BRIDGE BUILDERS
G
rowing up, Jackie Pearce belonged to two different worlds. Describing herself as “somewhat biracial,” she lived on Ventura’s Westside, in a neighborhood with a large Latinx population, but spent a lot of time on the much less diverse Eastside. And she contended with others’ misconceptions of her and her community. “I had to learn to bridge those two worlds, and as a result I became friends with a lot of different people,” Pearce recalls in our cover story. Making friends across different swaths of society is an exceptional skill for someone interested in civic engagement. Pearce has spent a lifetime trying to make the Westside a better place, from volunteer work to teaching to grassroots organizing. Now the executive director of the Westside Community Development Corporation, she’s been instrumental in a number of community improvement projects, including the establishment of Kellogg Park, an endeavor that was eight years in the making. This greenspace gem, which just opened on April 14, is a testament to Pearce’s ability to act as a bridge between disparate pieces of a society — residents, business owners, public officials, sponsors and donors — and bring them together for the sake of the community. There’s a lot of bridge building going around this month’s Giving Back issue. MICOP is an organization that serves the Mixteco immigrants of Ventura County, an indigenous group that hales from Mexico’s state of Oaxaca. Many of these individuals work on our local farms, and while they face hardships typical of other immigrant groups, there

are additional issues that arise as a result of language and cultural differences with both English and Spanish speakers. This can lead to profound isolation and an inability to access health care, education and other services. Arcenio Lopez, MICOP’s executive director, explains how the organization is building “a bridge from isolation to inclusion” in an inspiring and informative interview. People with autism and the differently abled face another kind of isolation, navigating a world that is largely driven by verbal communication and neurotypical approaches to just about everything. Reid’s Gift aims to give these individuals the skills needed to pursue education, careers, relationships, independent living and more – in short, allow them to take their place in the world and their communities, while still celebrating who they are, with their unique gifts and perspectives intact. Those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and questioning in Ventura County aren’t necessarily isolated, but they were left somewhat adrift when the Rainbow Alliance closed in 2011. Taking up the torch was Diversity Collective Ventura County, which has bridged the gap in services and been a link between the various LGBTQ+ groups, providing a safe space for education, advocacy, mutual support and community building. Community is vital for human existence, and communities thrive when people can approach each other with open minds, open hearts and open arms to provide acceptance and support, exchange ideas and share the burden of making the world a better place. We’re all in this together. We’re stronger when we work together, too. – Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer nancy@ventanamonthly.com

1 OCTOBERFEST AND HARVEST OF HOPE CALIFORNIA COASTAL HORSE RESCUE The California Coastal Horse Rescue held its annual Octoberfest and Harvest of Hope Celebration on Saturday, Oct. 13. The organization, which aims to rescue abandoned, abused, neglected and slaughter-bound horses, welcomed Ventura County residents and businesses to its Ojai ranch for an afternoon of food, live music and, of course, time with CCHR’s four-footed residents. A beer and wine garden and SoCal Comfort Food Truck were available for guests’ refreshment, while games, crafts and a bounce house kept youngsters busy. In the words of CCHR President Adri Howe, it was “a unique opportunity for CCHR to celebrate the bounty of hope that our friends, donors, and volunteers provide to the horses we rescue and help to heal.” 1. Alexis Vega with Rosie, a miniature horse. 2. Krista Eulberg and Nancy Smeets. 3. Barbara and Tim Kingsbury. 4. Handsome Hanoverian Prinz with rider Maegan Miller.

REID’S GIFT KEEPS ON GIVING Helping disabled individuals thrive through programs that have a lasting impact. BY DAPHNE KHALIDA KILEA | PHOTOS BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN
R
EID BRIAN THOMPSON, 11, passed away in 2007, but his memory is etched in the endeavors of a local nonprofit organization dedicated to serving other youth and adults with developmental disabilities. Thompson, a student with autism, met educator Molly K. Rearick, EdD, CESP (Certified Employment Support Professional), at a school in the San Fernando Valley. She was emboldened by his personality and zest for life. Following Thompson’s death, Rearick felt compelled to “share his spirit” with the organizations where she volunteered and in 2013 she launched Reid’s Gift with the support of his family and other colleagues. The formation of Reid’s Gift was not only a tribute to Thompson but also an effort by Rearick to fill a void by providing for a population she believed was underserved. Its establishment in Ventura County (VC) began with one program
in the afternoons which was staffed by program director Tina Ebsen, MA, LMFT, ATR (registered art therapist), and Thompson’s stepmother (as a volunteer). There were program limitations due to space, but there was demand — and Reid’s Gift was keen to oblige. Per Ebsen, access and inclusion were and still are vital to the organization, and it is willing to grow to accommodate those who want to be a part of it. “Our expectations [in the beginning] were humble and, compared to what we are able to do today, quite small. We have always aimed to support clients and families with what they need, rather than creating supports and then seeking clients. It is overwhelming, in a good way, how large we have grown in such a short amount of time,” Ebsen stated. The Reid’s Gift of today is able to offer services to the developmentally disabled throughout Southern California, from Ventura County to }} Long Beach.

“We have grown from a handful of part-time employees in Ventura County to 50 employees in Ventura, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and Orange Counties. We now serve approximately 150 clients and their families,” said Rearick. Local Reid’s Gift services include Red Rabbit, a collaborative program with the Transitions Support Group and the Conejo Recreation and Park District’s Therapeutic Recreation program. Red is a color associated with Thompson; rabbit is for the Conejo Valley. Red Rabbit offers free educational presentations on topics suggested by people with disabilities and their families. For those interested in joining the workforce, Reid’s Gift offers employment and internship development services. Experienced job coaches provide guidance and support prior to the work day and at the end of the shift, with overall involvement fading as needed. Katherine “Kat” Taylor, 36, of Oxnard participated in the Halloween Store internship. She said that it gave her the stability to improve her business skills and pursue what she described as “once a pipe dream.” “It will be an upscale eBay store at first, selling gently used and refurbished goods. I hope to then have a popup store within my future ventures,” she said of her goal. Kindling Studios is Reid’s Gift’s working art studio, located at Studio Channel Islands in Camarillo. Its staff includes Ebsen, Creative and Entrepreneurial Director Jessieca Driver, and several experienced instructors. There, artists receive art and entrepreneurial training to help them create and sell their work. Taylor, whose pursuits include poetry, weaving and jewelry design, cherishes the freedom of expression art allows her and the satisfaction of completing a piece. She values Reid’s Gift for the opportunities and the sense of community it provides. Similar camaraderie may be found at Reid’s Gift’s summer camp program. This year the camp had about 15 participants in addition to several peer volunteers and interns, an illustration of Reid’s Gift’s efforts to include others in the community — and their willingness to be involved. “The summer program is designed to facilitate meaningful projects in which participants learn and practice different skills so they can access their community in an effort towards interdependence. Along the way, participants engage in reflection, hone communication skills and make connections with peers,” explained Ebsen. Other Ventura County programs include communication support, which pairs support staff with individuals who do not speak or cannot rely on verbal language to communicate; clinical art therapy/mental health counseling; relationships and sexuality education; special education consulting; and the Afternoon Program. The Afternoon Program was Taku Johnson’s introduction to Reid’s Gift and, like Taylor, the 22-year-old Thousand Oaks resident is now at Kindling Studios. While staff members helpfully provided communication assistance for Johnson, this was unambiguous: He really enjoyed some of the activities during the Afternoon Program, and he loves using animals as a subject for his art. }}

“Check. Fun,” said Johnson in response to why he likes Kindling Studios:It’s a source of income, an enjoyable one. He is currently focused on creating art in Photoshop and will participate in December’s Holiday Market at Studio Channel Islands. He also hopes to showcase his work in an upcoming exhibit. Johnson, Taylor and other local clients have access to many programs, but a few haven’t quite made it to Ventura County. “We have been trying for years to bring Tailored Services [TS] to Ventura County and the San Fernando Valley, but have hit a number of funding-related roadblocks. TS is an individualized service wherein our staff help clients attend college, work and volunteer, and engage in other community activities like going to yoga classes, learning to take public transportation, meditating and going on dates,” said Rearick. She speculated that agencies that oversee funding for Ventura County and the San Fernando Valley lack interest in Tailored Services and that the group-based services they opt for fail to meet many individuals’ goals. Elsewhere, Reid’s Gift supports nearly 60 adults through Tailored Services, but Rearick disclosed that it is difficult to offer the service without charging market staff rates and that many families cannot afford to pay out of pocket. According to Rearick, lack of adequate funding is the main obstacle facing Reid’s Gift. Even so, the organization’s endeavors continue apace. Current commitments include presentations at local and national conferences, training other agencies in Communication Support techniques and expanding the training service in other areas, and offering meal planning for self-care. And as always, the organization intends to take its cues directly from the individuals it aims to support. As Rearick says, Reid’s Gift is committed to “continue learning from clients and families about what they need and how we can support individual growth and development.” v

NON-PROFIT SHOWCASE The past year has left a significant void in the lives of thousands of residents in Ventura County and there are many voices asking for support. People continue to be in need due to fires, floods, drought, food insecurity, housing shortages and more. While we live in a beautiful area, many continue to struggle to survive. Once again at this time of year, we ask you to get involved however you see fit, but please act in some way! In the following twenty page section, you will learn more about the outstanding local organizations that need your help with donations and volunteer work. As a wise person once said “A nation’s greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members.” Let us show our compassion by helping our fellow residents in Ventura County.
THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY.
OUR MISSION
To promote and enable philanthropy to improve our community. For Good. For Ever.
Established in 1987, the Ventura County Community Foundation has focused on building philanthropy in our region by stewarding legacies through careful management of the charitable capital entrusted to us. As fiduciaries over this charitable capital, we honor donor intent by protecting endowments forever and we specialize in connecting philanthropic resources with community needs for the benefit of all. We invest in the future through scholarships, grant making, and collaborative partnerships. We are here to support our Ventura County. We provide you with knowledge of community issues, resources to impact social change and strategies to support your values, hopes, and vision for a greater world. Following the Thomas Fire and resulting mud slide last year, our community pulled together and through the collective impact from our donors and nonprofits helped to respond to the urgent need. We worked together to make more than $3 million available to our local nonprofits to assist those affected by the disasters.
Together we can create real and lasting change. Be a part of the solution. Join Your Community Foundation Today.

UNITED UNDER THE RAINBOW Diversity Collective Ventura County gathers LGBTQ+ individuals and programs under one roof. BY CHRIS O’NEAL | PHOTO BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN
S
miling faces lit up Heritage Square in Oxnard on a cool Friday evening in October, when Diversity Collective Ventura County celebrated a year’s worth of service to the LGBTQ community. That the gala happened at all is a feat, considering that not too long ago, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning community was left unorganized and disassociated, looking for leadership and advocacy. That all changed when a like-minded group of individuals came together to provide services and space for the many organizations in need of a home, giving adults and youth alike a voice in Ventura County. In 2011, Rainbow Alliance, which assisted the county’s LGBTQ community, closed its doors, leaving Ventura County’s various LGBTQ individuals, volunteers and organizations without leadership. It was then that a group of individuals stepped in to fill the void, eventually leading to the founding of Diversity Collective. In 2014, the Collective became an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a singular mission: to promote advocacy, education, mental and physical health for the LGBTQ community in Ventura County. The Collective has since reestablished the AIDS Walk, redeveloped the Ventura Pride Festival and created the community service award celebration, the Diversity Gala, all three of which help generate funding for the organization, its community resource center, the HIV and AIDS Education and Prevention Program and the youth program known as Rainbow Umbrella. “[Rainbow Umbrella] went from being just a safe space for LGBTQ to being a peerbased support group facilitated by trained facilitators and doing outreach in schools,” 46

said Audrey Ford, program coordinator. Rainbow Umbrella incorporated in 2014 as a nonprofit, and in 2018, the program became part of Diversity Collective as one program. “When we incorporated, we found that there were about a half dozen LGBTQ organizations that had popped up when Rainbow Alliance closed its doors,” said Joseph Summers, president of Diversity Collective. “The goal was to bring them together under one umbrella.” LGBTQ individuals face obstacles not often addressed by institutions, especially regarding issues surrounding mental health. A 2018 study of LGBTQ youth conducted by Kaiser Permanente Southern California Department of Research & Evaluation found that mental health diagnoses were more common in transgender and gender-nonconforming youth than in those considered cisgender, a term used for those who identify with their gender at birth. For Crystal Star, founder of resource and support group Thrive LGBTQ+, the gap in services for LGBTQ youth hit close to home when seeking therapy for her own 16-year-old child. “The problem that my child was going in for, which was going back to school and having to go back into the closet after having been in this amazing safe space all summer long, was that she has to go back to [school] where there isn’t a [gay-straight alliance] and then go to therapy and the therapists don’t know what to do,” said Star. Star says that her child visited four therapists, most of whom had no experience working with non-binary or transgender youth. They finally found one who did — in Thousand Oaks, a 40-minute drive from home. “Those are some of the access problems we have. Something like Rainbow Umbrella
may be the only space that kids can go and let their guard down, be who they are, dress how they want to dress, and identify with the name they feel that they want to be known as.” For those 21 years of age and older, however, finding continued support proved difficult. In 2017, Star launched Thrive as a program, aimed at adults who have aged out of youth programs, to promote wellness and empowerment, free of politics and substances. She says that Thrive owes a lot to Diversity Collective. “We wouldn’t be able to do that if it weren’t for Joseph and Diversity Collective having this community resource center, giving all of us the space to grow,” said Star. “The way I see Diversity Collective making an impact in the community is broadening people’s understanding of what sexual and

reproductive health means,” said Vicente Torres, HIV and AIDS Education and Prevention program coordinator. “Everybody has basic needs in regard to sexual reproductive health and that’s where people like myself design services and programs that meet their needs.” One such method is known as cultural proficiency training, which looks to educate and promote understanding within institutions that serve the public, such as law enforcement and health services. Another is HOPE (Holding Our Pride and Equality), an LGBTQ-focused counseling center working with Diversity Collective. As the Diversity Collective continues to grow, at its foundation is a new perspective on program funding. Rather than relying on traditional sources such as grants and scholarships, Summers says that primary funding comes from three annual events: the Ventura County Pride
festival, which brings in roughly $55,000; the AIDS Walk, which funds the Collective’s HIV testing and prevention services and brings in $30,000 to $50,000; and the Pride Prom, a fundraiser for the Rainbow Umbrella that brings in $10,000. Independent fundraisers are sometimes held as well. One of these was the reception hosted by the Museum of Ventura County in October (recognized as National AIDS Awareness Month). At the center of the reception was “Bringing the Boys Home,” four squares of quilt panels from the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt sewn by members of the NAMES Project Ventura County in the 1990s. Neil Coffman-Grey, secretary of the Diversity Collective’s HIV and AIDS Education and Prevention Advisory Committee, hosted the event with the Quilt Project Gold Coast.
For all involved with the Collective and its many programs, work can be challenging. Summers, who has 21 years of volunteering for LGBTQ causes under his belt, says there’s a specific reason why he perseveres. “I keep doing it because there’s a need,” said Summers. “I initially did it to be of service, to keep myself on the right track. And now I do it so that others who most need it can be provided with services. I’m raising the voices of my community’s most marginalized, the people of color who identify as LGBTQ and our trans community, our gender non-conforming community, our youth . . . So that’s why I keep doing it: for them.” v DIVERSITY COLLECTIVE VENTURA COUNTY 2471 Portola Road, Suite 100, Ventura 805.644.5428 or www.diversitycollectivevc.org NOVEMBER 2018

COVER STORY
WESTSIDE STORY
KEEP ON TREKKIN’: Jackie Pearce with her ever-present bike at Kellogg Park, a project which she originally proposed in 2010 and which she helped bring to fruition. The park on the corner of Ventura Avenue and Kellogg Street opened on April 14.
Jackie Pearce’s lifetime devotion to community building in and around the Avenue. BY KAREN LINDELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN
A
s a self-described “somewhat biracial” kid, Jackie Pearce developed a simple coping skill: Be friends with everyone. Growing up in the 1970s and ’80s on Ventura’s Westside with a Latina mom and a white dad, she also spent a lot of time in East Ventura playing soccer and other sports with a less diverse crowd, and didn’t feel like she fit in either place. In East Ventura, Pearce said, friends with negative stereotypes of the Avenue were surprised she lived there and feared unnecessarily for her safety. At home, Latina girls who didn’t believe she was part Mexican harassed her. “I had to learn to bridge those two worlds, and as a result I became friends with a lot of different people,” Pearce said. She’s carried that spirit of camaraderie, peacemaking and openmindedness into her chosen profession as a community advocate and
social activist, in the same neighborhood where she grew up and continues to live with her own family. A longtime community volunteer, since 2015 Pearce has served as the executive director of the Westside Community Development Corporation, which works to revitalize the neighborhood, connect community members and develop economic opportunities on Ventura’s Westside. Before joining the WCDC, she was a key figure in advocating for Kellogg Park, the Westside’s newest community outdoor space. The $4.5 million park, at Kellogg Street and Ventura Avenue, opened in April after eight years of planning, fundraising, designing, cajoling, waiting and lots of community building and bonding. The outdoor oasis features walking paths, an amphitheater, picnic tables and a community garden. }}

Ventura City Councilwoman Cheryl Heitmann said she met Pearce during the early days of seeking support for Kellogg Park. “She was unrelenting in her passion and advocacy,” Heitmann said. “Kellogg Park is largely a result of her advocacy and leadership. Jackie is what grassroots advocacy and leadership is all about and I have so much respect for her.” Pearce has been a longtime resident of the Avenue. Her parents moved to Ventura when she was 2, eventually choosing the Avenue “for its humble environment and diversity.” She’s also one of the Westside’s most recognizable residents, both for her civic engagement and her bicycle — the avid biker goes just about everywhere on two wheels, and is often seen pedaling around town. Pearce recalled that her parents were “very generous people” who did what they could to help others, but weren’t particularly active as volunteers. “That was my own initiative; serving the community was just something I wanted to do,” Pearce said. She starting volunteering her senior year in high school as a tutor for Project Understanding, and also worked for Catholic Charities and Friends of Grant Park. A 1990 Ventura High School graduate, she earned a degree in Spanish literature from UCLA, always planning to return to Ventura to teach. “I wasn’t raised speaking Spanish, and wanted to know the language of students I would be working with,” Pearce said. She taught Spanish for three years, and loved interacting with her students — but not so much teaching them. “I attended their sports games, plays and concerts, and liked supporting individual students who were having a hard time, but just didn’t like instructing,” she said. She then got involved in social service through her church, The Bridge, working as a community liaison and with other organizations that served the poor. In 2003, with Pastor Greg Russinger and others from The Bridge, she co-created Laundry Love, a nonprofit that works with laundromats and volunteers to provide laundry services for homeless and low-income people. Pearce is practical about her social-service endeavors, including Laundry Love. “I wanted to create something useful,” she said. “I did a lot of research, and talked to homeless people

about what they really needed.” She said one homeless man told her, “If I had clean clothes, people would treat me like a human being.” Pearce branched beyond volunteering when she took a paid job teaching early childhood education classes for parents in First 5 Ventura County’s Neighborhood for Learning program. Her vision for Kellogg Park was born during those First 5 classes. “Listening to the needs of the parents, it was clear to me that a lot of non-driving mothers had nowhere to take their children for outdoor recreation, exposure and recovery,” Pearce said. “I raised my kids knowing the importance of outdoor play with natural elements, not just plastic and concrete. These families were green-space deprived.” Pearce said she saw the empty space on Kellogg Street and told her husband, Brandon, “We need a park there.” He suggested she share the idea at a Westside Community Council meeting. She did, and
the council asked her to come back. She educated herself about how parks are created and rallied other supporters. “It was a snowball effect,” she said of the support that poured in from all sides — volunteers, government officials, donors, local businesses and agencies like the Trust for Public Land, which provided key funding. Pearce started to cry when asked about the park’s recent grand opening on April 14, eight years after the project was first conceived. “It was like a birth — something beautiful that came out of a love and commitment from the community and all our supporters,” she said. }}

Those supporters included Pearce’s two children, Joaquín, 17, and Marin, 15, who are frequently by her side, helping with whatever project she’s working on. “I always hoped they would view my passion to serve the community and the marginalized, as well as be good stewards of the environment, as a noble mission they would choose for their own lives,” she said. “Both are invested in their wellness, the wellness of others, and the preservation of our outdoor wilderness.” Community is the force that drives Pearce, even in projects that aren’t strictly philanthropic. As her children grew older, Pearce quit working for First 5 and thought about starting a totally new endeavor: a salad delivery business. “It wasn’t just about salad, though,” she said. “It was about connecting with the community, and maybe empowering other women to share their entrepreneurship and creativity.” The idea fizzled out when she encountered all the rules required for food vendors. She then received a call about leading the WCDC, whose director had stepped down. “Community development” is a governmentese term that sounds a little dry, but Pearce lights up talking about it. “We’re dedicated to improving the quality of life for Ventura’s Westside,” she said. “We say we like to connect people, organizations and businesses, and build partnerships with them. How do we get people feeling like they’re a part of something?” The WCDC is funded mainly by a community development block grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Pearce said one goal of the grant program is for people to become homeowners — not an easy task in Ventura’s high-priced real estate market. “One way we address that is to look at income,” Pearce said. “We look for ways to encourage employment, or save money through sustainability. Some people are still watering their yards, but water is so expensive. Little things add up.” She said the organization is “really into motivating our property owners to address blight, to increase patronage so businesses will thrive and maybe add more employees.”

Among the organization’s most successful — and visible — initiatives, she said, is the One Block at a Time beautification project that so far has led to the creation of three community murals, with approval for a fourth granted in October. Pearce views the murals — like Kellogg Park — as more than pretty things. They are also practical, she said, for safety reasons. “If you put up a mural and lighting in an alley, that makes the area more walkable, and people will be less likely to use it as a toilet.” The organization also hosts neighborhood clean-ups, and serves as a resource hub. Pearce is proud of the WCDC’s Idea Hub program, where community members are invited to share ideas to improve the neighborhood, with the WCDC providing tools to execute those ideas. For example, she said, a resident who learned that Goo Gone was an effective graffiti removal tool asked for rags, volunteers and a supply of the liquid cleaner. Shayna Metzner, a WCDC board member, said Pearce has “revitalized the organization” and described her approach to community-building as “tender pollinating work involving so many souls.” Pearce’s future goals include expanding an existing Westside skate bowl into a full community park. She’d also like to make mental health services more accessible, work with Habitat for Humanity to create affordable housing and build a trade school for youth and young adults who are not college-bound. “If you don’t go to college, it’s totally OK; that doesn’t mean you aren’t a member of the community,” she said. Everything the organization does must be done within the community, Pearce said, not from the top down. “My philosophy is, if you do it for me, you do it to me. So let’s do it together.” v THE WESTSIDE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION 110 North Olive Street, Ventura 805.628.3869 or www.westsideventura.org
FIELDS OF GOLD: Kellogg Park boasts brand-new play and exercise equipment, a turf slide, public art and an amphitheater. One of Pearce’s favorite features, however, is the native grass that lines the walking path.

FROM ISOLATION TO INCLUSION A conversation with Arcenio Lopez, Executive Director of the Mixteco/Indígena Community Organizing Project. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK | PHOTO BY MICHAEL MOORE
MICOP,
the Mixteco/ Indígena Community Organizing Project, is dedicated to serving the 20,000 indigenous people from southern Mexico who live and work in Ventura County, often on local farms. Many are Mixtec and Zapotec in origin, and face linguistic and cultural differences, health concerns and other challenges. For 17 years, MICOP has tried to address the needs of this immigrant community, while helping to strengthen its ties to both the indigenous culture and the local community. Executive Director Arcenio Lopez talked to Ventana Monthly about his own path

to community activism, bringing Mixtec values into the nonprofit’s work and building “a bridge from isolation to inclusion.” How did you become a community activist? I am from San Francisco Higos, Oaxaca. I grew up seeing my father for just two months a year — when he came home to visit on breaks from working in California’s agriculture fields. In 2003, when I was 21, I decided to travel to Oxnard to work in the fields. I became aware of the unfair treatment toward farmworkers. I was also treated differently
because I am from Oaxaca. It was the first time that I heard the derogative word “Oaxaquita.” Experiencing unfair working conditions, poor treatment and discrimination gave me the courage to start doing something for my indigenous community. How do Mixtec values merge with MICOP’s work? At MICOP we pride ourselves on the merging of our indigenous practices and Western systems. We frequently think of our approach to nonprofit management as decolonizing the current system. We begin
Tell us about some of MICOP’s programs, and explain a little bit about the promotoras who help with outreach. MICOP serves over 8,000 indigenous immigrants, 90 percent of whom are farmworkers, annually. Our programs include health and community access, community organizing, education, direct assistance and cultural promotion, as well as our community radio station, Radio Indigena. MICOP’s heart and soul is the promotora model that we’ve used since our founding. We reach thousands of individuals with information and workshops on topics such as early childhood education, family wellness and domestic violence. Our promotoras come directly from the community we serve, as we value life experience over formal education. Our promotoras receive in-house training and are our eyes and ears on the ground. They are often our community’s first interaction with our organization. Due to the variations of Mixteco that exist in Ventura County, we rely on our promotoras to navigate and be nimble in their linguistic skills so that our community can understand the information being shared with them. Do you have programs that address nonEnglish and/or non-Spanish speakers? Plaza Comunitaria is our adult literacy program that we offer with the support of the Mexican Consulate. Community members learn to read and write in Spanish and can earn elementary or secondary school diplomas. We’re often asked why we provide this program for Spanish literacy, instead of English literacy. This seemingly simple question touches on the complexities of the intersection between lack of educational opportunities as well as the lived reality of our community members that continue to operate in predominantly Spanish-speaking places in the U.S. We’ve been
interacting with the Spanish language for more than 500 years. Cultural and language barriers are even more exacerbated among indigenous immigrant communities from Mexico than among other Latino immigrants. Many service providers assume that they are meeting community needs by providing services in Spanish for the general Latino population when, in fact, many indigenous immigrants don’t speak Spanish at all. Part of our work is raising awareness about indigenous communities to these providers. How else do you help children and families? Our PUENTES Program hosted 35 informative and educational workshops on parenting and family wellness. Our Tequio Youth Group develops leadership skills of indigenous Mexican youth to promote indigenous pride, encourage academic achievement, and advocate against bullying. . . . The group meets weekly and has worked on issues including pesticide awareness, reproductive justice and health advocacy. MICOP also offers the Tequio Scholarship. This year we awarded more than 29 scholarships ranging from $250 to $2,500 for youth headed to universities and community colleges. Community activism is an important component. How does MICOP teach people how to lead and organize? Organizing indigenous community members to uphold the rights of indigenous people and farmworkers is another core tenet of MICOP’s work. We use the house-meeting model that was also used by César Chávez, where we bring our message directly to our community in their homes. Do you have other approaches to community outreach? We are really proud about our radio station, Radio Indigena. It took us over four years to get KIND-LP 94.1 FM started as a low-power FM station that can also be streamed online or listened to via app. This was important because we wanted to be able to reach other indigenous communities outside of the immediate Oxnard area. Our radio station is 100 percent community-run by our indigenous leaders. They have been trained to be citizen journalists and provide programming in Mixteco, Zapoteco, Purepecha, Spanish and English. Voz de la Mujer Indigena . . . provides
a unique opportunity to discuss the issues of domestic violence in an accessible, yet discreet manner for our community. Voz also uses the promotora model for community outreach, person to person, in order to build the trust needed to have difficult conversations around taboo issues like domestic violence. Voz further engages indigenous survivors of domestic violence with art workshops and a safe-space support group for our women. What are some of the challenges serving this community? The breadth and depth of community needs, the migratory nature of farm work and current national narratives impacting community trust. Most urgent concerns include immigration issues, public [assistance] (SNAP and medical), workplace violations and housing.
CONVERSATION
each meeting with conocimiento, or a check-in question. We prioritize conocimiento as a way to ground ourselves and to share space with one another before diving into a meeting. It also puts everyone on an equal level, without titles, etc. . . . We also view MICOP as a vehicle for professional development for our indigenous immigrant community. Over 80 percent of our staff are indigenous, and many are former farmworkers who are given the opportunity to grow and learn professional skills within a nonprofit setting that will help expand their future job opportunities.
How can people help? We predict 20 percent to 30 percent organizational growth for the next five years. Facilities continue to be one of the biggest needs for our organization. We also need more resources. While we have been growing, we also have additional goals of having full legal immigration, mental health and cultural preservation programs that all indigenous immigrants in the community can access. Of course, we welcome donations, but also would like to invite the community to spend some time with the organization, the youth that are so incredibly accomplished and engaged. You will feel inspired by the resilience of our community! What are you most proud of? I am thankful for partnerships we have built, and look forward to growing our network of supporters. I am proud to be part of an indigenous immigrant movement in Ventura County and ensuring that our voices are heard. We still have a long way to go to ensure equity and justice for our community, but I am proud to say that due to our efforts, we see happy and proud trilingual children speaking their indigenous language, Spanish and English. Our families have language access. We are a bridge from isolation to inclusion. v MIXTECO/INDÍGENA COMMUNITY ORGANIZING PROJECT (MICOP) 520 West Fifth Street, Oxnard 805-483-1166 mixteco.org

THE WALL: BOUNDARIES BETWEEN AND WITHIN US Through Jan. 2019 | Santa Paula
Twenty-three artists have been selected for an exhibition in which the subject is interpreted in several unique ways: the walls depicted are physical, historical, social, cultural, political, personal and more. In addition to the walls themselves, the artworks call into question our relationships to them — are we builders or destroyers? Are we inside or outside? Confined or liberated? The show will invite you to consider and confront the walls that shape us individually and collectively as we explore the nature of walls and boundaries. Regular admission: $3-4. Santa Paula Art Museum, 117 N. 10th St., Santa Paula. For more information, visit www. santapaulaartmuseum.org.
