EDITOR’S NOTE
UNDIVINE COMEDY
A
T A CERTAIN POINT, FAILURE BECOMES comedy. That’s what I was telling myself in midto late fall, anyway, as stories for this New Year issue fizzled in succession, teetering like drunken dominoes before crumbling flat, each dragging the next in line down to the alley gravel. You may see some of these Bukowskis in 2014. But not in this issue. Of course I should’ve known better. It’s always this way around the holiday season. Heading my short list of editorial resolutions in 2014? Coordinate January 2015 stories well in advance; hibernate in December. The original idea was an assemblage of forward-looking articles: profiles of local visionaries, a showcase of an ultra-contemporary home—that sort of thing. But one by one potential stories flopped. Some hissed and exploded. Others died a lingering death, tempting optimism before slipping into the ether. In the case of our Nesting feature (p. 28), we ultimately succumbed to the lure of poetic irony. Jamie Kohler’s rearview mirror approach to interior design—everything in her Ventura home is pre-owned, most of it vintage—was so radically divergent from our original idea, it gained traction as something of a winsome dark horse and took us in a new direction. At the end of the day, we flipped a U-turn and pulled the trigger. And I’m glad we did. You see, as much as I love contemporary design, I always lean toward stories with a powerful human element. This one’s

not merely a photo-loaded showcase of Kohler’s home, it’s a glimpse into her soul. It takes us into her personal history and illustrates how she came to be the wonderfully offbeat marcher she is today. Our Conversation article (p. 33) has a similar past-leadsto-present twist, which I hadn’t considered until just now. Darren Alff grew up a shy, socially awkward kid in Camarillo. The challenge of long-distance cycling—“bicycle touring” for days, months, even years—was nothing compared to the daunting prospect of “having to interact with other people on a daily basis,” as he put it. But Alff not only rose to the challenge, taking his first bike tour at age 17, he fed off the sense of accomplishment and went on to create his own company and the world’s most popular bicycle touring website. Now he pedals around the planet, living his dream. And it all began with resolve—a firm commitment to get from A to Z in spite of those anxiety-provoking letters in between. I can’t imagine doing what he does. I simply hope my rusty old mountain bike sees a little more sunshine this year. That I manage to drag my carcass off the alley gravel and tumble in a good direction. I’ve had enough comic failure. Time to roll on, into the wild blue yonder of 2014. – Matt Katz mattk@ventanamonthly.com

future builders Trans FX: cutting-edge creative fabrication on the Oxnard Plain BY MARK STORER IT’S ALWAYS THE SMALL, NONDESCRIPT PLACES THAT house the most interesting things. At Burbank Airport, under everyone’s noses in the 1960s, Lockheed Skunk Works was busy building ultra-fast and highflying aircraft to help win the Cold War. In Cheshire, England, BAC built the Mono Car, a street legal single occupant speed demon sure to rattle your brains and bleed you of your common sense—and your bank account. But on Eastman Avenue in Oxnard, there’s a 25,000-square-foot building where they’re doing something totally different. Nondescript is probably the best way to put it, for Allen Pike’s company, Trans FX, is really quite difficult to describe. They don’t do CGI and they don’t build mock-ups. They do build Hollywood dream vehicles and otherworldly spacecraft, and they even design buildings, or portions of them, not to mention the odd aircraft part. But TFX isn’t a group of nerds who’ve made good… well, okay, yes it is. But it’s more than that, too. “I have a hard time describing what we do,” said Pike. “Our customers come to us with an idea that exists in a different way
and we build the real thing.” With a client list that includes Disney and Pixar, among many others, Pike and his core of artists and artisans produce items as diverse as life-sized representations of animated movie characters and even the Batmobile. “I started as an automotive designer with GM,” said Pike. “But I was more interested in what happens after the sketch than doing the sketches. I went to work for GM right out of school at a really high level … I got a good opportunity to be a part of process that was rapidly changing.” Pike worked in California in a design studio where he said he and his colleagues were able to experiment with technologies that were just emerging in the ‘80s, like computer aided design, which could accelerate the process of designing cars. GM was already falling behind and was looking for faster ways to get from the sketchpad to the test track. “I learned a tremendous amount about what it takes to design something and build it. We were given complete freedom in those

days. We were told to design a car, build it, and get it ready for the press and the public in something like an auto show,” Pike said. In those days, GM was purchasing Silicon Graphics computers that were the size of a full desk. “Those things were processing data that your laptop can do now. And back then, if they got too hot they’d catch on fire.” Times have changed. Pike said that while he has great appreciation for what GM has accomplished over the years, he fell victim to the sclerosis of the company’s upper management decisions in those days. GM wasn’t keeping them busy. “Some of the other guys and I started building cars for film after hours using some of the processes that we had learned from GM that no one else had access to,” Pike said. “We got hired to work on a TV series, a pilot called Fast Lane. The show never went anywhere, but a production designer from Warner Brothers noticed Pike and his team. That recognition got Pike and his partners a job building a life-sized Batmobile for Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever. “We built a really great car for that film, and at that point we lost our jobs at GM, so we made a choice—that’s how we started TFX.” Another Batman movie, Batman and Robin, came out of Pike’s first efforts. “It wasn’t a great movie,” he recalled, “but we got to build the

car, and those are working, high-performance vehicles.” TFX was born out of the crucible of building specialized projects, mostly for movies. “We now have about 25 employees and can scale up when we have to. The movie business is pretty nomadic, so technicians and craftsmen can move from job to job, but our core group is about that big.” Gearheads, computer nerds, technicians, artists—Pike and his team have backgrounds that cover every young person’s dreams. They began using digital tools around the time such things were born: “We bought software in the early days that cost $116,000; a couple years later you could buy that software for 25 bucks. We were still making payments on it when it became mass marketed.” Pike said that the cost is the downside of being on the cutting edge, but the upside is that he and the TFX team get to use some pretty special equipment. “These are really talented, technical, and creative people,” said Pike. “I love cars. But I also like architecture and art, and we get to do all of that here.” TFX is relatively secretive about particulars of projects, even of personnel who do the work, but recent years have seen them go into aircraft material science and processes. “That has occupied a lot of our time and we like doing it” Pike explained. “Our clients send us sophisticated
computer files of exactly what they want to build. The challenge is using their materials, like carbon fiber and exotic core, to build whatever they need.” TFX also works with Volvo’s design group, which is based in Camarillo, to produce concepts that the company then takes back to Sweden to build into future cars. They had a hand in the Acura NSX used in The Avengers. They work with Toyota, Pod, Mini, and others. They’ve built machines and vehicles for a host of major films— and they work with the Department of Defense. Enough said. And they do it all here in high tax, high unemployment, business-unfriendly California. But as Pike explains, “California is a global hub of creativity. This is where the theme park and animation industry started. It’s got huge, advanced aerospace thinking and it’s currently making its mark in terms of architecture.” Pike recently spoke to a group of kids in Ventura who were considering college options. “What they hear a lot is that art school is for losers, that there’s no money to be made. I tell them I think that’s crazy. I grew up in the Midwest, and if I moved back there I could never do what I do here. There’s so much diversity and creativity here. This is the place to be.” v INFO ON TRANSFX: TRANSFX.COM

The Joy of Learning FORWARD-THINKING SENIORS RECLAIM THE CLASSROOM
BY MARK STORER
A
quiet revolution took place in spring of 2012 on the campus of Cal State Channel Islands. A group of senior citizens taking part in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, or OLLI, a nationwide organization for people over 50 who want to continue learning at a collegiate level—without grades or homework—suddenly realized they had more control over their organization than they had thought. Dubbing it the “OLLI Spring,” the group took steps to wrest control of the purse strings and management from university administration, as written in the OLLI bylaws. “The university has been very good to us,” said Jack Phillips, 73, the president of the OLLI steering committee at Cal State Channel Islands. “But
we were told that the program wasn’t making enough money and that there would have to be changes in tuition.” Phillips said a number of the students in the program had backgrounds in accounting and finance, and asked to see the numbers. “It turns out that university accounting and administration is pretty complex; it wasn’t an easy process,” said Phillips. “Bernard Osher was the one who founded this thing, and in the original grant, what he said was that the institute needed to have college or university level courses for people who are 50 or better. They’re to require no homework, no grades or credits. It’s to be for the sheer love of learning. And then he said, ‘How you do it is up to you folks.’”
In the OLLI Spring, the group organized into a cadre of committees including curriculum and professors, marketing and outreach, and finance. They took control and now have a thriving, successful organization dedicated to lifelong learning. “We have wonderful courses,” said Phillips. “You name it, we have it. We just did a course on Nietchze, and we’ve done courses on computer programming and logic. We have courses on the cosmos and on Shakespeare, all kinds of things.” One of the professors in the group has been monitoring the return of flora and fauna to the hills surrounding Cal State Channel Islands since the Camarillo Springs fire. “All of us in the OLLI group were getting email updates, and we love it. It’s fascinating.”

The classroom moves to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a NASA field center and R&D hub in Pasadena. Below: OLLI student Dick Duran photographs a bust at Getty Villa.
Phillips said professors from all over Ventura County come to teach eight-week courses: one day a week for about two hours per class. “We’ve discovered that these professors like teaching us,” he said. “They tell us what they like is a whole classroom full of eager eyes; everyone who comes there wants to be there. There’s not a bunch of students looking at their cell phones or staring out the window.” Phillips said one of his favorite courses so far was on Icelandic Sagas. “These are the very first novels, and this incredible culture is so wonderful—and even funny. But apparently, you don’t tell an Icelander that it’s funny,” he said. “The OSHER program wanted students to run it,” said Jerry Clifford, a professor of chemistry at Cal State Channel Islands who teaches an OLLI

course every year. “They do a great job, and it is the most fun thing I do. The students are motivated and enthusiastic, and they’re doing it for fun. They really are interested in learning.” Clifford said OSHER attracts people who have an inherent curiosity about the world. “The OLLI group has spawned things like book clubs and various gatherings. These folks are engaged, and it’s such a joy.” According to Clifford, one of the best things about OSHER classes is the social aspect. “Whenever we get back together, it’s like watching kindergartners after the summer,” he said. “They’re so excited to see each other. One of the things we always do is have a wine and cheese party. They like to be with each other, and they have a lot in common in their intellectual pursuits and their curiosity.” v
OLLI: THE OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING INSTITUTE Courses are typically offered on the campus of California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo. For those unable to attend day courses or travel to Camarillo, OLLI offers a number of day and evening courses at other venues in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Details online at ext.csuci.edu/community-ed/osher/ or by calling 805.437.2748.

echoes of the past With its quirky character and curated collection of vintage pieces, interior stylist Jamie Kohler’s home celebrates life outside the box. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK

PHOTOGRAPHY BY GASZTON GAL
AMIE KOHLER’S CELLPHONE RINGS IN THE MIDDLE OF OUR interview. The interior designer and owner of Echoes of Opal, an antiques and collectibles shop in Ventura, grabs it immediately. This is not surprising, considering she’s the mother of three, stepmother of another three, and, along with her husband, Billy, has a combined total of 11 grandchildren (number 12 is on the way). The former labor and delivery nurse is also an assistant midwife, so I figured there might be a baby on the way, or perhaps a kid in trouble. “1920s table—free! I kind of like the legs. It needs work. Clean that up, polish the brass feet… Yeah, I’ll take it. It’s a free table,” Kohler squeals, explaining that friends send her tips, knowing of her penchant for collecting cool items that she then repairs or gussies up with a fresh coat of paint, turning sow’s ears into silk purses. The enthusiastic re-purposer with a purpose loves found objects. Nothing escapes her eye, and she chalks it all up to her Grandma Opal,

for whom she named her business: an “open by appointment” shop located off an alley in downtown Ventura. Grandma Opal was a colorful gal who preferred alleys to main thoroughfares. Born and raised a “barefoot beauty” in the hills of Kentucky to moonshining parents, Opal ran off with husband number one of five, a wealthy, hard drinking, educated gentleman from Iowa. They had identical twin sons, one of whom grew up to become Jamie’s dad. By the time Jamie was a little girl, wild Grandma Opal was living in Atascadero on a ranch with a big ol’ barn. The barn was filled to the brim with a child’s delight: old furniture, vintage clothing, and all kinds of doo-dads to scavenge through. “I’d disappear in that barn,” recalled the nonstop talker. “My grandmother was a picker, and she had everything—jewelry, paintings, rugs, clothing. I would sit in that barn and become a princess and arrange a castle. That’s where it began.” Over time, she developed a knack for
“For me, there is nothing less appealing than a room with curtains that match the pillows.” Every piece of furniture, art, and décor in the Kohler home has been repurposed. OPPOSITE: In the dining room, a ’40s-era Art Deco cabinet with geometric motif doubles as a bar. TOP, FROM LEFT: Simple touches lend a relaxing vibe. Kohler calls the boots on the rabbit “a bit of whimsy.” Bone medicine bottles, hand-painted shells and eggs, and etched barbershop glass containers encourage conversation. JANUARY 2014

curating and putting items together in a pleasing manner. Nine years ago, Jamie and Billy bought a 1942 twobedroom, one-bath bungalow and guesthouse located on a tree-lined, meticulously maintained street in midtown Ventura. They fixed up the house and gardens, and Jamie fiddled around with the interiors—five times so far. One year ago, the restless designer redid the living room, dining room, kitchen, and guesthouse. Carefully curated with plenty of whimsy and a great eye for balance and detail, the rooms feature an array of Jamie’s beloved found objects. One’s eye moves curiously around the room, as there is much to investigate. Built-in cabinets have glass bottles and beakers on display. “I like anything scientific,” she says, and apparently anything made of glass, rusty metal, or seashells. There’s even a cello, which Jamie plays, resting in one corner of the cozy living room where recessed lighting has been added. Black bookshelves give an edgy look to the vintage tile fireplace. Collectables range from turquoise Tiki mugs to Billy’s array of vintage 1940s microphones. The bottom shelves are filled with children’s books and toys for the grandchildren. On the mantel, a sand hourglass and magnifying glass, nude sculpture and headless vase with peacock feathers make for a fun array. “Barber bottles: most people would put those in their bathroom. I say they go in the living room,” Jamie announces. Also in the living room, a set of nesting Chinese tables abuts a sofa covered in houndstooth check. A favorite “found” oil painting—of nuns bewildered by a nude painting in an art museum—hangs in the hallway. Jamie confesses she’d be “stoked” if her husband, who works in the oil industry, came home with a rusty old piece of metal rather than a bouquet of flowers. “I love to collect and display cast iron wheels off machines, molds, clamps, hooks, and tools that are being discarded,” she says. “I don’t like perfection—imperfection is perfection.” But that doesn’t mean she can’t create a room with finer objects d’art. All the interior design elements for her clients are taken from what the client already owns. Items are simply reused in new and interesting ways, combined with vintage and antique treasures, repurposed and upcycled one room at a time. She recently posted a note on her Facebook page: “If you could have someone come into your home and redo your room on a budget that you specify, would you do it?” A stranger responded in the affirmative and hired her to redo his wife’s office in Ojai without her knowing.

“We used what he had,” Kohler recalls. “The only thing he told me was to make the room clean, minimalist. His wife had a feather collection and a bottle of sea glass. She likes mermaids. That was all I had to go on.” The office turned out fabulous and the client “went nuts— she loved it!” Jamie's only caveat: a client has to allow the picker plenty of time to locate items, which she sources from estate sales, flea markets, and sometimes even dumpsters. "I believe the environments we occupy powerfully influence our humanness,” she tells me before running off to search for new treasures for Echoes of Opal. “A space filled with wellloved objects, comfortable furniture, personal collections, and stunning color encourage creativity and a sense of peace … Space design is much more than designing for aesthetic appearance; it’s about how we live, and who and what we love. v

ON THE ROAD FROM CAMARILLO TO THE WORLD AT LARGE Darren Alff talks cycling, social anxiety, and the upside of pedaling the planet in low gear. BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER
M
ost people have a satisfying if rather pedestrian existence. Occasional holidays spice up what is, for the most part, pretty standard fare: work, school, family, household chores. But for Darren Alff, adventure is his way of life. In the summer of 2001, at the tender age of 17, the Camarillo native boarded a bus for Portland with nothing but his bike, 300 dollars, and a few essentials, and spent a month pedaling from Oregon to Mexico. He’s had a passion for bicycle touring ever since, and has probably spent more time on the road than off. In the last 12-plus years, Alff has biked across 28 states and more than 50 different countries, carrying the food, gear, and other essentials he needs to live while traveling on two wheels. Between tours, he’s written four books, started two websites (bicycletouringpro. com, gobicycletouring.com) and built his website design business, Silver Mountain Marketing, from his home in Park City, Utah. When we caught up with him, he was fresh off a 14-month trip to South Africa (and a brief jaunt to the Grand Canyon).
TOP: Hill climb near Anysberg Nature Reserve, South Africa. ABOVE: Alff’s typical campsite, this one in a Luxembourg forest. A solar panel strapped to the rear of his bike is used to recharge electronics.

What prompted you to take your first tour? I was 17 and had never left home before. Growing up in Camarillo, I had severe social anxiety. I was so afraid of people. And the idea of going on a bicycle tour by myself and having to interact with other people on a daily basis in order to survive was probably a bigger challenge to me than the cycling. Accomplishing that was really cool. I’ve shared that story on bicycletouringpro.com, and since then I’ve gotten a lot of young people who have been in that same situation: they have social issues or trouble communicating with other people, and they had really never done anything for themselves their entire lives. It’s really cool to hear their stories. Some of these people have taken to the road for the first time and are successfully riding across cities, states, and countries, and realizing they are more capable than they thought. How long do your tours typically last? My shortest one was a month. My longest one, which was last year, was 14 months. I’d say my average is somewhere around three to six months. A lot of people who do these bicycle tours, I’d say their average is closer to a week. Have you met people who have taken to bike touring the way you have? There’s a small community of people who live on their bicycles and travel around the world. Some people do it like me, where I have a home. I go on tour, and then I go home for a little while, and then I tour. Some people are on the road all the time. Most people just do shorter tours, vacation-style tours where they use their two weeks of vacation a year to go to a different state or a different country. There are a whole bunch of different types of bicycle touring. What gave you the idea to start bicycletouringpro.com? In university, instead of getting a summer job like most of my friends, I would ride my bike across the United States. Around 2007, my roommate from college said he wanted to do a bike tour. So I talked to him on the phone for two hours, and I had such a great time teaching him all this stuff I’d learned about bike touring. And I thought if I could teach one person how to do this, it would be awesome if I could create a website and teach 1,000 people—or 10,000 people. Have people been inspired to try bike touring after checking out your websites? Yes! I have a reader who is 50 or 60 years old and she basically became interested in bicycle touring because she wanted to lose weight, and she wanted to do it in a fun way that didn’t require her to go to a gym and be on a strict diet. She went on three long-distance bicycle tours and lost about half her body weight. And now she’s helping other people lose weight. I think that’s really cool. When did you make the jump from domestic tours to international travel? All of my tours during college were in the United States. I got past one barrier: the social anxiety problems. And I think just being comfortable in America and having a general understanding of the country—once I was comfortable here, I thought I’d try somewhere else. My first overseas tour was in Germany. My parents had hosted an exchange student from Germany, and I thought, ‘I know someone in Germany; maybe I’ll go there.’ I think that’s how it got started: I knew one person in the whole country. What are the benefits of bike touring over, say, a tour bus, or backpacking through Europe, or using a Eurail pass? One of the great things is just the physicality of it. When you sit on a bus all day, you’re just viewing the world through a window. On a 34

bicycle you’re really in touch. You can smell the grass you’re riding past, farmers come up and talk to you. If you’re on a bus, you just blow past all that. You’re more in touch with your surroundings. You’re going slower, so you can stop and smell the roses. The physicality thing—it feels good to be in shape and to be able to ride a bike. Riding a bike doesn’t have to be hard. A lot of these tours are really easy; anybody can do them. But the act of riding your bike— it’s that childhood innocence that a lot of people experience no matter what their age. When you get on these bike trails, it feels good to ride. How fast do you travel when you’re on tour? One of the things I’ve learned from my early bike tours, when I always had a timeline because I had to get back to school, was I ended up rushing. I’d ride 60 to 100
miles a day, and fly through areas without really getting to see them or experience them. Now I go a lot slower, between 30 and 60 miles a day on average. I think that’s a much better way to do it. It’s cool to say that you rode 3,000 miles in two months, but I think it’s more rewarding to say, ‘I rode 1,000 miles and had all these experiences.’ What’s something that you think most people don’t know about bike touring? Most people who try a bicycle tour end up enjoying it. But it sounds so scary and sounds like a lot of work at the beginning. It doesn’t have to be. You really can go for just two days, experience what bicycle touring is all about, and get hooked. Just try it. If you know someone who’s done it, talk to them and get their help. Or try a tour that’s an intro to bike touring. It’s a really unique, rewarding experience overall. v

SHORT LIST WHALE WATCHING
Through mid-April | Oxnard coast More than 100 species of marine life live in or migrate through the waters between Oxnard and the Channel Islands, making this one of the best spots in the world for wildlife viewing. Whale watching takes place almost year-round. From the end of December through mid-April, the coastline is rife with gray whales migrating from their breeding grounds in Baja to the nutrient-rich ocean in Alaska. June through October, the channel becomes a superhighway for the blue and humpback whales. Wildlife excursions are available almost daily from businesses located in the Channel Islands Harbor, Oxnard. For more information, see visitoxnard.com.
PAINTINGS BY TONY PRO
Through February 8 | Cal Lutheran University, T.O. An exhibit following the artistic journey of award-winning painter and instructor Tony Pro, of Westlake Village, includes his work from the last decade as well as a few pieces by his late father. Many of the paintings reflect his family life, others make social statements. “Mother’s Love,” a painting of Pro’s wife holding their first baby, received Best of Show at the 2005 Oil Painters of America Show and appeared on the cover of Southwest Art magazine. His painting “They Know No Bounds” is a protest against paparazzi and a statement about their effect on children of celebrities. Kwan Fong Gallery of Art and Culture. Soiland Humanities Center, south side of Memorial Parkway, Thousand Oaks. For more information, visit callutheran.edu.
DAVID LINDLEY
TRUMBO
January 11 | Ojai Playhouse The public is invited to view Trumbo at the Ojai Playhouse as a benefit for Focus on the Masters (FOTM) arts education outreach. The film is based on the play “Trumbo: Red White and Blacklisted,” written by Ojai resident and FOTM documented subject Christopher Trumbo (19402011) and directed by Peter Askin, who also produced and directed the play. Mr. Askin will be on hand to offer insight into the making of the film, which focuses on the life of two-time Academy Award winning writer Dalton Trumbo (1905-1976) and the effects of the blacklist on his friends and family. Trumbo, once the highest paid writer in Hollywood, was one of the 19 Hollywood artists subpoenaed by the House Committee on Un-American Activities in October of 1947. $20 FOTM Members, $25 Non-members, $10 students with ID. 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. 45 E. Ojai Ave., Ojai. For more information, visit focusonthemasters.com.
NATURE VS. NURTURE
January 18 – February 23 | galerie102, Ojai galerie102 will present “Nature vs. Nurture,” featuring paintings by Santa Barbara artist Masha Keating and sculpture by East Coast sculptor Molly Smith. The opening reception with artists will be held on Saturday, January 18, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The exhibit reflects Smith’s and Keating’s interpretation and transformation of objects found in the natural world: a flower becomes a symphony of movement; ordinary twisted rope, wood, and rags dance in space. 102 W. Matilija St., Ojai. For more information, visit galerie102.com or call 805.640.0151.

FOREVER TANGO
January 24 | Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza Forever Tango will feature 14 world-class tango dancers, one vocalist, and an on-stage 11-piece orchestra, including the instrument of the tango, the bandoneon, in an evening that celebrates the passionate music and dance of Argentina. The dances, performed to original and traditional music, are the result of collaboration between each couple and director/creator Bravo. “The tango is a feeling that you dance,” says Bravo, “a story you tell in three minutes. It’s passionate, it’s melancholic. It’s tender, violent.” Tickets available at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza box office in person; at any Ticketmaster retail location; Ticketmaster Charge by Phone at 800.745.3000; or purchase online at ticketmaster.com. For more information, visit civicartsplaza.com.

TWELFTH NIGHT
SHAKESPEARE’S “TWELFTH NIGHT”
January 24 – February 16 | Ojai Art Center Theater Shakespeare scholar and director Michael Addison, the former artistic director of the California Shakespeare Festival, will lead professional and semi-professional actors in one of Shakespeare’s funniest comedies, “Twelfth Night.” Comic confusions are the norm in this story of disguised identities, false letters, spurned lovers, a clown, and a ludicrous duel. For tickets and more information, visit ojaiact.org.
BOB KEMPER
January 11 | Matilija Auditorium, Ojai Multi-instrumentalist David Lindley performs music that redefines the word “eclectic.” Well known for his many years as the featured accompanist with Jackson Browne, and leader of his own band, El Rayo-X, Lindley has long championed the concept of world music. The David Lindley electro-acoustic performance effortlessly combines American folk, blues, and bluegrass traditions with elements from African, Arabic, Asian, Celtic, Malagasy, and Turkish musical sources. Lindley incorporates an array of stringed instruments including but not limited to Kona and Weissenborn Hawaiian lap steel guitar, Turkish saz and chumbus, Middle Eastern oud, and Irish bouzouki. $30 Adults ($35 at the door), $28 Seniors (65+) / Students ($33 at the door). For more information, visit ptgo.org.
International Restaurant Week. Visit visitoxnard.com for an updated list of participating restaurants and dining locations or call 805.385.7545 for more information. Restaurant deals will be posted and available for viewing at facebook.com/oxnardca as they become available. Contact each restaurant individually to make a reservation and inquire about their menus.
“NOISES OFF”
January 29 – February 23 | Rubicon Theatre, Ventura This clever comedy romp will have audiences roaring with laughter. An ingenious play-within-a-play, “Noises Off” follows the onstage and offstage exploits of a company of actors appearing in a dreadful bedroom farce called “Nothing On,” complete with mistaken identities, infidelities, scantily clad ladies, and slamming doors. During the play’s final rehearsal and tour, as the characters make their exits from “Nothing On,” they find themselves in a backstage world that is quickly falling apart. In the end, the two worlds collide into one scandalously silly, fabulously funny nervous breakdown. This play won both the Olivier Award and the Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy. For tickets and more information, visit rubicontheatre.org.
