Welcome To Okemo … We’ve Come A Long Way, Baby!! Did you know that Ludlow was founded in 1761 and the first train to bring summer guests to our town arrived nearly 100 years later in 1849? It would be another 100+ years before the first winter visitors arrived to ski when Okemo opened with 4” of snow and 2 pomalifts on January 31, 1956. Did you know that twenty years earlier the Civil Conservation Corps was commissioned to build the first road (Mountain Road) to the top of Ludlow (Okemo) Mountain, cut some hiking and skiing trails and originally scheduled to build one of the best ski jumps in New England? And that during World War II, ski-troop training was done on the “big mountain”? Then in 1954, a group of local visionaries sold stock at $10/ share to their neighbors - townsmen and farmers alike - and voila: Okemo was born… From the beginning, plans were to create the best family ski area in Vermont an exclusive “retreat” for families and a “glorious winter playground”. Daily lift tickets were $5 or individual ride tickets were 20 cents each! A family of 4 could ski all day for $17 or 60 cents would let you ride the 6,207’ “Red” Pomalift (now Nor’easter) – touted as the longest poma lift in the country. Eight minutes later you arrived at the summit’s “Wigwarm” warming hut and from there you could choose to ski Squaw (now Easy Rider), Geronimo (now World Cup), Tomahawk, or Mountain Road. Even back then, the words “world class resort” were being whispered, and, by

1971, there were an incredible 3 chairlifts and 6 pomalifts. But then in the 70’s, rising costs, Western ski area development and several disappointing winters for snow made survival more and more difficult. Fortunately, a young couple with beach resort expe-

rience showed up in Vermont and fell in love with our mountain! Diane and Tim Mueller purchased Okemo in 1982 and the rest, as they say, is history. Pomas and slow double chairlifts gave way to magic carpets and high speed quads. Thirty years later Okemo has 119 trails, 19 lifts, a massive Superpipe (520’ long 18’ high) and 97% snowmaking coverage – the most in Vermont! The Muellers’ focus has always been on providing superior customer service, snowmaking and overall mountain excellence…with constant improvements….always striving to make your experience the best it can be…the “Okemo Difference”. Through improving state-of-the-art technologies for grooming and snow making, Okemo, as always, maintains its reputation for providing the best possible ski conditions in Vermont under any weather conditions.

Okemo Walk To Slopes Great location on Okemo Mountain! Just steps from the Sachem Trail, you can watch the skiers from your living room window. Tons of living space with over 4,000 SF offering 6+ bedrooms and 5+ baths. 3-car attached garage with additional space above. Ideal for large families, groups or multiple families to invest together. This home has space for everyone on your guest list. $1,250,000 F4109166

From that first season, Okemo has seen the longest continuing streak of major ski area improvements in the history of Vermont and it prevails with Jackson Gore Village expanding into a fabulous 4-seasons family destination. We believe Okemo truly means “All WelCome Home”.

Here are a few more interesting factoids … • Okemo offers the most on-slope residences in the East. • Okemo groomers are out on the slopes 16 hours each and every day. • Okemo has the 2nd largest ski race program in the country (OMARA). • Okemo has the highest vertical drop in Southern Vermont at 2,200’. • Okemo “Top Guns” are the snowmakers who can surface their trail the quickest and best! • Okemo was listed by Forbes as the top Eastern ski resort for families. • Okemo was listed by SATW as among the “Top Ten Wedding Proposal Sites” (US/Can). • Okemo was listed by Golfweek as one of the 2013 Best Courses You Can Play. • Okemo’s Timber Ripper Mt Coaster listed by Yankee Magazine as Editors Choice NE Best. Want to read more? Head to the Book Nook and grab a copy of Karen Lorentz’ book “Okemo All Come Home”. It’s fascinating!

Two Pristine Wonders For the outdoor enthusiast who truly enjoys a leisure canoe or kayak outing in a pristine nature filled environment, then the following two Green Mountain Lakes are awaiting you. The first being Lowell Lake State Park, which is located in Londonderry, and was established in 1981, when the State of Vermont purchased 207 acres from the Estate of Arline Weiss Gardner; on the southern end of Lowell Lake. This area included the dam, an early era cemetery and an informal car top boat launch. With the assistance of the Vermont Land Trust, 154 additional acres; known as the “White Property”, was acquired in 1996. This area encompassed a former summer camp with a rustic lodge and numerous lakeside cabins. Also included were two islands; Picnic Island and Annie’s Island, and a residential structure that is being used as a caretaker’s residence. Currently, the park property includes the majority of the lakeshore and some significant wetland habitat. It is ideal for the canoe or kayak enthusiast and includes many species of water fowl, deer, bear, turkey and other creatures of the wild. There are trails that surround the lake for those who want to experience nature first hand. The second is Lake Ninevah, which is located near Plymouth, which was named

in the 1930s after an early settlement that had been located in this area. Before that, the lake had many names, including Beal’s Pond, Patch Pond, and later Tyson Reservoir, when its dam was used to help power the giant bellows of the Tyson Iron Works, which operated from 1837 to 1872. Since the early 1960s, conservationists have focused on keeping the lake and its environment wild, yet welcoming for those interested in nature-friendly recreation and a reflective way of life. Lake Nineveh is one of Vermont’s natural treasures — home to loons, bears, moose, eagles, herons, and other wildlife. The lake has a surface area of 150 acres and a maximum depth of 12 feet. Both of these lakes beckon those folks who are looking to be one with nature.

Vermont’s Scenic Road Two years after the Scenic Route 100 Byway was established, the effort to expand the Byway north and south along RT100 to include an additional 14 towns has been completed. On April 19, 2013, the Vermont Transportation Board formally approved the Scenic Route 100 Byway expansion to now encompass 20 towns. This is now Vermont’s second largest Byway at 138 miles, behind the Connecticut River Byway, crisscrossing along the spine of the Green Mountain from the Mad River Byway to the Massachusetts’s border. Scenic Route 100 Byway is located in south-central Vermont. Running along the east edge of the Green Mountains, this 138-mile byway has a wide range of historic, cultural, scenic, natural and recreational resources. Recognized by Yankee Magazine as one of “the most scenic drives in New England” and part of Vermont’s “Skiers Highway” which connects some of the best skiing and riding opportunities in the northeast, this byway connects three of the region’s best golf courses, along with extraordinary lakes for fishing, boating and swimming, impressive mountains for hiking and biking with an interesting network of roads which are popular with cyclists. The Scenic Route 100 Byway includes communities from north to south: The Granville Gulf area, Hancock, Rochester, Stockbridge, Pittsfield, Killington, Bridgewater, Plymouth, Ludlow, Andover, Cavendish, Weston, Londonderry, Jamaica, Wardsboro, Stratton, Dover, Wilmington, Whitingham and Stamford. Scenic Route 100 travels through the heart of the Green Mountains and is home to some of the best outdoor recreation in Vermont as well as an abundance of historical and cultural attractions. Visitors find they can spend weeks exploring this 138-mile stretch.

Falls or a quick gondola ride up the state’s second highest mountain, Killington Peak. Scenic Route 100 is also full of rich history and home to dozens of cultural landmarks that make it a truly unique journey. Visit President Calvin Coolidge’s birthplace and Historic Site; and make sure to leave time to shop and visit Plymouth Artisan Cheese. In Ludlow you can also see where Calvin Coolidge went to school, now Black River Academy Museum. Outdoor recreation abounds on Scenic Route 100. Home to some of the best skiing and riding opportunities in the northeast at Okemo Mountain, Killington and Pico Mountain resorts, and Okemo Valley Nordic Center and Mountain Meadows Nordic & Snowshoe Area, Scenic Route 100 also offers endless activities in the summer and fall. Mountain bikers and cyclists are drawn to the extensive trails and winding roads; golfers flock to play some of Vermont’s most popular and challenging courses including Vermont’s #1 Public Course and the Okemo Valley Golf Club; hikers come to explore the renowned Long Trail; boaters spend the day paddling and exploring the numerous lakes; and anglers try their luck at any number of the neighboring ponds and streams. All ages can enjoy a stroll around a classic town green, kids pass their time at one of the many local playgrounds and anyone can explore a waterfall on a wheelchair accessible nature trail. Coutesy of Okemo Valley Chamber of Commerce

Scenic Route 100 encompasses four-season beauty and is internationally known for its incredible fall foliage. With rolling hills, a meandering river, crystal clear lakes and ponds, mountain and valley vistas, unspoiled forests, and quintessential Vermont towns, this route has it all. On the southern sections, visitors can follow the Black River, passing the sparkling waters of Lake Rescue, Amherst and Echo Lakes. On its northern section, travelers delight at the incredible mountain views while the more adventurous leave their cars for an easy stroll to Thundering Brook

Four-Season Living in the Lakes Region of Vermont In the center of the Green Mountains of Vermont, the lakes region truly supplies year-round living for everyone, young and old. In the heart of Okemo Valley there are more than 16 lakes and ponds, along with the Black River, streams and falls. The options are endless during each season from fishing and kayaking to snowmobiling and snowshoeing, not to mention swimming and boating, the list goes on. Local favorites include visiting Plymouth State Park to enjoy camping, swimming, hiking, kayaking, canoeing and biking all along beautiful Echo Lake. Located off of Route 100, Echo Lake is on a long line of lakes that run along Route 100. This area is very popular for fishing as it is home to rainbow and lake trout; at the end of this chain of lakes the Black River starts, opening up the possibility for miles of fly fishing. Many of the lakes offer access by kayak or canoe, yet some are large enough for motor boats as well. Lake Rescue is very popular for motor boats considering its size, as well as it naturally serene waters making it perfect for waterskiing and wakeboarding. If you decide to hike along the Okemo State Forest, check out Buttermilk Falls to jump in the mountain’s cooling water. During the colder months the lakes region offers slightly different options for outdoor fun. Ice fishing starts up once the lakes are frozen over giving the fishermen a year round season. Not only do the shanties pop up on the ice, the snowmobiles are brought out of the garage. There are many snowmobiles rental shops within the area, allowing visitors a chance to give it a try. The Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) has created and maintains hundreds of miles to ride, including trails in the Lakes Region. Where can you stay and dine? Along the lakes there are many darling inns and resorts. Echo Lake Inn is located at the start the lake, where you can enjoy a meal fresh from the local Vermont farms and rest peacefully while enjoying all that the area has to offer. Just across the road is the Inn at Water’s Edge. With similar taste, the Inn has fine dining and cozy accommodations. Located in between Okemo and Killington Mountain sits Hawk Inn & Mountain Resort which offers various experiences near Amherst Lake including horseback riding, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, boating, and tennis.

Jackson Gore Village

Okemo Mountain Resort became a true 4-seasons resort with a recreation center, tennis courts, kid’s activity center, hiking and biking, and the Jackson Gore Village spearheaded the way. When the owner’s of Okemo decided to expand the skiing and resort facilities, it was to the north they looked. They obtained a long term lease on the adjacent mountain and purchased the land at the bottom to accommodate the Jackson Gore Inn and Village. First came the skiing, with a total of 30% more skiable terrain and trails that are steeper and longer than exist anywhere else on the mountain. Of course superior snowmaking and grooming is an Okemo standard. As the trails were being cut, plans and permits for the Jackson Gore Inn were being developed. All the trails would lead down to the Village with the Inn being the flagship of the area. Of course an Inn does not make a village and in the plans was a recreation center. Now available is the Spring House which includes an indoor lap pool, kid’s pool and slide, racquetball and wallyball, a complete exercise facility and multi-purpose room. Also part of the Jackson Gore Village is the Ice House. A covered ice rink that doubles as tennis courts and outdoor basketball during the summer months. The Village also includes the Adventure Zone, which includes a Zip Line tour, the Mountain Coaster, miniature golf and much more. The centerpiece of the Village is the Jackson Gore Inn…a ski on/ ski off, condominium hotel, that was marketed in quarter ownership. Within the Inn are all the pieces that make this another entry point to Okemo. It includes ski and repair shops, mountain services, base lodge and a variety of restaurants. Buy your lift tickets, arrange for lessons or day care, have lunch or dinner…it’s all here in the Jackson Gore Village. Adjacent to the Inn is the Adams House, another quarter ownership facility. Next to that is the Bixby House with opportunities for full ownership, luxury living! But all this is just the beginning to what is planned for the future. According to the Master Plan, eventually there will be a heated gondola that will take you literally a few steps from the Jackson Gore Inn to the top of Okemo peak. For the golf enthusiasts there will be a 9-hole executive course, again just steps from the Inn. Add to this a planned conference center and additional residences and you have the new Okemo Mountain Resort…a true 4-season playground for the entire family.

Through the years, Woodstock has benefitted by the kind stewardship of George Perkins Marsh, considered to be the father of conservation, Frederick Billings, a strong follower of Marsh’s teachings and Laurence Rockefeller. With great foresight and understanding, Woodstock is now the
