EDITOR’S NOTE

THE CUBAN SHUFFLE

I

f you’ve spent any time at Chez Jay, in Santa Monica, you know it’s not the sort of place that inspires orderly conversation. And since political chitchat tends to boil over in even the most subdued settings, this ramshackle drinkery was clearly the wrong forum for a late-night discussion—with a recent Cuban immigrant whose family, I later learned, was still stuck on the island, desperate for freedom—about the longevity of Fidel Castro. My point was simple (or so I thought): The fact that Fidel had outlasted every U.S. president since Eisenhower amazed me. Perhaps I said it impressed me. Regardless, I should have eschewed any word with positive connotations; my drinking partner’s wounds were too deep, his reality too distant for a California native to comprehend. I learned something about tact that night, and managed to stumble back to the house where I was staying unscathed, not to mention a little wiser—and a lot more curious about the tropical enigma 90 miles off the U.S. mainland. Ventura photographer Bill Hendricks (cover + page 41) recently returned from his 55th trip to this largest of Caribbean islands. Twenty-plus years of visiting a place “stopped in time,” as he describes it. Consider the changes the world has seen since Castro took power in 1959, or even just here in this country since Bill’s first trip in December of 1993. A new generation has come of age in the dust cloud of 9/11. Longstanding conventions are crumbling. Even the American Dream—it must seem so flimsy to these modern young people. Absorb student loans: there’ll be a job waiting. Take on a mortgage: housing prices will keep rising.

MAY 2014

We’ve seen the bubble burst. We’ve gawked at the fallibility of our leaders. Currencies around the world are on the verge of collapse, and high-level secrets are virtually impossible to keep. (Game over, Donald Sterling.) But it’s garden-variety drama for millenials. This is a generation weaned on the Internet, accustomed to dramatic new levels of transparency. So, with much of the conventional wisdom proving to be foolishness, and an ever-increasing number of authority figures proving to be fools, they are adapting, evolving. The spirit of innovation is flourishing— out of necessity. And this is the true American Dream: creativity, hard work, and building a future out of the rubble of a broken past. As Fidel said, “A revolution is not a trail of roses … [it] is a fight to the death between the future and the past.” The world is reshuffling to make sense of all this. Or in places like Cuba, it seems, trying desperately to avoid the inevitable—hence the tightly controlled Internet, the low number of connections and limited bandwidth, the censorship and prohibitive cost. My intent was to tie all this babble in to this issue’s travel theme, to reflect on changes I’ve experienced at certain places around the world, including Ventura County. I wanted to point out Hendricks’ propensity for portraits over landscape photos and share some of the ways flesh-and-blood people, not products, drive this magazine’s editorial focus as well. But the bottom of the page is gaining on me. And there’s too much to write anyway, too many tangential paths to wander. To be sure, I don’t have an answer to the “lyrical riddle” of Cuba, just a boatload of questions inspired by an island frozen in time. – Matt Katz mattk@ventanamonthly.com

& art

activism The global reach of Tana Vivian

BY AMBER LENNON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RUDY LOUPIAS

ne of the greatest gifts of travel is a new perspective. Like reading a good book that takes you on a journey through the grim and glorious, travel offers an unfiltered taste of the human experience in all its resplendent beauty. Whether bobbing around on crystalline seas sipping umbrella drinks or backpacking through dusty byways, its imprint on our souls leaves us irrevocably changed. For local artist and social activist Tana Vivian, the travel experience comes to her—or, more accurately, through her. She’s not a seasoned traveller per se, having traveled to just a few foreign countries. She’s a bit like those sci-fi characters who receive psychic information just by touching a photograph or a piece of jewelry. The stories and struggles of distant cultures seem to come to Vivian through visceral osmosis and won’t let her rest until she paints them. She might catch a glimpse of some threadbare children in Africa on a magazine cover, and the aching sensation of hunger and grief eclipses her heart as if she were there with them in the stoop of that mud hut, squinting into a relentless sun. So she unleashes the burden of starvation, child labor, and other global issues onto a blank canvas in layers and layers of red, yellow, and blue. The process is cathartic. It’s mysterious. And it happens to translate into some downright impressive artwork. Standing in her West Ventura home studio surrounded by a room of painted stories, you would think that Vivian had spent countless hours in foreign lands with her subjects. The nuance of expression, the curve of a child’s smile, and eyes filled with heartache and hope—her art communicates some of the often-avoided aspects of travelling to other parts of the world. “My gift is capturing emotion, and there happens to be some paint involved,” she laughs, pushing a wild strand of red hair from her forehead.

Drawing inspiration from photorealist painter Chuck Close and Austrian abstract painter and architect Hunterwasser, Vivian’s pieces are both playful and raw. Up close, the eye sees an incomprehensible collage of color and brush strokes, but from afar, an image emerges as real and honest as the stories that inspired them. She says she’s not afraid to break some of the rules of her craft, such as painting over black or waiting a whole year to add another layer of creation. Some “finished” pieces have been repainted four times, and Vivian complies with each round of changes with the patience that any veteran traveler has learned to cultivate. A painting is considered finished only when the essence of emotion has truly been captured. At the heart of Vivian’s artwork is her passion for raising awareness about local and international social issues. “When I was six, Save the Children commercials would always bother me,” she recalls. “I get really torn up about the number of kids who are dying in Ethiopia. It’s as if they are my people.” Certainly her name, Tana, is a curious correlation to Ethiopia—Lake Tana is the headwaters of the Blue Nile, and when fate led her to teach English overseas in her early twenties, she lived less than a mile from her Ethiopian namesake. “The woman I lived with runs the largest private school in that area, and she used to always say, ‘You are Ethiopian, you are one of us.’ And I feel that.” To bring resources, education, and healthcare to people suffering from circumstances beyond their control, Vivian’s foundation, One Child One Planet, will funnel donations and a percentage of her art sales to charitable projects both local and abroad. “I think that my role is to inspire people to care and to realize that we are tied to all these people,” she says. “Holding a space of love for people…not pity, but love. Just that changes things.” Looking into the eyes of a nameless Ethiopian woman in “Tears of Famine,” a story from thousands of miles away is revealed. No planes or passports. No exchange rates or jet lag. Just one painter with a heart that crosses oceans to capture a feeling and inspire change through art. v

KEEPING YOUR HEAD UP

May 15 to June 21 Red Brick Pizza, 4990 Telephone Rd., Ventura An exhibition featuring the art of Tana Vivian will benefit Ventura-based Projection Understanding (projectunderstanding.org). As the show’s name suggests, the artwork will be showcased on the ceiling, encouraging viewers to think outside the box and consider the world beyond. More online: facebook.com/tanavivianart TOP TO BOTTOM: Joy in Sudan, 48”x48”, oil on canvas “I believe hope sustains all things and is the precursor to change. Poverty creates hardship but it can never steal joy, hope, or love.” Ethiopian Sister, 54”x54”, oil on canvas “A young girl in southern Ethiopia just moments after learning her sister died from starvation … Ultimately, I want sales from this painting to help fund farm education in schools.” Soccer Boy, Mozambique, 64”x64”, oil on canvas “Boys in Mozambique make soccer balls out of trash. Photographer Jessica Hilltout had a goal of exchanging photos of handmade balls for more durable ones, and this piece was painted to carry the story of her project, Joy is Round, into the fine art world.” OPPOSITE: Amahli, 47”x60”, oil on canvas “This painting is of my daughter. Her name means Hope and she has family living in East Africa.”

time travelers

Travel is always an adventure. But tracing your family’s past from a century or more ago? That’s really a trip BY MARYANN HAMMERS I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO A ROCKY Mountain getaway, excited at the prospect of hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and wildlife watching. But when my plane landed, instead of heading for the hills, I detoured to the trendy Highland area, northwest of downtown Denver. Today Highland boasts gentrified homes, hip boutiques, gleaming condos, and ethnic eateries. But as I strolled the eclectic up-and-coming neighborhood, I was more interested in what it was like more than a century ago. In the late 1800s, this was Little Italy, on the wrong side of the tracks and isolated by the muddy Platte River. It was here that my great-great-grandfather Gerardo, fresh off the boat from Potenza, peddled vegetables that grew in the fertile river-bottom soil. I paused in front of a curious condominium complex called “St. Patrick’s Lofts,” with stainedglass windows and pointed steeple. This used to be St. Patrick’s Church—where Gerardo’s son Rocco married a neighbor girl, 16-year-old Antonia Santopietro. The Italian church was a few blocks away, but Rocco insisted on attending Englishspeaking St. Patrick’s, in order to better assimilate in his adopted land.

A few blocks from the church, I found the address I was looking for. There it was: a small pink house with a shrine to the Virgin Mary in the front yard. This was the home where Rocco and Antonia raised ten daughters and two sons, including my grandfather Johnny. A row of windows led to the basement where, according to family lore, Rocco made moonshine after Prohibition forced him to shutter his saloon. I had seen a blurred black-and-white photocopy of a photo of this very same home, probably taken around 1910, when it was newly built. Someone had scribbled on the original picture: “Home Sweet Home.” My family members who lived there were all long gone, but here I was. I’ve enjoyed longer, more exotic vacations, but none as fulfilling and soul satisfying as that stroll through North Denver’s Highland. Though Rocco and Antonia died before I was born, and my grandfather rarely discussed his childhood, I felt a little closer to all of them that afternoon.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK To make those kinds of discoveries on a genealogy vacation, you’ll need to do as much research as you can before you jump on a plane. Before my Denver trip, for example, I searched on Ancestry. com for census records, old city directories, and my grandfather’s WWI draft registration. From those sources, I found my ancestor’s home address. The Denver Library website had old obituaries in their newspaper archives. Using Google Earth, I knew that Interstate 25 now roars through the spot where Great-Grandfather Rocco ran his 19th Street saloon. And I had all that information before booking my plane ticket. To make the most of a genealogy vacation, first make a list of what you hope to see—whether it’s your great-grandparent’s childhood home, the church where your ancestor was baptized, or the pioneer cemetery where your family plot is located. Not sure where to start your search? “Check to see if there is a genealogical or historical society close by,” suggests Fran Bumann, president of the Ventura County Genealogical Society. “Find out if there’s a [written] town history. The local public library, churches, and courthouses can yield lots of good information, too. Try such websites as Find-a-Grave.” You can also get advice from local volunteers at the Ventura County Genealogical Society at the Camarillo Library, the Conejo Valley Genealogical Society at the Thousand Oaks Library, and the Jewish Genealogical Society of the Conejo Valley and Ventura County, as well as LDS Family History Centers in Ventura, Camarillo, and Thousand Oaks.

CALL AHEAD Don’t just show up and start knocking on doors. Many historic cemeteries, genealogic societies, and small-town libraries are open just a few days a week, staffed by volunteers with erratic schedules. Call in advance to confirm hours and make sure the people and places you plan to visit will be available and open. “I know someone who went to Devon, England to research in the Cathedral Archives, just to learn that the Keeper of the Records was out for the month due to lambing season,” says professional genealogist Pat Thomas, a Camarillo resident who has traveled to about a dozen states and Ireland in search of her own roots. (On her next trip, she’s headed to St. Charles, Missouri: “I’ll be researching the ancestors of my moth-

er’s father’s mother, who was Daniel Boone’s fourth great-granddaughter.”) “It would be terrible to get there and find out the local library was open yesterday, but not again until next week,” adds Bumann. “When I visited my ancestral village of Cromarty, Scotland, I first wrote to the town museum to say I was visiting. The curator met me and gave me information from his archives. And he walked with me up the hill to the cemetery—to my family’s gravesites. Without his guidance, I might have wandered for hours looking for them.” That’s another advantage to calling ahead: helpful locals. “A few years ago, I made a trip to Saline County, Illinois, and I’d written ahead,” says Thomas. “When I walked in, the librarian took one look at me and said ‘Oh, you’re the lady from California? You just missed your cousin.’ Since my grandmother always said that all her family were ‘dead and gone,’ you can imagine my surprise to learn that not only one cousin lived nearby, but a complete regiment of cousins.”

THEIR HOMES AND HOME TOWNS Bumann has visited Cromarty three times. “I can walk past my ancestors’ house and know they walked this same street; they looked at the same things that I see. No amount of time in an archive can give you that connection.” Through her genealogy research, she frequently embarks on roads less traveled. “I’m sure [my husband and I] are probably the only tourists ever to visit Kembs in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. I’ve visited almost extinct places like Sarnesfield in Herefordshire, England. I don’t hang around big cities. I want to see how the rest of the people live. What are their towns and villages like? What is their everyday life? What is their culture? What do they do for fun?” If you’re lucky (like I was in Denver), your ancestor’s home or other family

landmark still exists. “If you know an address for an old family home, a cemetery, a family business, or local point of interest, first check Google Maps or MapQuest and search for a satellite photo of the neighborhood,” Thomas suggests. “Many years ago, I left home with an address and optimism, but was dismayed to learn that my father’s childhood home in Evanston, Illinois was now a parking lot for a Marshall Field’s department store. In my defense, that was before Google Street View.”

THEIR FINAL RESTING PLACE Is your family history a mystery? Cemeteries can fill in missing puzzle pieces, says Thomas. “One day I was walking a huge cemetery near Chicago,” she recalls. “The cemetery sexton told me my great-grandparents were there, but there were no gravestones. As the day wound down, I walked far beyond where they were supposed to be. I found a small, old granite stone almost covered by grass. As I cleared away some of the grass, I found that it was actually a large granite stone that had fallen over.” She was astonished to discover that the stone belonged to her great-grandparents James and Elizabeth Brady and their first son, Hugh, who died at 10 months old. “I had known nothing of Hugh,” Thomas says. “But four years before Elizabeth died, her grandson, also named Hugh, was born. He was my father.” Only visiting in person can “provide the rewards of uncovering a forgotten gravestone for your family, or meeting a cousin you did not know existed, speaking to a village elder who knew your family, or walking a misty lane through a forest, knowing your family walked the same land 150 years before you,” says Thomas. “Nothing else can touch that.” v

SAN DIEGO NOW SoCal’s big city by the sea has come of age in recent years. What’s there to love? Quite a few things, actually. Leslie A. Westbrook reports on the region’s modern offerings

S

AN DIEGO IS NOT L.A.’S TOURISTY, UNSOPHISTICATED LITTLE SISTER ANYMORE. The county boasts 70 miles of gorgeous California coastline, from Oceanside to Imperial Beach and the Mexican border, and the city has grown to be the eighth largest in the nation. Most travelers are familiar with downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter, the San Diego Zoo, Legoland, and the now-controversial Sea World. Admittedly, I never tire of many tried and true attractions, especially the museums in Balboa Park, but it wasn’t until this trip that I experienced the magnificent park at twilight for the first time, while en route to a terrific theatrical production at The Old Globe Theatre within the park. But there’s a whole lot more to explore, including an explosion of farm-to-table eateries, 75 local breweries, and Mexican restaurants galore. Accommodations are wide ranging in style and price. I don’t have space to touch on everything, but this will get you started.

in San Diego. The Sicilian-born chef should know what he’s doing: his family has owned restaurants in Little Italy since he was a bambino. Or you could motor over to Adams Boulevard for tostadas and chile rellenos at my dad’s favorite place, Ponce’s (poncesrestaurant.com), founded in 1969, with its fun décor of vintage Mexican paintings hung floor to ceiling. Better yet, do an urban food crawl among the seemingly endless North Park possibilities along 30th Street and University Avenue. North Park has so many amazing restaurants that are not to be missed. University Avenue discoveries include Carnitas’ Snack Shop (carnitassnackshack.com); queue up with fans of the eatery, then grab a spot on the back patio. One of my favorite finds was a new and amazing hole-in-the-wall called JU/KE (eatjuke.com). The small kitchen, ingeniously set up in the back of a beer shop called Bottlecraft, grew out of the popu-

lar food truck MIHO. Seating is limited but friendly, at a window counter or at a long wooden table on busy University Avenue. The deep-fried duck confit ($4 as a side) is to die for, as is the cauliflower steak. Farm-to-table cuisine at Urban Solace (urbansolace.net) on 30th Street is also terrific; the threecourse vegetarian dinner ($30) on Thursday nights would turn any meat eater into a veggie—as long as they didn’t mind loud rock and roll music. (Jazz lovers, while you’re in the area be sure to tune in to KSDS: San Diego’s 88.3 FM; Chris Springer’s Saturday noon to 3 p.m. Latin jazz program is tops.) And you can’t go wrong with outrageous ice cream flavors like toasted coconut and maple bacon from Calexico Creamery (calexicocreamery.com), a roving truck that you can track down on Twitter (twitter.com/calexicosd).

ing down at Paradise Point (paradisepoint.com): an urban oasis set on a charming island in Mission Bay. The 44-acre property is lovely, with original yet updated architecture from the early-1960s and five restaurants ranging from a pizza cave to an upscale dinner house. There’s a gift shop, bicycles, sun, sand, and surf lessons—everything you need from an island paradise. And it’s cheaper than Hawaii, though you’ll have to mingle with ducks instead of swim with the honu (turtles). Even if you don’t check in to one of the resort’s cool bungalows, you can indulge in “Island Origins,” a spa experience that includes an informative botanical tour of the lush grounds, a relaxing massage and tea tree oil scalp treatment, and use of the sauna. v

In Centro Havana, a sample of Cuban life: “…not a lot going on inside; everything of importance is happening on the street, or just outside the house.”

CUBANEVOLUTION In the twilight of the Castro era, an island frozen in time begins to thaw. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BILL HENDRICKS

VENTURA-BASED ARTIST AND FILMMAKER BILL HENDRICKS views photography as “a way of reducing daily chaos into a few meaningful moments.” A longtime Cubaphile, his evocative images of the Caribbean island showcase dreamy, sepia-tinged impressions rather than the glaringly bright color images of old cars, cigars, and Havana dancers we typically see. Here, the professor of photography at Ventura College with 55 Cuba trips under his belt shares his passion—in words and images—for the “Pearl of the Antilles.”

You’ve made 55 trips to Cuba over the last 20 years. What’s the appeal? For me, Cuba is both a love and an addiction. I am fascinated by a world made remarkably strange and oddly familiar. This place is a lyrical riddle that lies 90 miles off shore but below the line of American television. Since Kennedy’s presidency, it's been forbidden fruit for most U.S. citizens. It's a place where one can drink happiness and bitterness from the same cup, and where communism and capitalism are celebrated and defeated, often at the same dinner table. Tell me about your first trip and what led you there. In spring of 1993, I was invited to join the faculty of the Institute of Shipboard Education to teach a semester course in photography. While in South Africa, professor Joe Scarpaci and I were discussing the future of Cuba. It was five years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Russian presence was at a minimum, and Fidel Castro had announced that his Island Nation was in the “Special Period.” Joe had designed a class that would be made up of 12 students and three professors, including myself as a guest lecturer. We arrived in Miami on December 26 and would later board a charter flight to Havana. We spent the next eight days studying Cuba’s culture: meeting writers, architects, musicians, and artists. We arrived at the end of Perestroika and the very beginning of the Cuban Art Revolution. Many of the artists that I met in Havana back in the early 1990s are still good friends and have gone on to have successful careers in Europe, the United States, and South America. How is life in 2014 still being driven by Cold War policies? When I take people from the U.S. to Cuba this question is always quick to come up: How is it that we live in the 21st century but our politics are governed by the laws of the Cold War? Fiftytwo years ago, the U.S. government imposed an embargo on Cuba in order to remove Fidel Castro and halt the Cuban Revolution. Ten years ago, a local congressman asked me if I thought it was working. I was surprised at his ABOVE, FROM TOP: Celebrating the July 26, 1953, attack on the Moncada army barracks, the birth of the rebellion that eventually ousted Fulgencio Batista; portrait of Yuri, Cuban transvestite and selfproclaimed “solider in the new revolution”; faceless portrait of Rosa and Evette, lesbians who only allowed Hendricks to shoot their clothing, for fear of reprisal. OPPOSITE: Located on the top floor of a dilapidated Havana tenement, La Guarida restaurant is considered one of Cuba’s finest.

question, since both Fidel and Raul were healthy and strong at that time. I tried to point out that we have much more in common with Cuba than differences. We enjoy cooperation when it comes to air space, immigration, drug trafficking, sea and wildlife migrations, and, of course, baseball. Many of our disagreements come from political decisions that were made 35 to 40 years ago, and are held on to by those who live in the past. A good example is the U.S. State Department's State Sponsors of Terrorism List, which currently includes Cuba, Sudan, Syria, and Iran. North Korea is not on the list, having been taken off during nuclear negotiations in 2008. For those who have traveled to Cuba, it's a mystery that this little country still holds a place on the list. In May of 2013, the State Department filed a report saying there was no indication that the Cuban government provided weapons or paramilitary training to terrorist groups. They also made it clear that they don't really believe Cuba is a state sponsor of terrorism, and that Cuba is on the terrorist list for political reasons. How do you replicate the Cuban experience here in Ventura County, or do you? I don't know of any Cuban restaurants in Ventura County, but from time to time people will come to our house for a Cuban evening. My wife, Cindy, and I have a collection of contemporary Cuban art and enjoy preparing Cuban food. In 2008, Arturo Sandoval, the well-known Cuban jazz trumpeter, was performing for the Ventura Music Festival. Executive Director Cheryl Heitmann called saying that Mr. Sandoval would enjoy a tradi-

tional Cuban dinner while in town, and asked if we could prepare a meal for him and his band. It was a great honor. Cuba is known as a hotbed of musical talent. When you’re there, what’s it really like? The island is similar in length to California, with a population of about 11 million people, most of whom seem to have a wide range of musical talent and rhythm. My favorite musical experiences come from the spontaneity of the street. It's not uncommon to walk down Calle Obispo and hear the sounds of a master jazz trumpeter with his quartet coming from a neighborhood bar. Hang a sharp right and walk back to Centro Havana and, as you stare at the rooftop laundry, you will be drawn into the Afro-Cuban rhythms that are both vibrant and familiar. But it's impossible to speak about Cuban music without talking about ballet. The Cuban National Ballet embodies a strong artistic vision that encourages the development of new choreography. Experiencing the ballet in Cuba can be described as refined and loud. A few years back, my family and I were seated center stage in the Grand Theater when an ear-piercing roar came over the crowed, a sound I would usually associate with a rock concert. We looked up into the balcony to see Gabriel Garcia Márquez seated as cool as can be. The audience never relaxed the whole evening, regularly erupting at every arabesque and grand jeté. Let’s talk photography. When you’re shooting in Cuba, what subjects appeal to you most—food,

music, landscape? All of that is appealing. But I find myself most closely connected to faces and personalities. The people I have met along the way constantly challenge my belief systems, and remind me that we all occupy a small inconspicuous space for nourishment and mortality. Even though Cuba is rich with color, I see it as though it has been stopped in time. Therefore, many of my photographs are shot on film and printed the color of tobacco. What do your guided trips entail? Right now I am taking people once a year. My main job is Professor of Photography at Ventura College, so I plan my trips around spring break. The trips are not really tours, but cultural exchange programs. I work with my partner, Fabiola, and together we feel that opening a few doors and connecting people face to face is the most exciting thing we can do. On our trips, we spend time with artists, architects, and diplomats. We experience Cuban jazz and ballet, etc. We want to immerse people in the culture from as many different directions as possible. Each trip is unlike the last; it depends largely on the social, political, and economic climate of the time. Also, I like to interview those who are traveling with me to find out if they have any special interests that would make their Cuba experience more personal and interesting. Through some of my contacts in Havana, we were able to arrange for a meeting for a couple of writers on my last trip who wanted to meet the celebrated Cuban poet Nancy Morejón. Those who are interested in this kind of cultural travel can contact me at wmh@west.net. v

OPPOSITE TOP: Cuban girl “hanging out on El Malecon, listening to some music.” OPPOSITE BOTTOM (L. TO R.): A jazz trumpeter blows a sunset soundtrack for passersby. Music and baseball are two of the island’s national passions, Hendricks explained: “I think Cubans believe in baseball more than God. This is where the street becomes the church.”

LIVING IN THE TIMELESS: DRAWINGS BY BEATRICE WOOD

May 11 to August 31 | Santa Barbara Museum of Art Although known widely for her lusterware pottery, Beatrice Wood (1893–1998) first garnered attention through the medium of drawing as a member of the provocative New York Dada community in the 1910s. This exhibition will examine the lesser-known, yet foundational, role of drawing in the artist’s work, which she continued to develop over the next eight decades. The intimacy of drawing allowed Wood to explore personal and often socially taboo subject matter in abstract and figurative styles. Living in the Timeless will also celebrate the recent gift of 166 works on paper by Wood from the collection of Francis M. Naumann and Marie T. Keller to the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA), which also represents one of the largest collections of works on paper of this pivotal artist, who settled in Ojai in 1948. 1130 State Street, Santa Barbara.
