PASSPORT TO TRANSFORMATION
A
ny avid traveler will tell you that there’s more to an excursion than seeing museums and taking a few photographs. Travel is, first and foremost, a journey of discovery. Exploring new sights and sounds, of course; perhaps testing out some different cuisine. But the more profound experiences tend to be internal. The psychic landscape seems to shift when we wander beyond the mundane and familiar, and the most memorable journeys are often those that change us in ways we didn’t expect. Like any social media maven, Michael Sullivan went into her tropical vacation fully expecting to document every toe in the sand and ocean sunset for consumption by her many followers on Facebook and Instagram. When a freak accident left her sans smartphone and its incessant pleas for updates, logins and constant connection to virtual reality, she dropped out of the tech world and into the moment – her actual reality. Prevented from feeding the digital beast, she found nourishment for her soul instead. As a Peace Corps volunteer, Tree Bernstein traveled to a small community in southern Cambodia to teach English. She found herself schooled as well, in the slow pace and unpretentious living of rural Khmer country, where fishermen, weavers and rice farmers plied their trades in much the same way that they had for genera-

tions. The modern age hadn’t bypassed this part of the world so much as it had been softly folded into it. Tradition, like the Cambodian people, endures. Completing Iceland’s Ring Road, Chuck Graham found adventure every step of the way, each one completely different from the next. One moment he was soaking in a backyard hot spring, the next, paddling out to an iceberg. The sheer enormity of the landscape — its volcanoes and icebergs, glacier-shaped coastline, high plunging waterfalls — and the juxtapositions that make this land of fire and ice so spectacular carved memories as intricate as the fjords he explored. Leslie Westbrook’s wanderings kept her comparatively closer to home, but were deeply inspiring nonetheless. The contemporary art on display in California’s historical hotels (each an impressive work of art in and of itself) was a visual feast, as sublime as the haute cuisine served in the establishments’ fine restaurants. Who knew a hotel interior (or, in one particular instance, exterior) could be as engaging as a far-flung museum? Which just goes to show that the journey isn’t always about the distance traveled. Whether you roam near or far, there’s always the opportunity to find something new, unexpected or significant in its impact. Travel is as much a state of mind as mileage. – Nancy D. SEEAG’S KIDS-TO-FARMS BENEFIT BRUNCH CAMARILLO RANCH More than 160 people attended a Kids-To-Farms Benefit Brunch on Sunday, April 9, at the Camarillo Ranch. Presented by Students for Eco-Education and Agriculture (SEEAG) in partnership with Future Farmers of America (FFA), the event featured a Tuscan-themed spread prepared by Chef Oreste de Gregorio of Café Fiore and raised almost $200,000. Funds went to the FFA and to support SEEAG’s agriculture education programs, including the farm lab at Petty Ranch in Saticoy, where children learn about the connection between agriculture and the food they eat. CULTURE STRIKE A POSY: Cambodian children cavort in a field of marigold and celosia flowers. “Khmer kids are always ready to strike a pose,” Bernstein notes.

WONDER
Traveling through the Khmer countryside reveals a softer side of Cambodia. PHOTOS AND STORY BY TREE BERNSTEIN
W
hile many tourists come to Cambodia for the splendid temples of Angkor Wat, my view of the Khmer culture is from the countryside, in a rural village. It’s a view that most tourists don’t take the time, or have the opportunity, to see. I came to Cambodia nearly two years ago as a Peace Corps volunteer to teach English at a rural high school in the south. There is no electricity in the classrooms and the roof leaks when it rains. Students sit at the same wooden desks as their parents did back in the 1960s. But with a grant and community support, we were able to bring running water and four new latrines to the school. Progress moves slowly through these parts — as slowly as the cows browsing in the schoolyard. Once a week I teach an art class at Meas Family Homestay, which was the original training site for Peace Corps volunteer trainees 10 years ago. Now it’s a destination guesthouse, an
open secret shared amongst travelers who want to get to know the people of Cambodia. The Homestay is down a dirt road, past rice fields and wooden houses on stilts. Village weavers work at the Homestay. Weavers, all women, have been practicing their art in this village for generations, but their skills were nearly lost during Pol Pot’s war in the late 1970s. A few years ago, a Canadian NGO instigated renewed interest amongst the village weavers and helped them start a co-op. The owner of the Homestay, who is also the librarian at our school, and her family provide the space and inspiration for the weavers’ business to grow. One day during monsoon season, between downpours, I went biking out in the rice fields near the Homestay. I stopped to chat with local kids playing in a pond, to take a few photos. Khmer kids are always ready to strike a pose. I rode on to another field, focusing on close-ups of marigold and celosia }}

flowers. A couple of the kids had followed me on their bikes and stole their way into the field, creating the perfect flower photo-bomb opportunity. The children of Cambodia love to laugh. My village is at a crossroads with a big morning market. Khmer-style farmers markets are not at all like farmers markets in California. For one thing, the mix can be startling. A decapitated pig’s head sits out in the open, seeming to gaze at a glass case of gold jewelry, which is parked between a noodle stall and the coconut shredder. The brilliance of texture and color can be as overpowering as the confluence of smells. It’s not always pretty, particularly if you are accustomed to buying your meat refrigerated and wrapped. Here, vendors display their deconstructed cows like red curtains, while the seller relaxes in a hammock flanked by strips of flesh. Khmer style is evident at the market; patternon-pattern fashion is favored by local women. Split-toe tabi socks, either in mannequin yellowgrey or rainbow striped, can be dressed up or down. They are practically required everyday wear for Asian women and girls. From the Homestay it’s a 30-minute tuk-tuk ride to the provincial town of Takéo. At the waterfront you can get a motorboat to Angkor Borei and Phnom Da, circa 11th century, an ancient temple that pre-dates Angkor Wat. Archeologists believe the original Funan residents arrived in the fourth century; and Takéo is known as the cradle of Khmer Civilization. On the way you see fishermen wading in the river with nets, as they have done for centuries. Great flocks of ducks paddle in the water, their keepers nearby. The surrounding rice fields stretch all the

way to Vietnam. Back in the village it seems that each neighborhood has its own pagoda — and its own pond. Most of these “ponds” were created during the carpet-bombing ordered by President Richard Nixon in 1969-73, as part of his Vietnam War strategy. An estimated 2.7 million tons of bombs were dropped. But Cambodian people are resilient; those left with craters in their fields planted lotus and water lily. Khmer culture endures. Many tourists arrive in Cambodia on their way to someplace else. They come to see the ancient temples of Angkor Wat in the north on their way to Thailand. Or they stop in Phnom Penh for a couple of days
before heading south to Vietnam. Cambodia as a vacation destination can be challenging for casual vacationers. If, however, you are the kind of traveler who seeks the long way around, the back roads of Cambodia will reveal the Kingdom of Wonder in an entirely different light. COVER STORY
THE RING ROAD Frozen glaciers meet volcanoes and fjords along Iceland’s Route 1.
STORY AND PHOTOS BY CHUCK GRAHAM
M
eandering on a lonely dirt road towards the daunting Látrabjarg cliffs in Iceland’s Westfjords, my wife, Lori, and I saw thermal plumes wafting out of the side of a cliff. They were on someone’s farm in a sweeping valley surrounded by Mordor-like crags. It was 6:30 a.m., but with sunup at 3:30 a.m., it felt like late morning. We saw the typical blue sign with squiggly lines signifying a hot spring. The landowners had utilized the thermal by building an indoor pool nearby with an adjoining hot tub. There was a combination lock on the pool door. It was early and icy cold. Relaxing in a hot tub to start another day sounded good to us. All I had to do was knock on their door, even though the sun hadn’t risen above the ridgeline. A disheveled woman of the house, still in her jammies, opened the front door, a pile of kids’ muddy shoes and work boots cluttering the dank entryway. “If it’s possible I’d like to use your hot tub,” I asked a little embarrassed. “How much would it be?” “Six hundred krona,” she said while rubbing her sleepy eyes. }}

That equated to just over $5, but we had been low on Icelandic currency throughout our two-week drive around Iceland. We came up dry. I think our host felt a little sorry for us, however: She gave us the combo anyway and we washed away two weeks’ worth of car camping way out on the epic Westfjords. THE RING ROAD Otherwise known as Route 1, the Ring Road is the main drag connecting distant travelers to most of Iceland’s main attractions, specifically the many natural wonders smothering the volcanic isle. It hugs a good chunk of the coast, with dirt tracks braiding into numerous deep fjords that were too many to count, yet difficult to drive away from. At 828 miles long, the word was that the road could be completed in seven days — but that didn’t seem realistic considering what Iceland has to offer. In addition to guaranteed solitude there are countless heaving waterfalls, steaming thermals, calving blue glaciers and prolific seabirds reveling atop towering cliffs. Count on two weeks at least to round Iceland. HEIMAEY ISLAND My wife is a prolific knitter, making friends all over the world via Instagram. Wherever we travel, like-minded folks want to visit with her. It has led to some extraordinary people and fantastic experiences in far-flung corners of the globe, memories made for a lifetime. After spending the afternoon and a good part of the evening with a knitting friend and her family on Heimaey Island, part of the Vestmannaeyjar Islands, 7 miles off the coast of southern Iceland, I noticed the night was still very young. We thoroughly enjoyed the thinly sliced smoked lamb and stacks of Icelandic pancakes, but now I needed to hike off the scrumptious meal before my sleeping bag beckoned. It was 9 p.m. when I dropped my wife off at the campground situated inside a colossal extinct caldera. Tiny Heimaey had shut down for the night, but Iceland’s summers never see total darkness. Sunset was 12:30 a.m. and sunrise was at 3:30 a.m. There wasn’t a moment to lose. That night I scrambled up the cliffs on the north side between the harbor
and the frigid North Atlantic Ocean. It was like no other hike I’d ever been on, a series of secured ladders, chains and ropes to the apex of the island. The ladders were attached to sheer cliff faces. The chains and ropes swung out to exposed rock with epic views of Heimaey and the 17 other isles, all inaccessible, that make up the Vestmannaeyjar Archipelago. There was only one other hiker on the windswept route and we lost each other on the narrow spine of the peninsula, where sheep lazily grazed. I had to duck out of the way of hovering kittiwakes and Atlantic puffins buzzing by like bumblebees, hardy seabirds filling their beaks with slippery baitfish. Soaking in the brisk sunset, I hunkered down in grass-covered boulders, southern Iceland and Heimaey already asleep amidst black, jagged lava and sweeping glacier-fed valleys. I was soon to follow. HEINABERG LAGOON After catching the ferry from Heimaey Island back to mainland Iceland, we drove around the bottom of the isle looking for a campsite. Constantly diverted by massive, high-volume waterfalls, we finally found a distant farm where three glaciers eventually converged, feeding the farm’s green pastures and gregarious Icelandic horses. Blessed with thick, impressive manes, they had no reservations about approaching us wherever we found them. As midnight approached, the vast green meadow saw more campers trickling in from all over Europe. Icy winds blowing off the glaciers kept us bundled through the short night, but just like that the sun was up and we hit the serpentine Ring Road again. Vatnajökull is Europe’s largest ice cap and the third-largest in the world after the North and South Poles. Averaging over 1,200 feet thick, beneath it is a wonderland of peaks and valleys, live volcanoes and subglacial lakes. It’s also the namesake for Iceland’s largest national park. We met our Austrian kayak guide Stephan at Guesthouse Skálafell in southeastern Iceland. The mountains just to the north of us were stacked with glaciers that appeared impenetrable. Glacial kayaking is the only option }}

for exploring the girth of Vatnajökull. We paddled the Heinaberg Lagoon at the bottom of the glacier, where calving ice was the end of the road for the glacier. We wrestled into much-needed dry suits, the glacial runoff a frigid 38 degrees. At the lagoon there was utter silence until gargantuan shards of ice broke free, creating rolling chocolate-brown waves that lapped repeatedly on the cobbled shore. We kayaked toward the back end of the lagoon and donned crampons and ice axes to step onto the glacier. The only signs of life were a delicate piping plover sounding the alarm. Fragile life existing in such harsh conditions is best experienced from a kayak. LÁTRABJARG CLIFFS The bird cliffs of Látrabjarg are an 8-kilometer-long jagged, eroding cliff line loaded with thousands of seabirds, and they were something to behold. The cliffs ranged from 400 to 1,200 feet tall. This westernmost point in Iceland is a magnet for 10 species of seabirds, including the largest razorbill colony in the world. During the day the cliffs were crowded with tourist buses dropping off visitors frothing to catch a glimpse of a puffin or razorbill, but by early evening they virtually vanished. With some patience as sunset approached, I found the cliffs to be ideal for bird watching and photographing. The lighthouse overlooking the turbulent Atlantic also watches over a graveyard of shipwrecks. Near midnight, seabirds swarmed the cliff edges, taking in the last rays of warmth before either huddling together on the lofty, guano-covered ledges or nestling into their dark burrows. Through binoculars I watched vast squadrons of seabirds leaving the water, frantically flying for the bird cliffs. Razorbills and puffins lined the edges. Farther down the cliff faces, northern fulmars and kittiwakes tended to their needy chicks. Even farther down, common guillemots awkwardly huddled on precarious perches. It was a virtual dorm of seabirds extending westward, few vacancies available overlooking the frigid North Atlantic Ocean.
SNAEFELLSJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK Continuing to explore the deep fjords of Iceland, we couldn’t pass up Snaefellsjökull National Park, which consumes much of the western tip of Snaefellsnes peninsula. Snaefell is a stratovolcano cloaked in a 700,000-yearold glacier. On a clear day, it can be seen from Reykjavík 74 miles to the south. When visible, it dominates the stunning landscape within the park. It’s Iceland’s only national park that extends to the seashore. I picked a nondescript trail leading out to the coast between the sleepy villages of Hellnar and Arnarstapi. The trail followed a jagged shoreline through a nature reserve where rays of sunshine fought through wispy, swirling fog. I was the only hiker out there by 10 p.m. The North Atlantic waters were pulsing with an incoming tide and a long interval swell engulfing the black lava rock along the craggy coast. The ocean appeared black and foreboding as I lava-hopped over tangled balls of kelp. Beautiful wildflowers were growing right out of deep cavities in the lava, and then Iceland’s largest land predator surprised me, emerging from a dark volcanic cavity. An ashy-colored Arctic fox played peekaboo with me from a fortress of volcanic boulders. If it hadn’t stirred I would’ve missed it. I nearly lost it when it darted through a lush green meadow — but I saw the tallest blades waver as the sly little creature tried to ditch me, so I followed it toward the coast. Fleeing the meadow, it tried concealing itself again in the black rocks. The fox flattened itself as best as it could, but I was able to approach within 8 feet. This time it froze, and studied me until I left a few frames later. On an island so rich in volatile and diverse natural wonders, the Arctic fox seemed like an oxymoron within the land of fire, ice and water. Once the Icelandic winter returns, however, that crafty little rascal’s dark fur will become snow white, adapting to the everchanging landscapes for which Iceland will always be known. v
FAR RIGHT: Skógafoss Waterfall plunges over a 200-foot former sea cliff. Iceland’s interior highlands are separated from the coastal lowlands by these eroded cliffs, left behind when the coastline receded seaward. RIGHT, FROM TOP: A frigid glacial stream rushes through Snaefellsjökull National Park. Glacial water feeds the pastures of Heimaey Island, providing ample sustenance for Icelandic horses. Up close and personal with a razorbill on the bird cliffs of Látrabjarg.

UNPLUGGED ON THE BIG ISLAND The unexpected lightness of being disconnected. PHOTOS AND STORY BY MICHAEL SULLIVAN DAY 1: VACATION OFFICIALLY BEGINS Pictures: 17. Videos: 3. Facebook posts: 2. Messages/texts: 23. Checking for likes, comments: 13. From Ventura to LAX and to the Big Island, where the air is humid and around 80 degrees, but the atmosphere is relaxed. We pick up our rental car, head to the oceanfront Royal Kona Resort and walk to a nearby restaurant for grilled fish and onion rings. Wandering back after dinner, my son wants to check out the nearby tide pools; we find a sea turtle munching on kelp clinging to the rocks, with no other people in close proximity. My son names the sea turtle Steve.
TOP: Sunset at the oceanfront Royal Kona Resort. ABOVE: A sea turtle peeks its head above water in the tide pools next to the resort.
DAY 2: DECOMPRESSION INITIATED Pictures: 30. Videos: 3. Instagram posts: 2. Messages/texts: 29. Checking for likes, comments: 18. From the resort, we visited two national parks, Kaloko-Honokōhau, a barren old lava flow, and Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park, with spindly palm trees and ruins of huts, totems and a burial ground on a white sand beach. Onshore is a protected sea turtle spot. Next to Pu’uhonua O Honaunau is a local public park, packed with }}

tailgating barbecues and snorkelers; clearly Sunday is family day. Driving around, I was interested to see that most mom-and-pop stores and restaurants are closed on Sundays as chickens literally cross the roads. Neighbors post private-property signs with no actual fences. The Big Island’s countryside speaks of a quiet life. Rustic weather-worn ranch-style houses, old rickety churches, houses buried beneath dense vegetation the likes of which Californians pay big bucks to plant and maintain. The humidity is of sauna quality: a steamy, dense mist of warm moisture that won’t dissipate. For dinner, I ate nabeyaki udon. Delish. “I really need to unplug from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter,” I think to myself. “Everyone can just wait to see my pictures of sea turtles, foliage and lava rock. . . . Well, maybe just one sea turtle picture.” DAY 3: SETTLING IN Pictures: 33. Videos: 4. Instagram: 3 posts. Facebook: 2 posts plus updated profile image. Messages/texts: 10. Checking for likes, comments: 14. Off to swim with the dolphins with tour outfit OneLoveOneSpirit — a practice drastically different from the Sea World-like swimming pools with captive cetaceans that many people envision. This experience is more akin to a snorkeling or whale watching trip. A boat delivers attendees to a spot frequented by dolphins freely swimming along the coastline looking for food. Swimmers share the environment with these playful creatures, nothing more. As our small fishing boat heads to the shoreline and small bays where primarily spinner dolphins search for food in the morning, we spot a Cuvier’s beaked whale coming to the surface for air. We slow down when a pod is in sight. Excitedly, I slip my phone into a Ziplock pouch, don my flippers and jump in the warm water. First one, then two, then dozens of dolphins are swimming below and around me. I catch several of them turning on their sides to gaze up at me, checking me out as I do them. One floats just feet from me, slowly circling around. My heart is overwhelmed with joy. As a bonus, we also see sting rays coasting along the bottom. It’s surreal, it’s breathtaking, it’s unforgettable. Heading back, elated by this swimming experience, I run on the boat photographing dolphins as they race along the bow.

But I misjudge my ability to balance along a slim part of deck that links bow to stern. With one unforeseen wake, I fall off the boat with my phone out of its sealed bag. On the ride home, my phone starts to glitch, not responding to touch and turning off. DAY 4-6: PHONE DEAD Photos: 0. Videos: 0. Facebook, Instagram, messages, texts: 1 — courtesy of my son’s phone. Checking for likes, comments: 0. I officially become unplugged. Many other adventures were to follow, although the remainder of my trip is cataloged mainly by memory — I was able to borrow the family’s cameras from time to time. The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, a former trash dump, was plush with striking orchids, ferns and countless other flora. We played fetch (really) with an octopus at Kanaloa Octopus Farm. At Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm, I cradled a small seahorse, which latched onto my fingers with its prehensile tail. Disconnected from my social media network, I forged attachments instead with the natural world around me. And with my family. The most precious moments on the island were our meals, talking with my family about what we had seen and experienced. One sunset happy hour at the resort was especially memorable, while brunches along the rocky coastline were also quite peaceful and comforting (although I wouldn’t venture to eat fermented soybeans again). The drive from ‘Akaka Falls State Park back to Kona also stands out. Watching the barren moonscapelike countryside pass by, I felt strangely emotional as a torrential downpour hit. Looking back months later, the sense of being truly unplugged has stayed with me. After years of striving to be fully connected, I let go of the need to capture and share everything, and look for validation and approval from both close friends and distant acquaintances about my goings-on via my virtual reality. I experienced a strong sense of relief, understanding that no one really needs to be in that sort of constant communication. I have carried that, at least somewhat, into my personal life indefinitely. It may have been forced upon me, but the most important experience of this trip was the ability to give myself a chance to breathe and be in the moment with nature, family and the beauty of life all around me. The memory of that is as strong as ever. v
ABOVE: Pods of dolphins gather in bays around the coastline to feed, and make for some spectacular snorkeling encounters. ABOUT TOWN EARTHWORKS: The sinuous “Wood Line,” an iconic work of outdoor art by Andy Goldsworthy, snakes through the grounds of the Presidio in San Francisco. Made of eucalyptus branches reclaimed from various park projects, the 1,200 foot-long “sculpture” will eventually fade back into the earth.

Contemporary art in historic hotels and elegant restaurants satisfies visual as well as corporeal appetites.

BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK
often tell people that I was an art major who turned into a writer. One of my first college jobs was as a studio assistant to contemporary artists (some now famous) in Los Angeles. Much later, as a travel writer over the past few decades, I collected, bought and sold art and antiques discovered on my sojourns. (Mid-century furniture salesman samples discovered in Brazil, anyone?) More recently, I’ve been working as a fine-art and antiques broker, assisting clients around the globe who want to sell their treasures via international auction houses from London and Hong Kong to L.A. and New York. As a result, I have always favored cultural travel, visiting places that engage the senses and provoke both contemplation and conversation. Here are a few places that might be of interest to those of a similar mind.
AN APPETITE FOR ART The Belvedere at the Peninsula Hotel, Beverly Hills www.beverlyhills.peninsula.com/en/fine-dining/the-belvedere It may be a European tradition: Fill a hotel with fine art, either from hotel guests who are artists (oft in residence) or display important pieces from a savvy owner’s private collection. In Amsterdam, for example, the charming Pulitzer Hotel (set in 25 row houses) houses a terrific rotating art display sourced from the Pulitzer family art collection (yes, the Pulitzer Prize dynasty). At La Colombe d’Or in St. Paul de Vence, in the south of France, I marveled at not only the cuisine and setting, but the art and the stories behind the works hanging on the walls of this famous restaurant and pensione where Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Georges Braque and others would dine and leave works that still grace the walls. Ah, if these walls could talk! During the same period, while living in New York City, I remem-

MAY 2017
ber a dessert of golden raspberries that arrived like jewels served on a snowy cold day at probably the most famous “destination” art restaurant in the U.S. for more than half a century: The Four Seasons (1959-2016). The Seagram family originally commissioned murals by Mark Rothko, who rebelled, returning the advance and keeping the paintings. Today, one of the trio hangs in the National Gallery in D.C., another at the Tate in London. It lost Rothko, but Four Seasons did end up showing both permanent and rotating works by a changing roster of other famous 20thcentury artists, including Jackson Pollack, James Rosenquist, Richard Lippold, Frank Stella, Joan Miró and Robert Indiana, over the decades. These days, here in sunny Southern California, you can powerdine at The Belvedere at the tony Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills amidst blue-chip artworks from the hotel owner’s private collection. The multimillion-dollar works include a bright, at times controversial, Robert Indiana painting, which apparently some guests have objected to (the words “DIE” and “Paris” appear in the work that was created in response to the assassination of John F. Kennedy by the artist, who was in Paris at the time) and a stunning Sean Scully. There are no titles or labels on any of the pieces, so those who don’t know their Josef Albers “Homage to the Square” from Yayoi Kusama’s trademark polka dots may just have a pure art experience devoid of name-dropping or recognition. A lovely black and gold calligraphic nine-panel work, “Linescape I” and “Linescape II” (2015) was commissioned specifically for the room. The Parisian artist Fabienne Verdier first refused, stating that she “doesn’t do hotel art” — until she learned the caliber of artists her work would hang alongside. Bold poppies by Donald Sultan from 2014 hang in one of two private dining rooms. Those celebrating an anniversary might request a table within view of Alex Katz’s large figurative work “Anniversary” (2003). The cuisine, under the direction of Chef David Codney, is as sublime as the art. From delicate branzino filets with asparagus and a superb spin on a traditional Caesar salad that includes roasted Brussels sprouts and bits of crunchy kale to a hearty lobster bouillabaisse, the Belvedere is a lovely dining experience in a setting that is as cool for people-watching as it is for art appreciation. Desserts are works of art in their own right: The house specialty, the Fabergé egg, is a chocolate surprise that’s almost too pretty to deconstruct. GRAFFITI DREAMS The Mayfair Hotel, Los Angeles www.mayfairla.com David Floreses and Lady Pinks of the future may be discovered at The Mayfair Hotel, a 1926 downtown L.A. architectural site with a storied history that is undergoing a major refurbishment. The 15-story hotel was the site of the first after-party for the Academy Awards in 1929 and the setting for L.A. murder-mystery writer Raymond Chandler’s 1939 short story “I’ll be Waiting.” But something new and radical is afoot that may surprise you. The hotel, in the midst of a $40 million restoration that was partially complete during my February tour, features art by resident curator/L.A. artist Kelly Graval aka RISK, who went from being a graf-
fiti street artist and graduate of USC School of Fine Arts to having his work shown in museums. RISK is bringing outdoor art indoors and has reached out to other graffiti artists — Evidence and Jason Revok — whose work will be part of the hotel collection. “Graffiti writers have always managed to leave their mark, literally, on the urban landscape in Los Angeles,” says Graval. “The pieces I’ve selected for this project symbolize each artist’s cultural imprint on our society.” Rooms and hallways are decorated in black, white and gray color schemes. A blown-up mural of a 1926 map of L.A. features all sorts of fun details from yesteryear. Public rooms (still under construction) will include a grand lobby, restaurant, speakeasy, a rooftop pool and even a podcast studio. Ironically, I did see some graffiti in the ’hood, in an area officially called Central City West. Future collectors, take note: You never know who’s expressing themselves right before your very eyes, inside or out. I’m excited to return and see how the art plays out throughout the historic Mayfair. See you there for a martini in the speakeasy and some art talk! CREATIVE ENVIRONMENT The Inn at the Presidio, San Francisco www.innatthepresidio.com The Inn at the Presidio is my favorite hotel in San Francisco for several reasons. The moment you enter the grounds — through one of the National Park gated entrances — the lovely natural setting flush with hiking trails, museums, earth art and restaurants provides a welcome oasis in the bustling city. The Inn’s 22 spacious rooms and suites in the historic, three-story building are set in Pershing Hall, the former officers’ barracks in the repurposed military complex. They include lovely high-ceilinged bathrooms, fireplaces and comfy beds. The helpful staff and art curated by Julie Coyle add to the charming ambience. But it’s what’s outside that really sets this inn apart from its competitors. Right out the back door from the Inn is the Ecology Trail, a scenic, easy hike that leads to Inspiration Point and a 90-foot-high soaring cathedrallike tower built of recycled eucalyptus trees. This is “Spire,” an installation by internationally acclaimed sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, and I consider it the Sagrada Familia of California. Goldsworthy is known for his earthworks that span the globe, and four of them are contained within the grounds of the Presidio. In addition to “Spire,” there’s “Wood Line,” “Tree Fall” and “Earth Wall.” In addition to the outdoor art set amidst great hiking trails, there are plenty of other attractions and diversions within the Presidio including the Disney Museum, a bowling alley and even a YMCA. Ocean cliffs, lakes and miles of trails make for a peaceful and natural setting, while just outside the former military-base gates the big city beckons. I can’t wait to return to this gem of a destination and visit the Goldsworthy works I failed to discover on my first visit, as well as revisit the ones I viewed before. Those, like nature and my perceptions of art, will have changed. The disintegration reminds one not only of the beauty of Mother Earth, but the transitory nature of life. v
