EDITOR’S NOTE

CHILD’S PLAY LATE LAST WEEK I TOOK THE TRAINING wheels off my son’s bike. I ran beside him as he teetered down our street, the blonde brush of his head painting a broken line toward parked cars, a stone wall, anything solid and potentially injurious. He was unsteady but confident in the way of a five-year-old, secure in the belief that dad was there to keep him from toppling over. Only I wasn’t; I’d slipped a few paces behind. Panting, strolling now, I watched him pump the pedals furiously. The little two-wheeler gained momentum. His confidence grew. And with that curious amalgam of confidence and momentum, he was off. And so am I. After nine years of editing Ventana, this will be my last issue. A small business my wife and I started in 2013 has grown into a solid, profitable company, and I’ve decided to focus my energy there, to run with the momentum we’ve created and flow into the second quarter of 2016 on a full head of steam. Momentum. Balance. Flow. There are times when the lessons of youth apply to the grownup world as well. But that’s not to say this was an easy decision. I’ve been writing these monthly notes since that towhead boy on a two-wheeler wasn’t even a thought, since before his big sister had appeared on an ultrasound monitor as “a mass of innate characteristics…blowing around in the womb” and the economy was at full boil. Looking through back issues, I see not only a chronicle of Ventura County people and events, but of my own life through the window of more than a hundred editorial lead-ins. I’ve written them while nestled in the morningwarm rocks of Rincon and from a dusty South American

street corner. They’ve traced my steps, my moods. They’ve announced crucial life events. I’ve been fortunate to gain a fresh, new perspective on the county of my childhood—and now the county of my children’s childhood. And for that and the myriad interesting people I’ve met along the way, I am deeply thankful. But I won’t bore you with an Oscars-style list of acknowledgements. In the interest of moving forward, the one person I will mention is Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer, a frequent contributor who will have taken the editorial helm by the time you read this. Nancy was my first choice as a replacement, and her serendipitous arrival at our sister publication a few months back made for a relatively easy handoff. Look for a smooth transition in May, followed by speed and confidence as she gains momentum. My little cyclist is still developing that confidence, but now that he’s felt the pull of momentum he clamors for more. Just yesterday we brought out the two-wheeler for a little practice before the sun went down. He biked until the shadows covered our neighborhood, riding with more grit and determination than ever before, and I ran and ran beside him until I couldn’t keep up. He kept going, and I saw his head pivot to the side to see if I was there. I wasn’t. He faltered briefly, slipping off a pedal and cranking the handlebars in a flash of panic instead of continuing the flow. Then he turned and looked forward, and with a full head of steam powered into the next phase of his wondrous life. – Matt Katz mattkatzemail@gmail.com

ABOUT TOWN

The broad, succulent leaves of Graptoveria ‘Fred Ives’ and purple foliage of Echeveria ‘Perle von Nuremburg.’

EARTHLY DELIGHTS In the hills of Santa Paula, a springtime stroll through the drought-tolerant garden of Dianne and Dudley Davis.

BY MAXINE HURT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GASZTON GAL

DIANNE AND DUDLEY DAVIS—THAT’S THREE DS. Santa Paula residents and the previous owners of DoRight’s (yes, there’s a fourth) Plant Growers, both grew up in the San Fernando Valley, both had fathers who tended the land, and both have a special affinity for plants. And they were both born on July 24, exactly 20 years apart. Fate? Or perhaps nothing more than a serendipitous growing season that began when they met in a bar where Dianne worked and Dudley was a regular. “He offered me a job, and about a year later a romance blossomed,” recalls Dianne, who turns 66 this year. The couple recently sold their company to Armstrong Growers. These days, it’s their own personal garden that’s benefitting from a combined 45 years in the wholesale }} plant business.

APRIL 2016

With kind blue eyes and a jaunty ponytail, Dianne walks me through the garden, a highlight of the home they completed in 2008. It is at once appealing and commonsensical—an example of horticultural poetry and beauty from the root. Given the California water crisis, the garden was created using drought-tolerant principles. “Five years ago we took out the lawn,” says Dianne. “We were paying $400 each month on water. Now everything is on drip irrigation.” Nothing in the garden appears forced or wasteful. There are no bending boards; Dianne does not feel that they are necessary. Tropical plants, annuals, and traditional grasses—all of which require large amounts of water to thrive—do not live here. Instead one finds a varied assortment of quirky, sturdy, and geometrically blessed succulents and drought-tolerant flowering plants organized within beds of mulch, pumice stones, and river rocks. Dianne, who painted with oils and used to work as a hairdresser, organically shapes the space. “Gardening is an art form too,” she says. “I seem to have a knack for making attractive plantings.” As she walks me through the garden, she names succulents with authority and affection: Graptoveria ‘Debbie,’ mother-of-millions (Bryophyllum daigremontianum), Echeveria runyonii ‘Topsy Turvy,’ Euphorbia tirucalli ‘Sticks on Fire,’ and many more. Some appear alien-esque, just as their names suggest, adorned with tendrils, tentacles, and/or sharp meaty concentric leaves that look ready to entrap an unfortunate insect. Until about four years ago, succulents were relatively new to Dianne. “I’d learned about every type of flower and vegetable,” she says, recalling the 50 or so houseplants she used to care for when she was single. “Now here I am going nuts over succulents.” Dianne spells the succulents’ names and describes their botanical tendencies. Like humans, many have their own unique fates. Flapjacks (Kalanchoe thyrsiflora), a succulent with upright leaves that resemble pancakes, is monocarpic—it dies after flowering. Other plant species “just don’t play well together,” she explains. Perhaps those varities are fated to be the misanthropes of the plant world. In the Davis’s garden, succulents are balanced with drought-tolerant flowering plants that inject color and dimension into the landscape: salvia, a perennial that yields purple flowers; alstromeria, Dianne’s favorite for cut flowers; and Martha Washington geraniums, complex hybrids that are extremely hardy and have a variety of color combinations. Those geraniums, full and leafy with bursts of color, not only adorn the Dudley’s garden, but also Santa Paula’s downtown. “They asked me to be on

the Chamber of Commerce board,” she explains, “so I suggested putting [hanging] flower pots downtown.” After many years spent building sales territories for her and Dudley’s company, Dianne finally had time to participate in the community she refers to as “paradise.” Although it started with beautifying downtown, it’s grown into much more. “Now, we’ve founded the America in Bloom Santa Paula chapter (americainbloom.org),” she says. “It’s a national organization where cities compete with other cities of the same size to beautify their communities.” In 2014 the chapter won an award for “environmental efforts,” and in 2015 they won the “outstanding achievement” award for heritage preservation, beating out 39 other communities. America in Bloom Santa Paula also founded “Yard of the Month” and “Business of the Month” contests to showcase local homes and businesses doing their part to beautify the community. While walking toward her backyard, Dianne shows me her blackberries and cherry tomatoes. But when we reach the back of the house, I have no choice but to lift my eyes from the beauty down below to another equally arresting one above and beyond. Velvety emerald mountains rise up behind Santa Paula and its surrounds. From here, the Davis’s can view their legacy. What was once DoRight’s Plant Growers is visible in the distance among farmland, red-tiled rooftops, a cemetery, and a lone yellow school bus that slowly traverses a town street. A row of avocado trees stands near the edge of the property. It will be a rather nice landscape to take in during the retirement that Dianne is already contemplating. “I want to focus more on teaching succulent classes,” she says. “Because of the water restrictions, people weren’t allowed to water their yards. So if you drive around town you can see that. It’s not because people don’t want to upkeep their yards.” Dianne plans to hold classes on her patio with small groups of about eight people interested in learning about gardening with drought-tolerant plants. “My yard is my passion. I’d rather work in the yard than do housework any day,” she says. Dudley approaches his wife and asks us if we are out here on the patio writing a book. She motions to him: “He likes to do the housework. He does the laundry, the dishes, gets the vacuum out. All that.” The Davises really do, excuse the idioms, appear to be two peas in a pod, between which love bloomed and sprouted roots. And luckily for them, rather than die on the vine (at one point, they were two million dollars in debt) they’ve flourished, sharing a mutual passion that fills their lives. In the process, they’ve accomplished something that many would hope to achieve in their lifetime—they’ve made the world a more beautiful place. v

WHERE ART LIVES Mary Galbraith on artistic mastery and the manifestation of a dream. BY LESLEE GOODMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY DONNA GRANATA

M

ary R. Galbraith moved with her husband to Ventura in 2002 and almost immediately began volunteering with Focus on the Masters, a local nonprofit dedicated to raising public awareness of the importance of art and local artists to our community. Though she claims she’s not an artist, nor trained in the arts, her passion for artistic expression is communicated in her volunteer activities, her art-filled home, and much of her speech. “My husband and I are blown away by the wide variety of cultural experiences in this city,” she says. “We’re proud to live in a community whose leaders recognize the value of a healthy arts community.” In addition to serving as volunteer coordinator for Focus on the Masters, Galbraith manages the membership program and mid-year and annual fund drives, and assists in preparations for the “Artist Spotlight” series and special events. But for this Home and Gardenthemed issue we spoke with her about the manifestation of a dream: a unique new tour of art collectors’ homes called “Where Art Lives.” LESLEE GOODMAN: Before discussing the upcoming homes tour, can you tell us a little about Focus on the Masters? MARY GALBRAITH: Focus on the Masters is a nonprofit arts organization that documents, preserves, and presents the works and lives of accomplished contemporary artists, emphasizing the importance of the arts to a healthy society. It was

founded in 1994 by Donna Granata, who still serves as executive director, and has an outstanding archive of leading artists in Ventura County, as well as artists who have impacted our community in some way. We document eight to 12 artists a year through photographic portraits, an extensive collection of printed ephemera, oral histories, and Artist Spotlight interviews, which are presented to the public and videotaped. We also use these materials in an award-winning outreach program called “Learning to See,” which engages students not only in making art, but also in appreciating and nurturing the creative spirit. We also partner with Turning Point Foundation to offer a similar program for adults with mental illness. It’s a wonderfully rewarding program for everyone involved. LG: How do you define “Masters”? MG: A master is an artist who has earned the respect of his peers, who has mastered his art—whatever that art may be—and who has contributed to the cultural wellbeing of the community. There are nearly 200 of them in our archives. Some were, or still are, faculty at Ventura College: Gerd Koch, Hiroko Yoshimoto, the late Carlisle Cooper, and Bill Hendrix, for example. We also have a number of musicians, such as Virginia Kron, a cellist who lives in Ojai, and Miguel del Aguila, a Grammy-nominated composer and pianist. We’ve also documented poets, like Jackson Wheeler. Our artists work in many media— pottery, fabric, paper, and metal—not just paint. LG: You’ve got a new program coming up called “Where Art Lives.” Please tell us about that. }}

CONVERSATION Galbraith’s own home includes the first 3D tapestry, developed from a ‘30s-era photo of the moon; FOTM-documented artist Jeff Sanders worked with John Nava to develop the technique. The vibrant painting at right is from Gerd Koch’s “Sacred Spring” series.

MG: This is a dream I’ve had for probably five or six years. FOTM has presented tours of artists’ studios, so we know what the artists do. But I wanted to look at art from the other side of the easel and see how collectors contribute to the artistic process. I imagined bringing together a group of homeowners from many different walks of life but who had one thing in common: they just couldn’t have a house without art in it. Donna gave me the green light, and I’ve been very fortunate to encourage eleven people—including my husband and me—to be on the tour the weekend of May 21 and 22. My husband and I started collecting art many years ago in Washington, DC. We were having lunch in a very informal café on Capitol Hill, where we saw a sweet little watercolor of a sand dune in a storm. Over our pasta e fagioli we said, “We just have to have that, but gosh, can we afford $75?” We decided that, by gum, we were going to do it, and that started our own collecting habit. Neither of us had studied art, but we were drawn to that kind of creative expression. We agreed that the art we collected didn’t have to be something pretty. A lot of art is not necessarily pretty; some of it can be kind of almost scary. We just both had to feel that it spoke to us, that it fed our souls in some way. Gradually over the years we’ve collected an acrylic here, an oil there, and a print someplace else. When we moved to Ventura and I began volunteering at Focus on the Masters and actually meeting all these artists, our collecting habit became what my husband has called “the most expensive volunteer job anybody’s ever had.” A lot of people think that collecting art is just for millionaires. When we interviewed the late architect Barry Berkus, who had collected a magnificent number of artworks and then donated many of them to the City of Santa Barbara, he told us about purchasing his first piece when he was a student. He saw the painting in a window and told the gallery owner, “I really have to have this, but I don’t have any money.” The gallery owner said, “Well, how much can you spend each month?” In a year he had that painting. So, I’d like people to

understand your art collection doesn’t have to be big. You don’t have to live in a mansion. You don’t have to study art. You just have to be moved by it so that you want to surround yourself with these tremendous expressions of what different artists were thinking. LG: That’s a great story about Barry and the gallery. MG: Yes, we buy so many things on time: houses, cars, furniture, appliances. Somehow it doesn’t occur to many of us that we can buy a piece of art that will feed our souls for the rest of our lives, and we can do it on time and make the artist happy and make ourselves happy. LG: It supports the arts in the most direct way. MG: Especially in a city like Ventura, where we have so many working artists who are not necessarily well known but who create really beautiful works of art. It’s a very rich and seductive place to live if you want to collect art. It’s hard to say no sometimes. LG: What can people expect on the tour? MG: It’ll run over two days. There are actually ten houses and one office, META Law, Inc., which probably has one of the best Susan Petty collections, as well as outstanding works by other artists. Another stop is the charming home of Denise Sindelar. She and her husband have the same problem we do: Just when we think we’ve run out of wall space, we find another space where we can put a painting or a sculpture. Scott Miles’ home is also the tour. He is a photographer, and his wife, Regina Vorgang, is a weaver. They also have many interesting pieces by other people, including Dorothy Hunter, Patty Post, Len Poteshman, Michael Rohde, Hiroko Yoshimoto, and Virginia Furmanski, a printmaker whose home will be on the tour as well. She has an incredible collection—beautiful and beautifully displayed. And that’s just three of the homes! v WHERE ART LIVES May 21 – 22, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. General admission, $35 (FOTM members, $30; ages 16-24, pay your age) For tickets or more info, log on to focusonthemasters.com or call 805.653.2501.

NESTING A Zen-inspired entryway leads to myriad contemporary details, including a wall-mounted charging station (below) for an iPad that controls everything from Nest heating to Lutron lighting, not to mention the waterfall.

HOME SMART HOME Nature and automation merge in the Ventura Keys.

BY MARK STORER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEYOND GRAVITY MEDIA BEACHFRONT PROPERTY IS THE ENVY OF MANY WHO YEARN for California coastal living. But once one is at the point of truly considering a beach house, there are some drawbacks to keep in mind. Saltwater is infamously corrosive; ocean winds can turn patios into sandboxes; and, because this is California and the dream is still alive, there are often crowds of people right outside your back window. Perhaps that’s one reason why the Ventura Keys have remained a viable alternative for those who want coastal access without the beach effect. It’s certainly one of the reasons why builder Phillip Coombs opted for this waterfront (but not oceanfront) community as the location for a contemporary smart home that invites the outdoors inside. “The house was an original Keys home, built in the ’70s, and the location is fantastic,” he said, “but I wanted to put in something new and more modern that took advantage of this extraordinary place.” So Coombs, who has been building homes all over the Southern California coast since the 1970s, contacted Martha Picciotti of Ventura-based Picciotti Design. The pair worked with local craftspeople to build a house that brings the timeless surroundings of ocean and canals indoors, ushering in the natural light and sea air while utilizing modern materials like metal instead of wood. surfaces are clean and smooth, and a back wall made of glass opens to a roomy patio and a 36-foot boat dock. “Phillip has such an eye for detail, and he wanted to build everything correctly,” said Picciotti. “He knew what he wanted and he was his own client, so we planned together and looked at options.” Apropos of the home’s contemporary style, the two used computer programs to sketch the house and make changes as they went. In the details, one finds examples of simple elegance and modern conveniences that often go overlooked. The welcoming courtyard is really a room, said Picciotti, who designed it as the first room in the house—but without a roof. A horizontal waterfall operated by remote control dampens any noise from the street, and a bench on the opposite wall provides alfresco seating. A weathered porcelain boardwalk leads from the sidewalk to the front entrance of the courtyard and straight into the front door of the house. From there, rather than focus on a darkened wood and ocean-faring theme, the house opens up to let the setting speak for itself. The house boasts 2,600 square feet of interior space, but it belies that number. Two bedrooms downstairs, each with a bathroom and each with windows looking out to simple side yards of greenery and gravel, give way to a hallway that connects the front entry straight through the sliding glass wall. With the back wall and front door open, the harmony of Feng shui is markedly evident. “Lifestyles are far different now than those homes built here in the ’70s allowed for,” Coombs said. “In those days, a kitchen was sort of something you didn’t want people to see. It was almost an afterthought. But today, kitchens like this one are the best seat in the house.” The lifestyle also includes seasonal changes that bring different fish—and consequently, different birds—into the canals at different times of the year. Coombs calls this particular location “a very special place,” pointing out that it’s at a bend in the canal, which creates an ideal “viewing corridor.” An expansive kitchen leads to the great room and is open to the back sliding glass wall with views of the canal and the dappled sunlight along the water and the docks. A built-in wall of cupboard space using Silestone countertops and metal shelves maximize space. The Sharp microwave is actually a drawer in the kitchen island, allowing for easy access, and Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances are built into the walls rather than being placed against them, creating a feeling of disaggregated space—everything has a place, and everything fits well. The great room features an Echo Smart fireplace, which is fed by bio-fuels and can be placed anywhere. “There’s no chimney needed and no gas line,” Coombs explained. “It puts off a beautiful flame and is really quite environmentally friendly.” There is also a laundry room and an in-home theater with window shades that work electronically with the lights to darken the space. Along with the rest of the house, the theater is something of a miracle of modern technology. Electronic

features, including the lights, are operated by remote control. The theater is connected to cable, Dish Network, and Apple TV, allowing for maximum viewing choices. And the screen itself is 3-D. Wearing the requisite glasses, one feels truly immersed in the movie theater experience, complete with surround sound and a front-screen projector. The entire upstairs is a master suite, a sort of open canvas that allows the owner to decide what it should look and feel like. There’s a sitting room outside the bedroom, as well as a private outdoor patio. There’s also a room Coombs said could be a gym, or a nursery, or a large closet adjacent to the bedroom. The master bath features a walk-in shower with French limestone walls and a separate, oversized bathtub with room to move. A unit Coombs refers to as “Hal” (a throwback to Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey) runs all the electronics seamlessly. Everything from Internet- and stereo-wired speakers to specific lighting for different spaces can be controlled from a smart phone or watch. Even the garage, which is actually two separate one-car garages, is wired for electric cars like Teslas. But where Hal had opinions that differed from the ship’s crew, this Hal is as easy to operate as an iPad. Using Nest thermostats and Lutron lighting controls, an iPad guides all of the functions. “The Lutron system allows you to operate the lights remotely, so you can come home at night and gently light your entrance as you come in,” Coombs said. Picciotti and Coombs worked diligently to ensure that the lighting felt as natural at night as the sunlight that comes in during the day. In fact, the entire design works with the elements of nature, from the salt air to the ocean-connected canals to the twin palm trees visible from a window as you climb the stairs. The overall effect is one of harmony with the surrounding environment, a modern home where the walls rather melt away to welcome in those elements, not to mention those oh-so-enviable views. v ARCHITECTURE: Picciotti Design, 805.641.3221, picciottidesign.com INTERIOR FINISHES: The Coombs Company 505.660.5256, coombscompany.com FRAMING/CARPENTRY: Damon Webb Construction, 805.312.4172 COUNTERTOPS: Ventura Stone, 805.654.1834 PLUMBING: Tri County Plumbing, 805.647.9500 ELECTRIC: Power Bright, 805.402.7917 PAINTING: Justin Webster, 805.340.7801 FLOORING/STAGING: Reed Interiors, 805.684.7583 PLUMBING FIXTURES: Vic’s Plumbing, 805.643.4565 TILE: Buena Tile, 805.650.1252 CABINETRY: CA Designers Choice, 805.987.5820 AUDIO/VISUAL: Santa Barbara A/V, 805.687.7228 DRYWALL: Bill Davis, 805.479.1127 ELECTRICAL FIXTURES: Lights Beautiful, 805.643.0883 LUMBER: Stock Building Supply, 805.648.3181 3059 Seaview Avenue is currently on the market. PROFILE

Modern Moves in MOTown

In the rustic grove of Meiners Oaks, a millennial version of the American dream home takes root. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY BY KURT JORDAN PORTRAIT BY MICHAEL MONTANO

I

t’s almost springtime, and the sweet smell of orange blossoms and jasmine fills the air as I arrive at the Meiners Oaks home of Erin (“Syd”) and Dariel (“Dari”) Sidney. Children are happily playing in front yards, “honor system” lemons and tangerines are for sale on the corner, and all seems well in this modest neighborhood dotted with fifties-era homes and anchored by a gigantic oak tree in the middle of the street. Inside the Sidney home, modern style has transformed a once boxy house into a perfectly cool nest for music revelry and merrymaking with family and friends. There’s even a bedroom for a new “mystery” baby on the way (probably entering the world about the time you read this). This is a stunning example of what can happen when a couple saves up and purchases a starter home (their mortgage equals what they were paying in rent, plus they now have a tax deduction), hires a terrific architect, and manages to not only survive—but to relish the process. The young couple (he’s 33, she’s 32) had the foresight to engage Ventura architect CJ Paone before they even bought the house to make sure it had “good bones” and could be remodeled to serve their needs and desires. “They wanted their home to be comfortable for just them, or for them and a few friends, and to grow with family while still being able to entertain,” noted the soft-spoken Paone. }}

I arrived on the last day of the second phase of Syd and Dari’s house project. Phase one, the kitchen remodel, took three months to complete. Phase two, which also took three months, was the master bedroom and bath. “CJ helped us divide the project into phases, which was great both financially and psychically. He also connected us with our contractor, Mike Davis, who was really our speed,” said father-to-be Syd, a musician of note. The duo met and fell in love 14 years ago while attending Emerson College in Boston. Syd, who is well known in indiepop circles, grew up in Vermont and writes, sings, and produces what he refers to as “Cabin grown music.” (His new CD, “Easy Magic,” will be out later this year.) Dari is a sales and marketing executive who has helped grow a Ventura-based cosmetics company created by her stepfather into a major international brand. After stints in Brooklyn, L.A., and Carpinteria, the couple moved back to Dari’s hometown of Ventura and rented a small house overlooking downtown. “Ventura was a great place to come home to and felt like a safe haven, but we weren’t part of the surf gang or the Patagonia group,” said the globetrotting couple. So when they were hit with a rent increase, they turned lemons into lemonade and made the leap into home ownership, moving to nearby Meiners Oaks. “We didn’t know we were ready to buy a place, but we did the calculations and realtor Sean O’Toole helped us become first-time buyers. All we knew was that we wanted something unique,” said Syd. CJ Paone first contacted Syd regarding music for a website video, and he eventually joined the couple as they hunted for the ideal house. When they came across this property, they knew a move to the Ojai Valley would suit their lifestyle. They purchased the 1,800-square-foot, three bedroom, two-bath abode about a year-and-a-half ago.

“We fell in love with this house when we first saw it. But we wanted CJ

to confirm that it could withstand what we wanted to do. He was so patient, and he even helped us manage our budget,” said Dari. Although the couple wanted CJ to make decisions on certain materials, he instead provided options and the rationale behind them so they could be true partners in the design process. “We inspired each other, and we all hit it off and made detailed decisions via committee,” Dari noted. “I would love to do it again—except for the part of living onsite during construction.” In the process, the couple tried every single restaurant in Ojai, made an outdoor kitchen on an old table, and had a lot of microwave meals. “It was a fun, exciting first big project for us,” she continued. “The interior looked like a scene from Breaking Bad, but despite tape and plastic everywhere, we survived. In fact, we got pregnant!” The remodel now serves the couple well. It’s almost baby-ready, and 23 friends and family members filled the home for Thanksgiving dinner. “Biologically, we are in nesting mode; we just want to be folding and putting things away,” laughed Dari. But apparently it’s not that easy. “Ojai is to L.A. what the Hamptons are to New York City,” she continued. “People want to come up here for the weekend—and sometimes we just have to turn them away!” v LOCATION Meiners Oaks DESIGN ARCHITECT CJ Paone AIA, Archipelago Workshop 805.451.6914, cjpaone.com GENERAL CONTRACTOR Mike Davis, Davis Brothers Construction 805.218.4397 PAINTING AND FINISHING Shawn Echevarria, Hotsteppers Painting 805.766.8765, hotstepperspainting.com

A ROMANCE OF 3 DIAMONDS

A long-time friend and client was celebrating one of the big anniversaries. He had her original engagement ring Diamond that was an early modern cut. Here are two of the variations we explored before deciding which one to make. I found two matching early modern cut Diamonds for some additional sparkle. The 1.5” pendant is in White and Yellow Gold, the chain is petite. Ready to mount your family Diamond, a design like this could range from under $600 to a semi-mount with small Diamonds and a chain at about $1500. People are often surprised that Custom Design can be less costly than buying a mass produced piece.
