Nazi invaders land in Florida Operation Pastorius saboteurs executed Aug. 8 Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
This is Florida, so, you know, crazy magnet. Like that time when Nazis overran our beaches in 1942. OK, “overran” is a stretch. But, on June 17, 1942, four German Nazi terrorists boated onto Ponte Vedra’s shores, buried a bunch of stuff, and started their part in Operation Pastorius. Their mission was to disrupt wartime manufacturing and strike fear into the hearts of Americans. Instead, the four and another small team who’d landed in New York days earlier helped puff up the wartime economy by spending $612 on clothes, food and lodging, then got caught, tried, and finally executed on Aug. 8, 1942. Well, most of them were executed. Two got their death penalties commuted to long prison sentences that instead ended in clemency in 1948. It’s easy to think Adolph Hitler — who’d certainly been briefed on and approved the terrorist plot — was out of his fascist mind to think it was worth risking two U-boats and the equivalent of $2.8 million in today’s money to get eight saboteurs onto American soil. The idea wasn’t quite as la-la as it might now seem. They could have done a lot of damage. Could have, except America owes a debt of gratitude and remembrance to a U.S. Army veteran and former Florida hotel worker who’d foiled the plot — George Dasch, who was one of the covert operatives come to our shores to blow things up.
Adm. Wilhelm Canaris The United States entered World War II in December of 1941 following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. This was a major problem for Germany, who’d already started a war with the Soviet Union while Britain was still in the fight. Germany needed to come up with an affordable

disruption campaign to thwart America’s movement toward Europe’s battlefields. The last time that happened things didn’t go well for Germany. Adm. Wilhelm Canaris, chief of the Abwehr — the German military intelligence — recalled how two German agents were able to infiltrate and blow up a munitions depot in New York Harbor, Black Tom Island, in 1916. In addition to the damage of the explosion, which was considerable, the sabotage had a disproportionately high value by getting Americans eyeing one another with suspicion. For example, Irish emigrants and Irish-Americans with real or suspected ties to the Irish Republicans and worker unionism were suspected in and investigated for the massive act of terrorism. Something else Canaris was almost certainly banking on — what we’d now call self-radicalization, lone-wolf terrorism. The admiral was well aware of the existence of the German-American Bund, a thin-
ly-veiled American Nazi organization that openly operated with a fair amount of recruitment, propaganda and suppression success in the 1930s. A combination of embezzlement and growing anti-Nazi sentiment crippled the organization. America’s declaration of war on Germany swept it aside completely. Or pushed it totally underground. It was reasonable for Canaris to think the latter. It was reasonable for him to think attacks on military production would urge underground Nazis and sympathizers in the U.S. to plan and carry out their own acts of terrorism. After all, there were already explosions that reeked of being homegrown Nazi sabotage in the United States, such as a huge one at a power plant in Kenvil, N.J., on Sept. 12, 1940.
The saboteurs Canaris found eight Germans who’d lived in the United
States at some time. Two of them were actually still legally naturalized American citizens. Only two were already serving in the German military. The others were civilians, although some had military experience. The eight were taken to Quenzsee Lake, near Berlin, for an intensive training program for making bombs and understanding factories to know where to place them for maximum damage. Additionally, the men spent their time developing new American identities, reading and listening to anything recently published or broadcasted in the U.S. to better understand the current culture, and brushing up on their vernacular English to sound right. They were taken to occupied France and split into two teams of four each. One team got on U-202 on May 26, 1942. The other team boarded U-584 two days later. The first team debarked for the Long Island beach on June 13. The second

approach 250,000 – 300,000 Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
This is the 75th anniversary of Japan’s surrender marking the end of World War II. On Aug. 15, 1945, Emperor Hirohito went on the radio to tell his country the fight was over. Come Sept. 2 that year, Japanese officials were on the deck of the USS Missouri signing surrender documents. By then an estimated 16 million Americans served in uniform to fight and win that war. About 405,000 died while serving in support of operations related to the war. The survivors came home, went to school, got jobs, raised families, and retired — most long ago. The youngest surviving World War II veterans are 93. “As you know, that population is going to decrease every day due to age,” said Steve Murray, spokesman for the Florida Department of Veteran Affairs. Unfortunately, on this important anniversary there won’t be any V-J Day parades or fanfare. They’re in a particularly vulnerable population to SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19. “A lot of people are having to stay at home,” Murray said.
“Normally we’d be doing outreach and celebratory things.” But, how many World War II veterans are there in the Sunshine State? “Our best guess is about 40,000,” Murray said. Best guess, because there’s no national registry of World War II veterans. The decennial census won’t catch that information, because the U.S. Census Bureau doesn’t ask.
The Florida World War II Memorial is by the R. A. Gray Building, 500 South Bronough St., Tallahassee. The Memorial features a passageway lined with plaques placed by the state’s 67 counties honoring local heroes. The state won’t host any commemorations marking the 75th anniversary of V-J Day, due to the ongoing pandemic.
Best guess What’s pretty certain is the national population of surviving World War II veterans likely fell below 500,000 in 2018. An estimated 60,000 lived in Florida that year. In 2018 the Department of Veteran Affairs and Census Bureau estimated that about 350 World War II veterans died daily. The nation dropped below 1 million surviving World War II veterans somewhere in 20142015. The Pew Research Center released a report in May estimating the current national population of World War II veterans is about 300,000. It estimated that from 2019 to 2020 about 245 World War II veterans died daily. The center noted the estimate didn’t take

COVID-19 into account. No one can be certain how much the pandemic has accelerated the daily death count, but there have been outbreaks of COVID-19 among the country’s about 160 state veterans’ nursing homes, which undoubtedly included numerous World War II veterans. Pew reported that California
and Florida have the largest populations of World War II veterans — each having more than 30,000. The National World War II Museum, New Orleans, is less optimistic. It estimates that by the end of 2020 there’ll be

Big win for the Everglades To the Editor: Last week Congress passed the bipartisan Great American Outdoors Act to support our national parks – including the Everglades – and make funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) permanent. This is a huge deal because the LWCF has made critical investments over the last 50 years to support Florida’s $58 billion recreation industry, protecting more than 485,000 jobs across the state. This program is also instrumental in our fight to protect our waterways and restore the Everglades because it will directly

House veterans subcommittee examines COVID-19 deaths Key question: Who’s got the oversight? Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE
pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com
The House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Health asked, “Who’s in Charge? Examining Oversight of State Veterans Homes During the COVID-19 Pandemic.” That was a hearing it hosted on July 29. Some state veterans’ nursing homes have had massive numbers of deaths. For example, the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home in New Jersey had 76 veterans die from COVID-19. The Paramus Veterans Memorial Home, also in New Jersey, had 81 veterans die. The subcommittee chairwoman, California Democrat Julia Brownley, lamented that no one can say for sure how many veterans in the about 160 state homes across America have died from COVID-19. “That’s because not all state veterans’ homes are required to report COVID-19 infection and mortality data to the (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) or (Department of Veteran Affairs),” she said. Which is something she’d like changed.
Florida The subcommittee’s ranking member is Florida Rep. Dr. Neal Dunn. He said the apparent disparity among states in controlling COVID-19 out-

breaks at veterans’ nursing homes seems to come down to one factor. “I strongly suspect that success in containing (SARSCoV-2) and future viruses is highly dependent on a more robust and innovative approaches to testing,” he said. Dunn represents the Big Bend and part of the Panhandle area, so has two Florida state veterans’ nursing homes in his district. The Florida Department of Veteran Affairs, which runs the state’s seven homes, has had a COVID-19 outbreak that could have easily escalated far beyond its 14
deaths. That was at the Alexander “Sandy” Nininger State Veterans’ Nursing Home in Pembroke Pines. Steve Murray, spokesman for the state veterans’ department, said all mourn the loss of any veteran, but there’s a context to consider those 14 deaths. “The Pembroke Pines home is actually now a good news story,” he said. Murray later continued, “The deaths stopped several weeks ago. Now there are no positive cases of COVID-19 at that home. We’ve welcomed back into that home 30 residents who were (previously) COVID-19 positive.” In addition to the 14 deaths at the Broward County home — which started early in the pandemic — there have been 10 COVID-19 resident deaths between two other Florida facilities. One state veterans’ nursing home worker has also died from COVID-19. Murray said success in managing COVID-19 has been the state veterans’ department’s aggressive screening and testing of residents and staff members. “Test, isolate, adapt, test some more,” Murray said.
Nationally Melissa Jackson, president of the National Association of State Veterans Homes and the CEO of the Vermont Veterans’ Home, said while there have been tragic outbreaks
of SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 at state veterans’ homes, most have done well at keeping residents safe. “When COVID-19 began to spread, state veterans’ homes were among the first institutions to take precautions to protect our residents,” she told the subcommittee. She added, “State veterans’ homes started screening staff and residents for COVID-19 symptoms; however, as we’ve learned since, the significant level of asymptomatic spread of the virus made it almost impossible to keep the virus our of any facility or location in the country.” She added that many state veterans’ homes are stuck clawing for personal protective equipment in an unexpected drought market, and some states have had problems maintaining good supplies of tests for their homes. Murray said getting adequate supplies of tests has not been an issue for Florida. At press time, July 30, The VA is reporting there’ve been a cumulative number of about 40,000 cases of COVID-19 related to its medical facilities. That census is almost all veterans, but does include workers and others. There’ve been about 2,100 deaths. The numbers are most likely representative of mid-July. Veteran Voice has compared the VA’s and others’ reporting and noticed the likely lag in the VA’s reporting.

In spite of pandemic, organization gives veteran’s home much needed repairs Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER
mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com
“The words ‘homeless’ and ‘veteran’ should never be used in the same sentence.” This is the motto of House A Vet, Stuart, whose mission may have slowed down during the pandemic, but has not stopped. The organization doesn’t just provide housing for homeless veterans, but also repairs and upgrades veterans’ existing homes, which is just what they did July 25. The home of Harold E. (last name omitted for privacy) badly needed outside fixing and painting, as did his floors and stove. After meeting up at House A Vet’s premises at 490 SE Monterey Road, Stuart, the volunteer group headed out to Harold E.’s home and got straight to work. Along with tightening up holes and gaps in the siding, the volunteers did roof repairs and repairs to the underpinning support of the home. Additionally, they applied a fresh coat of paint to spruce up the home’s appearance. Inside, they performed much needed floor repairs, and replaced the stove’s range hood. In the scheme of things, veterans like Harold E. don’t need to be given luxury accommodations. Repairs to their beloved home make an enormous difference, as House A Vet knew when they took the project on. It all helped make sure Harold E. will be snug and secure for quite some time to come.

the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s not a large organization, so it tends to be overshadowed, funding- and volunteer-wise, by larger organizations like the American Legion and VFW. Still, they “soldier” on, helping wherever they can — one veteran at a time. House A Vet also operates a Food Pantry for needy veterans. It was here that they discovered client Harold E.’s home situation, according to Chris Seifert, office manager and volunteer. Harold E. is a Korean Warera to pre-Vietnam War veteran of the Army Corps of Engineers. He had a longtime girlfriend, who passed away, so he lives alone. He has been in his home for more than 20 years. According to House A Vet Director Kevin Donahue, Harold E. hired a neighbor to do repairs. The neighbor started the work, but never finished it. Donahue and House A Vet didn’t think twice before jump-
ing in to do the job.
Pandemic poses large problems There is no doubt that veterans’ organizations are feeling a massive fund-raising pinch from the COVID-19 situation. Many large organizations have lost their bar and grill revenue, and the State of Florida’s guidelines on reopening seem to change from week to week. All organizations, whether large or smaller like House A Vet, have lost the ability to do their regular fund-raising activities as well. Donahue says House A Vet’s “funds are depleted” since the first of March. Volunteers, as well, are thinner on the ground, whether due to health concerns or social-distancing concerns. The pandemic has hit the brakes hard. “We haven’t been able to do
any projects up till now,” Donahue said, referring to Harold E.’s work. “But we have another project scheduled to help a Navy veteran coming up in August.”
How you can help — today! House A Vet refuses to quit. The funds are in dire straits, but Donahue says “we will continue our mission right up until the money runs out.” It doesn’t need to break the bank to help House A Vet continue helping veterans — “If everyone donated just $1, that would take us a long way,” Donahue said. Go to houseavet.org, and click on the “donate” button. It only takes a few minutes, but makes a huge difference in the life of one of your neighbor veterans. And if you’re able and willing, House A Vet welcomes

from page 2 debarked at Ponte Vedra on June 17. The leader of the Florida group was Edward “Eddie” Kerling, who’d lived in this state at some point of his previous stay in the country. He was also a member of the German-American Bund, so was likely going to make contact with former associates. After burying supplies the Florida team headed on foot to Jacksonville, and split up on trains heading to Illinois and New York. What they didn’t know is the feds were already getting onto them. The Long Island group were caught by Coast Guardsman John Cullen, who was patrolling the beach unarmed. One of the Nazi infiltrators, Dasch, offered Cullen a $260 bribe if he’d walk away. Cullen accepted. Rather, Cullen had the good sense to play along and take the money and trek back to the Amagansett Coast Guard station to raise the alarm that something was amiss. Turns out Dasch was most likely saving Cullen’s life, and starting a plan to foil Operation Pastorius. He’d reportedly instructed Cullen to take a good look at him and remember his face.
George Dasch Dasch was born in Speyer, Germany, and served in the Imperial German Army in World War I. He apparently lied about his age. He also apparently emigrated to the United States illegally in the early 1920s.
Stability is one thing Dasch never seemed to get a lot of. Records indicate he bounced all over the U.S. working a number of different jobs, including waiting tables at a Miami Beach hotel. He’d married at least twice in this country. Soldiering was among the jobs he did. Dasch joined the Army and served in the upstart Air Corps in the late 1920s. Dasch got himself honorably discharged after about a year. But he reenlisted in 1936 and joined an infantry unit. He left the Army again after about two years, and after that headed for Germany. Honestly, stability wasn’t one of his strengths, and it makes for conflicting historical accounts on granular details. But the overarching sweep is he got to the U.S. in the early 1920s, bounced like a pinball between jobs, women and states for about 18 years, then headed back to Germany, apparently at his mother’s urging. What’s also apparent from the historical record is he disliked the Nazis, but worked for them in a minor capacity translating radio broadcasts for the Abwehr. He seems to have done that to keep himself out of the German military. Still, that’s how he seems to have come to the Abwehr’s attention for recruitment into Operation Pastorius.
The betrayal The eight saboteurs were now in the United States with plans to meet on July 4 in Ohio to coordinate plans for attacks. Dasch’s New York landing team split up in two. He went to a Manhattan hotel with Ernst Burger, who happened to still legally be a naturalized U.S. citizen.
Dasch told Burger he planned to contact authorities and foil the terrorist operation. Burger agreed wholeheartedly. Turned out Burger was a disillusioned Nazi who’d done time in a concentration camp after writing criticisms about the Gestapo. He was cooking up his own betrayal plans before Dasch approached him. On June 15, ‘42, Dasch phoned the FBI in New York. The agent he talked to apparently didn’t buy the whole story about U-boats, Nazi infiltrators and planned sabotage. A couple days later Dasch got on a train for Washington, D.C. He was on that train as the Florida team was landing. The next day Dasch called the federal government to turn himself in. He encountered a bureaucratic runaround instead. He finally convinced an FBI agent to talk to him in person. Dasch headed to the FBI office with a bag in hand. That agent ended up not believing the crazy story about U-boats, Nazi infiltrators and planned sabotage. And he wasn’t going to call the Coast Guard or New York FBI office to hunt up Dasch’s alleged witnesses. So Dasch dumped $84,000 on the table. That was money the Abwehr gave the team for meals, clothing, lodgings and, most of all, buying materials at hardware stores to build bombs. The FBI agent was now listening to Dasch. You see, in today’s money that was about $1.5 million. Dasch, who was adept at living under the radar in the U.S., was giving up a fortune to foil Operation Pastorius.
The arrests and trial Dasch spent eight days in intense interrogation. The FBI and military scrutinized Dasch’s U-boats, Nazi infiltrators and planned sabotage six ways to Sunday, ending up with a 300-page transcript. Burger was awaiting FBI agents back at a New York City hotel. They finally showed up. Using information provided by Burger and Dasch, the other six saboteurs were picked up by June 27. On July 2, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued an executive order that allowed a military tribunal to try the men. The trial was July 8 to Aug. 1. Dasch and Burger, both of whom had families in Germany, were tried along with the other six. That was a plan to help keep their families in Germany safe. On Aug. 3 the two got the death penalty along with the others. On Aug. 8 the Nazi terrorists were executed. All except for Burger and Dasch. Roosevelt commuted their sentences to life and 30 years respectively. In 1948 President Harry S. Truman granted both men clemency on the condition they return to and stay in Germany. Dasch — the unlikeliest of American World War II heroes who doubtlessly saved a lot of lives — died in 1992 in Ludwigshafen, Germany.

MOAACC’s GDF Presents Florida Tech with $1,000 for Obstacle Course Maintenance Marilyn Sanford MOAACC
The Military Officers Association of America Cape Canaveral Chapter (MOAACC) presented a $1,000 check to the Florida Institute of Technology for maintenance on the Air Assault Obstacle Course on July 22. The check was from MOAACC’s Good Deeds Foundation (GDF). The Air Assault Obstacle Course is part of Florida Tech’s Challenge Course Complex located in Fellsmere. The complex is a unique asset among colleges across the nation and provides a variety of military specification courses, including not only the Air Assault Course, but a Leadership Reaction Course, Marine Course, High Rope Course, and a Small Unit Tactics “Airsoft” Course. Florida Tech’s ROTC has priority for use of the courses, but it is also used by area high school JROTC programs, and units from Patrick AFB and the Coast Guard.
Other organizations such as Scouts, corporations, and even Olympic athletes, have used the facility in the past for a small fee, which serves to defray operating and maintenance costs. The Air Assault Course and other courses are used to build leadership skills and confidence, as well as prepare Florida Tech ROTC cadets for Air Assault School. Due to COVID-19, course usage is currently down, and that means revenue for upkeep and maintenance is also down. Dave Beach, the Assistant Director for Florida Tech’s Outdoor Operations, thanked MOAACC for the generous donation, stating it will go a long way to offset costs incurred due to the COVID-19 situation. MOAACC is leading an effort to organize other service/veteran organizations and corporations in the community to ensure this unique asset remains available for use by the area’s aspiring military officers, military students and military units.

Contract marries military, commercial technologies Street Smarts VR, whose virtual reality (VR) training platform is used across U.S. military and law enforcement organizations, announced a contract with U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) Security Forces that deepens their commitment to maximizing readiness for Airmen through more realistic training. The contract, secured under the AFWERX Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program, supports the adoption of innovative commercial technologies for military use. With the initiative, Street Smarts VR (SSVR) will adapt training scenarios to the requirements of AFGSC Security Forces, to be delivered via a VR training system secured under an existing contract. AFGSC Security Forces have a mission set that is unique and distinct from other Security Force units – namely the protection and defense of the nation’s nuclear missiles and bombers. The Air Force Global Strike Command provides strategic deterrence, global strike, and combat support.
Operation Gratitude, Red Cross team up for ‘Xmas in July’ Operation Gratitude and the American Red Cross joined forces to bring Christmas in July, with the delivery of care packages to more than 10,000 deployed troops serving in the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. The first shipment of care packages marks the beginning of a promising relationship between the two non-profits, and the launch of a partnership that will achieve greater impact by combining efforts to provide comfort, entertainment and care items to thousands of Service Members stationed overseas each year. Since its inception in March of 2003, when it sent its first four care packages to deployed service members in Iraq, Operation Gratitude has given millions of Americans the opportunity to express appreciation to deployed service members through hands-on volunteerism, and have lifted the spirits of more than 1.8 million deployed troops, and another 900,000 recruit graduates, veterans, military families, and first responders. Corporate partners and grateful citizens from across the country donate more than 10 million “Wish List” and handmade items each year to fill care packages.

Carriers conduct strike maneuvers with Greek flyers Naval aircraft from Carrier Air Wing Three (CVW-3) conducted day and night precision-guided munition and live ordnance strikes on the Greek Karavia Range in the Mediterranean Sea, July 25-26. In addition to the expenditure of unguided and guided rockets, laser training rounds, and other ordnance on the Karavia Range, CVW-3 participated in air-to-air combat maneuvers and tactical training with Hellenic Navy F-16s. The training opportunity allowed pilots to gain tactical proficiency and remain engaged, postured, and ready with credible force to assure our NATO Allies and partners, deter our adversaries, and defend U.S. national security interests in an increasingly complex security environment.
Space Force STAR command stood up to prep for streamlining The U.S. Space Force stood up a provisional Space Training and Readiness command at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo., during a pre-recorded virtual ceremony last week. The stand-up of STAR Delta Provisional is a critical step to building a lean, agile and future-focused Space Force. The Delta will be led by Col. Pete Flores and will serve as the parent organization for a number of education, training, test and evaluation units for the Space Force. “Today we take action, an important and significant step, towards the development of a 21st century service purpose-built to achieve speed, agility and unity of effort,” said Chief of Space Operations Gen. John “Jay” Raymond in the video. “This ceremony highlights the most significant restructure of space units since the establishment of the Air Force Space Command in 1982.” STAR Delta Provisional will serve as the precursor organization to the eventual Space Training and Readiness Command field command, or STARCOM. STARCOM will build lethality by developing combat-ready space forces and space warfighting capabilities in order to innovate and dominate in all domains – air, land, sea, space, and cyberspace.

Who is that masked lady? DOD civilian crafts, donates free cloth masks to fight COVID-19 George A. Smith
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE
When Defense Secretary Dr. Mark T. Esper directed Defense Department personnel to wear cloth face coverings when they can’t maintain 6 feet of social distance at work, Defense Media Activity employees in Riverside, Calif., were already wearing them. That’s because a big-hearted woman with extraordinary sewing skills took the initiative to make them. Broadcast journalist Rolla Suttmiller sewed 160 cloth masks in a few days for her comrades, friends and neighbors at no cost to them. She started making them when Riverside County mandated that all essential service workers wear a cloth face covering as a COVID-19 preventive measure. ‘’I wanted to do it to protect myself at first,’’ Suttmiller said. ‘’Then, I got a call from someone from work with an urgent request for masks for
DOD Photo Rolla Suttmiller, a broadcast journalist for the American Forces Network Broadcast Center, made cloth masks for her coworkers in Riverside, Calif., who are working 24/7 through the COVID-19 pandemic. Suttmiller volunteered her sewing skills, material and time to make 160 masks.
people in the building. ‘’I made 31 in four hours and brought them over the same day.’’
Suttmiller has been sewing since she was 12, does crafts all the time, and belongs to a multitude of sewing and crafts groups. ‘’I compiled a bit from all of them and did my own design with three layers,’’ she explained. ‘’If you go to the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] website, you’ll see they recommend a highweave cotton. You want that for breathability. But there are still tiny little holes in it. What I did is I have the decorative outer layer, a white layer that touches your face, and a middle layer called interfacing. It’s made of something denser that doesn’t let light transfer through.’’ She decided to sew scores of masks because of three factors. ‘’I have thousands of pounds of fabric on hand, I have the skill, and, three, it would be immoral of me to not to put the two of these together and make them for people,’’ she said. Suttmiller sews compassion into every mask she stitches.
‘’Those custom-made masks, made with such attention to detail with an assembly line of just her, are spectacular,’’ coworker Roy Mason said. Jordana Jacobs, a television master-control supervisor, laughed and said, ‘’She’s really got those Suzy Homemaker skills down … and I love the design!’’ Suttmiller is continuing to make masks, already fielding improved versions with a narrow elastic band. One version has elastic loops that go over the ears, and another type ties behind the head. While Suttmiller crafts face masks for teammates, she also continues to serve the overseas military, DOD civilians, and their family members. Suttmiller is a senior editor, creating quality television messages that inform viewers what’s airing when on American Forces Network Television. AFN serves Americans serving in 168 different countries and territories and 200 Navy ships around the world.
