HOUSES WITH HISTORY
ach Bancroft loves reclaimed wood. The founder of 805 Woodworks values the quality (older wood is often milled from very old trees, which yield more durable, rot-resistant lumber), digs the history behind it, appreciates the unique shape and structure of each piece. That latter quality can pose challenges during construction, to be sure, but Bancroft enjoys the problemsolving process, too . . . which only adds to his fondness for his materials and the items he crafts from them. Old houses, like old wood, can instill a similar regard. They echo with their past — architecture, décor, the spirit of previous owners — and are, in part, symbols of resilience, the ability to withstand the ravages of time. The homes featured in this month’s issue all have a history, which has made them beloved by their owners. Hawk and Molly Koch, the subjects of our cover story, live in a relatively newer home, but have filled it with emblems of a particularly rich past. Hawk is both a film producer and the son of one, and a former president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, with dozens of movie credits and decades in the industry under his belt. Molly is the daughter of a television actress, and the granddaughter of radio show legends. The home they share in Rancho Matilija has something from Hollywood in nearly every room . . . and serves as a reminder of Ojai’s own past (and present) as a getaway for the film industry’s rich and famous.

SEPTEMBER 2018
In Hobson Heights there is a large estate — a nearly 3,900-square-foot house on close to 19,000 square feet of land — that in its 1938 heyday was a gorgeous, Spanish-style grande dame. The years were not kind to her, however, as she fell victim to disrepair and incomplete expansions that tarnished her original beauty. Now in the hands of a committed restoration expert, she has been buffed and polished to her original splendor, and this former “diamond in the rough” shines once again. A 1918 Craftsman in Oxnard may not have the size or star power of these other homes. But it’s a beautiful example of its architectural style, which its owner, Nancy Switzler, has honored throughout her careful and thoughtful restoration and expansion. She has allowed the house itself to dictate the direction of her efforts, paying attention to the clues that have been gradually revealed — from a bit of torn wallpaper here or a lifted carpet there — to bring elements of her home’s past into harmony with its present. Modern life, at times, feels like a constant balancing act, as the present becomes the future at an ever-faster rate. But links to the past — a treasured photo, a vintage doorknob, a lovingly restored architectural gem — can anchor and sustain us, and provide a solid foundation on which to stand. They remind us that despite the passage of time and the changes that accompany it, much endures . . . and give hope that we will, too. – Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer nancy@ventanamonthly.com

In conjunction with the city of Oxnard, the Oxnard Performing Arts and Convention Center (PACC) held a preview party for a new regional film festival on Aug. 16. The upcoming festival, Sight + Sound, will take place in August 2019, but festival organizers and committee members — including Luis Güereca (founder of the Oxnard Film Festival), Carolyn Mullin (PACC event coordinator), Anitra Lawson (film professor at Oxnard College) and
Arcelia Martinez (CAPS Media) — gave the community a sneak peek with a sizzle reel, and offered information on the festival’s scope, available resources and the submission process for artists interested in participating. COVER STORY
ELEGANT EASE Hollywood transplants enjoy refined country living in Rancho Matilija. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK | PHOTOGRAPY BY MICHAEL MONTANO
Stately homes, many with red-tile roofs and gracious front lawns, face shady lanes in a lush landscape dotted with California live oak, sycamore and palm trees in Ojai’s Rancho Matilija. It’s a gracious, gated community, dotted with country estate homes. Longtime Hollywood movie producer Howard “Hawk” Koch and his lovely wife, Molly Jordan, who planted their own roots here just three years ago, are equally gracious. This November, the couple will be opening their home for the Ojai Music Festival’s 22nd Annual Holiday Home Tour and Marketplace. Their passion to help ensure that music is taught in Ojai schools through the festival’s Bravo program was the impetus and inspiration for their participation. “We’re big proponents of supporting creativity,” Molly noted. Probably because it’s in their blood. On a different musical note, Hawk spoke enthusiastically of his love of the film scoring process — just one of many aspects of putting a movie together as a producer. “A movie is dry until the music comes in. When you finally get to hear the score and are on the scoring stage, with 150 of the best musicians in Los Angeles or in Budapest or London, and listening on giant speakers while watching a great composer — and finally get to hear it — it brings the film to life exponentially.” }}
LUSH LUXURY: With red tiled roof, expansive front lawn and verdant landscaping, this West Ojai estate is the picture of refined country living. The inviting swimming pool offers respite on hot days, and its one-bedroom pool house doubles as handsome guest quarters.

Before moving to Ojai, the couple lived a rural life in Topanga Canyon with horses, dogs and chickens. So it was an easy transition to Ojai with their two dogs, Willard and Pocahontas, and quarter horses Rusty and Nudge. The couple met just after Molly had completed a “moving-on ritual” on the two-year anniversary of her first husband’s death. Hawk hiked every morning on the same 160 acres in Benedict Canyon when he ran into Molly as she was coming down the hill from her ritual. He was hiking up the hill with his dog. “It was bashert, kismet, fate, meant to be,” he recalled. “This is our third act,” Hawk said, “We never thought we’d live in a gated community, but it’s a great combination of quiet, safety, and we have amazing neighbors. Ojai, with its hiking trails, even has a touch of Topanga.” “In the front yard, we live in a neighborhood; in the backyard, we live in nature,” Molly rings in. The 3,700-square-foot home, with extensive interior remodeling thanks to interior designer Bruce Abbott, is as inviting and welcoming, even as whimsical, at times, as the couple that have been married for 22 years. Decorated in the Spanish Colonial manner, the walls are filled with an eclectic collection of art that includes prints by David Hockney and Henri Matisse, sculptures (an owl sits proudly on the living room fireplace mantel) and black-and-white photographs. A commissioned painting that hangs over their bed celebrates the couple’s meeting. The home is also chock-a-block with a fascinating range of personal Hollywood treasures. A framed piece of sheet music, “Closet Cadenza” from Fibber McGee and Molly’s crashing-closet radio program segments, celebrates Molly’s famous radio program grandparents, Jim and Marian Jordan. The guitar from Wayne’s World (Hawk produced the movie) hangs in his home office, as does a photo of 12-year-old Howie (his name-change at 50 is another story!) dancing with the very va-va-voom actress Mamie Van Doren. “That’s when my puberty began!” quipped the producer of over 32 films. Hawk has worked in many capacities on more than 60 movies, including AD (assistant director) on such classic flicks as The Way We Were, Chinatown and Marathon Man and with some of Hollywood’s greatest directors, including Sydney Pollack, Roman Polanski and Francis Ford Coppola. Suffice it to say, Hawk knows everybody in the business. Having grown up during summer vacations as a kid on movie sets, he knows the business itself, inside out. The couple’s Hollywood roots are shown throughout the memorabilia-filled house, and there are many stories to tell. In addition to Molly’s famous vaudeville/radio show grandparents, her mother was film and television actress Peggy Knudsen (whose credits include The Big Sleep and Perry Mason). Famous rich men (Howard Hughes, Bill Paley and others), who fell for the alluring blonde bombshell, wooed Knudsen. Molly, a former Jungian analyst, inherited her mother’s natural beauty. Hawk’s dad, Howard W. Koch, was a noted movie producer (The Manchurian Candidate, Airplane!) who was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1990 — it sits in Hawk’s office. Hawk and his father are the only father/son team to both hold the title of President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Molly is working with Hawk on his memoir in her home office, where a compelling painting that she created (“someone I had to get on canvas”) hangs near her desk. There’s also a yoga room and a healing infrared sauna. }}

STAR POWER: Hawk and Molly both have deep roots in the Hollywood film industry, and their home is filled with homages large and small to Tinseltown. Movie posters, awards (including Koch’s Golden Globe for Heaven Can Wait, a Saturn for Frequency, and his father’s 1990 Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award), magazine pages, film stills and more can be found in the living room, office and even the bathroom.

The step-down living room is cozy with a pair of brown velvet couches from Eric Berg’s Early California Antiques. The kitchen has open steel shelving and a giant wok that Molly has yet to master. The master bedroom boasts peaceful views, a fireplace and a sliding wooden barn-style door personally monogrammed “M” on one side, “H” on the other, to the master bath with a heat-retaining copper bathtub (which also boasts healing qualities). Lucky houseguests are relegated to the dreamy one-bedroom “pool house.” If you do go on the home tour, be sure to check out the cleverly designed bathroom off the living room with designer Bruce Abbott’s “homage to Hollywood” — a signature mirror treatment framed by vintage pages from a Hollywood magazine of Hollywood dames. A black-and-white glam shot of Molly’s mom hangs on the opposite wall: “Her picture is across from the mirror so she can perpetually see herself. She would have liked that!” laughed Hawk. The bathroom sink cabinet was fashioned out of an upside-down wooden cart. There’s something of a friendly “East end vs. West end” competition among some Ojai residents. Hawk made a solid case for his West end neighborhood. “It’s cooler on the West end, and easier to get to Ventura, L.A. and Santa Barbara. I think this is the best place to live in Ojai. I just sit out here and look at the views of Old Man Mountain,” the Hollywood legend concluded. Set on two acres, with a sweet wooden tree swing, saltwater-fed pool, horses in the corrals happily lollygagging in a new sand pit and amazing views of the mountain, Hawk Koch can certainly claim that Heaven Can Wait. And yes, he was executive producer of that motion picture, too. v The Ojai Holiday Home Tour and Marketplace takes place Nov. 10-11. SHOP TALK
HISTORY IN THE MAKING A conversation with Zach Bancroft of 805 Woodworks. BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER | PORTRAIT BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN
“My brain is like popcorn,” Zach Bancroft says
as we begin a face-to-face interview on a weekday afternoon at the 805 Woodworks office in Camarillo. “When things pop up, it’s important — so I need to talk about it.” The congenial and ever-engaging founder of the custom woodwork shop, whose handiwork can be seen in many commercial and residential spaces — among them The Annex in The Collection at RiverPark, Amgen in Thousand Oaks and Ventura’s Barrelhouse 101 — is nothing if not passionate about his craft. While he can (and does) work with new materials, he has a special love for reclaimed and recycled wood, which he finds, refinishes and reincorporates, crafting old wood into something new that still has a link to its past. He talked to Ventana Monthly about his company, his design philosophy and what he finds so appealing about old material. How did you get involved in woodworking? I grew up in Grants Pass, Oregon. I chased my girlfriend — now my wife — to California. (We now have four kids.) . . . I’ve always been handy, growing up on a farm in Oregon. I always built stuff and fixed things. How did 805 Woodworks come about? In 2012 I started a company called Urban Vintiques. I was selling items from garage and estate sales and repurposing them. I’d find a metal base and a wood tabletop, for example, and I’d put them together and sell it. I started 805 Woodworks in 2014. I’d been collecting wood at my house, so the company started in my garage in Camarillo Heights. (Sorry to my neighbors!) Eventually, I found a place in Somis to put the wood. When we were out of space, we started looking for a space to up production. [The company now has offices in Camarillo as well.] Who were some of your first clients? I was doing a lot of work before as Urban Vintiques, and then two things happened. I made some benches for a client I met at the Long Beach Flea Market — that was my first custom thing that I made. Another client in Ventura saw this big, funky farm table at my house, and wanted it. She told a lot of her friends about us. They’d call and we’d do custom pieces for them. That was the catalyst. }}

How many people are in the company now? There are about 7-8 employees. It’s small, so we have to work smart. My general manager, Steve Maitland, and operations manager, Lisette Perez, are really involved; I couldn’t do this without them. I always hire people first — then I find a place for them, if I can. I have a culture of respect, kindness, working as a team and keeping it real. I’m not the easiest guy to deal with — I’m kind of intense. You’ve also done commercial work, for Amgen, The Cave in Ventura Wine Company and others. How did you start landing those bigger accounts? After doing custom work for 6-8 months, I had a customer looking . . . to build a farm table. She worked for Amgen, and she’s the reason we have our big contracts with Amgen. When they needed a conference table, she recommended us. They were happy with the work, and hired us to build about 100 umbrella bases. That was a big contract for us. Later we were selected for their “office of the future” work spaces. We’ve done about four phases and upwards of 200 tables over the past two years. And that’s been a good way to showcase what we do — that was our first big client that put faith in us. One of your specialties is working with reclaimed wood, most of which is sourced from Ventura County. Where do you get it? We used to seek out reclaimed lumber from building and fence contractors. We’d scour Craigslist. We’d take it, trim it, de-nail it and get rid of the termites. Wood for The Annex came from the Wagon Wheel. The booth seating with the scalloped edges — that’s from all the lane caps from the [bowling alley] ball return. They’re an odd shape and size; one of my guys wondered if we’d even want them. I said, “We’ll use them someday.” The bowling alleys are in the benches and red industrial tables near Scratch. Speaking of which . . . how did you get involved with The Annex? Ann Walsh [now Senior Vice President of Operations for Shea Properties] had been following me on Instagram. So she got in touch and had me walk the property. Shea Properties had some specifics [for The Annex]: beachy, rustic, industrial and eclectic. The design started with the tables, which are made from wood reclaimed from the old Wagon Wheel. We had reclaimed wood from the Wagon Wheel around 2012-13. I always knew there’d be something that would [be perfect] for it. What have been some of your favorite projects? There have been many. But what we love the most is giving people what they want, and blowing them away. I

really like what we did at The Annex. The way we incorporated the work and the feel they desired — I think we exceeded expectations. That project, I am really proud of. I’m also happy with what we did at The Cave. The owner, Nicole [Valdivia], had a vision, and we helped her get there. I always like the work to be special. I don’t want to be boring. I want it to be one of a kind. It’s exciting; it keeps the juices flowing. What do you like about working with reclaimed wood? It’s sexy. Every single piece is different. It has a history. If I go look at a piece out in the yard, I can often say, “I know where that’s from.” To be able to take the Wagon Wheel wood and it doesn’t get thrown away, but gets a new life as a table or bench or whatever — it’s neat to bring wood back to life. They also don’t make wood like they used to. [The Wagon Wheel wood] was milled in the 1950s from incredibly old trees. It’s a reminder of the way things used to be. It’s genuinely sad that we’re so concerned with money that we lose sight of what’s important. I really dislike the disposable economy. I don’t like things that are cheaply built. I want to educate people about investing in heirloom furniture. This piece of furniture will outlive you — it’s more expensive but you get what you pay for. What are some of the challenges of working with reclaimed wood? Every piece in the lumberyard is different. You let the wood tell you what it wants to do. I go out to the yard and look for pieces that will work for a particular project. Sometimes we have a plan for something, and the project changes because of the wood — so our plans are kind of fluid. Wood is an organic material; it requires a certain amount of attention. Reclaimed wood is like old leathery hands that have worked on the farm for 25 years. There’s something about that that just feels good. Anything else about your work you’d like to share with our readers? I love what we do. We are really passionate about serving people. . . . I think it’s important that we pay attention to the details. That’s part of the process of getting our customers what they want. Anybody can go to the store and buy furniture and make it work. But they don’t love it. We want to give [our customers] something that makes them say, “That’s cool. It’s exactly what I want.” v 805 WOODWORKS 4500 East Los Angeles Avenue, Suite D, Somis 828 Via Alondra, Camarillo 805.651.3191 www.805woodworks.com
THE ANNEX AT THE COLLECTION showcases some of Bancroft’s finest work, including booths that employ the ball returns from the Wagon Wheel’s bowling alley, and an undulating 21-foot bench, which brings to mind both waves and a whale’s skeleton. Once at The Annex’s front entrance, the bench has since been moved to the offices of Shea Properties.

BEAUTY RESTORED An architectural gem in Hobson Heights gets a facelift to restore her historical charm and elegance.
I
BY KAREN LINDELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHAD JONES n real estate, home flipping v. historical renovation can be compared to pancakes. Buying a house and fixing it up to sell it for a quick profit is not unlike whipping up pancakes from a mix and slathering them in store-bought syrup, prepared by anyone who can read directions on a box. Renovating a house is akin to painstakingly making those pancakes from scratch, with syrup sourced from Vermont, all crafted by an executive chef. An estate home in Ventura’s Hobson Heights neighborhood has gone the gourmet route. The historical home, built in 1938, fell into various states of disrepair over the years under different owners. It has been lovingly restored by the current owner, real estate developer and construction consultant Trevor Eikenbary of Ventura, who specializes in historical renovations and bought the home in March. Eikenbary and his crew completely renovated the Spanish-style estate, taking care to maintain classic features like the white oak floors, a domed copper breakfast-nook ceiling and old-fashioned fixtures, while incorporating modern amenities like recessed lighting, new plumbing and sleek appliances. }}
ON A CLEAR DAY it feels as though you can see forever (or at least out to the Channel Islands) from the spacious balcony of the upstairs master suite.

“Flipping is not concerned with the historical integrity of the architecture or features of the home, or how the house was meant to be lived in,” Eikenbary said. “I’m really committed to bringing out the historical elegance of the house.” Eikenbary said he purchased the home because he had been looking for a house that needed “significant restoration to bring it back to its original beauty. This was a real diamond in the rough. I’ve done a lot of historical renovations over the years, but this was far from what it once was, more so than anything I’ve ever seen.” His Ventura realtor, Judy Fairchild, was more blunt: “It was daunting,” she said of the restoration project. At 51 Lincoln Drive, historical integrity begins at the front door. Eikenbary, who preserved the home’s original mahogany wood door with peekaboo windows, speaks passionately about the door’s details. “For locks on most doors now, you just bore a hole through the door,” he said. “But we have this mortise lock, where you have to cut into the side and face of the doors to receive the lock. And we used the original glass knobs and metal, so when you open the door, you grab what the original owners grabbed.” As for honoring how the house was “meant to be lived in,” according to Eikenbary, that meant taking advantage of the ocean views and providing plenty of space inside and out for entertaining. The 3,880-square-foot home, on 18,981 square feet of land, has five bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms. As in other Hobson Heights homes, occupants have prime views of the ocean and Channel Islands. The Lincoln Drive home preserves the original tall windows throughout — the 1930s glass is rare; building codes today wouldn’t allow it — and includes six outdoor lounging/dining spaces. Nearly every room has access to an outside area via a balcony or patio. Outside dining areas include Spanish tile and wrought-iron features, and a pergola on pea-gravel flooring. On a smaller scale, Eikenbary paid attention to every little detail in the house. “I spent a lot of time identifying and salvaging what’s already there, and being very, very careful with it,” Eikenbary said. Other elegant features that Eikenbary preserved are the 12- to 14-inch-tall intricate crown molding, metal basins in several of the bathrooms, and tile throughout, whether on the floors or on the fireplace in the living room. “In a few places where it’s falling out, the workman spent hours cutting it out,” Eikenbary said of the fireplace tiles. “In a flip you quickly knock it out and replace it. In a renovation you spend hours with a small sharp knife chiseling tile to reuse and preserve it.” A powder room downstairs contains the original metal basin sink. “It’s more cost-efficient to buy a sink at a home-improvement store, mount it and be done with it,” Eikenbary said. “We have modern plumbing and faucets, but the historical renovation element is re-using and revitalizing that basin.” }}

His biggest renovation challenge, he said, was finding someone to craft a wrought-iron railing that “looked topnotch but handmade, and incorporate it into the main staircase. That element was really important to me.” Each step of the prominent circular staircase in the main area downstairs is decorated with colorful Spanish tiles handmade in Mexico. Downstairs is a breakfast nook with a vaulted ceiling and copper dome roof. The nearby Spanish-style kitchen has a plastered-in range hood, with hanging pendant lights over the sink. Custom cabinets look as though they are from a long-ago era, but inside contain modern luxuries such as soft-closing hinges — a rare instance of newer hardware beating out vintage fixtures. The kitchen also has a butler’s pantry and basalt counters, often found in older homes. Eikenbary said another challenge was the landscaping. He worked with a landscaper to determine what the home would have looked like when it was built. He sought out Mediterranean flora, including olive trees and agave plants. The home does have a front lawn, but the remainder of the landscaping requires minimal water to maintain, Eikenbary said. Double doors lead into the master bedroom suite, which has more of those tall windows, along with a wrap-around balcony covered with a trellis, offering views of the harbor, ocean and islands. The basement has a wine cellar refurbished with unstained alder wood to give it a vintage look. “There’s an old element to the wine cellar; you think you’re walking into some kind of speakeasy,” Eikenbary said. Even though the home has a roomy footprint, the vibe is neither daunting nor imposing. According to Fairchild, “We had 150 people for an open house and the house just absorbed it. No one ever felt crowded or stepped-on. Yet you don’t feel like you’re in a cavernous place. The design lends itself to easy entertaining.” Despite all the Spanish authenticity, one of the home’s most charming elements has a decidedly English flavor. Underneath the curving staircase is a closet that Eikenbary calls the Harry Potter closet — after the cupboard that Harry Potter was forced to live in by the Dursleys in J.K. Rowling’s book series. “My wife and kids put Harry Potter books, a wand and a candle in there,” he said. So in addition to all the historical touches, the house has a touch of magic, too. v TREVOR EIKENBARY 805.698.5362 trevor.eikenbary22@gmail.com CHAD JONES PHOTOGRAPY 805.390.6965 www.chadjonesphoto.com

SEAMLESS STYLE: In the kitchen (top), classic style has been harmoniously blended with modern amenities. The soft green paint and vintage fixtures have the charm of an era gone by, but the stone countertops and luxury appliances are up to the minute. Upstairs, the master bedroom (middle) is both stunning and spacious, with its own balcony, a walk-in closet and a large master bath. French doors (above) lead to a Mediterraneanstyle garden, with drought-tolerant landscaping, a pergola and a large farm table — ideal for outdoor entertaining.

ABOUT TOWN
Nancy and Scott Switzler with their dog Demi in the dining room that, through a serendipitous coincidence, now proudly displays its original furnishings.
HOUSE OF SPIRITS
The traces left behind in a 1918 Craftsman create a blueprint for renovation in Oxnard. BY MARK STORER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL MOORE
Divine inspiration has multiple purposes. It is not always about progressive action. Sometimes, the inspiration is that we must retrieve what was lost, restore before we renovate and change. Being open to such change is a matter one learns, of course, as did Nancy and Scott Switzler of Oxnard. She’s a pastor at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Oxnard and he is purchasing manager for NuSil Technology in Carpinteria. A Craftsman house on G Street in the historic district of Oxnard inspired them and they bought it in 2013. It speaks quietly and, as Nancy said, it leaves ghosts behind, clues of what was once there from the time it was built in 1918 at the close of WWI. Like all houses of the time, the front end of the house, living room and dining room, took up more than half the square footage. The Switzlers renovated. Indeed, they added 400 square feet to the original 1,200 square feet. But that was after the conversation
that Nancy began having with the house. “I’m a pastor, so I work at home a lot and sometimes I’d sit here in the dining room where I usually work and it’s like the house was talking to me,” she said. “I’d see a little crack and lift it up and realize, ‘whoa, there’s wood under here,’ and I’d begin scraping.” Nancy began working in the inglenook, a small space in the living room near the front entrance where the fireplace faces out and two small seats face each other. “We were told it was redwood, but it isn’t,” she said. “It’s Douglas fir and there’s nothing wrong with Douglas fir. It’s really quite lovely.” A neighbor, Jay Zimmerman, is a finish carpenter and he milled all the wood of the pieces that were lost amid the restoration. }}

Likening the project to church work or to her newfound hobby of marathon running, Nancy began the 21-month process of restoring the living and dining rooms. “You just keep going, one thing at a time,” she said. She moved slowly, working small section by small section, removing layers of wallpaper and finishing, polishing and restoring the old wood with a combination of polyurethane and linseed oil until its original luster appeared. Columns of Douglas fir separate room spaces; and the crown molding, milled to an angle that appears all over the house, ties in a theme that allows a kind of consistency throughout. Meanwhile, the windows that are single-pane, double-hung and contain the original “wavy glass,” which has a liquid texture to it from certain angles, allow light to splash in, throwing distinct but moving patterns upon walls and wood structures. They keep out very little noise and they’re probably not effective insulation, but they are glorious nonetheless. “When the sun comes in the windows, it throws patterns of light everywhere,” said Nancy. “There’s so much light in each room, it’s actually kind of hard to photograph.” Like ghosts themselves, the light changes with the progress of each day, and fluid and flowing images cross the wood and the walls as sunlight dapples throughout the hours. Pictures that Nancy has of the house before she began renovations reveal other textures, outdated carpeting (actually the first of two layers of carpeting) and padding and faux wood finishes covering up the natural wood underneath. “You can see the ghost of the old plate rail, here along the wall,” Nancy said, pointing to a small but distinct pattern. “But Jay and I decided not to put it back in the exact same place because we wanted to keep that ghost of what was there before.” Over the years through the 20th and into the 21st century, previous owners did things like glue windows shut or nail down doublehung panes, requiring Nancy to learn through trial and error how to unstick, re-stain and return them to some kind of former glory. Ditching the carpet in favor of the wood floor, which she also restored, the living and dining areas are furnished with something close to the house’s original furniture as well. “We were told that there is a story of furniture that was made to go with the house, but a previous owner took it,” said Nancy. “While I was in the middle of this project, a woman and her daughter came by. They were previous owners, and the woman wanted to show her daughter the house she lived in.” Nancy said that later, the woman’s ex-husband came by and said that he had the furniture from the divorce but that he was redecorating and wanted to give the furniture back to the Switzlers. “He said the furniture was purchased in the 1930s or ’40s,” Nancy said. All of the dining room furniture, an end table, a rocking chair and two other chairs came back to the house, all with ornate wood carving, looking, coincidentally, like furniture one might find in a church. “Some of it needs restoration, but maybe later,” she said. The centerpiece of the dining and living areas is a large built-in bar and storage cabinet that Nancy restored using the original beveled glass for the doors. The dominant feature is both artwork and a functional bar area. }}

The renovation began behind the dining area in the kitchen, extending its size and building an addition behind it with the help of AAA Development, contractors in Camarillo. Pictures of the old kitchen reveal a room nearly half the size of what it is now, and poorly designed. “It was hard to get into the kitchen because the counter sort of stuck out into the walkway,” Nancy said. She kept an original cabinet along one wall of the kitchen and restored it by stripping it of layers of paint. But more ghosts spoke to her as the image of the original hinges of the doors were embedded in the paint and she was able to find matches in her search. By knocking out 4 feet of a bathroom behind the kitchen, they were able to expand it to a more workable size. The house used to end at the back wall of the kitchen. The renovation expanded it by 400 square feet, allowing for a breakfast nook, sitting room, bathroom, laundry room and walk-in closet, which connects to the master bedroom. The second bedroom, originally intended as a guest room or study, has been host to the couple’s grown children of late. Their daughter recently moved out to the San Fernando Valley where she is working as a preschool teacher, and their son is now home obtaining another degree. “We bought small, thinking it would just be us, but it’s worked out well so far,” she said. To be sure, there are more ghosts. Recently, Nancy noticed that stucco and paint on the front porch are covering up the original brick; she has uncovered it in small bits on one side. “I think the brick would be lovely and I’d really like to get back to that, so that’s probably next,” she said. Restoration as renewal instead of change for its own sake suits the Switzlers. There’s something invigorating, perhaps even biblical, about finding what was lost and giving it new life. It merely requires the stillness and quiet to sit, listen and be called to action. The Switzlers’ home will be part of the 2018 Autumn Historic Home Tour that takes place in the Henry T. Oxnard National Historic District on Sunday, Sept. 23.
