Prevent the spread of COVID-19 if you are sick Accessible version: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/if-you-are-sick/steps-when-sick.html

If you are sick with COVID-19 or think you might have COVID-19, follow the steps below to help protect other people in your home and community.

Stay home except to get medical care. • Stay home. Most people with COVID-19 have mild illness and are able to recover at home without medical care. Do not leave your home, except to get medical care. Do not visit public areas. • Take care of yourself. Get rest and stay hydrated. • Get medical care when needed. Call your doctor before you go to their office for care. But, if you have trouble breathing or other concerning symptoms, call 911 for immediate help. • Avoid public transportation, ride-sharing, or taxis.

Separate yourself from other people and pets in your home. • As much as possible, stay in a specific room and away from other people and pets in your home. Also, you should use a separate bathroom, if available. If you need to be around other people or animals in or outside of the home, wear a cloth face covering. ɞ See COVID-19 and Animals if you have questions about pets: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019ncov/faq.html#COVID19animals

Monitor your symptoms. • Common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever and cough. Trouble breathing is a more serious symptom that means you should get medical attention. • Follow care instructions from your healthcare provider and local health department. Your local health authorities will give instructions on checking your symptoms and reporting information.

If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately. Emergency warning signs include*: • Trouble breathing • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest • New confusion or not able to be woken • Bluish lips or face *This list is not all inclusive. Please consult your medical provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning to you.

Call 911 if you have a medical emergency. If you have a medical emergency and need to call 911, notify the operator that you have or think you might have, COVID-19. If possible, put on a facemask before medical help arrives.

Call ahead before visiting your doctor. • Call ahead. Many medical visits for routine care are being postponed or done by phone or telemedicine. • If you have a medical appointment that cannot be postponed, call your doctor’s office. This will help the office protect themselves and other patients.

If you are sick, wear a cloth covering over your nose and mouth. • You should wear a cloth face covering over your nose and mouth if you must be around other people or animals, including pets (even at home). • You don’t need to wear the cloth face covering if you are alone. If you can’t put on a cloth face covering (because of trouble breathing for example), cover your coughs and sneezes in some other way. Try to stay at least 6 feet away from other people. This will help protect the people around you. Note: During the COVID-19 pandemic, medical grade facemasks are reserved for healthcare workers and some first responders. You may need to make a cloth face covering using a scarf or bandana.

May sees slight rebound in veterans employment Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

The seasonally adjusted national nonfarm unemployment rate for veterans was 9.1 percent in May, down from 11.8 percent in April. This put veterans employment last month in similar terrain as it was in 2010. That year started with a 9.9 percent seasonally adjusted unemployment rate that didn’t drop until March. The last time veteran unemployment has been at 9.1 percent was in October, 2010. The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the monthly jobs report on June 5. The report noted that telephone-survey workers made widespread classification errors that likely lowered the reported national unemployment rate, which likely lowered the reported rate among veterans. However, the workers made similar errors the preceding two months, so it’s still relevant to compare April’s and May’s numbers to get a trendline. There’s no reason to suspect the BLS made the errors deliberately to obfuscate the extent to which SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 has affected the labor markets.

Coronavirus continues to afflict jobs market May was the second full month of measuring employment since the novel coronavirus crashed onto the national scene. For local context, the Florida Department of Health announced the first cases in the Sunshine State on March 2. Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency

in all 67 counties on March 9. He issued orders that shut down various businesses on April 1. The state’s Phase 1 reopening started on May 18. The Phase 2 on June 5. Veterans, all cohort`vs taken together, fared better than average in May with a not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 9 percent compared to a not seasonally adjusted rate of 13 for non-veterans. The veterans’ labor force participation rate held steady at 48.2 percent. The non-veterans’ labor force participation rate increased from 62.4 to 63.2. The seasonally adjusted overall unemployment rate for May was 13.3 percent.

Veterans cohorts employment numbers The way the bureau reports employment numbers there are several ways to look at different cohorts of veterans. For example, women veterans had a 7.8 percent, not seasonally adjusted, unemployment rate, in May compared to the veteran men having 9.1 percent. It appears that tracks opposite to non-veteran women. They had a 14.1 percent not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in May, whereas their male counterparts had 11.9. The youngest cohort of veterans, which the BLS designates as “Gulf War-era II,” had a not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 10.3 percent. Most know this group as “Post 9-11” and most are millennials. The men in this cohort were at 10.4 percent unemployment. The women 10.1 percent. The bureau’s Gulf War-era I veterans, generally Gen-Xers, had an April unem-

ployment rate at 4.8 percent. The men were at 6.7 percent; the women 5.2. The BLS classes together Vietnam-era to World War II-era veterans. Obviously there are almost no World War II veterans in the workplace, and not too many Korean War veterans. This grouping, for employment purposes, is almost all Vietnam-era veterans, baby boomers. The older veterans, according to BLS, had a 11.9 percent unemployment rate in May. The cohort the bureau identifies as “Veterans of other service periods,” includes disparate years and decades ranging from the 1950s to 1990s. About 70 percent of the men in this grouping are around 65 years old. About half of the women in the cohort are 45 to 65. This cohort had an 9.4 percent unemployment rate in April. In this group the men were higher than the women, 10.1 percent not seasonally adjusted unemployment compared to 4.3 percent.

How unemployment numbers work The national and state unemployment rates are calculated using a variety of methods. Among them are random telephone interviews with people in working ages. This was where the classification errors for the last couple months happened. The report reads: “In the household survey, individuals are classified as employed, unemployed, or not in the labor force based on their answers to a series of questions about

Heroes: Voices of History Introduction and Narration by Chris Coad Taylor JoHazel Publishing http://johazelpublishing.com. 978099764549, $16.99 www.amazon.com

This year marked 76 years since the Allied forces began the reclaiming of Europe that is known as D Day. Unfortunately, in the times we are in, the significance of the Normandy invasion has been cast aside, it would seem, as we saw virtually no coverage by the press, of ceremonies to honor the fallen soldiers. “Heroes: Voices of History” is a celebration of the many men and women who have served this country throughout the years but mostly concentrates on WWII. Like Studs Terkel’s “Working” there are oral dialogues Chris Coad Taylor conducted with veterans

and their families while she also delves into the world back then, comparing it to now in many different ways. ‘Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.” Winston Churchill in a speech to the House of Commons 1948. Churchill’ slightly changed the original statement made by George Santayna in 1905, But the implication is clear. By not honoring our military heroes living and deceased to preserve our freedoms is obvious evidence of the course we are on. “Heroes Voices of History” should be required or suggested reading in public schools and colleges throughout the nation to change that path.

‘LION OF LITTLE ROUND TOP’ Mild-mannered professor from Maine becomes one of Civil War’s heroes

Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER

mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com

He was known as a quiet man, a professor of rhetoric at Bowdoin College, Maine. He and his wife, Fanny, had five children, of whom two survived. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain longed to serve, but kept his teaching and family obligations. In all of his classes, however, he spent a good deal of time urging his students to do their duty and enlist, or become officers. This didn’t sit well with the dean and provosts, and they sent him on a sabbatical, supposedly to learn languages in Europe for two years. Instead, he sneaked off and gained a commission as a lieutenant colonel in the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Chamberlain gained fame in the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, but it was during the Siege of Petersburg on this day, June 18, 1864, that he sustained such bad injuries that he was thought to be fatally wounded.

Immortal bravery at Gettysburg On July 2, the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, the 20th Maine was assigned to the Union’s far-left flank on Little Round Top. Knowing the Union Army was still in the process of regrouping from the previous day, the 15th Alabama Infantry Regiment charged the hill time and time again. Chamberlain saw how dire the situation had become. He ordered a series of bayonet charges, while simultaneously flanking the 15th Alabama, like a hinge. He was ultimately successful in helping save the strategic location, earning him the Medal of Honor. He sustained two wounds, one when a shot hit his sword scabbard and bruised his thigh, and another when his right foot was hit by a spent bullet or piece of shrapnel.

Source: War Department/Wikimedia Commons This photograph of Gen. Joshua L. Chamberlain was taken by famed wartime photographer Mathew Brady during the Civil War.

Siege of Petersburg By April 1864, Chamberlain was promoted to brigade commander in the Army of the Potomac shortly before the Siege of Petersburg and given command of the 1st Brigade, First Division, V Corps. In a major action on June 18, during the Second Battle of Petersburg, Chamberlain was

shot through the right hip and groin, the bullet exiting his left hip. Despite the injury, Chamberlain took his sword and stuck it into the ground in order to keep himself upright, to prevent the growing urge for retreat. He stood upright for several minutes until he collapsed and lay unconscious from loss of blood. The wound

was considered mortal by the division’s surgeon, who predicted he would die. But he didn’t. He was back in command by November. Although many, including his wife, urged Chamberlain to resign, he was determined to serve through the end of the war.

National Guard Soldier eases tensions with protesters in Minnesota By Sean Kimmons

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE

As Master Sgt. Acie Matthews Jr. walked past a group of loud protesters next to Minnesota’s state capitol building Monday, one of its organizers targeted him with her loudspeaker. “These people aren’t here for us! They’re here to keep us oppressed,” Matthews recalled the protester saying to him and other National Guard members. Instead of ignoring her, Matthews, an equal employment opportunity advisor who had been checking on other troops in the area, decided to stop and listen. After the activist cracked a joke, telling her fellow protesters to not be scared since

Guard members cannot shoot well, Matthews saw it as an opening to have a more meaningful conversation.

‘We’re on the same team’ “Unknowingly, on her part, that was the icebreaker that we needed to step in to engage the community,” said Matthews, who has served 19 years in the Army. He laughed at the joke, clapped his hands and approached the crowd of about 200 protesters, with his uniform and combat helmet standing out among them. In an attempt to get on common ground, he asked if anyone could come up and recite a non-denominational prayer. A young man stepped

forward and said one. Afterward, Matthews embraced him and briefly spoke to him. “We’re on the same team,” he said he told the protester. “This is Minnesota’s Army. We’re not some outside force that just came in here. We’re here for the people of the great state of Minnesota.”

Civil unrest Just a week before, George Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American man, died after being arrested by police about 10 miles away in Minneapolis. Four police officers have since been charged for their involvement in his death. The incident sparked protests across the country, some of them even resulting in riots

where Matthews calls home. At least 2,500 Minnesota Guard members are now activated to assist local law enforcement and fire departments. Matthews currently works out of the joint operations center, where he’s been tracking activity in the state. “We’re ensuring that they have the security they need to go out and perform their jobs,” he said in an interview.

National Guard response The Minnesotan force is part of a massive Guard response to the civil unrest and COVID-19, which has about 75,000 troops activated nationwide. It is the largest

Make Independence Day at home Fort Pierce’s Dabble in Color is hosting a virtual art-instruction workshop on Friday, July 3. Students will learn how to paint “Freedom,” a painting featuring an American flag, eagle and palm trees. Participants never have to leave their homes to participate — all the needed art supplies will be sent to them and the instruction will be online. Veterans will get a 10 percent discount.

Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

Cities and others throughout the state, and probably nation, are cancelling Independence Day events. Of course, that’s due to the SARS-CoV-2/ COVID-19 medical emergency. But, it’s still a bummer. We all want to celebrate Independence Day — especially with this being the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. There’re still ways for folks to mark the day patriotically while maintaining social distance for medical safety. Veteran Voice ran into one. “I think we need art therapy now more than ever,” said Laura Lucas, co-owner of Dabble in Color.

“Freedom” Dabble in Color is an art-instruction business in Fort Pierce. It’s offering veterans a 10 percent discount for its upcoming art-creation workshop, “Freedom.” “I personally have a special place in my heart for veterans and love the idea (of giving them discounts),” Lucas said in an e-mail to Veteran Voice. The best part about this art-instruction and -creation workshop is it’s virtual. Folks only need to go online to register and make a bit of space to paint at their houses, then be at their computers on Friday, July 3, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The website to register is www.dabbleincolor.net. Visitors will see a calendar with event logos. Go to July and click on the American flag with palm trees and eagle. Yes, Florida is home to bald eagles, our national symbol, so palm trees and an eagle with the flag. That’s what participants will paint. Lucas said veterans will have a chance to put in the code “VETERANS20” while registering to get 10 percent off the regular price — $39.98. Those with their own appropriate brushes can register for $33.98, and, of course, veterans get the 10 percent discount off that, too. The registration price includes materials that’ll be shipped — for no extra charge

— to the participants who are going to create patriotic paintings they’ll proudly hang in their homes or posts, or send to children or grandchildren serving in the military, or what have you. The included materials are a 12 by 12 inch canvas, three brushes, paint, and paper palette. Participants will need to have old toothbrushes, paper towels, and a hairdryer to dry paint during the workshop. Because Dabble in Color has to acquire and ship supplies to participants, she urged veterans to register as long before July 3 as possible.

The rise of the virtual workshops Cathy Policare and Lucas started Dabble in Color in January last year. Both have art degrees. Both worked in newspapers for decades. “We decided to go out on our own and do something we have a passion for,” Lucas said. They started a mobile art-instruction business. They set up events all over the Treasure Coast for folks with no to great art skills. The women show folks how to reproduce an existing painting. Of course, the newer folks enjoy getting to create something that …

well, looks like something. The experienced painters use the presented piece as a template to add their own accents to it. Like all new businesses, they had to find some customers. “It takes a good year to get a clientele,” Lucas said. “We were just at the point where we were feeling secure, then boom.” Right, we all remember the boom. On March 2 the Florida Department of Health announced SARS-CoV-2/ COVID-19 was here. Few of us paid much mind. Then on March 9, Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency. Now most of us were looking. By around St. Patrick’s Day the news was getting worse and almost all of us were doing a sort of hurricane shopping for this new kind of storm. We started shunning crowds, and some of us started putting on masks. Oh, yeah, and cancelling events. People were cancelling events, including art workshops, left and right. The women at Dabble in Color lost all their business in days. They brainstormed and came up with the idea of doing what they always had — just using online group platforms, such as the new well known Zoom, to have virtual workshops. The set up the first in April. They had to stop taking

registrations at 43, because they’d run out of supplies to send the participants.

What folks are getting out of it Participants quickly discovered they could leave their cameras on, so all could see them, or turn the cameras off except to ask questions and show the instructors their work. Participants can join into online group conversations while creating the shared art, or call a participating friend or family member to have private conversation while sharing in the virtual group experience. Lucas said everybody has their own way to do the virtual workshops. She said some folks signing up for the virtual workshops would have never attended one any other way — they just prefer being at home. Of course, some can barely or not get out of the house. “The virtual classes were a Godsend,” she said. “We found a whole group of people who don’t want to go out.” Of course art is something the Department of Veteran Affairs touts for its therapeutic value to veterans. Independence Day isn’t cancelled. It’s a chance for folks to create patriotic paintings.

CHAMBERLAIN from page 5

In early 1865, Chamberlain regained command of the 1st Brigade, and he continued to act with courage and a fierce resolve. On March 29, 1865, his brigade participated in a major skirmish on the Quaker Road during Grant’s final advance that would finish the war. Despite losses, another wound (in the left arm and chest that almost caused amputation), and nearly being captured, Chamberlain was successful and brevetted to the rank of major general by President Abraham Lincoln. Chamberlain gained the name “Bloody Chamberlain” at Quaker Road.

Confederate surrender On April 9, 1865, Chamberlain was given the honor of commanding the Union troops attending the surrender of the Confederate Army under Gen. Robert E. Lee.

Chamberlain commanded his men, lined up on both sides of the road leading to Appomattox Courthouse, site of the formalities, to give the approaching Confederate troops a full rifle salute at attention. Chamberlain said in his memoirs that as Lee’s chief of staff, Gen. John Gordon, approached, he had his head bowed low over the neck of his horse. But on seeing the salute, straightened up and saluted back with honor. It was a poignant scene. From Chamberlain’s memoirs, as reported in Wikipedia. com (sources confirmed): “Gordon, at the head of the marching column, outdoes us in courtesy. He was riding with downcast eyes and more than pensive look; but at this clatter of arms he raises his eyes and instantly catching the significance, wheels his horse with that superb grace of which he is master, drops the point of his sword to his stirrup, gives a command, at which the great Confederate ensign following him is dipped and his decimated brigades, as

they reach our right, respond to the ‘carry.’ All the while on our part not a sound of trumpet or drum, not a cheer, nor a word nor motion of man, but awful stillness as if it were the passing of the dead.”

After the war Chamberlain returned to Maine after the war. Very soon, due to his immense popularity, he was urged to run for governor in 1866, and he went on to serve four terms. After his political life, he returned to Bowdoin College and taught every course but science and math. He eventually became president. Chamberlain suffered the rest of his life from his injuries at Petersburg. He wore a primitive kind of catheter bag, and had to have six operations, but none of them worked. He kept having infections and fevers, but he pressed on. Finally in 1914, he died, as a result of the original wounds at the Siege of Petersburg. He was a remarkable man who left an indelible mark on history.

EMPLOYMENT from page 3

their activities during the survey reference week (May 10th through May 16th). Workers who indicate they were not working during the entire survey reference week and expect to be recalled to their jobs should be classified as unemployed on temporary layoff. In May, a large number of persons were classified as unemployed on temporary layoff. “However, there was also a large number of workers who were classified as employed but absent from work. As was the case in March and April, household survey interviewers were instructed to classify employed persons absent from work due to coronavirus-related business closures as unemployed on temporary layoff. However, it is apparent that not all such workers were so classified. BLS and the Census Bureau are investigating

why this misclassification error continues to occur and are taking additional steps to address the issue.” In general times, those that are able to work and report not having jobs, but looked for employment in the previous 30 days, are counted as unemployed. Discouraged workers — those who are able to work and want jobs, but have not sought employment in the previous 30 days — are not counted in the unemployment figure. Many call this “shadow unemployment,” and it’s inherently difficult to track due to variations for why people don’t seek jobs. It’s important to note that longstanding bureau practices for measuring employment have never been tested to circumstances similar to the COVID-19 stay-at-home and social-distancing measures states and individuals implemented. It’s still too early to fully understand how the practices worked in the unique circumstances.

At press time the Department of Veteran Affairs has confirmed at least about 12,600 cases of SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 among veterans, up by about 3,600 cases in the 27 days since Veteran Voice last reported the VA’s numbers. There’ve been at least about 1,400 known deaths of veterans by COVID-19, which is up by about 425 since Veteran Voice last reported. The Veterans Health Administration currently counts about 1,460 cases of the novel coronavirus among veterans as “active,” and about 11,100 as “convalescent.” At least 34 VA medical workers — some of whom are also veterans — have also died of COVID-19, including at least one at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center. That’s up from 30 in the 27 days since Veteran Voice last reported on the VA’s COVID-19 tracking.

Orlando and West Palm Beach Orlando’s Lake Nona VA Medical Center has had 121 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among its veterans, workers and those fit into a category of “all other.” The center’s catchment area includes three counties in Veteran Voice’s catchment area: Volusia, Seminole and Brevard. their veterans, workers and “all other.” The VA reported the state had 139 active cases — 102 being veterans. It had 477 convalescent cases. Of those, 392 were veterans. There have been 27 reported deaths. At the same time the VA is reporting Florida had about 35,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 1,407 deaths. This indicates there’s a large delay in the VA’s reporting, because on the same day the Florida Department of Health, Division of Disease Control and Health Protection is reporting 66,000 cases in Florida — about 1,550 being non-residents — with 11,185 hospitalizations and 2,765 deaths. On the same day, the state’s health department is reporting almost 2 million confirmed cases of the corona-

demic straight from their smartphones. The team quickly responded by taking an existing human performance software known as Smartabase, which identifies health risks to the force, and adding a “COVID-19 Check-In” feature to monitor pre-and post-deployment health.

The seeker was designed to allow an upgraded “Spiral One” missile to acquire targets on both land and sea.

Other VA facilities The Bay Pines VA medical center has had 87 cumulative cases of COVID-19 with two deaths. Gainesville has had 63 cases and one death. The Miami VA medical center has had the most cases of the six in the state: 196 cases and six deaths. Tampa — 49 with four deaths.

Guard activation since 51,000 troops were called up after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in 2005. Army senior leaders recently published a letter to the entire service, reminding Soldiers and Army civilians they took an oath to protect the Constitution, which states that people can peacefully assemble and petition the government for a redress of grievances. “We will continue to support and defend those rights, and we will continue to protect Americans, whether from enemies of the United States overseas, from COVID-19 at home, or from violence in our communities that threatens to drown out the voices begging us to listen,” a portion of the letter read.

Keeping cool in intense times At times, though, it has been hard to do so in the face of aggressive protesters. A Soldier in the Minnesota Guard, along with others around the nation, was verbally berated by protesters while on a recent mission. Yet, in spite of the insults, he kept his cool. “He maintained his military bearing and stood firm,” Matthews said. “And he stayed there because he’s there to protect their right to do that protest.” The senior NCO has been impressed with how his teammates have reacted to those types of situations. “It’s difficult, but I think it shows that in our organization, from the top-down, we are here to support the folks of Minnesota,” he said. “We’re not here to engage in any kind of violent activity.” In one of his press conferences, Maj. Gen. Jon A. Jensen, adjutant general for the Minnesota Guard, made it clear that his force was “all in” for this mission. “I took it and ran with it,” Matthews said of his message. “I tell our Soldiers before they go out on their missions, ‘We’re all in for the people of Minnesota.’ And it’s just amazing to get to go out there and put it into action versus just saying words.”

Engaging protesters A resident of Brooklyn Park, a suburb of Minneapolis, Matthews said the majority of demonstrations in the area have been peaceful. He also often sees activists trying to put some of the few bad actors in line. During the recent dialogue, he said a couple of hostile protesters wanted to challenge him on political issues, but he respectfully declined to openly discuss them. When they kept pushing, another protester intervened and reminded them that the Soldiers were here to protect everyone and were not their enemy. It’s as if “we created new allies for us in the field,” Matthews said. That alliance was strengthened when Matthews, who mediates as part of his role as an EEO advisor, decided to address the crowd to ease the tension. “None of us want to see anybody get hurt,” he said in a video of the exchange posted onto YouTube. “None of us are happy about the current situation and the reason we got to be out here right now. But it’s all love, and we have to remember that we are all brothers and sisters. “Change doesn’t come as quick as you want it to, but it’s important that we don’t continue to tear things down as we look to move forward.” After speaking, the protesters cheered in solidarity and proceeded to chant: “UNI-TY! UNI-TY!” A smiling Matthews then headed deeper into the crowd, meeting more protesters and listening to them. The protester, who had criticized him with her loudspeaker moments before, spoke into it again and thanked him for his openness. “It was amazing to me just to see how, in a matter of about two or three minutes, she changed everything she had going on,” Matthews said. “Because she was able to see us as human beings as opposed to an occupational force.” And Matthews agreed with her and the other protesters who chanted “unity” after his remarks. “For me, I hope to see Minnesota united as one,” he said of the future. “And I hope to see that spread throughout the country.”

September, October Honor Flights cancelled to avoid virus risk Kathy Sreenan

SEFL HONOR FLIGHT

In another precautionary measure, Southeast Florida Honor Flight announces the cancellation of their scheduled September 26th and October 24th Honor Flights to Washington, DC. Both of the one-day trips of honor, each scheduled with 80 local WWII, Korean & Vietnam War veterans, will be cancelled due to a myriad of factors including the COVID-19 virus, and possible infection of the veterans, who are in the highest risk population. The decision is echoed by all of the 139 other Honor Flight hubs in 45 states nationwide. After canceling their two Spring 2020 Honor Flights, the Southeast Florida Honor Flight Board of Directors weighed many current issues to determine their best course of action for the planned Fall 2020 flights. Based on risk assessment, the possibility of exposing their older, vulnerable veterans to the COVID-19 virus, as well as no allowed crowd gatherings to welcome and welcome home the veterans at the airports, the Board unanimously voted to cancel the September and October flights. As much as the decision pains the organization to now forego honoring a total of 320 veterans in 2020, the health and safety of the veter-

ans, guardians and volunteers is paramount. Veterans and guardians that have been scheduled for the September and October flights will be contacted and instructed on their transferal to the organization’s scheduled Spring 2021 Honor Flights, which are planned for April and May. Exact dates for these flights are currently being negotiated. Southeast Florida Honor Flight is heartbroken to have to make the flight postponement decision, yet look forward to honoring the deserving, local veterans, 160 of whom will have been postponed twice, with the warmest celebration in the Spring of 2021. Southeast Florida Honor Flight, part of the National Honor Flight Network, is one of nine Honor Flight chapters/ hubs in Florida. Based in Stuart, FL, this hub serves veterans in Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, Okeechobee and Palm Beach Counties. Southeast Florida Honor Flight is dedicated to flying local WWII, Korean and Vietnam War veterans to their respective memorials in Washington, DC, free of charge to the veteran.
