EDITOR’S NOTE

NOBODY SAID IT WAS EASY

T

he drive from Ventura to Paso Robles starts after breakfast and ends before lunch. Between coffee and sandwich, there’s a brief parody of a road trip: cruise control barely has a chance to take over and by the time you feel any sense of distance, you’ve arrived. And it’s not all that different once you do. The oaks are a little thicker and garlanded with Spanish moss. Occasional dense fog serves as a reminder that you’ve left the cocoon of the Southern California Bight. But in essence, it feels very much like home. Yet it was on this same drive, in mid-April, that I last felt like a traveler, the last time I wore a backpack and wandered unfamiliar streets poking my head into any open door that grabbed my attention. The first time in a long while I’ve felt a tinge of that unshackled freedom anyone consumed by wanderlust craves. I’d broken down 10 miles north of San Luis Obispo. After the initial tizzy—the exasperated calls to my wife and AAA, the pointless inspection under the hood—I found myself carless and aimless in a town I’d driven through myriad times but really didn’t know. Turns out I like SLO. Not just for the hip little restaurant where I ate alone at the counter, or the craft brewery where I chatted with college kids over a tulip glass of fresh saison. What twisted a disaster into a daytrip was the kindness of the people I encountered: the tow-truck driver who went well beyond the call of duty; the mechanic who not only found a simple solution to my truck’s issue, but returned it to me sparkling clean inside and out. Strange as it may sound, I truly enjoyed my roadside emergency. And it got me thinking about this issue’s theme. Our neighbor to the north isn’t a particularly exotic destination, of course. Not for people in Ventura County, anyway. But I’ve had similar experiences in dusty pueblos and tropical villages around the world: breakdowns that led to barbecues, new relationships that sprouted

from a can of worms. We tend to discuss travel in terms of the exotic—of striking differences and cultural oddities. Them and us. But at the end of the road, wherever that road may lead, human similarities tend to outweigh cultural distinctions. People are people wherever you go. And in spite of religious, philosophical, financial, political, and myriad other differences, most people will help others in their time of need. While this magazine typically focuses on the people of Ventura County, our cover story (page 40) this month showcases some of the people of the world—as seen through the lenses of five local photographers. I’ve had the good fortune to travel extensively: five of the seven continents so far, enough to know that travel is no vacation. It’s easy to romanticize, but travel can be an utter hardship, a test of fortitude. It can be an awakening, yes. But it can also be the blazing frustration of jet lag and miscommunication, of missed flights, delays, and unplanned adventures—aka screw-ups. Just ask Eric Rigney (page 15). As we send this travel-themed issue to press, he and his family are finally sailing out of Mexico, having left Ventura on an around-the-world trip in early February. Three months of “problems that keep coming up,” and the kids are missing Ventura and the head’s starting to stink and hurricane season is just around the corner. And they hope to find “fun” there, too: “just around the corner.” But around every corner, it seems— there’s another corner. One day they’ll look back and laugh. Their friends will listen wide-eyed to their grand tales, and the kids, now 11 and 13, will be men with depth of experience. And perhaps that’s the end goal. Travel isn’t necessarily fun, but it does leave an imprint on your soul. Matt Katz mattk@ventanamonthly.com

ABOUT TOWN

Hand harvesting in the early morning hours while dewdrops keep the tea leaves moist.

THE GOSPEL OF GOOD TEA As the new ambassador for Ceylon tea, Ventura’s David De Candia works with Sri Lankan growers and government officials to spread the word of the world’s finest cuppa. BY MARK STORER GOOD FORTUNE SEEMS TO FOLLOW DAVID DE CANDIA. From answering an ad for a manufacturing manager at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf headquarters in Camarillo 17 years ago to being recently appointed ambassador for Ceylon Premium Tea of Sri Lanka, he’s gone down more than his share of rabbit holes filled with wonder and lifeaffirming promise. Now living a life steeped in the history, story, agriculture, and process of tea, De Candia uses the storied and worldwide beverage to change lives, just as it changed his. De Candia lives in Ventura and used to work for Haliburton Corporation. But when the oil industry went into a downturn, he “took the [severance] package and decided to do something else” rather than move to Texas. That “something else” appeared as a simple help-wanted ad for a

warehouse and operations manager. Once he arrived at the headquarters of Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, however, he found himself overwhelmed by the operation, particularly the leafy shipments of teas with their unique smells and flavors. “I really wanted to get into tea, and there was no one here to help me do that,” De Candia said. He found samples of tea that wholesalers were sending to the company and began tasting them. It’s then that he approached CBTL’s owners and told them he thought he could make some tea blends himself. “I told them I needed to get to the source, to visit the growers,” he explained. “At that time, the company was buying from wholesalers.” CBTL doesn’t do that anymore. Instead, De Candia, now 54 and a sort of self-taught tea sommelier, travels to countries such as India, Sri }}

Lanka, Thailand, Taiwan, and South Africa, building relationships with growers and working to establish a legacy of giving and growth. While he takes some eight buying trips per year, De Candia is particularly drawn to the small island country of Sri Lanka, where he works with the tea grower and production estate Walters Bay. “I found that Sri Lanka has mastered the sustainability aspect of tea,” he said. “They’ve provided agriculturally, socially, and economically. They’re far ahead of other countries.” The relationship started with a two-hour phone conversation between De Candia and a Walters Bay representative, a discussion that focused mainly on the tea growers. “It wasn’t about just buying the tea, a purchasing position; it was about creating a partnership with these people.” Tea in Sri Lanka is harvested by hand, and only the top two leaves of each plant—a bush grown and pruned to be around waist high—are picked. No pesticides or chemicals of any kind are used. “They also only pick the leaves in the early morning hours when dew is still on the leaves to capture that extra moisture,” De Candia said. On a recent trip to Sri Lanka, the country’s prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, approached De Candia and asked him to serve as the ambassador for Ceylon tea, a Sri Lankan grown tea plant known worldwide. This meant, in essence, that De Candia would go forth and spread the good word of Sri Lankan Ceylon tea. “I remember sipping a cup of tea and watching people plucking the leaves and thinking, ‘How can I let people know about this relationship and these people?’” In addition to preaching tea, De Candia wrote a children’s book called Master Davey and the Magic Tea House: Legend of the Blue Tiger, which chronicles the adventures of a young man learning not only the process of tea production, but of the social and even spiritual nature of tea. “I’ve read that book to kids in my wife’s elementary school class and kids in a children’s hospital I helped build in Sri Lanka. Kids get this stuff, and they gravitate to it.” De Candia did relief work in Sri Lanka after the tsunami of 2004 and has since taken part in building schools, community centers, and a children’s hospital, among other charitable works. Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf is also involved in the efforts, but De Candia describes himself as an independent operator, working closely with Sri Lanka’s tea growers, owners, and government to benefit workers and share the gospel of good tea. This May he will be in Long Beach, sitting on a panel with the Walters Bay tea growers and conducting a seminar for the tea industry from the point of view of the grower and the buyer. He plans to explain the process from beginning to end: “How to pick it, how to roll it, dry it, and process it. Then how to ship it, make it, and drink it.” Tea is consumed in a number of different ways—from

lightly brewed to that familiar amber color to dark, thick, rich, and even oily. That’s why it’s the most popular beverage in the world. “It’s relaxing, and it puts you in the moment,” he said, speaking of tea’s spiritual qualities. “To make a good pot of tea, you need to focus on the process and make sure you do it correctly. It requires you to pay attention. You can put a cup in the microwave and put a bag in it, but that’s not a proper cup of tea.” In addition to his recent appointment as Sri Lanka’s official ambassador of Ceylon tea, De Candia has evolved into something of an ambassador for tea in general. He travels the world judging teas in competitions and comparisons. “It’s the number one beverage in the world, next to water,” he said. “Thirty countries grow tea, and it’s been around for thousands of years.” Like the explosive growth of wine in recent years, tea has enjoyed a surge in popularity. More people than ever are interested in premium teas—and not just drinking it, but knowing where, how, and by whom it was grown. These are

conversations one never would have had in the 1970s, De Candia said, but now it’s commonplace. “Most of the time when I travel, I want to go do my job and get home,” he continued. “But in Sri Lanka, I stay on the tea estate and spend time. When you’re doing the right thing and know the people who made the tea are being treated fairly, you don’t have trouble falling asleep.” v CEYLON TEA HISTORY, SUSTAINABLE CULTIVATION METHODS, AND MORE: pureceylontea.com ADDITIONAL INFO: email ddecandia@coffeebean.com

CONVERSATION

THE OTHER SIDE OF

PARADISE Driven by wanderlust and the wind, a local family sets sail on an around-the-world adventure—and finds it. INTERVIEW BY RYAN A. SMITH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DINA PIELAET

The Rigney family aboard Kandu, sailing south from Ventura into the wild blue.

IN EARLY FEBRUARY, VENTURA’S ERIC AND LESLIE Rigney, along with their young sons, Bryce and Trent, embarked on a massively ambitious sailing voyage. They’d spent nearly five years preparing themselves and their 42-foot boat, Kandu, for an aroundthe-world journey. They’d pared down their belongings, vacated their home, and pulled the boys out of school. A couple months later, they finally crossed their first international border. What took so long?

Captain Eric, a former post-production VP with Sony Pictures Studios, answered that and other questions from the cockpit of Kandu as the boat was docked in the port of La Cruz, Mexico. And while his family’s exotic itinerary may spark envy in the heart of a deskbound office jockey like me, his candid answers reveal a far less romantic side of travel: It’s not always a vacation.

What inspired you and Leslie to embark on this family journey? The “cruising” lifestyle, living on your boat and sailing from one country to another, offers a unique environment of learning, exploration, adventure, and community. Moving onto our boat, we immediately met all sorts of kindred spirits, characters who place a high value on life-experience over formal training, and ingenuity over convention. It’s rather recent in our culture that we’ve placed our children in what amounts to a factory-style, conveyor-belt educational path to success. I want to work shoulder-to-shoulder with my sons, to impart a solid work ethic, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, the habit of contemplation, and help them figure out what it is they are meant to do on this planet. I want to live the example in front of them. Where do you plan to go? From Ventura, we’re heading south through Mexico. We want to go to the Galapagos and Easter Island, but our delays have put us in a bad weather situation. We may just have to sail directly to French Polynesia; we want to put the boys in school to learn French. From there, we plan to go west to the Cook Islands, Tonga, Samoa, and Fiji. We have to make a choice in Fiji: go exotic and head northerly to Micronesia and the Philippines, or south to New Zealand. In either case, we’ll wind up in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. Then west to Sri Lanka, turn south through the various island groups in the Indian Ocean toward Madagascar and South Africa. Touch Namibia on our way across the Atlantic to Brazil. Then we sail north to the eastern Caribbean, across the Atlantic again via the Azores, and into the Mediterranean. We plan to spend almost a year-and-a-half in the Med, wintering in Turkey, politics permitting, before sailing to western Africa and across the Atlantic for the third time, above South America in the Southern Caribbean. We’d transit the Panama Canal and either make our way north to California if we’re done with the lifestyle and/ or our money runs out, or sail west across the Pacific to island groups we missed and to the Far East, China, South Korea, and Japan. From the Far East, we could go to Alaska and down the Northwest Passage through Canada and down the U.S. west coast. Or we could fall in love with some place along our route and make it our new home. Or we could run out of money and have to sail to Australia to sell our boat. The trip is open-ended. What do you plan to see and do? Everything we can. But we especially hope to live as closely as we can with the communities we visit. “Going native,” as it were. We also hope to leave a positive “wake” behind: volunteering, collecting environmental data, and finding opportunities to share our experience with kids back home.

How did you ready your sailboat, Kandu, for this trip? It feels like we’ve replaced nearly everything. A lot of money, time, and trouble have been spent getting her ready, more than her purchase price. We spent fourand-a-half years doing that. I addressed any issue I thought could be best handled in Ventura. It’s often said that cruising is really just working on your boat in exotic locations. Once you leave the US, it takes much more time to solve a problem. Where things can be ordered and received in a day in the US, it could take months and double or triple the cost in other countries. I also wanted the boat to be energy efficient and comfortable. Energy efficient means running the engine less to charge the batteries or cool down the refrigerator. Comfortable means that Leslie is more apt to stick it out. Heads usually stink in a boat, so I replaced all the plumbing with odor-free hoses and instituted practices to abate odors, and it’s working. Leslie likes a bright, airy, and dry interior, so I added more lighting, especially around the galley. We replaced and or added more fans, and installed screens to keep the bugs out. The most expensive comfort thing we added was our hard dodger—something we had custom built by a Ventura shipwright artisan. He made us a very attractive structure, creating a safe and comfortable place to sit when on watch. What other hurdles did you have to clear before embarking on this adventure? After 17 years of living in the same house, we’d accumulated so much stuff. If it was not going on the boat, we sold it, gave it away, or stored it. Getting visas can be a lot of work, too. If you just want to stay for a few days or a month, maybe even three, getting a visa isn’t difficult, except for the Galapagos; it cost about $1500 to get a 20-day/one-island visa. For a one-year French Polynesian visa, there was a lot of paperwork and some expense, but all in all it was probably easier than applying for a green card in the United States. Getting ready for this trip has been little to no fun. Mostly, it’s a pain. It really makes you wonder if this makes any sense, all the effort and expense. Why not just buy several really awesome family vacations instead? It’s been so long since I’ve had fun, I fear I may have forgotten how. A month after leaving Ventura, you were still in California. Did you expect it to take so long to get out of familiar waters, and did these initial delays prep you in some way for the upcoming trip? Our departure has been nothing but delayed. We’ve missed nearly all our self-imposed deadlines, our “hard” dates. Our neighbors at the Ventura West Marina and fellow members at the Ventura Yacht Club would see us and ask, “You’re still here?” They kept saying, “The boat will never be ready, just go.” The }}

only ones who understood were those who had actually done it before. They said, “Go when you’re ready.” When we left Ventura, we knew we’d still be working on the boat along the way, but we didn’t expect to stay so long in San Diego. The sail down brought two significant discoveries: dissolving gasket material blocking diesel flow compromised our fuel tanks, and the wind generator controller wasn’t charging our batteries. So we spent an extra two weeks there resolving those issues. That prevented us from seeing the grey whales before they left Baja’s Mag Bay and spending Easter in Guadalajara. And we’ve been forced to remove Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, and Peru from our list of places to make port. It’s now late in the season; hurricanes start hitting Mexico and Central America in late May these days. Plus, per our visa, we’re supposed to be in French Polynesia by June 1. On the bright side, all the other boat systems are working great. The boat is dry, bright, and airy, just as I wanted it to be for Leslie—except that it isn’t fun. How did it feel to say goodbye to the conveniences of American life? Leaving the US was a milestone, transitioning from the prep phase to the cultural and adventure portion of our great voyage. I even had a couple of days when I didn’t have anything urgent on my to-do list. It was a great feeling of relief and accomplishment, but it was brief. The boys have only seen their dad working on the boat, rarely just hanging out. I guess it’s going to take time for me to learn how to do that. And, honestly, after so many years of nose to the grindstone, relaxing is not as easy as it sounds. How does everyone pass the time during long crossings? The boys read books and play games on their tablets, do schoolwork, or write about their experiences. They have simple chores like doing dishes or laundry. When there’s no wind, we’ll pull them behind the boat on a long softtop surfboard. Leslie has her hands full preparing meals, cleaning, and directing the kids to study. She and I try to write. I maintain the boat and the logs, do the navigation, get on the radio networks to check weather, figure out what we’ll need to have ready when we arrive. Leslie and

I negotiate the sails; Bryce helps with this, too. And all of us take watches: two hours on, six hours off. During the day, everyone naps a lot, like house cats. Now that you are in Mexico, how are things going? We have had a little more fun, but with the problems that keep coming up, issues that are better addressed in Puerto Vallarta than the Galapagos or the Marquesas, I’m still very much in work mode. What’s different is that I can take a break, walk up a real cobblestone street through the town square, get a cup of fresh agua fresca or go to the local pangueros’ fish market. Plus, we’re meeting all sorts of eccentric and fascinating people in different stages of their own quests. Here in La Cruz, there is a small collection of boat-schooled children, so the boys are actually getting some much appreciated “kid” time, but they would rather be in Ventura. After so much time in prep, it’s hard to sell anyone that fun is just around the corner. Even I have difficulty believing it. At what point do you expect that mindset to shift? I think the Marquesas are ultimately where I’ll shed my work clothes like a crusty chrysalis, transitioning fully into the adventure mode of cruising, Polynesian shirts, and flip-flops. God, I hope so. What do you see in the immediate future, and further down the line? Once we leave Puerto Vallarta, the goal is to have as many wonderful experiences as possible while spending as little money as possible. I’m trying to appreciate that I don’t get to fully decide my future. We’ll follow the favorable winds and take advantage of serendipity. Any itinerary seems arrogant/ignorant considering that I haven’t been able to keep any of my previous departure dates or stick to any plans. Heck, I don’t even know when we’re going to leave Puerto Vallarta! I guess that’s the greatest lesson—realizing we’re not in control of much more in life than our attitudes. Ventura - “Sciatica has puzzled doctors and frustrated patients for years. But now modern technology may have finally cracked the back pain and sciatica code.” Those are the enthusiastic words of Ventura’s Dr. Steven Alff, D.C. Dr. Alff has been using non-surgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 - an amazing medical breakthrough to treat low back pain, disc herniations and sciatica… for over seven years now. “I was shocked at the results spinal decompression gets in a short time, and how long those results last… without the side effects of drugs or risk of surgery, commented Dr. Alff. “The best thing is we are able to offer this non-invasive therapy to so many back pain, disc herniation and sciatica sufferers right here in Ventura County”.

Signature:

Due to his tremendous success with back pain, herniated discs, sciatica and pain radiating to the legs, Dr. Alff, D.C. wants others to know that this therapy is now available to anyone suffering with these painful conditions. “I just wanted low back pain sufferers to know they have an option other than temporary fix injections, toxic medications and risky surgery. I wanted to let them know there is finally REAL hope. To find out if your leg and/or low back pain can be relieved with non-surgical spinal decompression, Dr. Alff is offering a free, no-obligation consultation as long as it is scheduled prior to May 29, 2015. Due to the expected demand for this treatment, Dr. Alff suggests calling the office at once. The phone number is 805-232-5939. Call now! m ay 2 0 1 5

TRAVEL

The largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily offers a historical feast as well as spectacular vistas and a vibrant culinary scene.

A TASTE OF THE OLD COUNTRY Writer LESLIE A. WESTBROOK savors Sicilian culture and cuisine while digging up some family roots. THERE’S A SIGN ON THE GRAND PIANO IN THE LIVING room at Gino and Connie Milano’s home and guesthouse, Villa Isabella, in Sicily, that reads: “Come as strangers, leave as friends.” I had come as an old friend of Connie’s, yet did not know her husband of 18 years, Gino. Hopefully, after two relaxing weeks as a paying guest at their country house on the sunny island, I remain a friend. “Food is more important than sex here,” Gino laughed one day over one of the many delicious Sicilian meals I shared with the couple, and sometimes their friends and family. That was a good thing: I traveled alone to the land of my mother’s grandparents, a destination I’d longed to visit for many years, so my focus was food and some sightseeing, combined with much needed rest and restoration. And Gino was right. Many memorable experiences during my two-

week visit to Villa Isabella, set in the navel of my ancestral island, were about food. The delights ran the gamut: picking and devouring cherries from the tree in their garden, the sweet juices running down my arm; savoring delicious and filling homemade lunches ranging from seafood purchased that morning at the local fish market to chicken Milanese or roast pork, all prepared by Connie with love (sometimes with flourishes from Gino, including a mouthwatering gnocchi and even bananas flambé!), to trattorias and ristorantes discovered on daytrips. There was always plenty of local vino to wash down meals, not to mention amazing gelato and great pastries to savor at island cafés. Known in Ventura County for their now-shuttered Camarillo restaurant Cucina Isabella, and the still very open Sicily by Gino, in Downtown Ventura, which they recently returned to run, the hard-

working couple had prematurely “retired” when I stayed at their idyllic home last summer. The home is nestled between Lake Pergusa—famous as a Formula One racetrack in the 1980s, as well as the home of Hades, Persephone, and Demeter during ancient times—and Gino’s hometown of Enna, which boasts 28 churches as well as a point marking the island’s exact center. Six years ago, the couple purchased the sixbedroom, three-bath, two-story house built in 1990. They began to refurbish it, with a mind to turning it into a B&B, adding a sparkling swimming pool, outdoor kitchen with wood-burning pizza oven and deep fryer, an industrial kitchen, and more. The exterior of the house and the gardens are still a work in progress, while the warm and welcoming interiors, traditional in style, are spotlessly maintained. A stay at Villa Isabella can be full of surprises. Or not. Mornings began with the warm Sicilian sun pouring into my bedroom and a cacophony of birdsong. One day, you might simply laze around, reading a book poolside or napping between meals. Another day you might find yourself tagging along, as I did, with the Milanos to the local farmers market or an obscure shoe repair shop. Or to visit one of Gino’s siblings or check out a local festival, such as the “Festa di Madonna,” which celebrates a Madonna statue lost at sea that “miraculously” resurfaced. The July celebration was definitely a highlight of my stay. After the procession, where I was almost crushed as the hefty gold-laden Madonna was carried into the crowd, I was allowed “behind the scenes” in the Cathedral thanks to Gino’s sister and brotherin-law, a security guard at the event. In the streets that evening, watching a fireworks display and chatting with an English couple, I felt as though I’d walked into a scene from Cinema Paradisio. Friends and family drop by unexpectedly. My first night, one of Gino’s sisters arrived with their 86-year-old mother. Not speaking a word of English to my extremely limited Italian, Gaetana merely cupped my chin in her hand and, smiling, exclaimed, “Bella! Bella!” Which made me feel not just beautiful, but also welcome. Neighbors Lucia and Carmelo often stopped in to help in the garden—one night armed with homemade arincini (deep fried rice) balls stuffed with peas and beef, and Pasta Fritta alla Siciliana (fried ravioli filled with sweet ricotta) for dessert.

Given their druthers, the Milanos would prefer to stay home. But they are most obliging hosts. Our weekly trips to farmers market in Enna for fruits and vegetables were delightful. I returned to the U.S. with the sweetest dried cherry tomatoes, salty capers, and dried pecorino peppers from the market, but devoured marinated mushrooms and olives on the spot. Another day, we trekked to Cefalù for time by the sea and to research my heritage in nearby Campo Felice. Gino helped me track down a distant relative as well as weave through the historical records in the town hall to find my great-great-grandparents’ matrimonial records. Connie also guided me through Enna, providing a nonstop walking-talking tour of the baroque cathedral, ruins, and the Belvedere with its vast views, speaking all the while with a thick, Glasgow accent (she’s a native of Scotland, but a U.S. citizen and longtime Santa Barbara/Ventura resident) punctuated with a healthy serving of her favorite four-letter words—when deemed appropriate. Gino’s sister, Lina (who speaks English), and brother-in-law, Tonino (the festa security guard), were available for daytrips and airport runs, and showed me Palermo, Taormina, and Catania. While everyone is welcome to book a stay at Villa Isabella, it is sort of a catch-ascatch-can deal: email the Milanos to make sure they’ll be in residence and not hosting a wedding party for the couple who came for a night and stayed for three weeks, or some other shindig. “Sicily is not Italy,” Gino told me one day. I would have to agree. It’s a unique place, just like the Sicilians who live here. It’s an island that gets under your skin. As my grandfather, Johnny Blandino, used to say to me, “It’s in the blood.” When Lina and her husband dropped me at the airport she said, “You cry when you arrive in Sicily and you cry when you leave.” And I did. Sicily resides both in my memory, as sweet as the realistic looking fruit marzipan I brought home to my mother, and in the blood coursing through my veins. I hope to return one day, as there is so much more to explore. v

& FACES PLACES

The people of the world, as seen through the lenses of five local photographers.

RIGHT: “Jackson,” a Samburu teen, joined us for part of a tour in Kenya in 1997. He spoke a little English, and joked and laughed with my then-10-year-old nephew while giving us a demonstration of his hunting prowess. The spear in this photo is in our living room today. — NANCY ROSEN

MAY 2015

Hanoi, Vietnam. The amount of motorbikes here was amazing. This is how most people do everyday chores like dropping their kids at school or shopping for food. And there are a lot of accidents; you do not hesitate when crossing the street. When the light turned red, my friend and I ran into the intersection to take this shot. But I’d advise against that. — MICHAEL MONTANO

LEFT: In Shanghai, China, I was part of a cultural tour group that visited a local kindergarten class. These four- and five-year-old girls were already proficient enough to play a concert on their guzheng (a Chinese plucked zither), and we got an intimate performance as well as a tour of the facility with tiny desks and tiny musical instruments leaning on tiny chairs. The kids in this photograph were very serious about their music, but as soon as they got onto the playground for recess they turned into typical boys and girls, playing and laughing and sharing their lunches with us. — STEPHEN SCHAFER

ABOVE: These Balinese kids were coming out of a Hindu ceremony. I asked them for a picture and they obliged me. I took the picture and showed it to them. Then they insisted that before I left I had to beat them in arm wrestling. Of course I destroyed them, since they were only about 40 pounds each. When I left they chanted, “See you later! See you later!” I think they just liked the sound of it. Come to think of it, I like the sound of it too. — MICHAEL MONTANO. LEFT: The souq in Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city, is a giant, meandering marketplace of narrow passageways with vendors peddling everything imaginable out of tiny stalls. I usually travel with only one camera-lens combo, and over the years have chosen a 21mm wide-angle as my lens of choice. Not only does it give me an image with a distinct foreground, mid-ground, and background, but in the case of this onion vendor it allowed me to point my lens at his onions while he was totally unaware that his curious expression was part of the picture. — STEPHEN SCHAFER

TOP: In the Ghanian town of Seketia, a group of curious kids mugged for my camera, lightening the air with their laughter and creating a connection with a stranger who’d stumbled into their lives. ABOVE LEFT: There is a huge benefit in getting off the beaten path and venturing into the unknown. Somewhere in Tamil Nadu, India, frozen in time, a boy dances with everything he’s got during a Hindu festival honoring Lord Rama. ABOVE CENTER: Beyond the hiss and hustle of city life, a six-hour horse-drawn cart ride into the country, is the West African village of Manga. In these distant villages, water is only accessible by a well or a manual water pump, and villagers frequently have to walk miles to get their water. I shot this photo as the young man waited patiently for an opportunity to fill his bucket. — RUDY LOUPIAS

LEFT: Professional photographer Nguyen Quoc Son relaxes against a wall in Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. I made his acquaintance in a coffee shop located just below the small studio where he works and hangs his images. I asked him, via an interpreter, if anyone ever photographs him. He responded, “Not really.” So I invited him to step outside, where he sat on this stool, started smoking, and posed. OPPOSITE: A young flautist on the outskirts of Siem Reap, in northwestern Cambodia, covers himself from the blazing noonday sun on his way to temple. I was riding in the back of a tuk-tuk, headed for the city’s famous floating villages, when I spotted this procession, which also included young monks atop horses led by other Cambodian Buddhists. I literally leapt out of the moving vehicle and sprinted alongside the procession to capture this shot. — MAUREEN CLARK MICHAEL MONTANO michael-montano-5fjj.squarespace.com STEPHEN SCHAFER habsphoto.com NANCY ROSEN nancyshoots.com RUDY LOUPIAS rlfoto.com MAUREEN CLARK maureenclarkphotography.com

Full Service Real Estate From The Coast To The Hillside

Mid-Century Family Heirloom in Ojai

This Mid-Century classic home designed by Michael Chalfant Head, son of the noted California architect Randolph Chalfant Head, has remained in the family from the time it was built. The design mirrors influences from Michael Head’s time in Vienna, where he studied architecture. The original circle-in-square plan of the house, its surrounding walls, and the Koi pond embody Head’s efforts to apply Renaissance design principles to a modern home.

Feel the stunning impact of two glass walls, a boldly sloped diagonal beam, and lush redwood paneling as you enter the Great Room, taking you right back to 1961. Floor-to-ceiling glass on three sides allows the light and life of the gardens to flow right into the rooms. The house retains most of its original features including a name plate built into the front door reading “Michaelus hoc fecit”. A pull-string bell announces your arrival. The 1600 sq. ft. house on a 3/4 acre lot features three bedrooms and two bathrooms, as well as a detached accessory building that could be used as a studio or office. The gardens feature mountain views and walking paths. One of those unique homes that rarely come on the market - and waiting for the discriminating buyer.

CRANBERRY MIDNIGHT When I first saw this Tourmaline I called it Cranberry Midnight. The natural inclusions twinkle like stars. The Sterling Silver frame is set with three Sapphires. 18K Gold holds the 19.6 carat Tourmaline. As with all of my necklaces that have a fixed pendant, I've designed in my signature swivels which allow the chain to rotate as you wear it so the pendant never flips over.
