EDITOR’S NOTE
WHITE SPACE IN A BLACK HOLE IT’S HAPPENED EVERY YEAR SINCE 2011 and our first Style-themed issue. In the lead-up to March, our editorial calendar takes on the daunting aura of a black hole: vacant, impenetrable, frighteningly unfamiliar as it spins through worlds I’ll never know. The empty page stares at me. I stare back. Nothing happens. The clock ticks and the days and weeks pass and I start to think that maybe this is it—maybe this will be the year for a Ventana version of the Beatles’ White Album cover. Just an empty editorial space. Then, one by one, the pitches drift into my universe. Fashion-forward friends like Naz Madaen introduce brilliant ideas to illuminate my path. Because as I said on this page in the spring of 2011: I don’t do fashion; I wear clothes. This magazine is a collaborative effort, to be sure—and never more so than now. Working with Harper Point Photography (harperpoint.com) and several local businesses, Naz managed to corral four of Ventura County’s “Women of Substance” (cover + p. 32) for a stylized photo shoot at Acacia Mansion in Ojai. That’s one way to smarten up a spring fashion pictorial and add layers of depth to this Style-themed issue. Here’s another: On page 11 we profile LeslieRinchen Wongmo, a contemporary American textile artist and the “caretaker” of appliqué thangka, a 500-yearold Tibetan art form that weaves tradition and philosophy into something far more profound than “pretty things,” as she put it.
Leslie’s work inspired even the Dalai Lama, and with his encouragement to share her knowledge with the Western world, the Oxnard-based artist began teaching as a thangka master—the only Westerner, and the only woman, to do so. Her story takes us from Boston to Dharamsala to Milan before concluding within county lines. Closer to home, Ventura native Chris West (p. 19) channels his childhood passion for playing cowboys and Indians into uniquely stylish leather goods—think upcycled cowboy boot purses, Western wine totes, fringed chap skirts, colorful cuffs. Then there’s our interview with Vanner Hats founder Courtney Ellzey (p. 27). I wasn’t sure what to expect from this one. Really, how much can be said about hats? I use them to block the sun or conceal a tangled nest of bedhead. Courtney, on the other hand, sees beyond their functionality. Crowned with a well-worn corduroy cab driver’s hat, she gallops from topics like gypsy spirit and cowgirl chic to Navy Seal wives and breast cancer awareness. In her world, the hat is a hallmark of fearless style, a celebration of the warrior within. And her company, she explains, is not simply about looking good—it’s about women empowering women. Turns out my utilitarian relationship with hats isn’t the end of the story. But this is the end of the page. And as you can see, we did manage to pop out of that black hole. Hope you like what we found on the other side. – Matt Katz mattk@ventanamonthly.com

PROFILE LESLIE RINCHEN-WONGMO
ALL ABOUT INTENTION
Creating art with a purpose, appliqué thangka master Leslie-Rinchen Wongmo weaves the fabric of the universe and serves the Buddhist dharma — one stitch at a time.
BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER
LESLIE RINCHEN-WONGMO NEVER INTENDED TO BE A FIBER arts pioneer. The thangka stitching artist—one of only a handful of people who still practice the traditional Tibetan art form, and the only woman passing the tradition on to others—was pursuing a career in social and economic development. She’d completed her Masters in Urban Planning (she also has an MBA, both from UCLA) and was living in Boston, working in affordable housing development, when she decided to take a year off and travel to Dharamsala, India. “I was going to have an adventure,” she recalls. “But I wanted to be a part of the community instead of just pass through, so I decided to do some volunteer work.” In 1992, she contacted the Central Tibetan Administration and was invited to participate on a project designing the first census of Tibetans in exile. Living in Dharamsala, she became, as she had hoped, immersed in the community, working with other professionals (including a retired Indian census official), getting to know her neighbors, and studying Buddhist philosophy. Her work also afforded her the opportunity to learn in-depth about Tibetan culture and traditions. “While working, I went on a tour of different traditional art centers,” she says. “Wood carving, bronze casting, }}

thangka painting, carpet weaving.” Visiting the Norbulingka Institute, a training center for Tibetan artists, was a transformative experience: “I saw this artwork, and it touched me. And I thought, ‘I just have to do this.’ At the time, I didn’t know I was changing the course of my life.” A thangka (pronounced tonka) is a religious scroll picture—usually depicting the Buddha deity, an iconic scene, or a mandala—used for meditation and sometimes instruction. The more common form of thangka is painted on cotton or silk. Less well known is the appliqué thangka, or thangka stitching, made by sewing individual pieces of silk and brocade together to render an image, often embroidering certain details to lend them texture and prominence. It is this 500-yearold art form, tradition, and philosophy to which Rinchen-Wongmo has since devoted her life. “I liked that it was somehow communicating the Buddhist philosophy without the words, being with the love and wisdom without … depending so much on the rational brain,” she explains. Rinchen-Wongmo became an apprentice to appliqué master T. G. Dorjee Wangdu at the Norbulingka Institute, and spent nearly a decade immersed in a very Tibetan way of thinking—and doing. Norbulingka is a trade school as well as an art institute, and students there learn to create monks’ robes, temple decorations, and other practical items. But for many Tibetans, the lines between art and craft, practical life and religious devotion, are nonexistent. “For the Tibetans in that world, everything we were working on was for the dharma. You live and breathe it. … You’re always on a spiritual path. Art with a purpose— that is true of Tibetan culture. There is no art for art’s sake.” Interestingly, while Rinchen-Wongmo worked alongside other women, it was only men who were doing the teaching. “In Tibet, it was only men working in workshops on thangkas,” she recalls. “In Dharamsala, many of my fellow apprentices were women, but none of the women have risen to running their own workshops. Most of the masters are men.” Rinchen-Wongmo admits that she’s not sure if that remains true today, but one thing she does know: when she first started running her online classes as a thangka master, she was the only Westerner, and the only woman, to do so. Which isn’t to say that she encountered resis-

tance in her artistic and spiritual pursuits. “My teacher supported me. He saw that I was serious about learning.” She was even granted a meeting with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who upon seeing her most accomplished thangka exclaimed, “Oh, it is very well done!” He encouraged her to share her knowledge of this relatively unknown art form with others. “I wanted to take this art into the Western world,” she recalls. “So I asked him, ‘What should I know? How should I discern appropriate opportunities?’ I wanted to make sure that what I was doing was held in positive regard. I didn’t want to offend this culture that had given me this gift.” His answer: It’s all about intention. In 2001, nine years after beginning her journey into Tibetan culture and art, RinchenWongmo left Dharamsala for Milan. “It felt like the closing of a chapter,” she explains. “It was time to be in my own culture again.” After another nine years in Italy she finally came back to the United States, settling in Oxnard in 2010 and opening up her studio, Threads of Awakening, in Channel Islands Harbor. She offers workshops and other classes (including a weekly Laughter Practice, which just started in February at Oxnard Beach Park), and teaches a growing number of apprentices through her online instruction program. She’s also started writing a book on appliqué thangka: its origins and history, as well as a detailed description of the construction process, interwoven with Rinchen-Wongmo’s own personal experience. There’s never been a book about this particular Tibetan art form, so once again, she’s stitching together her own path—and serving the dharma along the way. And of course, there are the thangkas themselves, which continue to weave their spell over her, deepening her artistic experience and spiritual life. “When I first started teaching, I thought that I was just making pretty things,” Rinchen-Wongmo says. “But it’s a major spiritual experience. These images carry the energy of the centuries of practice. They carry the teachings with them.” And now, thanks to Rinchen-Wongmo, those teachings have been carried to us as well. v

ABOUT TOWN Buckles, belts, boots... Southwestern accents await the creative touch of leather crafter Chris West, seen here in his Ventura workshop.
THE NEW WEST A local leather crafter’s wild ride.
C
BY KATERI WOZNY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIANA SCHULZE
hris West is a man whose imagination runs wild. He is a big kid at heart, a leather crafter whose colorful home studio has a magic carpet bed hanging from the ceiling and a ladder ascending into a secret attic. Outside, there’s a tree house and a walkway bridge over a small pond where fish swim and a shy turtle hides out. It is a captivating scene. But what really draws you in is the smell of fresh leather. “Once that smell gets into your head, you never forget it,” says West, a 54-yearold Ventura native who has been working with leather since childhood. “To this day,
the first thing people say is, ‘I love the smell of the leather.’” In 2011, West founded his eponymous company, Chris West Originals, and got serious about selling his one-of-a-kind designs, which reflect Native American, Southwestern, and Western influences and make use of upcycled materials like harness leather, old cowboy chaps, textiles, buckles and reins, belts, spur straps, and saddle bags. “For me, scavenging is fun,” he says of prowling swap meets, yard sales, and the Internet in search of usable items. “It’s about making something that is resourceful and original.” }}

Growing up in the Ventura hills, West’s creativity and dedication were influenced by his surroundings. His mother, Beverly, was an art major who sewed her own dresses; his father, Wolfgang, was an engineer who instilled the values of hard work and organization. “When my mother would give me fabric scraps, I came to appreciate textures,” he says. “My parental influences have to do with who I am and what I do now.” West was also influenced by the classic westerns and science fiction TV shows he’d watch with his brother. The two would play cowboys and Indians in the local hills, armed with .22 rifles as they searched for arrowheads, bones, and fossils. But it was his mother’s old boyfriend, also a leather crafter, who gave him his start, leaving behind scraps of leather for young Chris to practice with. “That was a pivotal moment in my life,” he recalls, “because I later started making things for other people—things I could sell.” When it comes to fashion industry influences, he looks to designer John Dennis, an Ojai resident whose company, Sam Roberts LA, sells handmade and handpicked vintage clothing, cowboy hats, jewelry, and purses. “John has been very encouraging and influential. We help each other out,” says West. “He’s taught me the ins and outs of the fashion world.” Chris West Originals include boot purses, fringed chap skirts, buckaroo and frontier bags with bullet shell casings, custom leather cuffs, wine totes made from cowboy boots, wrist wear, leather/serape cuffs, and pony purses made from soft, smooth leather. Prices range from $150 for a small serape bag to $250 for a larger bag, depending on how much sterling silver is embedded. “The serape bags are the most popular item because the colors are so bright and vivid,” West explains. “It’s tightly woven, and you can instantly tell that it comes

from decades past, yet the colors are still retained.” On average, it takes between two and five hours to create a single piece. According to West, his Palomino horse, Magnum, teaches him the necessary patience. “He’s taught me not to rush … Horses pick up on your energy easily.” West has also learned to listen to women about their fashion wants and needs: supple leathers, long fringes, light weight designs with no plastics. “I have learned that practicality is important to women if they are going to spend a lot of money on something,” he says. “I like making fashions that are new and different, and that combine ruggedness with femininity.” West peddles his designs at fiddle festivals, country music performances, the Santa Ynez Valley Vaquero Show and Sale, and other similar venues. His wife, Claudette, helps boost interest by wearing Chris West Originals at shows. “The first show I ever did was at a street fair in Santa Ynez,” West recalls, “and I remember getting mobbed by women who wanted to buy my boot purses. I was thrilled at the reaction.” In the future, he sees his business expanding into the high-end retail shops of outdoorsy hot spots like Santa Fe, New Mexico; Aspen, Colorado; and Park City, Utah. He also hopes to have his work featured in select fashion shows. “I want to establish relationships where they can get one-of-a-kind pieces and receive a nice return for themselves,” he explains. But it is the customers’ thrilled reaction that gets Chris most fired up. As he puts it, “It feels good to come up with designs that women are really excited about.” v For more information, log on to chriswestoriginals.com or follow him on Instagram @chriswestoriginals.

CONVERSATION
LEAVE IT ON
Vanner Hats founder Courtney Ellzey on military wives, women empowering women, and hats as a conduit to tell people’s stories. INTERVIEW BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK PRINCIPAL PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELIOT LEE HAZEL
C
ourtney Ellzey is a fashionista, a photographer, a designer, and a mother of two. She’s also the keeper of a gypsy spirit who recently decided to channel her “inner creative soul” by designing and importing handmade hats from Ecuador. She named her company Vanner Hats after the Gypsy horse, first used in the mid-1800s by nomads pulling their vardos around the British Isles. But her roots are pure Texan, having grown up in the panhandle, in a small town of just 7,000. A military wife, Courtney ended up in California some 20 years ago, and this is where she found a kindred spirit in the women around her— women who, as she puts it, “represent the true essence of strength, compassion, and integrity.” We met with the now 43-year-old beauty to discuss her Ventura-based hat business, and to learn more about the Navy Seal wives who represent it as Vanner Ambassadors. LESLIE A. WESTBROOK: You’ve said that hats act as “a conduit to tell people’s stories.” So what’s yours? COURTNEY ELLZEY: Oh, boy. Let me think about that one. Okay, here goes. For as long as I can remember, I have had this burning desire and obsession to be creative. If I am not creating, I am studying those who are creative and creating. My story begins with my Grandmama LZ, who was a free gypsy spirit. Her spirit seems to be at the essence of Vanner Hats. She was an artist, a writer, a poet, a Southern Belle-turned-chic-cowgirl, a mother to five, a feminist, a philanthropist, and an advocate for Hispanic-U. S. relations in the panhandle of Texas. She was also a ranch hand and a seeker of knowledge. A true pioneer. So, I’m a gypsy from the Texas panhandle, with wanderlust and a burning desire to create, collaborate, travel, be inspired, and inspire. LAW: Why hats? CE: I would like to be part of making the world a happier place, one “crown” at a time. What better way to connect and adorn those on their journey than with a crown? People feel different when they place a hat on their head. }}

MARCH 2016
I am a Texan and a country girl at heart. I grew up with hats. My family all wore cowboy hats. My mother adorned me with bonnets, bandanas, and Easter hats. I got into hats when I entered college, and it was a natural progression from there. An outfit didn’t quite seem complete until I graced it with a hat. Perhaps it is the introvert in me that prefers to move through the day somewhat inconspicuously, without too much exposure. My hats are imported from Ecuador, from a woman entrepreneur who is also about empowering women and utilizing sustainable products. These things are extremely important to me. My long-term plan is to learn how to design and make a handmade hat line. But, motherhood only allows for so much at the moment: I have two children and they come first. LAW: Do you have a particular favorite? CE: I have had a cab driver’s hat since the birth of my son, a green corduroy Kangol that is now is a dingy brownish color with holes in it. It has become an appendage; everyone knows that I am to be cremated with that hat. I hope to replicate it for Vanner. LAW: Tell us about your Vanner Ambassadors. CE: My business means more to me than simply looking good in a hat and making hat sales, so I created Vanner Ambassadors. From the beginning, Vanner Ambassadors is something that I decided needed to be an integral part of my business plan. An Ambassador can be a group or an individual with a story that inspires and that people can relate to. I want to share people’s stories and triumphs in life as a way of giving back. I also photograph them and share their stories on my website. The first Vanner Ambassadors are a group of ten Navy Seal wives who I bonded with and who inspire me. Only other women who have lived that life can relate. This is a very significant part of me, as my first husband was a Navy Seal. The next Vanner Ambassador will be Shaney Jo Darden, who founded the nonprofit Keep A Breast Foundation and
educates people about breast cancer awareness. She is an amazing human and I can’t wait to share her remarkable story. The ambassadors can also be men, children… anyone who has a powerful story to tell and who is doing great things to make the world a better place. It is extremely important to me that Vanner stands for something more than just the hats. LAW: Do you wear a hat everyday? CE: Pretty much. I am a low maintenance hair girl and I don’t want to be bothered by my hair, but I don’t want to cut it off either. LAW: Any special hat tips? CE: People who are not hat people always say that they do not look good in hats. This is not true. Everyone looks good in a hat! It’s just a matter of choosing the right style and size, but most importantly feeling comfortable and confident enough to walk out of the house wearing one and owning it. For dressier, more substantial hats, I recommend storing them in a hatbox. For the hat that you would like to wear to the horse barn, I say throw caution to the wind and not fret about it. Wear it, abuse it… don’t let it own you. LAW: Who are your favorite fashion designers or icons? CE: There are so many talented designers out there. Can I just say that I have a newfound respect for fashion designers? There is so much that goes into designing, production, shows, marketing… That being said, I would say my Top 10 favorites are Ralph Lauren, Yohji Yamamoto, Stella McCartney, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Diane Von Furstenberg, Roberto Cavalli, Tom Ford, Esteban Cortazar, and Angie Scott. LAW: What inspires you? CE: Number one? My children. Other people—human connections. And lately I am really into culinary inspiration. Have you ever seen [the Netflix documentary] Chef’s Table? Oh, man! Architecture, dance, fashion, music, travel, interior design, photography, collaborations… I am completely obsessed with great fashion and architecture magazines. One of my favorite things to do is go into bookstores. One day, I will design a home built around all of my books and magazines. LAW: One of my favorite songs is Joe Cocker’s “You Can Leave Your Hat On.” Are you familiar with it? CE: (Laughing) That’s from the movie 9 ½ Weeks, with Kim Basinger. I was in the eighth grade then, and that scene with her and her hat put that song on the map. I wanted to be her! LAW: Do you leave your hat on? CE: Sometimes hat on, sometimes hat off…

What can you do today that you couldn’t do a year ago? I can be at this photo shoot knowing that someone else is with my son and that he is safe. What do you like about yourself? How I can reach out and help others because I’ve been humbled so many times. What impact do you want to make on the world? To make a difference in the world of autism. Charlotte Rousse Blush Dress $30, Buffalo Exchange Gold and Diamond Necklace and Earrings (call for price), Van Gundy Jewelers Zhena Musyka (right) was a single mom with six dollars to her name when she founded Zhena’s Gypsy Tea. She’s since grown the business into a multi-million dollar company while strictly maintaining fair trade business practices. She has been named one of the Top 50 Women in Business and received numerous awards for entrepreneurship and social responsibility in business. A mother of two, Musyka recently completed her first book, “Life by the Cup,” and created her own publishing platform, which emphasizes philanthropic missions. What can you do today that you couldn’t do last year? Forgive myself more easily. What do you like about yourself? My ability to “laugh it off,” to not take things so seriously. CONVERSATION
Jeanine Singer Bair (left), the owner of Le Beau salon, is living her childhood dream of being a hairstylist. But she’s had her share of hard times, too. A mother of five, she’s the primary caretaker for her severely autistic 23-year-old son. Every day produces challenges, yet she remains joyful as she advocates for her son and works to raise awareness of autism. Bair has volunteered with NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and participated with the Sheriff Department’s Crisis Intervention Team with the Sheriff’s department over the past two decades, and hopes to form an Autism Crisis Center in Ventura County. Beyond that, she’d like to serve on the Behavioral Health Board as a voice for autism.
ASHLEY BAUTISTA (right) is constantly on the go. Charming, soft-spoken, and preternaturally humble, she’s been named one of the Top 50 Women in Business and a member of the 40 Under 40 club, celebrating up-and-coming young business people. She’s sat on a slew of community and civic boards, all while homeschooling her four rambunctious boys. She’s currently the assistant Den Leader and membership chair for their Boy Scout troop, as well as the new interface between the Ventura Police department and the community. This month, Bautista is launching a Citizen’s Police Academy to help residents better understand police work. What can you do today that you couldn’t do a year ago? I am empowered. A year ago my passions were on hold. Also, I never imagined I’d be taking pictures in a mansion, in the rain, with an Alpaca! What do you owe yourself? Not losing sight of my own dreams. What impact do you want to have on the world? To raise my four wild and sweet sons to be loving, kind, honest, hardworking men that will give back through service to others.
Floral Maxi with Carwash Hem $65, Goldies
MANDY MARTINEZ (above) is a bit nervous. Not because of the lights and cameras, but because she has to get to her volunteer meeting. The vivacious mother of two has spent recent years working as the production manager at Petunia Pickle Bottom, traveling the world, and serving on the executive board of Pierpont School’s PTA. Her greatest joy came from donating a kidney to her father. He’s now healthy, and together they plan to pay it forward by assisting an orphanage in Mexico. Martinez is currently working to put on a Special Needs Prom—a meeting for that endeavor is why she’s got to run. But first, a casual stroll down the catwalk and a few quick questions… What do you owe yourself? A break! It’s okay to not be so busy. What impact do you want to have on the world? I want to set a good example of care and generosity, to teach my kids care and concern and to spread kindness. I want to live a life my kids are proud of.
