The breathability of DRY-LINE® is increased by the special way in which the micro-fibres are knitted to the Sympatex® membrane. They form an air-space between the membrane and the inside of the boot liner. Because the micro-fibres are springy and flexible, perspiration is pumped vertically through the air space and out of the boot by the natural movement of the foot when walking, as well as wicking horizontally across the membrane. The DRY-LINE® system is much more than just a waterproof membrane. It makes Boreal Mountain and Trekking boots simply the most breathable, durable and comfortable boots you'll ever wear! SYMPATEX® 337 Profesional: The membrane (1/66 millimetre in thickness) is composed of 70% Polyester, which provides it's waterproofness, and 30% Polyether, which provides it's breathability.

In 1979, BOREAL designed and produced the final prototype of the legendary style, “FIRÉ”, named after being used in a new route at “Mallo Firé” in Riglos (Huesca, Spain). Mallo Firé is a spectacular rock spire nearly 300 meters tall of fragile and reddish conglomerate rock where some of the hardest routes in Spain and Europe have been opened. BOREAL was born as a specialized climbing and mountaineering footwear manufacturer in 1975. The director and founder, Jesús García López, produced the first rock shoes made in Spain, including for the first time in the world, a flat and very sticky outsole. This was the first style he developed; it was called “El Capitan”. In the mid to late 1970’s, BOREAL pursued a research and development programme with the aim of improving the performance of rock shoes. A key goal was to develop a new climbing rubber with not only the highest levels of friction but also the durability, hardness and abrasion resistance necessary to ensure unmatched performance.

In 1981, The Gallego brothers used the Fire to open the first non-American route to El Capitan, called “Mediterraneo”. In the days after their ascent, they showed the other climbers at Camp 4 the Firé and the incredible sticky rubber that BOREAL had made. From this moment on, the world’s best climbers began to climb with BOREAL products. In the 1980’s, BOREAL continued to develop revolutionary styles leading to the confirmation of grade 8 and later the opening of grade 9 in the early 90’s. The evolution of climbing has coincided with the progression of BOREAL product developments, such as the introduction of new materials and manufacturing technologies realised by our laboratory’s research and development and design departments.

After years of research and field testing, BOREAL is proud to launch a new rubber into the market.

This development has resulted in the stickiest rubber on the market so far, finding the perfect mix of edging, durability, and the remarkable ability to maintain its performance at different temperatures. Once again through technical advancements, Boreal offers climbers around the world the tools needed to make previously impossible climbs a reality.

Shoe fit A rock climbing shoe should fit "comfortably tight" throughout and never cause pain at any one particular point (especially in the toe box). Shoes fitted in this manner will stretch and produce a personalized fit after a while. Boots that produce painful "pressure points" usually won't stretch out after the initial breaking in period. THE LAST The most important factor affecting the shoe's fit is the shape of the last, the model "foot" around which the shoe is constructed. Boreal incorporates certain anatomical shapes in its lasts to achieve various effects depending upon what each shoe is designed for (technical edging, sport climbing, competition, long routes, etc.). The two most important characteristics of the last are the amount of "Flex" it has and the shape of its "Sole".

Flex Patterns

FLEXED The traditional flexed last shape duplicates the correct anatomical position of the foot while climbing. This last shape is the most comfortable of all last shapes for general climbing purposes as it puts the foot into its natural climbing position without exerting excessive pressures on the foot.

CAMBERED The cambered, or reverse curve, last duplicates the position of the foot in a flat, unflexed position. This last shape boosts the edging capabilities of the flexible slip-lasted shoe without the need to incorporate stiff midsoles which would destroy the shoe's sensitivity.

Sizes

Slip-lasting The slip-lasting method of construction involves sewing the leather uppers to the leather insole to create a kind of "sock". The sock is then slipped over the last and the midsole (if desired), rands, and soles are then glued on. This method of construction produces shoes that are lightweight, flexible, and very sensitive. Slip-lasting is prefered for cambered lasts because stiff midsoles are not necessary to obtain edging performance and would destroy sensitivity with these types of shoes. Slip lasted shoes are perfect for sport climbing, steep faces, and indoor climbing. The midsoles are very thin and provide incredible sensitivity and flexiblity.

Board-lasting Board-lasting involves placing the laced uppers over the top of the last and wrapping them underneath and gluing them to the preplaced insole attached to the bottom of the last. Another midsole then fills in the center of the sole so that the rands and sole can be glued on. Because the insole is mounted inside the shoe, this method produces shoes with more integrity and durability. Board-lasting is utilized with semi-flexed lasts because when the insole is mounted inside the uppers, the shoes already have sufficient stiffness for edging and are more comfortable to wear. Board-lasted shoes are great for edging routes, long faces, and crack climbs.
