They offer same-day appointments as well as walk–ins. (Due to the pandemic, please call to verify walk-in availability). Mrs. Gumbs felt drawn to open her practice where she grew up, “I am a resident of Bowie, Maryland and grew up here in prince George’s County. In doing research and decided to open a medical practice, we saw there was a lack of this type of office in the area. A common complaint that I would get from patients at when I worked at other medical practices is that they had a primary care doctor, but they wouldn’t be able to get in for 6 weeks. She assesses social, environmental, family and workplace aspects when providing care. They offer an array of primary care services, “We do annual physicals, monitor chronic medical conditions such as high blood pressure, hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol. We do have a lab on-site and our labs are processed right here in the office. We also do preventative measures for patients. Based on age, we would refer them to get screenings such as mammograms and colonoscopies. Women may come in for well-woman examinations including breast exams and pap smears. We also offer a weight management program if it is needed. We would refer patients for exercise and stress management.” Mrs. Gumbs also provides an array of physicals and screenings including those needed for employment, to start school and college, attend camp and sports programs,

Mrs. Gumbs wants to let the community know that that the practice is open and available to receive patients for many medical concerns that do not need to be seen in the Emergency Room. “When patients go to the ER, it can often be extremely expensive with wait times from 4 to 6 hours or more. We can do same-day appointments as well as tele-health appointments where you can be seen in the comfort of your own home.” “We found that many people are neglecting their health due to lack of quality health care, accessibility, ease of securing appointments, and financial constraints. Zucchini, Ricotta & Basil Pasta INGREDIENTS

1. 2.

1 small onion, finely diced 2 pounds zucchini, sliced into 1/4-inch-thick pieces (for larger zucchini, cut in half lengthwise before slicing) Salt and pepper

3.

2 garlic cloves, minced, or 2 tablespoons chopped green garlic

4.

1 ounce basil, about 2 cups loose leaves 1 pound ziti or other dry pasta

5.

8 ounces ricotta, about 1 cup Pinch of crushed red pepper Zest of 1 lemon 2 ounces grated Parmesan, pecorino or a mixture, about 1 cup, plus more for serving

16 | July 2020

6.

Firstly, start a pot of water on to boil. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the onions and a dash of garlic in 3 tablespoons olive oil until softened, 5 to 8 minutes. Reduce heat as necessary to keep onions from browning. Add zucchini, season generously with salt and pepper, and continue cooking, stirring occasionally until rather soft, about 10 minutes. Turn off heat. Meanwhile, mash garlic, basil and a little salt into a rough paste. Stir in 3 tablespoons olive oil. Salt the pasta water well and put in the pasta, stirring. Boil per package instructions but make sure to keep pasta quite al dente. Drain pasta, reserving 1 cup of cooking water. Add cooked pasta to zucchini in skillet and turn heat to medium-high. Add 1/2 cup cooking water, then the ricotta, crushed red pepper and lemon zest, stirring to distribute. Check seasoning and adjust. Cook for 1 minute more. Mixture should look creamy. Add a little more pasta water if necessary. Add the basil paste and half the grated cheese and quickly stir to incorporate. Spoon pasta into warm soup plates and sprinkle with additional cheese. Serve immediately.

Orecchiette With Spicy Italian Sausage & Broccoli INGREDIENTS

INGREDIENTS

12 oz. orecchiette

1.

In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook orecchiette (according to package instructions). During the last 2 minutes of cooking, blanch broccoli. Remove broccoli, and reserve 1 cup cooking water. Drain pasta and set aside.

2.

In a large skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Add sausage and brown, stirring occasionally, until fully cooked through. Add 1 tablespoon butter and garlic, then season with a generous amount of black pepper. Cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.

3.

Add about ½ cup reserved pasta water and bring to a simmer. Add remaining 2 tablespoons butter then add broccoli and pasta, tossing to combine.

4.

Add Parmesan, lemon juice and zest, and red pepper flakes. Toss constantly until cheese begins to melt, removing skillet from heat when about half the cheese has melted. If sauce is too thick, loosen with more pasta water. Season with salt.

2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 1 lb. Broccoli florets 3 tbsp. butter, divided 1 lb ground spicy Italian sausage 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 1/2 c. freshly grated Parmesan Zest and juice of 1 lemon Pinch crushed red pepper flakes

So, for all month of July enjoy your favorite flavor at your local ice cream shops! Fried Chicken is one of the most popular comfort foods that have brought many people enjoyment over the years. The original dish was invented by the Scottish in the 1700’s. With the enslavement of West African people in America, others were introduced to seasonings that enhanced and enriched the flavor of the battered favorite. With well-known restaurants and fast food chains such as Popeye’s and KFC already popularized their fried chicken recipes, here are some local restaurants who also sell great fried chicken meals with amazing sides: Timothy Dean, Carolina Kitchen Bar & Grill, Milk & Honey Café, and Kitchen Cray.

Everyone needs a nice summer drink on a very hot day, and the beverage to solve that problem is—the daquiri. Originating from Cuba, daquiris have become a very popular drink that is served at most bars in restaurants across the nation. With various recreations of the drink, not only has it brought inventiveness to bars, happy hours and clubs, it has provided great memories between others. Make these at home for National Daquiri Day at visit local restaurants such as Colada Shop or Tara Thai for to-go pitchers.

It started with Island Spyce Juice. “I started the juice company in 2015before I met Gary. I was working as a paralegal, but I would make juices on the side. I thought to myself, “I could make a business out of this.” For several years, Peta-Gaye made Island Spyce Juice, but when she met Gary, he encouraged her to put her all into it. He told Peta-Gaye that they could really make the juice business succeed. Every month, Peta-Gaye would take two weeks off from her job to work on making all of the juices for Island Spyce Juice and supplying it to restaurants. Within two weeks-time, Gary and Peta-Gaye were delivering Island Spyce Juice to Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Virginia Beach. “We didn’t have a truck at first. Gary and I looked at each other and said we were going to make this work. We loaded up my little red car and drove up and down the coast. Restaurant owners would ask us why they had never heard of [our company] before. Gary would spend days on the road making deliveries, and I would stay on the phone with him all night long so he would stay awake while he was driving to different states,” Peta-Gaye said, “I would always worry when he was gone. Once he surprised me, he told me he wasn’t going to be able to make it home when the tires were punctured, but then he walked in the door.” All of the juices, drinks and teas are all natural with no preservatives. They are made with fresh, local ingredients handpicked from a farm in Annapolis. “My favorite juice is Strawberry, Cucumber & Turmeric. I started researching what was good for the body,” Peta-Gaye says, “ ’Our Baby’ is Sourberry, which is strawberry and sauerkraut infused together. We created it and invented it together.”

During all of their struggles to grow the juice business and get the restaurant off the ground, Peta-Gaye and Gary always worked as a team. They lift each other up and keep each other humble. They met 4 years ago and have come so far in such a short time. Seen as a power couple by those who know them, they support and balance one another. Not only have they grown Island Spyce Juice into a thriving business, they have started their own wildly popular restaurant, and have overcome challenges in the face of a pandemic. Peta-Gaye fondly remembers the first time she realized that Gary had a passion and a natural talent for cooking. He called and asked me what was wrong. I said I was sick and he told me was going to make me some soup. I said, “You can’t cook,” and he said, “Excuse me, I can cook.” When he dropped off the soup, it looked like something my grandmother would cook. My kids loved it. They said it was delicious and I should try it. When I tasted it, I was shocked. I texted him, “Who made this soup?” He said, “I told you I was going to cook for you.” Honestly, it tasted like what my grandparents make back home. It was so rich with pumpkin, chicken, dumplings, and yams.” Gary’s cooking style is one of the secrets to success for Getti’s Spyce Island. “I get my cooking from my mother she used to cook for captains on the ships. My father was a Chef at the National Airport in Jamaica and used to cook for Air Jamaica. That is where the passion comes from. My style of cooking is different from most people. I grew up using any types of plants, bell pepper, onion, thyme. We grind all of our own seasonings. We use fresh produce and we only use the best products,” Gary tells us, “I have to eat the food and I want it to be the best. Our motto is to spare no cost, but to do it right. Even though we are in the pandemic we are still doing. People love the food and they keep coming back. They come out because this reminds them of food from Jamaica. 90% of the things we use are from Jamaica. Not Caribbean, but straight from Jamaica. We want you to feel like when you come here, you feel at home.”

Getti’s Island Spyce Brings The True Taste of Jamaica to Bowie Getti’s Spyce Island officially opened on February 1. They continued with carry-out during the stay-at-home order. They already have strong customer base. People are really enjoying the food and are sharing their excitement. When it comes to their favorite dishes, everything they make is their favorite. “The Fully Loaded Steam Fish is one of the best dishes. The rice and peas is unlike anyone else’s. No one does it, the way that I do. We do a lot of things here; any type of shrimp, curry shrimp, coconut shrimp, jerk shrimp. We give you a wide variety of things that you don’t normally get anywhere else,” Gary says. Some of their other dishes include jerk chicken, curry chicken, oxtail, curry goat, brown stew pork, seafood dishes, pasta, soups, salads, desserts and more. Gary’s homemade jerk sauce is so highly requested that Getti’s Island Spyce is considering bottling and selling it to their loyal customers.

Humbly, we are trying to expand because we have these talents. We have children and we want to make life better for them. Everything in here, we have done to our perfection. Nothing comes out of the kitchen without Gary’s approval, we don’t send anything out without both of us tasting and making sure the dish is perfect,” Peta-Gaye says, “Same with the juice that I make. We are each other’s biggest critics. We pray to God and make sure we stay humble. We fight every day to stay where we are and stay together.” The last few months have given Peta-Gaye and Gary a chance to perfect their structure and organization of Getti’s Spyce Island. They have a passion for what they do and they continually push one another to do better. “We would like to thank everyone who has supported us and helped us through our struggles. We look at each other and know we are going to accomplish so much more going forward.”

BOWIE’S BEST BAR

Drop In At The Corner Lounge Article Alyson Turner

hen you think of your favorite local bar, you might think of a chain restaurant or a hotspot downtown. For some locals in Upper Marlboro, their favorite neighborhood bar is a hidden gem. Paul McDonald took over The Corner Lounge in 2013. It had been in the neighborhood since the 1940’s, but many people who lived around there drove right by it every day without ever giving it a second glance. When the previous owners were going to shut down, Paul decided to keep it going, “I was one of the few minorities who came here. I wanted to keep it a bar that the regulars could keep coming too. I never had any aspirations about owning or running my own bar. My main business is Supreme 30 | July 2020

Landscaping which I have owned for 19 years.” Paul says, “I felt that [this type of bar] was needed in Prince George’s County. It is not pretentious. It is your local watering hole, that you can come in, be yourself and relax.” “When I first took over the bar, Tracey was the manager was integral in the transition from the old to the new. At that time, it was a redneck bar. Now it is a more inclusive bar. It is a Cheers crowd during the day and after 6 p.m. it is like Wakanda. Even though it was the neighborhood bar before we took over, the folks that lived in the neighborhood never came here.” Customer and long-time friend, Tonya, agrees, “We are a mixed crowd,

black and white, anyone can hang out here. We have a few folks who have been here forever. Mr. Andy and Mr. Ralph are locals that came with the building. There is so much loyalty here. This is still their favorite spot. Paul has grown the business to be one of the best hidden spots in Upper Marlboro. If you want to unwind from a hard day at work, hang out with your boys, have a girls’ night out or a date, you can come here.” The Corner Lounge is known for its amazing chicken wings. There is Live Jazz on Thursday Nights. You can show off your singing talents on Tuesday and Friday nights. Monday night is Cigar Night, and a Dallas Cowboys fans’ hangout during NFL season.

Tonya says, “We invite all the NFL enthusiasts to drop by and watch the games. This is a local bar and the neighborhood’s favorite spot. All you need is a good attitude and enjoy yourself.” Once you visit The Corner Lounge you realize that you are going to come back. While the menu offers typical bar foods, they are known far and wide for their addictive Old Bay Chicken Wings.

“We have chicken wings that are the best in all of Prince George’s County, if not Maryland. I buy quality, jumbo wings and I know how to cook the wings. I was going through 400 lbs of chicken wings every few days prior to the start of the pandemic,” Paul tells us,” I have had people come in from the Eastern Shore and all the way from Charles County. People have gone out of town, met people from Maryland, and they are in New Orleans

talking about The Corner Lounge. People are addicted to these wings.” At The Corner Lounge, people are addicted to the atmosphere, the drinks, and the Old Bay Chicken Wings. “If you want to come in, have a shot or drink a beer, we are the perfect place. We keep it simple. Most of our business is through word of mouth – people come in, they like it, and they tell someone else. That is how the word spreads.”

Now, the only question is, what do they put in those wings?

Outdoor Dining Is In!

After being home for three long months, outdoor dining is all the rage. Here are a few outdoor dining spots in Downtown Annapolis and Bethesda Row. Restaurants have had to get creative with outdoor space. Where there used to be one table on the sidewalk, now sits an entire dining section. Local roads have been closed in order to allow restaurants to spread out and follow new laws and guidelines.
