The Blue Angels are coming to town. “Their schedule starts in January,” Marty Zickert, president of the Veterans Council of Indian River County, said. “We’re on the list and unless something major comes up, they’ll be here.” Here being the second revived Vero Beach Air Show, May 10 and 11 next year. The first revived Vero airshow was in early October. The veterans council is one of the co-organizers of the airshow that had laid dormant for almost 20 years. Mass communications specialist first class Terrence Siren verified that the Blue Angels are poised to perform over Vero Beach in May. “We do intend to have a 2014 season,” he said. “We have published what our 2014 season will be. It’s on our web site.” The Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron had to cancel its ground-rattling shows for the 2013 season, as did the Air Force’s Thunderbirds. That left only the Royal Canadian Air Force’s Snowbirds lending any military flight might at a handful of their American shows. None were in Florida. The federal budget sequestration grounded the crack demonstration flight teams in April. Both of the American military teams are poised to fly the upcoming airshow season, but with reduced schedules, according to Pentagon press releases. Some, however, are waiting until after

Veteran Voice is a weekly publication designed to provide information to and about veterans to veterans and to the broader community. Veterans are an integral part of their Florida communities, which currently have individual organizations of their own, such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Vietnam Veterans of America and many other groups with a narrow focus, but no convenient way to connect to a wider population of veterans and to the community in general within a limited geographic area, their community. The mission of Veteran Voice is to publish a weekly source of information that will provide, in one place, a listing of resources available to veterans, articles about changes in policies or organizations affecting veterans and events of interest to veterans as well as articles about veterans of interest to the general public. Veteran Voice LLC is organized as a partnership of experienced newspaper executives with an interest in veterans and in the communities of Florida veterans and friends. Veteran Voice is a start-up intended to address a perceived lack of information readily available to veterans on programs and policies affecting them and objective reporting of veteran affairs to the public. To our knowledge, and based on comments from leaders of local veterans organizations, there was no media or website currently meeting this need until the launch of Veteran Voice. We hope you agree, and will support this publication with your subscription. Without subscriptions there will be a limited number of people we can help, without which this mission will not be realized. As part of our commitment to supporting local veteran communities, we will donate 10 percent of our profits each quarter to qualified veteran charities recommended by you, our readers and subscribers. Please let us know what you think by emailing news@veteranvoiceweekly.com or mailing your comments to us at 1919 S.W. South Macedo Blvd., Port St. Lucie, FL 34984.

Buffalo Soldiers MC keep legacy alive For Veteran voice

A rich heritage remembered on the roads. The South Florida chapter of the National Association of Buffalo Soldiers & Troopers Motorcycle Clubs does a lot of things. But central to it all is remembering and honoring those who served in the 9th and 10th cavalries, along with the 24th and 25th infantries. The legendary Buffalo Soldiers. “I was a co-founder of the national Buffalo Soldiers in 1998,” Robert “Shaft” Hinton, said. “I was there from Day 1.” The St. Lucie County Army veteran is president of the South Florida chapter, which has about 25 members from Fort Pierce southward to West Palm Beach. “We are about the biggest black motorcycle club (in America),” Hinton said. Hinton said that while it’s most likely that the majority of members are black, the club is open to all who meet its criteria. Mackey “Magic” Ohara, who handles media inquiries for the chapter, said
members must own motorcycles with engines at least 750 ccs, complete 2,500 road miles, stay overnight in another state at least once, and go through a yearlong probation. “Once you do that, we take you to the members,” Ohara said. “If you do that and they like you, they’ll vote you in as a member.” It doesn’t accept members with felony convictions. Hinton said the motorcycle club participates in a number of fundraisers and service projects. For example, he said the club has done rides and events to raise awareness of World AIDS Day, funds for the Sickle Cell Foundation, food for Treasure Coast Food Bank and toys for Toys for Tots, among other things. Additionally, he said members speak with students about the history of the Buffalo Soldiers and the merits of patriotism. “We’re trying to get black kids to understand that we did contribute to this nation,” Hinton said. About 10 percent of Union soldiers during the Civil War were

The Thunderbirds and Blue Angels are the airshow rock stars. Without them, tickets just don’t usually sell nearly as well. Airshow organizer Bryan Lilley, B. Lilley Productions, said lots of organizers shut down shows rather than go the 2013 season without the elite flight teams to draw ticket buyers. For example, the Cocoa Beach Air & Space Show was cancelled when it became increasingly clear Thunderbirds weren’t going to get back to the airshow circuit this year. The Thunderbirds was the headlining act for the Cocoa Beach show. It turned out that the team’s last appearance of the season was the Warbird Museum’s Titusville show. The Thunderbirds were scheduled for four appearances in Florida. It only got to two. The team did a flyover at the Daytona 500, in addition to its Titusville show. The team was also scheduled to appear in Fort Lauderdale in April and at the Cocoa Beach show in October. Boswell said airshow organizers generally have to
request the Thunderbirds, Blue Angels and Snowbirds about two years in advance. He said the museum, like other large airshow organizers, just always asks for all three. He said it’ll likely be a few years before Titusville gets the Blue Angels, or Thunderbirds again. The teams try to spread around to give the greatest number of people a chance to see them. “There’s a block (on the application), ‘When is the last time you had a major air team?’” Boswell said. “We’ll never get the Canadians. They’re still buried in snow when we have our airshow.” The Pentagon estimates that various public functions of the military, such as bands and the flight teams, affected about 2,800 events in 2013. To find out more about the Blue Angels, visit blueangels.navy.mil. The Thunderbirds are at afthunderbirds. com. Information about the Vero Beach Air Show is at veroairshow.com. The next TICO Warbird AirShow will be March 14, 15 and 16. More about it is on the web at nbbd.com/festivals/warbird.

WASHINGTON — The Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Housing and Urban Development today announced that a new national report shows a 24 percent reduction in homelessness among veterans since 2010. The report also showed an 8 percent reduction between January 2012 and January 2013. The decline keeps the Obama administration on track to meet the goal of ending veterans’ homelessness in 2015. We are on the right track in the fight to end homelessness among veterans. While this trend is encouraging news, we know that there is more work to do,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “As President Obama said, we’re not going to rest until every veteran who has fought for America has a home in America. The results in the latest report are a credit to the effort given by our dedicated staff, and our federal, state, and community partners who are committed to ending veterans’
homelessness.” We’re making real and significant progress to reduce homelessness in this country and now is not the time to retreat from doing what we know works,” said U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan. “If we’re going to end homelessness as we know it, we need a continued bipartisan commitment from Congress to break the cycle trapping our most vulnerable citizens, especially our veterans, between living in a shelter or a life on the streets. I understand these are tough budget times but these are proven strategies that are making a real difference. We simply can’t balance our budget on the backs of those living on the margins.” The “2013 Point-in-Time Estimates of Homelessness,” prepared by HUD, estimates there were 57,849 homeless veterans on a single night in January in the United States, an 8 percent decline since 2012 and a 24 percent decline since 2010. The VA has made ending veterans’ homelessness by the end of

HOMELESS from page 6 2015 a top priority, undertaking an unprecedented campaign to dramatically increase awareness of VA services for homeless veterans and veterans at risk of becoming homeless. While the number of homeless people in the United States dropped by 4 percent since 2012, according to the 2013 report, veterans’ homelessness has shown a more robust decline. During a period of prolonged economic recovery, the Obama Administration has been able to reduce the number of homeless veterans by 24 percent, breaking previous patterns of increased homelessness during difficult economies. Earlier this year, HUD and VA also announced the award of nearly $70 million of HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing grants to further assist in addressing the issue of veterans’ homelessness. The program combines rental assistance from HUD with case management and clinical services provided by VA. Since 2008, a total of 58,140 vouchers have been awarded and 43,371 formerly homeless Veterans are
currently in homes of their own because of the joint HUD-VA program. One of the tools VA uses in its systematic approach to prevent and end veterans’ homelessness is the Supportive Services for Veteran Families grant program. In July, VA announced the award of nearly $300 million in grants to 319 community agencies to help approximately 120,000 homeless and at-risk veterans and their families. More recently, VA has announced $8.8 million in grants for 164 projects to acquire vans for homeless providers and to rehabilitate housing, plus $4.9 million in grants for 25 community-based projects to enhance services for veterans. The grants promote housing stability among homeless and at-risk veterans and their families. The grants can have an immediate impact, helping lift veterans out of homelessness or providing aid in emergencies that put veterans and their families at risk of homelessness. More information about VA’s homeless programs is available at www.va.gov/homeless. Details about the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program are online at www.va.gov/homeless/ ssvf.asp.

More than one in four, or 27.4 percent, of children in Indian River, Martin, St. Lucie and Okeechobee counties are going hungry, according to the Child Food Insecurity 2012 study. Food insecure is defined as people who don’t always know where they will find their next meal.

black. Most served in the United States Colored Troops units. They hadn’t gotten the nickname “buffalo soldiers” yet. Congress created peacetime black units in 1866, almost a century before racial integration in the military. They would garner the name “Buffalo Soldiers.” “A lot of Buffalo Soldiers had been slaves,” Hinton said. “A lot of them were sent out West, because whites didn’t want to deal with them.” Most military historians seem to agree Cheyenne fighters gave the black soldiers the moniker. The stories about how that happen vary. Most hold that the Cheyenne were struck by skin color and hair of the black soldiers, considering both similar to buffalos. Some say the name came about because of an early encounter the Cheyenne had with Private John Randall. The lone soldier barricaded himself in a washout during an attack and fended off numerous combatants. He was injured several times, but kept fighting until help arrived. The Cheyenne were astonished by his fighting tenacity, an attribute they esteemed in buffalos. Hinton said there’s evidence the Cheyenne and other tribes

We wish to blanket the whole city with car window stickers and lawn signs to state “Keep Christ in Christmas.” We wish to share this program with anyone in the endeavor to have cooperation amongst all Christians no matter what denomination they may be. It is our hope to develop a consortium of all denominations to work together to have Merry Christmas restored in the corporate business world. By boycotting any business which elects to use “Happy Holidays” in place of “Merry Christmas,” we can effectively restore the true meaning of
the holiday season. It must be remembered that Christmas is one of American’s national holidays and should not be compromised. God bless you and America.
