On the Cover New Robotics Class at Rosary Prepares Students for STEM Careers Advances in technology bring many improvements to our lives, and the increasing rate of advancement means more jobs for people in STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics—careers. While Rosary’s math and science programs provide a strong foundation for students interested in STEM careers, the addition of a Robotics class in the 2013-14 school year offers hands-on engineering experience. To prepare for the Robotics class, a one-semester elective course, teacher Ms. Falguni Soni studied online through the Robotics Academy of Carnegie Mellon University. “I wanted to offer a Robotics course to teach the students handson problem-solving skills and 21st Century job skills,” Ms. Soni said. “My goal is to get more girls into STEM careers. So far, two of my Robotics students are going into engineering.” Robotics students built a robotic vehicle programmed to have moving parts and act upon other objects. A group project involved creating arms and legs that performed different functions. The students also built a puppy that could perform various tasks, and elephants that could dance, pick up items with their trunks, and trumpet. (See a video of the elephants on our YouTube channel.) “With each project, first the students learn how to build it, then how to make it move, then how to make it smarter, that is, have it make decisions,” Ms. Soni said. “They have to create the whole system, make it multi task, make it do critical tasks together.” “We use motor sensors to operate the arms and legs, and using different sensors, the robot can speak, listen, watch for obstacles, sense light, see colors, and more,” she said. “Robotics is a combination of art and technology. Those good in art are often good in robotics,” she said. “Students see how basic math and science apply to real-world projects, but they can also use their creativity. And when students work on projects in teams, they learn collaboration skills that apply to real-world workplaces.”

“I would encourage people to take Robotics. Ms. Soni is very supportive and wants you to excel,” Ryane said. “When I graduate I am definitely going to be working in art, but now I am looking more at engineering as well. There is a high demand for women engineers,” she said. Adding to our STEM initiative, Rosary is offering a computer science and programming course in the 2014-15 school year that will be taught by Mr. Shreyas Bhat.

Rosary Offers Summer Camps Rosary will be offering three NEW summer camps in writing, science and drama/music. The academic camps, for girls entering grades 6, 7 and 8, are “Writing Camp: Make Summer More than Just a Story,” “CSI Rosary: Forensic Science Camp,” and “Curtain Up! Theatre and Choral Arts Camp.” Online registration for these programs can be found at http://rosaryhs.com/camps. For information on athletics camps, see page 9.

“It was fun to be in the first Robotics class,” senior Ryane Jenig said. “Robots are fascinating to me. Everything was new. Ms. Soni was so excited which got us excited.” “I was surprised at how easy the programming process was,” she continued. “We were literally working with Legos.” (The class uses Lego Mindstorm® products.) “You do need to know math and the fundamentals, but the class was also the creative outlet Ms. Soni said it would be,” Ryane said. “Making inanimate objects behave like living things… it’s actually a form of expression. As we built the robots, we were following directions but we could add on additional parts and additional sensors. You could make the robot do so many different things. The only way you could get it wrong is for the robot not to do anything.”

Dining With Dad The Freshman Class hosted a night of dining, dances, games and prizes for Rosary girls and their fathers February 8 at the Lincoln Inn in Batavia.

2013 Yearbook Staff Awarded

Rosary High School senior Anna Ward has been named a finalist in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Anna is the daughter of Becky and Edward Ward of Batavia. More than 1.5 million high school students in more than 22,000 high schools nationwide entered the 2013-14 National Merit Scholarship Program in their junior year by taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Anna is among the one percent of those students—15,000—to become finalists, eligible for about $35 million in scholarships. Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be awarded: (1) $2500 National Merit scholarships awarded by state, (2) Corporate-sponsored scholarships, and (3) College-sponsored scholarships. Announcements of which students have received which scholarships are expected to conclude by July. To become a finalist, the students and their high school submitted a detailed scholarship application, providing information about their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. Begun in 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Program is a non-profit, academic competition to recognize academic achievement.

Rosary’s 2013 yearbook, Timeless, received first place from the American Scholastic Press Association at Columbia University in New York. Our book was selected from more than 9000 high schools and colleges throughout the country. We are one of seven schools selected for this honor in our division, and the only one from Illinois. Judging is based on overall theme and theme development, layout design, writing, and photography. Congratulations to all the staff and particularly to last year’s editors, (from left) Mollie Dempsey, Abby Urbik and Lexi Lovetere, all members of the class of 2013. The faculty moderator is Ms. Faith Etheredge.

Student Spotlight Laughead Earns Civic Award Sophomore Emily Laughead was one of 10 area students to receive the Ted Brattin Civic Youth Award in December. The award is given in the memory of Ted Brattin, an Aurora businessman who was involved in founding the Aurora Navy League Council and the Aurora-Naperville Rotary Club.

Essays written by Rosary freshmen Erin Hawkins (right) and Anna Stephens (left) were selected in an essay contest on “The Importance of Religious Freedom” sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. The winning essays move on to the next level in the ultimately international contest.

Abigail Chiesa, president, Rotary Club of Aurora, Emily Laughead, and Col. Richard Todas, president, NLUS Aurora Council.

Emily started her own organization, Emily’s Hope (www.emilyshope.org) to raise awareness and funds for Type 1 Diabetes. She participates in parades and local summer festivals, and organized a free family picnic for Type 1 Diabetics and their families. Last year, Emily raised $4991 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She has raised more than $55,000 since 2003. Emily also volunteers for other community service projects, including Feed My Starving Children and Hesed House. Last fall, Emily collected $500 by going door-to-door in her neighborhood to purchase items from the immediate needs and Christmas wish list from Hesed House and delivered the items in December of 2012. Nominated by Craig Wonsowski of North Aurora, Emily is the daughter of James and Amy Laughead of North Aurora.

Two Receive Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Emily Laughead (see above) and freshman Piper Winkler have been recognized by the 2014 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. Emily was named a Distinguished Finalist and Piper was awarded a Certificate of Excellence. The Spirit of Community Awards honor youth nationwide for outstanding volunteer service. Piper and a friend started the Good Night Sleep Tight program last August which provided 77 bundles—each including pajamas, books, and either a stuffed animal or a blanket and socks depending on the age of the child—to be distributed to children in need via the Humanitarian Service Project in Carol Stream. Additional bundles were given to Hesed House in Aurora. Piper also volunteers at the Geneva Public Library and as a docent at Pioneer Sholes School historical site in St. Charles. Piper and her family also prepare lunches for Lazarus House in St. Charles once a month.

Sister Ann Brummel and Piper Winkler

Rosary Students Selected in Knights of Columbus Essay Competition

She is the daughter of Christopher and Michele Winkler of Geneva.

“This essay contest is one way to get young people involved in what is going on in society,” said Norb Rozanski of Knights Council #4849 at Holy Angels. The topic of Religious Freedom was chosen by the Knights because, “As Catholics, we are called to participate in the political life of our country. This can be difficult at times because our beliefs are often misunderstood and unpopular. Also, laws and regulations from our governments can be contrary to our beliefs and threaten to force us to violate our conscience,” according to the group’s website. Erin Hawkins is from DeKalb and Anna Stephens is from Bartlett. Also commended by the judges were essays written by Rosary students Piper Winkler (Geneva), Sarah McCarthy (South Elgin), and Julia Isaacs (Aurora). Read the essays online on Rosary’s website: http://rosaryhs.com/news.

Development Celebrating Life and Continuing a Legacy: Dorothy and Michael O’Brien Dorothy and Michael O’Brien raised six children: five of them girls who graduated from Rosary from 1970 to 1979. Not ones to display their religious beliefs through words or public displays of faith, they instead lived with quiet devotion to God, steady service to others, and a giving back to the Aurora and Sandwich communities that supported them. Their practice of Christianity embodied their “do unto others” philosophy. Michael, an executive at the Old Second National Bank, was born in and loved Aurora; he was a member of various service organizations, and often was the quiet donor who pitched in to help a family in need of support. Dorothy, a full time homemaker originally from Dubuque, Iowa, volunteered all her adult life, as a room mother at St. Rita School, as a polling place worker, as a decades long classroom assistant at Keeler School and at her church in Sandwich, watching babies into her 70s so their moms could go to work. Michael died in 2002 at age 72, and Dorothy died in 2013 at the age of 84. A Rosary scholarship in the name of Dorothy and Michael O’Brien was previously established, and in December 2013, Rosary received a planned gift of $73,000 from the estate of Dorothy O’Brien.

The O’Brien daughters are Mrs. Deborah O’Brien Housh (‘70) of Batavia, Mrs. Anne O’Brien Boehne (‘71) of Itasca, Mrs. Jane O’Brien Pigatti (‘72) of Aurora, Mrs. Julie O’Brien Brockway (‘76) of Gobles, Michigan, and Mrs. Laura O’Brien Foster (‘79) of Portland, Oregon. Granddaughter Mrs. Elizabeth Pigatti Cotter (‘86) of Sugar Grove is also a Rosary alumna. Rosary is grateful to the O’Brien family for entrusting their daughters to us for their education, for their wonderful example of faith in action, and for their financial contributions to future Rosary graduates. Please visit our new Planned Giving web pages at www.rosaryhs. com/plannedgiving for a comprehensive look at how you can celebrate life with a planned gift to Rosary.

Candlelight Ball 2014 Was a Fun, Successful Voyage On February 22nd, Rosary’s “Royal Cruise Line” left port for the 2014 Candlelight Ball which was held at the Marriott Hotel in Naperville. Our theme this year was “Cruising into the Future,” and we were hosted by Cruise Directors Paul and Linda Fritz. As soon as we stepped on board, we had our travel photos taken by Senior Shipmate and Photographer Rachael Bamrick. Raffles included an iPad Air, a Blackhawks jersey signed by nine players, and a Tiffany surprise. New this year was our “Best of Live” raffle which allowed the raffle winner to have first choice of the Live Auction items as the prize! Lucky winner Bernadette Young (grandmother of Dariana Slater ’15) quickly chose the Celebrity Cruise for Two! Midway through the live auction, we were interrupted by a “weather bulletin” for “another Polar Vortex” getting ready to hit Rosary High School! The weather bulletin was actually the introduction to this year’s Fund-a-Need: Window Replacement. The bulletin was cleverly followed by a video performed by our own Rosary girls to “Let It Go,” the Academy Award-winning song from the movie, Frozen. Thanks to these girls, we were able to jump-start our window replacement campaign with an incredible $30,000! Everyone raved about the food on this cruise ship, and the Lido Deck was packed as we danced the night away to the sounds of Chef Dan and the Appetizers. As always, the night went by way too fast. But thanks to all our wonderful guests, donors, and sponsors, by the end of our trip, we raised a total of $53,000 for Rosary!

Development The Dominican Sisters Scholarships: A Legacy of Faith, Wisdom and Strength At Rosary’s March Board of Directors meeting, Sr. Rose Marie Riley, OP and members of the Springfield Dominican Leadership Team were in attendance. A significant portion of the meeting was focused on a highly inspirational presentation of the Dominican Sisters General Chapter as well as the Dominican Mission. Sr. Rose Marie’s quiet strength is emblematic of the Dominican presence at Rosary. We often get caught up in day-to-day school operations either forgetting about, or taking for granted, the powerful force that the Dominican Sisters have always brought to us. We seek to empower Rosary girls to become strong, intelligent, faith-filled young women – a true reflection of the Dominican Sisters. As a part of our Rosary scholarship slate, we honor three formidable Dominican women who have played an important role in Rosary’s history: The Sr. Mary Joseph Scholarship was established by the Rosary Alumnae Association with affection for and appreciation of Sr. Mary Joseph, a most gracious lady and the first principal of Rosary High School. Her vision and dedication breathed life into Rosary

in 1962 and beyond. Sr. Mary Joseph’s gentle spirit and commitment to service has embodied the highest ideals of a Rosary Woman. The Sr. Gretchen Bergschneider Scholarship was established in honor of Sr. Gretchen, one of the first science teachers at Rosary. Her scientific knowledge and hidden sense of humor were a wonderful combination in the classroom. The Sr. Marilyn Brennan Scholarship was established in honor of Sr. Marilyn whose beautiful voice, amazing musical talent, and soft and quiet way inspired many young Rosary women to pursue musical curriculum in college and become involved in music after graduation. These scholarships – particularly those honoring Sr. Gretchen and Sr. Marilyn – are in need of new gifts to sustain them. We want to continue to touch the lives of Rosary girls through this wonderful legacy inspired by Dominican Sisters. Won’t you consider a gift to one of the Dominican Sisters Scholarships today?

Throughout history, passionate women have joined together to make life better in their communities. Today, we share our money, our energy, and our ideas to create “Giving Circles.” A giving circle is formed when individuals meet and pool their resources, deciding how their collective gift will have the most impact on a charitable group – in our case, Rosary High School.

Your employer may join you in support of Rosary through a matching gift program. Our website has a seamless link that provides the names of more than 16,000 companies that offer Matching Gift Programs.

We would like to begin a new giving tradition by establishing Rosary Giving Circles. Think of it as “intramurals” for giving! You build your giving circle or team however you’d like. Do you still get together with your fellow Rosary Beads? Then consider a giving circle that gives to the Swim Team. Have you kept in touch with your cast mates from Annie? Rosary Fine Arts would love a gift from your circle. Do you have a reunion this year? We would love to offer a new Rosary scholarship in honor of your class. The possibilities, and opportunities, are endless! You can include as many people in your circle as you’d like…you can tell us how we should use your gifts…you can name your circle whatever you’d like – make it clever, thoughtful or funny… and of course, you can give as much you’d like! If you have interest in starting a Giving Circle for Rosary, please contact Sherry See, Director of Advancement and Development, at (630) 896-0831 or at ssee@rosaryhs.com…and watch the Sisterhood come full circle!

Simply go to http//:rosaryhs.com/ donate, scroll down to the Matching Gifts section, and type in a company name. If that company offers a Matching Gifts program, follow the links for the proper paperwork. Thank you to the following donors who have increased their support of Rosary through the Matching Gifts Program: Cyndi (Mayer ’91) and Mark Sears (Alaska Airlines), Mary Callahan (BP Amoco), Mark Draper (Exelon Corporation), Michael Wangler (Gelber Foundation), Todd and Kelly Bavery (Hanover Insurance Group), Karen Hinchley Perillo (Morgan Stanley), William Mertka (Motorola Solutions), Rose Jassoy (New York Life), Timothy Michel (Wells Fargo), Maureen (Zilly ’98) Tracy (Varian Medical Systems).

Rosary Welcomed Back College Students in December We held an ice cream social December 19 for recent Rosary graduates from the classes of 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, and 2009. The girls visited the teachers in the classrooms, visited current students, and then continued the conversation in the cafeteria with an ice cream sundae bar. We were happy to see so many smiling faces, and even recruited graduates for the March alumnae dinner theatre show!

In March, Harris Connect began contacting alumnae via postal mail and email to verify information; by the end of April, they will begin contacting our alumnae by phone. We certainly hope all of our alumnae will participate in our directory project by updating and including their information in the directory, and know that there is no obligation to purchase a directory.
