TO NEW BEGINNINGS

W

elcome to the inaugural issue of VETTA Homes. Sure, it was another hellish endeavor of blood, sweat and tears; and once again, expectations and time crunches were incredibly disparate… and, yes, it was my third ‘birth’ in a year… but it was so worth it. After the humbling response Austin had to VETTA Magazine – particularly our Interiors Issue – we had no choice but to create a new venue to highlight this city’s amazing talents and convey its unique passion for design. Perfectly complementing your new favorite luxury lifestyle magazine, this spinoff visits the homes of interesting characters in and out of Austin to set a new standard in good taste. Color, texture, furnishings, materials, natural elements and even context are all distinctive traits that define the composition of the home. Join us in our exploration and pursuit of la crème de la crème.

Moreover, VETTA Homes not only celebrates the coolest properties and concepts of ATX, it also marks the beginning of another amazing year for this thriving southern gem. Hence, we appropriately chose the theme of the Future for our first issue, not just in honor of my favorite style in architecture and design (or in anticipation of the Modern Home Tour), but because we are an active part of the wave of change and innovation that’s sweeping Austin’s media. Toning the cheesiness back down a couple of notches, we are proud to stand at the threshold of urban renovation. During this time of transition, VETTA Homes will feature and support initiatives of positive change and transformation for the homes of this great city. It’s a joy for this editor to feature noteworthy locals as well as global trends that will surely find their way into the finest homes in Central Texas. These notions of modernity and progress are beautifully showcased with the sleek aesthetics, breathtaking design and alternative building concepts that are starting to germinate throughout local design studios. Hsu, Fajkus, Cuppett, Sampley, LaRue, Pfeiffer, Clark and all our friends in modern design, we salute you and we praise your vision. From ambitious residential endeavors to hip eateries and commercial works, old and new generations are meeting at the junction of wonderful, intelligent design. In sum, this issue is not just about futuristic gadgets and sustainability. It’s not about cold, stark buildings and abstract art. It’s an ode to bigger, better and groundbreaking things to come. We can’t wait for the next chapter in our saga. Always aiming for the top,

HIGH POINT MARKET TRENDS RAW AND BEAUTIFUL

As stated by style spotter and design muse Jeanne Chung, the Revival of the ‘Brutalist’ Movement was a strong trend at HP this past October. “Characterized by repeated modular elements, angular features and intentionally rough, unfinished surfaces, this raw and unrefined aesthetic made its influence felt throughout Market. I found it featured most prominently in fashion-forward lighting but also in furniture and wall art statement pieces,” added Chung in their Fall Style Report. We found this trend especially interesting because it focuses on the object and not as much in its style contents. As the design expert stated, “these pieces are meant as an expression of material, an effort to embrace the imperfect and to show an appreciation for handmade craft.”

THOUSANDS OF DESIGNERS, BUYERS AND CONSUMERS GATHERED FOR THE RENOWNED INTERNATIONAL EVENT, TO WITNESS AN INCREDIBLE MIX OF UNIQUE ITEMS AND GORGEOUS DESIGN TRENDS. HERE ARE OUR FAVORITES...

PATTERNS GALORE

This Fall’s Market served as an amazing opportunity for the reemergence of color and prints. “After years of beige, it was revitalizing to see vibrant colors and patterns recapturing the imagination of designers,” declared Gary Inman, award-winning luxury interior designer and writer. There was an impressive display of marbleized cottons, florals, stripes, Ikats, paisleys, fretwork and lattice, as well as some painterly graphics. As Inman explained, some were, “over-scaled for drama but all with a celebratory complexity.” Upholstery was wild this year with animal prints, vintage textiles, and architectural ornamentation and even lighting received the graphic treatment.

CRAFT MEETS LUXE

As global trends have continued to gain ground in the design realm, we’ve seen strong statements with the use of Ikat, Kilims and heavy embellishment the last couple of years throughout Market. As Meredith Heron - TV host, designer and color connoisseur – explained, “hand-crafted, one of a kind pieces are much sought after, and mixing these pieces into existing decor or using them to vamp up more conservative spaces is most certainly a 2015 trend.”

DWELL ON DESIGN: INTELLIGENCE FROM THE MODERN WORLD

THE BIGGEST DESIGN EVENT IN THE US MAKES THE BIG APPLE A LITTLE BIT COOLER.

Photos by Jenna Bascom.

32 VETTAHOMES.COM

T

his past October 9th-11th, Dwell On Design hosted their first New York City event making them an official coast-to-coast festival of modern design. Dwell On Design New York (DODNY) brought together commercial designers, architects, landscapers, manufacturers and attendees to share ideas and discuss the latest industry-wide developments and the future of design. Roughly 5,000 design savvy individuals took part in this successful 3-day (2-day trade and 1-day public consumer) design summit that occurred during AIANY’s Archtober (a month-long architecture and design festival). Highlights included twenty largescale installations, a Dwell Home Tour showcasing the most innovative, designforward dwellings in Manhattan and onstage editor-led discussions on trends such as: learning spaces, hospitality venues, transit, public spaces and urban infrastructure. Big name brands such as Volvo Cars of North America, Marvin Windows and Doors, IKEA, Marimekko, Raydoor, Resource Furniture, WeWork and Blu Homes exhibited innovative and interactive installations. Experts spoke about topics like: “Healthy Architecture,” “The New Malleable Office,” “Re-imagining New York City’s Terra Firma,” Architecture for Humanity’s “Design Like You Give a Damn: LIVE!,” “Preservation Nation” and the “Architecture of Loss.”

“WITH INSTALLATIONS FROM 18 WORLD-CLASS BRANDS, THE FIRST DWELL ON DESIGN NY WAS A RESOUNDING SUCCESS.”

“One of our esteemed presenters commented that the discussion areas were like blogs, because blogs are like conversations — very approachable. I just love that, it means we were successful,” said Dwell President and CEO Michela O’Connor Abrams. “The impetus for Dwell on Design NY was to continue conversations about important topics like resiliency, innovation, transit and public spaces and to do it in a way that was approachable and created opportunities for discussion. Together with installations from 18 world-class brands, the first Dwell on Design NY was a resounding success.” The show wrapped up with a celebration and presentation of the second annual Dwell Vision Award sponsored by Volvo

Cars of North America. Architecture for Humanity won the award for their 15 years of humanitarian service, innovation within the design community and vision for the future. The festivities began with a wine tasting from Chapter 24 Vineyards and concluded with a live auction featuring five items that included once in a lifetime curated trips to Sweden, Dwell on Design LA, Charley Harper’s home and studio in Cincinnati, OH, architect Louis Kahn’s final residential commission in Pennsylvania and Raydoor sliding doors designed by graffiti artist George “SEN-One” Murillo. The auction and evening benefited Architecture for Humanity and raised thousands of dollars for the organization. “Receiving the Dwell Vision Award on behalf of Architecture for Humanity was an

amazing honor, as was being able to partner with Dwell Media on this amazing event,” remarked Executive Director Eric Cesal. “Dwell on Design celebrates all the ways in which design improves lives — an ideal for which Architecture for Humanity has stood all along.” Dwell On Design New York serves to, “bring people together to evaluate design, solve problems and innovate through research, technology and ingenuity.” If you missed DODNY’s October 2014 debut event, don’t fret; you can plan for this year’s summit. YOU’RE WELCOME

The Austin Modern Home Tour is Back!

F

rom Westlake Hills to Austin’s East Side, from Bouldin to Rollingwood, from Zilker to Rosedale, the Modern Home Tour Austin has been entertaining modern residential architecture enthusiasts with private home viewings since 2008. “When we started, it was a bad year for architects,” said curator Ingrid Spencer. “Projects were being stalled or derailed completely. The tour was a great way to give creators of architecturally significant modern homes some well-needed attention and exposure.” Spencer noted that today’s stronger economy and a growing interest in modern architecture has changed some of the thinking behind the tour, but only added to the intent. “Tour founder Krisstina Wise wants Austinites to understand the benefits and beauty of modern residential architecture, and I want to help people understand how modern techniques have been applied to Austin’s neighborhoods and adapted to meet the challenges of our Texas climate.” Now in its eighth year, the 2015 tour, scheduled for February 7th, will take things a few steps forward, showcasing a “healthy” house in the Zilker neighborhood designed by architect Gordon Wittenberg. “Green building is something we now all understand,” said Spencer, “but ‘healthy’ building is a concept and philosophy that is not well known. This house exemplifies the ideas behind a healthy house in a beautifully modern way.” Other properties on the tour include houses by architects and firms Allen Bianchi, Michael Hsu, Baldridge Architects and Sago International. There will also be several modern builder-led houses featured. “Each of the builders worked with architects to create thoughtful designs that express modern and contemporary philosophies, as well as green principles,” said Spencer. “It’s going to be a unique and enjoyable event,” chimed tour producer and Modern Home Tours, LLC principal James Leasure. “The range of houses, from small to large and modest to grand, all with a modern sensibility at heart, means there will be something to interest everyone.” The following homes provide a small taste of what will be including on the tour.

Filmmaker Gary Lankford and his photographer wife Sandy were weary of traveling back and forth to New York and Los Angeles. The Lankfords have family ties to Austin and couldn’t wait to stay in one place for a while. They bought a swath of hillside in Westlake and brought in Houston-based architect Allen Bianchi to design them a modern live/work base camp. With Sandy’s builder brother as contractor, Bianchi designed the couple a 4,000-square-foot house complete with film studio, screening room, public and private living spaces and outdoor spaces that would keep them from ever missing their California lifestyle. The view came along with the location, which also offered some geological benefits. “I designed the house to follow the contours of the hill,” said Bianchi. “And because the hill is rock, we could easily anchor the house. That was a nice surprise for me. I’m used to flat Houston, which has mostly clay that requires you to drill down deep until you find something solid to anchor a foundation.” The house, with its overhangs and views of the city, reminds the Lankfords of Laurel Canyon where they used to live near Los Angeles. “But we’re in Austin,” said Gary Lankford, “and we’re so glad.”

Next door to the Lankfords was another site with views, so Sandy’s builder brother built a spec house also designed by Allen Bianchi. The designers left the house somewhat raw inside so that a buyer could customize it to their needs and taste, which is exactly what happened. “Allen Bianchi did an amazing job on the shell of the house,” said local architect Jay Corder who was brought in by the new owners. “He had the vision for the shell, and I tailored the interiors to suit the homeowners, redesigning the kitchen, bathrooms, fireplace, the entry and stairs and adding an elevator.” The house now suits its owners perfectly, with clean lines and a simple palette that includes a wood-paneled wall in the main living space and a long linear fireplace.

THE DAWN OF THE HEALTHY HOUSE 1501 HILLMONT ST.

36 VETTAHOMES.COM

The very private designer, builder and homeowner of this 6,400-square-foot house was hugely influenced by the work of Alan Taniguchi, late architect and dean of the UT School of Architecture in the late 60s and early 70s. He worked with Taniguchi on a number of houses, and the late architect’s influence is clear in the airy and expansive spaces in this house where high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows flood interior spaces with natural light. Clean lines and right angles abound, framing hillside views.

“Our house made us sick,” said entrepreneur Adam Reiser about the house that used to be on the site of 150 Hillmont Street, in Austin’s Zilker neighborhood. After much testing, questioning and research, Reiser discovered that a dangerous mycotoxin mold called tricothecene was in his house. This toxic black mold, which Reiser found came from a leak in his HVAC unit, literally changed his life. “My family and I were being poisoned,” said Reiser. “When we found that our house was not a candidate for remediation, it took me down a path where I wanted not only to have a healthy house designed and built, but I wanted to share what I learned.” Reiser brought his friend Gordon Wittenberg (who happens to be the director of graduate studies for Rice University’s School of Architecture) to the project and secured a partnership with Treehouse Home Improvement Store (who is also sponsoring the Modern Home Tour Austin). The resulting 2,000-square-foot house is, “one hundred percent toxin-free,” according to Reiser. Constructed of insulated concrete form (ICF) blocks, the three-story house can breathe, which will prevent mold from growing. Clad with lime stucco and a rainscreen made of hardwood from recycled palettes, the house also contains magnesium oxide boards instead of sheet rock and is heated and cooled with eight mini-split air conditioners so that all spaces can be individually controlled. “The ICF blocks have a thick thermal mass,” said Reiser. “So, they hold heat and cold very well. Hopefully we won’t be needing to condition the house much.” Reiser is excited to spread his message of healthy house building and is even starting a building company called Shelter Home Building to help others build their own healthy house in an affordable way. “Green building is not healthy building, although they are related,” he said. “Houses are not inert, benign things. My house tells a story. I want others to know about it, because this is not on people’s radar and it’s not their fault.”

BUILDERS MAKE MODERN For the past several years, Austin’s builder community has stepped up to the unadorned plate of modern residential, serving to lead projects in multiple neighborhoods. Working with architects to realize their ideas, these houses are cropping up in a variety of sizes and price points. On February 7th, Austinites can walk through the following builder-led modern houses as part of the Modern Home Tour Austin.

TURNER RESIDENTIAL 2010 GOODRICH AVE. #2A

NEWCASTLE HOMES 1601 MAPLE

It’s hard to believe Scott Turner found over two acres in the Zilker neighborhood to build on, but he did. With the help of architect Doug Frey, he’s creating the four-star Austin Green Building rated Copeland Court featuring 18 houses, which are a mix of duplex units, detached homes and 850-square-foot bungalows. The 1,850-square-foot duplex unit on the tour features 3 bedrooms and 3 baths on two floors. A modern take on a house with a peaked roof, finishes are simple and elegant with polished concrete floors, white quartz countertops and a commercial storefront glass entry. “We have found that buyers in the urban neighborhoods where we build prefer the clean lines and thoughtful design of modern homes,” said Turner. “In addition, because Austin’s “McMansion” ordinance limits the size and shape of a home on an urban lot, the efficiency of modern design provides both a functional and aesthetic benefit. Plus, they look cool.” Designed by architect Francois Levy of Levy-Kohlhaas Architecture in conjunction with the homeowner and Newcastle Homes, this house on Austin’s East Side was designed to maximize the site, meet the requirements of a challenging budget and create indoor/ outdoor connections. A unique pass-through garage with access on both sides doubles as a workshop or entertaining space. A movable glass wall system fosters indoor/outdoor connections between the open living room, the garage and a landscaped courtyard. Another movable wall in the master bedroom opens to a separate, private exterior space. Each of the houses on the Modern Home Tour has its own story to tell. Come learn them all on Saturday, February 7th! For tickets and information go to: modernhometours.com.

GUEST EDITOR: WINN WITTMAN

W

inn Wittman is one of Austin’s most wellrespected architects, man about town and founder of Winn Wittman Architecture. His designs range from the 2,600 square foot mid-centuryinfluenced Ravine House, featured in this issue, to the highly-sculptural $15 million-dollar Manta Haus, currently under construction in Westlake Hills. Other current projects include a home with a rooftop glass swimming pool for a local high-tech executive, a New American Cuisine restaurant for chef David Garrido and a downtown boutique hotel. Last year, the Discovery Network produced a show featuring a Wittman-designed tennis court which cantilevers 80 feet above Lake Travis, and director Terrence Malick set a major motion picture in two of Wittman’s homes starring Christian Bale, Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender, due out in 2015. Winn’s work can be seen at: winnwittman.com. Here are some of Winn Wittman’s latest high-tech picks for the home:

FANTINI My favorite faucets these days are from Fantini, because they are so classic and minimal that they’ll never look dated. The brand offers both manually operated and touchactivated options. Fantini faucets can be found in Austin at Alexander Marchant: alexandermarchant.com. AVANT GALLERY The use of LED lighting within objects in the home is a popular trend. Here’s a lighted sink we used in a recent powder bath design. Available from Avant Gallery in Miami: avantgallery.com.

BOARD+DAHLIA High-tech to me is an attitude and an aesthetic. This bookcase is a great example of a high-tech look. Made by Board + Dahlia, we found this unique piece at Lytle Pressley Contemporary, Austin Texas: lytlepressley.com.

EAGLE’S NEST ARTISTRY Sometimes when you have lots of high-tech items in a home, you need some good old lowtech pieces to create a balance. Austin artisan Bryan AllenAguilar’s work really expresses the natural beauty of wood — flaws and all. Here, he fills in the cracks with crushed turquoise. eaglesnestartistry.com.

PLANIKA When we incorporate fireplaces into our projects these days, and we generally use alcohol-burning units. Wall-mounted or free-standing units from Planika are eco-friendly, smoke and residue-free and can be controlled through a digital touch pad or home automation system. We source ours from Urbanspace Interiors in Austin: urbanspaceinteriors.com.

“Instead of practicing architecture in the traditional sense, I consider myself an artist whose primary medium happens to be architecture. I seek to create unique works of art that are also highly functional, sustainable and uplifting. My inspiration comes less from the built world and more from the essential qualities of the clients and organizations I am working with.” — Winn Wittman

SAVANT The integration of tablets and phones into the automation of homes has been a trend for several years. But the sophistication of these devices is now at a whole new level. RUST RAPTURE ABSTRACT ART + HOT RODS

RUST RAPTURE FEATURES IMAGES OF “HOT ROD” AND “RAT ROD” CARS THAT HAVE SURVIVED 40 PLUS YEARS OF SUN, HEAT AND RAIN.

B

reathing new life into objects of the past, Johnny Stevens highlights rust from oneof-a-kind finished vintage cars in his latest project: Rust Rapture. The abstract artist with over 30 years of professional experience in painting, sketching, video and photography seeks to reveal unique perspectives of ordinary images while evoking a sense of mystery. Rust Rapture features images of “hot rod” and “rat rod” cars that have survived 40 plus years of sun, heat and rain. These harsh conditions create rust with gorgeous color patterns and textures with stunning explosions of movement and shape. Born from Stevens’ attendance to the Lonestar Rod and Kustom Car Round-up in Austin four years ago, dozens of vintage cars are depicted in his Rust Rapture collection ranging from a 1924 Ford Model T to a 1966 Chevy. Stevens’ inspiration for this series originated from the abstract pieces he painted while studying at Fleming College, an art institute in Florence, Italy. There, he learned to appreciate painting disrupted patterns while still honoring the balance in composition. However, over the course of his life, he has been most motivated by Salvador Dali’s surreal representations. The next showing of Rust Rapture will be early summer, July 1-29, at the O2 Gallery and Project Space at Flatbed Press. Stop by to see the playful works of this multi-faceted, commercial artist and respected member of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals, Professional Photographers of America, Texas PPA, Austin Guild PPA and Interior Designer Society.

YUN ANDYANG EXPLORING DUALITY OF EASTERN AND WESTERN CULTURES

“THERE IS SOMETHING VERY SOOTHING ABOUT EACH OF THEIR WORKS — QUIET BY WAY OF PRESENTATION, BUT VERY BOLD IN THE MESSAGE EACH PIECE COMMUNICATES.”

T

hree artists with Eastern roots blend ancient techniques with Western influences have come together to reveal a highly curated collection of art that goes deeper than the canvas. In Jeong-Choon Yun’s case, the canvas is actually bark from Dak trees in South Korea where the couple annually returns to gather the material and put it through a 2,000year old process of boiling, beating, cleaning, drying and ultimately creating tapestries that are organic and time honored. Rimi Yang’s artistic style also bridges the East and the West by incorporating ancient Japanese block print and 19th century portraiture as well as bold abstract color and energy. A beautifully balanced exhibit will be on display at the Russell Collection Fine Art gallery February 3-28, 2015 with a unique opportunity to witness the paper making process on Saturday, February 7th from noon–2 pm, followed by a completion of the art in a “Meet the Artists” reception from 6-9 pm with all three artists in attendance. “There is something very soothing about each of their works — quiet by way of presentation, but very bold in the message each piece communicates. It’s quite ethereal and art collectors will have a marvelous time viewing this exquisite collection,” said gallery owner Lisa Russell. The Yuns are a married couple, each of them educated in South Korea where they received BFA’s in Western Art from Kemyung University (Daegwoo). They pursued individual art careers — to great acclaim and recognition — in their homeland and abroad. When their two sons decided to come to the U.S. to further their studies, their parents also emigrated. Jeonghan received a second MFA at the Academy of Arts University in San Francisco with an emphasis in Printmaking. After determining several years ago that they offer differing sensibilities and visions, the Yuns made a monumental decision to pair up based on the idea that they could create works as a team differently than they did individually. They sign each unique work with both of their names and add in each of their thumbprints, which have been dipped into pigment, to signify their approval of every completed masterpiece.

Rimi Yang is an ethnic Korean who was raised in Osaka, Japan. She followed her passion for art and studied at California State University and the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art, and additionally the Otis College of Art and Design. She currently resides in Santa Monica, CA, but has traveled extensively to hone her skills and enrich her artistic reservoir. Collectors say her work is, “intensely emotional, unique and sophisticated.” She pulls iconic images from art history and deconstructs them, while cultivating new methods and techniques. This results in viewers being led on a mysterious journey into each piece — sometimes confusing, yet always captivating.”

A WORLD OF INSPIRATION THE WORKS OF BRITTANY LEE WHAT I WANT THE VIEWER TO TAKE FROM MY PIECES IS A FEELING. I WANT THE VIEWER TO BE ABLE TO HONESTLY CONNECT WITH MY PIECES, SMILE AND SAY ‘YES, I’VE HAVE FELT THAT!”

F

or your consideration, here is the breathtaking work of Brittany Lee. In a whirlwind of color and through exquisite textures, Lee has captured the hearts of Austin patrons. The Brittany is a self-taught abstract painter from Baton Rouge, Louisiana whose travels have been one of the greatest influences affecting her artwork. “Being able to see and experience new places, people, cultures and landscapes brings new vision and ideas to my compositions. Something as simple as a flower pot sitting outside an old door in the New Orleans French Quarter brings just as much life to my work as a mountaintop view overlooking one of the most beautiful cities in Thailand,” said Lee. Her works are bright and spontaneous, a reaction to emotions evoked throughout her process. “My compositions are very distinctive for their bold use of color and textured layers of acrylic paint and other mediums. Never do I have a plan or idea when I begin, I let the brush take over,” said Lee. “Upon completion, I feel as though the reason was there all along.” Lee paints to interact with her audience, to garner a response from them. “I create not to be seen but to be experienced, allowing the viewer to make an honest connection between my work and their own emotions,” noted the artist. “It is an outward expression of inward emotion that I create on canvas for the world to experience. What I want the viewer to take from my pieces is a feeling. I want the viewer to be able to honestly connect with my pieces, smile and say ‘YES, I’ve have felt that!” Austin has been receptive to her works, as Lee’s paintings are featured in some of the most beautiful homes citywide. The artist will unveil her latest works at an intimate event on Anderson Lane on January 15th at Massage Harmony. VETTAHOMES.COM 59

HOUSE ON THE CORNER by jennifer swanson

66 VETTAHOMES.COM

Constructed in less than two years from scratch, the House On The Corner displays LaRue Architects’ ability to quickly create large yet non-overpowering modern homes on challenging inclines. Built on a slope-y leftover lot located in a 1980’s subdivision, the goal of this project was to develop a clean-cut house with a really nice outdoor space for a family. The end result is modern, sophisticated and fun. For this project, the client, “wanted mostly one story and an open plan for a family home,” said LaRue. The focus was on constructing the house inwards to the pool and the outside areas instead of positioning it in such a way that the client would be seeing cars drive by on somewhat of a well-traveled street. Along with their three kids, the “clients love to spend time outside — especially by the pool — so integrating that relationship into the house was important.” This beautiful, substantial yet simple development is made out of smooth-cut limestone, stucco, wood, steel and siding. It mixes interior and exterior spaces to create inspiring views. In the back, you will find a yard area perfect for barbequing and swimming. Stairs stream across the property and structured landscaping adds to the appeal. VETTAHOMES.COM 67

68 VETTAHOMES.COM

THE HOUSE ITSELF WAS CUT INTO THE GROUND TO AVOID SLOPING. IN THE PROCESS, THERE WAS EXTRA SPACE BELOW THE MAIN LEVEL. YOU CAN SEE WHERE, “THE SITE FALLS OFF AND THE HOUSE BEGINS TO COME OUT OF THE GROUND,” NOTED LARUE.

VETTAHOMES.COM 69

From the front of this “L” shaped home, you see stairs leading up to the main entrance adorned with hanging plants. “The interior of the ‘L’ wraps the pool,” said LaRue. “Large sliding glass doors open up to the pool, and screens were added to enclose the porch making the flow from interior to exterior quite seamless.” The stunning sapphire-blue swimming pool with two negative sides commands attention on this property. When you walk into the house through the front door, “you are looking directly at the pool,” noted Matt Shoberg of Shoberg Homes — the builder and first homeowner of the House On The Corner. Shoberg’s “favorite aspect of this house, by far, was the pool and that it’s tucked right up next to the house.” Although not the current resident, he and his family used the amenity daily. “Sometimes a pool that is separated from the house is more of a destination that you have to pack up your stuff and head over to,” said Shoberg. In contrast, the accessibility of this pool adjacent to the house was a more convenient design that allowed for a better living experience. 70 VETTAHOMES.COM

72 VETTAHOMES.COM

DECORATED IN THE HIGHEST TASTE, THE INTERIOR IS JUST AS GORGEOUS AS THE EXTERIOR… Although Shoberg Homes was the builder and worked hand in hand with LaRue Architects on this home, LaRue was solely responsible for the design. “The style of the home was all LaRue’s style,” credits Shoberg. “We built what we wanted for ourselves with all of the requirements, but LaRue Architects designed the project.” The two firms have worked together on a total of six projects, and five of those were custom homes. One of LaRue Architects’ greater strengths seems to lie in taming the land. The firm was able to take a difficult lot that had been overlooked for a long time as it was not an easy one to build on and turn it into a beautiful dwelling. “We pay a lot of attention to detail,” said LaRue. Besides saving space, the firm also addresses green issues in residential construction while adding to the living experience by implementing overhangs, utilizing surrounding trees, implementing large windows and geothermal air conditioning. A well thought out design, the “L” shaped House On The Corner demonstrates LaRue Architect’s ability to produce enjoyable living spaces that are creative and practical at the same time. VH

Entrance to the amazing “Tree House” project by MF Architecture, Austin.

The Tree House gets its name from the property’s primary live oak tree, which served as the focal point for this development. Each space has a special relationship to this central element, creating a unique connection between the indoor and outdoor realms. With finely detailed materials and finishes, this twostory home by Matt Fajkus Architecture is the perfect balance of “sophistication and restraint.”

Back porch, built around the oak that was already in the lot.

Around the backside on the ground level, two singlestory wings wrap around the main live oak. A tall, twostory “window wall maximizes the use of inexpensive windows to frame various views of the tree while creating a rich elevation and allowing for daylight to harvest in the entry zone. The upper portion of the wall is tapered back to allow the tree canopy room to extend and grow.

Walking through, clearly structured zones of public and private function provide an organized flow. There is more than one type of opening in every space to allow for various connections to nature. The design welcomes plenty of direct and indirect natural lighting with windows that act as playful apertures. These thoughtfully placed works of art activate the courtyard space at night and showcase the preserved live oak.

Continuing the indoor and outdoor connective theme, the master suite is as much about its opening to the small yard as it is about the enclosed space it captures. There is a tongue-and-groove wood ceiling. This accent continues to the exterior soffit, blurring the lines between inside and outside.

The courtyard provides a perfect spot for entertaining. Spanning around the tree terraces down to the yard, it acts as a natural amphitheater for gatherings and performances within the wings of the house. The deck becomes a stage, and the surrounding grassy area an excellent space for spectating and mingling.

It’s a home to be shared. From the inside out, Tree House is a uniquely balanced setting that juts and pulls back in all of the right places. Matt Fajkus Architecture’s design fosters comfort, the creative use of natural lighting and blends natural and man-made elements to create an aesthetically pleasing, functional dwelling.

UPWARD GREEN

A Closer Look at Vertical Gardens by coral talavera

REMINISCENT OF A ‘MODERN DAY BABYLON’, VERTICAL GARDENS WILL MAKE ANY MINIMALIST SWOON. REFUSING THE NOTION OF TRADITIONAL POTS AND SOIL, THESE GREEN ARTSCAPES PROVIDE SLEEK SIMPLICITY AND AN INNATE PERSPECTIVE OF (GRAVITY) DEFIANCE. THE TREND IS THE RESULT OF ARDUOUS DESIGN AND RESEARCH, AND THE MAIN FOCUS IS TO MAXIMIZE SPACE AND INTEGRATE NATURE INTO EVEN THE MOST UNASSUMING SPACES.

MEET THE NEW URBAN GREEN As the trend has been slowly creeping into mainstream US, you’ll find some pretty good local projects with upward greenery (such as that mossy wall at Whole Foods Downtown that I absolutely love). However, vertical gardens haven’t quite burst onto the design scene as they have in Europe and Asia. The trend has been growing stronger overseas for the last decade and it’s been broadly featured in international residential and commercial projects. From tiny city apartments, to massive commercial complexes, vertical gardens have proven to enhance the look and composition of the space, while also bringing in a refreshing sensation of nature indoors. From rustic spaces to more modern settings, vertical gardens add to any living space by infusing life and freshness through lush greenery. This refreshing modality of living art has become the focal point in numerous new buildings and apartments, and a staple in natural integration in European cities. Our featured project is an apartment designed by SVOYA Studio in Ukraine, a firm that is well known for their signature merging of urban nature. The modern look of this living space is beautifully enhanced by floor-to-ceiling greenery. Bright ferns and rich woods are gorgeously complemented by the glass and smooth finishes throughout, as well as the impressive views of the River Dnipro through the apartent’s many windows. According to the designers, the most complex and interesting process was developing a panel system panels with a complete cycle of self-service. Wood, concrete panels and metal framing were used to achieve the look. Back in the US, international design exponents and lifestyle advocates are bringing some incredible projects to high-visibility venues and, thus, spreading the green fever. Designers such as Patrick Blanc, who wrote the book on Vertical Gardens, has visited cities like New York, Phoenix and Miami to bring his captivating work.

THE MAN BEHIND THE GREEN WALLS

The Patrick Blanc Revolution Patrick Blanc, a renowned French botanist, is in big part responsible for the vertical garden revolution. Born in Paris in ’53, he has thoroughly explored the trend, working for the French National Centre for Scientific Research. Although Blanc did not invent the vertical garden, he is a distinguished ‘green engineer’, responsible for modernizing and popularizing the trend. His work is recognized globally; some of my favorite works by Blanc include the MoMA wall in New York and the Rolex boutique in Milan.

“DUE TO MAINTAINING THE APPEARANCE OF A LIVING, BREATHING BUILDING, ENCASED WITH PLANTS ALL ALONG THE WALLS, VERTICAL GARDENS COULD BE ONE OF THE BIGGEST COST-EFFECTIVE WAYS TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT. ON TOP OF THIS, THE GENERAL PUBLIC CAN ALSO BENEFIT FROM THE CREATIONS - CREATING A MORE POSITIVE MENTALITY.”

Exterior views of The Green House skyscraper in Singapore. Images from City Developments Limited.

RECORD-BREAKING HEIGHTS The Guiness world record for highest vertical garden installation was shattered last summer by The Green House, by City Developments Limited, a massive structure in Singapore towering at 7,500 sqft. The gargantuan building is far from an ordinary skyscraper, with an impressive eco-friendly wall of greenery that could save Singapore up to $778,000 in energy and water consumption. “With the eco-inspired Tree House, CDL has not only created a place where residents are proud to call home, but more importantly, a green icon which places Singapore on the world map.” said Mr Kwek Leng Joo, the deputy chairman of the project. MORE OF THIS GREAT TREND As Austin’s thriving city core continues to rapidly develop, and the love for square footage is overthrown by the thrill of desirably located real estate, smaller and more efficient condos and apartments are definitely in order. It behooves us to promote smarter and more innovative green elements in our living space and, as we stand on the threshold of huge urban transformation, I’d love to see more architects and builders bring the outside in. Pet safe (and somewhat kid-friendly), vertical gardens are not only perfectly aligned with an organic diet, but also offer the countless psychological benefits of indoor vegetation. My husband will regret me having written this article; a trip to The Home Depot is definitely in his near future… VH VETTAHOMES.COM 97

THINK INSIDE THE BOX

I

f you – like us – are obsessed with alternative homes and unique design, you’ve probably considered joining the shipping container home revolution. Although the trend has had its share of opposition from select builders, it’s proven to be a cool and cost-effective shelter solution across the globe. The fact is that, with the correct lot and most importantly, a highly skilled architect, the speed and price accessibility are unmatched in the residential construction market.

98 VETTAHOMES.COM

Other than residential projects, we’ve seen the trend applied to various uses and to further different causes around the world. In Zambia, a local NGO supplied Tokyo-based architect Mikiko Endo with old containers it had used to transport donations and she transformed them into maternity clinic housing. We’d love to see more of this in Central Texas, given that shipping container homes have proven to be strong, safe, and eco-friendly. Here’s some eye candy from around the world to inspire your shipping container journey…

CONTAINERS OF HOPE BY BENJAMIN GARCIA SAXE LOCATION San Jose, Costa Rica Architect Benjamin Garcia Saxe designed and orchestrated this inexpensive home for under $40,000 using two 40-foot shipping containers. Garcia Saxe created this 1,000 sq ft dwelling for a couple looking to build a rural home without incurring in debt. The cool metal haven is located 20 minutes outside the capital of Costa Rica. While the slanted roof lets the sunlight in, it also lets the hot air escape. Glass and sleek furnishing complete the look in this unique living space. (benjamingarciasaxe.com)

DECAMERON DESIGN SHOP BY STUDIO MK27 LOCATION São Paulo, Brazil Renowned Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan gave Decameron ultra bright and cheery walls, in perfect harmony with its colorful neighborhood in São Paulo. Kogan built the low-cost shopping facility using two rows of stacked containers and added translucent sliding doors as a storefront window. BARLATA A Taste of Spain T

ucked away on the street level of Post South Lamar’s apartment complex is a quaint, authentic tapas restaurant called Barlata. If you have never been to Barcelona or tasted traditional Spanish dishes before such as patatas bravas or paella, you are in luck. Designed by architect Michael Hsu as a playful, family-friendly restaurant, Barlata is the perfect spot to grab a copa, taste multiple small dishes or enjoy and share larger plates reminiscent of Spain. The design was the work of local architecture superstar, Michael Hsu Office of Architecture. The décor is mostly bright red with modern accents and characters depicted on the walls. These large custom murals which surround the bar were inspired by the chef’s favorite childhood comic. The artwork serves as a tribute to the popular Spanish comic strip Mortadelo y Filemón — a slapstick comic about an unlikely duo of secret agents involving childish antics and adult humor. THE ART OF THE SOFA

A

fter making her mark in the Houston design scene and representing amazing international artists out of her downtown gallery, local artist and designer Kathryn Goodnite has created a signature line of sofas and contemporary seating that is just as beautiful as her artwork. Her custom frames are made of poplar with eight-way hand tied construction, made to stand the test of time. “I build sturdy, highly durable sofas that will last forever. That’s why I focus on timeless design; because one will never outlive the other”, added the designer. Comfort is not sacrificed by strength, as the pieces can be down-wrapped or covered in memory foam, which will surely make your KG sectional your favorite spot to lounge.Meanwhile, for a fully customized experienced, the studio offers a wide array of fabrics (including linens, mohair and velvet) in fabulous designer colors and patterns. “To make sure we have something for everyone, designers can also bring any client’s favorite material to cover the piece.” While sofas are available to designers and the trade, private clients are welcome to stop by her downtown studio (by appointment), where they can custom order anything between a love seat to a massive sectional. estled in the highly celebrated Whit Hanks building, Lotus Gallery is an intimate and upscale time capsule, with a collection of exquisitely curated treasures from across the globe. Indonesia native Francisca Tung - one of the loveliest ladies I’ve met in Austin - runs this antiques shop full of amazing stories and infinite character. Lotus is not just an antique shop; it’s a true experience. Surrounded by superb decorative pieces and historic finds, one can easily feel inside a museum rather than a shop. I was impressed not only by the amount and variety of items found in the space, but also by the exclusive shopping experience provided for the big ticket items (which don’t even make it to the floor). The day I met Francisca and her lovely assistant Jonathan, crates had arrived with an incredibly rare item that would only be offered to their top-notch collector clients – some of whom frequently fly in from Hong Kong, New York and UK – just to come collect their treasures a block away from Whole Foods... Although you’ll find a taste of their interesting collection online (either on their website or 1st Dibs), their vision can only be lived to the fullest by making the trip downtown and indulging in the collection of authentic pieces. Lotus not only pays tribute to history and rarity; it’s also a chance to take a whimsical, harder look into one’s worldly soul. INTERIORS BY SCHEER & CO by lauren austin

A

rising tastemaker in the world of interior design, Killy Scheer creates elegant, fresh spaces that also elicit a sense of playfulness. She brings broad-based design literacy to her work, having formally trained at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and in the New York studios of design masters Jonathan Adler and Fawn Galli. Killy now makes her home in Austin where she founded the high-end interiors firm: Scheer & Co. VETTA recently had the opportunity to talk with the local artist about lifestyle design, materials and the importance of feeling comfortable in our homes. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT MOST AS A DESIGNER? Aside from making spaces beautiful and longlasting enough to withstand trends, the most important elements I can bring to a project are familiarity and timelessness. At the end of the day, my clients need to feel comfortable in their homes. While I like to elevate the level of sophistication and polish, I don’t think real homes should feel precious or delicate. I design them to suit to how my clients realistically live in them, but without compromising the overall aesthetic. If they have kids and dogs 108 VETTAHOMES.COM

and don’t like to spend hours each day fluffing and sprucing, I make sure we select materials and furnishings that work for their lifestyles. Sometimes that means buying bulletproof pieces, and sometimes it means buying things that look as good rumpled as they do primped. My work is highly client-driven, which means I’m not stamping out the same style over and over. Each project is completely unique. For me, this keeps things interesting and fresh, but it also gives my clients a showpiece home and one that reflects them fully where they can feel completely at ease. I also feel that infusing a sense of history or place is important. I employ unexpected combinations (metal mixing, style mixing, pattern mixing) and a collected aesthetic in all of my design projects. The key is making sure there isn’t too much of one thing, so a look doesn’t come off as theme-y. FROM WHERE DO YOU DRAW DESIGN INSPIRATION? I am influenced by so much: other designers, past and present, architecture, art, dance, music and history (I have visited more house museums than I care to admit). I grew up in New York City surrounded by highly detailed, historic architecture. As a result, I try to infuse a sense of history into all of my projects with antique or vintage finds sprinkled among new pieces.

“LUXURY ISN’T ABOUT BEING PAMPERED IN A SPA OR HAVING A CLOSET FULL OF EXPENSIVE SHOES AND FLASHY HANDBAGS, BUT RATHER EFFORTLESS COMFORT AND EASE.”

Contemporary design, against NYC’s beautiful skyline.

MUCH IS BEING SAID ABOUT THE FUTURE OF DESIGN. DO YOU THINK THE PAST ACTUALLY INFORMS THE NEXT BIG THING? The past absolutely informs the future. I don’t think a single tastemaker has discarded the past as a starting point, at the very least. But the past shouldn’t hold us back. HOW ARE BROADER TECHNOLOGY INNOVATIONS AFFECTING YOUR WORK? While I prefer to specify natural fibers (wool, linen, cotton, etc.), where possible, the innovations that have affected my work lately are the variety of vastly improved synthetic fabrics – specifically solution-dyed acrylic for use outdoors. Previously, these textiles were stiff and scratchy, but now so many of them have such a nice hand that I often use them indoors for clients who want truly worry-free upholstery. Janus et Cie, Perennials and Sunbrella have introduced textiles that are dead ringers for beautiful, slubby linens, mohair and velvet. It’s uncanny.

WHAT TRENDS SHOULD WE EXPECT TO SEE IN 2015 AROUND MATERIALS AND FINISHES? So many sustainable and green products have tended to look extremely rustic, homemade and/or recycled, which doesn’t work in all applications. But I’m seeing more and more introductions with a polished, sophisticated look and feel we will see more products that are inherently earth-friendly and renewable that will blend seamlessly with new high-end pieces and antiques. HOW DO YOU DEFINE LUXURY? Luxury isn’t about being pampered in a spa or having a closet full of expensive shoes and flashy handbags (although those are nice), but rather effortless comfort and ease. It’s how we feel in our personal environments and in our own skin, or in how we fill our time. For me, luxury comes in the form of a clean, clutter-free, sun-drenched house, curated surroundings that allow an escape from everyday stresses and routines, full of delightful and subtle details. MCKINNEY YORK ARCHITECTS

CELEBRATING 31 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE by jennifer swanson

W

hat can good design do for a city? The architects at McKinney York serve as a perfect example of an entity that has worked diligently to make Austin both a more beautiful and pleasant place to live, as well as an attractive destination point for visitors. This firm’s award winning internship and mentor program and its multiple design awards are some of the reasons why this firm is making waves locally, and the nation is taking notice. When the decision makers behind the prestigious advertising firm, McGarrah Jessee, were looking to transform their space and create the “unexpected,” they chose McKinney York Architects. Theirs was the perfect challenge for the McKinney York firm, because meeting such demanding design needs is the forte of architects Heather McKinney, FAIA, LEED AP (Founding Partner), Al York, AIA, LEED AP, and Michelle Rossomando, AIA, LEED AP. The firm’s strength lies not in producing any specific style of architecture, or in strictly generating residential versus corporate developments, but rests in fulfilling the varied needs of its clients in a beautiful, responsible and collaborative way.

Portrait of the McKinney York team.

Although the McGarrah Jessee agency is physically located in a mid-century modern structure—the perfect Mad Men setting for any ad firm—there were important design details that required particular attention. According to Al, “the former State Comptroller building had the feel of a Soviet-looking, scary place.” He elaborates, and the building sounds cold and uninviting by his description. “They did everything you could do to push people away. They took away the soul of the building,” he says of the previous occupants. “This project was a matter of undoing the things that killed the building,” he says. The McKinney York team began by letting light into the previously blacked-out windows and adding a pop of red color near the entrance. In addition, the architects developed a “skin and bones” concept for constructing an atmosphere that could foster creativity. “We pulled back everything to the raw concrete so you could see what the building had to offer,” says Heather.

Having transformed the location into a more vibrant and welcoming one from the inside and out, McKinney York won six awards for their finished McGarrah Jessee project. One of the most exciting was the Architect Magazine’s Annual Design Award Review in 2012, which recognized McGarrah Jessee as one of three best work environments in the country. What’s more is that through creating a better work atmosphere for the agency in downtown Austin, the architect firm subsequently created a better urban vibe for passing pedestrians. “Cities are about people,” says Al. “They’re not about buildings. Good design in an urban setting is about making a place for people to get together. It may be getting together for work, for business, for play or for socializing,” he adds. “Or it may be about going apart on your own and being able to go off down to the trail. It’s about making a place for people. It can be as simple as providing shade on a sidewalk so you can be outside during the warm parts of the year.” Heather adds her insights to this urban issue. “Second Street is now a really great walking street because they have these really wonderful sidewalks where there’s a lot of café seating, a lot of retail. And even though it’s all kind of brand new, it feels really good. There are festivals that go on down there all the time. So, I think people go down there to people watch. They’ll walk that street just to people watch. That didn’t exist before.” She reflects, “A long time ago, some architects from Philadelphia came down to do this design plan for Austin—Denise Scott Brown and Robert Venturi, who are some pretty famous architects from my generation. Denise Brown said, ‘You guys need to have a rambla, an area where people can amble around after dinner, 116 VETTAHOMES.COM

people watch and digest their food.’” She points out, “That was in the mid-1980’s. It took Austin until the mid-2000’s to actually accomplish that, but we did and it works. It was a great idea that finally came to fruition. So, I would say that good design will change the way that we use the city, and it will make it good for the people in the city as well as people visiting the city. The more appealing we are as a destination for visitors, the better off we’re all going to be.” Highly regarded for sustainable design, there is no doubt that the McKinney York architects are doing their part and more to contribute good design to this city. In 2012, the firm became the first local architecture group to be recognized as a Platinumlevel Austin Green Business Leader. This year, McKinney York received the 2014 Firm Achievement Award from the Texas Society of Architects, the highest honor the Society can confer upon a Texas-based architecture firm for its sustained design excellence. This is particularly notable as only one firm in the state receives this honor each year based on how it has distinguished itself professionally in terms of its service to the community. It is not for one or two outstanding works that McKinney York was chosen, but rather for its entire body of work which consists of commercial, residential, cultural and civic projects. The firm has won numerous design awards and has worked effectively with many public entities, including the City of Austin. Adding value to the city, the Anderson Village affordable housing project in East Austin and award-winning bus stops around town are just a few examples of the good community works McKinney York has produced. “Our firm focuses on livability, providing humane and well-designed environments that foster community and a sense of worth at every scale,” says Michelle.

“CITIES ARE ABOUT PEOPLE. THEY’RE NOT ABOUT BUILDINGS. GOOD DESIGN IN AN URBAN SETTING IS ABOUT MAKING A PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO GET TOGETHER.”

VETTAHOMES.COM 117

It’s not just sustainable design, however, that makes this firm unique. It’s also the way in which its architects combine their diverse capabilities and implement their professional approach to meeting the critical design needs and desires of their clients that makes them special. Michelle notes, “We’re good listeners. We probably listen and talk to our clients more than others do. I think we spend a lot of time talking about the project making sure they understand what’s on the drawings and making sure that we understand what they’re asking for so that when the building is finally done and realized, we’re both seeing the same thing.”

Bus stops designed by McKinney York, as part of their urban development portfolio.

118 VETTAHOMES.COM

With a resume of diverse projects and numerous accolades to credit, McKinney York is celebrating its thirty-first year in business. “It’s an accomplishment,” says Heather. “Architecture firms tend to be fragile creatures. It’s not that common that you find them surviving this long. We feel like we get better each year. We feel like the body of work that we have is more significant every year. I would certainly say that the last ten years have been a lot more powerful than the previous twenty, so that makes me feel like our future is pretty bright.” All of this bodes well for the architectural landscape of Austin. ESCALA HOUSE Project: Escala Drive Project Principal: James LaRue Project Manager: Kyle McCollum House Completed: June 2014 Square Footage: 7,956 SF Heated, 13,385 SF Covered

120 VETTAHOMES.COM

SLEEK LINES AND MODERN RUSTIC, PERFECTLY PAIRED WITH ITS NATURAL SURROUNDING.

The Escala House is a perfect example of how a minimalistic style can be achieved through merging construction with nature. Built on a slope, LaRue Architects developed the Escala House utilizing its natural surroundings and landscaping to create a large home with a simplistic appearance. The result is so effective you would never guess at first glance that this beautiful home has an abundance of garage space that is large enough to comfortably fit seven cars.

VETTAHOMES.COM 121

THIS DESIGN TEAM PAID AS MUCH ATTENTION TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE PROJECT AS THEY DID TO THE INTERIORS. THE RESULT IS A BALANCED NATURAL HAVEN. Principal Architect Jim LaRue (who works on every LaRue project) noted that the concept behind this particular residence was, “to have the house unfold as you walk the property.” The design goes deep into the street with layers of wall that are lower on the outer edges of the lot and build up height as you near the center of the area. This design helped create, “a low and sleek house that unfolds naturally from the landscape. A garden shed creates a small and charming entry building, while the car garages are buried into the hillside and hide themselves from view. The entry experience is based around a ‘walk-through-the-garden’ concept as you arrive at the steel and glass entry that captures the hill country views beyond,” said LaRue. LaRue Architects were able to construct an unassumingly larger entity by cutting into the hill to make the extra room for garage space while overcoming the biggest challenge of the project: to hide the homeowner’s cars and keep their property looking minimalistic and clutter-less.

122 VETTAHOMES.COM

VETTAHOMES.COM 123

The back of the home is just as clean cut and gorgeous as the front, offering a resort feel complete with an outdoor shower, pool and garden. “We wanted to create an oasis, or ‘mirror of a pool,’” said LaRue. “The limestone lueders around the patio and spa express the sculptural nature of the concept. The entire pool has a very dark interior ‘pebble sheen’ finish with a perimeter stainless steel trough so the water drains around the edges to create a ‘mirror’ effect.” It does exactly that, featuring over-running water on three of the four pool ledges.

124 VETTAHOMES.COM

“A LARGE PART OF THE CONCEPT BEHIND THE HOME INVOLVES CREATING A STUNNING AND UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE FOR A VISITOR BEFORE THEY EVEN ARRIVE AT THE HOUSE.”

VETTAHOMES.COM 125

126 VETTAHOMES.COM

“GLASSY AND SOPHISTICATED, BUT WARM AND LIVABLE. THE HOUSE IS MEANT TO LIVE AND GROW DICTATED BY THE SITE.”

There is an artistically minimalist touch to both the yard and home. The large floor-to-ceiling windows that form more of a “window wall” in some areas offer an excellent source of natural lighting. Because these are made of steel rather than wood, they are less bulky and save space. The window-walls also feature a few hinged panels that can be opened for fresh air access. Simple design touches like this add to an overall greater living experience for the homeowner. What exactly does the overall experience feel like inside this house? “Glassy and sophisticated, but warm and livable,” said LaRue. “The house is meant to live and grow dictated by the site. An entry building serves as the owner’s garden shed and relaxing retreat, all while overlooking a large vegetable garden. Anyone visiting the house circulates past the gardens and along a beautiful sculptural stone wall that lands them at the entry. A large part of the concept behind the home involves creating a stunning and unforgettable experience for a visitor before they even arrive at the house.”

VETTAHOMES.COM 127

128 VETTAHOMES.COM

COLOR, TEXTURES AND SLEEK SHAPES DEFINE THE EXTERIOR FOR A DESERT OASIS LOOK AND FEEL. Operating since 1989, LaRue Architects’ strong point is creating real, pure, one-of-a-kind custom homes. The residential works by this seven-man team are like pieces of art, and they only take on ten to twelve projects per year. The firm is great with utilizing natural settings and design elements to create green, effective spaces. For example, LaRue takes advantage of any surrounding trees, places glass windows in a direction that will keep homes cooler, help them have a better chance of catching a breeze or get the best natural lighting, incorporates overhangs to keep water and sun off the home, utilizes LED lights, geothermal air conditioning and takes additional steps to protect the house against harsh elements. Such attention to detail is important as it helps create a greener, more costeffective home in the long run. LaRue Architects believe that the greater the challenge, the greater the opportunity for an imaginative, ingenious and ethical architectural response. With over 400 residences completed, LaRue Architects brings extensive experience and expertise to every project. VH

RETHINK HOWYOU USE

Olive Oil

THE EXPERTS AT WE OLIVE AUSTIN SHARE SOME INSIDER TIPS WITH VETTA ON HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF THIS AMAZING INGREDIENT.

O

Outside shot of We Olive’s fabulous Galleria location. Opposite page: Garlic and herbs olive oil infusion.

live oil has been touted as one of the healthiest fats we can consume. As the trend toward improving our health (especially in the US) continues to gain momentum, the numerous benefits of olive oil find themselves in the news regularly. And we believe some things are worth repeating for the people in the cities of Austin, Lakeway, Spicewood and Bee Caves.

Don’t skip cooking with extra virgin olive oil because of its smoke point. Much has been made in the media of the dangers of frying with olive oil because it has a low smoke point. If an oil gets to its smoke point it can create harmful compounds, but you needn’t worry as much as the media would have you believe. EVOO has a smoke point of 410 degrees F, so there really is never a concern about reaching that smoke point if you are sauteing or frying on the stovetop.

Though olive oil is a versatile oil for cooking – as the experts at We Olive (located in the Hill Country Galleria) will tell you – it also has many other uses that we can take advantage of as long as it’s in our pantry. In addition to its numerous uses, it could be that they way we have been using it all along could be all wrong. While there is not right or wrong way to use olive oil, with its popularity also comes misinformation and the potential for confusion. Here are several ways you should rethink how you are using olive oil so that you get the most benefits without any hassle.

Don’t keep your olive oil next to the stove. Olive oil can go rancid very quickly if you leave it exposed to constant heat and light. Be sure to store your oil in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry, to ensure it has the longest shelf-life possible. However, be sure not to throw out your olive oil at the first sign of bitterness. A slight bitter taste can actually be an indicator of the presence of antioxidants, so don’t immediately jump to thinking it’s gone bad.

THE RULES OF BUYING AND USING OLIVE OIL The “light” variation of olive oil isn’t with regard to its calorie count, but rather the color and flavor of the oil. If you are buying light olive oil, you will not be saving on calories, as olive oils contain roughly the same calories and nutrients across the board (120 calories, 14g of fat per tablespoon). Light olive oils are more highly refined to make it more neutral than other variations.

Refrain from stocking up on olive oil when it’s on sale. Again, olive oil can go rancid (as can any oil), so it’s important to only buy as much as you’ll use in a month at a time. If you stock up you run the risk of tossing out a bunch of unused oil or using rancid oil in your cooking. These tips can help you use olive oil more effectively than you may have in the past. With all of the health benefits available, olive oil should be a staple in your daily diet. The healthy fats can help support brain health and keep you lean, so there’s no reason you shouldn’t add it to your diet today. (weolive.com/austin) VH

OFFICIAL FERR ARI DEALER

Ferrari of Austin Sporty, elegant, versatile: that’s the Ferrari California. Since the 1950’s, in fact, this particular model has been the Prancing Horse’s finest embodiment of all three characteristics. Now, however, the new California T adds a radical innovation to that honourable tradition whilst still retaining the model’s highly renowned versatility. The T in its moniker refers, of course, to the development of a new 8-cylinder turbo engine that combines reduced emissions and fuel consumption with exeptional performance underscored by blistering pick-up due to zero turbo lag and a torque curve that adapts to suit each gear change. Equally, the retractable hard top transforms the California T from a chic coupé into a sleekly sophisticated spider in a mere 14 seconds. A refined semi-aniline leather-trimmed cabin also offers the modualr spaces of the signature 2+2 configuration and underscores the car’s extraordinary versatility. Ferrari of Austin invites you to discover the mystic of the Prancing Horse.
