GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY
T
he air is softer, corn and peaches are on market stands and green grass, purple lupin and yellow mustard are bringing some muchneeded cheer and color to our charred hillsides — summer is on its way in Ventura County! And there’s no better time than now to get out there and have some fun in the sun . . . before the mercury really starts to rise, and despite the infamous “June gloom” that can put a damper on an otherwise glorious day. When the coast is overcast, go a few miles offshore to leave the fog and, perhaps, your worries behind and enter a pristine watery wilderness. It’s a world free divers have gotten to know intimately. This unique sport, where participants go underwater — sometimes for several minutes at several feet — while holding their breath, gives entrée into the marine environment in a way scuba diving and snorkeling cannot. You’ll learn in our cover story that there’s a quietness and stillness to free diving. In that relaxed state, divers can get up close and personal with the creatures of the deep. It’s not an easy sport, or one that can be undertaken without training, but the rewards for those who take the plunge are great. There’s fun to be had on land, too. Head inland to take advantage of the vast trail networks that stretch for miles in the hillsides of Camarillo, Thousand Oaks and Ojai. The latter is where you’ll find Stacy and Ian Potter, outdoor enthusiasts who have built a business doing

what they love: exploring everything the Los Padres National Forest and the Topatopa Mountains have to offer. Trails By Potter, profiled this month, offers guided hikes, bike rides and mountain climbing, and will happily customize every trip to their customers’ interest and fitness level. Whether you want pedal-powered wine tasting or a challenging multipitch climb up an 80-foot rock face, Stacy and Ian can plan an adventure of a lifetime. And by the way – Stacy used to play pro tennis, so she can give you some pointers on the court, too. Feel like getting out of town? South of the border — just south of it, in Tecate, Baja California — lies Rancho La Puerta, a renowned health spa and eco-resort explored in our travel feature. Groundbreaking in its early days for treating the human body as a temple and advocating for a healthier, more active lifestyle, its reputation has only grown as its range of services – which include yoga, meditation, farm-to-table cooking classes, art classes, sound healing, water shiatsu and much more — have expanded. Contemplate your fitness goals on 4,000 beautiful acres at the foot of Mount Kuchumaa, where nature is a nurturing presence. By land, by sea, in town or out, en plein air adventures await. Summer’s finally here — it’s time to get outdoors and enjoy every minute of it! – Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer nancy@ventanamonthly.com

CONVERSATION
THE SCIENCE OF
CANNABIS
An interview with Dr. Margaret Peterson of the Claudia Jensen MD Center for Integrated Medicine. BY DAVID COMDEN | PORTRAIT BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN
M
edicinal cannabis has been a controversial subject, both locally and across the nation. While laws may have shifted around its use and legality, some members of the medical community have come down firmly on its side. Margaret Peterson, M.D., a Ventura family doctor for 28 years, is one of them. As the medical director of the Claudia Jensen M.D. Center for Integrated Medicine — which specializes in holistic care, wellness and alternative medicine — she has an in-depth understanding of the physiological effects of cannabis in the human body, and its value for the health of her patients. Dr. Peterson sat down with Ventana Monthly for a discussion about the benefits of CBD and THC, what the science says and the importance of both substances in overall health. The interview has been edited and condensed for space and clarity. When did you become involved with the Claudia Jensen Center? I became friends with Claudia Jensen, a pediatrician. In the early 2000s, Dr. Jensen became interested in cannabis as medicine for her adolescent patients. . . . She developed breast cancer and died in 2007, at which time she had two daughters who asked me, as her friend, whether I would kindly take over this practice. So it wasn’t my first passion at all, but I do functional [and] integrative medicine, so I looked at this as one additional way that people are helped. So I said yes and I assumed it in 2007. . . . Now [we are] the go-to place for cannabis information and recommendations in this area . . . but I still don’t advertise, and keep it fairly separate [from my family practice]. Can you tell us what CBD is and how it works in the body? There are about 88-plus cannabinoids . . . . [that can influence] the CB1 and CB2 receptors to . . . effect some kind of change. CB1 and CB2 are situated on different parts of the brain which have to do with memory and thinking. CB2 receptors are involved in immunity, the spleen, the skin, and they influence a lot of other systems. The two basic cannabinoids that we use are THC and CBD. The reason THC still is your master is because it is the most bio-identical to our own [self-produced] cannabis or endocannabinoid, which is anandamide, the molecule made in the brain that is a receptor for CB1 that makes you feel good, takes the pain away. . . . We now have some emerging thought that [the substances responsible for run}}

ner’s high] are in fact not endorphins but endocannabinoids. THC is structurally identical to anandamide. . . . CBD is a secondary cannabinoid, a subject of great excitement. It works indirectly [and] . . . communicates [in the body] with so many things, and it’s non-psychoactive so it’s become the darling of the press. THC is psychoactive in high doses (greater than 2 mg) so microdosing is the key. Is CBD effective on its own? It isn’t [just about] CBD, it’s the whole variety of things. We know about THC, how it is “talking” to things. We have cannabinol or CBN, which has the same properties; you’re going to sleep more using CBN. THCV [tetrahydrocannabivarin] — [fewer] seizures, Parkinson’s or movement disorders. That is not CBD. There are many different cannabinoids that can be used for different things. When we talk about the cannabis plant, besides the cannabinoids, what else is in there? There is polyphenol, the No. 1 thing that’s good in chocolate and very important for your body. Terpenes are aromatic oils. Things like pinene, naringin, which is a chemical from grapefruit. . . . What a lot of people like about the purple cannabis strains (Grand Daddy Purple, Purple Kush, Purple Haze) is that they contains linalool, which is the aromatic oil in lavender. . . . To take a CBD isolate from hemp and put it in a pill and take it, doesn’t make any medical sense to me. Where I am completely in agreement with the use and excitement around CBD is as a communicator. We know that [it’s effective for treating] chronic illnesses: inflammatory, neurologic, neuropathic. So I agree that we need to keep CBD. If, however, you have cancer — it’s all about THC. Tell us a little bit about the history of medicinal cannabis. Prior to 1937, extracted cannabis was widely presecribed — 7 million prescriptions by various drug companies. They didn’t even know what THC or CBD were. [Prescribed] in the form of a tincture [medicine dissolved in alcohol], for asthma, it was the best thing ever — a tincture of cannabis with white willow for pain. It was medically helpful and recognized. In 1937, the Marijuana Tax Act [was enacted] and all of a sudden, access was denied. Then Reefer Madness. . . . We have 3,000 years of using cannabis as medicine and 70 where it’s a crime, an illegal drug with no medical benefit.

What kind of research is being done right now? In Israel and Spain they are doing fantastic research and it is very much an international consortium. We have for 30-50 years had international cannabinoid research groups, that hold their conferences in Chicago and in Europe (Brussels and Germany), and it’s all chemistry, preclinical. It’s all done on molecules, not the whole plant. That’s how we move science, how we got [breast cancer treatment] herceptin from the Amazon, how we got [cancer-fighting compound] taxol from the jungle. We get the bark, a single molecule trying to effect a single change. Taking these compounds to build the blocks of solid science.
thought that inhaling is the best because it goes right into the nervous system . . . If you want something quick — say you’ve got a panic attack or you’re throwing up from chemo or you have the flu — why are you taking an oral that takes an hour and half to take effect? You’re going to inhale it. So if you sense a panic attack or migraine coming on and you find the right thing that helps you, you can take it and in 10 minutes you get the effect, and 3.5 hours later, it’s gone. If you need it again, you do it again. But it’s not lingering. Now if you have chronic pain [you need] something more longlasting — such as edibles or, my favorite, tinctures under the tongue (as they always seem to be more controlled). [More] products have the high CBD and are very much like the old-school tinctures of cannabis that have been around for years and years. Those take about 30 minutes to work and last 4-5 hours. . . . Because CBD is not psychoactive, you don’t know it’s working; you might feel a little calm. But for pain, it’s like neurontin. It’s not a pain reliever, it’s a pain modulator, to change the way your body perceives those impulses.

ON THE ROPES: Rappelling down a rock face is an adventure all its own, but the view of Ojai’s scenic backcountry adds to its appeal. 20

JUNE 2018
Walking on Ojai’s wild side with Stacy and Ian Potter. BY KAREN LINDELL | PHOTOS BY MICHAEL MONTANO
T
he first thing some people hear in Ojai is the silence. And that is what heals them. When Stacy Potter, as a 16-year-old from Beverly Hills, competed in the 1970s at Ojai tennis tournaments, she stayed as a guest in a house with large, open windows and no blinds. “I was used to hearing freeways and airplanes,” she said. “Here there was just silence, and space, and freedom. I said to myself, ‘I’m going to move here someday.’ ” Potter has now lived in Ojai for more than 20 years. She continues to find solace and strength in Ojai’s silence — and its fitness opportunities. She and her husband, Ian, run Trails By Potter, a company they founded in 1999 that offers guided hiking and biking tours and rock-climbing and tennis lessons. When the Potters met in 1993 in L.A.’s South Bay area, they shared a fitness background. Stacy Potter, as a professional tennis player from 1977 to 1987, competed in 25 Grand Slam championships, including eight Wimbledon and 11 U.S. Open tournaments, reaching a world ranking of No. 18. She also has a master’s degree in clinical psychology and works as a health and nutrition consultant. Ian Potter, a native of England, is an engineer with more than 35 years of experience hiking, biking, rock climbing and mountaineering.
On their first date they met at a sports bar for a few noncompetitive games of ping-pong and foosball, then followed it up the next day with a hike. They moved to Ojai not long after that. Stacy, who conducted occasional tennis clinics at The Oaks at Ojai, invited Ian to meet her in Ojai one weekend, and they went on a 50-mile bike ride together. “The mountains reminded me of England,” Ian said. “Everything is a little slowed down, and I felt like I could exhale. So I said, ‘Why don’t we move here?’ ” When Stacy told her family in Beverly Hills about their plans, she said, “They thought we were moving to Siberia. What was there to do in Ojai? Now they know; what is there not to do in Ojai?” The Potters married in 1996. Ian came up with the idea for Trails By Potter when he noticed that no business in the Ojai Valley was offering guided bike rides, despite the extension of the Ojai Valley Trail from Foster Park to the Ventura River Trail that ends at the beach in Ventura, creating the Ventura River Parkway Trail. Stacy, who at the time was doing personal fitness and health counseling on her own and at The Oaks, brought the idea to The Oaks’ owner, who asked her to write a business proposal. The proposal never actually got written, Stacy said, laughing, but she and Ian started leading bike rides, which led to hiking, rock climbing and tennis as well. “We decided to take everything we do well and }} throw it out to whoever wants to do what,” she said.

Tours and classes, all personally led by the Potters, can be paired with other activities such as wine and beer tasting, a visit to a ranch for olive-oil tasting or artistic time at a local pottery studio. “We want to use the city to show people a good time,” Stacy said. The tours, for individuals or groups, are personalized for each person based on fitness level and interests. Most of the Potters’ clients are Ojai Valley tourists, but they welcome local residents as well. “We communicate one-on-one, find out what people’s expectations are, and cater to their wants and needs,” Stacy said. Those “wants” might include time and the tools (i.e., wine and refreshments) to conduct a marriage proposal. Stacy said that the Potters have lost count of how many engagements have been forged on Trails By Potter tours. She’s happy to bring along cake and champagne, and step aside for 30 minutes while the proposal takes place. Sometimes clients invite the Potters for lunch or dinner afterward. “It’s all very relaxed and organic,” Stacy said. “We don’t invade people’s space. It feels like family when we’re finished.” The Potters said that they also collaborate with nonprofits to offer excursions and training, including the Foundation for the Junior Blind, Ojai Valley Land Conservancy and Adaptive Kids. Midge Rodier of Indio, a retired teacher, said that she has gone on numerous private and group excursions with the Potters, from bike riding to hiking and rock climbing, for more than five years. Rodier calls the Potters “a dynamic duo” and said that they are “extremely knowledgeable about the area. On bike rides they stop and point out birds and turtles and plants and interesting places you wouldn’t find on your own. They just make Ojai shine.” Rodier, who describes herself as an “almost-70-year-old,” said, “Fitness is extremely important” to her, and she appreciates that the Potters “customize everything to your ability, but can push

you if you want to be pushed.” The Potters didn’t want to share too many places where they take guests on hikes and bike rides because they like to keep their “hidden gems” a secret, but did say that the upper east end of Ojai has particularly scenic trails. They also recommend the Black Wall/ Sespe Gorge area, about 20 miles north of Ojai on Highway 33, for rock climbing. The hike to Nordhoff Peak, reached via the Gridley Trail, features a lookout tower and offers an “incredible” view of Ojai and the Channel Islands, they said. The Thomas Fire that began on Dec. 4 and wasn’t contained until January brought much of Ojai, including the Potters’ trail business, to a standstill. “Many of the trails were burned, and the air quality was so poor,” Stacy said. After recent spring rains, grass and foliage are growing back, and volunteers have cleared out burned debris and replaced trail signs, but “It’s a new landscape,” Ian said. At the same time, the fire revealed trails that had been covered with overgrown brush. “It’s like walking around with a new pair of glasses to see these trails you never knew were there,” Ian said. “We know it was part of the natural process of things,” Stacy said. “We’re hoping that regrowth and restoration will lead to different areas to explore. Some of the trails we relied on are gone, but there will be new ones.” Despite the changed landscape, “The magic of Ojai is still here,” Stacy said. She recalled taking a business executive on a hike along the Pratt/Foothill Trail. “She asked if we could stop, and started crying. When I asked what was wrong, she said, ‘I don’t get to hear this where I live.’ That’s what happens in Ojai. You get to hear yourself think, and breathe.” v For more information about Trails By Potter, visit www.hikingojai.com or call 646-0382.
OUTWARD BOUND: (Clockwise from top) Stacy Potter on the trail. Sophia Montano “leaping on her descent. Pointing out landmarks, birds and plants (such as the leaves and berries from a California pepper tree) is one of the highlights of a Trails By Potter outing. Stacy and Ian Potter take a breather between climbs.

TRAVEL
RANCHO LA PUERTA Just south of the border is an oasis of well-being for body, mind and spirit. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK
B
irds sing on a beautiful spring morning as I stroll to a lovely casita at Rancho La Puerta. I am returning from a pre-dawn hike that culminated with an amazing breakfast buffet and a tour of the retreat’s spectacular organic vegetable garden that provides much of the bounty for guests’ daily meals. Here, in this moment, life is good. Post-fire and -mudslides, my suitcases for once were packed for travel, not evacuation. A friend and I headed to Tecate, Mexico, home of Rancho La Puerta, a world of exercise, healthy organic food and spa treatments . . . as well as mentally stimulating and soul-stirring offerings. Suffering from the winter doldrums and a severe case of “evacuation head,” it seemed the ideal spring destination. Passports in hand, we drove five hours south to the California border and crossed into an oasis of health and wellness known as Rancho La Puerta, founded in 1940 by Edmond and Deborah Szekely. After parking our car on the U.S. side, Rancho staff whisked us and our bags across to Mexico. A 10-minute drive took us to the resort, where we were warmly greeted at the front desk and handed welcome packets that included the schedule of events for the week, profiles of the amazing guest lecturers/artists/teachers, }} spa offerings and more.
CASA BELLA: The “Hacienda” casita offers a fireplace and sitting area, making it perfect for quiet contemplation after an activity-filled day.

We took delight in mountain views, a fireplace and outdoor patios in our spacious casita nestled into the 4,000-acre resort. A walking orientation tour of the grounds and an explanation of the schedule followed. Our stay would clearly include a dizzying array of choices, five offered each hour, on the hour. Nia, Feldenkrais, crystal-bowl sound healing, cooking and Spanish classes and much more. Our delish first dinner — the resort’s high-fiber meals are mostly vegetarian with fish offered several nights; no meat is served at the ranch — was at a shared table that included a couple from Martha’s Vineyard and two sisters, one from Santa Fe, one from Santa Cruz. At every meal, you have an opportunity to sit with other folks from all points of the globe and walks of life. Many are repeat guests, such as one gentleman from Connecticut who told me it was his 53rd visit! The menu included tlalpeño soup with fresh mozzarella cheese, guacamole, green salad, vegetarian enchiladas and grains with black lentils and a roasted bell-pepper sauce. For dessert: corn cake with cajeta Kahlua. After dinner, resident artist for the week Lynda Reeves McIntyre presented an informative, sophisticated lecture on art and nature. I enjoyed two of Lynda’s engaging drawing classes during my week’s many activities. EXPERIMENTS IN MOVEMENT I planned to begin my first day bright and early with the 6 a.m. organic breakfast hike, but pooped out at the last minute. I needed to “ease” into the week and perhaps temper the overwhelming number of classes I’d ticked off on my list. Instead, I enjoyed a wonderful meditation session followed by a lively salsa dance class and then Nia, a practice that includes martial arts, dance and yoga. Soon it was time for lunch, a wonderful salad and carrot ginger soup made from the bounty of the ranch’s organic garden. I found Feldenkrais, a form of movement that claims to reorganize the connections between brain and body, interesting. Sound healing involved huge crystal bowls used to “vibrate” through our chakras. At day’s end, I felt like a human tuning fork. Meanwhile, my friend had played two hours of tennis and swum. We met up at the Bazaar del Sol cantina for a glass of wine from the nearby Valle de Guadalupe, trying to decide what to do next! CHOCOLATE INDULGENCE, SPA-STYLE On my third day, I indulged in a 90-minute xocolatl skin replenishment treatment. I felt like a chocolate tamale as I was scrubbed with a cacao body butter and then coated in a yogurt honey mask and wrapped up in a Mylar blanket to “bake” before rinsing off and

emerging with skin as soft as a baby’s bottom. There are two spa facilities for women and one for men. At the Women’s Wellness Center, guests can sunbathe and soak in the outdoor Jacuzzi au naturel. KINDRED SPIRITS One of the highlights of the ranch, in addition to the guest lecturers and teachers, are the many amazing guests. I met a delightful couple from Colorado and several mother-daughter configurations on spring break. At a lively cooking class taught by Jan Buhrman at the retreat’s charming La Cocina que Canta, I teamed up, and had a blast, with a Silicon Valley attorney and her college-aged daughter. The history of the ranch is fascinating and worth a Google. Guests have included Aldous and Laura Huxley, Barbra Streisand and Gov. Jerry Brown. Evening respites included concerts and lectures. During my stay I heard clarinetist Julian Milkis (who studied with Benny Goodman) and composer/pianist Ilya Dimov perform. It was also a treat to hear (and see in classes and lectures) Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary fame in an intimate performance with his daughter, Bethany, and her cellist partner Rufus Cappadocia. CHANGING TIMES Co-founder Deborah Szekely, at 96 years young, spoke one evening and encouraged us to remain as digitally free as possible. Without television or Internet in the rooms, the “old reality” before constant connectivity seeped in. Even so, Rancho La Puerta offers several Wi-Fi spots for checking in, and quiet booths to make phone calls. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the lovely local Tecate staff. Many have worked at Rancho La Puerta for decades, and some are the children or even grandchildren of former employees. Deborah often hears, “Mi abuela digas hola” (“My grandmother says hello”) from younger staff. Until five years ago, the retreat eschewed alcohol altogether . . . although heedless guests would often sneak libations in. After decades of cleaning up spent wine bottles, Rancho La Puerta embraced an “If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” philosophy and opened the Bazaar del Sol, a lovely meeting place to admire the landscape and mingle with other guests over a glass (or two) of local vino. I could have gone home satisfied — physically, emotionally, spiritually — with all I’d experienced just on my first day at Rancho La Puerta. I felt as though I had packed an entire year’s worth of wellness into one memorable week. Given the chance, I’d return in a California second. Rancho La Puerta is an amazing, magical place and words don’t really do it justice. I highly recommend indulging in the magic of this transporting retreat. You can thank me later. v
SELF-CONTAINED SERENITY: Gardens, hiking trails, several pools and even an organic farm reside on the rancho’s 4,000 acres, which lie in a broad valley at the foot of Mount Kuchumaa. Produce grown on the premises is used in the resort’s cuisine, such as this vegetarian oyster mushroom paella, (inset) bursting with farm-fresh color and flavor. All photos courtesy of Rancho La Puerta.
BEFORE YOU GO
From Ventura, it’s about a five-hour drive to Tecate. Once you are about 20 minutes from the U.S./Mexico border on Campo Road, phone the resort. Staff will meet you at the Payless Shoe Store and guide you to the outdoor car park ($5/day), take your luggage and negotiate the short walk across the border. Stays longer than six days require a Mexican visa ($32). A Rancho La Puerta van whisks guests on a 10-minute drive through town to the retreat. Four-, five- and seven-night stays are available; stays longer than six days require a Mexican visa. Rates $3,700 - $4,400, double occupancy. Once-amonth Saturday day visits ($330 per person) offer a taste of the ranch. Rancho La Puerta Tecate, Baja California, Mexico www.rancholapuerta.com 800.443.7565

COVER STORY
FREE SPIRIT
POINT TAKEN: Warren Barrett gingerly holds aloft two spiky red sea urchins found while free diving near Anacapa Island.
The adventure and appeal of free diving. BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER PHOTOS BY SHAWN PARKIN
I
f the thought of being one with the ocean in stillness and silence is appealing, free diving might just be for you. It shares some similarities with its fellow watersports, scuba diving and snorkeling, in that it takes its participants into the ocean depths to see all the glory of the underwater realm up close and personal. But free diving is a very different animal. It relies on greater physical conditioning, mindful breathing and particular attention to safety. But for those who take the time to learn the ins and outs of the sport, the rewards are great. “Sometimes on my descent, I’ll just shut my eyes for a second . . . and just reset my body,” says Matt Davidson, owner of Blue Tuna Spearfishing in Ventura and an avid free diver with over 10 years of experience. Free diving is, essentially, going into and under the water while holding one’s breath. Divers may or may not use fins, weights, a rope line (to travel down) or a buoyancy device (to accelerate ascent), depending on the type of free diving. Some divers see it as a competitive sport — based on length and depth of a dive — while others do it for photography or fishing purposes, and some, purely for enjoyment. But all rely heavily on proper breathing technique to achieve }} deep, full inhalations for longer breath holds underwater. JUNE 2018

Topside (above right) he holds aloft a California spiny lobster, one of the greatest culinary treasures (when in season) found in our local waters. A bright orange garibaldi (right) is observed swimming among sea urchins and coral in a picturesque kelp bed near Anacapa Island.

“It’s kind of like yoga breathing,” Davidson explains. “What that does is slow down your heart rate and bring you into yourself and the moment. You’re going to get more out of your breath-hold if you relax.” There may not be an air tank involved, but equipment for free diving — particularly in cooler water like that which surrounds the Channel Islands — is highly specialized. Blue Tuna Spearfishing is a local supplier of free-diving gear and equipment, including Davidson’s own line. “The focus is on efficiency of equipment,” he says, “minimizing drag and maximizing flexibility and comfort.” To that end, open-cell wetsuits (warmer and more flexible than a scuba suit), longer fins (for better propulsion) and streamlined masks (lower volume for improved equalization and visibility) are de rigueur for an efficient dive. Of course, a quiet dive is also highly valued in the free-diving world — and the key to the sport’s advantage and appeal. Without the bubbles and noises inherent in scuba, the free diver is nearly as silent as the fish themselves. It makes for an unpar-
alleled opportunity to encounter ocean creatures in their habitat, unperturbed by or oblivious to human presence. It can be a surreal and memorable experience. “You feel like you’re in this outer space world,” Davidson says of the silence and remoteness of free diving, which allows him to appreciate the beauty and solitude of the sea in a way other watersports can’t match. “It’s very relaxing . . . disconnecting me from my crazy rat-race life,” concurs Mike Lyons, a free diver from Ventura with two young children at home and a grueling commute to Los Angeles for work. “Get gone, shut the cell phone down and not be bothered.” Lyons is a friend of Davidson and learned how to free dive from him as well. Once an avid surfer, he says now that “It’s taken over everything. I don’t ever really surf anymore. I’d just rather go free diving.” Both Davidson and Lyons praise the beauty of the marine environment. But Lyons also loves the sense of adventure and the opportunity to spearfish. As any hunter knows, being quiet is a major benefit, and if there’s one advantage free }}

FREE-DIVING TIPS • DO NOT attempt free diving on your own. Free diving is a potentially dangerous activity and should never be undertaken without extensive training. “I don’t advise that people do it themselves,” Davidson cautions. “Go learn it from A to Z — especially the deep diving stuff.” Blue Tuna Spearfishing offers Freediving Intructors International Level 1 classes on a regular basis, and private lessons are also available. • Never free dive alone. Shallow-water blackout, getting tangled in kelp, shark bites and other accidents happen, even to experienced divers. A second set of eyes and hands can mean the difference between life and death. • Remember the surface interval, or time spent at the surface between dives. Generally, surface intervals at a minimum should be double the dive time. • Consider using a recovery vest, which can be preprogrammed for a certain depth and length of time to get the diver to the surface face-up in case of emergency. • Spearfishers must have valid fishing licenses before embarking; licenses are not provided by boat concessionaires or outfitters. • Don’t free dive on a big meal, and wait at least a few hours after eating. diving offers, it’s a relatively soundless existence underwater. “The main thing is the satisfaction of bringing home fish to the family. It’s awesome!” exclaims Lyons. “It’s a great, sustainable sport. If you enjoy eating fish . . . free diving is a great way to sustain the ocean environment.” He notes that unlike net fishing, which will capture an entire school of fish, free divers usually just get a few on a single outing. And a large fish — such as the 40-pound white seabass Lyons once caught — will feed a small family for weeks. “It’s a testament to California’s fish management — we don’t have a single endangered species here,” Davidson says. “That fish is just really clean, too. In California, we’re particularly lucky. Our reefs are so healthy.” Fish commonly caught in the waters off the Central Coast include halibut, calico bass and seabass. Blue-water hunting in deeper waters (think 30-50 feet) can yield pelagic species such as durado and yellowtail tuna. The highly prized California spiny lobster is in season from October through March. (And, yes — spearfishers must have a valid fishing license issued by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife as well as an Ocean Enhancement Stamp. Lobster hunters also require a Lobster Report Card.) But one of the most appealing things about free diving is the element of surprise. “You’re out in the wild,” Davidson says. “You don’t know what you’ll see.” Whether it’s spearfishing, underwater photography, a fitness challenge or just a new way to experience the beauty off the California coast, free diving delivers it all . . . and then some. “It’s good for my mental health,” Davidson says of his time underwater and his mindful breathing necessitated by free diving. “That’s the real goal — just to relax.” v
