Editorial STRATEGY ISSUE 9 / 2014 SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS If you asked me what the greatest lesson I’ve learned in business this year was, it would be the importance of planning. I’m a creator. I love innovating and developing, and Venus is now at a stage where I can spend a lot of my time in this space. Venus has grown considerably since our last magazine. We’ve launched our Sassy Business Training Programme, our Business Teams, which are now thriving in Auckland, Tauranga and Wellington along with eight new networking groups. However what this has meant, is that my passion for creating trumped my strategic skills. If I’m completely honest, I launched one too many things. I believe we have created amazing offerings this year, and the feedback has been heart-warming. But it has been a hard road which I would not choose to repeat, or recommend to anyone. If I had created a plan for each project, before starting, I would have been able to enjoy the ride more. What I needed was a simple plan with a clear set of steps, with all the resources required and the time it would take to deliver. This is why I chose ‘strategy’ as our theme. Having a plan is fundamental to the sustainable and profitable growth of your business.

the importance of planning and time management. She is also our longest standing regional manager and a dedicated Venusian. We’ve filled this issue with articles and stories to inspire and equip you on your business journey. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I have enjoyed bringing them together. What I’ve learned this year, is that planning is an essential part of any businesswoman’s journey. It will provide the framework for you to thrive, for you to have time with your family and friends, and will allow you to set yourself up for success in 2015. Wishing you a relaxing, soul-enriching summer. Love your work.

CELEBRATING Article by Kathryn Overall Photography by Logan Davey

D

ebbie Albrecht is a woman of style who is known for her generosity, panache and trademark colourful outfits. Kathryn Overall talks with her about strategy, Venus and how she became known as ‘the colour lady’ of Rangiora. Women who walk into Debbie Albrecht’s fashion retail store ‘Jaks Clothing & Accessories’ usually fall into one of two categories. Either they’ve come to find something a little different at this ontrend fashion destination, or they’ve had a private style consultation with Debbie and are ready to embrace colour and shop their newfound style. It’s impossible to maintain the grey shades of status quo once you meet ‘the colour lady’ of Rangiora. Wearing a bright smile and a vivid melon top, Debbie’s warm welcome rings out over a collection of stylish clothes and chic accessories. A dazzling array of burnt orange, fire-engine red, turquoise, fuchsia, lime green, yellow and royal blue greets the eye. “People have really noticed the difference since I took over in October last year,” says Debbie. “Most fashion retailers will have a range of five or six colours in stock, I have considerably more. When I am buying stock I look for styles, colours and different clothing personalities with Jaks customers – regulars and new ones – in mind. Of course the four seasonal colour palettes are always part of the equation.”

www.venusnetwork.co.nz /p 6

The customers she refers to are not only her regular customers, but also discerning women who shop their newfound style at Jaks after a one-on-one colour or style consultation with Debbie at Colours Plus Image Consulting. Debbie is New Zealand Federation of Image Professionals (NZFIP) certified and accredited. Colours Plus has flourished since its launch in 2008. At the heart of her business is Debbie’s personal mission to free women who are “trapped in black” and introduce them to a world of colour and style. “It’s incredible to witness what happens once a woman sees her own transformation when she embraces colour,” says Debbie. “She walks taller, is happier, more confident. Having your colours done is life-changing and I tell women to be prepared for that. They’ll have complete strangers commenting on how they look; won’t be stressed trying to put outfits together; save time and money - it’s amazing.” And for the skeptical, that’s the voice of experience speaking. The truth is, Debbie didn’t always embrace colour. A decade ago she was a typical corporate executive, clad in monochrome. “My whole wardrobe was navy, grey, white and black,” she says. “That was just what you did - you wore a suit and no colour.” When Debbie unexpectedly found herself in hospital with Legionnaires disease and pneumonia, serious enough that she had to take four months off work, she began rethinking her career. “I’d always had an interest in fashion and clothing. I accepted a part-time position in a clothing store. Not long afterwards the owner asked me whether I’d be interested in ‘having my colours done’ - and it absolutely blew me away.”

www.venusnetwork.co.nz /p 7

The day after discovering she was ‘Spring’, Debbie went shopping. She grabbed two tops she would never have picked out before - one lime green, the other melon. “I clearly remember that moment,” says Debbie. “When I looked in the mirror it almost took my breath away. I looked younger, my skin had a glow. I knew I’d been transformed and had never looked better.” Discovering her ‘colour mojo’ was symbiotically connected to an unfolding evolution in Debbie’s career. “After getting my colours done I was really unsettled at work because I knew I could become more, give more. Embracing colour was part of that journey.” As her journey began to unfold, Debbie went to Tauranga to study to become a certified colour and style consultant. “I was thirsty for knowledge. I had found what I really wanted to do. The experience of having my colours done had been lifechanging for me and I wanted to share it with other women.” And the rest as they say is history.

All the time that she was growing Colours Plus Image Consulting into a thriving business, Debbie had a dream of owning her own fashion store. When the opportunity arose in 2013 to purchase ‘Jaks’ where she’d been consulting as a parttime in-store stylist for three years, Debbie and supportive husband Stephen, seized it with both hands. Whilst it makes total sense for a colour and style consultant to own and operate a fashion retail store, Debbie believes she’s the only woman in New Zealand to do it. “I operate differently to most other fashion stores,” says Debbie. “Most of my Colours Plus clients come to shop at ‘Jaks’ to update their wardrobes. They come in after-hours for a one-on-one shopping session. That’s working really, really well.” Debbie also hosts two fashion shows annually and runs group styling education sessions at ‘Jaks’ - the most popular of which is the ‘Twelve Piece Pack’. “It’s not a KFC value deal,” laughs Debbie. “I select 12 pieces of clothing and show the women how these can be combined to create over 60 outfits. They line up because all women want a wardrobe like that.”

www.venusnetwork.co.nz /p 8

In case you’re wondering if all the panache and colour that represents who Debbie is comes packaged in a chaotic approach to life and business, the answer is “definitely not”. Debbie is highly organised, as strategic as she is stylish, as visionary as she is playful. “I don’t do chaos or ‘fly by the seat of the pants’ well at all. I like structure and systems,” says Debbie. “To strategise comes naturally to me. Having said that I believe that planning and being organised enables me to identify opportunities and trends and how to implement these to ensure business growth and success.” What is currently exciting Debbie most is the imminent image make-over of her retail fashion business. Early in 2015, ‘Jaks Clothing & Accessories’ will be rebranded ‘So You!’ opening in stylish premises in a brand-new retail development on Rangiora’s evolving High Street.

“I joined Venus around 2010 and have found it a true inspiration.”

Debbie’s longer-term plans include starting her own fashion label and opening similar fashion retail stores in selected cities. She’s not in any rush though. “I’m doing it slowly, because I know I’ll burn out otherwise,” says Debbie. “I always plan things four or five months in advance - that’s just how I operate. If I plan things they get done and ticked off the list.” It is testament to Debbie’s organisational skills and her generosity of spirit that she’s also an active Venus member and the longest-standing regional manager across the national Venus network. “I joined Venus around 2010 and have found it a true inspiration. I love the idea of promoting women in business and have found the support and advice from fellow members invaluable. I love structure and Venus gives its members the opportunity to blossom and grow within its structures. I am passionate about supporting and encouraging women to be the best they can be.” Whatever Debbie Albrecht puts her hand or mind to - whether she’s acting as the catalyst in someone’s wardrobe or business evolution - you know you can count on her to do it with generosity and style. www.coloursplus.co.nz

THE

DREAMING ROOM BY VANESSA DAVEY

What will your business look like stunningly successful? Why do you want to build it? Who will be involved? What impact will it have on the world? How do you want to feel as you manage and grow your business? Only after you understand these heart centred things, can you begin to use your head to create a plan that will get you there. The definition of strategy is a long term plan to achieve a desired outcome. In business it’s smart to have plans for your marketing, sales, customer experience, debt management, financials (budgets and sales forecasts) along with your overall business plan, or what I call my Business Map. A Business Map focuses on your heart as much as your head and is a personal picture of your business journey. It involves creating an emotionally exciting picture of what you want – your destination. And then a set of stop overs to enjoy along the way. One of the skills essential in business is the ability to focus. With so many distractions vying for your attention, you need a clear, well thought out and energising plan of how you will grow your business. Without a plan, the tides and winds of business will send you off course and you’ll end up in a destination very different to the one you had originally set sail for.

REVIEWING – DREAMING – PLANNING An experienced business mentor and author of the E-Myth series of books, Michael Gerber calls it “The Dreaming Room”, that place to dream about the vision for your business. One thing I have done intuitively from day one with Venus is to prioritise spending time in the dreaming room, along with the reviewing room and the planning room. Three important spaces for you, as you head into creating plans for your business in 2015. To be successful in business, whatever that looks like for you, involves continually checking in with what’s working and what needs work. This is true for you, your team and your clients and this is your reviewing room. Then it’s entering your dreaming room; your vision, your stunningly successful future, your core desired feelings. And lastly, you enter into your planning room; bringing all this information together to create a clear, specific, realistic and exciting plan, including a destination along with landing points.

LANDING POINTS ALONG YOUR JOURNEY Rather than goals to achieve, I’d rather enjoy and celebrate precious, sweet moments along my journey. Landing points also provide the space to stop, rest, recharge and reassess before heading on - something that I know I have not prioritised on my business journey so far. This coming year I plan to have more regular landing points with a focus on stopping to celebrate my journey. As Ernest Hemingway so beautifully put it “It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters in the end.” Creating your own Business Map will provide you with a clear plan to support you in enjoying your journey.

START WITH YOUR HEART, FOLLOW WITH YOUR HEAD Most plans are a series of objectives or goals. These describe actions to be taken progressively to

complete a process, but what can be overlooked is the inner motivation essential for a plan to succeed. I see clients who are strong in listening to their heart; their passions, feelings, connection with their own desires, prioritising their personal lives. I also see clients who are strong in listening to their head; planning, strategy, financials, prioritising business growth. To grow a sustainable, profitable business you must bring both together. Without the heart stuff you’ll be exhausted and disconnected from your family, your community and yourself. Without the head stuff you’ll be going backwards financially, not charging enough and not focusing long enough on one path. Success, both in the moment and in reaching your destination comes when you listen to your heart, take guidance from your head and then take action.

HOW DO YOU WANT TO FEEL? Feelings are a lot more powerful than thoughts. People buy things because of the feelings they get from doing so. They may use thoughts to rationalise the feelings but it is the feelings that motivate. The same goes for planning. What if, first, you got clear on how you wanted to feel in your life, and then created your business plans? What if your most desired feelings consciously informed how you plan your day, your week and your year? Danielle LaPorte has written a gorgeous book The Desire Map to help you uncover your core desired feelings and plan your life around these. I believe you need to use your core desired feelings in planning your business as well as your life. When you start guiding yourself by caring about how you feel, you start guiding yourself back into your flow. The most successful business plans are not about reaching a goal, they are about enjoying the journey. It’s about savouring moments of intensely sweet joy. It’s not about pushing yourself, but about experiencing yourself. Email me at vanessa@venusnetwork.co.nz for a copy of my Business Map e-guide.

tax on holiday homes By Dawn Liew Director

Owning a holiday home that you rent out to the public during the peak season may not be as lucrative as you think. There are some new tax rules that take effect from the beginning of the 2013/2014 tax year that apply to “mixed use” assets that you need to be aware of. A “mixed use” holiday home is one that is used both for private use and income earning use, and is vacant for 62 days or more in an income year. The IRD allow you an exemption where your income from the income earning use is less than $4,000 p.a. That means that your rental income and expenses are not included in your tax return, so long as the property isn’t owned by a company.

Similarly, a loss from a mixed use asset is quarantined and carried forward when the gross income derived from the asset is less than a threshold of 2% of the cost or value of the asset. Under the new rules, you pay tax on the rent received from income earning use. Expenses are split into three categories: 1. Fully deductible — any expense which relates solely to the income earning use of the holiday home. 2. Not deductible — any expense which relates solely to the private use of the holiday home.

www.venusnetwork.co.nz /p 12

3. Apportioned — where the expenses relate to both income earning use and private use, the expenses are required to be apportioned e.g., rates, insurance, interest on mortgage. In order for your accountant to work out your tax obligations at year end, you will need to keep records showing private use days, income earning days, a breakdown of the expenses paid, the name of the tenants (and their relationship to you) and rents paid. The above is a brief overview of the new mixed use rules as they affect holiday homes. The rules get even more complex when the holiday home is owned by a company or other structure. If you think these changes affect you, then discuss them with your accountant.

LATEST CHANGES TO GST A raft of amendments to GST came through in June, clarifying grey areas and closing loopholes from some of the major changes of the last few years. In broad brush, these include: • a new wash-up rule in the GST apportionment rules applies when use of an asset changes to 100% taxable or

Are you paying more tax than you need to?

100% non-taxable use when usage has previously been split between private and commercial use. Depending on the change, there may be output tax to pay back • residential units in retirement villages or rest homes where occupants live independently now come under GST-exempt supplies • the backdating effect of the tax residency rules has been removed for GST purposes • the definition of ‘hire purchase agreement’ now includes any contract with an option to purchase • where an employee is engaged by a third party to be a director or board member, and required to remit fees from the third party to their employer, there is a new flow-through rule which means the employer will be treated as supplying services to the third party • non-profit bodies can claim all GST input deductions other than those relating to the making of exempt supplies Please contact us if you’d like to run through whether the changes affect you.

Part Two By Jen Tyson

Learn key techniques to help you enjoy and be more successful during your sales conversations. If you’re in business, you are a sales person. To help you understand where sales sits with marketing; marketing is all that you do to communicate your message in the world; sales involves the conversations you have with people interested in buying from you. The goal of sales is to get a resounding “yes” or “no” from each conversation. To help you get more yes’s I have shared three key parts to selling; positive closes, the sales process and understanding your conversation rate. THE ART OF CLOSING Recently I was having a conversation with a business owner about her sales process. When I asked her if she had been asking her prospects for the sale, she laughed and said, “That is the one question I forget to ask.” She is not alone. I have found that even when business owners become natural at building rapport and are confident in showing the prospective client where they can help solve their issues, they stop and forget to ask that one key question that closes everything off. I have had to learn the art of closing, and you can learn it too. What I had to get over was the fear of appearing pushy or hearing “no”. I suggest you choose one positive close for your sales conversations from the list below. POSITIVE CLOSES FOR YOU You’ve done a great job at the sales conversation and your prospect is keen to buy from you. All that’s left is to help them decide the time/colour/flavour or date. Here are some examples to try in your business: • “When would you like to set up your first appointment with me Mary?” • “After understanding your needs better I know I can help you, when would you like to get started?” • “When would you like to book your appointment with us?” • “We are getting quite full up between now and Christmas; I have a few spaces left I can squeeze you in; how does ... sound to you?” • “I am glad you enjoyed the sample, just imagine getting those results every day. What flavour/ colour would you like to order?” • “What colour would you like to get today?” If after all that, they still say “I want to think about it”, then I suggest saying something like this: “No problem, I am tricky to get hold of sometimes so how about I give you a ring in say a week?” When you get an agreed time frame, write it in your diary and make sure you follow up. If you do not hear from them or are able to talk to them after a couple of follow up calls, I suggest you then leave the ball in their court and move on.

UNDERSTAND YOUR SALES PROCESS Every business has a sales process. This is a simple process you take prospects through for them to become clients. When you clarify what your sales process is, you’ll feel more confident and be more prepared for these conversations. When someone who doesn’t know you at all, first comes across your business. The person sees your flyer, they ring and talk Example to you, you have a conversation about their needs and your possible solutions, they attend a complimentary consultation/ session with you, and then they say “yes I want to work with you”, or “no I don’t.” This sales process has five stages. Understanding your stages helps you know where your marketing messages and sales conversations are working and where they are not. NOTE: In some cases people skip some of the steps because they know you, or have come highly recommended by someone. UNDERSTAND YOUR CONVERSION RATE It is important to know how many people say “yes” and how many say “no”, out of every four people you talk with. This is called your conversation rate; the number of people you convert to clients out of the total number of conversations you have.

Example

If you have a personal conversation with four potential clients and two say “yes please”, this means you have a 50% conversion rate. This is very high in business. It is more common to have one out of five say “yes”.

When you understand this part of selling, you realise not all conversations will end in a “no”. You can start looking forward to the “no’s” because you realise you are that much closer to your next “yes”. What I want you to get here is to not dwell on or make it mean anything negative when you here a “no thanks.” Selling is an art that you can learn and become successful at. I encourage you to write down your sales process, have a clear closing question and find out your conversation rate. These tools will help you to really shine as saleswoman. Be bold, be you, be willing to learn, have fun and practice, practice, practice.

SUPPORTING PARENTS THROUGH BUMP, BIRTH AND BEYOND CAROLYN TRANTER

Store owner & Doula Baby Beginnings 66 George Street, Palmerston North

KIA ORA CAROLYN. COULD YOU TELL US WHAT IT IS YOU PROVIDE AT BABY BEGINNINGS? I aim to provide a one stop shop providing anything for pregnancy and new parents. The retail side has all the gorgeous gifts needed and I also offer my doula service, to help support parents through this special time. NOW I HADN’T HEARD OF A DOULA UNTIL I MET YOU, COULD YOU EXPLAIN WHAT THIS IS EXACTLY? A doula is a birth and post-natal support person. I provide physical, emotional and informational support for my clients; a doula does not do anything medical — that is the role of the midwife. Basically, I’m an aunty, but an aunty with a knowledge base. I’m here to give my clients a shoulder to cry on or vent to, as well as celebrate with them. With everyone having so much work these days, it’s not as easy to have all of your aunties around to share their experiences. It’s great that you provide this for your clients any time.

Photography and interview by Tessa Russell. Wellington & Palmerston North Portrait Photographer. Member of Palmerston North Venus. www.facebook.com/MoemoeaCollective

WHAT EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE AS A DOULA? I’ve been working as a doula for 25 years. I chose to certify through Doma International, an organisation that specialises in doula training only. I have to re-certify every three years to be qualified and up to date. I ended up loving it so much I went to the U.S and am now able to train doulas in New Zealand. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO OPEN A STORE AS WELL AS BEING A DOULA? It actually wasn’t something I had thought about before. My daughter was working in this store for the previous owner and was upset that they were closing down and she told me about it, then I started wondering how much it actually was to take over the store, next thing I had moved in. I was so happy with my decision and now I feel my business has a home. I’m sure some pregnant women who come into the shop think I’m crazy though because I always make sure they have a midwife and know about local antenatal classes.

VENUS SUCCESS FEATURE

I love that “cover all the bases” kind of customer service. WHAT’S YOUR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR SOMEONE LOOKING TO START THEIR OWN BUSINESS? NETWORK! It’s incredibly challenging doing it all by yourself, so network with others and learn from their experiences. Also, a business coach is priceless. Lastly, make sure you always celebrate your successes, even the everyday little ones like hitting your sales target for the day. WHY DID YOU JOIN VENUS? I have belonged to many local women in business networking groups over the years and found them to be more what I would call social networking. I was invited to Venus and fell in love with the professional, structured, results focused meetings. It’s an organisation that has the true heart of networking through RAVE’s and referrals.

WHAT GROWTH HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED SINCE JOINING VENUS? Where do I start! I have been very ‘gently’ stretched in many areas. Through the meetings, I am now more confident in speaking to a group of people about my business and through this have gained a lot of clarity surrounding what my passion and core business actually is. As the Venus Regiona Manager for the Manawatu, I have gained so many skills in business building and management, all of which have such a huge impact on my own business growth. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO NEW VENUS MEMBERS? Take advantage of every opportunity that Venus offers you, attend EVERY meeting, RAVE and refer and make the time to join in with events and activities that HQ have on offer. Really get to know the ladies in your group. Share your passion for your business and really listen to them, have an attitude of abundance — there is more than enough to go around and through sharing we all benefit in so many ways.

VENUS BUSINESS EXPERT Employment law

PROTECTING YOUR ONLINE REPUTATION

Social networking websites can affect a person’s ability to secure employment or for business owners to secure a business tender or contract. Many corporate and government departments use social media to check out those tendering for work, including looking at the sites of business owners. Potential candidates for positions, or business owners tendering for work, are often rejected as a result of information viewed on their Facebook, Bebo or MySpace sites. Employers and those responsible for securing tenders for business say they are concerned about “excess alcohol abuse, ethics or job disrespect” of those they view. Unsuitable photos or videos may also raise concerns about a candidate’s or business owner’s lifestyle. What does your personal social media profile look like? Have you checked out the social media profiles of your team? However, reputation can also have a positive effect. Reliable statistics and my own experience show many business owners and those awarding tenders and business contracts are influenced by a positive online reputation to some extent. Thus a positive online social media presence is important for employees and business owners.

Tips for managing your online social media presence to protect your reputation and to assist with avoiding social media guilt syndrome include: 1. BE MINDFUL OF THE SITES YOU WISH TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH Make smart choices. Do your homework and choose the best sites for your needs. Do not choose sites that may have inappropriate associations for your business. Limit the number of sites you are involved with. Once you have made your choice, stick to what you have decided, and review this decision only once a year, at a scheduled time. As a business owner, your time is money and you do not want to waste time on ineffective sites or going back over your decision about what sites your business will use. Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter appear to be safe options for business owners from a time and reputation perspective.

2. BE MINDFUL OF THE IDENTITY YOU ADOPT ONLINE Make wise choices about the name you use and what you post. Do not post information that is misleading or dishonest. Check out the online identities of your team that may link back to your business. Are you happy with what you see? Seek professional advice if you lack confidence in your ability to post a suitable online profile for you or your team. This will be money well spent. Hopefully many people will view this information time and time again. LinkedIn is considered to be the number one business to business only networking site in the world; is open for networking 24/7; and is a robust database of prospective clients.

3. BE MINDFUL ABOUT THOSE YOU ASSOCIATE WITH

Make wise choices about those you adopt as your online friends and associates. Talk to your team about their associates and friends. Value quality over quantity. Do not underestimate the power of reputation by association. People and businesses will make judgement calls about you based on who you are associated with.

Have things all gone a bit pear shaped? Need help with staffing issues?

4. BE MINDFUL OF THE CONTENT YOU POST Photos, videos and comments posted in haste may well become a source of concern and have a long-term impact on your reputation. If you are unsure, do not post. Make sure you are aware of what your team is posting about you and/or your business. Have you taken steps to manage your team’s social media communications? 5. IF YOU ARE A BUSINESS OWNER, TAKE STEPS TO MANAGE YOUR TEAM

Family Action

Child Alert

I migrated to New Zealand in 2001. I have 20 years’ experience as a registered mental health nurse eventually moving into health management in 2006. I transferred to the family violence and abuse sector in 2008 as CEO of a not for profit that later became Family Action. I am passionate about making sure clients get the very best service and are able to make the most of opportunities that become available to gain healthy, rewarding and safe lives. Family Action encourages women and children to achieve their potential and I am proud to be a part of that work. Family Action was created by the merger of two respected and well known West Auckland agencies. Together the agencies have provided sexual violence, trauma and family violence services for over 30 years. Our vision is Whānau toa — strong flourishing families. Our mission is Safety, Restoration and Renewal. We provide a caring confidential place where people can talk about their problems and how they affect their relationships, themselves and their children. We employ 25 professional and qualified women. Our services are available to everyone regardless of ability to pay. Care and safety of our clients and their children are our priority.

I was born and raised in Zimbabwe and moved to New Zealand in 2000. Over the past 14 years, I have had the wonderful privilege of working with organisations, such as ECPAT, who have a special focus on the protection and well-being of children. CSEC is an abhorrent and overwhelming issue, yet I draw hope and inspiration from networks, such as Venus, who are willing to support us and to combat and keep the spotlight on an evil that does such harm to children. The wonderful Parnell Venus group has raised $5350 for ECPAT through a generous donation from Mind Power and a fund-raising dinner. Thank you ladies! ECPAT’s vision is for a world that no longer tolerates the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC). We work with a global network of ECPAT organisations to eliminate child prostitution, child pornography and the trafficking of children, and to ensure that children everywhere enjoy their fundamental rights, free and secure from all forms of sexual exploitation. So is CSEC a problem in New Zealand? Sadly, the answer is yes. Figures from 2008 estimated about 200 children under 18 were involved in prostitution. Of particular concern is the alarming rise of New Zealanders accessing child pornography on the Internet with records showing over 12 million page clicks each year and over 30,000 page clicks per day on identified illegal child sex abuse images.

YOU ARE EXCEPTIONAL AT MANIFESTING BY VANESSA DAVEY

W

e are always creating/manifesting that which we are believing. It comes down to beliefs and all the stories we tell ourselves to be true. You are ALWAYS manifesting and creating your world. Look at someone who is unhappy and dissatisfied with their life. Do they keep experiencing more of that? YES! They are exceptional at manifesting too, but just not in a good way. They manifest more of what they believe, which is that life is dissatisfying. As humans, it isn’t possible to turn our manifesting switch on and off. If you see people who you think are exceptionally talented at manifesting good things, take another look. Are they positive and in flow? Are they manifesting amazing positive things in their life? YES! And where does the manifesting come from? Our beliefs. Our beliefs tucked away nicely in our brains show through our thoughts, through our feelings, our actions and ultimately the results that we see in our life. Beliefs > thoughts > feelings > actions > results. WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE BELIEVING? Take a look at what you have in your life. Look at what you have created. Is there an area of your life where you would like to see a change? 1

Choose the area of your life you want to change, to have a different result in.

Ask yourself “What do I believe about this situation?” Another way to find out a belief is to ask: “What am I making up about this?” Be really honest with yourself. I’ve found that it’s not useful to say ‘I don’t know’. This is a victim mentality because it doesn’t put the power to change in your hands. Instead of uncovering what you are believing you may stay unsure or confused. If you’re not yet sure what you are believing then I suggest you say ‘I’m not yet sure, but it’s coming to me’. 2

Write what you are believing on paper. And just for kicks look at it as though it’s a story you are telling yourself (your belief). Bear with me here, just for more kicks let’s say that it’s not the truth, for now it’s a story you have been telling yourself. Try on for size that you’ve made it up as fact or you have listened to someone else saying it’s fact. You can either listen to me on this or not. It’s up to you as to whether you want to manifest more of what you love in your life or have life stay the same. 3

4

Ask yourself what you really want. Get very specific. Be very clear about what you want.

Now create a story or a belief that supports what you want to change in your life. Write this new belief down and then put it on your wall in your office and on your fridge, the places that you’ll see every day. 5

Take small actions as though your new belief is true. “Act as if” this belief is actually the truth. This is a powerful way to change your belief in your brain. The actions will alter your brain make-up and create new neural pathways to bed in your new belief. 6

MY BUSINESS STORY

Melissa Percival Peak Nutrition & Training www.peaknutrition.co.nz Parnell Venus Group

Penny Barrett Nip-Tuck Cosmetic Surgery Ltd www.nip-tuckcosmeticsurgery.com Ponsonby Venus Group

Peak Nutrition and Training is a place where nutrition and training come together to provide you with the best holistic health approach for you.

When I started Nip-Tuck Cosmetic Surgery Ltd in 2012, I was taking a leap of faith; medical tourism was not a common concept in New Zealand at the time. But having had first-hand experience of my own personal surgery in Thailand, I came away from that experience totally convinced that what was being offered in Thailand was far superior to anything in New Zealand, and at a fraction of the cost.

At 14 years old I played tennis for New Zealand and was always into sports and health. I have worked as a Nutritionist for 12 years. I have always had a passion for fitness and wanted to make money and help people in doing what I love. What I love about running my own business is that there are no set hours. I have a greater degree of selfsatisfaction and it’s both more challenging and exciting as everything is your own. Some of my biggest challenges have involved setting time aside for my own goals, ensuring I am paying myself what I am worth and selling myself. The lessons I have learned along the way include needing great systems in place, having a backup hard drive or saving everything to the cloud. And don’t rush into anything, make sure it is done professionally and properly.

Over the years I had seen friends and relatives suffer because surgery they needed was too expensive, they had no medical insurance, or they were left on a public hospital waiting list. Starting a business from scratch and without peers in the industry was daunting. I wasn’t sure where to begin. I started with a business mentor, who helped me initially. Once she had helped me with this I was ready to launch and decided that I needed to join a networking group.

Within Venus I have had the opportunity to learn from the other women. I’ve been able to give and receive advice, ideas and skills that have helped me develop. The advice I would have given myself when I first started out would be to remember to always be open to suggestions and be flexible to grow.

When I started with Venus I was unsure of how it could help me. But I knew it was important to meet with likeminded business people for inspiration, friendship and support. I know now where Venus is unique in the market, it not only delivers on the referrals, it fills the need for support and friendship. Up until joining, I had felt like an island, working in my business without any outside help.

BY NICOLA REILLY, FOREVERFIT.TV

9 things healthy people do every day Good health doesn’t just happen. It requires consistent effort over time. Once you have put in that consistent effort, those actions then become habits and become easier to accomplish. My goal with foreverfit is to provide you with the tools to achieve real health. Here are the top nine things that those people I surround myself with, who are living great lives do.

1. Create a plan and follow it If you just let your day unfold according to other people, you have a day that is on other people’s schedules before you know it. Anyone who is leading a foreverfit life has a plan, they know when and at what time exercise happens, they know what jobs need to be done today, and they are striving and aiming for things each week and month to be better.

2. Move More They are aware that movement builds energy. They are aware that if they have sat in a car or at a desk for too long they need to reverse that, so they exercise. They are constantly aware of how much movement they need to be doing to remain healthy.

I love the saying that you are a sum of the five people that you surround yourself with. While I believe this to be true, and while I would love to be surrounded by the Richard Bransons and Oprah Winfreys of the world, I am happy to surround myself with people I admire in both the online and offline space. I do this by listening to great podcasts. I follow people with businesses I admire and my friends are those that support and encourage me on this journey. One thing that I have learnt from these amazing people is the importance of having daily habits and rituals. Whether you are growing a business, being a healthy role model for your children or losing weight, it’s about daily habits and routines.

3. Set goals They spend time visualising and setting themselves new goals. They regularly set themselves new goals and reassess old goals.

4. Practise mindfulness or meditation They find time in their day where they meditate to help reduce anxiety and stress. They use the power of gratitude and a daily journal to get themselves in the right frame of mind each and every day.

5. Eat real food They eat real food. They make food from whole, real nutrient dense ingredients and they base their diet around natural ingredients. They aren’t afraid of the kitchen. They learn to cook and they make cooking a part of their life. They are aware of what ingredients are hidden in packaged processed foods, whether it is gluten, sugar or additives and preservatives. They know that if they want to lose weight and feel great they need to know what is going into their own bodies.

6. Good quality sleep Sleep is vital for health. Your body physiologically repairs between the hours of 2am and 6am; getting enough sleep helps you to be happier during the day. Healthy people create a regular sleep schedule. They set evening routines to prompt the production of melatonin and help the body unwind.

7. Do things they love Healthy people take time out to do things they really love. They have a hobby or a sport that allows them to pull away from the day to day stresses of life and get in the zone, where they are fully present. They understand that participating in a hobby or a sport helps improve productivity, focus, memory and learning. Plus it makes them smile and the act of smiling improves their mood, improves their immune system and decreases stress.

8. Get outside They make sure that each and every day they get outside and soak up natural light and fresh air.

9. They listen to their body They monitor their own health. They take rest days when they are tired and they train hard when they are energised. They remain active each and every day around that.

BUSINESS WOMEN PANEL BELINDA FALCONAR DRION NZ WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO BUSINESS PLANNING? My business planning methods are unorthodox! I rely heavily on my intuition and creativity and visualise what I would like to happen; I’m always open to new opportunities. I find that things seem to manifest themselves in ways that I couldn’t actually have planned better. HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR PLAN RELEVANT ? To keep me engaged and focused, my plan needs to inspire me. It needs to be flexible and achievable. Being new to this business, there are always unforeseen issues to be dealt with. It has been a huge learning curve importing and marketing a new product, and educating end users about its benefits. I review my goals on a weekly basis and I ask myself “What can I do this week that will be the best contribution to myself and my business?” WHAT ARE YOUR THREE KEY SUCCESS FACTORS OF BUSINESS PLANNING? 1. Staying open to new opportunities. They may change our plan entirely. 2. Being flexible — things don’t always happen exactly how I think they will, and often manifest in ways that are beyond what I thought was possible! 3. Think big! We are only limited by our thinking. Seeing things from an abundance perspective is essential. www.drion.co.nz Wellington South Venus Group

This issue we asked our Facebook community what they thought of Strategy in business we’ve shared the first four women who answered our question.

MARY KATER MAURICE TRAPP WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO BUSINESS PLANNING? It’s important for me to set monthly, quarterly and annual goals. This keeps me on track with where I’m at. Focus is key, so I have little reminders to keep me on task. These reminders make me think “Am I doing what I should to achieve my goals?” If not, it’s time to reset. It’s not a bad thing to have to reset, as life is full of challenges, unexpected surprises and events that can change your path. This is where an ongoing review system is essential, to ensure that despite those little things that life brings, you are able to stay focused on the ultimate outcome of your goal. HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR PLAN RELEVANT ? Goals change all the time. It’s very much part of life. I think the key is to stay flexible, open and honest with yourself and your business. This provides you with the ability to adjust quickly to change and to refocus on your plan. Its relevance is to your goal, whether it’s still the same you started with or your revised plan. FIONA HALL KIFFIN

ANGE LLOYD OAK COACHING WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO BUSINESS PLANNING? When you have sourced your passion and work with it, it’s not like work at all. You intuitively follow a business plan without even knowing that’s what’s happening. You set your goals for the coming 6 –12months, not three years. You know you will grow and your business will grow if you are guided by your passion.

WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO BUSINESS PLANNING? When I started my business in 2003, I started writing my business manual to help me look at what kind of business I wanted to create. I set up an organisational chart and my name was in 95 percent of the spots! I now review my business products and services six monthly and use this as a starting point for looking at my strategy and marketing plans.

HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR PLAN RELEVANT ? Review, review, review and then review. Grasp opportunities that align with my plan, keep up to date with the latest trends in my specific field and look for opportunities that allow me to grow as a person and as a business owner, to me your plan always has to be relevant to who you are as a business owner for it to be successful. Looking for opportunities always encourages growth.

HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR PLAN RELEVANT ? I keep my plans relevant in a one page plan so it is easy to access. I find having to explain my plans to others keeps me accountable to taking action! I have used business coaches to help me with my plans and I now use a series of colleagues with complimentary skill sets to help me keep on track and fine tune my plans. We do the same for each thing for each other. Knowing my core business/personal values helps me plan where to next. It also allows me to say “Hell yes!” to an opportunity or a firm “NO thanks” with confidence.

WHAT ARE YOUR THREE KEY SUCCESS FACTORS OF BUSINESS PLANNING? 1. Source your passion – once you have found your passion, you have the energy and commitment to grow and develop your business. 2. Do not focus your business on all of your qualifications, training and experience as you will find it very difficult to identify a specific niche. You cannot be everything to everyone. 3. Position yourself as an expert. When you are passionate about your business, you get to know your clients very well. You need to create an Avatar, the ideal client, and become an expert on their problems, desires and biggest concerns.

WHAT ARE YOUR THREE KEY SUCCESS FACTORS OF BUSINESS PLANNING? 1. There is nothing like having to explain yourself succinctly to someone else to get you to think through your plans. 2. HOW WELL PROTECTED ARE YOU?

Many of you have spent an enormous amount of time, energy and money to establish the business you have today. For most of you, it would be your pride and joy so you give it your all in making it a success. Today, most business owners are engrossed in the day to day running of their business or maintaining the level of success of the business. They often don’t give enough thought on the business running without them. This is where they are exposing themselves to financial risk. IMPORTANCE OF HAVING RISK COVER FOR YOUR BUSINESS/ YOU The key to eliminating financial risk in your business is to often step back and think where your business is heading. Do you have a succession plan on the business or your role in it? Are you the “Key Person” in your business? Have you given enough thought on how the business would operate in your absence? What impact would it have on your business? Like many small business owners in New Zealand, we often don’t place enough importance in making sure the right plan of action is in place, for the future of your business and your family.

www.venusnetwork.co.nz /p 32

KEY PERSON COVER This is a vital component for most businesses, whether you are operating as a one man band or in a partnership/ shareholder situation. For business cover, key person provides the funds to protect the business, if the key person is taken out of the picture temporarily, suffers a severe disability or a permanent disability.

It is important to understand what cover works best for you. A yearly review with your insurance adviser is highly recommended for them to understand your circumstances and your needs. Most of us imagine these to be a rather time consuming exercise; however, there is no time well spent then spending time knowing that you have the “peace of mind” when it comes to financial protection for your business and your loved ones.

Cover is available for you to either find replacement in your absence, revenue protection or debt protection. The purpose of this cover is to provide a lump sum that gives the business the ability to acquire a replacement person to keep your business functioning, contribute towards the loss of revenue that would be experienced as a result of the key person being away from work or to keep your creditors at bay and take care of the debt. INCOME PROTECTION COVER This helps protect one of the most important assets your ability to earn income. It pays a percentage of your income, depending on the type of cover you choose, when you don’t have the capacity to work as a result of an illness or injury. There are two types of income protection cover. An indemnity cover and an agreed value cover. These covers come with many options on payment terms ranging.

Both websites were launched over the last year, while in between, the Lime-Red team has confidently carried on with their growing volume of client work and factored in a company move. There’s no stopping the Lime-Red team, with plans already underway to expand their community projects. The region’s locals remain the all-important key focus for the team. With most clients locally-based in Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt and Wellington, helping local business is at the core of the design team’s work.

MEMBER FEATURE

The team are extremely passionate about making sure they hit the mark with their client’s target audience and believe making their clients “look the business” is the key to making their clients wealthy. The staff don’t simply perform their jobs, they understand the nature of what their clients are striving to achieve. If the design team doesn’t think something a client suggests will make a return on their investment, they’re not afraid to say so and will use their expertise to offer up new ideas that will get the all-important monetary return for clients that is so crucial for businesses. Lime-Red Design specialises in branding, and produces websites, logos, flyers and booklets, all designed in order to target a client’s particular market.

Each project gets the same dedicated focus and enthusiasm from the design team, which naturally comes from having talented staff who love what they do. If you have an idea you want putting into action, talk it through with Hayley. You’re sure to get more ideas on top and rest assured, your finished product will look amazing too.

BOUNDARY BOOTCAMP Boundaries are an essential part of social interaction and we all have them. But all too often they are one of the core problems in our relationships with friends, ourselves, family, co-workers and our beloveds.

WHAT EXACTLY ARE ESSENTIAL “BOUNDARIES”? They enable personal awareness of what you will and won’t accept. They allow for understanding of what you are un/comfortable with. They warn you when you are detracting from, or living outside of your values. They act as both self-protection and a warning system. They are both internal and external. Boundaries teach people how to treat you and influence what others expect from you. They also impose limits, not just on others but also upon the self — to ensure that you don’t place yourself in dangerous situations or continue being treated in a way that detracts from your contentment and growth. Boundaries can also hold you back from living more fully or following your passions when they are set by others, too rigid or imposed out of fear. If you imagine that every single one of us on this planet has our own invisible electric fence, which we may have completely switched off, left with glaring gaps or set it way too high we’re and frying anyone who comes near. This electric fence is our boundary.

BY CAROLINE WILLIAMS

The first step is developing your own personal awareness of boundaries. To start, ask yourself these questions. Remember to be as honest as you can and give examples.

SELF-AWARENESS QUESTIONS Do you have a hard time standing up for yourself in clear and compassionate ways? Do you take things too personally and feel responsible for other’s feelings, actions or well-being? Do you find yourself repeating unhealthy relationship patterns? Do you tolerate rude comments or pushy people because you find conflict hard to deal with? Do you set yourself tasks/goals/deadlines and fall short of them? To free yourself from the “disease to please”, you must develop self-awareness, which is the first step in allowing yourself to be accountable for your own happiness. Now is a great time to start working on creating your own boundaries; here are three questions to ask yourself. Try and give at least five examples in each.

People may not…

I have the right to...

To protect my time and energy it is ok to…

It’s normal to have people push our boundaries and to experience some discomfort, but if we have a boundary pattern that is consistently being triggered or crossed then we need to look at how healthy our boundaries are and also check whether we are reinforcing them. One analogy is ‘The Broken Window’, which is when signs of personal boundary vandalism go unrepaired and ongoing unmanaged ‘crime’ takes place. If we leave the ‘window’ broken then ‘vandalism’ occurs more often. We also need to address why/ who/what is breaking our boundaries and make changes. Tools for reinforcing boundaries can include: - Setting them but letting go of expectations or guilt - Not justifying, debating, blaming or over-explaining - Backing them up with consequences or actions

By Sheryl Nicholson www.thehuiatree.com It’s all very well deciding to eat healthy but unless you have some ideas on what to create and the ingredients on hand, it can prove to be a challenge! I have started a HEALTHY ME series to share with you what sort of food I create regularly, allowing me to eat healthy more easily. In the HEALTHY ME series, I will cover simple breakfast, lunch, dinner, sauces and dressing recipes that I use often to help me keep on track. I use organic ingredients whenever possible, or at least source local ingredients because I know where they are grown and how fresh they are. I always use fresh herbs. I can’t imagine a meal without them, to be honest, and they are the easiest plants to grow. At the end of each HEALTHY ME recipe, I list the essential items you need in your fridge and pantry. These meals are created out of ingredients that are always really useful to have on hand. That way, once you are used to making more healthy food for yourself, you will find it easier to know what to buy when you do your food shopping – it’s about developing new healthy habits.

HEALTHYME SHOPPING ESSENTIALS Pumpkin or buttercup Organic eggs Courgette Mushrooms Tomatoes Feta Fennel seeds Cumin powder Basil Italian parsley Balsamic vinegar Olive oil

Frittata is an awesome meal in one. In this recipe, the sweetness of the buttercup is delicious with the cumin and fennel. Feel free to add any of your favourite vegetables to your frittata. I often eat vegetarian because I believe it’s better for you and I like the creativity and flavours that go into making a vegetarian meal. Enjoy.

ROAST PUMPKIN FRITATTA Serves 2-3 1/4 pumpkin, sliced into wedges (I’ve used buttercup) 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds 1 teaspoon of cumin powder 3 tablespoons of olive oil 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar 6 organic eggs 1 large courgette, sliced 5 button mushrooms, sliced 8 cherry tomatoes, halved 2 spring onions, sliced 100 grams of feta, crumbled A good handful of fresh basil leaves A good handful of Italian parsley, roughly chopped Preheat the oven to 200 degrees celsius. Line two small baking dishes with baking paper. In one, place the sliced pumpkin, drizzle with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, sprinkle with the fennel seeds and cumin powder, season with salt and pepper. Place in the oven and bake for 30–40 minutes until soft and golden brown. In the other baking dish, place the tomatoes and drizzle with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, the balsamic vinegar and season with salt and pepper. Place in the oven and bake for 30–40 minutes until soft and golden brown. Chop the pumpkin into chunks, I leave the skin on but you may prefer to remove it. The tomatoes may be ready sooner so just remove from the oven and set aside. Whisk the eggs together in a bowl. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a fry pan and add the sliced courgette and mushrooms, cook for a few minutes on a high heat until golden brown. Add the pumpkin chunks and pour over the whisked eggs. Turn the heat down to low, add the roast tomatoes, spring onion and crumbled feta. Cook gently until the egg starts to firm up on the surface (about 10 minutes). Place under a hot grill to brown for a few minutes. Season with salt and cracked pepper. Serve in wedges for lunch or dinner with fresh basil and parsley.

Make your life easier with Systems

Systems are simple, logical ways to do things that help you live a life that works for you and build a business you love to work in.

Setting up systems can lead to an easier and more enjoyable life. This can be done easily now with the support of great tools found on our smartphones and computers.

When you are a one person business you tend to carry a lot of information around in your head about how you do things. It can be stressful trying to remember all these things.

HOW TO CREATE A SYSTEM 1. Identify something that frustrates you or that you avoid doing (for example, following up sales calls) 2. Use the five questions below to start creating your system

Add interruptions from phone calls, checking emails, family commitments, and we start to forget to complete things or follow through on what we said we would do.

WHO is involved? Who is involved in this system? Does each person understand the impact they have on the next person in the system?

WHY do you do it that way? Why does it need to be done, and done a certain way? How does it support your business values, vision and mission?

WHEN does it need to happen? When do the tasks need to be completed? Do you have time constraints? What urgency do they have? Are there deadlines to meet?

HOW is it done specifically — step by step? How does it need to be actioned? This is where we get specific. Step by step actions to complete a task. (This is a great way to start creating your business operations manual).

WHAT supporting software, documents or systems are involved?

What needs to be done? Thinking about the things that need be done and allocating the time to do it is setting up a system for yourself. Do you have preparation time for your Venus meetings booked into your calendar as a reoccurring appointment?

PULLOUT BUSINESS RESOURCE

Tasks to delegate Print this out, put it beside your computer and over the next fortnight make a note of each task you do on the list that it applies to. At the end of this time see if there is a way you can delegate any or all of the tasks that you avoid. These tasks will be draining your energy and you’ll not be playing to your stregnths. If you can’t delgate now, create a plan or a timeframe for when you can delegate.

What I love to do... it energises me when I do this...

What bores me... or I avoid doing...

Time saver systems

1. When working on a task that requires your total focus, turn off all distractions, phones, emails etc. 2. Notice your most productive times of the day for creative work and start to block this out in your calendar. 3. Create lists, then do the hard tasks first. Those hard tasks that are not completed clutter your mind and distract you till they are done. 4. Block or chunk similar tasks. For example, use Monday mornings for your sales and client follow-up calls. 5. Record all your tasks in your calendar so that you can see how you are spending your time. For example, exercise, sales target review, Facebook posts etc. 6. Create templates for repeat email communications (do get them reviewed by a good copywriter). 7. Record a voice message which informs clients when you will be returning their calls. Set realistic time frames for returning calls. Suggestion: “within 24 hours during work days”. 8. Set up an automatic email responder that details you are in meetings and will return emails or calls within xxx hours. 9. At the beginning of a new client engagement, set expectations for your client about how you will communicate with them. Ask what their preferred communication method is. This makes it easier to chunk your time and be more productive. 10. In the notes section of your calendar appointment, write the agenda for each meeting/phone call.
