T

rue style encompasses many things. Visuals, of course. An ideology or approach. Manufacturing principles. A place where functionality and fashion and artistic expression come together. There are myriad ways to combine all of these elements, and this month’s stories showcase the breadth, depth and diversity of style in our local community. On one end of the spectrum is the forward-thinking Designworks. The Newbury Park-based design consultancy (part of the BMW Group) is in the business of picturing what the world will be like decades from now. Its core mission: to envision right now the tools consumers will want and need in the future. A commitment to reflecting “newness” is at the heart and soul of Designworks’ aesthetic, and you can see it in everything the studio develops, whether it’s a pair of shoes, ergonomic seating or an automobile that integrates all the bells and whistles available. Elegant lines, cool metallics, innovative shapes: That’s the world of tomorrow as conceived by Designworks. But of course, the tried and true has value, too, as Neil Harrison can attest. His cotton and denim menswear is heavily influenced by the simple yet sturdy jeans and t-shirts his mother (a seamstress) dressed him in. Stormy Monday also makes skateboards and cutting boards, and as a whole his collection speaks to an appreciation for vintage craftsmanship and unpretentious, but

reliable, time-tested quality. Personal expression is important to any designer, and for River Sauvageau, owner of Studio Sauvageau, that means color: wide ranging and plenty of it. The vibrant patterns that she turns into purses, luggage, backpacks, wallets and similar products are mirrored in her art, in her home, and in her richly decorated retail store in Downtown Ojai. Part of River (if you’ll pardon the expression) runs through all of it, giving her beautiful bags a style all their own. Valerie Pike, a Ventura-based kids’ yoga teacher, wanted something comfortable for her pint-sized yogis to wear while they practiced their asanas. Her fashionconscious students craved clothing with style and panache that went beyond sweatpants and leotards. Out of those two needs was born YogaBerries, a fun, functional and, most importantly, comfortable line of childrens’ activewear that is now sold across the country. Four designers, four products lines, four styles as different from each other as the sources that inspired them. From the stuff of science fiction to the fondly recalled past, and every point in between, there’s no “one” style that defines Ventura County. That’s the beauty of having so much talent in one place: It finds so many different outlets for expression. FOUR STAR THEATER AWARDS HIGH STREET ARTS CENTER, MOORPARK While the film community was handing out Oscars on Sunday, Feb. 26, nearly a hundred community theater mavens were honored at Ventura County’s Four Star Theater Awards at the High Street Arts Center in Moorpark. The marquee was bright, the carpet red, the emcees engaging and the photographers busy snapping well-dressed recipients in between highlights from the most outstanding live plays produced in 2016. has to imagine the future,” says Laura Robin. “People have to put their imaginations into something that’s not out there yet.” Robin is the studio director for Designworks, a global design consultancy in Newbury Park. From the minds of its designers, engineers, modelers, researchers, strategists and other industrial design professionals spring inspiration for products that affect the way we live — everything from cosmetic tools to furniture to automobiles — today and in the years to come. For Designworks, the future is now . . . and the studio intends to bring the rest of us up to speed. Robin describes this concept of constantly thinking decades ahead as Fixstern (“fixed star” in German), and it’s been Designworks’ operating principle for many years. Under this premise, new ideas are first imagined within a “future context,”

i Inside Future sculpture, which debuted at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in January. This model of a car interior showcases BMW’s vision for the future of driving — which it expects to be autonomous, at least in part. The result is something like a lounge on wheels. It’s roomy, for one thing, and BMW presented it with throw pillows, a bookshelf and other homey touches. “We’re creating a new experience in a roomlike space,” Robin says of Inside Future. “We’re designing for something other than moving from point A to point B.” There’s a direct line between Inside Future and BMW’s VISION NEXT 100 project, undertaken in 2016 in celebration of the company’s 100-year anniversary. These concept cars are not available to consumers, but they represent the direction BMW intends to head in “the next 100 years” to come. “It was a collaboration to reinterpret something,” Designworks President Oliver Heilmer says of the project. Heilmer came on in August after three years as the head of BMW’s Interior Design Group in Munich, and has been heavily involved with NEXT 100 since its inception. “We wanted to show iconic change based on BMW principles. What does this car look like in 30 years? Not just a vehicle with four wheels, but an entire concept . . . something with intelligence.” And by intelligence, he means real-time information — speed, navigation, driving conditions, the movement of other vehicles on the road and more — provided on the windshield by the Companion, a digital “assistant” built into the vehicle that intuits the driver’s needs (and has some capacity to learn from input it receives to better “understand” the driver). This information is meant to improve the driver’s performance and pleasure during fully automated driving. But Heilmer also pictures a future where driving is optional, and many of the NEXT 100 features are meant to support this reality as well. “BMW is the ultimate driving machine,” he says, “but this is something different. What if you’re not driving? There is duality in the car — Boost and Ease Modes. The geometry of the car changes based on the mode, and the environment.” Boost Mode provides a configuration for enhanced driving, with suitable information displayed. In Ease Mode, the steering wheel retracts, seat configuration changes and the Companion provides information on places of interest, taking attention away from the road so that the driver can relax and be entertained. That means taking into consideration things like emerging technologies, consumer needs (and expectations), economics, the environment. “We’re designing to a 10- to 15-year mark,” she explains. “You have to understand the future at a really meta level.” Within that context, designs must reflect something modern and innovative. “Our designers draw on a highly developed intuition for visual newness,” Robin says, “and create a new future expression that is at once emotional and functional.” Fixstern is a BMW design philosophy as well; Designworks has been part of the BMW Group since 1995. Founded in 1972 by Charles “Chuck” Pelly in Malibu, the independent studio had a reputation for innovative design, particularly in the field of ergonomics. Clients included Otis Elevator Company, Nokia, Adidas and Siemens as well as BMW, which acquired Designworks in 1995 after nearly a decade of collaboration. The studio still operates a robust consultancy side (it’s designed a variety of consumer and industrial products, for companies like Revlon, Panasonic, Puma and Singapore Airlines), but some of its most visionary work has been in the service of its parent company. Cross-fertilization among Designworks studios in Munich, Shanghai and California helps with this. “Global is important for us,” Robin says. “All three studios work in all spheres and share their knowledge. Designworks is windows on the world for BMW Design Group.” Designworks has been responsible for significant shifts in the luxury carmaker’s designs. It was instrumental in creating BMW’s X models — “Sport Activity Vehicles” based on the SoCal lifestyle that were BMW’s stylish answer to the SUV. And it was deeply involved in the initial development of the BMW i electric vehicles. But it’s the studio’s conceptual (i.e., not available on the market) work that is the most exciting. The BMW Group DesignworksUSA E-Patrol (Human-Drone Pursuit Vehicle) seems like something straight out of science fiction. Designed for the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge, “Highway Patrol Vehicle 2025,” this vision for an ultramodern, aerodynamic vehicle was built for speed and maneuverability, and featured integrated drone technology. More recently, Designworks played a key role in the design and development of the BMW

plays with reconfiguration, too. This shapeshifting sports vehicle has a (waterproof and durable) fabric body that alters its structure according to exterior conditions and speed, taking on an anthropomorphic quality, with an exterior that moves like skin and headlights that mimic eyelids opening and closing. “What if steel wasn’t an option?” Robin posits as the design philosophy. What keeps these far-out projects rooted in reality is a carefully calibrated relationship between man and machine. The human element always comes first at Designworks. No matter how technical a design might be, the product must serve its customer and operate on a very personal level. “Design is about creating an emotional connection,” Robin says. Heilmer agrees, adding, “There’s always this effort to bring emotion and aesthetics into the technology.” Designworks’ involvement with the Olympics is a perfect example. The studio developed a two-man bobsled for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, in which “The U.S. men’s team broke a 60-year medal drought,” says Brad Cracchiola, associate director. But the racing wheelchairs used in the 2016 Paralympic Games posed an even bigger design challenge. “The wheelchair is a very intimate piece of equipment for the athlete,” Cracchiola says. Involving the athletes themselves throughout the two-year process, Designworks carefully studied how team members used their wheelchairs, and determined each racer’s individual needs. Cracchiola and his team hit on a mix of high-tech design, ergonomics and customization (custom body molds and 3-D printed gloves, for example) to completely reimagine the mobility device. “We reinvented the wheelchair,” Cracchiola says with pride. Not just what athletes race, but how. Not just the shape of a car, but the experience of driving it. What technologies will be available decades from now, and how will they ultimately serve the people that rely on them? These are the questions Designworks asks. And in answering them, designers look beyond the blueprint to something more visceral, anchored by flesh and blood and emotion. ‘‘Design

is a personal expression. The best style represents one’s personality and interests,” says Ojai designer River Sauvageau, whose own eclectic style tends toward Bohemian. “Living in a small town with a reputation for being artistic, we are not relegated to following the dictates of fashion.” Sauvageau is a creative force in Ojai. Her downtown design studio is a hub of activity, where she creates a wide variety of unique purses, bags and other carryalls. She also designs tipis, has been a costume designer for local (and other) theater productions and is the artistic director behind the colorful chalk street mandala for Ojai Day, the annual community art project celebrating 25 years in October. Raised in New York’s Hudson River Valley and Montreal, Canada, by FrenchCanadian parents, Sauvageau (whose first language was French) fell under the spell of Ojai in 1977. She moved to the valley a year later. “I fell in love with the mountains, the fresh running water, swimming holes, hot springs, wilderness and the beautiful relationships I found among the people who lived together in this small town,” she said.

“I witnessed people helping each other and being a part of each other’s lives in a way that I had not experienced before.” She dug right into the artistic groove of her adopted home. She opened her first retail space in 1990. She moved to her current and sixth Studio Sauvageau location, tucked behind the Arcade near the fountain, a year and a half ago. The New Age-y space is filled with a kaleidoscope of washable fabric bags that include, but are not limited to, her sturdily constructed eyeglass cases, coin purses, handbags and even wine sleeves. There are lots of choices for intrepid travelers as well, including passport wallets, backpacks and a line of luggage that includes carpetbags in tapestry fabrics, harking back to earlier modes of travel gear, for weekend jaunts. Two 8-foot-tall papier-mâché pieces — “Tree Man” and “Tree Woman” — framing the front of the studio are popular with passersby wanting to take selfies. Sauvageau and her friend Evergreen Hericks made them. She also worked with local feng shui consultant Maria Lopez on the two-room studio painted six different colors. “Maria is wonderful with colors and we chose a color palette for the studio that took the space and transformed it into a little jewel,” Sauvageau noted. When defining style for her products, Sauvageau realized that what she loved and wanted to create were “classic shapes that worked practically.” In other words, functional style. The studio and website showcase many oneof-a-kind bags and limited-edition styles made on the premises. All the designs are original. Sauvageau makes the patterns, does the cutting, chooses the fabrics, steams and stuffs, with the help of seamstress Carolina, who has been sewing for Sauvageau for 16 years. Her onsite fabric stash is conveniently stacked and ready for her “hands off!” cutting table filled with works in progress, which she admits visitors are tempted to touch. Loyal Studio Sauvageau customers and fans, some of whom span three generations, tell her that the bags get compliments wherever they go. They also tease her about the durability, saying: “You shouldn’t make these so well, I’ve had mine for five, 10, 20 years and it still looks like new.” (She suggests they can always buy another one.) First-time customers on a budget often return as well.

“They buy a change purse and come back, sometimes years later, and tell me, ‘This is the best change purse I’ve ever had. So now I’m back for a bag,’ ” Sauvageau notes. There is no shortage of inspiration for the baby boomer. “I am inspired every year when we make the Ojai Day Mandala. I work with an amazing group of women artists to conceptualize and plan the public art project. I am inspired by working with others to make art.” Sauvageau’s personal style at home is eclectic, a mix of antiques, vintage pieces and bold and colorful art. Her home is painted a creamy yellow and smoky coral highlighted with two walls in grass green. “I like being surrounded by these colors, and most people who come to my home say that the colors make the place happy. The colors are reminiscent of lemons and oranges in the spring against the verdant green the rain brings!” she noted. I asked the designer about advice she had for other entrepreneurs. “Business is about relationships. Care for your people, both employees and customers, and realize that you are the creator of your own paradigm. I’ve been advised to be more ‘businesslike,’ and that might not be bad advice, but the most interesting small businesses are the ones where you are intrigued by the persona and product and comfortable enough to explore them and become a customer.” She also suggests taking “all the advice you can get and use what resonates, because you are creating your own reality in your own business culture.” For the past decade, Sauvageau has also been making ceremonial tipis used for tribal gatherings and healing ceremonies. Most are 28 feet in diameter. She’s made about 18 for groups throughout California. Her own purse of choice is always changing, but currently she’s carrying the Small Cyrena Tote. “It’s not too big, and because of its open design, I can always throw in my water bottle or, sometimes, even my little Chihuahua Finn. STYLE Yoga mom meets Mother Necessity in YogaBerries. BY EMILY DODI

I

n 2014, when yoga instructor Valerie Pike was getting ready to make a yoga DVD for kids, she looked around for high-quality, affordable yoga pants that the kids could wear in the video. “My daughter Sydney was tired of wearing tight, uncomfortable jeans to do yoga,” Pike remembers. She discovered that it was almost impossible to find girls’ yoga pants that matched the adult variety in style, comfort and durability. “So, I decided to make them,” says Pike. The DVD, The Traveling YogaBerries: Rainforest Adventure Yoga, features Sydney and other girls wearing yoga pants that Pike sewed herself. The girls loved them not only because they were really cute, but because they were also super comfortable. Pike’s yoga pants were far and away a better fit for doing yoga than the constricting jeans and leggings the girls had been used to wearing in yoga class. The girls kept the yoga pants after the DVD was completed and started wearing them to school. “They were getting lots of compliments,” Pike remembers. Sydney and the other girls began wearing the yoga pants everywhere — play dates, dance class, even to bed. They were so soft, comfortable and fun. “They wanted to wear their yoga pants for days on end,” Pike says. “The only complaint I received from other parents was that their daughters never wanted to take them off.” Pike realized she was onto something. She selected fabrics with Sydney’s help and started making her first line of YogaBerries pants. “I named them YogaBerries because yoga and berries are both healthy for you, and we promote a healthy lifestyle,” Pike explains. She put them on Amazon for sale and they sold out quickly. “I started producing 50 pairs at a time, then

100 pairs. They sold out as soon as I put them on Amazon,” she continues. Today, the pants are cut and sewn by a company in Costa Mesa that can make 1,000 pairs of YogaBerries yoga pants at a time. “That’s a lot of pants!” Pike says with a giggle. To date she has sold pants to people as far away as Alaska and North Carolina, and the business keeps expanding. The YogaBerries line has featured a few tops, a bikini, headbands and other apparel, and Pike is considering making jackets and accessories like water bottle covers. Yoga pants, however, remain the heart of the YogaBerries clothing line. Due to popular demand, Pike has added some yoga pants in women’s sizes, too. (Mommy & Me yoga, anyone?) Pike still adheres to the same principles she set forth when she sewed her very first pair of pants. It’s all about “the fit, the fabric and the feel.” Made from a high-performance blend of polyester, spandex and nylon, the pants have four-way stretch, a no-roll elastic waist, and are moisture-wicking and quick drying. That makes them great athletic wear, not only for yoga but for dance, gymnastics, skateboarding, playtime or just hanging out. Pike adds, “They are saltwater- and chlorine-resistant, so they make great coverups for after swimming, surfing or paddle boarding, too.” In addition to being durable and comfortable, YogaBerries are prized for their colorful fabrics. “As bright as berries,” cheers the company’s website. Mermaid, for instance, the company’s most popular line, features deeply saturated colors that shine and shimmer with fish-scale motifs. Pike shops for fabrics online and also at the Los Angeles Textile Show, but she often designs her own. “I come up with ideas and then check online to see if there’s anything similar out there. If I don’t see anything, I go ahead and design it. }}

One of the latest fabrics I designed was inspired by brightly striped Mexican blankets.” Her wide range of designs include everything from Southwestern motifs and psychedelic tie-dye to photo-real images of animals, a starry sky and California beach scenes. Coming soon will be desert-inspired designs to coincide with the next Traveling YogaBerries video, which takes place in Joshua Tree. YogaBerries allows Pike to combine many of her loves: art, fashion, yoga and helping kids live a happy, peaceful and healthy lifestyle. She recently began a YogaBerries anti-bullying campaign whose logo features two “yoga berries,” a blackberry and a strawberry, and the slogan “Be a buddy! Not a bully!” Pike reinforces the YogaBerries philosophy in everything she does and sells. That includes her line of clothing and her Traveling YogaBerries DVDs, which teach about animals and the environment as well as yoga. Pike also makes nontoxic candles and writes books, including a children’s book and a cookbook, which she sells on yogabyvalerie.com.

Pike still finds time to teach yoga classes privately as well as at the Barranca Vista Center in Ventura, and at special events like the Sedona Yoga Festival. In every class she tries to make meditation, mindfulness and yoga fun and accessible to kids. One of her favorite things is when a child exclaims, “I don’t want to do yoga!” Pike explains how she usually handles the situation. “I’ll say, ‘OK. Then just watch.’ Not even 10 minutes will go by before they’re joining in and having fun.” Fun is the operative word when it comes to YogaBerries, and it’s all geared toward helping kids enjoy a happy, healthy lifestyle. Harrison is a big believer in the world having less “stuff” in it. Albeit a serious dilemma for a designer to have, this same ethos, coupled with his passion for design, spurred him to create something of real value.“Finally,” Harrison shares, “I broke when I realized there was a way to create a product that was timeless and durable. I wanted to do my own version of menswear, and woodwork, with good energy behind it. Don’t get me wrong! I love stuff that people are creating,” he added. “I love trading, and the circle of influence that happens in a creative community.” The logo and brand idea came to Harrison on a stereotypical visit to rainy Portland, where he was learning how to reshape old skateboards and repurpose them into cruisers (a shape that has become very popular). “I started very simply, by selling to friends,” Harrison said. “At first, Stormy Monday was just a fun hobby. I had, for all intents and purposes, dropped out of the workforce, taking a muchneeded break from designing for large, corporate clothing companies.” “Stormy Monday complements the California lifestyle,” Harrison continued. “You can do everything in this uniform. Work in the shop all day, hike a trail, and then go out to dinner! That is, if you keep yourself clean or clean enough, you can pull it off.” He laughs. Since Stormy Monday’s humble beginning, Harrison has expanded his brand to include cutting boards, T-shirts, beanies, a chambray work shirt and jeans. “I think my aesthetic, that all-American, vintage workwear, came from the clothes my seamstress mother dressed me in as a boy. I was a wild kid, and I used to tear through clothes, so my mom made sure I was

in clothes that were built to last: thick leather work boots and Levi’s — shrink-to fit 501s — a uniform that has stayed with me, one way or another.” Harrison takes pride in that everything he produces is made in the USA. Stormy Monday jeans are made in Los Angeles. The shirts are sewn from organic cotton and the denim is sourced from the 112-year-old Cone Mills White Oak plant in Greensboro, North Carolina. “I was so inspired by the way they still use the original shuttle machines that they used to make the denim for Lee and Wrangler, all those years ago.” Harrison created a special pocket lining for his jeans, using old military sleeping-bag liners that he found in a surplus warehouse. “Of course it makes for so many more steps and is totally inefficient,” Harrison smiles. “But that’s not my point. I have to make something special and unique.” Native Californian Harrison grew up as the quintessential surf/skater rat with a lucky streak. In between riding BMX, snowboarding, surfing and skating, Harrison was always with a pen and paper, creating art. Straight out of high school Harrison landed a packing job in a warehouse belonging to surf company Quicksilver. “I had some graphic ideas for T-shirts and I took a chance and turned in my drawings. I got paid $1,000 for four drawings, which was more money than I had ever seen!” Quicksilver asked for more drawings; they turned out to be best-sellers. One thing led to another, and the kid from the warehouse became a designer. Harrison says, “I remember

leaving those design meetings not knowing what on earth I was doing. I had no formal training. It was a fluke, a lucky break that they took a chance on me.” After Quicksilver, Harrison went on to design for Volcum, another well-known streetwear brand. Today, Harrison lives in his beloved hills of Santa Barbara, where he finds the close proximity to the ocean and the mountains especially inspiring. He shares his Ventura wood shop with two other locals, Darrick and Lana Rasmussen of Killscrow (killscrow.com), who make wood furniture, while Harrison shapes his skateboards and makes his cutting boards. Harrison is still a surf rat at heart. En route to his shop, he always makes sure he fits in his surfing at C Street and Emma Wood Beach.
