Brazilian Publishers Created in 2008, the Brazilian Publishers project in the Brazilian publishing market resulted from an agreement between the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil). The objective of the initiative is to promote the Brazilian publishing industry in the global market. In order to meet this objective the project works to promote export of services, content and products through actions ranging from those focusing on publisher empowerment to those designed to promote sale of author’s rights, books and participation in fairs and international events. In addition to fostering exports, the activities of the project contribute toward positioning the country internationally, showing the world the Brazilian capacity to create technical, literary and scientific content of great importance to the international information and communications market. The goal is to show other countries the characteristics of a country with a modern economy and advanced scientific production capabilities, thereby skillfully contributing to increase exports and develop a positive image of Brazil. In these three years Brazilian Publishers improved publishers’ access to the external market and more than 250 titles were licensed abroad. Dolores (Dosh) Manzano Executive Project Manager

Brazilian Book Chamber The Brazilian Book Chamber - CBL is a non-profit organization that has been working for over 60 years in order to promote both actions that allow free access to books and the diffusion of reading, aiming at expanding the Brazilian publishing market. Through punctual actions and a permanent dialogue with stakeholders, CBL has guaranteed its members significant representation alongside public administration and private initiative, facilitating the democratic access to practices that can benefit books and reading in Brazil. CBL is also the sole body responsible for administering the Jabuti Award which has been the greatest and most important Brazilian literary award for over 53 years. Its goal is to acknowledge the talent of publishers, authors, cover designers, illustrators, translators, graphic producers and designers, all of them significant drivers within the production chain book. Noted for its excellence and for always keeping in mind the growth of its members, CBL promotes, supports and encourages fairs and events on behalf of books and reading across Brazil; CBL organizes training and professional improvement programs besides providing essential information and guidance services. CBL members periodically receive Panorama Editorial, a print magazine containing articles and opinion by important names from the literary world. Our electronic newsletter, CBL Informa, issued biweekly, offers updates in a light and reader-friendly format, and the CBL website (www.cbl.org.br) has two roles it is the key to our relationship with members, who can get access to exclusive content and services, and it makes CBL known among sympathizers from the publishing world. In order to facilitate Brazilian publisher access to global markets, CBL created the Brazilian Publishers project, along with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency - Apex-Brasil. Thanks to this initiative, publishers can take their brands and publications to the leading book fairs worldwide, enabling them to explore new markets and get visibility and recognition, attesting to the quality of Brazilian publishers and books. Bringing Brazilian books closer to readers worldwide Fundação Biblioteca Nacional (National Library Foundation), linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Culture, is the largest library in Latin America. The institution has created in 2012 the International Book Center (Centro Internacional do Livro – CIL), an agency responsible for the promotion of Brazilian literature and books worldwide. The Brazilian government plans to invest R$ 76 million (approximately US$ 37 million) in different international actions by 2020. Following the enhancement of the Program for Supporting the Translation and Publishing of Brazilian Authors Abroad in 2011, mostly for literary fiction, the Center launches in 2012 new programs to strengthen its actions: a translation program for STM books, a funding program for supporting the publication of Brazilian titles in the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), a residency program for foreign translators and a travel grants program for Brazilian authors. In order to apply for a grant, foreign publishers must present a Brazilian title for translation or reissue in print, e-book or both. Different commissions will meet on a regular basis to evaluate the projects. The maximum grant offer is US$ 8.000 (and US$ 6.000 for the CPLP program). For more information, visit www.bn.br/translationgrant or write to cil@bn.br. Targeted actions and activities are underway to help bring Brazilian literature closer to readers all around the world. These include reinforced presence at major literary events such as Bogotá International Book Fair, where Brazil was the Guest of Honor this year, Frankfurt Book Fair, where Brazil will be the Guest of Honor in 2013, and Bologna Children’s Book Fair, where Brazil will be the Guest of Honor in 2014. These are valuable opportunities for authors and publishers to reach an international readership. Authors will be able to draw worldwide attention to their works, while publishers will have their books showcased at international level.

a passion for reading. Pursuant to the writer Alberto Manguel, “The act of reading brings back voices from the past, sometimes carrying them long into the future, where we might be able to use them in courageous and unexpected ways.” For this reason we believe in the process of reading and re-reading for in one moment, we are one with the text, and then in another, we are no longer the same.

This book reunites four legends of the indigenous peoples of Brazil: the legend of the manioc; the legend of the appearance of the night; the legend that explains the appearance of the moon and the legend that explains why the animals have more or less flesh. There are titles such as “Mani’s body”, “The birth of the night”, “White moon in a silver sky” and “Alagadielali”. The legends are retold by the writer Celso Sisto, who is also a researcher of indigenous culture, with beautiful illustrations made by Mateus Rios, an example of talent in the creation and respect to the cultural diversity.
The main character is an adorable and enchanting old lady. She is a little clumsy and crazy, so to say - but also someone sweet and generous who likes living life intensely and in different ways; but most of all, she loves making delicious sweets. The problem is: besides being a fantastic confectioner, she is also absent-minded. She is so absentminded that she forgets about the sweets in the pans and they get burned, but their wonderful smell does not disappear. This book, with beautiful illustrations by Andre Neves, one of the most renowned Brazilian illustrators, invites the reader to see life from different angles.

In this toy-book, created by experienced art educator Margareth Darezzo, ludic is explored in several ways: the CD includes 15 songs that kids will love, and the book has interactive surprises such as games, tabs and magic lantern. For each song, the author proposes a joke and exercises for musical literacy - in addition to presenting the lyrics of the songs for the children to sing along. The book also features facts about instruments, composers, and rhythms. A book to read, listen to, play and learn about music, animals, differences, environmental preservation.
Where did we come from? Why are we here? The mystery of the origin of the universe has intrigued humanity since the dawn of civilization. Today, one of the most widely accepted scientific explanations is that of the Big Bang theory: the explosion of a single atom would have given rise to everything that exists. In this book, Judith Nuria Maida, a professor of astronomy for children who has more than a decade of experience, explains this theory with simplicity and lyricism. The beautiful illustrations by award winning artist Fernando Vilela make the book even more fascinating.
ISBN: 978-85-0814-263-7 22.5 x 27.5 cm 32 pages A beautiful text about the art of storytelling and the power of influence a teacher had over his students. An old teacher helps people telling stories: all of them are always delighted and encouraged by their stories. The most intriguing part is that he always finds the right story for the right person at exactly the right moment. It seems like he reads their thoughts and feelings. It is so with the character of the book. It is likewise with the talented Nan Brenman, who literally nailed it with this narrative. The graphic project and the illustrations are differentiated and call a lot of attention. All of the illustrations were created around a hole that is exactly in the middle of the pages, symbolizing the highest score of a target.

The writer Jonas Ribeiro has published more than 101 books and has visited more than 1001 schools throughout the country. In this book, Jonas tells us the story of his life since he was a boy. No, he did not make up this story. This is his real story. He might have invented one or two details; after all, a writer is like a fisherman: he loves to exaggerate a little, or maybe more than just a little...
Vanda Vamp is a little vampire girl who loves music and dance. But she suffers with her fate: she cannot see her own image reflected in a mirror. In this story, the little vampire girl’s questioning and trajectory of life show the reader that deep feelings can turn the impossible things into real ones.
In an endangered forest lived an old vegetarian wolf. Sad and lonely, he was suffering until the moment he got face-toface with a hunter. He felt hallucinating chills and shivers on his skin from the old days. But his killer instinct was old too and his senses could not smell the hunt anymore. In this story of life and death, extreme emotions are captured by shades of black and white. Who is the man and who is the wolf? Does it make any sense to ask this question?

Paper Models
Paulo Rodrigues
by Paulo Mendes da Rocha
Union advisor of the telecommunications field, Paulo Rodrigues was 53 when his debut novel, A margem da linha [At the Track side] (2001), was released by Cosac Naify. In the same year he won the prestigious APCA award as a revelation writer. Since then, he had published a book of short stories, Redemoinho [Whirlpool] (2004), and a novel, As vozes do sotao [Voices from the Attic} (2009). Using the urban periphery landscape of his modest childhood and the family conflicts as the backdrop for his stories, Paulo Rodrigues discusses the humankind dilemmas with a pulsating fablelike vein. “His false simplicity would be like an attempt, undermined from within it, to resume all that has been broken with the modern world.” Folha de S. Paulo - At the Trackside was published in Spain, Portugal and France
ISBN 978-85-750-3625-9 21.0 x 17.3 cm 64 pages When designing a new project, there is a moment when the architect should transform the first drafts into something palpable. He can then verify the proportions, the shadows generated by the volumes and compare the urban and human scales. In order to do this Mendes da Rocha has chosen to work with paper models, using simple materials easily found in his office: wire, adhesive tape, glue. Originated in a workshop given in 2006, the book depicts the processes and concerns of the Brazilian architecture. Mendes da Rocha astutely and seductively reveals how he elaborates the solutions for his projects and indicates some of his creative fundamentals, referring to several fields of knowledge, specially physics, geography, arts and literature.
Prizes (Brazil’s most prestigious publishing industry award), honorable mentions from the Bologna Ragazzi New Horizons, and the inclusion of its titles in the AIGA’s (American Institute of Graphic Arts) annual 50 Best Graphic Designs. The Maker of Elders
Maurice, the Green-Eyed Lion
Vitório’s Dream
by Rodrigo Lacerda
by Flávia Maria and Millôr Fernandes
by Veridiana Scarpelli
Illustrations by Adrianne Gallinari ISBN: 978-85-7503-664-8 16.0 x 23.0 cm 136 pages
ISBN 978-85-7503-830-7 24.0 x 35.0 cm 24 pages
ISBN 978-85-405-0179-9 Format: 21.0 x 21.0 cm 32 pages
The book is big and yellow. So is Maurice, the lion who lives in a boy’s wardrobe. It doesn’t matter that the boy has never seen him; when you are a child, you do not need to see a ferocious animal to know for a fact that it lives in your room. One day, the boy sums up his courage to finally find out for sure and ends up meeting Maurice. Full of unrivalled humor and artistry, Millor adds his characteristic drawings to Flavia Maria’s prosaic text that exudes irreverence. The new edition (the first was released in 1969) has a renewed graphic design with the ideal size for harboring an animal of its stature, as well as his “big mouth of bared teeth”.
The young author debuts in children’s fiction in a fun way. Veridiana’s narrative skills and talent kidnap us into the dream-world. Vitorio flies through the sky, dressed as a masked super-hero. Ducks come along holding umbrellas, puddles are a portal to the deepest parts of the ocean, which, in turn, hold another surprise, and another, and another. The double-pages suggest continuity in the narrative, maintaining the flow of the adventure and the act of reading. It is the perfect book for all of us who have not given up fantasy and dreams.
Rodrigo Lacerda takes the reader through the experiences and discoveries of an adolescent who turns into an adult without realizing it. Pedro is a teenager like any other, but with one difference: he loves reading, and gets deeply involved in and moved by books. A pity his own life sometimes seems much more of a mess than those of the characters in the storybooks. In this coming-of-age novel, the author offers a portrait of the writer as a young man. During that phase in which we all want to be so many things at once, an enigmatic teacher helps him in the difficult task of finding his place in the world. Through this master/student relationship and the discovery of love, Pedro subtly makes himself old.

Frederico Pernambucano is an expert on the subject of the Cangaco - an expression of popular Brazilian irredentism. He immerses into the unfamiliar world of its material culture, providing deep insight regarding the refinement and meaning of the few authentic pieces worn by the cangaceiros (so-called social bandits), such as Solomon’s shield, the Maltese cross, the fleur-de-lis, the figure eight, the Greek sashes, the sublimated variations of local flora, and the many possible combinations that the cangaceiro used to create a “uniform” that served both the ornamental vanity of the fierce warrior and the easily understood yearning for mystical protection.

Tropical China Is a book by the sociologist Gilberto Freyre about the many orientalism present in the Brazilian society. Organized by Edson Nery da Fonseca, the book collects extracts of different works by Freyre which deals with the Orient culture. Freyre recalls vestiges of the Oriental presence in Brazil, like sunshades, fans, cane, silk bedspread, couscous, the habit of using a shawl, and others. The Brazilian sociologist shows, with all his wisdom, how the Orient influenced the ways of dressing, feeling and thinking of the extra-European civilization formed in Latin America, a kind of “tropical China”.
In Breakfast in bed Marcos Rey portrays the city of São Paulo. In that universe we see Norma, Sandra and Sylvana Rios in three different moments of their life. Norma is a beautiful, poor and needy manicure living in Vila Carrao, a poor neighborhood. Sandra is a store clerk, photo model, call girl and an obscure business broker. Sylvana Rios is a successful radio, TV and movie actress. They all gather in the scenario of Ipiranga Avenue, Sao Joao Avenue, old Excelsior Radio, and Mme. Rosita’s fashion studio at Paulista Avenue. Like several other author’s novels , this book is a ride through the city he loved so much.
In this book, Ana Maria Machado and her daughter Luisa Baeta together once again, , invite the reader to explore the way of looking with sensitivity through texts and photos They show how to look at simple things of daily life - wind, houses, streets, squares, bread, fruit, rain, dirt, among others - and feel all their richness, mystery and complexity. Who made my father, my mother? My parents made me. And who made them? My grandparents did. And who stayed far behind? Who made the first of us? To feel the world around you, you have to think about it, raise issues, ask questions and suggest answers in a way of making incredible discoveries and getting a delightful sense of belonging.

This is a literary event which takes place weekly in some south zone bar in Sao Paulo, where everyone is invited to come to the microphone and recite texts or just talk about their thoughts.
An unparalleled work in Portuguese language and maybe in all other languages, Brazilian Folklore Dictionary reappears in a new , revised and updated edition. This very important work, for those who want to know the Brazilian culture in depth, renews its importance each time it is showed in bookstores. It’s a kind of short summary of more than forty years of passionate study and research about Brazilian folklore and ethnography, and through thousands of entries, it is also a vivid and thrilling synthesis about superstitions, beliefs, dances, legends, and magical practices embraced and lived by Brazilian people in their daily life.
In the year 2000, Ignacio de Loyola Brandao, his wife and two cousins took a trip to New England. Beyond their wish to know that part of the United States, which is considered to be the biggest writers’ stronghold per square mile, the foreigners, especially Loyola, got themselves into a quest for Woodstock. They longed for that mythical image of the historical music festival in 1969. Then, the cheerful tourists make an astonishing finding. In I woke up in Woodstock, Loyola plots delicious considerations over several themes so that the reader experience unexpected ideas, all intertwined about cinema, literature, and myths that built his own worldly view.

In our days, the Lord needs a rescue squad, highly trained on God’s Word. Without nourishment we will lose the fight. Every day we have to get our “manna” portion. Otherwise, we will stumble and God doesn’t want to see us defeated by lack of food. Happy are those who understand the importance of the Bible in their daily life. Those will be the winners.
The book talks about the charisma of tears and all the good it brings to us, as the power of healing and forgiveness. The author shows us that the gift of tears is a way to express ourselves before God. “It Is a simple and humble gift of the Holy Spirit that brings In It a salvation power.” It has nothing to do with dismay, drowsiness, weak will, negativism, depression or even sadness. It may be considered an effective prayer, that God answers promptly. God has the power to transform in victory the humiliation we live at present.
This is another book of Márcio Mendes from his “Gifts of the Spirit” collection. In this second volume, the author talks about the importance of the prayer in tongues and about the good it brings to us. Márcio Mendes writes in a clear and simple language to talk about the wonders God realizes in our lives through his gifts. You will realize that God’s ways are very simple and to experience them is much easier than you can imagine.

Since the first mission house though the Pontifical Recognizing, Canção Nova continues to prove that it is a God’s Deed.

This book is about argumentation in Portuguese language. Although it could be included and defined explicitly in the context of argumentative semantics or macro syntax of speech, the book brings important contributions to language teaching and comprehension of texts. By explaining the mechanisms of the functioning of the intentions in a speech, it offers valuable resources to text exploitation and the creation of exercises. The book is written in a precise technical terminology, which is always defined in a very simple style, without unnecessary formal refinements.

This three volume collection brings together essays and letters by Rosa Luxemburg. The first volume gathers essays written between 1899 and 1914, presenting two of the main controversies that marked the philosopher`s career: opposition to social democratic revisionism and criticism to the leninist conception of the leading party. The second volume encompasses the period from August 1914 to 1919, time in which the German social democracy abandoned the fight against militarism and Rosa Luxemburg decided to act independently, alongside Karl Liebknecht. The third book brings the philosopher`s letters, in which she expresses private anxieties and discusses topics from politics, history and literature to music, botany and geology.

The author scrutinizes Strand’s photographic poetry by analyzing not only his photos and movies, but also his philosophical and literary references, his writings and those of his contemporary fellows, with whom he dialogues.
