LIMA: “The City of the Kings� Today is the capital of the country and the gateway to the rest of Peru. Lima was founded in 1535 by the Conquistador Francisco Pizarro.

Lima airport, called Jorge Chavez International Airport, is located in the Callao Region (approximately 30 minutes from Lima). There are currently 17 airlines operating international flights. Main Attractions: Plaza Mayor, Cathedral of Lima, Church and convent of San Francisco, Pachacamac, Caral, Pucllana Huaca, Callao. Average altitude: 154 masl


THE CARAL - SUPE CIVILIZATION The oldest city in the Americas, built 5, 000 years ago

Caral sits a short distance north from Lima: 3 hours by land. Its antiquity is similar only to the centers of civilization known in the Old World. For example, when the pyramid of Sakkara was being built in Egypt, the Caral pyramidal buildings were being occupied.


HUARAZ Ancash is the adventure sports region of Peru.

The Huascaran National Park, in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range, covers an area of 340,000 hectares that includes 296 lakes and 663 glaciers.

Distance from Lima to Huaraz: 400 km – 248 miles (8 hours by bus) and 50 minutes by flight.

Activities: Archaeological tourism in Chavin, Recuay and Willkawain (CallejĂłn de Huaylas), Sechin (Casma). Conventional camping and trekking, llama treks, mountain climbing, eco-tourism, river rafting.


TRUJILLO - CHICLAYO


TRUJILLO Capital of the eternal spring Trujillo is also called “the capital city of the marinera” because of its famous dance contest and skilled dancers. Its downtown is full of splendid examples of Colonial and Republican architecture. It lies in the Moche river valley where the Moche and Chimu civilizations developed between 200 B.C and A.D 700.

Distances by land: • Lima to Trujillo: 561 km – 348 miles (8 hours) • Chiclayo to Trujillo : 210 km – 130 miles (3 hours) By air: daily flights from Lima ( 50 minutes).

Principal attractions: Chan chan, Temple of the Sun and of the Moon, El Brujo. Average altitude: 34 masl


CHICLAYO Chiclayo is a city of important archaeological complexes. Here you can relive ancient legends of powerful lords who ruled kingdoms in these lands between the desert and the sea.

Distance by land: • Lima to Chiclayo: 775 km – 481 miles (11 hours) • Trujillo to Chiclayo (210 km – 130 miles (3 hours) By air: • Flights from Lima: 1 hour

Principal attractions: Sican, Tucume, The Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum, Chaparri forest, Pimentel.

These arid southern lands spill over with lively traditions, fascinating wilderness scenes and traces of fundamental cultures from Peru´s past, like Nasca and Paracas.

Distance by Land from Lima: • to Paracas/Pisco: 3 hours • to Ica: 4 hours • Nasca: 6 hours

Average altitude: • Pisco and Paracas, sea level. • Ica 406 masl, Nasca 588 masl

Principal activities: flights over the lines at Nasca and Palpa from Pisco, Ica and Nasca (30 minutes flights from Nasca), dune-buggy rides through the desert and boat rides to the Ballestas Islands from Paracas

AREQUIPA AND COLCA


AREQUIPA The white city and the majestic Misti Arequipa, Peru´s second-largest city, was listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2000. It is also known as “The White City”, because many of its churches and colonial mansions are built from the white ashlars volcanic stone.

Distance by land: • From Lima: 15 hours • From Nasca: 9 hours • From Puno: 4 hours • From Cusco: 8 hours

By air: from Lima (1 hour), from Cusco (50 minutes) and from Juliaca (30 minutes) Average altitude: 2,335 masl


COLCA CANYON The region of Arequipa features Peru´s deepest canyons, the Colca (3, 400 m) and Cotahuasi (3,535 m). The Colca Valley has become a paradise for adventure travelers since it is ideal for river running, trekking and mountain biking as well as other sports. The length of the valley is studded with 14 towns rich in tradition and which have preserved their religious festivities and folk art and music.

Distances: • From Arequipa to Chivay: 3 1/2 hours by land • From Puno to Chivay: 5 1/2 hours by land Activities: Condor watching, trekking, horseback, riding, river running, ecotourism, llama treks, wildlife watching.


PUNO AND THE LAKE TITICACA


PUNO AND THE LAKE TITICACA On a vast highland plain in the Puno region between Peru and Bolivia, Titicaca is the world's highest navigable lake, at 3,820 masl. The ancient Andean civilizations of the Quechua and Aymara, the two most important ethnic groups of ancient Peru, believed the lake was sacred and legend has it that the founders of the Inca Empire, Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, emerged from its waters.

By air: daily flights from Lima (90 minutes) and from Arequipa (30 minutes), landing at Juliaca airport. The overland trip to the city of Puno takes 50 minutes. By train: from Cusco (10 hours) Overland: from Cusco (6 hours), from Arequipa (5 hours) Tourist services and activities: Archaeology, experimential tourism on the islands, boat rides to see Taquile, Uros island and others communities.

Average altitude: City of Puno: 3,827 masl and Lake Titicaca: 3,810 masl


CUSCO


CUSCO The city of Cusco is located in the southeastern Andes. Its name in Qechua means “Center of the World�, from when it was the capital of the empire or Tahuantinsuyo. The Incan architectural legacy of Cusco dates back to the 15th century and is attributed to the Inca Pachacutec (1438-1471), who built the city's most remarkable constructions. The city is known as the Archaeological Capital of the Americas. UNESCO declared Cusco a World Heritage Site in 1983.

How to get there: By air: daily flights from Lima (1 hour), from Arequipa (40 minutes), from Puerto Maldonado (30 minutes) and La Paz, Bolivia (1 hour) By rail: From Puno: 10 hours Activities: Visit to archaeological sites (Machu Picchu), museums and churches, arts and crafts markets, experimential tourism, ecotourism, trekking, cycling excursions, river-rafting, mountain climbing, bungee jumping and horse-riding. Others features are the Gastronomy, variety of popular fiestas and the traditional markets of Chinchero and Pisac.

Overland: from Lima via Nasca and Abancay in 21 hours (1,131 km), from the city of Puno: 6 hours (389 km) and from Arequipa: 10 hours (528 km), in 10 hours via Juliaca. Average altitude: Cusco: 3,360 masl and the Sacred valley: 2, 900 masl

MANU & TAMBOPATA


MANU & TAMBOPATA Exuberant is the word that describes Madre de Dios with its infinite forests, sinuous rivers that rush towards the ocean, and life abounding in all its corners. Puerto Maldonado, the capital city, is an obligatory stop along the way to gain entrance to the national parks and reserves located in the area, and it has been, at certain moments, an important exporting site for rubber, wood, gold, and petroleum. The Manu National Park (1,716,295 hectares), located in the departments of Cusco and Madre de Dios, protects more than 800 bird species, 200 species of mammals, gigantic trees, as well as being home to indigenous communities. This is the park that set the world record for the number of bird species seen in one day at one spot with 324 species. The Tambopata-Candamo National Park (274,690 hectares) is known to possess the greatest diversity of mammal, tree, insect, and bird species in the world as well as the world record for the amount of butterfly species.
