Casa de la Memoria is located in Moravia, a small, dense urban settlement in Medellin, Colombia. Moravia is known for its garbage hill and the complex urban fabric that took over it. This hill (Morro) was the cityβs official dump from 1970 to 1984. Itβs central location, close to the river and the railroad, proved to be a good βnew startβ for families that migrated from the rural towns due to poverty and violence between the 1900βs and the 1950βs. The new inhabitants depended on the decaying garbage. They built their homes using repurposed materials, and fed their children with the income from the recycled garbage, sometimes fed them the actual garbage. While this informal settlement grew, so did they garbage piles in the hill, reaching 18 acres in size and 140β in height. By the time the landfill stopped its operations, the hill had become the home of 17,000 people. From this point on, the hill was known as a dirty, poor and dangerous place, even though tress grew over the garbage and families enjoyed their life in the steep land. The community organized itself to improve their living conditions, the Morro became an icon of hope and change. Even though the neighborhood strengthen, the rest of the city still judged its shabby houses, narrow steep stairs, and their humble culture. As a result of a fire at the site on 2006, the City government began a slow evacuation of the hill in 2007, arguing the poor health conditions of the site. Most of the families have been displaced to different neighborhoods, only 80 families remain in the hill. The City has proposed the Morro as a remediated urban park. The people of Moravia, current and former inhabitants, beg for the government to not let the memory of their friends and family die with the new park. They need to remember their struggle and accomplishments, their past and their present. They wonder where their collective memory will rest once the government changes the face of the hill. They need a space to remember, to educate themselves and others, and to create new memories that wil strengthen their culture. They need a physical manifestation of their emotional ownership of the hill.

THE GARBAGE DUMP IS ACTIVE AND THE SETTLEMENT IS ITS BOUNDARY
1984
DAYS BEFORE THE CLOSING OF THE GARBAGE DUMP. THE ONLY UNOCCUPIED AREA OF THE HILL WAS THE TOP, WHICH WAS STILL USED FOR DUMPING.
2005
AFTER THE CITY DUMP WAS CLOSED, THERE WAS MORE IMMIGRATION TO THE HILL. THE INHABITANTS WERE FORCED TO FIND OTHER WAYS OF EMPLOYMENT BESIDES RECYCLING. THE HILL WENT THROUGH SEVERAL YEARS OF VIOLENCE DUE TO THE LACK OF OPPORTUNITIES AND THE NOW DENSER LIVING CONDITIONS.
2011

THE CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT CENTER IS CURRENTLY THE CORE OF MORAVIA'S CULTURAL ACTIVITY. DUE TO ITS LOCATION, PROGRAM, ARCHITECTURE AND MANAGEMENT IT HAS BECOME A TOOL FOR CHANGE. USEFUL IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A SEQUENCE OF CULTURAL EXPRESSION BY THE COMMUNITY.
SOCCER COURT AND HIGHSCHOOL ARE PART OF THE CULTURAL CORES OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD. THEY HAVE BECOME PLACES FOR COMMUNITY EVENTS. THEIR CLOSE LOCATION TO THE RIVER, TRAIN, HILL AND CREEK IS IMPORTANT.
THE HILL IS THE ICON OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD. IT'S STRATEGIC LOCATION AND SCALE ARE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A MAYOR PUBLIC PROJECT. IT'S ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES PRESENT A CHALLENGE TO THE CITY AND TO THE PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN THE AREA. IT'S HEIGHT AND LENGTH CAN OPPOSE TO THE URBAN FABRIC ADJACENT TO IT'S BACK IF THEIR CONNECTIONS ARE NOT TREATED PROPERLY.
PLANNED LINEAR PARK THAT DELINEATES CREEK AND CREATES A PERIMETER CIRCULATION. BRINGS CIRCULATION FROM SOCCER COURT AND SCHOOL TO CULTURAL CENTER. STRATEGIC LOCATION IN RELATIONSHIP TO RIVER, HILL, CULTURAL CENTERS AND CREEK.
THESE STREETS ARE HEAVYLY OCCUPIED BY PEDESTRIANS. THEY FILTER THE PERIMETRY CRICULATION AND BRING ACTIVITY TOWARDS THE INSIDE OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD. THEY PRESENTS SEVERAL CHALLENGING CONDITIONS, LIKE THEIR NARROW PROPORTIONS, LACK OF SIDEWALKS, LACK OF PLANTING AND ONE WAY VEHICULAR CIRCULATION. THEY CAN ALSO BE STRATEGIC IN CONNECTING THE HILL TO THE REST OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD.
PLANNED SPACE FOR PUBLIC ACTIVITIES. INTEGRATION OF PEDESTRIAN/BIKING/PRIVATE AND PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. WIDE STREETS WITH DEFINED LANDSCAPE AND GROUND STRATEGY INCREASE COMMERCIAL AND CULTURAL ACTIVITY. DIRECT CONNECTION TO PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE TO THE SOUTH. IT CAN BECOME A BOUNDARY DUE TO ITS SCALE.
THESE THREE PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS BECOME THE GATE TO MORAVIA. THEY WILL EVENTUALLY BRING THE PUBLIC CIRCULATION TO THE SITE, AS PART OF THAT CIVIC PROMENADE
THE ALLEYWAYS CREATED AS A RESULT OF THE PROXIMITY BETWEEN THE HILL AND HOUSES ARE CURRETNLY UNDER UTILIZED, SMALL AND DIRTY SPACES. THEY CAN BE OPPORTUNITIES FOR INFORMAL AND SMALL SCALE GATHERING AREAS. THEIR LANGUAGE, PROGRAM AND RELATIONSHIP TO HILL, HOUSES AND STREET HAS TO BE NEGOTIATED.
TWO LARGE TRANSPORTATION HUBS BRING PEOPLE FROM THE NEAR TOWNS AND WITHIN THE CITY. IT'S PROXIMITY IS AN ADVANTAGE THAT COULD SUPPORT THE IDEA OF THE SITE BECOMING AN URBAN PARK.
THIS STREET EDGE IS OCCUPIED BY RECYCLING FACILITES AND OTHER SMALL INDUSTRIES, IS POORLY PAVED AND WITHOUTH SIDEWALKS. THEREFORE IS NOT BUSY WITH DAY TO DAY ACTIVITIES. THIS IN COMBINATION WITH THE PRESENCE OF THE BRIDGE SEPARATES THE NEIGHBOIRHOOD FROM THE REST OF THE CITY. THIS RECYCLING ZONE CAN BE CONNECTED TO THE NEW PROGRAM OF THE URBAN PARK
THE RIVER DIVIDES THE RESIDENTIAL AND INDUSTRIAL ZONES. THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER IS USED MAINLY FOR TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE AND LARGE SCALE INDUSTRIES. IN THIS CASE THE SEPARATION IS POSITIVE. THE RIVER CAN BECOME AEN ELEMENT OF PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE, TO BE LATER CONNECTED TO THE REST OF THE βBEAUTIFUL RIVERβ INICIATIVE. THE RIVER BECOMES ALSO AN EDUCATIONAL TOOL GIVEN ITS IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE PROCESS OF OCCUPATION.

OBJECTIVES - Narrate the story of its people and honors their will and determination. Provide spaces that are conducive to the remembrance of the occupation of the βMorroβ. - Educate the visitors on the physical history of the site. The process of it becoming a landfill, the occupation and the process of remediation, and all the challenges that these present. - Allow for ethnographic research on the background of the people that lived in the βMorroβ as well as the rest of Moravia. - Strengthen the community by providing spaces to cultivate the collective memory of Moravia and allowing for cultural manifestations. - Manifest the innovation and development of the city, while emphasizing on the need to coexist with the more rustic and undeveloped systems in the urban fabric.

Understanding that there are no boundaries between these categories; that a painting can educate, remember and create, there is still an attempt to organize in order to later disorganize. What starts as one event branches out and becomes a complex network. These categories interact with one another in an informal way . As the events that happened in Moravia have been documented, the peopleΓ’€™s response to them have enabled them to create memories within the community, these are the ones that allow them to remember the past. As the neighborhood changes there needs to be a space for the creation of new and positive collective memory that is grounded in their history but that is a result of their culture. EDUCATE

MUSEUM AS A COLLECTOR OF NON-LINEAR EVENTS
An analogy of history as a network of events, memories and points of view that differ but ultimately help construct meaning. What in plan looks like similar and parallel circulations, later develops to be different in section as they branch out towards other spaces both on the park and the building. In this scheme the three exhibition types are being carved by the circulation of the park.
SCHEME 1 PROS: Located at one of the entrances to the park. The placement on the site allows for great sun exposure and itΓ’€™s topographical qualities are ideal. The program is organized according to circulation. It mediates between city and neighborhood.
CONS: Somewhat narrow site that will result in either a long linear building or a smaller but more massive one. Since it sits where several paths meet, the building must either reroute them or incorporate them into the design. The branching circulation in section can be explored more to allow for it to begin modifying the condition of the spaces.
CASA DE LA MEMORIA de MORAVIA un museo etnografico
MUSEUM AS A PLACE OF APPROPIATION OF MEMORIES
The museum appropiates the negative spaces left by the traces of the past. It anchors itself between the main circulation of the park and the neighboring residential context. It meanders in an attempt to respond to the houses that frame it. Remember becomes the core of the programs both in plan and section. It's adjacency to the ruins of a few houses delineates the area where educate and remember meet.
SCHEME 2 PROS: ItΓ’€™s location within abandoned and existing houses allows the building to create a close relationship with the past but also the future of Moravia. The houses that flank the building bring both vehicular and pedestrian circulation. Its main entrance is located where many paths of the park meet. The adjacency of Remember and the abandoned houses is a great opportunity.
CONS: Very difficult sloping conditions. Sun exposure is not ideal specially in the afternoon. Due to the slopes, the internal circulation can become very fragmented. The proximity to the houses will present a structural difficulty.
CASA DE LA MEMORIA de MORAVIA un museo etnografico
MEMORY AS A RESULT OF SOCIAL RESPONSE
Memory as a result of social response In this scheme the circulation of the park creates one large space which will house the remember program. In this scheme this program becomes more informal and open and it feeds from the adjacent exhibitions located at the sides. As the center of the building, this space hopes to gather a lot of activity which is important in building collective memory in the neighborhood.
SCHEME 3 PROS: Ideal location in terms of slope, sun and circulation. It engages the site from the ground floor of the park, where the outdoor exhibition would happen. Its main entrance is in front of entrance to the park aswell. The adjacency of Remember and the abandoned houses is a great opportunity.
CONS: Smalles footprint of all options. The section needs to relate better to the concept and the plan.
CASA DE LA MEMORIA de MORAVIA un museo etnografico
The building fits within the boundaries of preexisting houses; both inhabited and in ruins, as a reminder of what was there and the process of relocation. This building aims to connect the community and the visitors. It works as a series of exhibition and gathering spaces that ascend and descend with the terrain, allowing connections between a larger public activity and small residential events at the community level.

Itβs programmatic requirements are divided between two main buildings. The Restaurant and Auditorium volume faces the public side of the hill, and it connects to the public transportation. The larger programmatic volume houses the exhibition spaces, meeting areas and library, and face the small scale of the neighborhood. These areas are meant to be mediators between the formal circulation of the visitors and the informal one of the inhabitants of Moravia. The terraces welcome the people to access the hill through the building and also become places of social interaction.

The construction type is mainly poured in place concrete. Some areas of the building require a steel structure in order to minimize the presence of columns. Three bracing blocks are created to support the loads of the main exhibition areas. These blocks are composed of steel members that brace against lateral and seismic forces. They are furthered protected by their encasement in concrete walls which also become an architectural element of the building. ELEVATION STUDIES The large size of the blocks is also advantageous since it also serves as means of carrying services and provide storage as well.
The materiality of the building is inspired by the texture and patch work of the structures that previously exihisted in the hill. The typical materials used in construction in Medellin are concrete and brick, but for the shacks that were built in the hill the main materials were reclaimed wood, corrugated metal and plastic bags. The combination of steel and concrete structure allows for a varied spatial configurations. The integration of traditional elements like clay roof tiles with lightweight steel members allow the building to relate to its context while reducing its cost.

The roofs are either landscaped or pitched in order to channel and store water. The arrangement of open vs solid walls allows for cross ventilation and passive cooling.
