St. Lucie veterans continue calls to keep former services coordinator Patrick McCallister

St. Lucie veterans haven’t given up on Donna Carlsen. The county terminated the former veteran services coordinator on Aug. 7. At a recent St. Lucie County Commission meeting, Air Force veteran Roy Brewer gave commissioners a stinging what for over the termination. Dozens of veterans were on hand to reinforce his message. “She’s a veteran’s veteran,” Brewer said in a phone interview after the meeting. “She was in (Operation Restore Hope), and a lot of people don’t know that.” Restore Hope, Somalia, was a humanitarian mission from 1992 to 1994. It’s best remembered for the Battle of Mogadishu, which is also called Black Hawk Down. Brewer said after talking to county staff and others about the termination, he’s convinced Carlsen’s termination was about office politics, not wrongdoing.

Despite extensive experience in management, Highwood was unable to find an employer willing to hire him. He’s a wheelchair user because of transverse myelitis. Additionally, he has advanced hearing loss that affects his ability to hear over telephones, which caused him to lose work managing a plumbing company. The Paralyzed Veterans of America estimates that 65 to 85 percent of veterans with catastrophic disabilities who’d like and are able to work can’t find jobs.

Veteran Voice is a weekly publication designed to provide information to and about veterans to veterans and to the broader community. Veterans are an integral part of their Florida communities, which currently have individual organizations of their own, such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Vietnam Veterans of America and many other groups with a narrow focus, but no convenient way to connect to a wider population of veterans and to the community in general within a limited geographic area, their community. The mission of Veteran Voice is to publish a weekly source of information that will provide, in one place, a listing of resources available to veterans, articles about changes in policies or organizations affecting veterans and events of interest to veterans as well as articles about veterans of interest to the general public. Veteran Voice LLC is organized as a partnership of experienced newspaper executives with an interest in veterans and in the communities of Florida veterans and friends. Veteran Voice is a start-up intended to address a perceived lack of information readily available to veterans on programs and policies affecting them and objective reporting of veteran affairs to the public. To our knowledge, and based on comments from leaders of local veterans organizations, there was no media or website currently meeting this need until the launch of Veteran Voice. We hope you agree, and will support this publication with your subscription. Without subscriptions there will be a limited number of people we can help, without which this mission will not be realized. As part of our commitment to supporting local veteran communities, we will donate 10 percent of our profits each quarter to qualified veteran charities recommended by you, our readers and subscribers. Please let us know what you think by emailing news@veteranvoiceweekly.com or mailing your comments to us at 1919 S.W. South Macedo Blvd., Port St. Lucie, FL 34984.

‘The Invisible War’ is returning to The Inner Truth Project FOR VETERAN VOICE

The Invisible War, a film exposing sexual violence in the military, will be shown at the Inner Truth Project Center , 2190 Reserve Park Trace, No. 13, Port St. Lucie, on Saturday, Nov. 9, 6 p.m. The cost is $12 per person, but U.S. veterans are free. The movie will be followed by a panel discussion. Light refreshments will be served. The Invisible War is a groundbreaking investigation about one of America’s most shameful and best kept secrets: the epidemic of rape within the U.S. military. The film paints a startling picture of the extent of the problem — today, a female soldier in combat zones is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. The Department of Defense estimates there were a staggering 19,300 service members sexually assaulted in 2010 alone. Focusing on the powerfully emotional stories of rape victims, The Invisible War is a moving indictment of the systemic cover-up of military sex crimes, chronicling the women’s struggles to rebuild their lives and fight for justice. It also features hard-hitting interviews with high-ranking military officials and members of Congress that reveal the perfect storm of conditions that exist for rape in the military, its long-hidden history, and what can be done to bring about much needed

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Lucia D’Ancona, Patrick Dyer and Donna Carlsen spoke to the audience of ‘The Invisible War’ about incidents that have happened and ways to make positive changes following a screening of the film at ‘The Inner Truth Project’ in St. Lucie West in July. The Inner Truth Project is once again hosting a showing of the film over Veterans Day Weekend. change. fines “catastrophic disability” as having an injury or disease that requires personal or mechanical assistance to leave home, such as using a wheelchair. Highwood said he sought a job for a long time before landing one. “It took about four years,” he said. “I’ve got a lot of management experience. We put in (resumes) everywhere, and nobody was interested.” During the National Veterans Wheelchair Games, July, the PVA opened its seventh Paving Access for Veterans Employment — Operation PAVE — regional office. It’s in Tampa, where the games were. Sherman Gillums Jr., associate executive director of veterans benefits, said rehabilitation for those with catastrophic injuries or diseases has routine deficiencies that contribute to high unemployment among people with disabilities. “When you go through a course of rehabilitation, the end goal is not employment,” he said. “It is about going home.” He added, “Paralyzed Veterans of America looks at employment as a goal for all veterans with disabilities.” Highwood was diagnosed with transverse myelitis in 2000. Those with the spinal-cord disease often must use wheelchairs,

but not always. It’s possible his time in the 1970s as a scout sniper with the 101st Airborne contributed to the extent of the condition. “I’ve got several herniated disks,” Highwood said. According to VA figures, about 16 percent of people with spinal-cord injuries and diseases are veterans. Veterans make up about 7 percent of the population. Because of that unusually high rate of spinal-cord problems among veterans, some spinal-cord diseases such as multiple sclerosis are presumptive service-related conditions. That is if a veteran shows symptoms of MS while in or within a certain period of time after discharging from the military, the VA presumes it’s due to service. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS, is always presumed to be a service-connected condition for any veteran with 90 days or more in the military. Highwood was managing a plumbing company when transverse myelitis struck him. His employer was accommodating, so Highwood continued working for a couple years after the diagnosis. But Highwood started losing his ability to hear telephone conversations — a necessity for that job. “I dropped out, because of the hearing,” he said. What Highwood hoped to find was management work that didn’t

“We reach out to employers who express an interest in hiring veterans with disabilities, but have no idea how to get started.” Sherman Gillums Jr. associate executive director of veterans benefits Operation PAVE require much telephone time. He got help with the job hunting from the Florida Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. He was startled by employers’ responses, or lack of them. “I was a manager at Sam’s Club,” he said. “I ran a large plumbing company.” Gillums, who is a wheelchair user due to a spinal-cord injury, said the PVA has heard many similar stories from veterans with disabilities. The organization was one of the leading proponents for the Americans with Disabilities Act, which requires employers to consider applicants with disabilities if those disabilities don’t affect their abilities to do core functions of jobs they apply for. Gillums said many companies are eager to comply with the law, and to support veterans with disabilities, but often don’t know how to go about it. “We reach out to employers who express an interest in hiring veterans with disabilities, but have no idea how to get started,” he said. Gillums said about 600 employers have joined the Operation PAVE network. Some are small

employers with a few positions. Others are multinational companies. He said Operation PAVE goes beyond helping wheelchair-using veterans. “We serve any veteran with a severe obstacle to employment,” he said. Severe obstacles include serious post-traumatic stress disorder, felony convictions, and disabilities such as hearing or vision loss, Gillums said. Additionally, he said Operation PAVE helps caregivers to veterans with catastrophic disabilities find employment. Highwood started working at Goodwill in January. He helped open the Palm City store. He said it’s important for veterans and others with disabilities to seek and have the chance for employment. “You can sit and dwell on what you used to be able to do, or focus on what you can still do,” he said. Employers and job seekers who want to find out more about Operation PAVE can visit operationpave.org, or call Shelly Edwards, employment network coordinator, at (570) 789-7283.

STUART— Jeanette Mazzella, director of the Barn Theatre’s production of the romantic comedy, “Pin Curls,” is a trouper. She is directing the play, written by local playwright Gale Baker, from Nov. 8-24. It is her first venture since finishing chemotherapy and radiation for a recurrence of breast cancer. Her hair is back, her health is good and she’s ready to roll. During the past year, she had a lot of time to think. “It was a year of staying home and soul-searching and praying,” she said. “I thought about a lot of things. You can’t put off all the things you want to do. I was approached to do this and I thought, ‘Why not?’ I’ve been in enough shows and I know how a director works.

PLAY from page 8 Mazzella has appeared in some 30 shows since she and husband Chris, a retired FBI agent, moved to Stuart. She is friends with local playwright Gale Baker and Baker brought the play to her. It had previously been produced in California with a professional cast, but this marks its Florida premiere. “It’s perfect for me, Mazzella said. “It’s set in 1944-1950 and I could relate to my mother during that time. It’s set in a Southern beauty shop and is the story of a local beautician who goes off to war as an Army nurse and what happens when she returns. She’s going because her guy was gouge, but he doesn’t make the draft and she’s going anyway and leaving him behind.” Mazzella is at the helm, but she does have help. Her husband Chris is the producer.

“He’s working his little buns off,” she said. “Nov. 7 is Friends and Family Night, the last dress rehearsal. We’ve dedicated it to veterans’ organizations, fire and rescue and other first responders. He’s invited four representatives from each of the organizations. We’re calling it ‘Helping Our Community Night.’” Chris Mazzella is also a singer and he will be off stage as the radio announcer during the show. Jeanette Mazzella noted that many of the actors are new to the Barn. “When I saw them, I thought, ‘I don’t know any of these folks,’’’ she said. ‘Each fits the character perfectly. I’m very proud of my cast. I love these people. They’re bringing this show to life.” The cast includes Amanda Lynn Photenhauer as beauty operator Betty Lou; Victoria Hadel, a Palm City resident, as Jolene; Liz

The stage manager is Kathleen Weaver. In keeping with the patriotic theme of the play, the director plans to have posters from the era around the theater. The ushers will wear red, white and blue sashes. Glenn Miller tunes play in the background and the cast even does a sort of take on “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree.” “This show is a challenge,’ Mazzella said. “I am delighted because of the era. I think the audience is really going to love it. The play

Navy SEAL Museum Muster CrowdThe National Navy SEAL Museum will host its annual Muster on Veterans Day weekend Nov. 8, 9 and 10. Three days of dramatic, moving, and just plain fun activities are planned for Museum members, veterans, families and the general public. The event has been held annually since 1985 and draws an increasingly larger crowd every year. The 2012 event attracted over 12,000 people from all over the country. With the program planning now under way, we could well exceed that number.

A team of Navy SEALs gave a demonstration simulating a capture starting with being dropped into the hot zone by helicopter and securing the area and capturing a hostage.
