From the moment she says “yes,” the groom-to-be is in for quite a ride, and most men are not prepared for the wedding trail path. In fact, it is safe to say that the bride and groom are not on the same page when it comes to this journey.

“Oftentimes men are in the dark until they are faced with a sudden decision during the planning, and even then, many would rather sit on the sidelines while their fiancée tackles it,” said Cynthia Wennberg, a local wedding planner and events coordinator. “It’s a trick to pull together a wedding memory without breaking the bank or creating friction, and that’s where having a reliable and efficient wedding planner to work alongside of you is vital.”

Today, wedding planners and coordinators are as common as the ceremony itself, when 20 years ago, having a wedding planner was a luxury.

“There is also a big difference between a wedding planner and a wedding coordinator. A planner walks you through the process from the engagement to the goodbyes at the reception. A coordinator helps with the actual ceremony,” Wennberg said.

While the bulk of the financial responsibility has been on the bride’s parents, etiquette expert Emily Post lists a number of obligations that the groom and his parents are traditionally responsible for: The bride's rings, the bride's bouquet, the men’s boutonnières, the bachelor party (if you have one), men’s thank-you gifts, transportation for the family members from the ceremony to the reception, lodging of the groomsmen’s attendants and the honeymoon.

Here in Southern California, tradition seems to be taking a back seat today, as couples are redefining not only who pays for what, but also every aspect of what was once considered the norm, from the ceremony to the reception.

“Today, very few couples follow tradition, especially here in Southern California. But generally, the groom still pays for the rings, the rehearsal dinner, the marriage license and the honeymoon,” Wennberg said.

After five years of dating, Jamie and Kelli Almos tied the knot on Oct. 15, 2015, at the Calamigos Ranch in Malibu. The average wedding costs between $15,826 and $27,317 for 100 guests. The Almoses had nearly 200 guests and nine bridesmaids and they enjoyed a lavishly prepared sit-down dinner of salmon and prime rib with a vegan option — definitely a high-end wedding.

much of a budget. In hind sight, we should have had more of a set budget in mind, but we didn’t,” Kelli said. The couple did not really know how much planning was involved, nor did they know how expensive it would be.

“Truthfully, I don’t think guys put two and two together until the last minute, and then it’s too late.

I didn’t. For the most part, most men are clueless. I know a lot of guys who just want to show up for the wedding and plan the honeymoon. They really don’t want to be involved, but in retrospect, I think that’s a mistake,” Jamie said.

Bottom line: Grooms should be involved, informed and communicate with the bride and their families. “Grooms shouldn’t go into this ignorant.

Don’t wait for your bride to tell you what to do. Do your research and communicate. After all, communication is everything,” Wennberg said. wg

HISTORIC

The Camarillo Ranch has a long, rich legacy in Ventura County. Now a popular wedding venue, the property was originally a 10,000 acre Mexican land grant and was later owned by the City of Camarillo’s namesake, Adolfo Camarillo.

Today the Ranch is owned by the City of Camarillo and operated by the nonprofit organization, the Camarillo Ranch Foundation. All profits from wedding site rentals help preserve the historic “gem.”

CHARMING

The historic 4.5 acre venue offers four event spaces, which includes the fully restored, yet still charmingly rustic Red Barn; and the three beautifully manicured gardens that feature a wedding gazebo, mature trees, water fountains, romantic lighting, and a rose-covered arch. A Bridal Suite is also available in the 1892 Queen Anne style Victorian Mansion.

RUSTIC

The impressive grounds can accommodate outdoor weddings for upwards of 600 guests, while the renovated Red Barn can host year-round weddings for up to 250. Couples can also take advantage of the beautifully restored Victorian Mansion, which serves as the perfect backdrop for wedding photography.

PERSONAL

The Ranch is a location only venue, allowing couples plenty of creative flexibility when creating their dream wedding. Include: 16 hours of access, host to one event per day, choice of event spaces, private bridal suite, complimentary parking, indoor restroom facilities, catering prep kitchen, and audio and visual equipment.

Hale has seen a shift in trends over the last year. “Less rustic and more classic is where the trend seems to be going. Girls want more classic elegance — sort of Audrey Hepburn meets 2016.

They want to look like a bride, so we’re seeing softer colors, sparkles, beading, long sleeves and lots of lace,” McHale said.

According to McHale, out of 200 bridal gowns she recently ordered, only two of them were white. “No one wants white, and the designers are avoiding it like the plague,” says McHale.

“White actually pulls the pink tones out of your skin. Ivory tones are much warmer. Other popular colors that are trending are: oyster, champagne, moscato (dark blush), which is named after the moscato (Muscat) grape, and, of course, it pairs well with wine.”

“We’re always going to have those who want to go a little bit country because of our spanning hillsides and incredible weather, but soft, classy elegance is back. Brides are looking at that classic skirt design, not a lot of big princess style, but elegant and sophisticated. I am really excited! Brides are really looking like brides,” McHale said. wg

hen planning the celebration of a lifetime, no one is overjoyed at the mention of the word budget. In fact, in some cases, it might be considered a dirty word. Even with the current extravagant trends seen on popular reality TV shows like Say Yes to the Dress and My Fair Wedding, the reality of money becomes keynote in how a wedding is actually planned and played out. The harsh reality is that these television shows paint a very unrealistic picture of what most brides and grooms can actually afford.

Keep in mind that a television show has limitless resources to make certain everything is just so, from the incandescent lighting, to the picture-perfect flowers displayed without reservation and onto the designer gowns that few can afford.

“The last upscale wedding my daughter was in cost her well over $1,000 between the dress, the shoes and the bride’s weekend away. She works as a waitress while going to grad school. Imagine my surprise when she asked if she could borrow the money for her girlfriend’s wedding,” said Julia Molner.

Many girls have spent half a lifetime dreaming of their wedding day — perhaps they have even played it out hundreds of times in their heads.

No one enjoys having their parade rained on, but couples should prepare themselves and come up with a sensible plan.

Clueless is the understatement, especially if they’ve been mesmerized by any of the wedding reality shows and, if many brides have little to no at idea about planning a wedding, it’s practically guaranteed that most grooms are oblivious. “Men tend to run on a need-to-know basis, and most guys are focused on pleasing their bride so they are quick to go along with most everything,” Wennberg said.

Three years ago, Amanda Lanum and Tim Masso met at the Mini of Camarillo dealership. Their wedding date is slated for Oct.15, 2016. With nine months of planning ahead, there is a lot to do.

“We don’t have a wedding planner yet, and we sort of have a budget, but I’m not sure what it is,” Lanum said, giggling. “I know budgets are really important, and I really do wish I had a better idea of what mine is. My parents will be pretty involved with the expenses of our wedding.”

Lanum has been to a lot of weddings over the last couple of years, but admitted that it is very different to be walking this road herself. She thought that she knew what she was doing until she jumped into the saddle and started riding.

Wennberg believes a couple needs to be steered, and it begins with reasonable expectations and a sensible budget. From there, you start with the thing you want the most. If food is the No. 1 priority, you begin with the venue and the caterer. According to The Knot. com, a reception is 48 percent to 50 percent of your cost. “If your wedding budget is $40,000, and you choose a venue that costs you $20,000, you’re going to run into trouble,” Wennberg said.

Masso says they know what they are doing based on the some “900 weddings they’ve attended over the last couple of years,” and while they really don’t have a budget, Masso admits, “We don’t but Amanda’s parents do!” All kidding aside, both Lanum and Masso believe that having a budget and a game plan is paramount. They also believe that having realistic expectations is secondary to budgeting. Their advice to other couples: “Vegas.” wg

Planning Your Wedding

A timeline to make planning your special day better 10-12 Months Prior q Tour and select your wedding venue. Your date will depend on the availability of your venue. q Hash out a budget and figure out who is responsible for what payments q Begin discussing your vision for your big day (i.e., size, style, theme, etc.) q Get organized. It’s important to have one place where you can find all of your wedding information.

Whether it is a binder, folder or tote bag is completely up to you. q Begin compiling a guest list to help you determine a head count.

This will be important information to have when you are gathering quotes from vendors. q Hire a Wedding Coordinator.

On the biggest day of your life you should not be worrying about the details. A wedding coordinator is there to make sure you and your loved ones are “in the moment” and not worrying about anything other than making beautiful memories.

8-10 Months Prior q Buy your wedding gown. These dresses are made to order and can take 4-6 months to be made. This

is the most important garment that you will ever wear in your life and you don’t want to leave anything to chance. q Select your Wedding Party. It’s important to give as much notice as possible because this is a big time and monetary commitment for them. They will definitely appreciate it! q Hire a Caterer. q Hire a Florist. q Hire a Photographer. q Hire a Videographer. q Book your DJ or any additional entertainers you plan on having at either the ceremony or the reception.

6-8 Months Prior q Make sure that you have your party rentals reserved (i.e., chairs, linens, heaters, lanterns, lounge furniture, etc.) q Schedule cake tastings and select the bakery you want to work with.

It’s time to begin designing your cake. q Book an engagement photo session, especially if you plan on using these images for your Savethe-Dates or invitations. q Start planning your honeymoon.

4-6 Months Prior q Reserve a block of rooms at a local hotel for your out-of-town guests. q Send out your Save-the-Dates at the 6 month mark. This will allow your guests to make travel arrangements. q Begin your registries for wedding gifts and bridal shower gifts. q Shop for and order Bridesmaids dresses. Just like your wedding gown these dresses are made to order. You also want to ensure that they all come from the same dye lot, too. q Don’t forget about Mom and Grandma. These important women in your life need to look fabulous, too, and their dresses can take the same amount of time as the bridesmaids’ dresses to arrive. q Find the perfect Flower Girl dress for your special little lady! q Shop for wedding rings q Finalize the guest list q Order invitations q Hire your Hair and Makeup Artists for you and your Bridal Party. It’s important to have an idea of how many people will need these services so they can have

enough staff for your big day. q Finalize your honeymoon plans.

If you are going out of the country, you should make sure you have all the necessary documents (i.e., passports or visas). q Reserve your limousine or any other transportation you will need on your wedding day. q Book your officiant.

2-4 Months Prior q Order tuxedos/suites for the Groom, Groomsmen, Fathers and Grandfathers. q Plan the rehearsal dinner. q Obtain a marriage license. q Take your wedding gown in for alterations. Seamstresses can book up quickly so do not assume that you can wait until the last minute.

Give yourself plenty of time to get the perfect fit and be sure to have all of your undergarments and shoes with you as they will affect your alterations.

4-8 Weeks Prior q Mail the invitations 8 weeks before the wedding. q Do a hair and makeup trial so that there are no surprises the day of your wedding.

2-4 Weeks Prior q Work on seating arrangements for the reception. q Finish paying off balances to your vendors. q Arrange to have your final wedding dress fitting. q Bridesmaids should take their dresses in for alterations, too. q Purchase gifts for your Wedding Party. q Communicate rehearsal dinner details with those who will be attending.

1 Week Prior q Take your dress and veil in for a final pressing service.
