Overlooking Caspian Lake

The Highland Lodge has been a mainstay for the village of Greensboro and Caspian Lake since the early 1920’s, when the era of boarding houses began. Highland Lodge has welcomed families for generations; each year returning to swim and boat in the lake, read on the porch, walk the woods trails and pass on the legacy of a relaxed way of lakeside life to friends and family. Highland Lodge has a main building with a commercial kitchen and nine bedrooms. In addition, there are ten private cottages overlooking the lake, fields and tennis court. The property has 290’ of sandy lake frontage with a boat house. These and other features create a rare offering to consider. $1,800,000

Vermont Country Properties Sotheby’s International Realty The Stowe Derby

FAT BIKES MAKE A DEBUT AT THE DERBY IN 2015

70th Edition of the Derby is on Sunday, February 22, 2015 The Stowe Derby is one of the oldest and most unique ski races in North America. It started in 1945 as a personal challenge between two amazing skiers - Austrian, Sepp Ruschp who was hired to come to America and head the new ski school at Stowe and Erling Strom, world famous mountaineer from Norway. The challenge was the same as it is today - to race from the top of Mt. Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak to the historic village of Stowe... on ONE pair of skis! The ultimate test of a skiers ability. Ruschp was the winner of the first Stowe Derby. Today, the race attracts over 900 competitors, ranging from Canadian Cross Country Ski Team members and NCAA Champions to recreational skiers looking for a thrill. While the race can be very competitive at all levels, it is also a fun race, having been chosen as one of the top sporting events in the state by readers of Vermont Sports Magazine.

For the 70th edition of the Stowe Derby an unprecedented class of competitor will be introduced. In addition to classic nordic skiing and skate ski categories a new fatbike class will be added for winter cycling competitors and enthusiasts. The Mt. Mansfield Ski Club is proud to partner up with Mountain Bike Vermont to present the fatbike portion of the Stowe Derby. The race will include 100 fatbike riders competing in a parallel format to the traditional Derby race model. Once all ski competitors have completed the 4 mile descent down the Toll Road, cycling participants will follow suit, leaving from a non-lift accessed start gate situated on the upper trails of the Stowe Mountain Resort Touring Center. Departing from the shoulder of Mount Mansfield, competitors descend 650 vertical feet over the 14km of the remaining ski racecourse. Like the skiers before them, fatbike racers will navigate through Stowe’s hillside terrain followed by a sprint down the scenic rec path before crossing the finish in front of the jeering fans in the center of Stowe Village.

Over the course, participants ski through 20km of challenging terrain, racing down Mt. Mansfield’s Toll Road and along the entire length of the Stowe Recreation Path before reaching the finish in the village. The course has a total vertical drop of over 2,600 feet. The winners will complete the course in under 45 minutes, while recreational skiers can take a couple of hours to go the same distance.
