it a lot better than they did in San Diego. The prices up here are a lot better, too.” Anyone who has ever traveled to Israel and delved into the Dead Sea will never forget the sensation of bobbing in those dense, muddy, sodium-enriched Mediterranean waters: warm, calm, soothing, ethereal, maybe even spiritual. While it may not contain the power and the mystique of the Holy Land, Ventura Float Center captures the physical salve of suspended animation and, depending on your intent, meditative properties. Billed by Andrade as “a unique pathway to calmness,” floating encases you in an eightfoot-long, 4.5-foot-high tankful of personal comfort zone. Like a trip back into the womb, bobbing renders you weightless, worriless, pressure- and stress-free. Some 200 gallons of water, 600 pounds of Epsom salt and 50 pounds of sea salt are fired up to 95 degrees Fahrenheit for this customized experience. The salty environment within the water, sans chlorine or other chemicals, does not allow for bacteria and germs to manifest. Sanitized and cleaned after each individual use, the float room is routinely sterilized. The Samadhi tank, however, is no hot tub and this is no multi-player game. The chamber is designed to relax one person at a time. The average session lasts 75 minutes. Floating can help alleviate mental and phys12

It’s harder than dry mediation,” Williams said. “The first time, you’re busy experiencing the floating. The second time, you get it. My body feels good. Quite honestly, I would like to go every day.” Thousand Oaks entrepreneur Michael Rifenberg has been an active floater since 1999. He first experienced a one-hour float in 1992, has been to float centers in Venice, San Diego and New Orleans, and, for a while, even owned his own tank. “I couldn’t recommend it enough,” Rifenberg said, name-checking The Book of Floating author Michael Hutchinson. “I work and travel a lot. When I go, I like to go
once a week.” Rifenberg has soaked as long as four to eight hours a session. He doesn’t really get bored because “Once you get into that state, time is an illusive concept.” For this businessman, the practice is meditative and mentally therapeutic. The brain gets synchronized, left and right hemispheres align, dopamine levels climb, stress melts away. Andrade has gotten as much, or more, out of his float center as his customers. Beyond those weekly baths, the business itself has relieved him of the major stresses of his previous professional life. “It’s made my life so much simpler,” Andrade said. “That corporate check, it was guaranteed; but the freedom . . . I can pick up my grandkids when I want to. We went and
saw The Jungle Book. . . . It’s nice to work with people on a one-on-one basis, helping people. I’m a lot happier. My life is much, much more fulfilling.” “I’m around a real mellow, happy, feelgood environment,” he added, smiling. “Just to be around people when they’re feeling better. I get to see it every day, man! I get to know these people.” Ah, life is good when you’re floating at the top. v

MeeNut Butter is paleo and vegan, nonGMO with no added sugar — and naturally, there are free samples of all the flavors. Lee says she works hard to ensure MeeNut Butter is as healthy and locally sourced as it can be (macadamia nuts being a big exception to the local option), and they’re close to being all-organic and kosher-certified. “I’m really particular about where my ingredients come from,” she says. The Korean-born, Venturabased chef and businesswoman whips up all of her MeeNut Butter with the help of a few friends in a commercial kitchen space she shares with a catering company. “I really never intended to be running a nut butter company!” she tells me from the airy front office of the kitchen. While it wasn’t her lifelong goal to get here, it seems natural she’s doing it in Ventura, as surfing is one of her passions. She lives near C Street and drops in there occasionally — although she prefers the relative calm of Solimar Beach. Lee lives, surfs and sells MeeNut Butter near Downtown, but she actually spends most of her time on the other side of town. She’s in the kitchen space four days a week and coaches at BeachSide CrossFit (just a few storefronts down) three times a week. The Mee Eat Paleo office is located within BeachSide CrossFit. The popular high-intensity fitness program is her other passion. Her face lights up when she talks about how it’s changed her life for the better. It’s no coincidence that CrossFit and
Lee’s nut butter business are intertwined. When she first moved to Ventura, she’d already begun her involvement in the CrossFit community. Then she met the owner of BeachSide CrossFit and he convinced her to start eating Paleo. On the Paleo diet, one avoids legumes, dairy, starches and processed foods, instead focusing on fruits, vegetables, nuts and lean meats. She says before she went Paleo she struggled with a

lot of inflammation and pain caused by all the processed foods she was eating. CrossFit taught her about the importance of proper nutrition and fueling one’s body to train and feel stronger overall. “I never would have cleaned up my diet if it weren’t for CrossFit. I ate really poorly and I paid for it,” she says. “You feel terrible!” Lee loved peanut butter and had a difficult time giving up that particular legume, so she whipped up a batch of healthier nut butter a few years back. Her CrossFit coach convinced her to start making it for people at the gym. Before long, other CrossFitters came knocking. “I started getting emails and requests from all these people who wanted to buy the nut butter,” Lee says. She quickly put together a website and formally starting selling MeeNut Butter in }}

2011. Beyond the gym, Lee also gathered a few wholesale accounts for Mee Eat Paleo and hit the road selling at CrossFit competitions. A year later she quit her job at a Christian communications company in Camarillo and went MeeNut full time. A decade ago, Lee never would have recognized her current CrossFit-and-nut-butter lifestyle. Born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised a self-described book nerd in New Jersey, she attended college at Rutgers and moved to the Upper West Side of New York City while working for an investment bank in the commercial mortgage department. She caught the surfing bug one summer on the Jersey Shore and began commuting back and forth from Manhattan to Long Beach (near Long Island) to surf every day. “That’s a long train ride, and I had a full-time job in the city,” she says. “I would get on the train at some ungodly hour to meet my friend for a quick surf then get back on the train for work.” “I’d literally be salty in a suit going to work,” Lee adds with a laugh. This was around 2008. The financial crisis hit and she put everything in storage and moved to Hawaii to spend a year surfing and figuring out what to do next. She island-hopped for that year, but did the most surfing on the North Shore of Oahu. Her next move after Hawaii, a fortuitous trip to Southern California, changed her life trajectory yet again. Her sporty brother lived in Santa Clarita and took her to CrossFit in 2009. She fell in love with the fitness program, moved to Ventura (chosen based on a search for the nearest surf spot), began making MeeNut Butter and, yes, the rest is history. It’s all a far cry from where Lee began, but she says she’s exactly where she should be right now, thanks to her Christian faith. “Although Mee Eat Paleo was never in my plans, I truly believe that everything in life happens for a reason,” she explains “I just want to be faithful to what’s in front of me right now.” As Lee closes up her shared kitchen space on a warm Ventura night and offers some MeeNut Butter from the office, she reaches out for a hug goodbye and smiles, “Mahalo!” v

“This scale meticulously measures with the highest accuracy all the products we create here,” Johanson says. Chivas creates Argan Cleansing Oils, Argan Eye Creme, a selection of facial and body soaps, laundry soap, shave soap and essential oil blends, all at the farm. Still more of their goat milk skin care products are made in a lab according to Johanson’s recipes. Run by Johanson and her daughter Lauren Johanson Jones from their small, peaceful farm in Fillmore, Chivas Farm is surrounded by orange groves and mountains and comes equipped with the quintessential red barn, two rescued free-roaming pigs, Piggles and Oreo, and Diva, their rescued red Angus cow, who still loves to be bottle-fed at the grand old age of a year and a half. The farm is home to chickens and dogs as well as 14 adult Alpine goats and their 20 babies, born this spring. Alpine goats, commonly used for cheesemaking because of their milk’s high fat content, supply all the goat milk needed for the Chivas Skin Care line. “Alpine goats are my favorite breed; they are quiet, sophisticated and intelligent. I think they are a really classy kind of goat,” laughs Johanson. The goats are hand-milked in the morning and late afternoon. They are typically fed organic grain and lots of alfalfa, free-choice minerals and kelp to keep them healthy and high producers of top-quality milk. Jones explains the benefits of using pure goat milk in her products: “Goat milk is a complete food, packed with rich vitamins and nutrients. The fat and protein globules are very small, so all the goodness is easily absorbed into the skin. It also has a very low pH balance so it is gentle, especially important for problem skin.” Additionally, goat milk is high in alpha hydroxy acids (lactic acid) that break down and remove dead skin cells that can otherwise clog the pores. Chivas does not use any synthetic fragrances, artificial colorants or chemical preservatives in its skin care products. No parabens, phthalates or mineral oils are used. It’s Jones’ dream for people to be as careful with what they put on their skin as what they put into their bodies. “We are all so focused on eating organically, but the skin often misses out.” “Chivas offers an uncomplicated way to take care of the skin naturally. We like to keep things simple,” Jones says with a smile. This simplicity is reflected in their line, beginning with minimal packaging and a fresh logo, designed by Jones. “We are the type of women who like having fewer things in our bathroom cabinets.” Chivas began in 2004 when Johanson bought two goats so she could have raw organic milk for her family. “I had a surplus of milk with these two goats, one in particular was dubbed Dolly Parton — she }}

was so overloaded! I made cheese, ice cream, yogurt and eventually figured out how to make soap.” Johanson was one of the first people to benefit from the all-natural, gentle soap she made. She had lived with chronically dry skin, trying every mainstream and high-end product to alleviate the problem. Those products just made her skin worse, so she started creating her own. And it worked. She also began giving away bars of goat milk soap as gifts. Everyone asked for more. So she started selling them around town. At one school fair, Johanson remembers a woman who bought up every bar of soap they had. “She told me it was the only soap she and her daughter could use because of their terrible eczema! That’s when the seed was planted.” Johanson’s “hobby” was actually helping people. Jones did some globetrotting before joining what is now the family business. After college she traveled around the world working on farms, where she was exposed to many exciting ideas that she brought home to Fillmore. A lavender farm in New Zealand left a lasting impression. “That is a smell I will never forget. I was so inspired!” Jones became obsessed with the idea of using natural, essential oils instead of synthetic perfumes. During her travels she also became aware of the benefits and importance of using only fair-trade ingredients whenever possible. When she joined her mother at the farm, the two got serious about their business. With Jones’ encouragement, Johanson switched over to pure plant-based essential oils and started sourcing fair-trade ingredients. “It starts with the soap. That’s the foundation, the first building block to any beauty regime. A good moisturizing soap is really the key,” Johanson says of the company’s beauty philosophy. Chivas specializes in a boutique line of soaps with such scents as energizing peppermint, soothing chamomile rose, refreshing lemon eucalyptus and balancing sage and geranium. It also has a line of market soaps with scents of lavender, citrus mint and lemon. And it offers a popular, fragrance-free version for those with especially sensitive or problem skin. The line includes two simple moisturizers and two newly launched toners, one “calming” for those with sensitive skin, and another “nourishing” for especially dry skin. There’s also an array of goat milk body lotions, essential oils and a brandnew eye cream. Additionally, it has a great line for men. Chivas goat milk skin care products are now sold in over 100 stores nationwide, and Johanson and Jones are involved in fun projects like their collaboration with Lionsgate Entertainment, bringing the fictional soap from the Netflix show, Orange Is The New Black, to life. They also partnered with Elizabeth’s Canvas to create a line of Gifts That Give soaps. For every soap purchase, a portion of the proceeds goes to help Elizabeth’s Canvas fund free art classes for cancer patients and survivors. Johanson and Jones agree. “Beauty is not just what you see on the outside. It’s staying hydrated, using sunscreen, eating good food and, above all, keeping it simple.” v

T
he winds blew strongly across the desert valley floor as my friend Ewy and I traveled toward Desert Hot Springs, passing rugged California native scrub, graceful palo verde, future tumbleweeds and the majestic white wind turbines turning and churning for the good of Mother Earth, converting kinetic energy into electrical power. We were looking for a wellness escape from the usual pressure and stresses of daily living. Our criteria: a place that wasn’t too far but that would make us feel as if we were a million miles away. We opted for the healing mineral waters in the northwest swatch of Coachella Valley, where magnificent mountains that turn pink at sunset embrace the stark, and at times brutal, landscape of this part of California. There is much to explore in the Coachella Valley. I’ve made annual pilgrimages to Palm Springs and environs south of the I-10 for decades, but only a few to the “other” side. Desert Hot Springs is a far, funky cry from its sister city, the posher,

There’s a calm on the mineral springs side of the I-10, where a plethora of wellness options range from doing nothing at all but soaking in the healing waters to engaging in yoga and tai chi classes to indulging in spa treatments to soothe body and soul. California’s “spa city” offers more than 20 inns, spas and resorts to choose from, including the delightful, historic Two Bunch Palms (I highly recommend this oasis with its range of services, onsite restaurant and terrific staff, including a resident shaman) and the more bed-and-breakfastlike, cozy, lesser-known El Morocco Inn and Spa. Before checking into our mineral springs lodging, we made a detour to Sunnylands, the magnificent gardens and home of TV Guide magnate/former U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom Walter Annenberg and his wife, Leonore. The vast compound is a desert version of an English grand estate, complete with the Annenbergs’ private burial spot. A tour of the house, designed by A. Quincy Jones — which has been and continues to be a meeting place for U.S. presidents, royalty and other VIPs — offers a fascinating time capsule in architecture while allowing a peek inside the lifestyle of the rich and famous Annenbergs. Then it was back to our headquarters for the evening: El Morocco Inn and Spa, a charmingly magical environment. Staff member Stephanie provided a warm afternoon welcome and showed us around the Inn, including the garden where she recommended the Sultan’s Tent as a meditation or yoga space. A sweet spot to read a book and rest as well, I thought. The garden, she told us, is where smoking is allowed. What’s a casbah without a hookah, I wondered? Delicate chiffon billowed in the central courtyard surrounding the larger of two mineral water pools. Colorful seating beckoned and the outdoor bar made an ideal locale for guests to gather and chat over continental breakfast or drinks. Draped fabric and Oriental rugs abound, even along an outdoor staircase leading to second-story rooms and the infrared sauna. Oud music playing throughout set the mood as the sirocco winds whipped the tree branches, creating an exotic cacophony of sound. Even the dusty town of Desert Hot Springs seemed a million miles away. My room — behind a bright blue door — had a low bed with a mosquito-net canopy, Moroccan lamps, a sitting area built into a niche and a small Moroccan table. Beaded curtains revealed a kitchenette with microwave, sink and fridge. The bathrooms have showers only, but who needs baths with mineral water to soak in?

Stephanie graciously prepared a welcoming café filtre for my friend and a “Humphrey Bogart” (mint tea and lemonade) for me, placed on a tray outside my door with dried apricots, dates and cookies. Before long, it was Morocco-tini time — a nice way to ease into the evening. Without television, there’s no excuse for not jumping into the geothermal swimming pool, kept at a comfortable 92 degrees, and huge Jacuzzi spa set in a fabric-draped enclosure and warmed to 104 degrees. We popped into town for dinner at Casa Blanca (yes, really) for margaritas and Mexican food. We were there on a Thursday, which means all-day happy hour, $3.50 margaritas, a packed house and diners digging into the tasty chiles rellenos and excellent tacos. There’s not a whole lot to do in Desert Hot Springs — which is exactly the point. But if you must venture out, Cabot’s Pueblo Museum is worth a visit with its interesting regional history, unique architecture, quirky gardens and a great gift shop. Joshua Tree National Park is about 40 minutes away; sparkly Palm Springs, about 20 minutes to the south. Folks come here mostly to enjoy the benefits of soaking in the mineral waters and also to drink the award-winning tap water. Some swear the lithium content, although it’s minimal, cures their crazies. I drank up as well, following orders after my shaman-guided “Soul Retrieval” two days earlier at Two Bunch Palms — but that’s another story. We took a drive after dinner so we could see the mountains turn pink. When we returned to the inn and walked through the magic door, the fire pit and outdoor fireplace glowed. Back in my room, I found comfort in the silence of my own personal casbah and was greeted by resident cat Ingrid (named after Bergman, natch) who decided to curl up on the bed and spend the night. With so many spa hotels in the area, it may be hard to choose. Next time, I’d like to stay at the midcentury, super-cool boutique Hotel Lautner (just four rooms). I’d also love to return to the historic and everpopular Two Bunch Palms, which has recently redone the mid-century-meets-1980s rooms and installed huge walk-in showers. Plans are in the works for a muchneeded new spa building and another soaking grotto. But El Morocco’s co-owner/innkeeper Bruce Abney should win the Most Cheerful Person on the Planet Award, so I’d like to return just to see him again. Cruise out to the desert, folks, even for just a spa day. Once immersed in the waters, you won’t want to leave. Try to stay a night or two — or book a solid
No oasis is complete without its sparkling pool, and El Morocco’s geothermal version fits the bill nicely. Heated to a balmy 92 degrees, it soothes soul and sore muscles in equal measure.
