What’s New at Mount Snow? Following a variety of snowmaking projects that began in the spring of 2013 with the goal of improving the system’s efficiency and output, Mount Snow announces it will receive 645 new low-energy snow guns this fall. By replacing hundreds of old, less efficient snow guns, the resort’s entire fleet of snowmaking equipment will now be comprised of 100% low energy technology.

to spend more time making snow and less time moving equipment because a snow gun will accompany every water hydrant on the mountain. “Gone are the days that our snowmakers need to spend time dragging hoses and snow guns through the woods or from one location on a trail to another,” said Peak Resorts’ Northeast Project Manager, Brendan Ryan. “With a snow gun at every hydrant, ideally our crew will only need to position the equipment and dial them in which means they can spend more time doing what they’re great at: making snow.”

As a result of this upgrade, Mount Snow will have the ability to produce more snow at one time than it did before thanks to the efficient operating nature of the new technology. The new snow guns will require eight cubic feet per minute (CFM) of compressed air, compared to 200-300 CFM that the older technology required.

in marginal snowmaking conditions will allow the resort to open terrain faster and recover more quickly following inclement weather.

These new additions add to the firepower of a snowmaking system that was already anchored by 253 high output/high efficiency fan guns, which is the most of any resort in North America.

Another advantage to this improvement is the resort’s snowmakers will be able

Two Planking Powder Are you among the many Vermont skiers who find themselves flailing rather than floating on a powder day, don’t worry, you are not alone. Joe Specht, confirmed powder hound and Vermont Country Properties Sotheby’s International Realty agent, shared some tips for the next time that the “snow gods” bless us with manna from heaven, also known as a powder day. 1- Lighten up. Skiing powder requires a softer touch underfoot. Think more of steering your skis than edging them. 2- Weight skis evenly, favoring the downhill ski slightly.

drive anything effectively from there. And of course, sooner or later it will inevitably end up with you eating powder, anyway. So, with the balls of your feet firmly planted in the boot, lift the ends of your toes so that they are touching the top of the boot. True powder hounds, such as Joe, will list skiing pow as the MOST enjoyable thing that you can possibly do on this beautiful earth. If you have previously struggled with “pow-pow” hopefully these tips will have you hooting, howling and yodeling with a smile so big it hurts on the next powder day.

3- Eliminate twisting of the upper body so that it is quietly and squarely facing down the hill continually. 4- Move your feet closer together so as to create more of a platform that will allow for increased floatation. (If you are on shaped skis that are fatter than what you have previously skied and your friends keep telling you that you need to move your feet farther apart- they are right. But that would be for those hardpack conditions that you are in most of the time). Remember, this is powdah! 5- If you have not already done so, consider upgrading your skis. The new skis are shaped, fat and fun. And many of them work great in both hardpack and (most) powder conditions that we get east of the Mississippi. 6- Lift your toes. This is one of my favorites. This achieves (more dynamically and functionally correctly) what is the intended result of leaning back – keeping the ski tips up so that they do not submarine and cause you to faceplant. Leaning back on your heels is very tiring and just puts you in the “backseat” and you really can’t
