Directors’ Notes From Mrs. Laura Biancalana: Welcome to Shrek the Musical! We are happy you are joining us on our journey to find the happy ending that all fairy tales promise. Our evening’s fairy tale couldn’t have been achieved without a great deal of help! So, we say thank you to all of the people who have helped us. Thank you to Ms. McMahon for her support of the arts and our show, to Vicki Danklefsen for all things publicity, and to the faculty and staff of Rosary High School for their encouragement of students and directors alike. Thank you to the parents of all cast, crew, and pit members; we know that your support makes it possible for your son/daughter to participate in the show! We are grateful to the many parents who worked on the show. I especially want to thank Becky Barr, Kevin Ellis, Jeff Gurbal, and Gretchen Scheel for collaborating, organizing, and designing so much of what you will see tonight. Words can’t fully express the gratitude we feel for their incredible work and their generous support of the Rosary and Marmion fine arts students. Each represents what is truly special about this community. We couldn’t have done it without them and their teams. It continues to be my privilege to work with Megan Drahos. Her talent, organization, and collaborative spirit make each production a stand out. I am grateful for every laugh shared and every problem solved and for the blessing of calling her my friend. The fairy tale you will see tonight is one that embraces our individuality, encourages self-acceptance, and celebrates friendship. And while our hero and happy ending may look different than the traditional stories, the message is clear. We all deserve respect and love. As these young men and women navigate the challenges of growing up in a digital world, one with filters, likes, and pressure to meet an arbitrary standard, Shrek and Fiona’s

story reminds us all that we can be heroes in our own lives and live in this big, bright beautiful world with confidence and joy. Oh, and it always helps to have a friend by your side!

Directors’ Notes From Ms. Megan Drahos: I have had the privilege of working with outstanding students and musicians in my ninth show at Rosary. I am constantly amazed by the talent, hard work, and dedication of the students and parents every musical season. Thank you to Amy McMahon for allowing us to perform this show and share its important messages of inner beauty, true friendship, and having pride in who you are. We are very grateful to be able to partner once again with our brother school Marmion Academy and to share this great story with a live audience as we continue to navigate these Covid times. Shrek The Musical brings a lighthearted spirit, important and heartwarming themes, and truly beautiful music. This show is a fun, silly, and delightful fairy tale about love and acceptance. Audiences young and old will leave with rousing refrains stuck in their head like “Freak Flag,” “Story of My Life,” and, of course, the classic Monkees’ tune “I’m a Believer.” Beyond that, however, they’ll leave with a powerful confidence and a message of selfacceptance that only a singing and dancing dragon can deliver. Special thanks to the cast and musicians for all of their wonderful efforts on this exciting score filled with just about every style of music from ballads to R&B. I love that these students bring great energy everyday and are always up for a challenge. I could not be more proud of their hard work, commitment and passion in just over two months of rehearsals. It’s always my great joy and honor to work with Laura Biancalana! Shrek was a huge undertaking, but I was up for the challenge with my talented colleague by my side. Laura always makes these

journeys more enjoyable and rewarding. Laura is a very gifted director who’s artistic vision and commitment is inspiring to all. I love the way she guided the students to bring out the humor of this show. Her creative blocking and choreography added the big, bright, and beautiful dimension Shrek comes to realize by the end of the show. I’m grateful to work with such a dedicated colleague and thoughtful friend. It takes a village to put on each show and I’m indebted to everyone who has lifted a hammer, made magic with paint and foam, sewed a costume, designed a prop, driven a student to rehearsal, or any of the other countless ways that the Rosary community has contributed to making Shrek a possibility for these students. The executive set-build dream team of Jeff Gurbal, Becky Barr (‘92), and Kevin Ellis have worked tirelessly to create spectacular sets! We can’t thank them and the rest of the fantastic set-build team enough for their hard work and creativity to bring this story to life! I’m also very grateful to Angela Kvitek (‘17), one of our talented music and art alums, for her beautiful painting. Special thanks also to Gretchen Scheel (‘93). Gretchen has masterfully and gracefully headed costumes and been our right hand woman for over four years! Gretchen has worked magic finding over one hundred amazing costumes for this show. She is a blessing to Rosary High School and one of the kindest people you will ever meet. We are so grateful to you and your wonderful costume team that added such a fun dimension to the show. Many thanks also to the Rosary High School faculty, staff, and administration for their strong support of the fine arts. I want to especially thank Vicki Danklefsen for her incredible efforts! Vicki’s outstanding marketing and artistic talents are showcased in the amazing poster design and in the beautiful playbill. We can’t thank Vicki enough for her faithful commitment to spreading the great news of Rosary far and wide. I’m blessed to work with such a gifted colleague and kind friend with a heart of gold. The story of Shrek reminds us of the importance of companionship: everybody needs friends and family to offer

comfort and support. Most of all, I would like to thank my parents, my sister, and my fiancé who love and support me through each and every production with its long hours. They are always there for me and I’m forever grateful. This is our story, in many ways we are just like the characters in Shrek. We hope you’ll always remember that “what makes us special makes us strong”!

Rosary High School has had a long tradition of developing young girls into polished women. Combined with parental influence and guidance, high school represents the last phase of development toward independence-both legal and practical as the young women leave for college or move from their parent’s home. Have you considered what happens if a medical crisis arises while your daughter is away? Who will make the critical health care decisions with the new found independence? The answer is in the use of a Health Care Power of Attorney. Consider that “going away” gift along with bed linens, towels, and a study lamp.
