We respond: “Ho.” I switch paddle from right to left of boat. *stroke *stroke *stroke (stroke 13 to 15 times) Repeat until the signal: “Paddles up.” Think quick, move fast. Keep pace with the person two seats in front of me. That person keeps pace with the person in seat 1. (I am in seat 4.) Seat 1 slows down, seat 2 slows down, I slow down. Seat 1 speeds up, seat 2 speeds up, I paddle in a hurry! Don’t get sloppy. Lift the paddle quickly out of the water but make sure it is fully out, lest I

cause drag, but keep paddle low to the canoe when switching sides or else I will lose my grip and pace. Must be a smooth transition. Shift legs when we switch sides. Left side, left leg in front, right leg bent and right foot under me. Right side, right leg in front, left leg bent and left foot under me. Hold paddle at the top and just above the wide end, keep paddle upright with high elbow bent, bury wide end in water but do not stroke past my hip, which would also cause drag. Use my hips and torso to dig paddle into the water for efficiency and power. Focus. Don’t get distracted. All six people in the canoe count on me (six is capacity); we all count on each other. Distractions cost time. Get in a rhythm. Enjoy the intensity. Feel the glide of the boat. Stroke. Stroke. Stroke. The water sparkles CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

oller coasters and rocket ships, chemistry and computers, insects and ecology: The world is full of scientific wonders for which kids seem to have a natural affinity. If you’ve got a budding STEM enthusiast in the family, there are several local summer camps that offer programs designed to unleash every kid’s mad scientist. Play-Well TEKnologies might be the best known of the STEM-based kids programs. Its Ninjago-, Star Wars- and Minecraft-themed camps are popular for a reason: they embrace popular media, and their tools of the trade are Legos. “We teach kids about engineering through Legos using principals of physics and science,” explains Bob Lund,

Play-Well’s Pacific West regional manager. “We give them the opportunity to build and create, all while playing with some cool toys.” Small class sizes (generally 12-15 campers per counselor) make sure kids get the help and guidance they need, but open-ended guidelines encourage self-expression, problem solving and creativity. “Kids build intricate projects . . . and then with the special motors we provide, they can see their creations come to life,” Lund says. A wide variety of Play-Well camps are offered in Ojai, Ventura, Moorpark, Camarillo and the Conejo Valley, and the online registration system makes it easy to find (and sign up for) a nearby camp.
