to see the Thunderbirds this year. If the demonstration team heads back to the air-show circuit this year, locals could get a second shot at seeing them in action. That’ll be at the Cocoa Beach Air & Space Show, Oct. 19 to 20.

Bryan Lilley, promoter of the Cocoa Beach show, said he’s confident the Thunderbirds will fly twice in Brevard County this year. “Our show is not until October, which is a long way off and after a new fiscal year,” Lilley said. “We believe the team will be back in action by Oct. 1.” The federal fiscal year starts on Oct. 1. The Cocoa Beach show is one of the last scheduled appearances for the air team in 2013. It’ll be at Lori Wilson Park, 1500 N. Atlantic Ave. The next big event for the avi-

ation museum is the first of its annual two open houses. That’ll be on Memorial Day weekend, May 25 to 27. There’s no charge for admission those days. “We have an antique car show,” Yon said. “We have veteran pilots standing by aircraft to tell folks about their experience in them.” In addition to food wagons, musical guests and … “Just about anything we can throw together to add to the experience for people we do,” Yon said.

The roar of the Thunderbirds is gone, but the action continues. The 36th annual Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum & TICO AirShow, March 22 to 24, was a hit. “It was a record-breaking crowd,” Terry Yon, public relations officer at the museum, said. “The Thunderbirds really brought the crowds in.” Yon said the first appearance of the Thunderbirds at the annual show pushed attendance up about 30 to 50 percent. “We normally do 30,000 to 35,000,” Yon said. “We think we easily had 45,000 this year.” The crack pilots of the U.S. Air Force’s Thunderbirds are highly trained and motivated combat aviators who can fly through any melee — except bickering politicians. On March 1, Maj. Darrick Lee, Thunderbirds’ public affairs officer, announced that the air demonstration team will be grounded after April 1 due to the federal budget sequestration. The Valiant Air Command’s show might have been fans’ last chance

The mission of Veteran Voice is to publish a weekly source of information that will provide, in one place, a listing of resources available to veterans, articles about changes in policies or organizations affecting veterans and events of interest to veterans as well as articles about veterans of interest to the general public. Veteran Voice LLC is organized as a partnership of experienced newspaper executives with an interest in veterans and in the communities of Florida veterans and friends. VV is a start-up intended to address a perceived lack of information readily available to veterans on programs and policies affecting them and objective reporting of veteran affairs to the public. To our knowledge, and based on comments from leaders of local veterans organizations, there was no media or website currently meeting this need until the launch of VeteranVoice. The museum sports 35 to 40 aircraft and other displays on normal days. “We have exhibits that track military aviation from World War I to the present time,” Yon said. The next open house is on the

weekend before Veterans’ Day, Nov. 9-10. The museum is at 6600 Tico Road, Titusville. Admission is $18, seniors and veterans get a $3 discount. Children ages 5 to 12 are $5. Those under 5 are free. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.

Capt. Jason Curtis is the opposing solo pilot for the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, flying the No. 6 jet. During high school, he ran cross country, was a competitive snowboarder, and played drums in a rock ’n’ roll band. Captain Curtis entered the Air Force in 2004 as a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. Before joining the team, Captain Curtis was an F-16 instructor pilot and flight commander for the 308th Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base, Ariz. He has logged more than 1,200 flight hours as an Air Force pilot, with more than 280 hours of combat experience in the F-16C.

whole lot of trust and a whole lot of teamwork. Q. I see a lot of people on this team. They aren’t all pilots. What are the functions of the rest of the team like? A. The biggest thing it takes to be on the Thunderbird team is a good heart and a good attitude and a willingness to work hard and a desire to serve. We have over 100 career fields on the team, whether it be a pilot or an engine specialist or one of many other parts of the team. Q. Being No. 6, I am guessing plane No. 5 and No. 7 are the guys you have to watch out for most? A. Five is the person I mostly fly off of. He is called the lead solo and I am the opposing solo. The first four aircraft, they comprise the ‘Thunderbird Diamond.’ There are basically three parts to the show. The first part (is) where there is the diamond and the solos separate and we will do our opposing passes while the diamond does their maneuvers, and then towards the end of the show, the solos will rejoin with the diamond to form what we call the delta, which is all six aircraft in formation.

Airport greeters needed for returning Honor Flight vets By Patrick McCallister For Veteran Voice

“We were talking to the airport employees the other day, and I think we scared them with our grand plans. I’m shooting for hundreds. Thousands may get us kicked out.”

It’s one of the most well-known numbers among veterans: 1,000 a day. That’s the commonly-cited number of World War II veterans who die daily. It’s also the urgency behind the Honor Flight Southeast Florida. “We have done 11 flights,” Todd Tucker, vice chair, said. “We’ve taken 852 veterans to date. In May, we’ll exceed our 1,000 veterans. We have a waiting list of over 300.” The Honor Flight Network is a national program that takes World War II veterans to see the memorial dedicated to them on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. It was erected in 2004. The honor flights began, almost by accident, a year later. Honor Flight Southeast Florida, called a “hub,” started in 2009. Its next flight is on April 27. Vanessa Smolen, a local Honor Flight volunteer, is heading up an effort, Project Homecoming, to get more folks out to greet the veterans when they return from Washington to the Palm Beach International Airport at 7:50 p.m. “We were talking to the airport employees the other day, and I think we scared them with our grand plans,” she said. “I’m shooting for hundreds. Smolen was instrumental in getting four January showings of the documentary at Carmike Cinema 14, 1900 N.W. Courtyard Circle, Port

She said the documentary showed thousands of Wisconsin locals turning out to greet returning veterans. “It was so huge, we thought it was Photoshopped or something, or they put a call out and said, ‘We’re making this movie,’” she said. “But, no. That’s how many always turn out for the veterans in Wisconsin. It was overwhelming to see the amount of people who came out.” According to a 2008 Associated Press estimate, the once 16.1 million World War II veterans are dying at a rate of more than 1,100 a day. Only about 2 million are living, according to a recent report by the Department of Veterans Affairs. No one has an exact daily death count, but the VA, AP and others have developed the same estimate by using long-form census data, VA data, and standard mortality tables. The VA estimates that America will have almost no World War II veterans by 2020. If the oldest lives as long as Frank Buckles — the last surviving American World War I serviceman — America will lose its last World War II

veteran in 24 years, 2037. Buckles died in 2011 at age 110. The youngest World War II veterans were born in 1927 and are 86. The Honor Flights are free to the veterans. They’re accompanied by guardians, volunteers who pay to their own way to care for the veterans during their visits to Washington. In addition to Honor Flight Southeast Florida, there’s another local hub, Space Coast Honor Flight. That volunteer group also has a flight scheduled for April 27. That flight is from the Orlando International Airport. The Space Coast hub has flights planned for June 1 and 22, Aug. 24, Sept. 28 and Oct. 19. The Southeast Florida hub has another flight planned for May 25, and is scheduling two more for fall. Honor Flight Southeast Florida is on the web at honorflightsefl.org. Seniors outraged over arcade controversy By Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer nrodriguez@yourvoiceweekly.com PORT ST. LUCIE — Cascades resident, James Brown, 69, said if the Senate approves a measure to kill arcades throughout the state, he and thousands of other senior citizens will have no place to turn for affordable entertainment. “This is very important to seniors. It gives us something to do on the days when we have extra time,” said Brown, who’s been playing at local arcades in Port St. Lucie for the past seven years. “It’s a good way to have some free time. You’re not thinking about any problems and you just enjoy yourself.” Brown was one of more than 100 senior citizens who gathered outside of the Golden Nugget Arcade in Port St. Lucie to protest the Florida Legislature’s overwhelming support to ban arcades and Internet cafes. Hundreds of similar protests were held throughout

the state on March 24. On March 21, the Florida House voted 108-7 in favor of House Bill 155, which bans gambling establishments. The bill was sponsored by South Florida state Rep. Carlos Trujillo and is expected to go to the Senate and then Gov. Rick Scott before the session ends. The arcade’s owner, Joe Davis, a PGA Village resident, started in the local arcade business 10 years ago. He said seniors will suffer the most if the Senate supports the House’s bill. “The senior citizens are who they’re killing. They have a lot of fun,” Davis said. “We have birthday parties. Every holiday we feed them Thanksgiving turkey. It’s a part of their life.” Davis said his machines are drastically different from highstakes slot machines, which award cash. Golden Nugget and neighboring arcades offer gift cards to local stores and the

I have also been to Korea and Italy serving in the European command and then several assignments back here in the United States. Q. How long have you been with the team? A. I am actually one of the new guys. This is my first show with the Thunderbirds. I joined the team in November of 2011 and went through a three-month training with the team. Q. What was the training like for the ‘new guy?’ A. We trained, like I said, for three months with two times a day going through specific individual maneuvers, bringing it all together for the Thunderbird delta, which is all six aircraft in a very tightly choreographed show. Q. What is one of the ways that the Thunderbird team gives back to the community? A. We are part of the Fallen Warrior program. It brings to light someone from the local community we are flying in who has paid the ultimate sacrifice serving in our armed forces overseas. Our fallen warrior for the Tico Warbird Airshow is Army Specialist Brendan Salazar, 20, of Chuluota, FL. He died July 22, 2012, in Puli Alam, Afghanistan, of wounds caused by an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy. We want to honor him and his family with an amazing tribute during the show. Q. What does your mother think of all this? A. My mother is actually pretty excited. She is here today for the airshow. She flew in from Montana. My mom is absolutely thrilled about it. She has seen me fly before, but only to take off and land. She has never seen the maneuvers of the team in an airshow.

machines function similarly to skill-building computer games, he said. Davis added arcades are nothing like controversial Internet cafes. “We cater to senior citizens and we do not pay cash. We pay taxes,” Davis said. “Every prize that is won goes back into the community. It’s just one big circle. We’re not a gambling operation by any means.” Arcades around the state recently came under scrutiny after an investigation indicated the nonprofit Allied Veterans of the World is operating a $290 million illegal gambling business that barely benefited veterans, while executives collected the profits. Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll, who providing public relations consulting for Allied Veterans, resigned last week after she was questioned about her ties to the organization. Carroll doesn’t face any charges. Davis said arcade employees will take one of the biggest hits. Davis employs 17 full-time staffers. “Not to mention sub-contractors, cleaning companies and food companies,” Davis said. “We spend about $3,000 a week on food. Publix is going to suffer. I spend maybe $7,000 or $8,000 a week on Publix gift cards.” Cascades resident and Golden Nugget regular Carole Graver, 74, said arcade workers will be dev-

astated if the establishments are forced to close their doors. “The worst thing about it for me is how it affects the employees. What’s going to happen to them?” Graver said. “A lot of these people have been working here for years, and years, and years. They have no backup in this economy.” Mariam Offenhartz, 62, of the Cascades is perplexed by the Legislature’s vote. “Why would you shut down a business thats bringing in tax dollars, brings entertainment to your constituents, provides jobs and supports other establishments by providing gift cards that are spent within the community?” she said. “It would be bad for the community. I get a Publix card and I’m at my corner Publix, I’m at my corner Wal-Mart.” Sal Giasullo, 81, of Port St. Lucie, donned a shirt that read, “Rick Scott, Save the Arcades.” “Thousands of people in Florida will lose their jobs. The people who signed this bill, put yourselves in these people’s place,” Giasullo said. “I know a man named Charlie and he comes in here every night. He lost his wife a year ago. Joe (Davis) gives him free meals.” “Please Rick, don’t sign that bill, save these jobs for these people. Think twice or you won’t be elected if you rerun,” Giasullo pleaded as motorists traveling south on U.S. 1 honked in support.
