drama they will endure while deciding on things like the dress, a theme, the ceremony location, the reception venue, the caterer, the florist, the photographer and all of the decisions inbetween. It is no wonder many a couple throw up their hands and run off to Las Vegas to tie the knot!

Wedding planning has also evolved over the years. Twenty years ago, the bride primarily did it all, and much of the weight of responsibility was on her maid of honor or the family. Everyone had something to do!

A recent study at South University based in Savannah, Georgia, reveals that weddings have dramatically changed over the last 20 to 50 years.

For example, even though traditions still exist, there is less emphasis on such customs. From the ceremony to the reception, nothing has remained the same. According to the study, “Many aspects of weddings have changed, including the roles of clergy, and the bridesmaids and groomsmen, reception styles, locations and wedding attire.”

Thematic weddings have become popular, as well as destination weddings and honeymoons.

According to weddingsforaliving.com, “The average wedding costs around $28,000, and requires more than 15 types of wedding professionals/ vendors.” In addition, “Wedding planners are no longer reserved for the rich and the famous, but instead have become a necessity for time-pressed couples.”

Certainly, the influx of wedding shows like Bridezilla, Whose Wedding Is It Anyway, Say Yes to the Dress, and My Fair Wedding with David Tutera — the ultimate wedding planner — have radically emphasized the high stress-filled insanity that can accompany planning a wedding.

No matter what the theme, décor or lack thereof, every bride has a vision of the way her special day is supposed to play out, but most are not sure how to make that happen. Truthfully, brides today have a lot more freedom to express and flaunt their style as a couple. Times have definitely changed, and the checklist of do’s and don’ts has increased with so many design options, creativity, location spots and themed weddings.

having a good wedding planner is one of the most important decisions a bride and groom can make.

“It can make all the difference in the world, especially with keeping a bride on a budget,” Anderson said.

While a wedding is clearly about the bride and her fiancé wanting to share their love and desire to commit with family and friends, keeping the guests happy should be paramount.

“There are a number of factors that every couple should consider when planning their wedding and the reception,” Anderson said.

• Budget — pull together your budget and establish your top priorities. Figure out where you want to save and where you want to splurge.

• Find a planner that you can trust, and be sure to express your needs from beginning to end, and he or she will do the rest. So B –R – E –A –T –H –E! • Pick a date, and make sure it is not at an odd time of year.

• The bride should find her dress and focus on a theme. Next, the bridesmaids’ dresses and the rest of the wedding party.

• Find a venue, and one that is realistic. For example, out in the middle of the forest at the base of a raging river — this is not reasonable for any elderly person. Or choosing outdoor ceremony and reception sites, subjecting your guests to extreme weather conditions.

• Making sure you serve incredible food and drink.

(Cash bars are never popular.)

• Finding an amazing DJ (good music is paramount).

• Don’t let vendors talk you into things you don’t want! Remember, if it doesn’t feel like you, don’t do it!

• Choose a professional photographer (videographer) and hair and makeup professional. Having shiny faces or crazy hair will stand out in your pictures.

• Go to bridal shows and get ideas. Believe it or not, it will help you solidify your own desires.

• Utilize the Internet and set up a Pinterest board.

Pinterest has become one of the No. 1 places for brides to sort through theme ideas, style and colors.

1. Photography “The day goes by so, so quickly,” says Jennifer Chapman of Jennifer Jeanne Events in Camarillo. “Having a photographer is key, to help you maintain those memories.” And it’s not always about the formal portraits — although those are important, too.

A good wedding photographer will capture the ambience, the warmth, both the touching and comical moments — all those aspects that help you relive the experience. Moorpark-based coordinator Cynthia Wennberg agrees, adding, “In a wedding, pretty much everything is a throwaway … except for your rings and the pictures.” Joelle Charming from Camarillo also believes quality photography is a wise investment, even if you have to compromise a little. “If you can’t afford a good photographer at full price, consider getting a smaller package, or book them for a shorter amount of time.”

2. Food Ventura County is overrun with foodies, setting the bar high for the nuptial feast. “Guests won’t remember just OK food,” says Charming, “but they’ll definitely remember bad food.”

What you want them to remember is good food, and for Wennberg, that means hot, tasty, on time and plenty of it. Note she doesn’t specify expensive. “People don’t really expect filet mignon,” she explains. “I once did a wedding with a pasta bar. Guests mingled while they chose their noodles and the things they wanted in it, and they loved it — it almost became part of the entertainment.” Don’t bust the bank on steak and lobster; focus on quality, flavor and an appetizing presentation, and you’ll be golden.

HISTORIC The Camarillo Ranch has a long, rich legacy in Ventura County. Now a very popular wedding venue, the property was originally a 10,000 acre Mexican land grant, which was later owned by Adolfo Camarillo, the city’s founder, for over sixty years. Today the Ranch is owned by the City of Camarillo and operated by the Camarillo Ranch Foundation.

CHARMING The historic 4.5 acre venue offers four event spaces, which include the fully restored, yet still charmingly rustic Red Barn; and the three beautifully manicured gardens, which feature a wedding gazebo, mature trees, water fountains, twinkle lights, and a rose-covered arch. A Bridal Suite is also available in the 1892 Queen Anne Victorian Mansion on wedding days for photography and bridal party usage.

RUSTIC The impressive grounds can accomodate outdoor weddings for upwards of 600 guests, while the renovated Red Barn can host year-round weddings for up to 250. Couples can also take advantage of the beautifully restored Victorian mansion, which serves as the perfect backdrop for photography.

PERSONAL The Ranch is a location only venue, allowing couples plenty of creative flexibility when creating their dream wedding.

Knowing what kind of music to play, and when to play it, to get and keep people on the dance floor, is a unique skill set; your reception just won’t be the same without it. “You want a really rockin’ party,” Chapman says. “A good DJ can make or break the celebration.”

There are many good reasons not to skimp on photography, food and a DJ for your special celebration. “The first wedding I ever did on my own, the bride and groom provided mini champagne bottles for all of their guests. The wedding took place outside, on a super-rainy day. The guests didn’t mind, though — they just used the rain as an excuse to shoot champagne at each other! I don’t think any of it was actually consumed; by the end of the night, the couple and their friends were soaking wet, from both rain and champagne.”

The hotel clerk remembered the wedding party, so she called the one contact number she had for them: the bride. The best man is still hearing about that one.”
