There’ll also be an enemy-apprehension demonstration. Among other notables that’ll be
on hand will be Adm. William McRaven, Congressman Patrick Murphy, former presidential candidate Ross Perot. There’ll also be two Medal of Honor recipients, lieutenants Michael Thorton and Thomas Norris. At 12:45 p.m., the museum will dedicate its Medal of Honor statue. At 1 p.m., Uproot Hootenanny will take the stage with its mix
of Irish, bluegrass, folk, country and rock music. Those who aren’t museum members can catch the Killbillies, followed by the American Rogues for $3. That’ll start at 5 p.m. Museum members get into that show free. Folks are welcome to bring their own blankets for those shows.

Who knew? SEALs are party animals. “Things will be blown up, helicopters flying around and SEALs running around,” said Rick Kaiser, executive director of the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum, Fort Pierce. The museum will have its 28th annual Muster & Music Festival from Friday, Nov. 8 to Sunday, Nov. 10. Events open to the public will be on Saturday and Sunday. This year marks the 70th since the Naval Combat Demolition Units started training at the beach by the museum. “This year we’ll have 30 guys that trained for Normandy,” Kaiser said. He added, “They became Underwater Demolition Teams, UDT, which are the forefathers of the SEALs.” Kaiser said the muster and music festival is a chance for folks to meet honest-to-God UDT frogmen and SEALs from all eras. He said they’ll come from all over to join in the fun. “Oh, gee, hundreds,” Kaiser said. “I can’t give you a definite number, but there’ll be a couple hundred.” Best of all, most events are free to the public. “The big day is Saturday the 9th,” Kaiser said. “We start things off with a 5k run and walk on the beaches where these guys trained back in World War II.” That’ll be at 7 a.m. A few hours later, the boom boom begins.

Veteran Voice is a weekly publication designed to provide information to and about veterans to veterans and to the broader community. Veterans are an integral part of their Florida communities, which currently have individual organizations of their own, such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Vietnam Veterans of America and many other groups with a narrow focus, but no convenient way to connect to a wider population of veterans and to the community in general within a limited geographic area, their community. The mission of Veteran Voice is to publish a weekly source of information that will provide, in one place, a listing of resources available to veterans, articles about changes in policies or organizations affecting veterans and events of interest to veterans as well as articles about veterans of interest to the general public. Veteran Voice LLC is organized as a partnership of experienced newspaper executives with an interest in veterans and in the communities of Florida veterans and friends. Veteran Voice is a start-up intended to address a perceived lack of information readily available to veterans on programs and policies affecting them and objective reporting of veteran affairs to the public. To our knowledge, and based on comments from leaders of local veterans organizations, there was no media or website currently meeting this need until the launch of Veteran Voice. We hope you agree, and will support this publication with your subscription. Without subscriptions there will be a limited number of people we can help, without which this mission will not be realized. As part of our commitment to supporting local veteran communities, we will donate 10 percent of our profits each quarter to qualified veteran charities recommended by you, our readers and subscribers. Please let us know what you think by emailing news@veteranvoiceweekly.com or mailing your comments to us at 1919 S.W. South Macedo Blvd., Port St. Lucie, FL 34984.

Local man in inaugural class of Florida Veterans Hall of Fame For Veteran voice
patrick.mccallister@yahoo.com
Brevard County’s John Cleland will be in good company on Nov. 12. He’s among six getting inducted into the inaugural class of the Florida Veterans Hall of Fame. “He’s a giver,” said Courtney Yelle, president of the Cape Canaveral Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America. “He’s constantly out trying to help others to understand the work and rigors of military life from World War II to Vietnam and how it affects all of us (veterans).” Governor Rick Scott will induct the six on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the Cabinet Room of the State Capitol. In addition to Cleland, inductees are Sam Gibbons, Tampa, John Haynes, Monticello, Robert Milligan, Tallahassee, Jeanne Rubin, Sunrise, and Robert Silah, Tampa. Cleland served in the Army from 1943 to 1980. He was a major general when he retired. The Veterans Hall of Fame Council had its first meeting in December. Dr. James Harrell, who lives
in Stuart, is among the council’s seven members. His wife, Gayle Harrell, is the Florida representative who introduced the legislation that created the hall. She represents parts of Martin and St. Lucie counties. Harrell was appointed to the council by Jeff Atwater, chief financial officer of the state. “This is for people who were in the military who did something outstanding for the state of Florida,” Harrell said in a previous interview. “It’s a way to honor people (for civilian accomplishments). There are an awful lot of people who come back and are very successful in medicine, or business, politics.” Cleland said he moved to Melbourne back in 1982, and joined the Retired Officers Association — which was later renamed Military Officers Association of America. He also started work in consulting. “I took a team to the International Court of Arbitration for a British firm that was trying to get money out of the Ayatollah Khomeini,” Cleland said. “He refused to pay the British firm for tanks they ordered and many they had
received.” He said winning a court victory against Iran was gratifying. “We got them 50 percent of their losses, which we figured was pretty good,” Cleland said. Among other contributions to Brevard County, Cleland served on the Cape Canaveral Hospital’s and Brevard Cultural Alliance’s boards of directors. He was a little startled about getting invited to the latter. “If anyone had ever told me I’d be on an arts council, I’d laughed,” Cleland said. “They were good people.” The 88-year-old is active helping the Florida Institute of Technology’s Army ROTC program. He helped establish its Distinguished Lecturer Series. “I have close contact with the professor of military science,” Cleland said. “I give talks to the cadets. I’m available for whatever they need me to do. That’s very gratifying. These are outstanding young Americans for the future of our country.” Cleland served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Has it been a year already? How about that. This week’s editions of Your Voice News & Views and Veteran Voice are our one-year anniversary editions. There really is some truth to the saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun ... and working your tail off.” Fifty-two weeks ago we published the first editions of our new direct-mailed, hyper-local community newspapers. After several months of planning, prepping, packaging, purchasing and persuading it all came together. A few longtime associates, (and dear friends) and a few new faces came together to try to accomplish what a lot of people were telling us was a waste of time

and money. Not too many people that were “in the know” thought we could pull it off, and we knew of a few other individuals out there that sure didn’t want us to, either. Never one to be dissuaded by naysayers, we knew that with the right team we could put together the right product that could be successful. In spite of all the talk about newspapers being a dying
media and the death of print, we knew that if we brought it down to the hyper-local level we could inform and entertain the readers. So far, it would appear, so good. In my 30 years of the newspaper business we have been blessed to work and live in some of the most incredible places in the country. Southern California, Austin, Texas, Breckenridge, Colo., Central California, Pittsburg Pennsylvania and Florida, just to name a few. (We never want to leave Florida.) We have been a part of all kinds of newspapers from dailies, weeklies, bi-weeklies, start-ups, rebuilds, just about everything. Few, if any, have given us the

Not once, not twice, but thrice. Port St. Lucie veteran John Magine took top spot in the 2013 Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Day Poster Contest. “Third year,” he said. “First year was 2008, and then 2011, and this year.” His creation is displayed in federal buildings and will be the Arlington National Cemetery’s Veterans Day Memorial Observance program. “I submit every year,” Magine said. “It’s probably one of the hardest things to do, because there are some unwritten rules you have to follow. They don’t publish the rules. You sort of have to learn them.” For example, experience taught Magine … “You have to have all services covered,” he said. “It can’t be all men. You have to have men and women represented. You can’t put words over the American flag.” Magine added, “It’s fairly difficult to do, because you have to indicate the spirit of veterans defending liberty and freedom, sacrifice, and all of the things important to veterans, yet be generic. I enjoy it, because it is difficult.” The Army veteran was in the 3rd

We want to produce a newspaper that the readers find helpful, informative and pertinent. We want to produce a newspaper that will introduce our advertising partners to their customers and drive these local business owners to success. We want to continue to support the local nonprofits and charities so that they can continue to do the things they need to do that makes the Treasure Coast a great place to live. Of all the communities we have lived in over the years, I can honestly say that the Treasure Coast is one of the most giving we have ever experienced. We love being a part of these communities. We love that you have taken our newspaper into your homes and into your lives. We will do more. We will be the publication you want and need us to be. We will continue to be your voice. war is how he met his wife, Clara, back in ’51. “I got wounded and they brought me into the receiving camp,” he said. “I’ve never been so cold in my life.” But amid the chaotic scene, he spotted here. “There was this very attractive nurse,” Cleland said “It’s hard to be attractive in men’s fatigues.” After getting treated at the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, Cleland headed stateside for a bit. “Eight months later I’m lying in bed at Walter Reed (Army Medical Center), and in comes the new ward nurse, looking very attractive.” Yep, it was Clara. Cleland said all
veterans have much to offer their communities. He urges them to remember what they were taught in the military: never stop learning. “I would counsel them, first get yourself established,” Cleland said. “That’s very important. Also, I would say join the American Legion or (Veterans of Foreign Wars). Those two organizations are strong veterans advocates.” Every year up to 20 veterans will be inaugurated into the hall. The public can financially contribute to the Florida Veterans Hall of Fame through the Florida Veterans Foundation, a not-for-profit organization operating through the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs. Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Christine Epps, executive director of the Executive Roundtable of St. Lucie County, didn’t balk at the opportunity to spin like a top with aerobatic pilot Jeff Boerboon and the John Klatt Airshows Air National Guard team and share her experience in a column of their talents.
AIR SHOW from page 10 rived. The sky was crystal clear, the sun was shining bright; it would be a beautiful day to fly. Time spun into a tight circle as I was strapped tightly into the parachute and then packed away in the high performance Air National Guard Extra 300L airplane. As the canopy closed, the reality set in “this is going to be the time of your life.” The buzz of the propeller began and we were off. Soon I was airborne like a feather in the wind with Jeff Boerboon, a world champion stunt pilot, and Lt. Colonel John Klatt as his wingman, two world class air show performers. We were in perfect formation so close that had I been a wing walker, I could have jumped to the other plane. Fear crept in as I asked the question, “Do you always fly this close? Isn’t that dangerous?” Jeff Boerboon quickly responded in a matter-of-fact manner, “Yes, and there is no room for error. Are you ready for some fun?” John announced, “Clear to roll” and we began climbing vertical and then backward and then falling toward the ground only to be thrown back again vertical and then backward for what I believe two more times. In these moments, you feel your body
switch from feeling weightless to being pressed to the seat and immobilized by the crushing force of gravity. I was looking out the window to witness in disbelief the next stunt as John performs it first before we launch into our own – the “hammerhead”- a maneuver where the airplane climbs vertically until it runs out of airspeed, Jeff then kicks the left rudder, pulls the throttle back to idle, which sounds like the engine has been switched to off and the nose pivots down as we plummet toward the earth. We leveled off, and then, to my amazement, I was told to take the controls stick and pull back. This sealed the thought of this pilot truly being a brave soul. I was then instructed to move it to the left hard until we cleared 360 degrees. It was now time to go in. My mind and body were in shock of a dream come true, exhausted from the G’s and exhilarated by the experience of a lifetime.
