Making the move How to safely minimize stress for military pets (and their humans) Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER

mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com

For those being deployed in another state or another country, making the move can be stressful enough. For our furry companions, though, the experience can be downright frightening. With the help militaryonesource.mil and others around the internet, there are some very helpful tips to help ease the transition.

Before making the move MilitaryOne Source recommends the following before you even make the move: Give your pet an identification tag. The tag should display the name of your pet, your cellphone number and the phone number of an emergency contact. Take a picture of your pet so that you can show people what it looks like should it get lost during the move. Consider having your veterinarian insert an identification microchip under your pet’s skin. When moving to another state: Visit the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s website to see if there are rules for bringing animals into the state to which you have been assigned. (https://www. usa.gov/federal-agencies/animal-and-plant-health-inspection-service) There may be a limit to the number of pets that you can have on a military installation. Look up the regulations for your installation before you start to pack.

Moving overseas Contact the consulate or embassy in the country to which you were assigned to learn about the rules for bringing in pets. Many overseas destinations require that pets have mi-

crochips with a number that matches the number on the health certificate. Check the airline travel requirements for pet crates before buying a crate. Write your name, your pet’s name and your destination address on the crate. If your pet is unfriendly, then put a warning on the crate. Ask your airline if you need to reserve a space on the flight for your pet. Some countries may require your pet to be quarantined for an extended amount of time before it can live with you. The cost associated with that quarantine can be pricey. The Department of Defense may reimburse you for up to $550 if you are an active-duty member moving to a country where the quarantine period is mandatory.

Fostering options According to the American Humane organization (americanhumane.org) there are options available for those facing deployment where pets are not allowed. These include: “When servicemen and women are called for duty, the first and best option in arranging for the care of their companion animals is to find a family member, friend or neighbor who can temporarily take in the animals. But

Almost every sporting event in the United States has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To help fill the void, this series looks at sports heroes who also served in the military. Kristi Koplin has an impressive athletic background in track and field. She currently holds Southern Utah University’s school record in the hammer throw, discus and weight throw. She was an alternate in the 2014 Olympics and is a former member of the Army’s World Class Athlete Program in the bobsled. These days Koplin is experiencing victory as a captain in the Army Nursing Corps with the 328th Field Hospital at Fort Douglas, Utah; a nurse at Urgent Care in Heber City and Park City, Utah; and a graduate of U.S. Army Airborne School.

Olympics come calling In 2014, Koplin was selected as an alternate in the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. For the next three

years she competed on the North American and World Cup circuits. In 2018 and 2019, she began training for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. In early January 2020, Koplin crashed during her second-to-last run of the North American Cup Bobsled and Skeleton in Lake Placid, New York, suffering head and neck injuries. “I was knocked unconscious and woke up with the bobsled smashing my head against the ice and crushing my neck,” she said during a recent interview with DOD News. “The crash ended my season early and I left for home to recover. By some miracle, I was not seriously injured.”

Reluctant retirement Koplin announced June 23 that she’s retiring from the sport. “I still have concerns about my brain health. I have suffered a few concussions and I worry about the cumulative effect of these,” she said. “I love bobsledding so much, the speed and racing, the opportunity to represent our nation as

PTF 3 Restoration Project hit hard by pandemic Historic boat was part of Aug. 2 Gulf of Tonkin incident Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

Al Schweitzer, president of the PTF 3 Restoration Project in DeLand, says researchers know exactly where Patrol Torpedo Fast 3 was on Aug 2, 1964. The Gulf of Tonkin. The Gulf of Tonkin getting chased by the North Vietnamese navy’s torpedo boats. According to records uncovered by restoration project researchers, the crew was making a run for cover by the U.S.S. Maddox, which warned off the North Vietnamese torpedo boats with shots. What followed was more or less America’s official entry into the Vietnam War — the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution Congress passed on Aug. 7, 1964. Today PTF 3 “Fast and Nasty” is at the DeLand Naval Air Station Museum at the DeLand Municipal Airport. The hope of the PTF 3 Restoration Project is the get the 80-foot boat back into the Intercoastal Waterway with a new mission — educating people. “We’re still working on it,” Schweitzer said. “It’s an ongoing process.” The restoration started in 2003. The project figures it’ll take about $250,000 and lots of volunteer time to get PTF 3 into the waters for the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps and other organizations to use for training and public education.

Raising money has always been laborious. Now, Schweitzer said, it’s impossible. “Without the cookie jar out, we’re not getting any donations,” he said. The DeLand Naval Air Museum is closed due to the SARSCoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic. Social distancing is impossible inside there. The PTF 3 Restoration Project usually has a donation box out for admirers to fill. Of course, with the museum closed and gates locked, folks stop their cars, take a couple pictures of PTF 3, and drive on. PTF 3 Restoration volunteers also go to events to set up tables where people are interested in vintage watercraft, such as the Sunnyland Antique Boat Festival in Mount Dora. “They cancelled that till next year,” Schweitzer said. Another big awareness and fundraiser event for the PTF 3 restoration is the annual Volusia County Veterans Day Parade in DeLand. “I’m worried about Veterans Day,” Schweitzer said. “Are we going to have a Veterans Day event? DeLand has a big parade.” Those volunteer hours — gone for now, too. “With the virus, it’s just really slowed everything down,” Schweitzer said. “A lot of our volunteers — we’re all old. We’re all in our mid-70s at least. We have to be careful with the virus.” The Historic Naval Ships

Photo by Patrick McCallister Restoration of the PTF 3 Fast and Nasty PT Boat is going into its 17th year. This boat played a pivotal part of the Gulf of Tonkin incident that led to the escalation of the Vietnam War. That boat is on informal display at the DeLand Naval Air Station Museum in Volusia County.

Association says that the PTF 3 was the first in the NASTY-class — wooden hull — patrol torpedo boats. The boat was built in Norway in 1963 and headed straight to Southeast Asia. The association says PTF-3 was a, “spook boat’ operated by the MAC V SOG, Maritime Special Operations. The PTF 3 and five others did special operations along North Vietnamese shores. “It was during a series of raids from 31 July to 4 August 1964 on Hon Mei Island in North Vietnam that the North Vietnamese counter

attacked the PTF Boats with their torpedo boats, chasing the PTF Boats away from the coast and into the path of two U.S. Navy destroyers, the USS Maddox and the USS Turner Joy,” reads the association’s web site, www.hnsa.org. “The ensuing naval battle is known to history as the Tonkin Gulf Incident.” Folks can see the historic craft at 910 Biscayne Blvd., DeLand.

supply of food and favorite toys, as well as litter boxes and litter for cats. Create a written pet care agreement. The agreement should cover important issues such as what will happen to the pet if the temporary caregiver can no longer care for him, who is liable for any damage done by the pet, what will happen if the owner is unable to reclaim the pet, and what happens if the pet is injured or dies while in the temporary home. Taking care of all these things may seem an extra headache on top of everything else involved in deploying — but our furry companions are worth every bit. And you won’t have as much worry while you’re away.

Aaron Vaughn Memorial Frogman Swim& Run races against pandemic Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

Every June for the last eight years some of the most fit swimmers in Florida made their ways to Jensen Beach to be part of the Aaron Vaughn Memorial Frogman Swim & Run. “Last year we had over 600 participants,” said Tara Baldwin, Aaron Vaughn’s sister and president of Operation 300. They didn’t get to this year. Special Operations Chief Aaron Carson Vaughn’s birthday, June 24, came and went with no annual memorial swim. You know, coronavirus pandemic. Even if Martin County hadn’t cancelled all events at its facilities, a lot of athletes fear lung damage from getting COVID-19 forever hurting their performance. These are people who live to run, live to swim. The folks at Operation 300 — more about that organization in a bit — waited on pins and needles to see if they’d be able to do the annual event around Aug. 6. That’s the day Vaughn died while serving in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Nope, Martin County’s Jensen Beach Park is not going to open for any events for the foreseeable future. “That left us no option,” Baldwin said. “If we wanted to have it, we had to go virtual.” The ninth annual Aaron Vaughn Memorial Frogman Swim & Run will be … anytime racers want to do it in August. They have until Aug. 15 to sign up, then do their virtual events wherever they

want. Avid athletes are familiar with Garmin, Strava and other exercise tracking apps, but Operation 300 isn’t requiring them. This is all on the honor system. “We encourage people who do it on their own to take pictures and videos and post them to our social media,” Baldwin said. Registration is at www. op300.org. Look under the events tab. Registration, which includes a packet with T-shirt that’ll be mailed, is $35 to $75 depending on the event chosen.

Vaughn’s death Vaughn was among 17 SEALs who died in the Aug. 6, 2011, shooting of a Chinook helicopter, Extortion 17, in the Tangi River Valley, Afghanistan. In all 38 died in the shooting, including five members of the Navy Special Warfare support personnel, three Army Rangers, two members of the Colorado National Guard, two members of the Air Force Pararescue, and an Air Force combat controller. Additionally, seven members of the Afghan National Army commandos and an interpreter died, as did a military working dog. It was the deadliest event in Naval Special Warfare history since the invasion of Normandy beaches on June 6, 1944. Growing up close to her brother in Tennessee gave Baldwin a lot of insight into Vaughn’s priorities and what he’d want her to think about after his death. She thought about his young children, a 2-year-old son and 9-week-old daughter. Being a Gold Star family

member who shared in a large single-event loss of military lives, Baldwin’s thoughts turned to the others, too. That led to thinking more broadly about those who died in operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. “It just hit me, how many kids are out there in the same situation?,” Baldwin previously told Veteran Voice.

Operation 300 Baldwin and other family members decided that caring for children was the best way to honor Vaughn. In 2012 that idea became Operation 300 in Martin County. And, yes, the “300” is a reference to the Battle of Thermopylae when Leonidas I and a small group of Spartans stayed behind for a hopeless fight against far superior Persian forces while other Greek forces withdrew to regroup. The Spartans weren’t alone, but were undoubtedly the best trained and most effective fighters at the battle. Their

ONE HUNDRED HOURS Gulf War revisited on eve of anniversary Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

Perestroika was on everybody’s lips. The Berlin Wall had come down with the East German military’s help. The Soviet Union was breaking up in the color revolutions — communism was waning. The 1980s ended and the 1990s started with hard-won optimism that we were heading toward the post-authoritarian world. War would soon be a thing of the past it almost seemed. Then Iraq invaded Kuwait on Aug. 2, 1990, shattering any thoughts the world was getting together to sing “Kumbaya” after all.

One young soldier’s story George Landry was 18 and in Army bootcamp looking forward to a military police career. He had no idea events on the other side of the globe meant he was about to get acquainted with the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and BGM-71 TOW missiles in the Saudi Arabian desert. “When I graduated bootcamp and AIT, they cancelled the leave and they shipped us to Fort Knox,” Landry said. He added, “We got issued all of our stuff in nine days and they sent us to the Gulf.” Landry and the others were heading to Operation Desert Shield. They’d soon take part in a remarkable ground war that lasted almost exactly 100 hours. Those 100 hours of amazing performance allayed widespread fears of American service members being in a long, bloody military and diplomatic Middle East quagmire. The service women and men made the victory look so easy that Americans seemed to quickly forget how big the war really

was. The Battle of Medina Ridge and Battle of 73 Easting were two of the largest tank battles the United States has ever had. The Marine Corps had the largest tank battle of its history at the Kuwait International Airport, the Reveille Engagement. By the way, Landry largely credits the presence of Vietnam veterans at Operation Desert Shield/Storm for America’s quick victory. He said those combat veterans had time to ready the younger service members. But, all that’s largely forgotten as Operation Desert Storm faded into pre-Sept. 11, 2001, obscurity to become the “First Gulf War,” a term that falls from few lips with the respect its warriors deserve.

August 2, 1990 On Aug. 2, 1990, about 120,000 Iraqi forces swept into Kuwait with ease, brutally crushing any significant resis-

tance within hours. At the time, Iraq had what most believe was the fifth largest military on the planet with about a million members. That size of a military took about half of Iraq’s able-bodied men in service ages and a quarter of its annual budget. Kuwait on the other hand had about 20,000 in its military. Despite months of growing tensions Iraq had with its neighbors over oil production — which affected prices, thus Iraq’s income — the Kuwaiti military was in a relaxed posture. Indeed, when Iraq invaded the country a large portion of Kuwaiti military commanders were reportedly away on vacations. OK, some think many of them ran to and claimed they were already on vacation in other countries. At the time Iraq was under crushing debt from the IranIraq War that raged from 1980 to 1988. Kuwait held much of that war debt. There was also a widespread belief in

Iraq that Kuwait allowed slant drilling into the Rumaila oil field taking its underground treasure. On top of all that, there was also a longstanding sentiment in Iraq that Kuwait was part of its territory European powers had ripped away with arbitrary mapmaking after the fall of the Ottoman Empire in the Great War. The invasion, in hindsight, seems predictable. Saddam Hussein, who held all the titles of power in Iraq including president, was capricious, volatile and every other synonym for dangerously impatient and unstable. Still, Sunni Muslim countries — and the U.S. for that matter — befriended him and downplayed his erratic, despotic nature. At least they did when Hussein was making war on the even more despised Iran. Saudi Arabia and others had taken the position that Hussein is a tyrannical madman, but he’s our tyrannical

The Sheriff administered the oath of office as the 23 volunteers who will lead the organization for the next year until July 2021, and promised to support the missions of the VMC, local laws and regulations as well as the American Constitution, a variation of the oath all have taken before when joining the military or other organizations. The Executive Committee which leads the combined BVC and VMC will be Donn Weaver

(USA), BVC Chairman and VMC Vice President; Dean Schaaf (USN Vet), VMC President and BVC Vice Chairman; Bill Muckler (USMC Vet) BVC/VMC Treasurer; and Ted Schmid (USN Vet), BVC/VMC Secretary. Most BVC/VMC Board members are also active in other military veteran organizations including many from local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts; the local Disabled American Veterans Chapter 123; 7 from the Military Officers Association of America, Cape Canaveral Chapter; 4 from Rolling Thunder FL-1 Chapter and many more. For many veterans the concept of volunteer service among other veterans is a natural extension of their military experience.

Thanks to the new VMC leadership Team for stepping up and continuing their work to support veterans and the community. The VMC includes almost 500 members: over 60 active volunteers at the museum, store and library: the 6,000-square-foot Museum, a Military themed sales Store; a 4,000-volume military library; three meeting and rental facilities; an 82 acre Veterans Memorial Park and much more. The VMC Museum reopened on June 1st so visitors are welcome every day from10 a.m.- 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon-4 p.m. The VMC is located behind Merritt Square Mall off SR 520. sacrifice worked — the regrouped Greeks gave the Persians a blistering defeat. Operation 300 runs mentoring camps for children of fallen servicemembers. The children are paired up with volunteer mentors, who also keep in touch with them after the camps, to do things such as fishing, horseback riding, snorkeling, shooting, hunting. While the children are spending time with mentors, their surviving parents get respite care at a Martin County hotel. The families pay nothing for any of it. Operation 300 takes care of everything. So, of course, it needs a splashy event to draw attention, volunteers and money.

Aaron Vaughn Memorial Frogman Swim+Run The annual Frogman Swim has been around since the start of Operation 300. Organizers picked swimming as a fundraiser to honor the Navy SEALs Vaughn was proud to be a part of. The “& Run” part was added last year for athletes who prefer land sports. Technically, it’s been the Aaron Vaughn Memorial Frogman Swim for eight years. The Aaron Vaughn Memorial Swim & Run started last year. The virtual run has 5K and 10K categories. Walkers and welcomed. The swim has 200 meter, 1K and 5K categories.

an athlete and the process of working towards a goal that I have been envisioning for a large part of my life. However, I also value my health and the decision has been something weighing on me since the accident.” “I am always looking forward to my next dream to chase. I am absolutely positive that everything works out exactly like it is supposed to,” she added. Bobsled can be a dangerous sport where speeds often exceed 75 mph. A number of athletes have been killed and most have experienced mild to severe injuries in crashes.

New career in nursing These days Koplin is very busy nursing and dealing with COVID-19 patients. “I remember the day when they announced that two of the Utah Jazz [basketball] players had tested positive and the entire NBA season would be postponed,” she said, referring to the National Basketball Association. “The

news itself shocked me. The virus felt like it had hit home. From that point forward, everything changed.” The Urgent Care in Park City became one of the nation’s first testing sites for COVID-19, she said. A lot of people tested positive in the area because it’s a tourist destination for international travelers, particularly during the Sundance Film Festival, which took place in January and February, as the coronavirus was beginning to rapidly spread.

Iraq and Afghanistan at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. Being a nurse has been a good fit for her Olympic ambitions too, she said. Her training gives her an appreciation and understanding of how the body works and the important roles played by exercise and nutrition. Also, her expertise was occasionally needed during training, such as when a bobsled crashes and once when an athlete from another sport was injured by a javelin.

‘Focus shifted’

Using sports to help achieve dreams

About that time, she said “We started testing people and educating the community about how to stay safe. With all the unknowns and uncertainty, I could feel the panic emoting from most of the patients I saw.” “My focus shifted,” she continued. “I was no longer worried about my recovery from the bobsled injury but how to react to this unknown virus invading our lives.” Koplin said some of her most rewarding experiences were caring for wounded and injured soldiers returning from

As a former member of the World Class Athletic Program, Koplin urges others to use that organization as a means for achieving their dreams. She said there are perhaps many soldiers who have it in them to compete and would love to become Olympians, but don’t realize how easy it is to apply, simply by visiting the WCAP website, looking up the criteria for a chosen sport and filling out an application. Koplin mentioned that even with drive and determination,

she would have struggled without the support of WCAP in terms of coaching, providing first-class training facilities and financing. “Being in WCAP took away any worries so I could focus 100% on training.”

Maintain armed forces readiness There are several factors that aspiring athletes should consider, she said. First and foremost, the person should be a good soldier. While training, it is up to each soldier to continue to meet the Army’s requirements, including the physical fitness test and annual weapons qualification. Also, living the Army values, she said. Training and diet play an enormous part too, she said, noting that she does rigorous workouts with weights and sprinting six days a week. One final factor that Koplin said it takes — and she hesitated to mention it for fear of sounding mean — is genetics. “No matter how self-motivated and hard-working you are, if you don’t have the genes for your chosen sport, you won’t succeed,” she said.

GULF

from page 7 madman. They thought they had him on an invisible leash. They were wrong, and by Aug. 3, 1990, the Middle East and world feared the Butcher of Baghdad, who now controlled upwards to 20 percent of the planet’s oil extraction, was just getting started on expanding his territory. Iraq borders on five countries — Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, and, of course, Iran and Kuwait. With Kuwait in hand it now had greater access to the Persian Gulf, which laps onto the shores of Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

August 7, 1990 All eyes turned toward the United States, the superpower that’d won the Cold War. By Aug. 7, 1990, President George H.W. Bush acting on the Carter Doctrine — that stated the U.S. would use military force if needed to protects its interests in the Persian Gulf region — announced he was going to deploy troops to guard Saudi Arabia. Operation Desert Shield was born. It’d eventually have about 700,000 U.S. military personnel — many of them National Guard and Reserve — in and around the Persian Gulf. Allied nations sent about another 250,000 military personnel. Hussein responded the next day by declaring Kuwait as Iraq’s 19th province and set up a cousin to be the military governor. The United Nations and Arab League passed resolutions condemning the invasion and forced annexation. Hussein showed nothing but intransigence. His deputy prime and foreign minister, Tariq Aziz, later told reporters Hussein fully believed working- and middle-class Muslims the world over backed and would eventually fight for him among other insane ideas assuring him victory. The U.N. Security Council answered the annexation with Resolution 687 on Nov. 29, 1990. That gave Iraq until Jan. 15, 1991, to vacate Kuwait, and authorized a forming coalition of nations to use force if needed to free Kuwait. Eventually 34 nations as diverse as the Netherlands and Senegal would be in the

coalition with Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf Jr. in charge. By December, 1990, Landry would arrive in Saudi Arabia. “We got over there unassigned,” he said. “We got assigned when we were in country. I remember there were 300, 400 of us there without a unit.” An officer told the soldiers they could volunteer for the XVIII Airborne Corps or VII Corps. “Me and two of my buddies heard ‘airborne,’ so we said, ‘18th.’” Which landed them in the 3rd Armored Cavalry. “We weren’t tankers by no means, so why are we here?,” Landry jovially reminisced. His team moved to a new location every night. They were all living on two MREs and a liter of water daily each. Landry’s sense of the world narrowed to where he was standing at the moment. He had no rank, so nobody felt the need to give him updates. He had few letters from home thanks to unreliable mail. And he had no access to newspapers and CNN. But as Landry dealt with the problems of a soldier in a desert mostly concerned about sitting too long and becoming an easy target, most of the rest of the world shuddered in fear of a coming battle with the well-armed, battle-hardened Iraq. It was assumed there was a near universal cultish devotion to Hussein. Particularly among the feared Republican Guard.

January 16, 1991 Jan. 15, 1991, came and went. All was quiet. President Bush shrugged off the important date when reporters asked him about it. It seemed maybe the whirlwind of failed negotiations had made more progress than either the U.S. or Iraq was letting on. On Jan. 16 that hope was shattered. The 42-day air campaign started. Within days Americans had new terms in their daily lexicons. “Sortie.” “Battle damage assessment.” “Target-rich environment.” Vietnam was the televised war. The now Operation Desert Storm was the video game war. Schwarzkopf and others appeared in daily press gaggles with infrared video from planes, cruise missiles and

smart bombs showing destruction in a way none outside the military ever had. It took on the feel of watching a 1980s video game. American and other nation’s pilots quickly crushed the Iraqi air force and air defenses then turned their attention to crippling the country’s ability to wage ground war. As the weeks wore on, military planners started realizing they were bombing the same targets they had days earlier. Yet Iraq was stubbornly staying in Kuwait. A feared ground offensive to retake the small country was going to happen. It was just a question of how soon, and what was going to hap-

pen when it started. Iraq’s air force was destroyed, its ability to move troops in country hampered, its electronic intelligence gelded, but nobody knew if the soldiers in Iraq’s “19th province” were going to go down without taking a lot of lives with them. “The night before the battle, Schwarzkopf showed up and talked to the 3rd,” Landry said. “They gave us all a baked potato and a piece of steak.” The joy of a good meal faded when Vietnam-era cohorts told the younger soldiers to think of it as their welcome to combat.

Weekly Briefs Marines donate plasma in fight against COVID-19 Marines assigned to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego in California who have tested positive for COVID-19 donated plasma at Naval Medical Center San Diego. In support of the development of an effective treatment, The Defense Department launched a campaign in late May to collect 8,000 units of plasma from patients who have recovered from COVID-19. “The hope is that these Marines who have tested positive and recovered from COVID-19 will have developed antibodies,” said Ellyn Alcantara, a clinical nurse assigned to the medical center’s blood donor center. “These antibodies could lead to developments in a treatment for COVID-19.”

Deceased soldier identified The Department of Defense announced the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve. Sgt. Bryan Cooper Mount, 25, from St. George, Utah, died as the result of a vehicle rollover accident while conducting reconnaissance operations, July 21, 2020, in Eastern Syria. The incident is under investigation. Mount was assigned to 1st Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Air Force safety training goes virtual During a normal year, the Air Force Safety Center delivers in-house safety education and training to approximately 2,000 students through 11 professional courses in 70 sessions, with course lengths ranging from three days to seven weeks. This includes all personnel assigned to safety staff and/or supporting safety Air Force-wide who go through the Aircraft Mishap Investigation Course, or AMDI, at Kirtland Air Force Base, ensuring the Air Force has fully trained mishap investigators. On March 13, AFSEC cancelled in-residence courses indefinitely, including two courses that were in session, due to the coronavirus. The cancelation led to 24 cancelled classes and 720 U.S. and international military and civilian students being denied access to safety education and training requirements over the subsequent four months, but AFSEC is actively doing something about that. Transitioning to six courses in July, an

additional 168 students are scheduled to attend seven classes by the end of the month with more slated for August.

Innovative light technology can help save COVID-19 lives Over the last several months, the world changed dramatically due to the COVID-19 pandemic. American families were crushed with the responsibility of the new “normal” wearing face masks, practicing at least six feet of social distancing and keeping social activities to a minimal level. While it is becoming easier to manage these new expectations, other preventative measures are being tested and discovered, adding to the health and safety of people across the globe. Recently, the 189th Airlift Wing in coordination with the wing’s innovation team started implementing the Krypton Light Disinfection system. Working with FAR UV Technologies, a Missouri-based medical technology company, the wing plans to install 50 UV lights throughout the campus and eventually innovate ways to utilize the light sources inside aircraft. The lights being installed may sound like a process already implemented in some facilities, but a difference in the amount of light used is what allows FAR UV Technologies’ product to stand out. According to Far UV Technologies, this groundbreaking technology safely and effectively kills airborne or surface pathogens in occupied locations. This means that while on duty, Airmen throughout the wing will have constant, additional protective measures in place to keep them safe and healthy.

Marine Expeditionary Unit back from 7-month deployment The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit returned to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, marking the end of a seven-month deployment to the U.S. 2nd, 5th and 6th Fleets with the USS Bataan Amphibious Ready Group. While forward deployed aboard the ships of the USS Bataan ARG, the 26th MEU served as a crisis-response force for combatant commanders in the Europe, Africa and Central commands. The 26th MEU supported operations and engagements, conducted theater security cooperation activities with bilateral partners, and executed sustainment training to ensure the force was postured and prepared to respond to crises and contingencies.

President George H.W. Bush meets soldiers of the 197th Brigade, 24th Infantry Division, upon his arrival at their camp for a Thanksgiving Day visit during Operation Desert Shield in Saudi Arabia, Nov. 25, 1990.

from page 10 “I knew after that anytime you go from MREs to a hot meal one day, something bad is going to happen the next,” Landry said.

February 24, 1991 At about 4 a.m. on Feb. 24, 1991, Coalition forces launched into Kuwait. This was going to be a lightning, multi-pronged tank war. “Our mission was the cross into Iraq and turn left to Basra and head to Baghdad,” Landry said. American military planners were served up a surprise. The Iraqi tanks were obsolete in terms of targeting and range and the Americans were much better trained. The tank battles were lopsided. Landry said that doesn’t mean they were easy. There was still a wall of Iraqi tanks to get through. “We were involved in that tank battle and it got crazy,” he said. The Iraqi fighters figured it out and surrendered so fast it slowed the coalition’s progress. Those that didn’t hang out white flags rushed north creating what’d come to be known as the Highway of Death. The coalition couldn’t risk them fleeing, regrouping, and resurging. But none of the American generals were celebrating. They’d set a trap for Iraq’s best fighters, the ones thought most cultishly devoted to Hussein, the Republican Guard. The bulk of the Republican Guard were north of Kuwait. The aim was to get them to move south to join the fighting and pick them off before they could get into favorable positions. But the Iraqis fleeing Kuwait prevented the Republican Guard from heading south and joining the fray. American generals kept the shooting going waiting for the chance to crush the Republican Guard out of existence. But things were turning from battle to massacre. Military and political leaders were getting queasy with it. Finally, with no surrender signaled from Hussein, the U.S. and coalition forces called off the

ground war on Feb. 28, almost exactly 100 hours after it started. What soon followed was a predominantly Shi’a Muslim uprising in Basra, followed by uprisings in other places, particularly in the Kurdish regions in the north. Hussein’s defeated military wasn’t a declawed one. The uprisings were cruelly crushed, and the reprisals were barbaric. The outraged world opted to sit by.

Landry’s reminiscences Landry had no idea any of that was happening at the time. His chain of command kept his fellow soldiers and

him alert for a resurgence of war as they inched toward heading home. “You didn’t know if it was truly a ceasefire, or if they said, ‘We give up,’ trying to figure out a new way to attack. Everybody was still on edge for two weeks after.” When Landry saw equipment loading onto ships and planes— “That’s when, ‘Wow we’re done; we get to go home’,” he said. Landry stayed in the Army until 1997. A few years later, the calendars turned to 2000, and the world celebrated. The optimism was renewed. It was a new millennium.

Then the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks happened. America returned to Iraq in 2003 for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Landry rejoined the Army in 2004 and returned to Iraq as a soldier two more times. In 2006 a court operating under the Interim Government ordered Hussein’s hanging for the 1982 Dujail Massacre of almost 150 Shi’a Muslims. His execution was carried out on Dec. 30. The world went into 2007 without Hussein. Landry served in the Army until 2013. He said he rarely thinks about the 100 remarkable hours he lived when America liberated Kuwait.
