The Doolittle Raiders Army, Navy teamed up on attack on Japan’s mainland following America’s morale slump in wake of Pearl Harbor By Col. Terry Yon For Veteran Voice In the spring of 1942, America’s morale slumped after the Pearl Harbor attack and numerous other Japanese successes. The nation desperately needed a victory. Capt. Francis S. Low, a U.S. Navy submariner, suggested an attack against the heart of Japan using U.S. Army Air Forces medium bombers flown from a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier. The difficult task of training for and leading the raid went to Lt. Col. James H. “Jimmy” Doolittle, a brilliant aviator and compelling leader. The top secret plan called for the B-25s to take off about 450 miles from Japan, bomb selected targets at such locations as Yokohama and Tokyo, and then fly another 1,600 miles to friendly airfields in mainland China. The operation was risky -- medium bombers had never been flown from a carrier, and sailing so far into enemy territory endangered the U.S. Navy task force. At dawn on April 18, 1942, the task force, commanded by Admiral William “Bull” Halsey, was steaming west through rough Pacific seas,

Murphy addresses big issues during Treasure Coast visit Newly elected representative discusses veterans issues, environmental policy, gun control By Nicole Rodriguez For Veteran Voice As part of a late December tour of his district, newly elected U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy met with local officials, visited his new offices
and addressed issues related to Martin and St. Lucie counties. The district 18 congressman said he’ll work with local leaders in both Martin and St. Lucie counties to make positive change. Murphy said a key priority will be improvements to the 110-mile Herbert Hoover Dike, which borders 730 square miles of Lake Okeechobee and affects not only Martin and St. Lucie counties, but the rest of the state. According to Martin County’s website, the
Army Corps of Engineers reported “a potential failure situation is developing. A dike failure may eventually occur, but preplanned actions may moderate or alleviate failure.” Murphy said he will also work closely with Sen. Bill Nelson to immediately push forward Everglades-related legislation. “It’s really about the cooperation amongst the counties here locally,” Murphy said. “We

MURPHY from page 1 have so many great projects going, but sometimes when you get spread so thin, nothing gets finished. Right now we need to prioritize ... The dike is a priority.” Murphy said routinely dredging the St. Lucie Inlet is imperative. “I plan on meeting with them (Army Corps of Engineers) early and often and getting a good relationship there,” Murphy said. “(We need to get) a lot of the inlets, the smaller inlets, in sort of a group and a consensus and approach the Army Corps and say, ‘We need this dredged every three to four years.’” “We need to get into a rotation and make sure we’re on the calendar so we don’t have to keep going through this argument and this debate,” Murphy said. Murphy, who was recently appointed to the Financial Services Committee, said he’ll do everything in his power to improve housing in his district, which spans parts of St. Lucie, Martin and Palm Beach counties. “Mostly what the committee is going to deal with in the next congress is housing and that affects the whole district,” Murphy said. “Florida was hit hard as almost any state in the country with the foreclosure crisis and this district

Connecticut. He said the key to preventing another tragedy is a combination of mental health care and gun control. “As public servants, as government officials, we have to protect
the most vulnerable,” Murphy said. “It is inexcusable that 6-year-olds have been exposed to this sort of tragedy and we continually have these disasters in our country.” “How do you solve it? There are a couple of different areas. I think it starts with the mental health aspect. We can’t cut funding to mental health institutes. We need to make sure everyone has access to treatment,” Murphy said. “We’ve got to look at the family and we need more responsibility with gun owners and non-gun owners. We’ve got to look at the availability of these large magazine clips and the loopholes at gun shows and on the Internet.” During his visit, Murphy announced he will occupy former Rep. Tom Rooney’s downtown Stuart office and will headquarter St. Lucie County from a 745-square-foot space inside of Port St. Lucie City Hall. Murphy also met with Martin County Commissioner John Haddox, a Navy veteran who served for 20 years. Before his election this year, Haddox was a government liaison for the Veterans Council of Martin County and is a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1041. The pair discussed veterans affairs in

“Waggle or no Waggle”.....
It is better to waggle the club before taking it away from the ball. Yes of course you don’t want to get in the Sergio Garcia wagle or re-gripping like he did for a while, but a waggle that Jason Dufner uses is beautiful! The waggle sets you in motion and it’s always better to continue a motion than to originate one.The next time you practice try a wagle or move your feet up and down to just give you a little motion and eliminate the tension in your setup and swing. The worst thing is to become static over the ball. No motion = more tension. More motion = less tension. Enjoy your new relaxed swing!!

By Patrick McCallister For Veteran Voice It breaks Army veteran Dick “Lovi” Lovisone’s heart when he sees homeless children in the nation he defended, so he’s doing something about it. “The thing that really, really got me was I don’t know how a family lives in the woods with a 4-year-old kid,” he said. “I don’t know how you do that. I was in the Army, I know how to live in the woods, but I don’t know how to live in the woods with a family.” Lovisone is president of Family Promise of Brevard, an organization aiming to help area homeless families get back on their feet. The longtime soldier was a lieutenant colonel when he retired. Tom Dame, treasurer, said Lovisone has used skills

Dick Lovisone practiced in military leadership to organize the aspiring affiliate of the national Family Promise organization.
“(He) kind of brought stability to the (local) group,” Dame said. “Not just to the board, but the whole group. DOOLITTLE from page 3 reach their designated airfields. One by one, they ditched at sea, bailed out, or crash-landed in China (one crew diverted to the Soviet Union). Fortunately, with the help of the Chinese people, most of the Doolittle Raiders safely reached friendly forces (Japanese forces later executed as many as 250,000 Chinese citizens in retaliation for this assistance). When authorities released news of the attack, American morale zoomed from the depths to which it plunged following Japan’s many early victories. Although the brilliant strike caused relatively
little physical damage, it stunned the Japanese population -- their embarassed leaders had promised the mainland would never be attacked. The Japanese transferred four fighter groups from the front lines to defend mainland Japan. To prevent future American attacks on the homeland, Admiral Yamamoto ordered the disastrous attack on Midway Island, which became the turning point in the war in the Pacific. Retired U.S. Army Col. GIBSON from page 1 tion ever formed from all five U.S. uniformed services. Retirement from the Army didn’t mean “R&R” for Col. Gibson. He was soon appointed Director of Bands and Professor of Music at the Schwob School of Music of Columbus State University. Gibson served there for 16 years, developing one of the finest wind ensembles in the southeast. He was the only band director in the state to ever have been voted Professor Emeritus by the Georgia Board of Regents. Today, the rehearsal hall at the River Center for the Performing Arts of Columbus State University bears his name. Not surprisingly, Gibson was inducted into the National Hall of Fame for Distinguished Band Conductors in 2004. An elected
member of the prestigious American Bandmaster’s Association, Gibson today serves on the board of several important musical organizations. But he may be unaware of his greatest musical legacy. Thirty-year-old Aaron Collins, artistic director for the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra, explains. “Hal Gibson is a professional inspiration for musicians and conductors everywhere. Players snap to attention when he steps up to the podium. There’s an energy and discipline that he communicates as a conductor. I feel personally honored whenever I share a stage with him.” Since 1993, Gibson and his wife, Marie, have called Indian River Colony Club home. Gibson continues to conduct the Symphonic Wind Ensemble of the Melbourne Municipal Band and the Colony Singers of Indian River Colony Club.

center. According to the Florida Department of Children and Families’ Council on Homelessness 2012 report, there were about 1,900 homeless people in Brevard County in 2011.Throughout Florida, the council reported that about 55,000 homeless were counted in 2011, which was down about 2,000 from the previous year. However, several counties that had given estimated homeless numbers in 2010 didn’t for 2011 by the time the annual report was compiled. There likely wasn’t a dramatic drop in homelessness from 2010 to 2011. The council reported that Brevard had a sharp increase in homelessness over 2009 and 2010. Those years, the council estimated there were about 1,200 homeless. The council’s report also said there were about 90 homeless students in the Brevard schools in 2010 and 2012. However, the number of homeless children and youths is higher than that.
The report reads, “Not included in these counts are those families and children who have lost their own place to live, and are doubled up in overcrowded housing, living with family members or friends. For the school year 2010 – 2011, 56,680 children of school age were identified as homeless by the local school districts. Family homelessness is the fastest growing segment of the homeless population in our
country.” Florida has the third-largest population of homeless persons in the union. Lovisone said those wishing to help Family Promise of Brevard can call him at (321) 610-8453. “I would love to see veterans (volunteer),” he said. “It’s for (easing) homelessness, and if you have a heart for this, give us a call.” Family Promise of Brevard is separate from Promise in Brevard, an organization that’s seeking to build housing and employment opportunities for people with disabilities and special needs to live independently.

sponsoring religious organizations. Lovisone said he wanted, and recently got, 13. Additionally, the national organization requires an incoming affiliate to have a third of its projected firstyear budget in the bank, and have secure funding sources on deck. “About $113,000 for our first year — we think that’s bare bones,” Lovisone said. “We need a third of that to start. We need about $25,000 more; we have about $13,000 in the bank.” Family Promise of Brevard has a church that’s agreed to temporarily house homeless families, Faith “Viera” Lutheran in Rockledge, but it also needs a van to take them to a base center. “The base center is where the family goes in the daytime to look for jobs and apartments and housing,” Lovisone said. “You’ve got to have a means to move the family twice a day — to move the family from the church to the base center and from the base center to the church.” Grace Fellowship Church in Rockledge has provided a base center, a home on Murrell Road that’s getting needed equipment and remodeling to be a base

Veteran Voice is a weekly publication designed to provide information to and about veterans to veterans and to the broader community. Veterans are an integral part of their Florida communities, which currently have individual organizations of their own, such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Vietnam Veterans of America and many other groups with a narrow focus, but no convenient way to connect to a wider population of veterans and to the community in general within a limited geographic area, their community. The mission of Veteran Voice is to publish a weekly source of information that will provide, in one place, a listing of resources available to veterans, articles about changes in policies or organizations affecting veterans and events of interest to veterans as well as articles about veterans of interest to the general public. Veteran Voice LLC is organized as a partnership of experienced newspaper executives with an interest in veterans and in the communities of Florida veterans and friends. VV is a start-up intended to address a perceived lack of information readily available to veterans on programs and policies affecting them and objective reporting of veteran affairs to the public. To our knowledge, and based on comments from leaders of local veterans organizations, there was no media or website currently meeting this need until the launch of VeteranVoice. We hope you agree, and will support this publication with your subscription. Without subscriptions there will be a limited number of people we can help, without which this mission will not be realized. As part of our commitment to supporting local veteran communities, we will donate 10 percent of our profits each quarter to qualified veteran charities recommended by you, our readers and subscribers. Please let us know what you think by emailing editor@veteranvoiceweekly.com or mailing your comments to us at 1919 S.W. South Macedo Blvd., Port St. Lucie, FL 34984.
