STUART — For eight years, residents of Martin County have begun celebrating Independence Day on the last weekend in June. That’s when Ruby Lynn Baker

has put on her tribute to the nation and those who serve it with a program called “Celebration.” This year’s event takes place June 28-30 at the Kane Center. Angel Broennimann is the producer of this year’s show and it’s a family affair as her mother, Ruby Lynn Baker, is in the direc-

tor’s chair. Broennimann talked about the show and why her family stages it each year. “We call the weekend before July Fourth ‘Celebration Weekend,’she said. “‘Celebration’ is a patriotic and military tribute. It’s a tribute to our country, to veterans past. It’s not only a tribute to our vets, but to those that keep us safe on the home front, including police, firefighters, nurse and doctors.” This is the second year the show is at the Kane Center. “We wanted to have it here three years ago, but the theater wasn’t ready yet,” Broennimann said. “It’s a wonderful venue and the perfect place for us.” The show is a two-hour event,

with tributes in word and song. “We play America’s favorite music, like “America the Beautiful’ and ‘This Land is Your Land,” the producer said. “We have some scenes and skits and there’s history. This year, the theme is ‘We the People.’ There are a lot of historical quotes from people past and present. There’s a tribute to Harry Truman and a really cute scene between Harry and Bess Truman. Our first act is fun and history. Our second act is more of our military tribute. It’s a tribute to our vets who fought to give us this great nation.” The military tribute will include

Veteran Voice is a weekly publication designed to provide information to and about veterans to veterans and to the broader community. Veterans are an integral part of their Florida communities, which currently have individual organizations of their own, such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Vietnam Veterans of America and many other groups with a narrow focus, but no convenient way to connect to a wider population of veterans and to the community in general within a limited geographic area, their community. The mission of Veteran Voice is to publish a weekly source of information that will provide, in one place, a listing of resources available to veterans, articles about changes in policies or organizations affecting veterans and events of interest to veterans as well as articles about veterans of interest to the general public. Veteran Voice LLC is organized as a partnership of experienced newspaper executives with an interest in veterans and in the communities of Florida veterans and friends. Veteran Voice is a start-up intended to address a perceived lack of information readily available to veterans on programs and policies affecting them and objective reporting of veteran affairs to the public. To our knowledge, and based on comments from leaders of local veterans organizations, there was no media or website currently meeting this need until the launch of Veteran Voice. We hope you agree, and will support this publication with your subscription. Without subscriptions there will be a limited number of people we can help, without which this mission will not be realized. As part of our commitment to supporting local veteran communities, we will donate 10 percent of our profits each quarter to qualified veteran charities recommended by you, our readers and subscribers. Please let us know what you think by emailing news@veteranvoiceweekly.com or mailing your comments to us at 1919 S.W. South Macedo Blvd., Port St. Lucie, FL 34984.

a USO-style show with a trio reminiscent of the Andrews Sisters. There will also be a tribute to Martha Raye, who made many trips overseas to entertain the troops. “There’s a military tribute to all branches and we bring in local veterans’ groups,” Broennimann said. “They participate on stage. We do our own renditions of the songs of the different services.” The performances have attracted attention outside of Martin County. Dignitaries including the president, first lady and governor have sent letters of appreciation and been invited each year. “Last year, the governor was close to coming,” Broenniman said. “It was exciting that he was thinking about it.” A scheduling conflict prevented his attendance. In addition to celebrating the country, the performances have another purpose. They help to raise money and awareness for Honor Flight, the organization that takes veterans to Washington, D.C., to see the WW II Memorial. “A portion of the proceeds after we pay for expenses goes to Honor Flight,” Broennimann said. “Honor Flight will have a display and there’s a video we play before

the show. It’s on my bucket list to be an escort. My grandfather went years ago and he said it was one of the best experiences of his life. There’s not a lot (of WWII vets) left and we don’t have a lot of time to get them all there. “In addition to Honor Flight, the Road to Victory Museum will be there. They will be accepting donations and will have a display of military vehicles outside the Kane Center.” “Celebration” is one of two shows put on by Ruby Lynn Productions. The other is a Christmas show. All of the proceeds of that show go to local children’s charities to buy Christmas presents. “Everything is philanthropic,” Broennimann said. “It’s not for us, but for others, the only way we know, through music. I know I’m doing something worthwhile when I can look in the eyes of a grown man and see tears. It’s amazing.” Celebration 2013 will be presented at the Kane Center, 900 S.E. Salerno Road, Stuart, June 28-30. Performances are June 28-29 at 8 p.m. and June 29-30 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15. They may be purchased online at www.rubylynnprod.org. January. “His entire career, besides basic, was at Fort Eustis,” a JointBase Langley-Eustis spokeswoman said. “There is going to be a memorial service. That’ll probably be in mid-July.” She said Johnson was famed for his gregarious nature, and that he was very popular at the base. Johnson’s Facebook page shows a man who was proud of his 4-year-old son, Justin Johnson Jr. He also enjoyed motorcycles, comedy and music. His posts show a man who enjoyed life’s broad offerings, and had a profound depth of thought and feeling. On May 20, he wrote, “Sometimes I sit back and I wonder…. Am I where I should be in life? Have I lived up to my full potential up to this point? Am I the man and the father and son and companion I should be? But a wise man told me one day that ‘It’s not where you begin it’s were you end.’ ‘End Gain.’ So all I can do is try to improve day by day…… ‘End Gain’!!!” On May 14, he spoke about being a father. “4 years ago 2day. I had a lot of different feelings going on,” he wrote. “Scared, happy, anxious, excited, relieved, I didn’t want 2 fail. I didn’t know what I had ahead of me. All I know is I was trying my hardest 2 make sure I was successful @ the task ahead.” He went on to address his son. “I want u 2 b proud 2 say

‘That’s my Daddy.’ My right hand man Justin Rasard Johnson Jr (I call u June Bugg) my son. Happy b-day my man. I wish could b there, but this is the hand we where dealt some we gonna play.” Johnson joined the Army in July, shortly after graduating high school, in 2006. He completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. He did his advance individual training at Eustis. Army records say Johnson was a Mission Commander for the “Night-Riders” Convoy Escort Team in northern Afghanistan. Johnson was also a combat veteran of operations Iraqi Freedom and United Front in Iraq, 20082010. He was awarded and decorated with: the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement medals with one oak leaf cluster, the Army Good Conduct Medal with one knot, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the NATO ISAF Medal and the Drivers/Mechanics Badge. Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Palm Beach Gardens, entered comments about Johnson into the

JOHNSON from page 4 Congressional Record on June 20, after the Department of Defense released its public death notice. “As we remember Sgt. Johnson here today, let us also pay tribute to the sacrifices made by the military families who support our brave men and women in uniform, all the while knowing that their loved ones may not return home. Sgt. Johnson leaves behind his mother, Sonia Randolph, and a four-year-old son, Justin Johnson, Jr. Even faced with the loss of her son, Ms. Randolph remarked that she is ‘blessed that he was happy and willing to do what he needed to do for his country.’ This strength and dedication speaks volumes to the man that Sgt. Johnson was — a true American hero.” Andrew Connolly, assistant principal of South Fork, said the school was already planning to

erect a new flag pole with monuments recognizing the military branches when Johnson was killed. “We’ve got some things in the works,” he said. “We have a very strong Army (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) program at the school. We might find a way to recognize Sgt. Johnson while we’re at it.” He said community suggestions were welcomed. Three other soldiers died alongside Johnson in the attack. They were: Spc. Ember M. Alt, 21, of Beech Island, S.C.; Spc. Robert W. Ellis, 21, of Kennewick, Wash.; and Spc. William R. Moody, 30, of Burleson, Texas. All were assigned to 68th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 43rd Sustainment Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo. The family was traveling to receive Johnson’s body at press time and hadn’t yet announced funeral arrangements.

STUART — There’s plenty of patriotic fun to be had on Independence Day at Star Spangled Stuart. It’ll be Martin County’s only fireworks show this July 4. Events kick off at 7 a.m. with a good, old-fashioned soapbox derby. Mark Brechbill, board member of Star Spangled Stuart, said the race is sanctioned by the All-American Soap Box Derby Association. “The two winners from this event will go to Akron (Ohio) for the nationals,” he said. The International Soap Box Derby will be July 21 to 27. Star Spangled Stuart will climax with a half-hour fireworks show

starting at 9 p.m. “Of course, the fireworks,” Brechbill said. “Creative Fireworks is doing the performance. They’ve been doing it since the 50s. They’ve been doing it here in Stuart for a long, long time.” He said Creative Fireworks has 10- and 12-inch shells in its inventory, and it’s not afraid to use them. “They actually fill the sky all the way down to the river,” Brechbill said. The fireworks will shoot from a barge on the St. Lucie River. Folks gathered at Flagler Park’s Riverwalk will get an impressive show complete with soundtrack over loudspeakers. But those gathered on boats to watch the show will be able to listen, too. WSTU 1450 AM will interrupt its regular broadcast to play the

soundtrack for the fireworks. Between the soapbox derby and fireworks there’ll be music on two stages, the Riverwalk and Southern Eagle stages. Acts lined up at press time are Ben Prestage, Brooke Eden, the Stuart Community Band and Journey tribute band Never Stop Believing. Additional acts may show. Eden plays a fusion of country, rock and blues. The Stuart Community Band will play patriotic favorites. Brechbill had a difficult time describing the music of Ben Prestage. “New Orleans-style bluegrass” was what he came up with. “He’s unique,” Brechbill said. “He’s local and has a following.” The festivities officially launch

celebrate the nation’s independence, declared on July 4, 1776. In keeping with its patriotic customs, the city will host Freedomfest on July 4 at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center. The family-friendly tradition is one of the city’s biggest, one time attracting a whopping 10,000, city council members said. “Freedomfest is the culmination of all of our best holidays and it is a community event,” Councilwoman Michelle Berger said. “There is no bigger event in Port St. Lucie, I don’t think, than Freedomfest ... People are out in droves.” The free event, which includes free parking, takes more than eight months to plan and costs less than $10,000 to pull off. Last year, a band provided the event’s live music. This year, it’s one big dance party from 7:30-10 p.m., a city representative said. New food eating contests have also been added for aspiring competitive eaters just waiting for his or her big break on Travel Channel. “We do it every year and it gets bigger and better every year,” Mayor JoAnn Faiella said. “We’re pretty excited to have it again this year.” A staple of the event is the

spectacular fireworks display that ends the night. The show is set to last 30 minutes long. “The fireworks are second-tonone,” Vice Mayor Linda Bartz said. “It really is a great, great day.” Fanfare aside, Bartz said the day’s significance lies in honoring America’s independence, Constitution and troops who keep the nation free. “We all have a chance on July 4 to go out there and say, ‘We are free,’ ‘We thank you because we know freedom is not free,’” Bartz said, referring to honoring our nation’s veterans. The Martin Health System Village Square and the Port St. Lucie Civic Center are on the southeast corner of U.S. Highway 1 and Walton Road. Call (772) 807-4499 for more information. Freedomfest begins at 2 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m. For prime firework seating and an expanded food menu, the Freedomfest VIP party will feature a buffet (including pulled pork, chicken quarters or strips, hot dogs and all the fixings) starting at 6:30 p.m. on the back patio of the Civic Center. Tickets are on sale now for the VIP Party at a cost of $25 for adults and $10 for children 3 to 12 years old. Children 2 and younger are admitted free.

However, VIP ticket packages are available at the Lyric Theatre box office by calling (772) 2867827. Additionally, Brechbill said donations will be requested at the gates. “We almost lost the fireworks,” Bechbill said.

Stuart Main Street was close to letting the annual fireworks go. “I asked the board if they’d allow me to try to spearhead the effort,” Bechbill said. “We formed Star Spangled Stuart, a not-for-profit corporation. Any contributions anyone makes at the gates or anywhere else is all tax-deductible.” Star Spangled Stuart set out to find 20 Founding Fathers, folks who could afford to commit to $2,500-a-year donations. The fireworks and other Independence Day events, which draw about 30,000, cost around $30,000 to $40,000 a year. Star Spangled Stuart has 18 and is seeking at least two more. Lt. Bobby Carbonell has reported for duty. He’s the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs new director of legislative and cabinet affairs. The 30-year-old member of the Florida Air National Guard’s 125th Fighter Wing is taking on the job after Jim Brodie’s retirement. “I worked for the (Florida) Department of Military Affairs,” Carbonell said. “I’ve always worked closely with the FDVA.” The state veterans department works with the federal Department of Veterans Affairs, but is a separate organization. Carbonell was born in New Jersey, and raised in Gulf Breeze. He joined the Florida Army National Guard in 2000. His unit headed to the Middle East in December, 2002, for Operation Iraqi Freedom. “I was part of the initial invasion and stabilization force,” he said. Carbonell was in Iraq for about two years. He returned stateside in February 2004, and headed to Florida State University to study international affairs. He got a degree in 2007, and went to work for the state as a clerk at the Florida Senate. By 2004, he took post as the deputy legislative director for the department of military affairs. In 2010, he was commissioned in the Air National Guard. Carbonell said that an important part of his new job will be public awareness. “I just want to keep the focus,” he said. “As (Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan) winds down over the next few years, veterans’ stories won’t be in the forefront.” As the red, white and blue homecoming picnic banners are put away, he said many veterans will soon start realizing they need help. “We need to take care of the returning veterans now for the next 10, 15 years,” Carbonell said. “A lot of them don’t know they need help yet. Carbonell state’s veterans informed about the importance of enrolling in the VA medical system. “Only 49 percent of veterans are in the system at all,” Carbonell said. “You may not need a disability rating, but may need some medical care.” In a May interview, Steve Murray, communications director at the FDVA, said that there are about 1.6 million veterans in the state. “The last figure I have, and this is 2011 data, is that there were 669,205 veterans enrolled in the VA healthcare system,” he said. “Surely there’re more today.” The state department has about 100 veterans claims examiners, also called veterans service officers, who help veterans navigate the federal VA when applying for benefits. Most work at VA facilities around the state. The Florida Legislature just approved adding 13 new ones in its $74.5 billion 2013-2014 budget. There’s another important reason for veterans to enroll in the VA, even if they’re unlikely to use any of its services soon. The Veterans Health Administration is split among 23 Veterans Integrated Service Network regions. Each gets a share of the federal funding based on several factors, including the populations of veterans enrolled in their healthcare

Proceeds will purchase supplies and postage to send care package items to canines and the handlers currently serving in Afghanistan. For the safety of all participants at the Dog Wash for Heroes, participants are required to have one dog per handler, sturdy leashes (no retractable leashes), and collars with ID and tags are required for all dogs. Also, dogs must be at least 4 months old, no females in heat, and no aggressive dogs. All dogs must leave the Square Grouper by 11:30 a.m. Sponsorship opportunities are available and volunteers are needed. For additional information on this event, please email dogwash2013@aol.com, call Lynne Gibbons, event coordinator at (561) 512-9874 or visit OperationCareForHeroes/Facebook.

WASHINGTON – In observance of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) awareness month, the Department of Veterans Affairs National Center for PTSD invites the public to participate in its “Take the Step” campaign. “Every day of the year, we should focus on assisting those who have served our Nation,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “In June, during PTSD awareness month, we take special care to help Veterans with PTSD. VA is a leader in providing state-of-the-art, high-quality mental health care that improves and saves veterans’ lives. PTSD treatment can help and there is hope for recovery for veterans who need mental health services.” Throughout the month, online at www.PTSD.va.gov, the campaign has highlighted different topics so visitors can “Take the Step” to: know more about PTSD; challenge their beliefs; explore the treatment options available; and reach out to make a difference. VA provides effective PTSD treatment for veterans and conducts extensive research on PTSD, including prevention of stress disorders. Veterans are encouraged to use VA’s PTSD resources so they are able to recognize symptoms and seek help if the need arises. VA also encourages veterans to share what they learn with someone they know to build awareness and support systems. Following exposure to trauma, most people experience stress reactions but many do not develop PTSD. Mental health experts are not sure why some people develop PTSD and others do not. However, if stress reactions do not improve over time and they disrupt everyday life, VA encourages veterans to seek help to determine if PTSD may be a factor. “Many barriers keep people with PTSD from seeking the help they need,” said Dr. Matthew Friedman, executive director of VA’s National Center for PTSD. “Knowledge and awareness, however, are key to overcoming these barriers. For those living

with PTSD, knowing there are treatments that work, for example, can lead them to seek needed care. Greater public awareness of PTSD can help reduce the stigma of this mental health problem and overcome negative stereotypes that may keep many people from pursuing treatment.”

PTSD Awareness Month Highlights: • The purpose of PTSD Awareness Month is to raise public awareness of PTSD and its effective treatments so that everyone can help people affected by PTSD. • Throughout June explore weekly features at www.ptsd. va.gov. • “Ten Steps to Raise PTSD Awareness” provides links to materials that foster greater understanding of trauma, PTSD and treatment. It offers practical suggestions for the public to raise PTSD awareness in their own community. • For continued involvement, please sign up for the PTSD Monthly Update. Stay up on new information about PTSD and trauma year round. On June 3, VA announced it had hired a total of 1,607 mental health clinical providers to meet the goal of 1,600 new mental health professionals outlined in the President’s Aug. 31, 2012, Executive Order. Additionally, VA had hired 2,005 mental health clinical providers to fill existing vacancies, as well as 318 new peer specialists towards the specific goal of 800 peer specialists by Dec. 31, 2013 as outlined in the Executive Order. Throughout the summer, VA will hold mental health summits at each of its 152 medical centers across the nation to establish and enhance positive working relationships with their community partners. The summits will help encourage community engagement in order to better address and understand the broad mental health care needs of veterans and
