Wendy and Eric Gillett
BEYOND THE PHYSICAL
I
t’s hard to overstate how much rowing crew affected Wendy Gillett’s life. She met her husband, Eric, when she joined her college rowing team, for one thing. It also became a career, as she has been a professional coach for decades. It even brought her to Ventura County: The mystique of Lake Casitas and its association with the 1984 Olympics was the deciding factor when the couple decided to relocate from Orange County. For love of the sport, they started Casitas Rowing, and since 2008 have been bringing people of all ages, abilities and walks of life together to partake in the unique joys of what Gillett refers to as “the ultimate team sport.” The story behind Casitas Rowing demonstrates how our physical activities can enhance everything around us: our relationships with others, our motivations and interests, where we live. Professional surfer Mary Osborne has built a life beyond the surfboard, while remaining connected to her element. As a surf ambassador for Patagonia, and as a representative for numerous environmental initiatives, including the United Nations Environmental Safe Campaign, she has tirelessly worked to protect and cleanup the ocean environment. She’s also an advocate

for women in sports, and a role model to the many young women who participate in her surf camps, where selfconfidence and healthy living are as important as catching a wave. Pat and Cat Patterson love bicycling. So much, in fact, that in 2002, they grabbed life by the handlebars and pedaled off on a four-year tour of the world. Ten years since their return, the two adventurers — now 77 and 63 years young, respectively — haven’t slowed down much: Long-distance biking and travel continue to be a part of their fitness regimen. They’ve made friends all over the world (many of whom still keep in touch), weathered the inevitable frailties of age with enviable resilience, and even wrote a book about their remarkable journey. In good shape? Definitely. But the fearlessness with which the Pattersons just “get out there” is the true testament to their mental and physical fitness. We are told ad nauseam that being active is necessary for good health. But how much better it is when we can exercise more than just our muscles! When mind, body and spirit are in synch, all aspects of our lives enjoy the benefits. And that, I think, is both the key to and point of a healthy lifestyle. – Nancy D. STILL GOING STRONG The continuing adventures of a high-powered couple show the benefits of active aging.
A
BY KAREN LINDELL
fter cycling for 23,000 miles over four years in 57 countries, the hardest part of returning home for one couple was learning to walk again. Pat and Catherine (Cat) Patterson of Ventura, who rode their bikes through the U.S., Canada, Europe, Africa and South and Central America from 2002 to 2006 (and were the subject of a Ventana Monthly story in 2008), didn’t cycle around town upon coming home because they weren’t used to the car traffic. So they tried walking instead. “It was really hard on our knees,” Pat said. “After being on a bike for so long, we were using very different muscles.” Overall, however, the physical and mental muscles they built during their biking adventures have been positive for their health. Pat, now 77, and Cat, 63, each recently had major surgery (for internal problems unrelated to biking). The couple believe they are recovering quickly because they are still in excellent posttour shape — more than a decade later. “I atrophied so much after surgery; imagine if I hadn’t had the muscle mass,” Pat said. “They told me I would be in the hospital for 10 days; I was out in five,” Cat said. The strength they built up during four years on bikes no doubt contributed to their enduring health and vitality. Their current commitment to physical activity, however, has also kept them in such exceptional shape. The couple said they work out at a gym three days a week, including a stationary bike for Pat, and yoga, Pilates and swimming for Cat. The other four days they’re back on their bikes. Before their surgeries, the Pattersons rode

up the coast from their home in Pierpont to Carpinteria or Ojai, about 35 miles round trip. They’re taking it a little easier now, having shortened those bike trips to a mere 20 miles. Surgery or not, these models of fitness continue to get more exercise than folks a fraction of their age. Preparing for their big trip in 2002 created some healthy habits that have been hard to break. To train for their around-the-world tour, Cat said, the couple cycled three to four days a week carrying all their gear. They each lugged about 80 pounds, including clothes, a tent and cooking supplies. “But we didn’t do anything major as far as training,” Cat said. “The training was just being on the road.” During their trip the Pattersons spent nine months traveling through 17 countries in Africa. They’ve recently relived that experience, and exercised some intellectual muscles, too, by writing about it in their newly self-published book, The African Dream (Bicycling Beyond Boundaries), available at Amazon.com. In Africa, Pat said, they usually rode for five days straight, 50 to 60 miles per day, then took days off to sightsee. “It’s a slow way to travel, but the best way,” he said. “You see things you just can’t see any other way.” “It was just our life, what we were doing every day, so we took our time,” Cat said. “Ride, rest, have lunch. Ride, shower, eat dinner, go to bed.” An excellent recipe for long-term health, it would seem. There were challenges, of course. Cat, a vegetarian, said the limited diet did not serve her well on the bicycling tour. “We were burning at least 4,000 to 5,000 cal-
ories a day; I realized I needed a lot more protein and calories,” she said. “That was one of the best things though — with all the exercise, we could eat whatever we wanted.” Another issue cropped up relatively quickly on the first leg of their trip. Biking across the U.S., Cat said she collapsed from dehydration in Salt Lake City and had to go into the hospital. According to Dr. Eric G. Sletten of Ventura, this isn’t uncommon for long-distance bikers. Sletten is the head team physician at California State University, Northridge, and director of the Sletten Wellness Medical Center in Ventura. He’s also certified in sports medicine and knowledgeable about the health risks inherent in bicycling: he has ridden through Europe, Laos and Vietnam. “Medically, the biggest risk for all bicyclists,
PROFILE ROLLING ALONG: Cat and Pat Patterson pose for photos at Ventura Pier during one of their many 20-mile rides from their home in Pierpont..
but especially people who are older, is dehydration and heat illness,” Sletten said. “As you get older, you’re much less efficient in thermal regulation, so hydration is the biggest trick.” Sletten said the other big health risk is bicycles vs. cars. “Bicycling is 80 percent skill and 20 percent space. It’s important for a biker to know what a car wants to do.” The Pattersons didn’t let the initial dehydration incident — or traffic — stop them. They rolled on despite injuries, sleet, sweltering heat, steep hills, road blocks, flat tires, Deetsoaked sheets, creek crossings, jungle fires, pickpockets, pirates, fears of typhoid disease — even swarming termites. But they also saw baboons, elephants and other wild creatures, feasted on bread spread with argan-nut butter and honey, made friends from
around the world and discovered how kind and helpful people are toward strangers from another country. They reciprocated the hospitality. “Our greatest weapon was our smiles,” Pat said. As the three-year planned trip turned into four years, and funds started running low, the Pattersons chose to continue the adventure rather than return home. “We decided to sell the house,” Pat recalled. It’s a decision they’ve never regretted. The memories of that first tour will always be with them. And judging by how well they have weathered the inevitable health issues that crop up with advancing age, the physical stamina and strength they developed from their travels — and their commitment to good health since their return — has stayed with them as well.
Today, “We’re a little softer on travel because of age,” Pat said. Any future bike trips they take will likely be combined with a car. But make no mistake: The Pattersons are definitely letting the good times continue to roll. In fact, the adventurous couple took off in May for a month touring around Paris, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria and the Czech Republic. Pat said he calls their four-year adventure “reality TV without the TV. We didn’t have sound and lighting crews, or a helicopter to fly us out. Every day was like a mystery. All we had to do to solve it was to get on board and pedal.” v Follow the Pattersons’ past and present bike adventures at www.worldriders2.com.

ABOUT TOWN
POWER STROKE: Members of the adult men’s master team test their mettle against the paddle. Photo by Hope Wilkinson.
ALL TOGETHER NOW Teamwork, crew and community propel Casitas Rowing. BY MARK STORER THE THRILL OF VICTORY AND THE AGONY OF DEFEAT visited Lake Casitas in 1984. But the resounding echoes traveled down through the years when the women’s 8 rowing team earned the gold on this otherwise quiet fishing and recreation reservoir, home to campers, boaters, anglers and, of course, crew. Casitas is the stuff of legend, too. Featured in a book called Assault on Lake Casitas, Brad Alan Lewis wrote about his overcoming extraordinary odds not just to win a gold medal 1984, but to challenge the Olympic system through innovative techniques he developed himself. It is these bits of history on the water just above Ventura that called to Eric and Wendy Gillett, founders and coaches of the Lake Casitas Rowing Association whose members, varied in their abilities, work together to learn a specific skill set that builds muscles, health, character and, on occasion, obsession. “Rowing is really an interesting combo,” said Wendy Gillett. “It’s the ultimate team sport where you have to pull your weight to make the team better. At the same time, you also have to be there in your seat doing your thing, asking yourself what you can do to make yourself better.” The Gilletts met at Orange Coast College where Eric was on the
rowing team when Wendy joined as a coxswain (the person at the front of the boat who calls out rhythm and pacing and keeps time). “I knew I was going to marry him the day I met him,” said Wendy. They’ve been together ever since. “It was one month into my freshman year and on our third date, he proposed,” said Wendy. “When you know, you know. He said he wanted to coach rowing when he grew up and I said I wanted to work with kids.” The Gilletts made a decision that they would dedicate their lives to giving back to the sport that had given them so much: introducing them to each other, providing them with a shared passion, and even earning Eric a number of championships and medals. “We were living in Orange County and we knew it was too expensive to stay there,” said Wendy. “So we drove up the coast and we were driving through Ventura and had to stop for gas.” As they filled up the car, they pored over a map and Eric realized that Lake Casitas was just up nearby Highway 33. “He shouted, ‘I read that book! Assault on Lake Casitas,’ and got so excited,” she recalled. In other words, they knew. They settled into Ventura to live what Wendy calls “a beach lifestyle,” and followed the call to create their own assault on the lake. The Lake Casitas Rowing Association began in 2008 with nine

members: six children and three adults. “It began to snowball so fast,” said Wendy, “that in two or three years, both of us stopped working. We couldn’t keep up.” Now, this “little tiny thing that we wanted to start” has become a 160-member, full-time vocation. “It’s the community that did this,” Wendy said. “People want to do this and they want to give back and share with others.” One quarter of the students who row are on scholarship at Casitas Rowing. The annual cost for a school year of rowing competition, including travel, transportation, race fees, etc., is around $3,400. Summer camps run around $150 a week for kids; adults can try a month of rowing for around $50. Krysten Menks, 23, who now lives in Massachusetts and is working on a graduate degree, started rowing when she was a 14-year-old freshman at Ventura High School. “I was going to be on my high school basketball team,” said Menks. “But I had to leave for a summer when they were doing training before school started.” Menks said she was kicked off the team. During a club exposition at school, Casitas Rowing had a booth and Menks met the Gilletts. “I went home and told my dad I was going to try it and he asked, ‘What’s rowing?’ ” But Menks said he dutifully took her to Lake Casitas that weekend and she took her first class. “I was horrible at it, but I loved it. I knew I was in the right place,” she said. “There’s something about rowing where you’re working together,” said Menks. “Everyone has to work together. I know it sounds corny, but it really is the ultimate team sport. There’s no one star on the team.” But the team allows for competitors to show their stuff, too. Menks was picked up on a full-ride scholarship to crew for University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She was injured in her freshman year and red-shirted, but the university allowed her a hardship waiver and she continued on for a total of five years at UMass. “The whole team was just so welcoming here,” said Menks from her home in Massachusetts, where she recently married her partner of several years. “It was easier to make the transition knowing I had this group of people that was so great to me.” Menks earned two bachelor’s degrees, one in kinesiology and one in psychology. Menks said that the Gilletts functioned as a second set of parents for her as she rowed her way through her high school years and on into a col-
lege scholarship. “It was just me and my dad, so Eric would pick me up and take me to practice, and Wendy was always there to talk to and really gave me so much. I could never repay them for it all,” she said. “I never imagined I could be where I was without Eric or Wendy or the master rowers that were there for me. They kept me on task, helped me reach higher goals.” Don Tanhauser, 82, of Moorpark and a prostate-cancer survivor, started rowing at the age of 75. “I grew up in Wisconsin and rowed in a rowboat out on the lakes, did a lot of fishing,” he said. “So rowing brought back memories for me.” Tanhauser said that when he started, he wasn’t nearly as physically active as he knew he needed to be. “I had a hurt back. I couldn’t lay flat on a bed or on the floor. I started rowing and my back got a lot better,” he said. He also lost 35 pounds and lowered his cholesterol level. He makes the trek from Moorpark up Highway 33 fairly regularly now. “I row three times a week, sometimes more.” Tanhauser likes to row as a single, in what’s called sculling. “I can’t blame anyone else that way,” he said. “I like team rowing, too, though.” But it’s the singles where he has really shined. Tanhauser began stacking up medals and awards for fastest times both with teams and as a single. He started using indoor rowing machines, called “ergs,” short for ergometer, and the Gilletts encouraged him to compete within the indoor rowing championship tournaments. “Three years ago, I competed in Long Beach and beat the qualifying time, eight minutes, 30 seconds, so I went to the championships in Boston and I won there.” In fact, Tanhauser has won first place for the last three years running in Boston. “1,300 athletes show up in the morning and there were 43 of us who beat the qualifying time,” he said. The list of stories goes on in many directions. The Gilletts didn’t just pursue a passion: They built a community around a love of rowing and invited everyone from all walks of life to join the team. “We wanted to start a nonprofit because we wanted to give back,” said Wendy. “We didn’t want it to be the Eric and Wendy Show. We wanted to create something that would last and be something that would continue after we’re gone.” With rowers on the water seven days a week, from middle-schoolers to octogenarians, surely there is room for more legends at Lake Casitas. v Casitas Rowing 805.642.2288 www.casitasrowing.org

FLUID DYNAMICS Pro surfer Mary Osborne goes above and beyond the board.
BY AMELIA FLEETWOOD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN
‘‘I
fell in love with surfing the second I caught my first wave,” said 35-year-old professional surfer and long board champion Mary Osborne. “I always thought that I would end up on a tropical island, but I’m still here!” she laughed. The indomitable powerhouse finds amusement in being born and bred and still living in her beloved Ventura. Osborne literally grew up in the water, living at Solimar Beach with her parents and three older brothers, all of them phenomenal surfers. Osborne, quite naturally, followed them into the ocean. She remembered the moment her path became clear, when she saw the powerful image of a woman on a surfboard in a magazine. Osborne was so inspired by that image, she made it her goal to be just like the woman in the magazine. Osborne began winning local competitions up and down the coast of California, and by the time she was 17 she was competing internationally, making a name for herself. Osborne credits her sponsor, Patagonia, with setting her apart from the mainstream surfers. “Patagonia was a huge influence on me. It helped shape me from my early teens,” she said. Patagonia’s environmental ethos schooled her in the importance of ecological awareness, the necessity of caring about our oceans and our food supply. Now Osborne aligns herself only with companies that share her philosophy. “During the time I was coming up in the sport there weren’t many females,” Osborne said. “I was competing primarily against boys and doing well, and winning.” Still, she does not consider herself a trailblazer. From her perspective, it was the women surfers in the generation before hers that broke into the male-dominated sport, paving the way. Not content to be the typical pro surfer who got paid to surf, and then go home, Osborne took her career outside of the box, throwing herself into everything from hosting TV shows and travel documentaries, to writing, being an environmentalist and becoming an advocate for women in sports. She has been }}

been ambassador to the United Nations Environmental Safe Campaign, worked with the 5 Gyres Institute and Project Save Our Surf, and acted as “surf ambassador” for Patagonia. In 2010, Osborne became the first woman to ride China’s Qiantang River tidal bore, the world’s largest and fastest bore, a roaring river-wave with recorded heights nearing 30 feet. She followed that up by riding the bore again in each of the subsequent four years. Osborne may be a very accomplished surfer, but it is her buoyant energy and her motto, “Live, love, inspire,” that drives her work. She heads her own company, “Mary Osborne Surf,” where she teaches surfing to kids, teen girls and women of all ages. She also hosts local surf camps and international escapes, and specializes in custom event planning. “The first kids camp began by happy accident,” Osborne said. “People asked me to teach their kids when I was in town, and it quickly snowballed. I now teach about 30 children a week, for 10 weeks every summer.” Osborne never stops. “I have a crazy amount of energy because I really enjoy what I do. Being outdoors and active just keeps me going.” Having gone through certain difficulties in her own life, it has become Osborne’s passion to help women of all ages to actualize their potential. She takes special pride in her camp’s Teen Overnight Surfari — for girls ages 12 through 15 — a personal favorite. “I love teenage girls. It’s such a crazy age, and these days, with the added pressures brought on by the presence of the media, it’s even more important to instill a sense of empowerment in these young women.” Osborne created a seven-day trip

that combines a surf camp with key speakers, such as professional athletes and life coaches, who teach self-confidence and the basics of healthy living. “I have seen the teens completely transform and learn so much by the end of the week! We visit local businesses for education (Patagonia, Betty Belts, Channel Islands Surf Shops), we go on Island Packers educational day trips, go horseback riding in Ojai, and visit local farms to learn about produce. It’s a lot packed into one week.” A multitasker with a seemingly endless supply of energy, Osborn also designs custom Weekend Women Surf Clinics for all levels of expertise, targeting women between the ages of 40 and 60 who want to try something new, complete with wine tasting, yoga and great food. “I notice that women often hold on to a lot more fears than men do,” Osborne said. “I spend a lot of time with each person before we get out in the ocean. Many have some past fear of the water. But once they catch a wave and stand, it’s incredible! A person can carry that wherever they go. “When learning to surf, people are not just dealing with Mother Nature, but also with the rigorous physical and mental challenges that come up,” Osborne shared. “It’s not just about learning to surf; it’s much more therapeutic. It’s really about figuring out what your fears are and approaching them, and getting that confidence out in the water. It can be scary for people. I tell everyone, ‘This is your hour, this is your day! Make it what you want.” v Learn more about Mary Osborne, including her classes and trips, at maryosbornesurf.com, or call 805.973.7263.

TRAVEL
STATE OF BLISS Luxurious healing in the Yucatán retreat of Chablé. BY LESLIE A WESTBROOK
I
A WARM WELCOME I began my journey with three nights in the fascinating city of Mérida. A friend and I were collected in Mérida and whisked about a 40-minute drive away to Chablé. Warmly welcomed by the staff and congenial General Manager Rocco Bova to the jaw-dropping historic hacienda grounds, we mentioned that we were starved, and thrilled to enjoy the first of many delicious meals: A Yucatán dish called papadzules, egg-

t’s my first morning at the recently opened Chablé Resort and Spa, set on 750 acres in the heart of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. I awaken in my glass-walled villa to views of the Mayan jungle and the sounds of birdsong. I program Antonio Carlos Jobim on the room’s iPad and slide open the pocket doors to reveal the morning light and alluring azure pool, presided over by an equally inviting hammock. Jose delivers a bowl of fruit the color of jewels, a carafe of herbal tea (there’s also Veracruz coffee from Café Cobalto) and a flaky croissant for my early-morning start to the day. Life is grand in one of the most interesting parts of Mexico. And at Chablé, a fantastic healing voyage also awaits.
SWEAT IT OUT: Rituals that take place in Chablé’s temazcal, or Mayan sweat lodge, are designed to purify physically and spiritually.

filled tortillas with a pumpkin seed and tomato sauce, prepared over a traditional wood-burning stove in one of the four kitchens on the property. After lunch, I was escorted in a golf cart to my amazing villa, Chi’it (Mayan for a type of thatched palm). Each villa is named in Mayan for a different plant, animal, tree or god. I immediately jumped in my plunge pool (yes, each villa has its own pool) which I would revisit daily. I fell into a deep slumber for an afternoon siesta before my friend Jose appeared at my door, rousing me out of my dreams, for cocktails on the portico of the main building, La Terraza. Rudy, the terrific bartender, prepared a thirst-quenching mango/rosemary/tequila cocktail for me while Jose and Rocco sipped tequila and mezcal. A light dinner of a satisfying traditional turkey soup (turkey is a mainstay in Yucatán cooking) followed, and then I was off to a much-appreciated solid night’s sleep. SPA, CENOTE AND MAYAN MYSTICISM Zen meditation and a visit to the spa seemed in order for the first full day of my Chablé retreat. I had a wonderful one-on-one meditation session with Alex, an ex-pat raising a young family in Mérida. Our space overlooked a beautiful, mystical cenote. A cenote is a sinkhole caused by the collapse of bedrock, revealing a pristine underground pool. These dot the landscape throughout the Yucatán and were important in Mayan rituals. My spa experience began with a light spa lunch, followed by dips in a series of hydrotherapy pools, with the assistance of Emiliano, my “spa butler,” who spoiled me rotten, seeing to all my needs, including delivering a cold washcloth and rose-water spray to me while in the sauna, folding my robe as I soaked in the hydrotherapy pools, and placing a pitcher of chilled herbal-infused water by my lounge chair. My massage therapist, Israel, recommended a Mayan herbal compress massage, which promised not only physical well-being, but improved energy and a calming effect on the mind. First I entered a conch shell-shaped structure, where my therapist performed a cleansing ritual that included burning herbs and chanted prayers, accompanied by soft whistles in the distance and the call of a conch shell. The blissful, 90-minute massage (one of many unique offerings on the spa menu) incorporated Mayan rituals, plants and herbs from the gardens, and mystical healing stones. GASTRONOMIC DELIGHTS Dinner at the signature restaurant Ixi’im (Mayan for corn) was a delightful, delicious evening. Jose and I shared the tasting menu. The Quelite salad featured quintonil (a small, tender leafy green in the amaranth family), cilantro, parsley and dressing made from their stems. The meal also included roasted tomatoes and “sopero” cheese from Tabasco; deer tartare (a bit gamey for my taste) with a recado rojo vinaigrette made from typical Yucatán ingredients of sour orange, chili habanero and pumpkin seed; creamy rice with stone crab, local squash and x’catic chile; Michoacán trout with chamomile foam and manzano chile; and duck magret with my favorite Mexican delicacy, huitlacoche mole. Mexico City celebrity chef Jorge Vallejo oversees the menu, but delightful and talented onsite chef Luis Ronzon, a star in his }}

DESIGN EXTRAORDINAIRE Chablé’s gardens are amazing. The daily Mayan flute serenade to the herbs magically coaxes the plants into verdant and healthy bloom; I harvested a fresh beet and had it added to my fresh-squeezed breakfast juice. Strolling through the property, the boom years of henequen cultivation (an agave plant used for sisal) during the late 19th and early 20th centuries could easily be imagined. From a design point of view, the effects are equally stunning, thanks to architect Jorge Borja and noted Mexican interior designer Paulina Moran. The duo just received the prestigious Prix Versailles 2017 Prize — promoted by the International Union of Architects in conjunction with UNESCO — giving Chablé Resort the distinction of being the top hotel in the world for architecture and design. Each private villa is an oasis of comfort and calm, beautifully decorated with natural fabrics and woods. Ceramic bathroom sinks made in Mexico City sit atop wooden countertops. Double-sided glass showers feature overhead rainfall shower fixtures. One set of doors leads to an outdoor shower. Comfy beds are fringed by linen sheers that can be drawn to envelope the bed. Rooms come equipped with iPads and Sky TV as well — but who cares about the woes of the world when the birds and staff are happy to make your day! Chablé is a retreat muy especial for friends and lovers (you can tie the knot or have a Mayan recommitment ceremony), but families are also welcome. Its location is perfect for exploring 19th-century hacienda history and Mayan culture. The archeological ruins of Chichen Itza and Uxmal are each about an hour away, and the archeological museum in nearby Mérida is worth a side trip. There are 33 (soon to be 40) stunning villas at Chablé, which just opened in early 2017. Special events — wine dinners and visiting-chef weekends, concerts on the green — are in the making, thanks to the engaged and enthusiastic GM. Chablé is a splurge that is worth every peso, and then some. v

own right, oversees day-to-day preparations. Every meal, from fresh-squeezed juices, avocado toast and chilaquiles for breakfast to the gastronomic displays for dinner, was superb.
MAYAN MODERNISM: Whether you seek recreation, meditation or rejuvenation, Chablé is the ideal wellness destination. A bike ride around the grounds, hot-stone massage near the natural cenote, or dip in the pool (check out the large communal lounge area when you’re feeling social) are all wonderful ways to take in the resort’s unique blend of Mayan culture and modern-day luxury.
