The CHOOCHOO Interview

CHOO CHOO is a new underground GaragePop Band from Switzerland. Drawing influences from 60-ies Teenage Beat to 70-ies Soul totoday’s Garage Rock. These Kids from Berne have brewed a fresh blend of Steam Powered GarageRock. I talked to Dan, their Singer.

And now with Sam (the Drummer) back after a 1/2year, which Location would you dream to play with your new Sound? Hm, I guess there’s no real dream-location... But, Debaser in Stockholm would be nice. Or CBGB in N.Y. the usual Rock’n’Roll Dream!

Hey Dan, for how long does ChooChoo now exist and how did you Guys came up? ChooChoo are around for about 2 years now. Yannick, Sam & I used to play in a Band called Glowfi before. When we broke off in 2003 we knew that we wanna do something new together. Glowfi was, ClassicRock, like a lots of Guitar Solos and most important, it had to be laud! With ChooChoo we wanted to do something new; less guitarwall, less distortion, but more melody, more groove and to find the Pop-appeal! So from the start on we knew we also wanted an organ, but it was pretty hard to find someone with the same taste in Music! So the first 1 1/2 year we played as a trio..

Ok, let´s image you’d play CBGB, who should be on Stage with you guys? The Strollers! But unfortunatly they aren’t anymore! The Maharajas or The Cynics!

But now you are happy with Lili, and released your Debut 7inch, right? Yeah, exactly! It was about a half year ago, when we jamed for the first time with Lili, and felt very compfortable. An organ is something very fine, it gives the sound a new dimension. And yeah, “4 Smashing Hits” is out now! We did it all by our own..we have our own Recorlabel now... haha... WeMakeOurOwnRecords. We recorded in March 2006 as a Trio. You can buy them at: www.soundflat.de www.flight13.com or over www.myspace.com/choochootheband

Nice one. If you could choose, who should cover one of your Songs? Hm, dono..I ain’t a friend of Covers, really. Next Question please.. Which ´Big´ Rock-Record isn’t that great anyway? There are a few.. honestly! Like Velvet Underground and Nico or all Ramones Records. Your Choice on Best-Records? • The Strollers – Falling Right Down & Captain of My Ship • Caesars – Paper Tigers • Monebrother – To Die Alone • The Nerves – 25th Anniversary 10“ • Beatles – Beatles For Sale Where will be the ChooChoo on 2010? Hopefully rocking a Stage near You!! We got one big goal; we wanna play, play, play.

IN THE EYE OF THE ENEMY “It all took place during a job I had for the film agency I’ve recently worked for! We had to produce a tour documentary of a rock band! So on a Friday night, we got, with our video equipment, in one of the city’s best Rock-venues! After recording the sound check part, and a bit of the backstage we started to realize that the band we were working for, was pretty lame, like Bon Jovi wanna-be rock music! After the first half of the concert, we had to switch tape & camera, so I got a short break. I was in the middle of all the fans, a little bit higher, so I could have a good look at them! I turned around to face them; they were all staring at me, as well as at the stage behind me! While looking at their faces, I got shocked: it was like a cold shower on my neck! What I saw were the same faces that we know all too well... the ones that scream down from windows, stop exactly in front of the skatespot, come down and take note of the car number plate during night sessions, call the cops… You know, our enemies!! So, there I stood, in front of them… and they all smiled, danced, even sang along! I couldn´t believe it… I was so disgusted and angry… looking at them enjoying themselves! And the best part was they didn´t even dressed differently, as one would expect for a party. No… they stood there exactly as we see them during our skatemissions: as if a huge UFO came, took them all over the country and put them in this huge alley! My last thought, before turning back my shoulder and work again, was, damn it, right now I should be outside, skating the street… hustle free!!” =) The Boss
