EDITOR’S NOTE

AWAY WE GO

W

hen Ventana gets a chance to spread her wings beyond the county’s borders, it’s always a lot of fun — and one of the reasons I eagerly await the May issue every year. I love the breathtaking photography, the way the writers dive into their new environments with gusto, and the personal stories — comical, heartwarming or downright bizarre — that pop up amidst the familiar travelogue details. You learn a lot about people from the way they travel. Leslie Westbrook, for example, has a nose for the unexplored, even when she’s on well-trodden ground. Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro (page 17) isn’t exactly an undiscovered gem, but she still managed to find an odd little outdoor music venue where you snap — not clap — in appreciation. George Medovoy isn’t a direct-route kind of traveler, preferring a meandering road trip through Prince Edward Island (page 29) via train, ferry and car rather than flying straight to the most convenient airport. T Christian Gapen, our art director, flexed his photographic muscle in Ireland (page 33), and was mesmerized by the mix of age-old and modern-day influences at play in this mystical green land. As for Jennifer and John Wheir of Beacon Coffee, well, their Central and South American sojourns (described by Kate Edwards, page 11) are as much about people as they are about product. For myself, the most memorable journeys have been the ones with the least amount of planning and the loosest agendas. Ticket, passport, some cash and a backpack — in my youth, this was the only recipe I ever needed for a grand adventure, whether that was a road trip to Mount Shasta, a couple of months train-hopping through

APRIL 2016

Europe or two weeks immersed in the Gothic architecture and crisp Pilsners of Prague. I’ve been lost and stranded, missed trains, skipped meals and showers, hunted for campsites in the dark. I didn’t always know what would come next, but somehow things always worked out . . . and my experiences were richer and more meaningful for going off-script. These days, with two children and a few extra decades of experience in my rearview mirror, I am unlikely to leave so much to chance. But I kind of miss that girl who would take off on a whim and just trust that she’d figure it out. I feel her nudging me as I publish my first issue as editor of Ventana. The territory isn’t exactly uncharted, but steering the ship is a novel experience. As a reader, I’ve loved the magazine for its quality writing and the personal glimpse it always provided into my community. I’ve loved it even more as a contributor, where I let myself fall down numerous rabbit holes exploring people and places, each its own Wonderland. Some of my favorite work has been published in Ventana’s pages. Now I’m on the other side of the copy desk, and I feel a mix of joy, excitement and — yes — a little fear at taking on this new role, which I expect to be fulfilling, enlightening and challenging all at once. And as the May issue takes shape, I’m struck by the propitiousness of my first edition being the Travel Issue. There’s no better time for a new adventure. I’m ready to go. – Nancy D. ABOUT TOWN

ETHICAL GROUNDS Obtaining responsibly sourced coffee takes Jennifer and John Wheir off the beaten track. BY KATE EDWARDS

Some 4,500 feet high in the Colombian Andes lies Finca La Orizaba, a coffee farm so remote the Wheirs traveled by horseback to access it.

A

s a rule, most business travelers don’t have the unnerving experience of sitting roadside while their passports are in the hands of a man with an AK-47 slung across his back. But then, most people don’t travel to the mountains of El Salvador (or Colombia, Guatemala and Nicaragua) on business. Jennifer and John Wheir of Beacon Coffee do — and quite regularly, too. As they see it, making these “origin trips” to the coffee farms of Latin America is vital for their business. Besides being passionate believers in the kind of fair and honest trade practices that virtually require on-the-ground knowledge, they run Beacon Coffee with a philosophy that demands personal interaction with the farmers who grow the beans they buy and roast. Unlike many other coffee purveyors, Beacon Coffee is focused upon the geography of flavor. John explains, “There is a philosophical difference between [Beacon Coffee] and a Peet’s or a Starbucks —

they want a consistent taste.” John knows whereof he speaks, thanks to 20-plus years of working with entities such as Starbucks and Allegro Coffee during its acquisition by Whole Foods. But where the big chains rely on blends of beans to get their “different day, same taste” flavors, the Wheirs focus upon the “single origin” experience. “What we are interested in is highlighting a distinction and being able to taste a place,” John explains, “[We] want to taste what coffee from the eastern slope of the mountains of [Colombia] tastes like and we want our customers to taste that too.” To do this, Jennifer says, “[We] need to be cupping [or tasting] each farm’s output individually to taste the differences between them, [in order to say] I want this coffee and this coffee, but not together.” As John points out, “You are not going to get that unless you are there.” Of course, getting “there” is not easy when “there” is a remote farm in a Third World country. Traveling to regions with political }}

and economic instability is dicey, and as John notes drily, “It ain’t the language barrier that is the problem!” To combat this, the Wheirs’ trips are facilitated by various local coffee exporters and mill owners with whom they have longstanding relationships. “If we didn’t have partners at origin like we do, there is no way we could do these trips — not safely,” John acknowledges. Working with locals who know the territory has kept the Wheirs from harm on several occasions. With the local mill owner acting as their tour guide, the visit with the man wearing the AK-47 resulted in a 15-minute delay — and not something considerably less benign. Another time, their local partner canceled a multi-hour drive up to Guatemala’s Huehuetenango region because a member of the narcotrafficking Guzman family was being chased back and forth across the nearby Mexican border by multiple militaries. As John put it, “[T]here was too much risk that word was gonna get out that there were gringos coming to buy coffee. With that is a certain expectation of North American wealth that would have made us a target.” So the farmers

came to them on that trip . . . and on the next one, when the exact same thing happened. While John is highly annoyed at the Guzman family, Jennifer just wishes they could see the farms. “We’ve never been on those farms even though we’ve been buying from them for three years. They always have to drive samples down to the mill were we are waiting so we can cup and decide which lots to buy.” And while the Wheirs say with a laugh that most of their friends assume these trips are just vacations, these are definitely business trips. They take place during the late November through February coffee harvest and, as Jennifer puts it, “We’re in retail, so that is a very busy time for us.” In reality, each 10- to 12-day trip includes five or six farm visits per day. Their local partners help out by arranging their itineraries to be as efficient as possible – not always easy where there is little transportation infrastructure. Jennifer relates, “One day, we visited all the farms by horseback as that was the most efficient way to get us there.” John tells of the time it was easiest to go by water: “In Guatemala, we took a boat across Lake Atitlán. Got to the other side and there was a line of tuk-tuks waiting to take us to the farms.” Sometimes it is faster — and safer — to travel around a mountain rather than over, and across a lake rather than around it. Despite the difficulties of traveling to remote locations, the Wheirs cherish their visits with their partner coffee farmers. As Jennifer explains, “I love getting to see the families year after year, getting to see the kids growing up [and] seeing how much of themselves they put into the process.” She says, “I feel so lucky that we are doing this the way we are doing it and that we get to buy coffee from these people and have relationships with them.” John concurs. He relates the story of a recent trip to the small village of Quilalí, Nicaragua. The trip was serving double duty as they were there to visit a coffee farmer who is also the father of Ventura seamstress Elizabeth Cornejo. Ms. Cornejo had solicited donations throughout the year from her customers and used that money to buy dry goods and other staples to hand out in her native village at Christmas. As they went door-to-door handing out the goods — receiving a live chicken and a huge zucchini in return from grateful and gracious recipients — John remembers the feeling he got that day. He says now, “There we were, two Americans standing in a village where our government had fought a proxy war. And even after all that, the people were so excited and gracious [in] allowing us to support the community that grows our coffee. It was the most gratifying 24 hours I’ve ever spent at work.” It’s hardly a sentiment that most travelers would share about their own business trips. Which illustrates nicely the philosophy and commitment that underpin Ventura’s Beacon Coffee. v Beacon Coffee is located at 5777 Olivas Park Drive in Ventura. A second retail location inside the former Carrows Restaurant at 211 W. Ojai Avenue in downtown Ojai is slated to open in early summer.www.beaconcoffee.com.

SUN, SAMBA AND SAUDADE A dreamy sojourn to Rio and beyond

H

STORY AND PHOTOS BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK

ad I heeded the recent warnings of news reports and friends, including a Brazilian native who works as a reporter in Ventura, I would have stayed away from Brazil. And that would have been a pity. Despite traveling during government protests (for the impeachment of the president), bribery scandals, the Zika virus outbreak and the worst economic recession since 1901, my 2.5-weeklong April trip was beyond perfect. It was, in fact, dreamy. I love the tropical heat, the smell of passion fruit, the flavors and vistas of this huge South American country — from pão de queijo (the ubiquitous small baked cheese rolls made from manioc root flour) to the sounds of the samba and the sites both natural and manmade. Most of all I love this country`s heart and the warm and generous people. Perhaps it is the weather in this impossibly beautiful terrain — warm, clear waters off

the north coast; the waterfall-strewn Rio Atlantic terrain; jagged mountain silhouettes along the coastlines — that makes the Brazilian people so kind and friendly and happy. The amazing architecture, fascinating history, a terrific contemporary art and culture scene and, of course, some of the world’s most beautiful music do their part, too. You may feel like looking over your shoulder due to poverty and crime, but if you wear a smile and leave the expensive jewelry at home, chances are you are going to be just fine. I slumbered in several charming pousadas, had many fine meals and drinks, and was culturally enthralled, all against the backdrop of perhaps some of the world’s most beautiful and spectacular scenery. A friend and I arrived two weeks before Easter with an action-packed itinerary that took us from Rio de Janeiro north to Salvador de Bahia, the tiny island of Boipeba, the sophisticated madness of São Paolo and the }}

historic Petropolis. But it was our days (and nights!) in Salvador and Rio that warmed our hearts and filled our souls with saudade. Saudade is a word that is hard to explain but easy to understand; it conjures the feeling of longing or nostalgia, and it continues to pull at you long after your return home.

RIO DE JANEIRO: CIDADE MARAVILHOSA We booked an airbnb in Leblon — a tony neighborhood just south of Ipanema and Copacabana filled with great cafes and easy access to the world-famous curving beach sidewalk. The airbnb? Not so great, but the price was right, and we were kept busy taking in the remarkable Museum of Tomorrow (Museu do Amanhã) and adjacent Museo de Arte Moderna. We spent a fabulous evening at the famous Vinicius nightclub, named for Vinicius de Moraes, aka “the little poet,” who wrote so many beautiful bossa nova lyrics. The music was fantastic, the caipirinhas strong.

SALVADOR DA BAHIA: LAND OF MOVEMENT If you go to Rio for the Olympics this August, you might want to beat the crowds with a side trip. Among your many options, I recommend the northwest state of Bahia. I got lucky with the pousada I found online in Salvador, located in the bustling yet beautiful historic “upper city” district of Pelourinho. While the BahiaCafé Hotel has perhaps the world`s tiniest bathroom, the staff, location, décor and fabulous breakfast buffet more than made up for that one small inconvenience. The lower city, reached by elevator, is home to the port and the main market, with two ferries for island crossings. Having a bad reputation for crime, the old district is well patrolled by police, making even the most careless tourist feel protected. A block away from our hotel was the main square, often privy to a cooling breeze

and anchored by an amazing cathedral with an eerie room of life-size religious statues. The square’s other attractions include live music outdoors that ranged from a jazz trombonist and electric guitar duo to a soulful samba singer and her three-piece band performing in front of a restaurant — Cuco Bistro — that we liked so much we returned for a second respite, indulging in an excellent moqueca, the Bahian seafood stew in coconut milk. The iced caipiroska (that’s a caipirinha made with vodka) came with a passion fruit popsicle. Rambling and shopping in “Pelo” (as the locals call it) with its cobblestone streets and stunning colonial architecture, we chatted with women in traditional costume. We visited the house museum of writer Jorge Amado and the enlightening AfroBrazilian Museum. Based on recommendations from BahiaCafé  Hotel’s Willis, we visited the amazing Escola de Dança (dance school) on Rua da Oração, just off the main square, where beautiful bodies writhed to live drumming. Willis also recommended the incredible Ballet Folklorico de Bahia, which performed in a small theater that made the amazing performances and live music all the more exhilarating, definitely a highlight of our visit to Salvador.

TCHAU, RIO! Toward the end of our trip, we returned to Rio — and the Vinicius nightclub for some more live music. We dined on seafood at a neighborhood restaurant in Copacabana. But one of our most memorable stops was at Bip-Bip, a storefront that turns into an impromptu samba and choro music venue. Grab a beer from the case in the back, give your name and beer count to the cranky owner who sits at a table on the street, and plop down at the long communal table to enjoy the music. Remember to snap your fingers in appreciation: If you clap, you might disturb the neighbors! For our last night in that marvelous city, we splurged on a room at Pestana }}

Rio Atlantico, a high rise that reminded me of a Hard Rock Hotel. It’s on the same beach as the world-famous Belmond Copacabana Palace, at about half the price. Our amazing ocean-view room with a huge balcony overlooking perhaps the most famous and beautiful bay in the world instilled the Brazilian saudade. Knowing we had to leave the next day, we lamented, “The dream is over.” At the airport, I chatted with a fellow in line behind me. I asked if he thought Rio would be ready for the Olympics, considering that ticket sales are slow and many preparations were not complete, combined with all the problems reported in the world press. “You know,” he said, “it doesn’t matter. The Brazilians really know how to throw a party!” So I say: Party on down to Brazil whenever you can. I promise that once you’ve experienced this country it will never leave your heart. v

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO • Brazilians speak Portuguese, not Spanish, so you’d be wise to learn a few words like “bom dia” (good morning), “obrigada/o” (thank you; the ending differs if you are male or female), “caipirinha” (the famous rum cocktail) or “cerveja” (beer). • Don’t throw toilet paper down the loo. All paper products go in the wastebasket. • When in Rio hotels, guests are not allowed to invite visitors into their rooms unless they are also registered guests. • Brazil is a bargain right now! The dollar is super strong currently ($1 = 3.50 reais at the time of this writing), making it ideal for an extraordinary excusion on a budget. For more information – www.VisitBrasil.com

LODGING RIO Airbnb: There are lots of inexpensive airbnbs in Rio — you just need to decide what area you want to stay in. Leblon is probably safest, followed by Ipanema and Copacabana. There are interesting places in Santa Teresa, but mixed reports on safety. www.airbnb.com Homestay.com: You can stay with a host, many of whom speak English and will help with getting around. Pestana Rio Atlantico: Part of the Portuguese hotel chain. www.pestana.com If money is no object, then Hotel Fasano (www.fasano. com.br/hotelaria/hotel/2 ) is the hippest hotel in Rio, and Belmond Copacabana Palace (www.belmond.com/ copacabana-palace-rio-de-janeiro) the most elegant and historic. TRAVEL

Sea, sand and sky — Prince Edward Island’s primary elements — create a dramatic tableau that belies the province’s tranquil soul.

PRINCE OF TIDES

“Quiet shores — beaches that roar,” is how Canadian poet Milton Acorn described his home province. With verdant forests and windswept grasslands surrounded by breathtaking coastline, Prince Edward Island is an idyllic blend of modesty and majesty.

STORY AND PHOTOS BY GEORGE MEDOVOY

Photo by Dave Brosha, courtesy of Tourism PEI.

CAN YOU NAME CANADA’S SMALLEST PROVINCE? Here’s a clue: It’s located in the country’s Atlantic region, a Maritime Province of just over 2,000 square miles tucked among its much larger counterparts. The answer: Prince Edward Island, home to about 150,000 people and better known to Canadians quite simply as PEI. Though it is dwarfed in size by the other provinces, PEI holds the distinction of having been at the center of Canada’s birth as a nation. In 1864 the leaders of PEI met with their peers from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec in Charlottetown, PEI’s charming capital, to map out the idea of Canadian nationhood. Today, Canada has grown in size to 10 provinces, stretching over 3,000 miles from coast to coast . . . and the crescent-shaped strip of land nestled into the elbow where New Brunswick and Nova Scotia meet is where it all began. No wonder it is often called the “Cradle of the Confederation.” (This despite the fact that PEI itself would not actually join until 1873, becoming Canada’s seventh province.) }}

MAY 2016

Our trip to PEI was part of a wider voyage, including a flight from California to Montreal and from there an overnight trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia, on board VIA Rail’s comfy Sleeper service. We took the Northumberland Ferry for the hour-and20-minute cruise from Pictou, Nova Scotia, to Wood Islands, PEI, our rental car along for the ride. From the ferry terminal we headed along Route 2 toward PEI National Park, passing through gently rolling hills and dramatic sea vistas until we reached the village of St. Peter’s Bay. Practically every turn on the road was worth a photo stop, for as one American expat told me, “You go to places you’ve never seen before, and you sort of wonder why you didn’t know about them.” In the picturesque village of St. Peter’s Bay we broke for lunch. The quaint roadside diner Rick’s Fish ’n’ Chips is a popular stop for travelers and locals alike — particularly after it was featured on Food Network’s “You Gotta Eat Here” in 2012. In addition to its famous fish and chips, the eatery specializes in curried seafood chowder, marinated mussels and Cajun mussels. We didn’t meet Rick on this trip, but we did catch his amusing note on a bulletin board: “Don’t forget to say hello to Rick. He’s the guy with the mustache.” Our next destination was Greenwich, where a beach of beautiful white sand, red sandstone cliffs and majestic waves make it one of the most recognizable destinations in all of Canada. Near the shoreline a wooden walkway winds its way through lovely lupines in the tall grass. Showing off their brilliant purples, pinks and whites, the lupines are a familiar sight throughout the island. Toward the end of the day, we headed to PEI’s southern shore for the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel, located in the center of the lovely capital. There’s a lot of emphasis on history in Charlottetown, given the city’s role in the Canadian Confederation, so the following morning we joined a young woman dressed in 19th-century costume for a walk to Province House, a national historic building where delegates met for confederation talks. After learning about Canada’s formative years, we took a leisurely stroll along Queen Street and detoured down Victoria Row, a pedestrian mall filled with boutiques and cafes. The nearby Confederation Centre for the Arts, a memorial to Canada’s founding fathers, takes up a full city block and offers

music, theater and dance performances as well as art exhibits — all a sign of the island’s busy “artsy” side. The nearby Sims Corner Steakhouse and Oyster Bar, housed in an old heritage building at 86 Queen Street, was the perfect place for our dinner featuring a local specialty, Prince Edward Island halibut, crusted with herbs and served with a chipotle cream. Our final day on the island took us to Cavendish and the northern coast, the home of Green Gables Heritage Place, the real 19th-century farm that inspired Lucy Maud Montgomery’s famous novel, Anne of Green Gables. I took a wrong turn on the way and ended up on a country road not knowing which way to go. Luckily, we found a farmhouse and drove up a dirt road to the front door. That’s where we were greeted by a barking dog and a fellow who met us on the front porch. “I’m lost,” I blurted out, but the man quickly reassured me: “You’re never lost” and gave us perfect directions. Green Gables is like stepping back in time, and if you’re familiar with Anne Shirley, the plucky heroine in the straw hat, you’ll love walking through the charming green-andwhite farmhouse that served as the character’s home. Readers throughout the world have been captivated by Montgomery’s wonderful story, and the farmhouse setting remains one of PEI’s most beloved attractions. On the way back to Charlottetown, we stopped at the Prince Edward Island Preserve Company next to a sleepy meadow on the River Clyde in New Glasgow. If you like preserves, this place is heavenly, with sample after sample to taste: blackcurrant rhubarb, raspberry with champagne, and wild blueberry and lemon. We followed up the tasting with a leisurely lunch of pan-fried maritime fish cakes at a table with an unobstructed view of the meadow and the river — enough for a lasting memory of Prince Edward Island’s idyllic world. v

COVER STORY

THE EMERALD ISLE

The Irish countryside is old and cold and oh, so green.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN

TOP: Rising three stories tall from the banks of Lough Gill in County Leitrim, Parke’s Castle is a plantation-era manor house built in 1610. Robert Parke completed it on the site of an earlier fifteenth-century structure, O’Rourke Castle. ABOVE: A country lane near Clifden, Couny Mayo, lined with ancient rock walls and structures. Many rural Irish roads offer an enchanting and culturally rich experience where you’ll encounter ruined castles, quiet lakes, natural wonders and some legendary characters.

CLOCKWISE, FROM ABOVE: The N59 or main route through the Connemara district in the west of Ireland is often narrow and windswept, snaking through mountains, meadows and woodlands. Traffic comes to a halt when herds of sheep make their way from one grazing area to another. Farm owner John Brown enjoys a pint at Foley’s pub in Sligo during a once-a-month visit to town for provisions. He loves to discuss politics and economics with locals, often arguing that Ireland should have stayed with the Pound Sterling instead of adopting the Euro. Grafton Street (Irish: Sráid Grafton) is one of two principal shopping streets in Dublin. Bicycles are still one of the best ways to get around in the many small villages along the Causeway Coastal Route on the Antrim Coast in the north. Kylemore Abbey (Irish: Mainistir na Coille Móire) on the grounds of Kylemore Castle, in Connemara, County Galway. The abbey was founded in 1920 for Benedictine nuns fleeing Belgium during World War I. The neo-gothic style castle, built in the late 1860s as a private home for the family of wealthy London doctor Mitchell Henry, was designed by renowned Irish architects James Franklin Fuller and Samuel Ussher Roberts. Construction first began in 1867, and took one hundred men four years to complete.

ANNIVERSARY IN GREEN

The cabochon-cut Emerald ring had been a gift with love to her Mom. The .25 carat Diamond was her original engagement ring. Now it’s many anniversaries later & both gems need a setting she can wear all the time. Our talks included her love of nature, her lifestyle, the range of clothes it could be worn with, & more. After listening carefully, I knew I needed to use elements that were antique feeling, but with clean lines, a strong influence from nature, & versatile enough to be worn anywhere. This pendant is about 3/4” long so it has presence, yet keeps the focus on her. Using burnished metal setting techniques & being sure the prongs were protected by the mounting’s structure, it was possible to protect the Emerald & make the pendant virtually snag-free. Add just a touch of twinkle near the emerald…and I found the magic! Clients have kidded us about being jewelry psychics. But It is true that our designs really do come from YOU.
