Mount Snow Resort: The Anchor of the Mount Snow Valley Another exciting summer is on tap at Mount Snow in West Dover with downhill mountain biking, scenic golf, festivals, events and more. While many outdoor enthusiasts are familiar with the popular destination for its skiing and snowboarding during the winter months, the fun doesn’t stop when the Green Mountains are green. Mount Snow Golf Club is an 18-hole championship course that defines “mountain golf” with wide, undulating fairways and large, well-manicured greens that are all perfectly designed into the hilly landscape. Fairways Restaurant is open daily with lunch specials and million-dollar views from the expansive deck. Legendary steep, gnarly terrain is what Mount Snow’s downhill mountain biking has always been known for. But now with the addition of Trail 7, the East’s only introductory downhill trail, lift served mountain biking is something anyone who is comfortable on a bike can enjoy. Come see why readers of MTBparks.com voted Mount Snow Bike Park the #2 Best Bike Park in the Northeast. In today’s fast-paced world, there are a couple things that can be easily overlooked but are arguably the most important – connecting with family and exploring the outdoors. That’s where the NEW Family Camp at Mount Snow comes in. The 2014 Hungry Lion Bike Tour Returns to the Mount Snow Valley The Mount Snow Valley plays host to some outstanding events throughout the course of each year and the staff at Vermont Country Properties Sotheby’s International Realty are among the best supporters of one of the Valley’s favorites - The Hungry Lion Bike Tour presented by the Whitingham-Halifax Lions Club. For the past two years, our Mount Snow agent Joe Specht and managing broker Leslie Fraser have not only taken on the challenging rides but have been two of the top fund raisers for the event. This year, Leslie and Joe will join many others in Southern Vermont on Saturday, September 27th for the 3rd annual tour as participants and sponsors raise money to end hunger while rolling along beautiful back roads surrounded by fall foliage. The Hungry Lion cycles four great routes: a 30 mile ramble, 35 mile tour, 55 mile flyer, and a 75 mile challenge. Each ride is designed to challenge both new and experienced cyclists. And this year, any cyclist can opt out of the fi-

nal and most challenging climb – for a quicker return to the festivities at tour’s end. Two rest stops will help keep riders fortified – and at the end of the tour, participants can enjoy a relaxing massage at a celebration barbecue on beautiful Town Hill in Whitingham. Bear’s Den Carving Charles Dion has been making chainsaw carvings professionally for over 15 years. Having a residential tree service for over 20 years, as well as logging and building log homes has evolved into a creative way to use his chainsaw skills. His wife Jennifer does the finish work on his sculptures so he can concentrate on creating new carvings. Last year their son Colby, who is 15 years old started carving and is already selling some of his work at craft fairs and flea markets. He is learning all aspects of the family business and hopes to follow in his parents’ footsteps. They have a workshop at their home in Townshend, Vermont. Bears are their specialty. Made in a variety of poses such as standing, sitting, as planters, benches, tables, welcome bears, pen holders, and lantern holders to name a few. They also make moose, eagles, owls, wood spirit faces, birdhouses, signs, and a variety of other sculptures in many native Vermont wood species. The carvings come in many sizes from six inches to six feet,

and the price points range to satisfy customers’ budgets and tastes. They are also able to customize. As members of the Society of Vermont Artists & Craftsmen Inc. and Vermont Hand Crafters Inc. the Dion’s are committed to the tradition of fine arts and crafts. They participate in juried craft fairs and festivals throughout New England to market their art. In Vermont you may come across the Bear’s Den booth at The Wilmington Flea Market, Quechee Balloon Festival,

Townshend Pumpkin Festival, and numerous other venues. They also display at Castleberry Arts and Craft Fairs in NH and MA. In September you can find their exhibit at the Vermont Building at The Big E in West Springfield, MA and Charles occasionally demonstrates his chainsaw carving talent there. The Adams Farm, Wilmington, Vermont The Adams family has continually owned the land they now farm since 1865. It is now steward by fifth generation Kip Adams and Tina Cullin. The family has engaged in various agricultural activities over the past, nearly 150 years. Each generation adjusting to the times; maintaining their livelihood while preserving the farm and a way of life. The farm had a fine timber and sugar lot. This provided well for the first generation. Then they added dairy cows. They also opened the farm to the public in the 1890’s. In the 1930’s lumber production was expanded to meet the needs of shipyards in Boston. In the 50’s the farmstead was open to overnight guests. In the 60’s the maple lot was expanded and horse drawn sleigh rides were added. In 86’ the family participated in the government by out of anticipated dairy production, and closed their dairy. The gravel pit on the farm provided needed materials for area building in the 1980’s. In the 1990’s a petting farm, the farm experience; demonstrations & educational programs as well as a retail store were offered. As economic times changed, so did visitation to the farm. The farm was once again closed to the public in 2009 and put up for sale. That’s when Kip & Tina purchased the farm. They knew they had to do things differently, and are continually looking for new endeavors.

Today, Adam’s Farm is a “Full Circle Farm”, a bit different from the petting farm you may have visited prior to its closing. For about the price of a movie ticket, you can still see, pet, feed, milk, and snuggle an array of animals. You can still enjoy a horse drawn wagon or sleigh ride and watch maple syrup being made. There is still a selection of farm made products and even some new additions. You will find The Adams Farm famous barbecue sauce is very popular, jams & preserves, maple products, goat milk & emu oil soap & skin care products. Kip and Tina realize there is a need and demand for healthy, locally produced food and provide a selection of farm raised meats and farm fresh eggs. They have grown the farm into a working farm, raising animals through to processing. They pride themselves in raising their animals Vermont made feeds, with no hormones or pesticides. They care for their animal’s everyday in humane conditions. Recently, Kip and Tina invested heavily in a state certified processing facility; One of only a few in the state and the only one in southern Vermont. In addition to processing their own animals and offering the meat for sale, they also provide a great service to the local community. Many families raise their own animals and often a few extra for their neighbors or to sell. Having such a facility close by eliminates transportation costs and makes raising animals more profitable which will ultimately increase the availability of locally, naturally raised sources of meat. Adam’s Farm also offers a complete array of feed and grain for livestock and domestic animals.

LAKESIDE PROPERTY Views of the water and sunsets from the living room, dining room, kitchen, upstairs bedroom, deck and hot-tub! Swim, kayak, canoe or fish right from your backyard. $359,000 4361771

Adam’s Farm now also offers fly-fishing, lessons and guides. They have their own stocked pond and streams and provide all the equipment. They continue to offer events for private parties, buses and groups; Sleigh and wagon rides, maple production & the retail store. You can still enjoy their petting farm, indoors seasonally. You will find, cows, horses, goats, pigs, sheep, emus, chickens, ducks, turkeys, kittens, rabbits and working dogs. If you haven’t visited in a while, you should. It is a real farm experience, enjoyable for both children and adults. We are very fortunate to such a special place.

Welcome to Wardsboro

Traveling along scenic Route 100 about 8 miles north of Mount Snow, you will arrive in the small village of Wardsboro, settled in 1779. Your first stop should be the Bittersweet Café and Bakery, open for breakfast and lunch. The food is homemade, hearty and inexpensive. Be sure to try Cindy’s award winning pumpkin streusel pie for dessert. On the corner of Main Street, is the Wardsboro Country Store where you will find most anything you might be looking fo; hardware items, local maple syrup, fresh produce, and excellent meats, including Kip’s famous homemade sausage. Breads and pastries are baked daily at the store. Fill your gas tank before leaving even if you have arrived by snowmobile, as many do. The VAST runs right through town. Normally a sleepy little town, on the 4th of July (except if it falls on a Sunday), Wardsboro is transformed when the oldest (this year the 65th) Independence Day celebration in Southern Vermont takes place. The crowd has been estimated at over 5,000 to view the patriotic parade, visit over 50 street vendors, enjoy the chicken barbeque and try the best strawberry shortcake around! You might even take home a homemade pie for later. This is truly a community event in which many volunteers participate, all for the benefit of the local churches. The parade started when the Methodist Church’s Ladies Aid Society saw the need to plump up the budget to keep the pastor another year, the first 4th of July celebration occurred, with a few booths, children’s games and no doubt a chicken pie supper. That was 65 years ago. Not far from the store, past the town office, is the historic town hall. A group of civic minded residents are presently raising money to restore antique painted curtains, commonly used in early New England town halls. This will preserve a part of history and enhance the stage for the many local activities that take place here including the Gilfeather Turnip Festival. Yes, this heirloom turnip is worthy of celebration since it originated in Wardsboro back in the early 1900’s. At the festival you may browse the many vendors of Vermont hand made or grown products,

enjoy local music, sample turnip soup and enter your prize gilfeather turnip in the contest. Across from town hall is the Methodist Church, built in 1832. A few doors down, is the Gloria Danforh Memorial Library and barn which was recently renovated by the Friends of the Wardsboro Library, an active group of ladies who are busy fundraising year round to support the vibrant library. Librarian, Jill Dean, will be happy to assist you with books or DVD’s and you may use one of the computers or bring your own, as WiFi is provided 24 hours a day. You may use it, free of charge, outside when the library is not open. Next door is McMichael Park with playground, skateboard park and baseball field. In addition to the amenities already mentioned, last but not least, Wardsboro can be very proud of it’s small Elementary school which was recently listed as one of the exemplary schools in Vermont as a result of students’ high scores on proficiency tests. Rosemary FitzSimons was named 2014 Vermont Elementary Principal of the year for 2014.

Discovering Your Vermont Story

Every home, cabin, country estate, farm and vacant land has a story waiting to be told — from the first family dinner to holiday traditions to the discovery of the secret hide-out in the woods behind the house. At Vermont Country Properties Sotheby’s International Realty, we’re here to help homebuyers start that story, and to help sellers share it. It all starts with our commitment and connection to our communities across Vermont. Our agents each have their own story to tell — they know what it’s like to be head over heels in love with Vermont and they’re not shy about passing it on. Thanks to community involvement and diverse interests, everyone at Vermont Country Properties Sotheby’s International Realty has a wealth of local expertise, but also a unique perspective on life in Vermont. We, as real estate agents and as a local Vermont company, are excited to spotlight the stories of the properties and people we represent through a new concept for our print ads and marketing material: an invitation to “Discover Your Vermont Story” At its core, the concept reflects our core values — excellence, integrity, innovation — and our common joy: a rich life and livelihood in Vermont. We start by uncovering all the things that make a property exceptional, then bring it to life using outstanding photography and vivid narrative details. Our distinctive storytelling process highlights the unique characteristics of each property and offers customers a more complete vision of its personality. Because a life in Vermont is so much more than where you hang your hat, we sincerely enjoy helping customers fill in the rest of the details, from choosing a community to sharing some of the places and things we cherish ourselves. It is with pleasure that we use our considerable experience and resources to artfully unite Vermont’s special places with those who will cherish them as we do, helping people discover their Vermont story. Let us help you discover your Vermont story. For more information on real estate all over Vermont, visit our website at www.vermontcountryproperties.com or call 802.464.4608.
