erhaps one of the most important decisions a bride will make when planning her wedding is choosing her gown. The bridal gown sets the theme for the wedding, and everything else hinges on the bride’s selection. While traditional wedding dresses have, in recent centuries, been the more popular choice, they are not the only option. A bride should be able to choose according to her own desire and taste. She is, after all, the star of the show! Pamela Henderson, owner of Camarillo Bridal & Gorgeous Gowns, says the wedding business is “Such a happy industry to be a part of,” and claims that she does not deal with Bridezilla types. Despite the efforts of the popular reality television show, to make every bride out to be an excessive, spoiled brat, Henderson maintains that she has never met a bride she didn’t like.

Over the last decade, there has been a shift from elaborate, formal weddings to celebrations that are more intimate and casual. “About 80 percent of our business is with brides who still want a more customary-type wedding, but they are definitely not as formal,” says Henderson. Those bigger, heavily beaded, full princessstyle gowns have taken somewhat of a backseat to mermaid cuts, drop waists, and simpler fitted gowns. Henderson says, “Destination weddings have also been on the decline, and that’s most likely economy-related.” Even so, the wedding business

“When I decided to get married at 40, I couldn’t find a dress with the modernity or sophistication I wanted. That’s when I saw the opportunity for a wedding gown business.” — Vera Wang seems to be on the rise in Ventura County. Camarillo Bridal & Gorgeous Gowns will be moving from a 2,000-square-foot store to a 7,000-square-foot store in March. A wedding dress doesn’t always have to be conventional. During the Victorian age, gowns were not even white. The traditional white gown did not come into play until 1840, when Queen Victoria married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg, and here in the United States, white became the rage only after the Industrial Revolution in the U.S. (about 1870). Some alternatives for the nonconformist: two-piece gowns, mixing and matching tops and bottoms (which work well for the bride who wears two different sizes) and vintage dresses. In addition to the typical bridal salons, second-hand stores, consignment shops and Internet auction sites are great places to find exclusive bridal couture.

oneymoon vacations that are romantic and fun, but still provide excellent value, are not an impossible dream.

Mike Burroughs manages the Ventura office of Santa Barbara Travel Bureau, and says many young honeymooners prefer relaxing, all-inclusive tropical resorts on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, including the Grand Velas Riviera Maya or Secrets Maroma Beach. “The packages include your airfare, your transfers, your accommodations, all your meals, all your drinks. Your tipping is included,” says Burroughs. “There are no hidden costs. They get to have fun, they get to have drinks. We’re seeing a lot of that for our honeymoon clientele, not breaking the bank.” Burroughs says cruises to Hawaii and other destinations departing from California are also popular with budget-minded couples, and avoid the hassles of flying. “It’s a really good value and lot of people like it,” says Borroughs. “It’s a romantic honeymoon-type thing, being up on the deck and seeing the moon and the ocean, and you’re up there with your one.” Another option is staying even closer to home, at highly rated properties like the Simpson House Bed and Breakfast in Santa Barbara or the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa. marketing representative. “I think it’s just a charming little getaway. It’s really a town like no other. I mean, there’s no stoplight; it just slows life down. You just really have time to set aside and focus on your spouse,” says Atkins. The 20-room hotel offers romantic packages, including couples spa treatments, wine tasting and golf outings. “We have horseback riding in our vineyards at the Fess Parker Winery. We have a cooking package where you can both learn how to cook at a local winery. So most of our packages are focused towards couples,” says Atkins. Couples with their hearts set on romantic European cities like Paris or Rome can even accomplish that relatively inexpensively with the right planning. Ventura Travel Service Manager Carolyn Martz says booking a package in the fall or early spring saves money even in expensive cities like Paris. “You can do some nice properties on the Left Bank that don’t run a whole lot of money,” says Martz. “We can incorporate the airfare, the land portion, some touring of the city. And a lot of cities have the hop on, hop off buses which are very affordable and take you all over to show you the sights. p until the moment a bride says, “I do,” she is immersed in an all-consuming to-do list with some traditions that are unwavering. The bridal gown that sets the tone for the ceremony, and the wedding cake, which is an implemental part of establishing a theme at the reception. Wedding cakes have traditional roots as far back as the Roman Empire, but they looked nothing like wedding cakes in today’s culture. Those socalled cakes were nothing more than a loaf of barley bread that was broken over the bride’s head by the groom as a symbol of her virginity being broken.

From the 17th to the middle of the 19th century, bride’s pies were the rage. These pies were filled with sweet breads and a glass ring – a ring that would portend marriage for any single female who found it. It was not until the end of the 19th century that wedding cakes entered into the picture, and they were far from the varied works of art seen today. Despite the fact that the wedding cake is still considered one of the most important parts of a wedding celebration, today’s cakes are anything but common. Simply put – times have changed, and so have wedding cakes! The popular television show Amazing Wedding Cakes broadcasts creativity to the hilt, and it is a good indicator that the traditional white, multitiered wedding cake is under revision. Jana Richardson, owner of Jana’s Creative Cakes in Ventura and a recently featured guest on an episode of TLC’s Battle of the Wedding Designers, says, “Unique is the new tradition.” While the wedding cake has gone through modification, the demand for high-quality ingredients is on the rise.
