EDITOR’S NOTE
A HOUSE, A HOME
O
ur cover story this month veers off the common path of an architectural piece and into the realm of human interest. Writer Leslie Westbrook has a wonderful way of making that happen. In this case, rather than focusing on hardware and cold specs, she explores the relationships that developed between homeowner, architect, interior designer, and others in the cadre of contributors to this Moorish/ Mediterranean-inspired abode. Local homeowners comprise the bulk of our readership, and we publish a couple Home + Garden-themed issues per year. But the idea isn’t simply to detail the construction of nice local houses. It’s to share stories about the people within, and the people down the street or in the next town who helped manifest the dream. It’s about homes, not houses. In many ways, homebuilding parallels the construction of this magazine. It’s very much a fluid process, with myriad pieces shifting and flowing, working their way around obstacles right up until the moment we send each issue to press. And it’s anything but a solo flight. Dozens of people, from freelance writers and photographers to a staff of account executives, help build Ventana month after month. Then, of course, we have our advertisers. Ideally, the magazine becomes something of a self-perpetuating engine: a sustainable and mutually beneficial cycle that works to promote our community and its economy. Sustainability has been on my mind lately. Droughts and floods. I wrote an article about sustainable gardening recently and was taken by the way a garden can be viewed as a microcosm of the world at large. There are human-aphids among us,

and beneficial “insects” too. Ads fertilize the economic soil from which businesses grow. As I write these words, a trio of hurricanes is spinning across the Pacific, feeding on abnormally warm water. It’s the first time this has ever been seen. Climatic anomalies have been hinting at a rainy Southern California winter for months, and by now most meteorologists would bet their homes on it. Like many local homeowners, I’ve begun clearing storm drains and cutting back bushes in front of my property to ease the water toward a nearby creek rather than into my garage. I plan to install a couple wooden cisterns beneath our rain gutters. What I’d really like to see, though, are larger yet equally simple systems designed to harvest rainwater when it does come. This isn’t rocket science; I’ve seen peasant farmers dig large holes in autumn so their animals have ponds to drink from come summer. Sustainability has long been an uncontrived product of necessity. In terms of gardening, it is sort of the bouillabaisse of the agricultural world: a quintessentially simple poor man’s meal that’s evolved into a perceived delicacy. While xeriscaping may be the poster child for sustainability in California, drought-tolerance is but a single element in a bigger picture. Like a garden, the success of our society depends largely on the management of limited resources. Resources that may arrive in an impoverished trickle or drop all at once in a lottery-style flood. Though you wouldn’t know it by looking at our parched hills and mud puddle lakes, we do get rain around here. We just have to be smarter about harvesting it when it does come. – Matt Katz mattk@ventanamonthly.com

4 YOU GOT SERVED 2015 COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT More than 600 Cal Lutheran University students kicked off the 2015 school year by participating in the 8th annual “You Got Served” community service project partnership with the City of Ventura. The students, working with CLU faculty, community volunteers, and staff from the City of Ventura and the Ventura Hillsides Conservancy, removed invasive Arundo donax from the Ventura River Estuary, where it creates numerous problems. Over the past seven years, more than 4,000 CLU students have helped clean up the community, ridding the Ventura and Santa Clara riverbeds of trash and Arundo, stripping tons of ice plant from the Ventura Harbor Wetlands, and beautifying five local parks. This year’s event included a partnership with the VHC, a land trust dedicated to protecting and conserving Ventura’s open space resources. For volunteer opportunities and more information, visit venturahillsides.org.

CONVERSATION
If you’re looking for Mike, chances are you’ll find him at the workbench in his Somis studio, wall-mounted hand tools within reach.
SHOP TALK
Camarillo’s Mike Pecsok on the art and craft of fine woodworking. INTERVIEW BY RYAN A. SMITH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIM RIDDLE-HALAMICEK
W
orking in a venerable trade that has long balanced function and form, 29-year-old Camarillo native Mike Pecsok designs finely crafted furniture pieces that transcend trends, style, and time. He unapologetically utilizes classic tools and techniques in his handmade woodworking shop, adding inspired, modern flair to his pieces wherever he sees fit. Mike was fresh off his “I’ll Be in My Shop” show at the Studio Channel Islands’ Blackboard Gallery when we met at the exhibition space to discuss his passion for woodworking and the path that led him to this place in time. You’re relatively young. What first drew you to the age-old trade of woodworking furniture? As a little kid, I was always interested in tools, mechanical things. I didn’t want toys for my birthday; I wanted lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and vacuums. Ultimately, the reason I got into woodworking was due to the accessibility of the tools. Was it the assembling and disassembling of those machines that piqued your interest? Yes. My grandpa and I would take things apart and fix them. He
also had a very good friend who was a marble contractor, and he became like a mentor to me when I was a little kid. He gave me my first tool belt and taught me how to use screwdrivers. Did your woodworking passion carry through high school? I’ve always been interested in building things. In high school, one of my good friend’s father was constantly working on projects in his garage. I spent time making things with his dad and learning the basics. Around that time, I decided to build my own shop and outfit it, little by little. On summer breaks }}

during college, I spent a lot of time in my shop. It was one of my favorite things about summer. You attended California Maritime Academy but didn’t follow that career path, opting instead for construction work and, eventually, a full-time management position with Rain for Rent. How has woodworking remained a goal in your life? I graduated in 2008, during the big economy bust, and there were really no jobs available within my degree. So, for about a year, I worked in the building trade: concrete, framing, steel stud framing… you name it. Then I went to Europe when those contracts got slimmer, did the aftercollege traveling thing. When I came home, I was hired by a cabinetmaker in Camarillo, working in the shop then doing installations, crown molding, and finish carpentry. Since I had already built my own woodshop, I was acquiring tools and making furniture on weekends and nights. Why woodworking? I like shaping solid wood, starting out with something thick and whittling it down to get a shape. Do you include other materials in your designs? I’ve started to get into metal more. For example, inside this rolling pin (seen hanging on the gallery wall), there’re aluminum spindles in here that I machined on my lathe. The goal here was to make a better rolling pin for my girlfriend. She had one I was looking at, and I thought, ‘I can make a better one.’ Does being a Camarillo native impact your work? My family has been in Camarillo since the ’50s, and I was born here. I have a lot of opportunities here that I wouldn’t have elsewhere. I don’t have to pay rent at my shop, since it’s on part of my family’s property in Somis. I also know a lot of people in town, which enables me to build items through word-of-mouth. Camarillo is a community I love to live in. I see lot of negative space in your pieces. Is it by design? Yes. It is by design, but it’s not like I begin with the negative space involved. That’s just the way my mind works. I didn’t go to art school to utilize negative space in the appropriate manner. I’m not making a statement. With my pieces, the negative space just fits my eye. For example, here (he points to a slender-legged cabinet in curly maple that features half-blind dovetails), the legs have a negative space in them. If you look at the transition between the legs and the stretcher, there’s a circular negative space there.

It transitions from the top, from the horizontal piece to the bottom piece. If you can envision a five-inch radius, you would see it right here. Whose designs influence you? Probably Sam Maloof, who passed away recently. Maloof’s work, his style, has influenced my work in the shaping of things. Starting with something large, something bulky, and then shaping it away to something nice. His overall design premise is different than mine; but his transitions and planes influence me. That’s what he did very well. Is your furniture based in any specific period or design style? I have no formal training in art, so it’s tough for me to say, ‘This or that is my style.’ You could spin this into a positive, though. What I’m making isn’t based in any one genre. It came out of my mind; it’s not an art deco replica or something from the ’50s or whatever. I just make and shape things to fit my eye. You don’t pay attention to artistic trends? When I’m around other artists or art majors, they sometimes see my work and say, ‘Oh, that’s very modern-minimalist.’ I respond, ‘Well, thank you!’ But, the truth is, I feel slightly ignorant inside because I couldn’t tell you a specific detail of any style of art. Overall, though, I think that lack of knowledge can open creative doors because I’m not following any design cues. Do you consider yourself an “artist”? While it is flattering that I’ve gained attention as an “artist” for my work, I really never intended for it to be that way. I consider myself a mechanic of the woodworking trade. I concentrate on the tools and how to get from one step to the next. If a finished piece is considered art, that’s secondary to me. Since you don’t seem to find inspiration in art books or design centers, where do you find it? I pick up tiny aspects of design and technique everywhere. For example (he points to a table), this “Bay Bridge” table was inspired by driving across the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge while it was being rebuilt. I find inspiration in architecture, machinery, mechanical things, infrastructure. I like things that are round and symmetrical. Speaking of round things and machinery, why build wooden bicycles? I’m active in the bicycle community. My good friend Zach Barker owns Life Cycles Bike Shop in Camarillo, and he challenged me to build a bike out of wood. Initially, I said, ‘No way.’ I didn’t want to wrap my head around it at the time. But he challenged me again a
couple months later and I agreed to do it. And this was definitely a challenge. This was not simply designing a piece of furniture, this was designing a piece of furniture around bike parts that have to function, which limits most parameters. Then you have to engineer it so the wood is working for you and is strong enough to ride, plus make it aesthetically pleasing. How was the trial and error process? The original was finished two summers ago. It worked very well, and I entered it in some shows to good reviews. Later, I broke a part during a ride around Camarillo, a part that I sort of knew was going to be a weak point. I had already invested $2,000 in bike parts and wasn’t going to just throw the whole idea away. So I redesigned this part entirely by using bent lamination, which is very strong, making this part basically unbreakable. Something else would fail first.
With your works, does form lead function, or vice versa? My philosophy is that form follows function. It has to be functional first. And I often add little design things for purpose. For example, on this set of night tables, this little brass accent adds interesting visual complexity to the piece and the color scheme, but it’s actually a halfinch hole designed to accept a pegged lamp. Additionally, I discovered an iPhone cord fits through the bottom – so you can charge your phone right here, which looks neater. When I build something for a house, I want it integrated to where you can’t see any cords or wires, and there are secret compartments specially designed to hold very specific items.
What projects are growing in your head now? The recent Blackboard Gallery show consumed a lot of my time, along with my full-time job. But I’d like to design a different bicycle model. So far, these are built for cruising, yet they look like mountain bikes. I want to make a bona fide beach cruiser, utilizing four-inch fat tires. The way wood actually rides, it absorbs road vibrations differently than aluminum, carbon fiber, or steel, and I think that quality would be perfect for a beach cruiser to ride on the street and on the sand. I also want to design a modified entertainment center for my house. I have some ideas for a few new glass-top tables, too, and I really want to build a bed for myself.

TOP: Form meets function in the Blackboard Gallery at SCIART. This wooden bike was the product of a challenge from Pecsok’s friend Zach Barker, the owner of Camarillo’s Life Cycles Bike Shop. ABOVE: Half-blind dovetails join the curly maple carcass of a James Krenov-influenced cabinet on a stand. Pecsok utilized a joint not typically seen in furniture (a mitered-haunched dovetail) to connect the legs of the walnut base to the skirt, or stretchers.

THE SWEET LIFE
For artist Anna Julien and her daughter, Mia, a rustic ‘20s-era cabin offers a cozy retreat from the big city — and a link to Ojai’s storied past. BY AMELIA FLEETWOOD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL MOOORE “WE CALL OUR HOUSE THE ‘SUGAR SHACK,’” says Anna Julien in her native Aussie twang. An artist and natural beauty, Anna shares the home with her ten-year-old daughter, Mia, and an assortment of small farm animals: goats, bunnies, chickens, and ducks—the “Cute Farm,” Mia calls it. The serenity of the nearby Topa Topa mountains and the naturefilled promise of Ojai lured the pair away from the fray of Los Angeles nearly two years ago. “The moment I stepped onto this property, my whole body language changed. I had such an intense feeling about being here,” Anna says of her first visit to the storied cabin, built in 1921, and adjoining dance studio (added later). Set on nearly two secluded acres in the east end of Ojai, the property is sur-
rounded by birds, butterflies, and peaceful neighbors. The Sugar Shack, or main house, is a romantic wooden cabin. It is at once rustic and charming, open and inviting, with 1921 panes of wavy glass filling large window frames. Everything is original. It’s like stepping back in time. In the ’20s, the property was part of a much larger community, a section of eminent theosophist Mary Gray’s estate. It was there that Krishnamurti and his followers made their home. Years later, the property was purchased by ballerina Billie Berrie, who retired to the one-room cabin in the ’50s. Berrie added the maple sprung floor dance hall, where she taught the latest steps to neighborhood children. “This place has been reincarnated so many

times,” says Anna. “But it has always been a place for people to gather. So many people I’ve met around town have a story to tell about the property.” Indeed, Ojai folklore boasts of luminaries such as John Lennon and Aldous Huxley visiting the bridge at the edge of her garden. In the 1990s, the house was owned by permaculturalist Tom Brown, who planted orchards and created a garden filled with unusual fruit trees: cherimoya, guava, jujube, persimmon, Mexican lime, grapefruit, cuties, macadamia nut, apricot, plum, and more. True to the principles of permaculture, a number of legume trees were also planted, their sole purpose to feed and create mulch for the nearby fruit trees. “There’s always something in bloom or about to fruit,” says Anna, an avid garden-lover, with a broad smile. Even their growing menagerie has a purpose, in addition to being cute. The manure gets tipped around the fruit trees, and goats are living compost machines. They eat all the clippings from the yard, and also provide good company on long walks in the neighborhood. Anna is remaining true to the artistic roots of her home. She uses the light and airy dance hall as a community room. A handcrafted, reclaimed oak table that was left behind a few owners ago is perfectly placed for entertaining, while still leaving room for musical instruments and the art studio where she paints and sculpts. Since moving to Ojai, Anna finds her days increasingly productive. “I’ve just finished a huge acrylic painting of Chief’s Peak (an iconic local mountain). I usually paint very controlled and precise still lifes, so this was really fun. I think the space and the view inspire me on a daily basis. Life at the Sugar Shack is good for Anna and her daughter. “Creating, whether it be gardening or art, adds to the enjoyment of my life,” she says. “For me, there’s nothing more valuable than a beautiful landscape to make me happy and change my mood.” v
A loyal companion and a pastoral porch. At day’s end, Anna and Millie enjoy a quiet moment outside the art studio.

ABOUT TOWN
A WALK IN THE GARDEN Nature’s bounty takes center stage as local plant guide Lanny Kaufer leads an ethnobotanical tour of Ventura’s Seaside Wilderness Park. BY KEN MCALPINE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN
ABOVE: Lanny Kaufer enlightens a group on the subject of Sweet Fennel, an abundant nonnative plant whose seeds are widely used in Italian cooking.. RIGHT: The edible flowers of Foeniculum vulgare.
J
OHN MUIR ONCE FAMOUSLY SAID,
“In every walk with Nature one receives far more than he seeks.” From life-changing vistas to full body poison oak, I have found this famously true, but I could have avoided the poison oak had I met Lanny Kaufer earlier. As it was, I listened instead to a friend who bent, examined an innocuous plant on the outer edge of a vast hillside of similarly featured innocuous plants, and declared, “It’s not poison oak.” What I learned from that botanical experience was simple. Regarding plant identification, few people are to be trusted, and when you yourself are itching like a hound dog touring a flea farm there is but small satisfaction in seeing your misguided friend come down with a rash worse than yours. Lanny Kaufer does know plants. He has been making a study of them since, as he puts it, “I was first introduced to the idea that you could make tea from a plant.” Since 1967 Kaufer has been leading Herb Walks, primarily in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, with the aim of introducing folks to plants that can be used rightly for food and medicine and, in the case of poison oak, plants that should be avoided though perhaps not maligned, for as Lanny teaches, poison oak serves its purpose too. Lanny’s mission is simple. To pass on the time-honored knowledge of our predecessors regarding }}

plants of ethnobotanical importance. To save you the trouble of looking it up like I did, that would be plants with a history of human usage. Long before we identified our plants in the vegetable aisle at Vons, our predecessors plucked them from the wild, using them for everything from food to alleviating diaper rash. Lanny is passing that knowledge on. And so we stand, a floppy-hatted assemblage of roughly 18 men and women who have signed on for Lanny’s three-hour Herb Walk, listening attentively as Lanny points to a bush bobbing happily in the summer sun here on the northern edge of Ventura. Today’s walk will take us through Seaside Wilderness Park to the mouth of the Ventura River, and out on to the sand dunes lining the beach. If you know this walk, you may wonder why a hike that can be done in ten minutes takes three hours. I refer you to Lanny Kaufer and John Muir, and the value of observing Nature. The bush behind Lanny is Sweet Fennel, Foeniculum vulgare, a member of the Carrot family (Apiaceae), not that you’re going to remember any of that by the end of this sentence. But what you might remember is that Sweet Fennel is the Walmart of plants. “There’s always something edible on the fennel,” Lanny tells us. “Right now, it’s the flowers.” Lanny steps aside, and we descend. As you may know, the flowers taste like exactly like black licorice. This impresses everyone. My new friend Bill Tindula, a retired teacher from Nipomo, chews contemplatively and says, “Really good.” His wife, Kathy, chirps brightly, “On our last hike with Lanny, I brought biscotti!” Perhaps in our enthusiasm we are a bit too ardent in our sampling. It may be possible to mow a head-high bush to the nub. Lanny politely bestows a nugget of conservation. “There’s a rule not to take more than ten percent of a plant, and unless you see a lot of a plant in one place you shouldn’t pick from it at all.” Lanny points out that the Chumash usually gave thanks to the plant they were using. And not without reason. “I mean, where would we be without plants?” asks Lanny. “For starters, oxygen.”

I like Lanny. He counsels care, but not like a crotchety museum docent. Knowledgeable to the nth degree, he does not lord it over those of us who would easily eat lookalike hemlock instead of fennel (instead of licorice, paralysis). Lanny’s childish sense of fun and wry sense of humor remind me of Gandalf, though Lanny knows more about plants. Our group varies in expertise from — me, to an intense fellow named Cash who records Lanny’s every word and tells me, “I’m an herbalist.” Like any good teacher, Lanny doesn’t demand too much of his charges. “We’re out here to get to know the plants face to face, but we can’t do it all,” he tells us as we troop, licorice-mouthed, away from the Fennel. I like my fellow herb walkers. They fearlessly ask the questions I would ask. “Do you just come out here and eat sometimes?” asks Bill, my schoolteacher friend. “I just nibble,” Lanny responds. Bill and Kathy, who drove down from Nipomo this morning, have a fine purpose to their trip. “I like to go into Nature and know what I’m seeing,” Kathy says.
Quickly we see that largesse is everywhere. A few steps from the Fennel, Lanny pokes at a bobbing, yellow flowered bush. “Summer Mustard,” says Lanny. “The flowers are edible. Tastes like wasabi. We’re getting all the weeds out of the way. I love how the tastes circulate on your tongue and rise up through your nose.” Indeed. I turn away so no one can see me crying. Officially we are discovering the plants of the Riparian Woodland, Coastal Sage Scrub, and Coastal Strand plant communities, but Kathy has noticed something else.

ABOVE: Native Cattails (Typha species) are used in “phytoremediation programs to remove pollutants from water. Those growing in clean water, however, have edible parts with a mild taste and loads of vitamins A, B, and C, as well as potassium and phosphorus. LEFT: Poisonous to eat, native Datura (Datura wrightii) flowers have been used medicinally since ancient times. OPPOSITE: Rosa californica, the only rose native to the local area.

“We’re not even out of the campground yet.” Truth be told, my favorite plants are the nasty ones. Lanny introduces us to Poison Hemlock, and Datura, and, as we move close to the Ventura River, my personal Waterloo: the despised Poison Oak. Lanny tells us how to spot Poison Oak, though it’s Bill’s ID I remember best. Leaning close, Bill whispers, “If it’s shiny, watch your hiney. It’s what I used to tell my sixth graders.” Lanny smiles at a vast expanse of the damn stuff, a literal floor beneath the forest of Cottonwood and Willow. “Everything we’re standing on is poison oak roots,” Lanny says. “It’s holding all this leaf litter in place so that the young plants can get established. None of this would be here without the poison oak.” I am not the only one who is seeing with new eyes. As we walk beside the Ventura River in lovely dappled shade and tinctures of cool, a woman

beside me shakes her head. “I had no idea. I’ve run past these plants dozens of times.” Out on the beach we discover more plants of improbable beauty (Evening Primrose) and yummy function (Pickleweed). Lanny often sprinkles the latter on his salad. “It’s only edible when it’s green, but if you find young, tender shoots, ooohhhh, that’s something else,” he says. Nor is it just about instant gustatory gratification. “Pickleweed is now being studied intensively as a possible biofuel and a food source because it can grow in salty water.” Everywhere, discovery. Lanny knows his place in this fascinating world. He smiles easily. “Once you aspire to be a naturalist that takes a few lifetimes. So I’m trying to make the most of this one.” v

A thoughtfully designed landscape softens the scale of the home’s tall walls, while a sweeping Moorish-detailed staircase leads to the front door.
PERFECT HARMONY Making the most of a limited space, a local collaboration creates a modern Moorish-meets-Mediterranean palace in the hills of Ventura. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GASZTON GAL
I
T FEELS LIKE A LOVE FEST. Ventura architect Martha Picciotti, interior designer Elayne Jordan, landscape architect Paul Hendershot, and building contractor Mike Conner worked in collaboration with their thoughtful client, a Ventura physician, to design and create a dreamy, contemporary, Moorish/Mediterranean-influenced Ventura hillside abode. Their intention was to layer spaces on a small lot, using light and dark along with pleasing transitional spaces for interplay within the confines of the limited square footage. Utilizing grilles and screens and a Moroccan theme throughout the house, much in the tradition of noted California architect Julia Morgan (the designer of Hearst Castle), the team accomplished their goal to create a haven both interesting and serene. And what’s even better is that when all was said and done, everyone involved had become friends. What more poignant sign of a great collaboration? With vast views and fig trees rooted to its pale yellow exterior walls, the edifice offers a playful balance of perpendicular and curving lines. Succulents and rosemary abound, and cassia trees were ready to
bloom as I climbed a staircase to the landing and rang a bronze bell at the front glass door. Three of the four main people responsible for the home welcomed me in to talk shop. The trio — owner, architect, and interior designer — spoke almost as one voice, by their own admission, but each shared their individual thoughts since completion. “The design went quickly. My client would come over and we’d sit side by side at my computer,” said Ventura architect Martha Picciotti. “We’d go back and forth, and in a few weeks we had a 3-D plan. It was so much fun, and so productive, and the client is a wonderful woman with a fantastic eye. We worked really well together.” The client, a local professional who prefers to remain anonymous, considered architecture as a career at one time and had been following Picciotto’s work for many years. When she tore down the original house, she hired Picciotti for the job. The architect brought in the interior designer, who in turn introduced the landscape architect to the project. The main floor of the three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath, 2650-square-foot house consists of an open living room, a kitchen, }}

and a dining room, as well as an office, master bedroom/ bath, and tiny, sky-lit powder room. The lower level has two bedrooms and a connecting bath that provide private guest quarters. Designing and building the hillside house on a narrow lot with panoramic views of city and sea was “challenging,” noted Picciotti. “After being hired we talked about inspirations, including a stunning stone staircase in the courtyard of the Mission San Carlos in Carmel. The owner, familiar with the staircase, was completely on board with the importance of creating a beautiful entry.” Ironically, the house is filled with etchings of the California Missions (including one of the Carmel Mission) by artist Mary J. Coulter (1880-1966), which were inherited from the owner’s grandfather. Ventura-based interior designer Elayne Jordan’s contemporary slant was a perfect fit for the busy homeowner, who was looking for a sort of Zen-inspired serenity. Pulling inspiration from a range of ethnic Mediterranean influences, Jordan created a sense of modern calm, using her color palette to add to the serenity of the interior space. She thoughtfully curated the owner’s extensive collection of fine art and artifacts, including bone fossils, inherited silver pieces, and even eye-catching etchings she’d created in high school. “Taking something ordinary and putting it in a place of prominence gives it gravitas,” the designer noted, referring to a trio of celadon ceramic vases in the office bookshelves. Jordan selected furniture and unique fabrics, and enlisted Ventura Avenue woodworker Brett Jordan (who happens to be her son) to add another unique layer to the collaborative effort. The house is particularly stunning due to the furnishings and cabinetry he built, including a handsome dining table, a unique bench in the stairwell landing, bedside tables, and cabinetry fashioned from walnut wood.

Landscape walls extend outward from the building and lead into a secret garden. The back of the house, rooted into the landscape, includes an enviable master bathroom that opens out to a sweet little vegetable and herb garden, an outdoor cooking area with a sink, and a trio of fruitless mulberry trees that are being trained to form a canopy over the al fresco dining area. Hendershot designed simple Mediterranean-based landscapes with lots of gravel and simple stonewalls as a way to set the house off and ground it into the landscape. “I’ve been living in the house for two years now and love the serene feel of it,” the homeowner said, “I come home after a busy day at work and go, ‘ahhhh…’” “The owner listened to everybody the whole way through and let everybody do his or her magic,” concludes Picciotti. “We felt like we were all on the same wavelength. For a tiny house, it is completely seductive.” v ARCHITECT OF RECORD Martha Picciotti 805.641.3221, picciottidesign.com INTERIOR DESIGN Elayne Jordan 805.766.8757, elayne.anabasis@yahoo.com BUILDING CONTRACTOR MC and Son Construction 805.890.3246, mcandsonbuilders.com GARDENS AND HARDSCAPE Paul Hendershot Design 805.646.7199, paulhendershotdesign.com PLUMBING AND FIXTURES Vic’s Plumbing Supply 805.643.4565, vicssupply.com CABINETRY California Designers Choice 805.987.1080, cdcc-inc.com SPECIALTY CABINETS Brett Jordan, bwilliamdesign 805.477.8356, jordan@bwilliamdesign.com WROUGHT IRON Chapala Iron and Manufacturing 805.654.9803, chapalairon.com COUNTERTOPS Pacific Stoneworks 805.648.4098, pacificstoneworks.net TILE Tileco 805.658.0677, tilecodist.com LIGHTING Lights Beautiful 805.643.0883, lightsbeautiful.com RUGS Area Rug Factory 805.644.5571, arearugfactory.com

This Mid-Century classic home designed by Michael Chalfant Head, son of the noted California architect Randolph Chalfant Head, has remained in the family from the time it was built. The design mirrors influences from Michael Head’s time in Vienna, where he studied architecture. The original circle-in-square plan of the house, its surrounding walls, and the Koi pond embody Head’s efforts to apply Renaissance design principles to a modern home. The 1600 sq. ft. house on a 3/4 acre lot features three bedrooms and two bathrooms, as well as a detached accessory building that could be used as a studio or office. One of those unique homes that rarely come on the market - and waiting for the discriminating buyer.

SHORT LIST INSANELY BEAUTIFUL
Through September 20 | Galerie102, Ojai Galerie102 will present “Insanely Beautiful,” a solo show of new works by internationally renowned artist Britt Ehringer, who examines the subjective expression of beauty in our culture and its outer boundaries through paintings, photography, and sculpture. A selftaught artist with an irreverent pop-art sensibility and a penchant for tongue in cheek social commentary, Ehringer deftly layers color, image, and social message with his multiple use of mediums. 102 W. Matilija St., Ojai. For more information, visit galerie102.com.
COPENHAGEN
September 2–27 | Rubicon Theatre Company, Ventura This play will star Brett Rickaby and Peter Van Norden as German nuclear scientist Werner Heisenberg and Jewish physicist Niels Bohr. The world-renowned scientists come together in the afterlife to understand their brief, mysterious meeting, which took place in occupied Copenhagen during WWII. Science brought them together, yet politics divided them. Their encounter is filled with memories and memory lapses, affection and denial. 1006 E. Main St., Ventura. For more information, visit rubicontheatre.org.
THE BARRELHOUSE WAILERS
September 12 | Santa Paula Art Museum The Santa Paula Art Museum will host an evening of live music featuring Ventura’s “The Barrelhouse Wailers.” The band serves up their own take on Prohibition era hot jazz and blues music of the 1920s and 1930s. They perform only on acoustic instruments to retain the authentic sound of that period. The Wailers bring their passion and energy to the style, making it as fresh today as it was when it was the newest, hottest dance music 90 years ago. 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. General admission $15, $10 for members of the Santa Paula Art Museum. For more information, call 805.525.5554.

VENTURA COUNTY BIRD CLUB AUCTION
SEPT 19
CHRIS BOTTI, LIVE IN CONCERT
September 24 | Ventura Moose Lodge The Ventura County Bird Club will host a live and silent auction fundraiser that will be open to the public. The auction will consist of jewelry, art, and gift baskets, as well as sports, cycling, and hiking equipment. The club began with a few men and women who wanted to improve their knowledge of breeding and bird habitats. It has since strived, through education of its members and the public, to bring about an increase in avian awareness and to help maintain and preserve all bird species and their natural habitats. 7:30 p.m. Ventura Moose Lodge #1394, 10267 Telephone Rd., Ventura. Attendance is free, and all are welcome. For more information, call 805.488.6244.
THE BEACH BOYS
September 25 | Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza You can encapsulate most pop music acts by reciting how many hits they’ve had and how many millions of albums they’ve sold. To be sure, The Beach Boys have birthed a torrent of hit singles and sold albums by the tens of millions. But their greater significance lies in the fact that they changed the musical landscape so profoundly that every pop act since has been in its debt. In 2015, The Beach Boys continue to create and perform with the same bold imagination and style that marked their explosive debut 50 years ago. 8 p.m. Fred Kavli Theatre. 2100 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks. For more information, visit civicartsplaza.com.

Together they form a dynamic real estate duo! We just recently lost an important friend to cancer this month. His beautiful widow discussed about how he had left her in a comfortable financial position until about the age of 90 and then she still has her home to sell. I was wondering how many of us are that blessed. there are many reasons to buy a home... home ownership is a superb tax shelter and our tax rates favor homeowners.
