“I remember the sound of the gravel under my feet, the soft gleam of the waxed oak staircase, I can hear the heavy front door closing behind me as I walk along the dark corridor and enter the kitchen, the only really brightly lit room in the house.”

SCALE ARE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A MAYOR PUBLIC PROJECT. IT'S ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES PRESENT A CHALLENGE TO THE CITY AND TO THE PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN THE AREA. IT'S HEIGHT AND LENGTH CAN OPPOSE TO THE URBAN FABRIC ADJACENT TO IT'S BACK IF THEIR CONNECTIONS ARE NOT TREATED PROPERLY.
NEIGHBOIRHOOD FROM THE REST OF THE CITY. THIS RECYCLING ZONE CAN BE CONNECTED TO THE NEW PROGRAM OF THE URBAN PARK
RELATIONSHIP TO HILL, HOUSES AND STREET HAS TO BE NEGOTIATED.
THE RIVER DIVIDES THE RESIDENTIAL AND INDUSTRIAL ZONES. THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER IS USED MAINLY FOR TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE AND LARGE SCALE INDUSTRIES. IN THIS CASE THE SEPARATION IS POSITIVE. THE RIVER CAN BECOME AEN ELEMENT OF PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE, TO BE LATER CONNECTED TO THE REST OF THE “BEAUTIFUL RIVER” INICIATIVE. THE RIVER BECOMES ALSO AN EDUCATIONAL TOOL GIVEN ITS IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE PROCESS OF OCCUPATION.
TWO LARGE TRANSPORTATION HUBS BRING PEOPLE FROM THE NEAR TOWNS AND WITHIN THE CITY. IT'S PROXIMITY IS AN ADVANTAGE THAT COULD SUPPORT THE IDEA OF THE SITE BECOMING AN URBAN PARK.

This illegal settlement was born in the neighborhood of Moravia, Medellin in the 50’s. People migrated from rural towns escaping from poverty and violence. They built their homes around and on top of an active city dump. 50 years later the city displaces 90% of the inhabitants of the hill in order to begin the renovation into an urban park. Thousands of families are forced to leave their homes and are moved to distant neighborhoods leaving a ruptured neighborhood.
Casa de la Memoria is a place to safeguard the collective memory of the displaced , as well as of those that remain.

THE MUSEUM IS A PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION OF THE MEMORY OF THE PLACE WITHIN THE CHANGING CONDITIONS OF THE HILL. MAKES REFERENCE TO THE PAST, THE SETTLEMENT THAT COVERED THE HILL AND THE FAMILIES THAT BUILT THEIR HOMES AND LIVES HERE. IT LOOKS TO THE SELF ORGANIZING SYSTEM PREVIOUSLY IN PLACE AND AIMS TO CREATE SPACES AT THE LEVEL OF PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SCALE. CREATES CORRIDORS OF ACTIVITY AND PLACES TO GATHER, WHERE THE MEMORY OF THE PLACE AND THE PEOPLE CAN RESIDE.

Casa de la Memoria is a mediator between an increasingly public infrastructure and the residential fabric that lays below. Its placement is strategic, as it sits near the entrance to public transportation and it culminates at the neighborhood access to the hill.
The building fits within the boundaries of preexisting houses; both inhabited and in ruins, as a reminder of what was there and the process of relocation. This building aims to connect the community and the visitors. It works as a series of exhibition and gathering spaces that ascend and descend with the terrain, allowing connections between a larger public activity and small residential events at the community level.
It’s programmatic requirements are divided between two main buildings. The Restaurant and Auditorium volume faces the public side of the hill, and it connects to the public transportation. The larger programmatic volume houses the exhibition spaces, meeting areas and library, and face the small scale of the neighborhood. These areas are meant to be mediators between the formal circulation of the visitors and the informal one of the inhabitants of Moravia. The terraces welcome the people to access the hill through the building and also become places of social interaction.

MATERIALITY IN MORAVIA
The construction type is mainly poured in place concrete. Some areas of the building require a steel structure in order to minimize the presence of columns. Three bracing blocks are created to support the loads of the main exhibition areas. These blocks are composed of steel members that brace against lateral and seismic forces. They are furthered protected by their encasement in concrete walls which also become an architectural element of the building. The large size of the blocks is also advantageous since it also serves MATERIALITY IN as means ofMORAVIA carrying serMATERIALITY IN MORAVIA vices and provide storage as well.

The materiality of the building is inspired by the texture and patch work of the structures that previously exihisted in the hill. The typical materials used in construction in Medellin are concrete and brick, but for the shacks that were built in the hill the main materials were reclaimed wood, corrugated metal and plastic bags. The combination of steel and concrete structure allows for a varied spatial configurations. The integration of traditional elements like clay roof tiles with lightweight steel members allow the building to relate to its context while reducing its cost.

The roofs are either landscaped or pitched in order to channel and store water. The arrangement of open vs solid walls allows for cross ventilation and passive cooling. Where needed air shafts have been designed in order to provide air circulation to specific interior spaces. Its facade protects the interiors from direct sun by a layering system of transparent glass, opaque glass panels and bamboo panels. All of these not only condition the interior environment but also relate to the users by allowing them to modify their configurations according to their needs.
La Casa de la Memoria wants to feel warm and inviting by having a human scale that is approachable by all. The building uses a familiar element like concrete to create different textures and configurations, while integrating traditional and modern building techniques. A
